Title: Do we need ebay like site to promote bitcoin
Post by: btvGainer on April 16, 2016, 10:26:33 PM
Ebay has played a great role in the success of PayPal in becoming leading payment processor.Do we need a similar ebay like site to popularize Bitcoin and make it leader in money transfer?

Ebay is great for getting second-hand stuff. We have an alternative to that already and it's decentralized and open source - OpenBazaar. However in my honest opinion Amazon is the better site for new stuff and a lot of my friends use it way more than Ebay. If Amazon adopts Bitcoin it would be a huge push for getting Bitcoin into the mainstream. If someone launches a Bitcoin alternative to Amazon with the scale and plethora of offered products it would be a dream come true.

Well, I'm pretty sure a couple of big time companies accept bitcoin as of right now for some services and goods... Overstock, Microsoft, etc.  ... even though when I say "etc.", I've actually ran out of examples.  But I'm pretty sure a quick google search of which sites accept bitcoin would be fairly easy.

I think the main point of this thread is *if* it were to go "mainstream" on Ebay specifically would it create enough publicity to make Bitcoin "mainstream".  The answer is "mehh... idk".

While a lot of people still use Ebay for a lot of things, and also for the fact that I don't personally use it for anything; it's hard for me to tell if Bitcoin being incorporated on there would do any good.  It seems to me though, that a lot of people are starting to outsource Ebay for goods they would get on there for Amazon Prime and stuff like that... also, I see people are starting to form small local groups you can hook up with people in your area to sell and trade stuff on Facebook, which would be for free... in which you could also use Craigslist, but that's another topic.

The fact that Ebay's rates are so stupid high is a reason to not use Ebay at all... if Ebay's founders had any sense, they would at least try to cut out some of the fees (especially if they are dealing in paypal) and use Bitcoin.  Whether this promotes Bitcoin or not is hard to tell... Seems to be more "ebay stores" selling to people directly than people selling to other people.  If some old grandma goes on Ebay to buy something for her grandson on there, she is going to look at that gold BTC symbol and she would have no idea what that is, nor care.  If someone does know what it stands for but don't have any, they probably won't take the time to go purchase some because they don't know how too...

Interesting to think of what the possibilities are if it does make it to Ebay though... lots of potential scenarios could come up.

There's been enough publicity. That's not going to solve the overriding problem which is - what advantages does Bitcoin have for buyers? Unless they discount the hell out of everything there are somewhere around none.

Great point... even though it's still pretty young in terms of publicity, I think the word of Bitcoin has already been released in the mainstream a couple of times.  The fact of whether it was "good" publicity or "bad" publicity in the eyes of the public through the mainstream media is not really relevant.  I think the fact of the matter is that Bitcoin has been heard by millions of people and they know what it is and does.

Now, what fact that the public probably haven't heard in the "mainstream media" is that the cost reduction in sending funds over the internet... It's stupid how low of a transaction fee Bitcoin possesses in relation to paypal or Western Union... That's the biggest thing that Bitcoin needs to promote for itself.  Whether Bitcoin can handle the transaction size if it does get serious "mainstream publicity" and transactions sky rocket is another argument, and I think Bitcoin devs need to start taking a serious look at that.

Why do they need extra discount to use bitcoin? Only when people actually use bitcoin, will they be able to learn the advantages that bitcoin has

Because that's the only possible reason to tempt most people into trying it and even then they probably won't bother with the current ball ache when it comes to obtaining BTC. Online commerce works sweetly enough as it is.

for those who never use bitcoin before they don't care what is bitcoin has,but if there extra discount if they purchase with bitcoin then they'll go with it, peoples are too lazy to move on from their comfortzone once they already make a purchase with paypal or something else and they feel statisfied i think they won't use another payment processor

At least not at the moment/current state.

Good point. yes ebay played a major rule for paypal. but only epay is not responsible for this. we should consider amazon as well because it is equal to ebay marketplace in usage..
yes bitcoin also need marketplace's support to get a good place for future, I think now we got a better marketplace for bitcoin and it is Openbazaar.org.

