Title: If you recieved random BTC, would you return it?
Post by: thejaytiesto on June 27, 2016, 11:23:33 PM
Let's say you wake up some day and you get like 1 BTC. For me this is a lot. What do you do? You return back the BTC to the owner, do you keep it? and why.

I don't know what I would do to be honest. I mean who knows if the guy that just sent you this is a criminal or a good man? Very tough decision. For someone like me that has a small BTC wallet and is trying to make as much BTC as possible before its too late due price going too high, it would be hard to return it, but I would feel bad to keep it too.

It would be pretty hard for somebody to inadvertently send you a bitcoin.

Yes, it's pretty hard to mistakingly change a letter for another letter and that address actually existing, but stranger things have happened. In this forum people has reported recieving Bitcoin out of nowhere, so I guess out of millions of transactions it can happen.

if I got it for free, then I would not give it back. I think it was a gift for me because of the possibility of wrong delivery address wallet does not seem likely.

A total random mistake like the one I defined above (like having 12rqhr98r98ry98qYR89qr9q or whatever, and sending it to 12rqhr98r98ry98qYR89qr9w because you mistake q for w) is really, really, really unlikely.

But, copy-pasting the wrong address, for example the guy had one of your addresses in the past and he was intending to sell 1 BTC somewhere else but mistakenly copy pastes your address instead

Or you waiting for 0.1 BTC but sender makes a mistake and sends 1.0....

this is more realistic and can statistically happen considering how many transactions happen daily.

I doubt I would notice as all my btc is in cold storage. I also would have no idea how to contact who sent me the btc. I wouldn't want to send it back to the same address because it might be an address for an exchange where the btc would just get lost.

Well it happened to me when I inadvertently sent BTC to the wrong person, it happened when I have a list of BTC that I need to send a particular amount of BTC so I copy and paste the BTC address and send. Luckily the guy send it back because he knew he received his pay already.

In the first case, I would have received a previous transaction and be familiar with the sender so I would return the coins.
In the second case I would also be familiar with the sender and would refund the difference (maybe after subtracting the transaction fee in either case). Now, this could be problematic as the sending address could be from an exchange or a mining pool account and the coins would not actually be received by the sender.  I guess it would be prudent to try to contact the person before sending the coins back if possible.  Hopefully people would only send coins from wallets under their direct control.
I could never keep something that wasn't intended for me.

I'd probably just keep it especially if I didn't know where it came from. What if the address I was sending it back to was just an exchange address? Better in my hands then in limbo...

so you receive bitcoin from god. and you should receive it dude.

Honestly, I wouldn't.

I mean, what are the chances of me getting bitcoins randomly? <0.00001%. There are just so much addresses and it would have been very lucky for me to receive coins randomly. However, I would return the coins if the sender asks me to return it, but I'll keep a few of it as compensation from his mistake.

If I receive a random bitcoin I will gladly return it. But the problem is to whom will i give it back. I will return it if the person who send me btc will show up and claim it from me by presenting datas tha he or she owns the btc. But at the end of the day I will not use that bitcoin until that person who owns that bitcoins shows up. It is not mine to its not for me thats my motto.

Why would I return it?  The person who sent it obviously doesn't know to spend it properly,  and who knows what he'll do with it next.  Returning it would only be wasting good bitcoin.   :o

I would if he can prove that he is the owner of the bitcoins tht was mistakenly sent to me. I wouldn't just send it back to the address which was sent to me though. I mean I will wait for them to contact me and provide proof of ownership if they are telling the truth. If nothing came to take it bac then maybe I'll just keep it safe in the meantime and think over if I'll use it or not.

Yes, I'll probably return it, IF the person could trace and contact me the soonest possible otherwise I may spend in at tradings.. lol, honestly, i am willing to return it as long as I will not give so much effort to whoever sent me or rather know from where the heavens it came from.  ;D

Yep, this is pretty true. I feel like what OP is really getting at is the same real life scenario of someone leaving some money on a table by accident and you find it, or a wallet - would you return it to its owner or go out of your way to find the owner.

