I am using multibit and blockchain wallet at a moment, as I think both of them are very safe and secure with good security measures and your bitcoins are surely safe in it.

Blockchain wallet is the best and most trusted. It is really easy and simple to use, at the same time it is safe and secured as well. I would recommend blockchain wallets only as I am using the same from last 2 years and the experience is good.

Yeah even I am using the same since I am into bitcoin, and to be honest I have never found any issue with it when it comes to safety, and for a newbie its a best to start with.

I definitely agree that Blockchain.info is the best online wallet at the moment. It's pretty easy to use as a first start in bitcoins.

What I particularly like about Blockchain is that you can set the transaction cost yourself. If you don't need a transaction to settle immediately you can reduce the transaction cost and just wait 1h for the transaction to be confirmed.

I guess I'll be the first one to issue the usual warning to stay off online wallets.
Controlling your private keys is the most important part of a wallet's security.

Simple wallets like Electrum or Mycelium for mobile are my two favorites.

I agree with cold storage as well. We can never be too sure where our bitcoins will just in case an error comes up on online wallets. Usually the trend is most newbies are using online wallets for fast and ease of use..but those who are a bit advanced or who are using bitcoins in business and such use a cold wallet.

Multibit gets my vote :) Personally, I don't store any digital currency (bitcoin or otherwise) online unless I am
getting ready to trade.

it depends on what you want to use it for. among web wallets blockchain.info is best for those who have a basic knowledge about bitcoin and want to have access to their private keys but for an absolute beginner who wants to buy bitcoin too i think coinbase is a much better choice. and both of these are only good to be used ans a hot wallet and with small amounts not for storing bitcoin, for that you should use cold storage.

Multibit gets my vote :) Personally, I don't store any digital currency (bitcoin or otherwise) online unless I am
getting ready to trade.

ever since multibit developers thought it is a good idea to ask for an additional fee from users who use their wallet, they lost my vote. and it doesn't matter now that they changed things back, the damage is done.

Well it depends on the amount you are going to hold. If you have a small amount coinbase or blockchain wallet will do fine. If you are going to hold a large amount then a hardware wallet would be much better. There are alot of hardware wallets just choose the one that is right for you.

Hey, this brings back some memories when I started out with Bitcoin..... We did not have a lot to choose from, but it was still a daunting decision to make. Now it's much worst with all the options out

there, so I can see why sites like this will help newbies to choose. If we had Trezor back then, I think I would have gone for that from the start, but you know how they say you have to kiss a lot of frogs

before you find the prince.  ::) Thanks for this info OP.  ;)

I'm currently using blockchain.info web wallet because i feel more comfortable and secured than using coins.ph because in coins.ph a lot of users are complaining about it especially those gamblers because they account got deactivated. So even i'm not doing some gamble i transfered my coins to blockchain because it's the best and most popular wallet :).

Yes. I definitely agree to that. It all depends on the amount of bitcoin you are keeping. For beginners, I would suggest those online wallets like coinbase or blockchain wallet but if you are earning or keeping large amount of bitcoin, then you should opt for hardware and/or offline wallets. Thanks for the additional information. :)

Simple wallets like Electrum or Mycelium for mobile are my two favorites.

Mycelium is excellent, it was because of OpenBazaar i downloaded Mycelium to my Android phone, really love this app.

Also you have to think about how much, i would not keep more than a few Bitcoins on my phone, i keep most in cold storage.

EG: download Bitcoin desktop wallet,  then move that to a usb, making several back ups, then removing it from my computer.

As long as you are using the wallet most suggested by noobs which is blockchain.info is you are relying on a third party to hold your bitcoins and you are not in charge of your bitcoins really. Even this new wallet of them is HD and has a lot of security features you still are relying on third party to hold and to make bitcoin transactions for you. This is highly inconvenient because their website can go offline anytime, can be attacked via DDOS making you lose some money as you maybe wanting to spend some of your coins for a very nice offer in that very same moment the site is down.

