ALL ABOUT THE 2016 EDITION BITCOIN PENNY™ COMMEMORATIVE COINS

The Bitcoin Penny Company is proud to present the NEW 2016 edition Bitcoin Penny™ Commemorative Coin -- now available in TWO (2) collectible variations!

The first collectible variation is our standard mint coin, aka the DAVE coin. On the front, you'll see our iconic trademarks "In Code We Trust" and "E-Currency Unum" along with our new stylized bitcoin (BTC) logo. You'll also see the new initials "DAVE" minted below the year. (Read more on the new DAVE initials, HERE (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1376099.0).) On the back, below our website address TheBitcoinPenny.com (https://thebitcoinpenny.com), is a simple line graph / chart of bitcoin's past, present, and future monetary values, as we like to see them. (This is an artistic representation only and may not be historically accurate. Please do not invest based on our artistic predictions. However, if you do invest and the investment pays off, then we expect a share of the profits.) At the bottom are the words, "Minted in USA." Our standard mint coin has a mintage of 2,000+ coins.

The second collectible variation is our special mint coin, aka the SN or Satoshi Nakamoto coin. Artistically, this coin differs in two (2) ways -- the initials "SN" below the date (instead of "DAVE") and the signature script "S. Nakamoto" on the back (instead of "Minted in USA"). However, the most important difference for serious cryptocoin collectors is the rarity of the mintage. Our special mint SN coins will have VERY LIMITED CIRCULATION and will be made available within select Bitcoin Penny™ products ONLY. (Please see our product list below.) This is a fun little homage to the classic hobby of coin roll hunting, and we hope you enjoy it!

Our coins are minted in the USA out of high grade copper for a quality coin that gives a nice R-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-N-G when you flip it!

I would like an original 2-pack with airtites for both of them. If anyone buys an SN roll let me know. I want one of them (or maybe I should do a group buy).

You could do a group buy and break open a SN roll.  That would be one less SN roll in the wild...

It would come down to 0.025 BTC per coin. I'd buy a few in your group buy :)

Thanks for the great photos, minerjones! ;D

Regarding the resin NFC coins, we had them specially made in a variety of colors, but we only used five colors for our Special Edition Rolls--yellow, red, blue, green, and purple (I believe). Two resin coins of each color for a total of ten (10) Special Edition Rolls.

As for the other packages we mailed out, I'm really excited to hear from our customers on their coin roll hunting experiences. What did it feel like searching through the Short Rolls / Classic Rolls for the special mint SN coin(s)? Was it fun? Was it cool? Was it exciting? Inquiring minds want to know! ;)

Oh, and more packages heading out this afternoon. Thank you, everyone! ;D

Regards,
Chris

I took some pictures of the 2016 Bitcoinpenny, I will share them this afternoon with you. I am doing an experiment: try to whether one coin to make it lok old or give some nice patin. But d*mn these coin are of awesome quality, I set one on fire, put in several acids but still.. just clean it water and it fine again  ;D For now I put one coin in my garden and see what the wheather does to it, I will take pictures of during a year.

I admit, I have been leaving Bitcoinpennies in random locations around where I live lately, just for fun. I've noticed a few have been found already, but I have no idea by whom. I also sometimes hide them around where I work (big place), as I'm not one to push bitcoin on co-workers or friends to be honest. I guess if I can get even a few people interested in this way, I figure I'm doing some good for bitcoin. :)

They are really awesome pennies, so shiny, I love them too! :)

That's such a nice idea :D

But leaving my pennies  ::)
Gotta think about it

Owlcatz, that's great news! I do that too! I used to work at a medium-sized state university, and I'd leave them all over campus. I'd drop them in parking lots, water puddles (they shine great underwater), public wishing fountains, geocaches, you name it! One of my favorites was to leave them in the change return of soda machines!

In fact, since our first website went live on the afternoon of December 31, 2014, we've always stated on at least one of its pages (as well as on our packaging) that these coins are small (at the time, almost all coins were 39mm) and inexpensive partially in order to promote the easy carrying of a few in your pocket to share with friends, strangers, or whomever you'd meet throughout the day. They were originally meant to give away in order to help promote bitcoin and the blockchain technology.

I still remember the very first coin I left in public. It was on the arm of the bench outside the Spartanburg (SC) Outback restaurant on the early evening of December 31, 2014. And the Busch Gardens of Tampa (Florida) has a few in its wishing fountain each summer. ;D

I tell you, nothing makes me smile as big as hearing stories of people leaving the coins in strange places for people to find.  ;D

Thank you for sharing the photos and ideas, guys! I look forward to more! ;D

Regards,
Chris

Thanks Chris! and feel free to use the photos. I will be making more pictures in the near future and post them on imgur, those you can use as well if you want. This coin is awesome and it is fun making pictures of it... maybe I will order some more to give away to friend or leave them on public places like owlcatz does, great way to promote bitcoin and these fine coins.