I would also do this! No point in sending it back. I would then keep it and probably invest in something or maybe just hold on to it for a while until I can figure out what to do with it or when the prices change to my liking.

This is pretty weak justification for keeping something that isn't rightfully yours.  The coins have readily identifiable ownership linked to them - the sending address.  If you found a wallet on the street which contained money and identification, would you keep that because the person "obviously doesn't know" how to possess a wallet?

It's difficult to answer but i think that i would send them back i'd rather return the money to a criminal than steal them from a good guy who needs them...even if they come fron a criminal i don't  want his dirty money.

I would most likely keep it because I don't know if someone was just trying to be nice to someone else. I know that's unlikely, but there's no way to know. If it's a large amount, then I may feel too guilty to keep it though.

That's not impossible to happen to anyone, but somehow with a little chance. For me, I'll return it back but I will make sure that I will send it to the right person. I believe on Rachel Grady's quote:  “Always put yourself in others' shoes. If you feel that it hurts you, it probably hurts the other person, too.” When I sent my btc to a wrong address, I would like to get my money back, yes maybe I have a mistake, but that's not an intention to happen.

It depends on the situation I got. If I get it without knowing the person is then 50% I would use to fold the Bitcoin duplicate and 50% I would use to help others or I save. For if I do not know the person who sent it then I reserve the right to use it on the condition that he announced to everyone and if there are no claiming that it belongs to me

I think you've got a self-serving bias resulting from a need to maintain and perhaps to enhance your self-esteem.  You attribute your behavior in this situation to others.  You need to think outside your box; good people would give it back.

You're shitting me right?  Would you give me your contact info if I send you some coins? How would the sender go about contacting you once the error was realized?!
You can confirm that the sender is the owner by sending the coins back to the address from which it came.  I can't believe the number of people saying they would keep it and your justifications are so fucking lame.

The right way, but I think it would be very hard to do if the owner does not know the addres you used, as in the bitcoin every addres does not have a clear identity and name (without the name) this might be very difficult to do, unless you make the information on all social media

If i receive that btc to my wallet well i will not give it back because its not a mistake, wallet address is pretty obvious and no other similar on it except the first 3 charater, and I guess its a gift also from the sender and what the hell he sendd to you a btc so most prabably its a gift. And thanks for that if it will happen.

I'd accept it, chances are... They saw my address and decided to send me bitcoin. So Thank you very much.

The problem is that you don't know whether or not the person made a mistake. Some times people randomly send coins to an address just for the fun. If I happen to receive a decent amount like 1BTC, then I will keep it in my wallet for a month to give the person the time to send me a dust transaction including a comment where he is asking his coins back. I will then return it. If after a month there is still nothing from that person, then I'll keep them for ever.

I think it won't happen because how can people send to wrong address, even they accidentally change/delete some characters in bitcoin address, the wallet should notify that it's not valid bitcoin address (More Info (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1026.0))
But, if i received random BTC, i won't give it back or find who send it. I only return it back if the owner is looking his/her/their bitcoin by make public announcement or send a request to me with proof such as sign message and why they accidentally send the bitcoin to me.

I agree that there is a very slim chance of it being accidentally sent to my address.  If I have my address in public, this might be a tip or something.  You don't need to find or send it back because if it was a mistake then more likely they will send a small amount with signed message asking you to return it.  If they do, I will send it back without hesitation of course. Else I would think of it as a tip to whatever good deed i done :D

To be honest I do not think so, it also depends on how much we are talking about. If I just got 0,1 BCT then I would return it because it is not much.
I would not return a whole BTC or above because then we are talking real money and I am not giving that up.