Perfect for everyday usage and for storing coins is Electrum, if you install it in a clean PC (Linux OS recommended for higher security) the private keys are stored in your PC and only you are responsible if something bad happens (you let your guard down when taking care of your PC security).
So far I have not heard a single story of Electrum being hacked even from the Windows environment.

If you will leave your coins in your wallet sitting for years then absolutely your best bet is a hardware wallet like Trezor or Ledger Nano, both malware proofs so your coins are safe there.

This has got to be the biggest Blockchain shill cess pool I have ever seen on this forum - someone note these account names please. OP That wallet is literally one of the most hacked options out there, consider bread wallet if you want free and hold a small amount of BTC - Trezor for HD wallet more secure offline.

I personally like light wallets such as Multibits - I would never leave some BTC in exchanges (see the fiasco that is happening with the Yobit exchange) or I would not leave BTC in an online wallet either; anything outside my control is seen as potentially hackeable.

Xapo has recently started to get on the problematic KYC band, and as such they are randomly blocking some users, suddenly, who are surprised they can't get access to their BTC all of a sudden. Don't trust outside servers is my motto.

An important thing I haven't seen much mention of, is the security of your own PC. Historically Windows is the most insecure, but it's difficult to dump everything you know. Your online habits affect this a lot. Do you cruise porn sites? Do you download music or movies? Do you use Edge or Internet Explorer?  The more bitcoin you acquire, the more important these questions become.

Any online wallet is convenient, but you are at the mercy of persons unknown. If they go down, your bitcoin can disappear. Multibit is good, but at the time I quit using it, it did not easily support proxy servers. If you have several PCs behind a firewall this could be a problem. Electrum is good because you can easily restore your wallet from phrases that you should write down before your PC goes belly up. Cold storage is the best for longtime use. If you are in the USA, Coinbase's online wallet is good, because they are making big efforts to comply with money laws. Conversely, you give up some privacy to use it.

How long do you keep a computer? If your PC suddenly refuses to boot up, can you recover important files from it? If you take it to any PC shop, do you know that they won't find/steal your private keys?

Phone wallets are very convenient to spend BTC with, make sure you can keep your BTC if the phone is lost or stolen.

all the bitcoin wallets can be good. but each of them are good for a different purpose. for example a web wallet like blockchain.info is good but it is not the most secure. if you are ever looking for the safest wallet you should only choose a wallet that is offline, download from a legit place and then install on an always offline system and you have the best wallet.

There a lot of wallet to choose: first one is web wallet like xapo, coins.ph(Philippines)blockchain and coinbase and there are also other wallet aside from that like mobile, desktop and hardware wallets. So it's very hard to advise what bitcoin wallet is the best because all of us are always have our own favorite type of wallet. So if you want to choose what's kind of wallet you like and also learn about those kind of wallet you can read some informations from this site: https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet :).

I didn't heard about that site, i don't think it's will be easy for an average person to trust that site because it's not popular like blockchain or even coinbase. But it's better if you do some research about that site and also find some feedbacks from other people who are using that site if that is a trusted or not :).

There are four main types of wallets

  • Desktop/Software Wallet is one that you install on your own computer or mobile device. You are in complete control over the security of your coins, but they can sometimes be tricky to install and maintain.
  • Hardware Wallet is like movable thing where you can store your own bitcoin and carry anywhere build with strong security.
  • Smartphone/App Wallets are also great tool to get control over your web wallet with apps. Some of actual just apps are also can be used to send, receive or store bitcoins securely.
  • Web Wallet or hosted wallet is one that is hosted by a third party. They are often much easier to use, but you have to trust the provider to maintain high levels of security to protect your coins.
Every wallet has own existence and importance.

A “Bitcoin wallet” is basically the Bitcoin equivalent of a bank account. It allows you to receive bitcoins, store them, and then send them to others.