I absolutely LOVE the look of patina'd coins! Here is one I took last year of my personal, lucky 2015 Bitcoin Penny next to a shiny, new coin. My personal, lucky coin banged around in my pocket with loose change and keys for more than a month before this photo, with me handling it every five minutes! The patina is GORGEOUS! You'll see a subtle spectrum of colors, including bright copper, pink rose, emerald green, and hints of royal blue.

https://i.imgur.com/aY0NLeA.jpg

I've often thought about hosting a patina color contest, but I never thought anyone would be crazy enough to enjoy the patina as much as I do. :D

But if you want a good, colorful patina, then here's a little advice...

Our very first run of 1,000 coins were easier to patina. Since then, all coins come with an ultra thin protective finish. (Personally, I don't prefer the protective finish, but most collectors here would probably choose the shine over the patina, so that's the way we mint them.) The finish can be removed with simple acetone (fingernail polish remover). You can also use extremely mild and fine abrasive compounds like fine silver polish.

Once the protective finish is removed, the secret to developing a great patina is to keep rubbing the coin in your hands, between your fingers and thumbs, as often as you can, all day long. Then let is sit for a few days to darken. Then repeat. Once the coin is a dark brown, rub it between your fingers and thumb again, lightly. The top patina (brown) will be removed, leaving the bottom patina (rose, green, blue) exposed. It's a delicate balancing act to get the right patina, but TOTALLY worth it (if you appreciate a good patina).

Can't wait to see some photos of patina'd coins! ;D

Regards,
Chris

ONE HUNDRED !! in a BTCbag !! how cool is that !!  ;D I sure would want one if the price is right

I just removed the protection layer of one coin, made a special mix of salt, white wine vinegar, ammonia and plantnutrionsomethingsomething. I put that in thin can, the coin on a small piece of wood so it won't touch the liquid, closed the can with a lid and let the gasses do the work now for several hours  ;D very curious how it will turn out

Edit: mixure didn't work  ;D maybe I can get some nice acids at work... will try next week.

It's totally surprising that anyone else (except for me) would appreciate a good patina! In fact, I posted a photo of my personal patina'd coin in last year's thread and on our social media accounts (which I've sadly been neglecting this year), but my wife suggested that I should remove the photos, because people wouldn't want to see the pretty, shiny, new copper turning all kinds of dark and weathered. As I often do, I took her advice and removed the photos. (I may have posted them again later, though. I can't remember.)

It's good to see that others can appreciate the colorful rainbow patinas on a well-worn lucky coin! ;D

Me

And I see you chose the postcard doodle. As far as I know, it'll post for real. (OK, wait... That would be super cool. Put a stamp on it, then mail it to minerjones in the USA. That would be a seriously cool piece of bitcoin memorabilia--with all the stamps, postage marks, and international travel! If it went for auction, I'd TOTALLY bid on it!)

I collect and restore (and use) vintage / antique straight razors, and sometimes if the natural patina of the blade is too pretty to destroy, yet spotty in some places, I'll even out the patina with good ol' fashioned lemon juice. I haven't tried it on our copper coins, but it couldn't hurt.

That's interesting, never thought of collecting straight-razors, pretty neat. :)

So of course, I went to grab my wife's fingernail polish remover, and it's... Acetone-free.   ???

Thanks for the questions on our new bank bags project, guys. :)

No more NFC chip coins for 2016, sorry. Those are only available inside the 2016 Special Edition Rolls. (Of which, our last roll -- SE Roll No.09 -- is still available. Buy it now! ;))

The coins inside will be the real 2016 DAVE coins. These particular bags will be in very limited supply and sold at a solid discount (as opposed to buying 50 2-Packs, 100 Singles, etc) for the express purposes of distributing the coins to increase bitcoin awareness in the general public. In other words, by purchasing the bank bags of 100 coins, you're promising to give away most (if not all) of the coins to other people, free of charge. The bag is yours to keep as an interesting souvenir. :)

Chris

They should all be numbered and have NFC chips. I googled around and these are like pretty cheap and able to be customized easily from what I found!?  8)

BG4, no. No numbers on the bags. We really don't consider the bags themselves to be too valuable or collectible. Just an interesting souvenir. That's all. Of course, we could be wrong. Maybe they'll be collectible. Who knows?

owlcatz, sorry, but we can't do the NFC resin chips, because we promised to only issue those inside the 2016 Special Edition Rolls. But you're right; the bags themselves are pretty inexpensive. It's the 100 Bitcoin Penny™ inside that make the final price. ;) However, we may decide to not actually sell the bank bags, but rather drop them on auction with a very low starting bid. We really don't know at this point, but we should have all that figured out in the next few weeks. We'll definitely keep you posted.  :)

Thanks for the questions / feedback, guys! Always welcome.