Well I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to try and find the owner  ::) The way I see it if you're careless enough to send BTC to the wrong address, the amount you sent probably don't mean a lot to you anyway. If it happened to me, I would write it off as a loss immediately, regardless of the amount.
I'd likely get the iPhone 7 with that 1 BTC and I wouldn't lose sleep over it either  :P

I think almost of the users will say no because first it will be hard for us to know if that bitcoin address that send us some bitcoin is the real owner second why would miss that opportunity to get that amount in a easy as 1,2,3 ;D. This question is not about Bitcoin at all, it is mainly about moral code of every single one of us. As receiving BTC is not linked to any possible threat, most of us wount never give it back.
I guess only extreme wealthy bitcoiners (or saints) could potentially avoid temptation and sent that money back. That is the harsh truth.

I would return it if it's obvious it comes from one sender.

When it seems to come from an exchange or gambling site with multiple addresses and such i will hold on to it for a while untill someone can send me some proof.

How could they send you proof?  Are you expecting a blockchain message in a second transaction to you?

Let's say you wake up some day and you get like 1 BTC. For me this is a lot. What do you do? You return back the BTC to the owner, do you keep it? and why.

I don't know what I would do to be honest. I mean who knows if the guy that just sent you this is a criminal or a good man? Very tough decision. For someone like me that has a small BTC wallet and is trying to make as much BTC as possible before its too late due price going too high, it would be hard to return it, but I would feel bad to keep it too.

It would depend on how lazy I am at that moment. I'm usually very lazy overall so no, it's my coin now. If it happened on a gambling site and someone tipped me a coin by accident, then of course I would send it back instantly..  ;D

It would depend on the sum and the original owner would need to make contact that he/she made a mistake. If it was a larger sum (> 0,01 BTC) I would return it on request to a specified address. However the request should be made within two weeks after sending the funds with some kind of proof of rightful ownership.

I don't think it is advisable to simply return Bitcoin received in error to the sender without prior investigation. Among other things it may be possible that the coins where sent out of a web wallet and might be lost, if the sender is not in full control of the sending address.

Also it is extremely unlikely to receive Bitcoin from a total stranger due to error, because he/she needs to actively select your address.

I'll try to announce in this forum, if it is still difficult to find any signs or evidence of who the owner is. I might save it in a few weeks. then maybe I'll use :)

No I do not think that I would return it, I would sell them right away to make some money. There is no reason for me to return it because I can sure use the money, maybe if that preson really needed it back and send me a nice e-mail on why they need it.

Do you use your bitcoin address as an email address as well?  How in the world is anyone going to email you about this error?  You have so many posts but don't know the basics of bitcoin...
 Also you are dishonest.

For my personal better to return it to their owner, because I don't want to eat the food I can buy from the wrong way. 1 BTC is the big amount and enough to make someone become greedy. I always hold my good thing in my brain to avoid the wrong way. but is sure some people have a different statement about this.

Yep. If the person is a total butthole, then I wouldn't want to return the coins to him but if he asks nicely and sincerely, then I might've returned it to him. However, I might ask for a little amount as compensation for his mistake. Not much, just a little.

I will keep for myself. I don't know if he/she wanted to send a gift to me. And i think that its possible that if i give it back to the same address could be an exchange address and the user will not receive it back.
In case that the bitcoin user contact me (witch is very difficult), and sign a message from the sending address asking for its bitcoin i will return it back.

How that guy would found is the number where he mistaken and sent 1 BTC exist or no? He couldn't write me even a letter like "hey, I mistaken number can you return me?" Who cares?! What's  done is done. It's not my problem, it's his. Next time be careful and use copy paste about wallets' numbers.

If my wallet is fat enough at that time, for sure I will send the money back even the owner didnt ask it back.

Because. I don't know the source of the fund. Small amount of dirty fund is ok for me, but not any serious amount. So I will definitely return it.

