Title: Do you use multiple Bitcoin Wallets to store your Bitcoins?
Post by: itsmarkoc on June 29, 2016, 07:52:57 PM
Hey guys,

I was wondering if you keep all your bitcoins in one wallet, or do you use multiple providers/accounts?

I am currently using 3 different wallets, it kinda feels safer not to store everything in once place...

Thoughts?

MC  :)

I use MultiBit HD and that seems to use a lot of different wallets for incoming and outcoming transactions. So, a collection of wallets.

I think that is a pretty cool feature.

oh cool! So can you have a breadwallet and a ledger wallet within a MultiBit? Or just different MultiBit Wallets?

I mostly use blockchain.info for every day use but recently started using electrum to store large sum of finds as i find it more safer because it is software based rather than web or database based. I also have 50% of my total bitcoin in different exchangers. Spreading all bitcoin is safer option against possible scam or shutdown.

I think it's just a collection of wallets. It's uses a deterministic wallet (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Deterministic_wallet). I have no idea what it means though... :P

Not really. My mycelium wallet is tied to my ledger wallet, do it's basically a watch-only until I plug my ledger in. The only wallets I use are the stock ledger wallets and The mycelium wallet, as above stated.

Its definitely a benefit the accounts to be free and also for big Bitcoin owners probably better to save them on different Bitcoin wallets.

I think its important to use more than one wallet, in my case i use one cold wallet (a paper wallet) for long time storage. A Multibit as normal wallet, and a mobile wallet for small amounts.

I using and different 4 wallets and why am i using some wallet at the same time? because to split all of my bitcoin, and decrease all of the risks will I get from this? it's my responsibility to protect my BTC from the thief or scammers. you can try my way. :D

I use only electrum and it has about 50 wallet addresses, so far its a pretty safe wallet, been using it for over 2 years on Linux not a single problem so far. Unless you want to have a lot of anonymity (if you know what you are doing) you can have as much wallets as you can as they cannot be linked to a single person that easily if you use different wallets.
For me I feel pretty safe with Electrum. Time has told me so :)

I'm only using blockchain until now but have some address in my wallet. maybe I was not too protect my wallet, with using 2FA I think it was more than enough. because in my opinion blockchain is the best wallet for me because for me it's always updating with their system in I'm very comfortable with this.

Are you talking about online wallets?I use coinbase only to send and receive bitcoins i have a blockchain account too but i prefer coinbase.
For storage i have a hard wallet (ledger) i don't trust enough the online wallets to keep my bitcoins.

While I wouldn't store all my eggs in one basket, I also wouldn't be saying how much less where they are stored - you'll forget you posted in this thread, but a hacker will come along and use that information (should you have enough BitCoins that they feel like taking) and you won't even know how they did it.

Lol yeah I also think using one wallet is enough. if you want to secure you just add some authentication. and using one wallet simpler and easier

It's always a good idea to use multiple addresses. Some people would even advice not to use the same address twice. I think that's overkill. But if you don't want to be tracked, try changing your active addresses every week or two.

This is what my Bitcoin wallets usage currently looks like.

# 3 wallets where I have all my cold wallet coins in.
# 2 spending/receiving wallets for my daily transactions.
# 1 wallet without a password containing over 0.10 BTC to see if my pc is hacked or infected with a virus.

All this done with the client Bitcoin Core.

I use several wallets but I am not going to give specifics.  It is always a good idea to take a wise approach while managing one's money.  Divide it up into savings, spending, investment....etc.  One wouldn't shove their whole bankroll into their pocket when they go out to the market for bread and milk, so one shouldn't keep his entire bankroll in a wallet designed for routine purchases.  It's just wise to diversify one's holdings under a tiered security protocol.

One wouldn't want to flash a wad of "Benjies" while buying a can of wine in the ghetto would they?

Diverse wallets in different sites is the best way to protect your bitcoin from being hacked or to increase protection. Its like making plan A, Plan B and Plan C. Making that kind of decision will make you feel secure so you can sleep at night without worrying about losing all your bitcoins. Even if you lose your btc in one account you still have more on other account of if that site blocks you  there are still wallet left to use.

