Will bitcoin still be the preferred cryptocurrency after 10 years or will something better take over?

if you're expecting to get a sure answer to this you're going to be disappointed. no one knows what will happen in 10 years.
my speculation: yes, bitcoin will still be the most used cryptocurrency.

I say yes.  Ten years seems like a long time but bitcoin is already 7 years old and it's dominant by a wide margin.   If crypto is still around in 10 years then I'm pretty sure it'll still be dominant.

Bitcoin will continue to be the most dominant cryptocurrency. No other coins have the market adoption. No other coins have the mindshare of the general population. No other coins have the public utility. Bitcoin is the standard bearer, all other coins are copies.

it is too hard to predict the bitcoin state in 10 years, because by that time there might be even better technology that can easily replace bitcoin. but it is also possible that bitcoin become one of the best and most used cryptocurrencies by then.

I think bitcoin will still be the preferred cryptocurrency even after ten years. Is it possible something better than bitcoin will be created? Sure, it's possible. But it has got to be something profoundly better than bitcoin in most ways. And if that better than bitcoin cryptocurrency does come, it will have to weather the test of time just like bitcoin has done and continues to do.

I think so. There's just so much to lose if bitcoin would be takeover by some other coin. The fact that merchants aren't even accepting other coin that claims to be better than btc and until they kept accepting btc, it will still be the top coin to be used. This forum will be the first to fade when bitcoin starts to be ignored.

Of course, bitcoin will be the most preferred cryptocurrency even after 10 years, as bitcoin is widely getting accepted by more merchants and it getting more adoption now a days.

The question isn't even clear, so it is pretty hard to give an answer.  After 10 years of being made, would only be a couple of years, so most probably Bitcoin will stay no 1.

In 10 years time, i.e. 2026, I would expect that a more transactional crypto will be number 1.  Bitcoin is too slow and limited on number of transactions to be used for everyday small transactions, so I expect a better Crypto to take over.  I expect that that crypto hasn't been made yet.

Bitcoin has many years on all other coins, litecoin and namecoin were the 2nd ones behind if i remember right.  The longer time goes by the more its looking like bitcoin will be used as the store of value crypto and others might provide services for it.

By then bitcoin might be the preferred to handle the largest transactions between global corporations, governments and banks etc. 1 bitcoin might have a huge value by then. But I don't think it won't be preferred for buying a coffee in starbucks. It is not really suited to small transactions.

Or not! Who the heck really knows ?  ;D

no one can answer that, but if bitcoin gets developed further and more parties are interested to give bitcoin a huge boost by getting it listed in professional (stock like) exchanges for example, then bitcoin will continue to grow and that will make sure bitcoin is still leading after a decade.

It is hard to predict 10 years ahead.

However this year - 2016 - is a big year for BTC. We don't know if it will survive the halvening let alone whether it survives the civil war that is going on in bitcoin space.

I think it is significant that both Gemini and BTC-E have announced that they are offering ETHer trading - it seems to me that they're trying to hedge their bets just in case bitcoin doesn't make it.

I would say yes. Unless there won't be any planned offensive vs bitcoin created by the governments. Today I read that government wants to introduce new anti TOR law.
Anyone who is using TOR to access the internet could be prosecuted for doing so. And I think hunting people who use TOR is just beginning of a witch hunt -  and bitcoin could be next.

the first one to do something is not always the one who succeeds, in fact it often is not.

with bitcoin it might be different, but there's no way of knowing

if we already knew what would be the major currency in the next 10 years, that currency would skyrocket in price immediatly.

obviously no one knows, so it's anyones guess.

There are more supporters with bitcoin so bitcoin will be at first position, and none of the other account will be at first position, so even after 10 years everyone will prefer bitcoin and will use bitcoin for their online shopping etc.

I think all other crypto currencies are much weaker in competition to bitcoin, so bitcoin will be No.1 for more period and I think it will continue to be No.1 for centuries and other currencies will have much lesser time period.

I think we're going to know before then. Anyone who comes out with 'too big to fail' is tripping their tits off. Similarly screaming 'Bitcoin killer' because a few thousand people are trading something they probably know nothing about is equally daffy.

To get beyond exchanges and into the hands of real people is what's going to decide it. Doesn't look like anything has touched the daddy yet.

Most likely. But I can't say with 100% that there won't be another digital currency coming very close to Bitcoin or even surpassing it at some point in the future. Nearly everything in the world gets replaced at some point.

you have to know that it is really hard to predict that in future, it is very hard to predict price after 10 years and so, nobody know that you you won't get correct answer

but personally i think that it probably will be main crypto, and i think because it is most expensive one, and many stores accepts bitcoin only not other coins, so i think it will be preferred

Replaced yes. You can say that about hardware, tools and physical items. But Bitcoin is a code - it can be upgraded, there is not need to ditch it and create something totally different.
All we need is code revision and bitcoin network will be as good as new.

Bitcoin used for the preferred currency yes.

Will there be side chains for micro stuff, yes. So I feel like bitcoin will stay as it is, and 1 major alt coin that will service all the side chains if possible for lesser confirmation times.