I will only wait form 1-2 days for the owner to contact me through transaction with a message that he wants his bitcoins back and i will confirm and send him back the bitcoin and will take 0.2 and the rest of 0.8 will be sent back :P . No one is going to send you the btc randomly unless you are damn lucky.

what you said is correct that no one is their who would return it and the most important part is how would you know who has sent you , even if any one wants to return it as through Wallet Address we cannot find the user. So i think this question has not point to prove.

If there's a possibility then why not returned it right? But I think people who send their coins accidentally is not really an accident because wallet address are case sensitive and most of them are so unique, so probably it was intentional.

If I knew the person personally or if I knew the person because of a business deal/transaction and they sent me the bitcoin by mistake or accidentally sent me more than what was owed, then yes, I would send it back for sure.

If it was a random person who I didn't know personally or not involving a business transaction, I wouldn't do anything until that person contacted me and then try to sort things out. How long I would wait before I considered just keeping the bitcoin for myself... I don;t know.

As far as I know technically and logically this is not possible to receive any amount by its own without having previous transaction with that address. This thing makes bitcoin unique that you always need to copy/past address and if somehow any digit is missing it will not perform transaction.Let's suppose this happens anyhow then in case of being contacted will return for sure.

If i know the person that sent me the bitcoins then I would ask him/them about the reason of this transaction.
If they wanted this to happen then i would say thank you :P but if it was a mistake then i would return them the total amount - tx fee.

I would probably keep it. I am not proud of this but that's human nature for you. Easier for me to be honest about this under a pseudonymous name :)
well i guess it would depend on how much bitcoins i would get from it, in my opinion the person who missends it does not need it too much if he or she can allow such mistake

I probably wouldn't notice as I rarely check my Bitcoin wallet balance. If I did notice then it would be a moral dilemma. When I see people leave money behind I flag them down and return it - but I may think twice with coin.

Perhaps I would invest it and return it after turning a profit ;)

If it is random, how can you know if it was meant to you or not?

Maybe someone sent you the bitcoins by purpose and the bitcoins are yours

The honorable thing would be to return it, but I wouldn't to be honest. Especially since I have no idea where it came from.   It's not like when someone drops money on the ground and you pick it up.

But really, I have a better chance of getting struck by lightning while win the PowerBall....

A strange situation, you mean i would got it because he accidentally had put my wallet address while transfering whole bitcoin?
The chances that this situation is going to happen are well... a BIT small, but i guess i would say the same like you,it may be hard to return it :)

I would hope anyone would return it but not necessarily to the same address. If I couldn't figure out who sent it I would keep it until I did, then return it after getting a signed message from the sending address.

I don't usually publicize my addresses. If someone sent me coins to one of my addresses and I wasn't expecting it, it means they were snooping the blockchain and my addresse(s) in particular. I would be super pissed off and probably keep the coins just to teach them a lesson for snooping.

However, I would make some effort to figure out that it was not sent truly by accident and not because of snooping (copy pasting my addresses). If this were the case I would return the coins.

Yes because we don't know about their needs, maybe they want to use this bitcoin to pay their children' education. but I prefer to return it because I sure this amount have relationships with their living. it is worth for them.

I think that I would sent it back but I maybe also would look up from who the address, I would not sent it blindly back.
If it was from a sort of ponzi I would hold it for sure without any doubts,
Lol I think bitcoin address of Ponzi will not send bitcoin that bitcoin address not listed on their site they use robots that run automatically so it is less likely to incorrectly send bitcoin
unless someone incorrectly sent to a specific address bitcoin that they did not realize

I will not send it back or return it because it's a blessing and we need to accept it lol. Lets be honest it's a very easy way to get profit because if we don't have much source of bitcoin i think most of the users will do the same. If it's 1 bitcoin or more, why would need to give it back. C'mon lets be practical, only few users are living their mind in the past that almost people are saints and good.

For me it is quite a difficult question in my current impoverished situation. But I'm the kind of person that will never accept other people's money, if they came to me by mistake. Who knows what was behind that money. Can people really worked hard and long to get them, and this way for a moment, lost them. Most of all, I would return.