Personally, I used Electrum for BTC. It is a compact installation and does not need to download the blockchain (as with bitcoin is huge now after many years of transactions  ::) ). It connects through the blockchain via remote connection to a blockchain explorer. In my experiences, its very easy and very quick to use. And as long as you secure your wallet code, which is a string of words unique to your wallet, it is very forgiving, should you forget your encryption key, all you have to do is create a "new" wallet using your original wallet code and you have your wallet back sans encryption code. That is why it is extremely important to secure your code, as anyone with it can do the same thing.   :'(

However, I do use other wallets besides Electrum. I have a xapo wallet, however, in my experiences is only really good for things like faucets and gambling where they offer direct pay and/or bonues for using a xapo wallet. There is multiple layers of passwords and confirmations that can sometimes make it a hassle to access your coin quickly. I usually end up flushing my xapo wallet into my electrum wallet every few weeks so that I have better access to my coin.

As bitcoin has its own protocol, so it just need to be with internet to access wallet for bitcoins.

Already there are mainly four types of wallets are present as

1) App wallet
2) Desktop wallet
3) Hardware wallet
4) Web wallet

Its up to user to choose most convenient wallet for there needs.
And also have to take all precautions and security majors for wallet whichever you choose.

Addition level of security can enhance wallet sustainability.

It's really a good idea to keep users of Bitcoin informed of the best Bitcoin wallets.
I propose Xapo, which is a good wallet that has no transaction fees, but lacks a bit of security, but that does not have good security, because the Bitcoin wallet user has no access to private keys.

What Bitcoin wallets are best to use?

That depends on the user. You could make a flow diagram for this decision.

Do you trust your mobile phone?   (No -> no mobile wallet)
Do you want to pay for your wallet?  (No -> no hardware wallet)
Do you want privacy? (Yes -> no mobile wallet, no web wallet)
Are you tech savy? (No -> use a simple wallet)
Does your computer crash every year/month/week? (Yes -> dont use desktop wallet)
Did your phone break due to accidents (water, drop) in the past? (Yes -> don use mobile wallet)

It should be noted that it should be treated like a hot wallet, you don't want to keep all your BTC in a service like this.  Although I will agree they are one of the most popular wallets, and have a good history.  But one bad event could change that.  I think you would be much better off with hardware wallet/paper wallet/etc if storing a decent amount.

The only online wallet that is a little different I can think of is Coinbase.  They hold a insurance policy ( https://support.coinbase.com/customer/portal/articles/1662379-how-is-coinbase-insured- ).   Most online hot wallets do not have this, still would be careful storing large quantity of coins.

I think there is no bitcoin wallet guaranteed 100% safe and will not deceive us. In my view all of wallet risky scam, if you want 100% safe create your own wallet to make your own network: D

I think there is no bitcoin wallet guaranteed 100% safe and will not deceive us. In my view all of wallet risky scam, if you want 100% safe create your own wallet to make your own network: D

I think the problem from bitcoin core is malware dude, so thats not 100% right for offline wallet. Bitcoin core is good but I do not like when it takes up a large enough memory. This time alone has reached 65 GB :(

I'll suggest blockchain.info because of its security and user friendly interface. Add on 2fa verification for more security of your funds specially in big amounts. I didn't encounter any problems on blockchain. So I'll recommend it to those newbie or starters in Bitcoin world.

There are some good 2fa option's aswell.   Cell phones scare me some as social engineering can happen and numbers get transferred to "bad guys".  In past month or so been a few big youtube people who have been hit by this.  So we are not big target's like them... but still can happen.

One I like is Yubikey which I did a hand's on with for blockchain.info https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1353231.0 .   It is a physical token that you have to press a button on.  So you have have access to the usb stick, and also physically press the button it can not be activated via software.  Which makes it where it can't be pressed remote which is good.

So yes 2fa is great idea.  But still a hot wallet so don't store a ton of coins there.

it is weird to say bitcoin core wallet for offline storage, but i guess if you want it IS possible. because you don't need to connect to internet with it so there is no blockchain (70+GB) download.
but that would only be used for creating a bitcoin address to dump bitcoin in, in that case there are simpler ways of doing this for offline storage.

all bitcoin wallets are good as long as you are downloading them from the official sites/links and be careful not to get the wrong tampered with wallet.

also you have to choose the wallet based on your needs so there isn't only one good wallet for everyone.

Other day the wallet wanted to charge me over 2 mBTC as transaction fee...