Chris

Here's a quick shot of an old 2015 Bitcoin Penny™ with AWESOME color / patina -- it's almost entirely PURPLE on the top! (For comparison, the 2016 coin still has its protective coating, so the patination process is ULTRA slow.)

At your website, the price for the Classic Rolls is still 100$. How can we apply the 50% off ?
Those rolls also includes 3 special mint "SN" coins, correct ?

Thanks for the question, tweetious. The 50% OFF would apply to forum sales. (Although, if you purchase a Short Roll on our website for the same price, we'll be happy to upgrade you to the Classic Roll upon request.) Simply PM me with a list of what you want, and I'll quote you back with the final price + shipping. Just let me know if you're USA or international.

And, yes. The Classic Rolls include 3 special mint SN coins (and 37 standard mint DAVE coins).

Thanks again.

Chris

So I received my package today a day early then what the tracking said it would get to me. Below are photos

1. Most professional packaging for a physical coin I have received yet. I could shake the box and the stuff inside really didnt move
2. The packaging tape went all around the box and was put on with a tape gun
3. There was "fluff" on the inside, and a little hole was dug to fit the roll
4. The sticker and bubble wrap on the roll was totally unexpected and a pleasant surprise
5. I now have a new box to hold all my physical coins in

That's great, wttbs! Thanks for sharing this with us. I've always loved the way copper patinas over time!

Here are three that were sitting on my desk, including one that features a TON of beautiful deep purple!

https://i.imgur.com/Xs9B4yR.jpg

EDIT: And another photo of the same three coins (in slightly different lighting) after rubbing the purple coin for a few seconds to mute its purplicity.

https://i.imgur.com/0RXWnY2.jpg

And here is one of my favorite photos from 2015. (I believe it's the same coin from above.) It features a pretty moss green with tiny hints of royal blue.

https://i.imgur.com/aY0NLeA.jpg

Pro Tip: You can change the colors immediately on heavily patinated copper coins by rubbing your thumb over the surface for a minute. That'll change the chocolate brown to a purple/blue, and the purple/blue to a moss green.

The coins that I carry in my pockets on a daily basis usually look like the green promo photo above, due to the frequent handling.

Regards,
Chris

Yeah, those BTC pennies look even better once they've toned.

Do you know the exact composition of these coins?  The OP says this:

Our coins are minted in the USA out of high grade copper for a quality coin that gives a nice R-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-N-G when you flip it!
....but it isn't clear what the metal composition is of the coins.  Are they the standard zinc/copper formula that the US mint uses, for example, or something else?  I'm just curious to know.  Either way they do seem to age well based on the pics shown here.

Edit:
Bitcoin Penny™ Commemorative Coins are ninety-seven percent (97%) copper. The other 3% is a special proprietary formula belonging to the mint.
Thanks for the answer--I wasn't sure if it was a secret or if you'd mentioned the composition elsewhere.  And yeah, at 97% Cu, that's even higher than the pre-1982 US pennies that I've been hoarding for a while now (I know some of the '82s are 95%, but I don't have the patience or a scale to separate them).  The new, mostly-zinc pennies look nice and shiny when they're just released, but they definitely don't age half as nicely as yours do.  Props on a nice-looking collectible!

Yeah, those BTC pennies look even better once they've toned.

Do you know the exact composition of these coins?  The OP says this:

Thanks for the question, Pharmacist.

Bitcoin Penny™ Commemorative Coins are ninety-seven percent (97%) copper. The other 3% is a special proprietary formula belonging to the mint. (I expect it's simply a unique mix of the usual metals — nickel, zinc, etc.) As you probably know, the current U.S. penny is only 3% copper. In fact, the U.S. penny hasn’t been minted with this much copper since 1837!

Since mid-2015, our coins have been finished with an ultra thin protective lacquer to keep them shiny and to reduce any unwanted patina. Personally, I love the patina, so I often remove the clear lacquer on my own "lucky" coins with a little of my wife's nail polish remover. However, if you can find one of our very first 2015 coins (the ones in the coin-flip orientation), those were minted without the protective finish, so those will change colors very nicely over the years. (I wish I had a lot more of those!)

Thanks again!

Regards,
Chris