But still if I know how to send it back then why not. Some of us dont really know how to do it. They just create an account, put bitcoin in there then leave it.

Can't decide. It's his fault actually of getting wrong with the address he's sent to.
We all know that making transactions are sensitive.

On the other hand, I might feel guilty knowing it is truly his bitcoins. Especially if it's high amount.

Its really difficult to find the real person once you received it as even if you return it back then you need to make sure that you  sent it to the right person.

There's no such thing at making it happen because a wallet address is so specific and case sensitive that if you mistype one word it might not have a owner on where the address you send it.

If you mistype one character of an address chances are that it would fail validation and your wallet would not even allow you to send coins to that mistyped address.

Well for me this question depends if the sender knows me or not since people would not just mistakenly send you bitcoin since addresses to each account is very different and rare to have an almost the same address. So this got me curious that people who copied your address would know you or it could in a site that has an event for bitcoin and mistakenly sens the wrong amount. So I would definitely say that I would not send back the amount that I received if i dont know sender.

if i receive a large enough amount that it is considered big then i would most probably return it to its owner because it is not my money to keep and i would never like to be on the other end of this situation myself.

but before doing it would ask for a signed message from the sending address first to make sure he is telling the truth.

Yeah agree with how would say that they want back his bitcoin? when they don't know that who had bitcoin address ? because there is no any name in bitcoin address? because bitcoin is anonymous? 1 bitcoin is getting near to about a $700 so i am not sure if i am strong enough to resist keeping it. that would be a hard thing to give it back.

but if i see the real owner asking for it back i would most probably give it back to him.

XD Sneak on a gambling site, earn an extra 1BTC then return it back to him if you're successful. If you fail then i guess you can just say it was tough luck. I think any respectable person would return it. This type of thing can happen when, for example, someone copy/pastes an address from the wrong profile.

if I get it in a very large number, I'll get it back, but if it is very little, I probably will not return, because it will be very troublesome. I'm sure the person who sent bitcoin in small quantities may not be concerned with bitcoin which he submitted on the wrong address, because in not doing it carefully, but if it involves big money, maybe I'll give it back

Just do what ever to whom ever as you like others to do with your self.
Let's say it is indeed his fault for having his coins sent to the wrong person.
Putting yourself in the same situation, of course, you'd feel very bad for yourself and that person. But are you obliged to return the coins?

I don't think there is such but it would then turn to question your sense of morality as to whether you will return it or not.

this is a rather hard question to answer. i think it depends on how much i am tempted to keep it and it also depends on if it is a random bitcoin that i receive or is it a mistake. if it is random and small i wouldn't even care to look for it but if it is by accident and a little big i would try to give it back to the real owner.

Well, I guess I'll give it back, I knew it was not right to me, so I'll give it back regardless of the amount. that person may be in dire need of the bitcoin, and I think, if it happened to me, I probably wanted the money I send the wrong back. so I would probably give it back, because it's possible that it happened to me.

to be honest , to earn more trust and to earn more fund really many will run away with that amount specially if it is over 10000 $ but to be honest stealing money will not last for long time .so return 80 % of the total and keep the 20 % as a fee after agreement  with the sender .

I agree, some people will probably keep the coins if they don't know who's that person that send the funds but if it somehow their relative I'm sure that's when their empathy will work. Most people are selective when it comes to having empathy.

Probably I would return it, but I can`t say that for sure. Now I`m ok with money, and I have coins and fiat. But lets say I`m in desperate need for money, I would think twice before I send it back. Maybe I would take some percent and give back the rest.
Its really hard to say why would I do, answer on this question depends from many things in my opinion. And like a human with a feelings, depending from a moment I think I`m capable for everything.
If something like this ever happen to me, I will tell you how i reacted. Until than I can just imagine situation, and in my mind everything is possible.

the honest thing to do would be returning bitcoin because it is not yours to keep.

but i think it doesn't matter what we all say here because when it comes to acting about it, then it would be so hard to receive about $1000 for free (by accident) and remain honest enough to give it back.