I agree to an extent. Not everybody but people who find it useful and oppose the service taxes by commercial giants like Ebay will continue to use it anyway. At the current state its difficult to assume anything, too early for that.OB is not even used at its full potential at the moment, certainly a place for all Crypto lovers to spend their coins.I have seen people offering other services such as writing, designing etc maybe it will turn out to be the largest market for crypto freelancers.

The problem is the initial hype generated on bitcoin sales at Overstock died down very quickly.

I don't think we have worthy substitutes for Ebay and Amazon at the moment. Overstock is too expensive and the item selection sucks and OpenBazaar has just launched and needs time to fine-tune its system to offer better user experience. I think we as Bitcoin customers should have preferential pricing on goods at online retailers accepting Bitcoin as a payment option and not getting overcharged for things that can be found cheaper on fiat-only retailers.

Well eBay is a centralized system, so we definitely do not need another centralized service.... the alternative should be a decentralized service like

OpenBazaar, but I think it will a lot of time, before that will happen. OpenBazaar is still too complex for the average user. It is also only "online" and

available to others, when the store is running. This concept is still relatively new... and people will need some time to adapt their thinking to this new

concept.  ???

Well I think we really need ebay like sites (including ebay itself), to make BTCitcoin their number 1 option, before we could see it get promoted and have any significant results. Local one's are good as well but the impact wouldn't be that much. The downside to those are, if they continue with PayPal as their other payment option, then the impact would be minimal since most might still use it and never try to go with other payments. Promoting BTCitcoin is something, but making people to actually use it, it's something else.

But do not expect anything from Ebay fa*s. They already got paypal and enjoying to drain peoples blood.

PayPal is a business, like any other business, the bodega on the corner. No one is forcing you to use it. Use CC, use BTC, use IOU notes.
Some find PP's services worth the price, others don't. But raging about PayPal "drain[ing] peoples blood"? That's just weird.

Oh, Bitcoin has its own eBay now. It's called OpenBazaar (https://openbazaar.org/). Enjoy.

Having an ebay like platform to sell products online would be great but it would be great as well if they can come up with a good consumer protection like Paypal. We all know that there's a lot of scammers out there taking advantage of Bitcoin not to be charged back for consumer protection and I think that's one reason why Bitcoin is not being embraced by a lot of merchants yet.

I think PayPal separated from Ebay and is now a single company as it was becoming harder to keep both businesses profitable running side by side. Having a Bitcoin Ebay alternative could boost the usage of Bitcoin among the online shoppers that's true. But I am not sure what kind of revenue such a Bitcoin business would generate.

I think the right way to promote bitcoin is word by mouth by others and keep promoting on social media sites if it reach to many numbers keep promoting bitcoin well it can possibly catch the eyes of the online stores and will be adopted as their mode of payments and if that happen will very surely it can gather more users globally and internationally.

eBay has partnered with PayPal and you will not break that bond easily. These payment processors offer centralized services not possible with Bitcoin. You cannot get your account locked with Bitcoin, when you use services that are not approved by the masters of the financial systems.

The users of these systems are so used to the way these sites operate, that it would be weird for them to move to something that gives them complete freedom. ^smile^

If bitcoin got advertised there but isn't used in their website, than it will be useless.

If bitcoin got more universally accepted, then more people will use btc. More people use bitcoin, then those trading websites will implement BTC to their website.

Why in the first place we will like to break the bond between Paypal and Bitcoin. Ebay will just have to considered to add bitcoin to their list of payment methods and that will be a great way to promote bitcoin.

And yes Im agree with your last statement. Users protection are not guaranteed with the freedom that people gets with the used of bitcoin but it has a solution honestly. :)

With the amount of fraud that occurs in bitcoinland there will never be a real bitcoin alternative to ebay, when people get burned they'll just stop using it, plus it's much harder to get bitcoins than a Paypal account.

Paypal being funded with bitcoins, that would be awesome.

When you make paypal account, you need to make many verification while some exchange lets you buy bitcoin instantly or don't need to make complicated verification.