You can easily adjust the transaction fee in Electrum under Tools/Preferences/Transactions (I'm using Electrum on Linux, Electrum version for other OSs might have a slightly different path).

yeah I agree with you, every wallet was good. But most of the errors committed by our own. For example, yesterday I downloaded an ebook on this forum (but the thread was already deleted) turns me fetching the coin stealer. That where I copied every bitcoin address, and when I paste the address has changed. LOL

If you don't have plans to trade altcions as well, yo9u may consider just the wallets of an exchange site.
I have been using yobit for quite awhile and the rest of the exchange sites just so i need not to install wallet programs on my hard drive. it saves harddrive space. :)

My friends i think you need a personal wallet that you have full authority over the private key of the wallet. Due to worry about if you save money in the wallet exchanger will have problems if the exchanger is being affected by the problem eg hacking, DDOS, or scam. With that then there will be difficulties to attract your coin or even lose them. I have seen some experts say never save your big money in the wallet exchanger because it is too risky. Thank you

My bitcoin wallet that Im using now is blockchain.
I will give it to block chain cos of the flexibility and security over your account and also the real time notifiactions on anything going on in the account also at the same time gives you schedule of your contributing wallet address. This give a form of control from your own point and its available to trade in my country compared there's with restriction to some specific countries. However, block chain does not give notifications for deposit in your accounts you have to log in to see unlike coinbase... My 2cents...

the wallet xapo is good option too, there no fee to transfer or accept bitcoin
but at xapo is no private key. I agree with you do not put you all btc in one wallet to avoid losing all of btc

I think you mean is not online wallet. because I think of online wallet services such as blockchain.info was nice and could be considered. In blockchain.info we have full control on bitcoin and wallet with the "private key". Perhaps you mean is the online wallet provided by exchangers, because as I said above you do not have full control of the wallet in the exchanger. So it makes it risky to store large amounts of BTC in there :)

You can download and install desktop wallets and use them easily. The best ones are Electrum and MultiBit. The sites (electrum.org and multibit.org) have all the instructions on how to download, install, and use them.

May i recommend that you have more than one wallet unless you are going to use a paper wallet.  The reason I suggest this, is that in my opinion it is safer.  it makes it easier to transfer bitcoin funds from one place to another, etc.  This is just my opinion though.

Always activate 2 factor authentication to be secure, otherwise it just too easy to hack.

Blockchain.info is very anonymous and not secure. If someone has access to your email adress and your password he can just send all your coins to his own wallet.

Also bitcoin core is also good if your computer is completely secured no virus or anything suspicious software in your computer.

Mycelium was my first wallet when i got to bitcoin, a few months ago. Recently i switched to breadwallet (because iPhone). Breadwallet is more girly. Way simpler and i kinda love it that way. In the end, it really makes no difference, as long as i have those 12 words safe, right?

Unfortunately I would say. Because if you have your coins stored on blockchain you are relying on third party (in this case blockchain s.a luxembourg) to hold your coins and in order to use them you need to access the blockchain.info website. I can understand that newbies will go directly to these kind of wallets but my advice is to  use Electrum, it can hold up to 2000 bitcoin addresses and its very easy as you can just install it on your desktop (must be a clean OS, preferably Linux OS) and you can do whatever you like with your coins since you are not relying on third party to hold the coins for you but you are holding the coins yourself.
It just needs to take the first step to migrate to a desktop wallet and trust me you will never look back and totally forget about blockchain and alike wallets.

Of course a desktop wallet is much better than any online wallet in terms of security. But if you think about accessibility an online wallet is just much easier to use. Especially if you are new to bitcoins. As a beginner I assume you don't have more 100 USD to play around. If of course you start into bitcoins directly with <1+ BTC go directly for a desktop wallet.

Well there is still alternative if you are using electrum and you already have those seeds in notepad just archive it in rar file with password protected upload in dropbox as one of the safeplace that you will need in the future..  also you can use burna cd for all your password and accounts..
Its not te problem to backup our wallet in pc wallet.. online wallets are risky for me because i already experience it in coinbase also in xapo..