I would send back bigger amounts but low amounts are not worth finding the righteous person they came from. It is very hard announcing
oh wow, i doubt that i would send back even more than i got but i would most probably return it back, i hope i will never get any bitcoins on accident as it would be a trouble for me
I too would return it, however, I'd be honest that I would have liked some form a compensation for that bit of a trouble. I'm not asking much, but maybe around 5% of those coins? But of course, only if they'd want to.

First off someone sending 1 btc by mistake is highly improbable, but if it were to happen, I wouldn't bother sending it back.
I think I'd put the btc to better use than the person who sent it to you by mistake.
I would always first see from where the bitcoins came from, if its a big exchange who earns 100's of bitcoin then I will not return :P but if it is sent from someone who works hard and earned it, I will definitely return it instantly. Because I know how much it will pain to a hard worker on loosing some money.

If you found a random lost wallet on the street or in a public bus or something would you return it granted that you could see the owner's address in there? If you are a honest person with morals you know what the right thing to do is. I guess you could ask yourself the same question if you received a random Bitcoin transaction to your wallet that doesn't belong to you/wasn't intended for you and as you could see the sending address you could decide what the moral thing to do in that instance is.

Hi, having a bitcoin in my wallet unexpectedly, is really good. Who doesn't want bitcoins. I might even think that it is a blessing from the above. But what if this bitcoin was just sent to me by mistake? Should I return it? For me my answer is yes because here in my country , there is a law related to Quasi-contract and the law about it says that no-one should be unjustly enriched at the expenses of another. So it means if you receive money or good by mistake, you have the obligation to return it to the real receiver or real owner.

I would like to think that you are so kind since you will return the money to the owner but after reading that you will not return the whole amount of bitcoin because you will cut 15% for you sincerity, hahha I have changed my mind. Yes Wendigo, if I found a random lost wallet in a public place and I saw the person who lost it,  I would probable call his/her attention and talk to him regarding the lost wallet because my parents taught me so well and as what the saying says, Do unto others as you would want other do unto. But in the bitcoin world, it is entirely different since we are transacting anonimously so it will be hard for us to determine who is the real owner.

Yes it is given that that she sends it wrongly and it is her mistake that the bitcoins were sent into your wallet but  I dont think it is right and just to ask for a compensation from the owner just for you to return the bitcoins which is not supposed to be yours, it is like blackmailing him or her. I will negotiate with the sender and keep a cut. Maybe 10%, or 30%, up to 50%, then sent the rest back.
It is not right to keep them all, also not right that sender goes unpunished, since Bitcoin is a irreversible.

It would be pretty hard for somebody to inadvertently send you a bitcoin.

Why would it be hard for somebody to send someone a bitcoin? It happened a lot of times. If they are too rich and the are too careless when it comes to their transactions online or it happened when someone is so excited to send a bitcoin that is why they are not double checking it to see if it is the real bitcoin address where  they really want to send their bitcoins. How lucky for the wrong receiver and I feel sorry for the excited sender. hahaha

That's only a dream in my minds, for 1000BTC the owner will be careful about this because that's a huge amount and we won't be a careless people if they don't want to lose their amount. Just 1 BTC it's amazing for a randomly account or transaction.

"I accidentally sent them, may I have them back?"
Pfft. Impossible for you send me BTC by accident, especially with that large of an amount and considering I usually use vanity addresses. As if 1PandaExaY8XmCLSWbAw2prEjbYKgHY2g wasn't obvious enough.