Actually, as i understand your question, i have a 2 points in my mind,
1. If bitcoin continuously growing up and maintain its status than definitely, everyone use it and work with bitcoin and after 10 years, bitcoin would be gotten more popularity.
Secondly, if you wanna ask bitcoin still remain in a crypto currency or changed into other crypto or fiat currency?
Than my answer is No, because now many other crypto currency has come but still bitcoin has its own place, and also bitcoin has no need to change into fiat currency.

I believe so, I imagine it to grow to the level where it becomes the kind of gold of the Crypto world and we will have all manner of other alt coins being traded as they are now but more in the mainstream and even featured on the likes of MSNBC and Bloomberg.

There are times when it's better to ask the negative side so we can rephrase this to: "If bitcoin isn't the preferred cryptocurrency, then what is?" ETH? Dash? Zcash? I don't think so. Bitcoin will continuously grow together with all the other altcoins. Cryptocurrencies grow as one. They aren't competing against each other. The increase of popularity in one coin will also increase the popularity of bitcoin. I can't see a reason right now as to why our attention to bitcoin will be replaced by another one.

This is what my opinion too, if we base our prediction on the current happening, there is no doubt that bitcoin will be the preferred cryptocurrency after 10 years, but, there are several factor that will make bitcoin less preferred cryptocurrency.   If bitcoin failed to be mass friendly and new coin that emerged  has functionality way secured and more mass friendly than bitcoin, and was promoted perfectly, then maybe the term most preferred of bitcoin will be tested.  And 10 years is very long year to develop a more sophisticated coins.

There was one coin that surpassed bitcoin lately namely zcash. I did understand how it works lately and indeed is a cool coin having some feature whether to create an anon or non-anon coin. It would have been the best coin if it weren't for bitcoin's adoption. Sooner though with the arise of the platforms, they might just take over.

Altcoins are mostly a mess. In terms of life expectancy, bitcoin has no competition at all. No one is going to willingly put their money into a cryptocurrency that has no realistic expectations to live in the long term, and bitcoin is the only crypto that has that trait: long term trust. So no, it will not get replaced by any other crypto as the king of crypto, it will reign supreme and it will be worth hundred thousands of inflation adjusted dollars.

I'm not so sure about that. Ten years is a long time, and who knows what the technical evolution will bring us.
Imagine a crypto currency backed up by a major company. Let's say apple would decide to make the step into crypto.
With their capital, their community and their advertising skills, they could easily create an altcoin the world has not seen yet.

Not only is the whole altcoin section a mess, but it's also a fact that barely anyone takes altcoins serious. Altcoins only serve as a speculative tool for people with a get rich quick mentality. When it comes to their gimmick features, it's great to name them up as an advantage to get people interested in that specific coin, but they don't get any real world usage. It's there just to boost the price, and that's it.

Everything leads me to believe yes. Bitcoin didn't reach to the top yet, the glory will come yet. It's the main crypto currency, but compared to all other main world currencies, btc is nothing yet. No one altcoin can take the place of bitcoin for the next several years, and I would risk say, decades.
Bitcoin is the most structured virtual currency, the favorite one!

At least by now some coin could have grown defeating bitcoin, so the competence increases generating demand among public.

And this altcoin will be no different that current systems we already have. Think of it like advanced version virtual premium token you can find in games - like gold, crystals, gems.
Apple is fond of their extremely closed architecture - their coin would be hosted privately and backed by their own private blockchain. Do you think it would be secure option?

Although, no one knows what the future holds, but we are still at liberty to predict what it will look like which could be correct or could not be. But based on the facts available, I dont think anyone will think otherwise that Bitcoin has come to stay not only because its only the most popular but I am looking at the interest it has generated from outside the community and discussions going on then one would not think anywhere far to arrive at that position.

Looks like Bitcoin is light years ahead of competition (if there is one which I strongly doubt). None of the altcoins stood up to the test of time obviously. Bitcoin was, is and will be unique and one of a kind. At the moment there are no preconditions for any quality developments in the crypto domain that could lead to any product that could eventually become a match to bitcoin. Not judging by the look  things look right now.

Yes. You can pass the test of code but you can never pass the test of time easily. Most altcoins are pump and dump schemes and are set up only to benefit the founder and the early investors who invested in the ICO. You, as the user is the victim.

Altcoins are investments while bitcoin is a genuine alternative currency.

I agree on this.  Bitcoin had been evolving and will always evolve according to the need of situation.  There maybe hiccups but bitcoin will overcome them.  There will some contender that will challenge bitcoin but bitcoin being established and tested will always prevail.  By that time in my opinion bitcoin had established its use and widely accepted in different country.

Bitcoin's pretty much established already, it'll take a major security flaw to take it down.

I think altcoins are the one existing contenser of bitcoin nut theres no one among them step up and de fame the bitcoins since as you said bitcoins is establish and people will surely settled using that since we can make sure that we are on the safe e currency who's gonna lift up our money for staking and i will not surprise bitcoin will truly became as stronger e currency existing in the future, all we need to is to keep our faith tight for it.