I have no idea what you're talking about.

It takes something like 10 minutes to make a Paypal account, you can't buy bitcoin in less than 10 minutes...

Paypal being funded with bitcoins, that would be awesome.

That would be very bad, paypal is centralized and do as they like with users funds/account.
There's no point of use bitcoin if it's centralized.

And don't think you even understood what I meant.

that is the best way of promoting bitcoin, it is always hard to talk about bitcoin and its benefits while there is very little usage for it and in some countries like mine there is no physical shop that accepts it.

The problem bitcoin has is that it is not a company which can sign a business contract with Amazon, ebay and promote itself as payment method for any any of big retailers.
Bitcoin is more like people's revolutionary payment method and unless it will become huge by itself it won't be regarded by large services like Amazon or eBay.
I don't think that Open Bazaar will change something here.

Yes, open bazaar is trying to be the alternate of ebay and amazon, but they need to promote their site to all over the world, they are only advertising to those platforms where only bitcoin users available, they should also have to go to other sites.
Yes, we now have openbazar, which is palying a good role for bitcoin users to provide them everything which they want to buy with their bitcoins, they will soon replace paypal.

I dont think so that openbazaar will replace ebay or amazon, This two fiat currency sites are running online and anyone knowing internet can use them but openbazaar have to be downloaded after that only you can use their services, and most of them dont want to download and then use it, If openbazaar was online site just like ebay or amazon then their were more chances of it is getting famous.

I suggest we all bitcointalk members start campaigning for Bitcoin and send email in numbers to various sites like ebay,Amazon etc to press them for accepting bitcoin

That's not the right way to promote bitcoin. Those trading giants will automatically adopt bitcoin when they feel there are lot users who prefer bitcoin transactions.
I think it would help to bitcoin if a lot of people request to add a payment method with bitcoin. ebay party will certainly know the number of customers who want to use bitcoin for their payment. This course will give you an advantage also for ebay. because of course their customers will increase.

But who will do that job of publicity? Bitcoin themselves can never go to the doors of people that come and join me, we all are using bitcoin and do not find a time to tell our neighbours about that currency, bitcoin need us for its publicity.

We have several sites similar to Ebay, which accept payments in Bitcoin. But unfortunately, none of them can match Ebay in popularity and user-base. Two years back, Bitmit was shaping as a major alternative for Ebay. I don't know what happened, but one day that site closed down without any warning. Now we have sites such as Bitify, but they are not as good as Bitmit.

We need sites like eBay to make Bitcoin popular. However not many startups is willing to accept Bitcoin as the only mode of payment like how eBay only accept PayPal (as far as I am aware, they try to make people pay using PayPal). It's like the chicken and egg issue here, we need sites to accept Bitcoin only to make Bitcoin popular but sites will not accept only Bitcoin unless Bitcoin is popular.

It may be confusing. However, having merchants (such as NewEgg and Overstock*) that opened up Bitcoin as an alternative payment method have surely helped Bitcoin.

* though both is unlike eBay idea.

we absolutely need something like ebay to promote bitcoin.
because I believe that the only effective thing that can help the adoption, and not only adopting new traders but adopting new real users is these types of places when regular people can actually spend bitcoin just like they spend money through paypal or other methods. sites like gyft,... have proven this already.

it doesn't matter how long you talk about benefits of bitcoin to new people, showing them sites like that does the work of a thousand words.

Well, I do agree that it will be a better thing for all Bitcoiners, and to a certain extent also for non Bitcoiners, to be able to spend their coins in more places, but this won't add much value to the point that it will give the average joes more incentive to jump into Bitcoin. Average joe type of people are very simple as they think like this - Why would I buy Bitcoin to spend it on Ebay or whatever other place, when I can buy everything already with fiat? In this case I happen to agree with them as well. Mainly because if you purely look at it from that point, then it doesn't make sense to buy Bitcoin first, where after that you spend it.

With only one popular site to advertise may not be that effective yet and that is why branding can be quite important for singapore. so we must really make full use of the social media to imprint a sense of branding on btc.