It's your responsibility to double check, and it's your fault for not doing so. Therefore, your stupidity will give you an expensive lesson. By accidentally sending BTC to that address, you are completely giving up and transferring ownership of said bitcoins to PandaLion98, implicitly or otherwise, and it is at his sole discretion as to what he'll do with it (definitely not going back into your wallet). You have/had all the opportunities to make sure that your bitcoins be sent to your intended recipient, but you blatantly ignored them.

Moral lesson: Always triple check your destination address, especially with large transactions.

I'll be sending a link to this post to whoever messes up and accidentally send me their bitcoins.

Let me say true about this if ever I received some bitcoins randomly than surely I would like to keep it for me, I'll never send it to back to that address and will consider it as a gift from God.

Hahahaha actually these bitcoins are gift from the one who send these bitcoins to you randomly. But i think its depends on how many bitcoins you recieved, if you get a small amount than you want that money back to the person who sent these to you :P

Depends on how rich the person that received it in my opinion. For me, 1BTC is a lot.

I'm assuming that you're rich. In that case, you can send me some ;)

Then it'd be safe for us to assume that you are indeed rich and you probably have a lot of games into your Steam account.
1BTC is actually a lot for many people since there are a lot of people that doesn't have any special skill to offer and are having quite a hard time getting bitcoins.

I think that yes, because i am very honest with myself and i understand that it's not my money and better to return it. But many people will not return it anyway.

well honestly I will just take 0.1 btc cause I need it so desperately and I will send other back
well i guess that would still be kinda stealing because you would take the money from other people and that would definitely not be good in my opinion, i would most probably sell all the bitcoins

Simple question but hard to answer, but I think 90% or even more than 90% of us will not send it back. I myself will not send it back if I got it when I do not have enough money but I will send it back if I get it when I have some money.
So it depends on when I received the random btc. ;D

if I see the bitcoin which sent to my address and it is not mine, there is a two conditions whom I can do.

  • if I see the owner bitcoin, I will contact them. what they are really giving their bitcoins to me. I will return back if they are not really want to giving. I want everyone can trust me,and not want other people no trust to me.
  • if I can't see the owner bitcoin, I will waiting during a few month up to a one years. if there is an owner whose claiming their bitcoin own, I will ask their bitcoin address signature whom they using while sent their bitcoin to me. and if all the proof can they give to me, I will return back all their bitcoin

but otherwise if not there claiming, I will assume it is my bitcoin

Well probably not! The one who made a mistake will think twice next time when he try to send some coins. I would spent it very fast, depending from amount I received I would think is it enough to buy something, or to spend it on some party with friends on drinks and other stuff, or I would put all on red and try to make it double.
But that will never happen to me, I never found some money in my life. So I doubt that I will have more luck now with bitcoins.

If you have conscience. Then give it back. But if not, then claim it as your own. Because that's the fault of the sender. They can never locate who you are, where you are or what are you doing right now. The only thing they know about you is your BTC address. Just accept it and claim it as your own if you want.

Mostly people feel lucky when they get bitcoins from other address mistakenly. but i personally think you have to give it back to concerned person because if you send your money mistakenly to others than you will also not get back your bitcoins. :P So be honest with yourself and send this amount back, I know it is difficult but try to do that it will help you in future.

I said above mistake because making transaction of bitcoin is not a joke or time pass part, its very sensitive think to access wallet and make transaction. If you receive any amount by mistake its not quite possible but if happened then its a mistake of sender. So there will no mercy for mistake.

I think you'd have to return it for a number of reasons. Obviously being an honest person is one but also it's pretty easy to track addresses & spends. If it was a large amount of bitcoin I wouldn't want people trying to track me & link my addresses etc.

Title: Re: If you recieved random BTC, would you return it?

No. I don't see why would I do this, because I would think it's a donation from somebody. I've seen people randomly tipping money, I've seen a guy tipping 0.5BTC to a random user on PrimeDice. I wouldn't.