Of course it will. All the altcoins are some fancy toys that can serve some purpose, that's true, but none has the importance Bitcoin has.

it is obvious that the current existing altcoins are mostly for pump and dump reasons and there is so little interest in any of them but you can't say nothing new will come along in 10 years changing the way we think about cryptocurreneis just the same way there there were no bitcoin 10 years ago.

Exactly, we can't remove the chance that another type of crypto or digital currency will just come out that can make bitcoins out of the league.

But if I will just look at what is happening today, I can just say that bitcoin will still be the most preferred crypto currency after 10 years.

Because the adoption of it is already on the go and there are numbers of merchants and stores who are already adopting it.

I feel bitcoin will last for a lifetime. Even if there are serious flaws, if the developers can fix it before it is exploited by anyone, it will be all fine. No need to worry about quantum computer as the algorithm can be updated to quantum resistant algorithms. Bitcoin is here  to stay and thrive. Believe that!

well, pretty easy to get a bitcoin, but those who are weak will the technology have not been aware of it. but, I'm sure someday they will realize the potential of bitcoin that currently exist, and it will make them compete to seek bitcoin bitcoin to become more popular than it is today, and it probably will last up to 10 or 100 years down the road

Even for 100 years ? I am not ready to go that far. But with records of last ~7 years we may able to project for next 10 years and may conclude the adaptation rate and how sure bitcoin will stay as preferred cryptocurrency. I too believe there will not be any drastic changes that may change people's preferences.

For now, bitcoin is the preferred crypto for the next 10 years but things in crypto change very quickly in a blink of an eye. It will not be surprising to see a competitor challenging bitcoin for its position in the next decade. At the moment, I see that there are no threats to bitcoin position.

But if something changes for Bitcoin for worse, it will stil remain the first cryptocurrency and we have to remember this.

Aside from that the base users of bitcoin keep on increasing each day, there are also lots of developer supporting and testing developments for  bitcoins, and it is the most active in development among cryptocurrency.  And I believe that whatever has made today will have a great impact tomorrow.  So as long as this two are kept by bitcoin then no altcoins will ever replace it.

By then bitcoin might be the preferred to handle the largest transactions between global corporations, governments and banks etc. 1 bitcoin might have a huge value by then. But I don't think it won't be preferred for buying a coffee in starbucks. It is not really suited to small transactions.

Or not! Who the heck really knows ?  ;D

10 years from now is a long time. The dominant cryptocurrency in 10 years might not even exist now.
A couple of years ago, nobody would have thought that Ethereum would grow and command a market capitalization of 10% of Bitcoin.

To predict the next 10 years I can not do. It will adjust situation bitcoin in the years coming. We do not know whether bitcoin will keep growing or otherwise. In addition there are many crypto that can shift bitcoin as a favorite. If the bitcoin coming can not compete and evolve will surely be replaced. But until now I personally believe that bitcoin will be able to grow and remains a favorite crypto.

Most likely it will not be, technology moves forward so fast and new people will adapt crypto.
From the current coins I think it is Monero that will survive and gain a significiant market capitalization. Monero may not reach the market cap of bitcoin but I think from the current levels it has significiant growth potential and yes even there is a chance it will go beyond. Will Monero be the best coin from now to eternity...? Most likely not, but among the current ones it will be definetely a good choice for some time at least (be it 3 years or 8 years or...)

Even after 10 or more years, bitcoin will continue to be the best crytocurrency of all time. The reason on which I believe is its enormous growth that took place in a very small time period of about 8years time. Very few other than bitcoin has a rising potential. Future can't be predicted exactly but based on bitcoin's acceptance its confirms that no other currency will take the place of bitcoin.

for sure ,it would make a great coin for dark markets ,tax evaders and under the table deals
(these are precisely the reason i invested in it )

i dont think it will be traded on the nasdaq and wall st though ,areas where bitcoin is already pushing into
as i think governments will consider it a criminals coin..........and some of the hate will shift from btc to xmr

We can't so sure about bitcoin in 10 years later, it's a long way to go and there is no certain answer about that which we could only speculate and predict it. According to the bitcoin track record and cryptocurrency world nowadays, bitcoin still lead the market and become major digital currency. All of those coins created because of bitcoin has invented and be the preferred of new coin, but none could equal compare to bitcoin, I think bitcoin still be the preferred in 10 years later.

In 10 years, bitcoin will still there, on the network and keep growing and getting bigger market cap.
People will realize how bitcoin could beneficial for them to storing their wealth instead of fiat money.

Well, today Bitcoin is getting 8 years old. Happy birthday!

So my answer is: Very probably yes. 10 years from the start by Satoshi would be 2019, that's less time from now than the November 2013 bubble.

Serious competitors could emerge in these last years of the 2010s, but they need to grow organically and build up the network and community Bitcoin already has. That takes time. But there are probably improvements like a less energy consuming algorithm (probably not the current incarnations of PoS) that could be a serious challenge for Bitcoin's supremacy in the cryptocurrency world at some point in the future.

Bitcoin has a huge head start and it has the recognition of the people, even if adoption is very low at least bitcoin is by far the most known of all the cryptocurrencies, but it seems we are trapped in some kind of conflict and the development has stalled if this does not change then another crypto with a more intense development could surpass bitcoin.