I had asked this before will eBay accept Bitcoin. I even had asked few sellers will they accept btc as payment however they said a no. They were just not ready for it. Plus the issue is we don't get guarantee if we do it. There is no doubt if eBay starts using Bitcoin it will shoot up. Every second guy will know about Bitcoins. But it's very difficult to see this happening, though I am dying for this to happen. It will make shopping so convenient. But for this we as customers have to make noise to get them on board.

Since bitcoin merchants are limited so bitcoin really needs it right now to help the adoption of it . The bigger and the popular the company the better like amazon and ebay but making them accept bitcoin will be hard cause many people are already demanding it but it keeps getting ignored maybe it will make a difference when at least half of our people demands it or maybe they are just afraid that bitcoin will be used for illegal purposes

By the way I know some two reputable online shops that accepts bitcoin

Currently there are some shops which accept bitcoin to provide goods but they are often a third party or they are much poor that they even are unable to promote their own sites so they remain dumped.

We don't need sites like ebay to promote bitcoin, we need ebay start accepting bitcoin. To start a site from beginning takes much time and takes more time to get reputation to become trusted like ebay. If ebay starts accepting bitcoin now, many people will use it, but if a new site accepts bitcoin, nobody will be influenced by that.

I have seen many websites, big ones (like Valve's Steam) that have implemented Bitcoin but it didn't make any change. In order to see a change, they need to somehow feature it on their website. Instead of silently adding it as a payment method, they should promote that on the first page, with a big ad. This way we'll see more people coming in our community. Yes, we need websites like ebay but unless they will feature Bitcoin in any way, we will see no change.

It would surely let bitcoins get some extreme exposure if they get listed as a way of payment at sites such as ebay and even if PayPal starts accepting it, then I think that Satoshi's dream of a million dollar bitcoin would become true in much less time. Bitcoins should get promoted on as much places as possible, so to let it become the mode of payments and used easily everywhere.

The issue about this is regardless of whether or not there are people who would use the site, it's how many people will join Bitcoin because of it. Bitcoin needs something new and unique, that everyone wants to use, in order for it to gain popularity. Anything that is already done by fiat isn't something Bitcoin can use to compete with effectively.

That's right everything that has something to do for the promotion of bitcoin is really needed and that can boost the demand of bitcoin by informing their potential customers. Just take a look at steam's acceptance of bitcoin, I'm pretty sure that helped a lot for the economy of bitcoin by informing their players that they are already accepting bitcoin.
My opinion by looking on steam which is accepting bitcoin the steam users themselves often don't give a shit and the news are spreading a lot but only among bitcoin users. Most of the people still use their payment option as before and seem that not going to own bitcoin or even learning about bitcoin furthermore. People are always seeking for the easiest way and as long they could go through into it, they will stay
I think that the acceptance of bitcoin in many stores will help the bitcoin users but not so effective for attracting people to learn bitcoin nor for advertisement

If many online shops will adopt bitcoin and add it on their payment options then it will attract more incoming bitcoin users because if they add bitcoin and explain all their good advantages in a simple way then it would be easy for their customers to understand and adopt bitcoin as soon as possible. We can do social media promotion because most of the people are on social media sites.

This will help spread bitcoin in the world of commerce and many businessman will be attracted to bitcoins and those traditional businessmen will have no choice but to adopt bitcoins. With that the future of bitcoin is great and the price will be jumping to the moon.

People will use a service as long as it is better and more practical, so if we have something that has already been done but we can do it better then it could work, look at casinos, casinos are very successful despite the fact there are thousands of casinos already and that is because they offer something unique thanks to bitcoin.

We need to understand that Paypal is mere a company, they didn’t invented anything new, while comparing it with bitcoin. Yes, I believe that it will be a good promotion if any major player starts accepting bitcoin and it will attract more users towards bitcoin but that is not the only way for the growth. There have been and are sites like Ebay for Bitcoin. I used to use Bitmit, but I think they actually got bought out by Ebay. Shame because it was a pretty good site. Theres also Bitify right now. I find that the problem though is due to the nature of Bitcoin and a certain niche it attracts, Bitify is a scam hole. I've made maybe 5 purchases and 3 of which were scams. Their support isn't too bad, so I didn't lose anything, but I'm sure because of the amount of scams they are severely understaffed. I had something like 1-2 week resolution times with support.