So I guess getting a tip of 10BTC randomly would bother you. First of all, why would you be scared or worried about it? What if the sum would be sent randomly to you, and after you send it back that guy tips it to someone else? You never know. It happened to me and I didn't get my sum back. It was only 0.005, but still. It's not your fault.

Title: Re: If you recieved random BTC, would you return it?
Post by: Fatanut on July 11, 2016, 01:02:40 PM
Probably not, knowing that BTC addresses are almost just random characters, no one would accidentally send you BTC. Someone wouldn't accidentally send you BTC because he accidentally changed a letter or two in the address. If I see a random amount going to my account, then I probably did something that made me earn that.

But if someone would contact me right after I received the bitcoins and say that he pasted the wrong address in the "recipient" part, then I might be in a good mood and send it back.

That's not an acceptable case. The only thing that's acceptable is if you have a scenario where you need the coins in emergency, that might be an excuse but you should return it to specific address once you can provide a certain money. It's like borrowing the funds that accidentally sent to you.

It would also be risky. For example, if the coins came from an exchange, the addresses are usually one-time use. Sending them back would pretty much mean you threw those bitcoins to the exchange owner's face. They'll appreciate it.

First I was thinking that yes I will return that as it was in my mind that it will be came from someone by mistake, but a few minutes ago an idea came to my mind that I will check the history of that bitcoin address from which I get the coins, and when I see that this type of transactions happened to a number of addresses then I will not return as it will mean that it will be the giveaway from that person.

That is exactly what I was thinking as well. Even if we keep our morals aside, like asking whether it is a good thing or a bad thing to return it, just thinking of what that person is feeling after mistakenly sending me coins is already somewhat painful for him. So, definitely, I would return it.

Everyone in the world is working just for money and if they get free money than how they will get back this money or bitcoins??  But i have believe that there are some  people that will return the bitcoins if they received by mistake but if the person want back that money :P
Very very true, we all are here and talking to earn money and bitcoins and when we get it for free why will we return it ? really it will have no convincing reasons other than karma related things. I think only people to return would be the ones who are pressurized for returning it.
But I have saw a lot of people who are more honest and more loyal with the orders of their God and I think if those people recieved some bitcoins randomly or by mistake they will return it with not taking  any moment.

To be honest its hard to believe that anyone will return it as its really difficult to find those honest people nowadays and chance are very less then anyone will return it.

yeah in today world it is really very hard to find some people honest like tat which you mentioned, I don't say that people like that are not available ( the world is existed because of people like those) But i say that their amount is lesser and we cannot say for any person that he is more honest,

By the way he is right if people like those get some bitcoins randomly or by mistake they will return.

I will feel like keeping it but I know I will definitely return it, because I will feel worse keeping it.

It does not matter if the owner is a good man or a devil, what matters is that the money is not mine.

Yeah its good to return it and if are capable and honest then we can earn much more in future by putting our own efforts and it would be an satisfactory felling to earn it with honesty.

This is a bit difficult because if i received random BTC with huge amount i would tempted to save it in my bitcoin wallet but may be if someone else asking for refunds i guess I would consider it but if not i would keep those bitcoin as random reward...

If i remember correctly, i received btc that was sent by error and/or sent but there were some misinformations so deals fell off, so i returned funds
in all cases. The biggest was over 1 btc, second was ~0.25 btc and so on. I would do the same every time, but it would be nice if i atleast get a "thank you" afterwards.

For someone like me that has a small BTC wallet and is trying to make as much BTC as possible before its too late due price going too high, it would be hard to return it, but I would feel bad to keep it too.

i dont think so ,, if any one was that good and return it to its owner it will be only after investing it and making self profits

Come on.  You can't think ouside of your own tiny box believing that everyone in the world would act as you would.  This is simply not true.  Readers Digest did a "lost wallet" test to check the honesty of people around the world.  Of the 192 wallets "lost"  90 were returned.  This actually requires some detective work and still 47% were returned.

Interesting results.  Mumbai was a big surprise for me.