Personally also using Multibit HD to store my funds since it does not need to sync the entire Bitcoin chain, user-friendly and works like a charm! ;D

2. For advanced users to have an insight on what other wallets have to offer in general and be able to make a decision whether they want to transfer or not

See the whole list here:

The most definitive post on Bitcoin Wallets (http://www.bitcoineverything.net/the-most-definitive-post-on-bitcoin-wallets/)

We have reviewed a number of Bitcoin wallets from our experience are best to use. This is based solely on our opinion and we also welcome the opinions of others. Anyone can post suggestions and questions. We are here to answer.
I use Coinbase at the moment. It is just like every other wallet and it also pays your transaction fees. Other than that, Coinbase is just like all other wallets.

I personally the best online wallet is blockchain.info
and for mobile wallet is mycellium.
this is best wallet for me to use at the moment.

I also like blockchain.info very much. blog chain gives some features which other web wallet don't give. like access to private keys, Custom sending option. signing message etc. these are the best feature blockchain have..
xapo, spectrocoin.com don't have these features.

I would recommend using an offline wallet as you have access to the private key, using an online wallet means you may not have full access. I use mycelium wallet. If you're planning on  using an online wallet, I would recommend xapo simply because you don't pay any fees.

yes that is  a good idea, blockchain.info is really trusted but i think it depend on the interest of the person that what kind of wallet is convenient for him. but for me my personal view is that offline wallet will be more safe and good.

dude thats an exchange site. Its advisable to store btc in a wallet that you have control on your private key. Im only using local exchange site if i were about to cashout and not storing my earnings in exchange site eventhough they are trusted still not advisable to store in a wallet that you have no control on your private key.

I would say use a wallet that is based on security.  I would look at cold storage like a paper wallet, they will always remain king as they are free and easy to make.  Just have to make sure you create on a machine not compromised and store safely.  Also you can use hardware wallet's some like Trezor make bitcoin storage very easy and very secure to the point you should not be hacked as long as you store seed's safely.

But online web wallets have a place just to me I don't see it being a main wallet.  They are good for daily spending not long term in my eye's.

True that I also agree with you, as long as my money is safe and secure fee charged was not a problem, than we are looking for a free service, but with a lower security quality. I think that bitcoin have small fee, and you will not be poor due to pay that fee. hehe

It is good that you are using a wallet based in your country because you can somehow trust them or maybe they more accessible when it comes to paying your bills but we should always take into consideration the security the wallet service gives. If the wallet seems to be secure and at the same time convenient for you, then that wallet could be a good choice. :)

The best wallet is the wallet that you have the private key of your bitcoin address or at least the seed/passphrase of your wallet, all others are not 100% safe because if you don't control your bitcoin then the chances that someone else if playing with them are not low. So I would go with paper wallet the old method is gold method.

Breadwallet is a great wallet for your phone.  You have to have a lock code on your phone in order to use it, for added security or it won't open.  I like Blockchain however the fact that it is an online wallet means that I wouldn't use it to hold large amounts.  I reserve that for my cold wallet :)

That is definitely a good point but for beginners, you can still start with online wallets because they are still safe. When you go further and you keep bigger funds, you should opt for offline or paper wallets. It is also recommended to use various Bitcoin wallets so that if in case something wrong happened in your wallet you, do not lose all your Bitcoins. :)

I assume you're talking about blockchain.info right? If so, I really hope you don't store all your coins there because it's a third party having control over it.

I personally only use bitcoin core as it allows me to run a full node from time to time. I say from time to time because it's quite heavy for my computer to keep the client open all day.

Most of the countries don;t have a registered wallet like in philippines the coins.ph.

If people want a main wallet and a hot wallet then they should chose an offline wallet such as hardware wallet or electrum.

And a hot wallet for personal/daily use such as Mycelium, again hardware wallets are good too, and/or web wallets for small amounts.

Supposedly, they don't have any way of knowing or accessing your private keys. Supposedly this has been verified somehow, but I am hazy on the details. In any case, the consensus is that with blockchain.info, you do not control the software that controls your private keys (not local to your machine) -- so in theory, there are attack vectors that could empty your wallet whether or not Blockchain.info had control over your keys. I believe they do not have control over your keys. But the implementation is susceptible to attack.