I don't think so. Because I'd never used a multiple bitcoin wallet Because for me the most trusted bitcoin wallet is the coins.ph but only in the Philippines.  I really don't know how to used the triple wallet. For me i am contented to one bitcoin wallet. Because if the triple bitcoin wallet. I have no time to the other wallet. Because i will focus on one Bitcoin wallet.
By the way. You can try coins.ph wallet. If you here in the Philippines. It is very useful in this country. You can save your money of you want. And you can withdraw your money if when you want anytime anywhere.

Yeah. Me too i have used an another bitcoin wallet. Because if you directly sent a gambling website. My coins.ph bitcoin wallet is automatically deactivate for how many days. It is very annoying. But it's ok we have no choice. Cause i need that wallet to save my money. And withdraw any remittances in this Philippine country. 😂 The policy of coins.ph is changing. 😂😂

Yes, certainly I do use more than one wallet to store my bitcoin and it is a wise thing to do so.

Instead of dumping all your bitcoin in one place it is always better to diversify. In terms of investment as well as for storing.

It is safe and even if your one wallet is hacked by some hacked, you can at least save some of your bitcoin holding.

of course i use multiple bitcoin wallets to store my bitcoins but it is not so much about the security by spreading but it is mostly about convenience for me.

for example i use blockchain.info as a hot wallet that i keep small amounts and i can spend from it anywhere and anytime but it has lowest security to keep big amounts so i use Electrum as cold storage for most security by keeping it offline.

I think you don't need to use 2 bitcoin wallet, because it can give you a mess for you, and your wallet is the best to use is indeed Blockchain.info, because blockchain always gives you the option of doing any transaction and also the security so awake

Before i use multiple wallet like coins.ph and blockchain web wallet but as of now because i just find out that coins.ph is not safe to store bitcoin because if they find out suspicious transaction like your gambling and you always receive big amount of bitcoin they will not take hesitation or warn you for deactivation of your account so now i'm just using blockchain web wallet because i feel safer than using coins.ph because of the account deactivation issues.

I have 4 accounts on 4 different wallets, but I don't usually use the 2 of them (only sometimes with small transactions), and my coins are not equally distributed for all. I have that one wallet that I store almost all my bitcoin. However, even I'm not into separating my coins equally, I agree that it's pretty safe to save your coins on different wallets, so no matter what happens, you have backups and will not lose everything. There are lots of phishing sites and hackers these days, so better to be secured.

Coins.ph is only known wallet provider in our country where we can easily cash out our money eventhough we dont have bank accounts and also our wallet provider have different feature like paying bills and smart phone load but nowadays our wallet provider have many wallet locking issue thats why i use BLOCKCHAIN when storing my bitcoins for long time staking

I think that is a pretty cool feature.

oh cool! So can you have a breadwallet and a ledger wallet within a MultiBit? Or just different MultiBit Wallets?

Do not use breadwallet, they are pushing that bip75 thing which is anti privacy. Pro privacy people is boycotting breadwallet. Wallets supporting bip75 must die, so use something else like Electrum or something.

1 wallet per person is enough unless you have a ton of coins.

Yes, i use multiple bitcoin wallet for storing bitcoin but not just for security or behind fear of losing coins its because i get payment from many places including signature campaign payment, trading, cold storage, cloud mining (in little measure), many more.

really using multiple btc wallet clear my doubts and easy to remember why these transaction made.and i recommend this to everyone.

good job...everyone makes multiple btc wallet but not just for fear of hacking. because bitcoin is not any things which can be hack.
so now you just create multiple btc wallet for keeping safe it from malware, virus, phishing which attack your private key.so everyone do for make transaction easier not keeping safe from hacking.

in my opinion you are actually right, sooner or later you will have to use several addresses in my opinion as you might lose some addresses or just change wallets

i guess you might be right about this but if you actually use different wallet addresses on the same online wallet then i guess it wouldnt help you at all to avoid getting hacked

I find it natural to split my coins between couple wallets. Not necessarily because I want to keep my privacy but I feel more secured this way.
But if you own only small amount of BTC, say less than 1 BTC multiple wallets are maybe overkill, as it might be a hassle (for some people) to manage all of them.