The biggest issue I'd imagine, is to be feasible, they would need Ebay like fees. Most Bitcoiners use Bitcoin because of the lack of fees involved, and may not be too thrilled to pay the 10% needed to get decent customer service, and staff that can dissuade scam attempts. While Ebay has plenty of scammers, Ebay has enough resources to take the hit themselves if need be, or take legal action to actually go after people. I don't think Bitcoin Ebay would have that sort of luxury, so if anything, they would need to increase fees to cover unavoidable losses.

I don't think ebay like e-commerce websites will do any good to bitcoin. Paypal is entirely a different ball game. Paypal is strictly regulated and follows rules. It was a path braking innovation at that time, but the money people used to pour in, was all fiat.

But bitcoin is a different electronic currency without any origin and it is not regulated by anyone. So, bitcoin popularity is basically based on the people's trust. It can't be measured by the way people can buy things from a marketplace. So bitcoin's price is the only factor which is increasing its fanbase and it will continue to do so. E-commerce sites will not be any help.

There have been and are sites like Ebay for Bitcoin. I used to use Bitmit, but I think they actually got bought out by Ebay. Shame because it was a pretty good site. Theres also Bitify right now. The problem with Bitcoin based services that mimic mainstream services like Ebay is it will not work. How can it compete with the mainstream services that uses credit cards and cash? It is much more accessible than Bitcoin will ever be. It should be time for us to realize this and embrace what niche where Bitcoin really thrives. The dark markets.

Ebay has played a great role in the success of PayPal in becoming leading payment processor.Do we need a similar ebay like site to popularize Bitcoin and make it leader in money transfer?

I think yes. Website like Ebay and amazon if they using bitcoin as the payment like paypal, it will bring a good and big news for all bitcoin users. Bitcoin become popular like paypal and every people around the world will try bitcoin. It's a good promotion for bitcoin though.

The issue about this is regardless of whether or not there are people who would use the site, it's how many people will join Bitcoin
because of it. Bitcoin needs something new and unique, that everyone wants to use, in order for it to gain popularity. Anything that is already done by fiat isn't something Bitcoin can use to compete with effectively.
I think using ebay or other sites even when these sites adopt bitcoin payment method, then it will really help to make the popularity of bitcoin well be high. or for the deployment of bitcoin to get more people adopt bitcoin

Good point. yes ebay played a major rule for paypal. but only epay is not responsible for this. we should consider amazon as well because it is equal to ebay marketplace in usage..
yes bitcoin also need marketplace's support to get a good place for future, I think now we got a better marketplace for bitcoin and it is Openbazaar.org.

Bitcoin don't need any publicity because already many people know about bitcoin, even daily magazines are publishing different articles either in form of good and bad things about bitcoin. So many people are willing to look at bitcoin and they are trying to learn some thing about bitcoin.

Bitcoin need  more exposure that it can get and this will create new market and bring more people to Bitcoin, for site like ebay to accept and promote Bitcoin will be a huge boast for it.

But unfortunately, eBay is already owning PayPal and promoting bitcoin will be the same as killing their own service, therefore, it's not going to happen or they will only enable 3rd party and not implementing bitcoin by themselves. I think the only way is to encourage some business which is providing similar service like eBay to implement bitcoin. It's the most effective way so far in my opinion

Actually, it is not as popular as you think and if it was popular, people would only know about it as a type of illegal currency which was used for illegal activities and stupid MLM schemes. In my countries, many people know about bitcoin but only few of them are truly having Bitcoin and using its for many purposes while the others believe Bitcoin is not a good thing to get involving in. Bitcoin is really in need support from some big and reputation company such as Microsoft or Ebay or Amazon