The Bitfinex hack is another reminder to avoid giving control over your bitcoins up to custodians. You can secure your own PC better than they can secure hundreds of thousands of bitcoins -- they have a target on their back. They have many, many employees. People have tried for years, and continue to try to crack their security setup. That's just a fact of being an exchange / 3rd party wallet provider.

Better to stick with a solid desktop wallet, like Bitcoin Core.

Any mobile wallet is also generally less secure. And when you download apps to your phone, what kind of verification are you doing? Are you making sure that you are receiving the correct binary, signed by the original author? Or do you just download it from the app store and don't ask any questions?

I would be careful not to keep much stored on a mobile phone wallet either.

Mainly choosing a wallet mainly depends on how many bitcoins you are going to be storing in it and how often you need them. If you are storing them for the time when the value increases then use cold storage like paper wallets. If you are using bitcoins frequently for buying things then use online wallets but do not store too much bitcoins in there as there is a chance of losing them.

This is a very dangerous way of thinking. It doesn't matter how safe or well known a certain site as blockchain.info or an exchange might be.

Nothing saves you from high level employees or hackers ripping the company and run with huge loads of coins. Bitfinex is a good example of that.

That's why you should store the far majority of your coins in offline storage for your own safety. Better safe than sorry.

Isn't there a risk that your hardware wallet starts to malfunction at some point and you'll lose the Bitcoins stored in it?
I'm a bit paranoid about that.
And do you think CryoBit cards are a safe option too?

Seems that many people in this thread believe this. The interface is nice -- but that's all it is. You may control your keys, but you don't control the software that generates and spends with them. They are vulnerable to certain kinds of JS/script attacks. I would recommend using a desktop wallet -- even a lite wallet like Electrum is much safer than using Blockchain.info.

I guess I'll be the first one to issue the usual warning to stay off online wallets.
Controlling your private keys is the most important part of a wallet's security.

Simple wallets like Electrum or Mycelium for mobile are my two favorites.

Think so too! I am using the same ones!

This thread is a spam magnet, so i'm posting in it  :P. Just make a poll for god's sake.

I personally would recommend a hardware wallet, like a Ledger or a Trezor. Never use an online wallet. Ever.

Isn't there a risk that your hardware wallet starts to malfunction at some point and you'll lose the Bitcoins stored in it?
I'm a bit paranoid about that.
And do you think CryoBit cards are a safe option too?
Hardware wallet can be Malfunction or can be corrupt thats why its advisable that you always backup you wallet and the private key of your bitcoin address so that if it will happen you can be install it to other wallet while you are fixing your hardware wallet..

In my opinion i will stay at electrum because i am still not halving any issue. i want to use  bitcoin core but the problem it can eat my whole drive..

When did you last try QT/Core? They've made some fantastic improvements over the past few releases that have drastically improved syncing time and reduced resource requirements. My node/wallet synced in several hours last time around, rather than over a day a couple years ago. With pruning, you can also lower your storage requirements. You can also throttle upload bandwidth if that's an issue. I suggest trying it out again! Electrum is cool, but there's nothing like the security of running your own full node.

When it comes to security and stability, I would got with Bitcoin core but it requires a lot of space and memory though. When it comes to speed, Iw ould go with Electrum. It is simple and has low resource usage. :)

Personally I like blockchain.info but the idea of using a browser wallet is just full of security flaws as well as minor troubles "Like the recent downtime" and mostly people don't keep the private codes as well.. I been using Armory for few months and it was a good experience 'although a little complicated in the beginning'.

For me, each type of wallets have their advantage and disadvantage and choosing a wallet service depends on how a wallet is more convenient to you. However, I would still suggest to use more than one wallet so you do not loose your funds all together, just in case.  ;)

I found blockchain info a simple to use wallet with a nice amount of features. It is pretty quick too and I can set custom fee on transactions. For advanced users, I recommend Bitcoin core, though. With bitcoind, it has an infinite amount of possible features thanks to the custom development possibilities.