Keeping small amount of btc in online wallet (for fast transactions and quick access) and rest of your BTC stored in Armory or Bitcoin Core is the best way IMO.

using multiple bitcoin wallets is not always good. you should try them and use only one or two that you find good.

because if you don't use password for them then you won't have any security and if you use passwords you have to set a different strong password for each of them and remembering all these passwords is going to be a hassle and you may even confuse them.

no i am using a sing wallet for storing my bitcoin and that is enough for my bitcoin to store there.it is a reliable and trust-able wallet. i can do fully trust on that coin.
its not about the security of the wallet, its about the anonymity. if you continue to use 1 wallet forever then you arent being anonymous in bitcoin.
I use a HD wallet that always changes my public address, but i also have a paper wallet for storing funds long term.

Hey guys,

I was wondering if you keep all your bitcoins in one wallet, or do you use multiple providers/accounts?

I am currently using 3 different wallets, it kinda feels safer not to store everything in once place...

Thoughts?

MC  :)
I also used three bitcoin wallet to store, one as a long-term investment because I believe bitcoin price will be very expensive in the future and the rest of the other wallet as storage for a moment.

I had 3 wallets before one year and after having some problems with my Coinbase wallet, i decided

to use only localbitcoins wallet to store my bitcoins.

There`s no 100% security even with a PC wallet  :-\

but you are not gaining any extra anonymity by doing this, because all your bitcoin addresses are easily linked together, you are just making it longer and you can easily check all of them by using something like walletexplorer to find all your addresses linked together.

True, using only one wallet was a good move. because if we use a lot of wallets there is a possibility that we're going to be confused because it forgot to put funds. not just sum up the time to Transact and pick the most popular wallet is the most secure locks done, because it is definitely the most popular wallet site (BC) has a security system so tight and so secret. you are so lucky

Coinbase or xapo that online wallet has a 2fa to secured your wallet but you can disable this or not use for authentication before you login..
I dont recommend online wallet i already experience bad things about those wallet so i convert in electrum it is better than using online wallet even theres a fee its ok for me safetyness is the best to choose..

when i didn't had much bitcoins yet,  i keeped all my bitcoins  in one wallet only  and i thought it is all right, as easier to remember password, but then i heard about wallet hacks and i use 4 now

and since i have 8 bitcoins  i simply keep 2 bitcoins  in each one of my wallets, and all are created  in different place, 2 in blockchain and so on, and  i think that i do good thing

i use only one bitcoin wallet right now and i think that i will never need any other wallets, i heard that blockchain.info wallet is not safe but i have never had any problems with it

It is a personal preference.

However, it is highly recommended that we have seperate wallets for different purposes. Like most of us for example, usually, people have 2 or 3 wallets. 1 of the wallets is for spending purposes and the other/s for holding their bitcoins and readying them to use/sell when the time is ripe.

using multiple bitcoin wallets is not increasing your security and it can even become a pain in the ass to keep all those wallets safe. but on the other hand you can use multiple wallets for different purposes like a cold wallet and a hot wallet for storing and spending respectively.

I can withdraw through real money. But. Many bitcoin wallet is very tired to manage all that wallet. Because i am the kind of person is very busy everyday. 😂😂😂

You are definitely right, storing all of your Bitcoin in one wallet is a really bad idea. If you want to safe a big amount of BTC, you should safe it in a cold storage. But for spending it, you can safe it in a mobile phone wallet.

I personally use only one wallet, which is blockchain.info. I have Mycelium on my phone but this is for backup only (in case I need to receive BTC on the go). After I get home, I usually sweep my Mycelium wallet into the blockchain one.

As a precaution, I have encrypted copies of my privkey stored on different places/devices/cloud services. Luckily, I can keep track of everything so a copy doesn't go AWOL and end up on my neighbor's phone.

I use a paper wallet for some of my coins generated from bitaddress.org offline and for spending or buying stuff online, I use Mycellium and blockchain.info for fast liquidity and such. I only put a small amount in my blockchain wallet, just enough for me to buy something I want or need.