Any of desktop wallet is good for staking as well as storage of Bitcoin. Use of qt client give good security. But should have to take precautions as back up of .DAT file, Back up of wallet address with private Key etc.

this security majors can give more freedom and accessibility to user while using desktop qt client. And always keep your wallet encrypted.

Staking? Bitcoin isn't a POS coin in case you didn't know it already.

Also, there are different wallets out there. Most people prefer to use a light weight wallet that doesn't require you to download the entire blockchain like you do with Core.

That's the worse suggestion any Sr.Member can make. Blockchain.info is an online wallet and you are keeping your coins in some website which a third party (the owners of the website control that wallet). Even if they say they do everything inside your browser and they don't keep your password its better to keep your coins in cold storage or hardware wallets. By keeping your coins in a hardware wallet you remove the chance that your coins get stolen.

Conclusion is never keep your coins in an online wallet. Buy a cheap hardware wallet here www.ledger.com (not using my referral link) and stop once and for all to worry about the security of your coins.

I'm afraid of using Coinbase, since they are regulated I've read of them closing customers accounts due to suspicion of them doing something bad, and the people saying they are innocent. Why take that chance. Especially since they are monitoring your transactions.

The problem with these services is that they should never be used as a tool to store coins. And definitely not for the long term.

You at all times should be aware of the dangers of having someone else as the party that controls your coins.

That's why I never use online wallet services to store my coins. Not even for a few satoshis.

Even Electrum and Bitcoin Core are online wallets but they have a difference with other online wallets. The private keys of your addresses never leave your PC and if you install them in a safe PC at first and add a really strong password 13 characters , rest assured they are as good as hardware wallets which offer the user ultimate security for their coins.

Users should stay away from wallets like blockchain.info, xapo, coinbase as they are not really secure. It is someone else who is managing your bitcoins for you.

blockchain.info is a web wallet so it is not the best in any way. but among the online web wallets i think it is one of the best.

you should start using another wallet if you have more than 0.1 bitcoin and move to a cold storage if it is 0.5+ bitcoin. Electrum is a good choice for both.

I'm not quite sure if you're asking what I think you're asking. You don't need a how-to for choosing, just go to https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet and pick one of your preference. If you're asking on what to choose, I'd recommend electrum.

I would also prefer using an offline wallet like electrum over online wallets as they give the user full control of their private keys.
While using online wallets, the private keys are shared with them and thereby there is a risk that they might get misused by hackers or the site might crash suddenly.
Online wallet like coinbase are worst as they don't even provide the private keys of their addresses.

Also electrum has 2fa also that you can back your private key but the real address can't.. the problem is you can not sign message if you choose 2fa this is one of the problem in electrum.. unlike a normal wallet in electrum that you can make sign message.

Before you decide which wallet to use you need to know what you are doing with your wallet.  If you goal is to amass crypto and hold it long term then a heavy/secure wallet might be more suitable since it will be accessed rarely.  If your goal is to use it frequently for day to day online purchases then a lightweight wallet might be more reasonable - sacrificing some security for convenience (since time is money for most).

For security I recommend using a paper wallet - one where you can print out the keys and save them offline.  Personally I use an Armory offline X of Y wallet where I need to retrieve X number of pages stashed around the world to rebuild my wallet.  I cold have my house burn down and still easily rebuild my wallet within hours.

coinbase is a good place to purchase bitcoin not to hold bitcoin in other words it is terrible as a bitcoin wallet because it is making things centralized and you have zero control over your private keys and as a result your money.

There are many things to think about when choosing a wallet. There are online wallets, mobile wallets, software wallets and a few others.  I prefer a software wallet for the house

It is true, if you want to hold your bitcoin for long term then you can go with hardware or software wallet like, desktop wallet, electrum, where you have full control over your wallet with private keys, online wallet is good for doing trading but not for holding bitcoins for long term, but i am using coinbase and i used it for trading purpose only.

Keep in mind that there is a fee every time that you move your BTC from one wallet address to another.