Well, what I did is that I only use 1 wallet. However, I am going to generate multiple private keys thru bitaddress.org. I still have to download the webpage of the bitaddress.org and run it locally on my desktop unit. Disconnected the internet and enabled all firewall for all application without exception both incoming and outgoing for I am using windows OS.
From hereon, those generated private keys from the bitaddress.org, will be then be imported to Electrum. Thus, as a result I only need one wallet but had multiple bitcoin addresses.

I do not use the auto generated phase seed of electrum for I strongly believe in the near future a powerful computer will have  enough computing power  to crack and generate those seed phases and expose all the 16 different addresses or more along with it.

Having a private keys is edge since this is supported on most light client and full client nodes.

It's kind of mandatory that you do it. I think every user should at least have a wallet for daily spending and one for cold storage. The most practical thing is probably having three wallets, cold storage, daily spending wallet on the phone and daily spending wallet on the computer...

To remain safe and relevant in the bitcoin market, one needs to have more than one wallets. I was once a victim of bitcoin hacking and i lost close to 3 bitcoins to a hacker. Could it have been that I had only one wallet, I could have lost everything to the hacker. Lucky enough, the wallet that was hacked was the one with less bitcoins.

16 different privkey? sounds nitemarish

In lightweight client: Electrum, after generating the phase seed, automatically by default a 16 unique BTC addresses are generated for. All of which were generated from the public key as its seed. The public key is generated from the private keys as its seed in generation. While private is generated from the phase seed. A secret phase seed.

Speaking of wallets if you are engaging in gambling please do not use coins.ph if you are from the Philippines. They are very strict if they found out you are using wallet in gambling activities they will block your account.
Anyway multiple wallets is indeed good since diversion of btc deposit is urgent just in case of a attack from hacker. If one wallet is hacked or blocked your other btc is safe on the other wallet

i was never save all of my bitcoin only in one wallet because it's too risky for me and currently i have 5 blockchain wallet, altcoin exchange wallet and my local exchange wallet

Having 5 wallets in the same service(blockchain) will not  secure your money batter. if you want to use multi wallets then use different wallet instead of using multi wallet in the same site.
I Prefer to use one online wallet for receiving and sending money. because online wallets are easily accessible all over the world and you can use them everywhere.
and for Storing bitcoins I use just electrum and never open/import this wallet anywhere else (device/location) for security reason.

But if i will have at least 5 bitcoins i will use multiple wallet like putting the 3 btc on a cold storage for long term investment and i will put the 2 btc on online wallet for using it as a capital on trading.

Yep. I've always been taught to always have your money in separate locations like for example, some in my wallet, some in my tiny pockets, some in my bag.

I do that to bitcoins as well. I have multiple wallets for different reasons. One is for storing for long term, others are for purchasing stuff, cashing out, paying bills, etc.

I like with the bold sentences, that's true never put all of your balance in the same place because you getting a losing for any time and all of the ways. mixing online wallet and offline it's a good choice, but maybe having above than 1 in every wallet can is better because it's same means you're having a little mixing for your amount.

I have two different wallet as of now and both of it are online. One is use for earnings, buy stuffs and for payment for other services while the other is use for cashing out to fiat. I just have a small amount of bitcoin right now so those two are enough but if I already accumulated a significant amount then I will add another wallet that's not online.

Its better to say that I`m using multiple casinos to store my coins. Cause I have some coins in every almost every casino, and when I`m empty on one I play on other, and like that in circle. I use wallet just when I make some big win, or when i plan to cash out or buy something then I use wallet to gather coins from all sites.

I still enjoy in spending my coins, and for now I don`t have any plans to save coins. I use one wallet and I will not change it for now, it suits my needs very good. Multiple wallets will just confuse me.

I prefer multiple bitcoin wallets. Each for different purpose, form long time holding I prefer the localbitcoins wallet which is highly secure though its an online wallet. Form regular transactions prefer Blockchain.info, as it have got the best interface for easy access.

Holding multiple wallets for bitcoin storage is very important. Given the nature of transactions and security involved in the blockchain, it is important to have several wallets. This helps to cushion one against acts of hacking where bitcoins can be stolen. If you have bitcoins stored in different wallets, you can not lose all of them unlike if you have them in just one wallet.

You would still get hacked if your computer gets compromised.

Using several distributions of Bitcoin wallets can be useful if a zero-day exploit is found and it doesn't affect all the wallets. The most common issue is the RNG and it happened to Android wallets once. Yes, it affected nearly all of them. It isn't that possible for a wallet to get compromised without the computer having a malware since most are debugged and checked hundreds of times for exploits.

I was wondering if you keep all your bitcoins in one wallet, or do you use multiple providers/accounts?

I am currently using 3 different wallets, it kinda feels safer not to store everything in once place...

That's good. But be sure to know these different wallets. Because if you forgot your own password. That will be a great mess. Multiple wallets is useful if you know how to handle it. And just to be secure, different accounts, different passwords. We all know that there are also hackers who can hack your own account so make sure to keep it, never share it, and always think twice on giving/logging in your own account to anyone.

Nah.. I prefer just one, but secure. I've been using Blockchain for years now, and never had problems with it. Just changing the password regularly and securing my account made it be as secure as I wanted it to be.

The only 'problem' I had was that I've used a script for PrimeDice which stole my winnings. But that has nothing to do with my wallet not being secure - it was just me being stupid.

I like things simple, neat and efficient so I only have one wallet that I use. I do have Electrum installed on my PC but I only use it for transactions not permitted by Coinbase, like sending coins to LocalBitcoins. It's just a lot more convenient for me to have all of my coins in one place online. It means I can access them from any browser anywhere in the world  :)

It is always a good idea to keep your coins in different wallet to prevent any loss in some untoward incidence.Keeping bitcoin offline is much better though than keeping them online

Having a more confidential transactions is one good reasons to have a multiple wallet.

Well last time I commented on this post I mentioned that it is for the reason of adding security to bitcoins against attackers.

At this point I would like to add that I use multiple wallets since other wallets are not accepting bitcoins coming from gambling.

having multiple bitcoin addresses is not the same as having multiple wallets. and "a more confidential transactions" or more anonymity can be reached with simply having one wallet and using each bitcoin address only once (as satoshi has suggested).
and the only security that can provide you is the anonymity so attackers can't come to your house and beat you to get your private keys :)

They do not charge much for it. It says once an address is used for either transfer or withdrawals, a new address is generated for the same account so that we can have a track of how much we have saved. Good place to be part of. Thank you blockchain.

I only use 1 wallet. it's blockchain. I don't think it's secure enough, but I'm too lazy to create so many wallets. I'm affraid of forgetting my wallet password since I knew that I'm not too good in remembering. and I'm not collecting bitcoin at all in my wallet because I will convert my bitcoin every week because I need fiat to live here.

Yes, I do agree with you Mr. itsmarkoc. Because I do the same. I have three wallets, the blockchain wallets and the coins.ph wallet which is the wallet here in our country since using this wallet is my only way to buy bitcoins because I can't buy bitcoins directly using blockchain. After I bought bitcoins in coins.ph I transferred it to blockchain since transactions using blockchain are mush faster than transaction in our country's local wallet.

Because what I know is that you cannot buy bitcoin using your blockchain wallet?  I suggest you should try creating new bitcoin wallet in websites or companies available in your country so whatever happened, you still have another wallet.:)

I haven’t used any offline wallet so far but I am going to try it soon. My major wallet is with a service provider where I store my purchased bitcoins, I rarely keep my all bitcoins at one place and especially after such incidents of wallet providers hacking news I will stay refrain from keeping all eggs in one basket.

I'm using three wallets as well. I only put in coins whenever I am to use them and after I'm done, I withdraw the coins.

I actually have 4 wallets- two for long-term storage and two for short-term. I like splitting my cold wallet up as it reduces losses if one is hacked, and the other two are used for everyday transactions. The way I see it, the more wallets, the more recovery codes you need to keep, but the more security you'll have.