I chose Electrum and it needs a password each time in the version that I picked, but that is nothing compared to some of the others that require that 12 words passphrase or even the pvt key.

I'm very new to Bitcoin of course I'd heard of it but never before thought to use them.
Now though I'd like to pay  for 2 or 3 things I purchase monthly online with Bitcoin so started searching
for info. When I started a couple of days ago Green Address and Mycelium were names that popped up
frequently but to my surprise Mycelium has only been mentioned a few times and Green Address was mentioned
once in the whole 12 pages and that was on page 10.
These were the two I was thinking of using until I read this thread, I'm not going to be storing coins in a wallet
like I said it's purely to pay for online purchases 3 times a month so thought one of these wallets would be fine.
I did install Armory and the Bitcoin base but they took up 169g of my hardrive and I thought that was over kill
for want I'm going to use a wallet for so I uninstalled and I will settle for a wallet on my phone
but now I'm back to square one in choices  :-\

the obvious thing is that using online wallets is not safe. From desktop wallets i prefere Multibit.. just because i use him from years without problems, but as i know it will be better to use Electrum.

Exactly, i prefer to use offline wallet than online wallet, but it's ok for storing spendable amount in online wallet due to it's simplicity.

I saw a lot people recommending blockchain.info, coinbase, and localbitcoin wallet, I suggest to all newbie to try Bitcoin Core or Election to experience what is difference between offline and online wallet.
Yes because blockchain.info is one of the most oldest and safest bitcoin wallet nowadays and  it will more secured now that you can sign a message to provide your identity of the address here in bitcointalk.org i love using it is easy to use and it is not hard to use anyway :)
not the safest, what if the site is offline??
if you want to storing high amount of your bitcoin i don't recommend to storing it on online wallet, desktop or hardwallet is  more safe than online wallet.

Yeah online wallet isn't the best decisions when having a lot of BTC-you'd better go for a paper wallet which is one of the best wallets eithe way

I also have a few online wallets on exchanges.  Some of the coins that I trade are on very few exchanges and there are other coins that are on a different small set of exchanges.

Plus, online wallets, especially those on exchanges have minimum transfer amounts that you may drop below if you are actively trading and lose a little.

i don't recommend people to storing their bitcoin on wallet that they can't controll the private key. wallets like coinbase or xapo can froze your money anytime if you do something against their rules like gambling. However if only for storing low amount or spendable amount i think it's not problem, just don't storing high amount or more than that you can afford to lose.

This is my first time to heard that wallet. but according to the site just search in google and try to check their site looks like they are accepting almost 45 altcoin in their wallet including bitcoin..
For me its still not safe to use as wallet..

I dont think it is the best wallet to use, dont save your bitcoin in exchanges its not safe

Though online wallets are not as safe as offline wallets but they are better for a beginner and they are user friendly, and a new user wont understand the things about a offline wallet at all so it would be good for them to use a online wallet like blockchain.

I found coin.space for WP 10 and it was easy to use, but, like I said, too many wallets and that means too many TX fees and I even know of people that have forgotten about an online wallet with a few coins in it.

Ever since I venture into Bitcoin, I have only used online wallets and specifically blockchain.info and I havent had any issue with the platform to date aside one day they were having down time. Even though I know its not totally safe like paper wallet but I am still looking for paper wallet for BTC, the one I have is for ETH as I have control over the key... So for beginners, online wallet is cool and for those that are transactions fee free is better...

I have a recommended wallet for every device :
laptop/PC: bitcoin core( if you love btc and want to support it) otherwise electrum/multibit is nice
iphone iOS: copay is probably the best on this.
Android: everyone loves mycelium.
windows phone: copay.

I use a Ledger wallet, soon to be upgrades to a Trezor 2.0 when it comes out. It's super-safe and very convenient to use.

If you're too poor to afford $15 to protect your bitcoin, use Electrum. But honestly, you don't need a wallet at all if you don't have $15 xD

i only use wallet from few market exchange, blockchain, and mycelium, and i think its a best bitcoin wallet to use because for bitcoin wallet itself is design to be a secure and safe wallet that will ready for member to use.