Yes, I use multiple bitcoin wallets to store my bitcoins. I do it for a number of reasons. For one, it helps me keep track of/budget my coins. I have several online and offline wallets for savings/hodling, a wallet for miscellaneous spending, a wallet for gambling, a couple of wallets that I use for receiving payments from various sources, along with a few more wallets I keep for specific purposes.

Also, having my bitcoins in various different wallets both online and offline means that I can't lose all my bitcoins in one fell swoop - either from someone hacking my shit or from me being careless.

Having multiple wallets is one thing. If you are worried about hackers, then you should point your focus at security of your computer and securing your wallet files with a strong passphrase. If you are really paranoid, then you can even choose to encrypt your wallet files on top of that.

You know I still use a Xapo faucet, so I have a Xapo wallet.  It's a complete time-waster but I'm somewhat addicted to it.

All my coins are held on my phone.  My primary wallet is Mycelium, which is great and I have no complaints with.  I also downloaded that bitcoin wallet for Android which is very similar to the LTC, DOGE, and Dash wallets.  I don't know how good that one is, but I'm pretty happy with all of them.  I don't keep any coins on Xapo, because I don't trust them enough to do so.

I used to use the blockchain wallet but don't anymore, and also that inputs.io (?) wallet.  I'm staying away from web wallets.

We have to keep our money safe in our own ways. I am starting to get scared with my bitcoin wallet too. You dont know what could happen.

I see that almost all the posters here do use multiple wallets to store their bitcoins.
I do understand the need in terms of security and the "don't put all your eggs in one basket" thingy but I still prefer to use one wallet only.
Why? Because I tried to use multiple wallets before and I must admit that I got confused.
Too many accounts with different passwords and passphrases and recovery emails. I never got used to that.
But however, I can say that it's okay for me to use one main wallet only because this wallet I used is based from my country.
I mean the support is easy. And I know where their office is. So, I think it's just okay.

A friend once told me "never use your main wallet for withdrawal or deposits in gambling sites" I think it is about the hacking issues also and to prevent knowing all profile about you.

Usually I use only one wallet when storing my unused bitcoin, but if you count those BTC  am trading, sure I use multiple exchanges wallet to store my Bitcoin for trading, well, we can't avoid it since if you are an active trarder you will have different exchanges to trade to and making it more wallet to store your bitcoin for intended trades.

People leave their phones on trains and buses and park benches all the time.  I'd suggest shifing some off of your phone to a more secure location and just keep some day-to-day funds there.  Buy all means keep a few BitCoins on your phone, but not all of them.  (Would you carry all your cash in your wallet?)

I use two wallets fist wallet is online wallet ( bloctrail) and The second wallet is offline wallet (vanitygen), remember never put the eggs on one basket always becareful with your money.

Yeah right, I personally use three different wallet is blockchain.info, electrum, and Coinbase then split my bitcoin. to avoid unwanted things. and most importantly do not store large amounts of funds in just one wallet providers especially in the exchanger wallet.
i use some different wallets also just because to have more safety if one wallet gets hacked or something like that

It doesn't matter where you keep them in addresses I mean because if one bitcoin address could be hacked then all of them are at risk.
a wallet could contain so many address and wallet is definitely different with an address, and as you say if people are using various wallet but keeping the money in the same address or even using that address's privkey in various wallet,it's the same or i say such a useless effort

you are indeed a true friend and very precise. Because I sometimes less comfortable against the wallet that I have, so I have to change or have some purses to make sure that money that I have perhaps safe from hackers. Because there are some cases which deals about the leaked bitcoin wallet or hacking exposed

yes I do use multiple wallets right now because its just  bit safer than normal, if you spread your bitcoins in different wallets its safer so if you wallet get hacked they will only steal a small amount of bitcoins.
Its just a sort of security measurement to be sure your bitcoins are secure and safe.

if a hacker steals your wallet file and manages to access your coins, then it means that you secured your wallet file with a weak password, or maybe you didn't had a password at all. always make sure you use long passwords with random symbols to secure your wallet files. that way a hacker won't be able to steal your coins when they have your wallet files.

what ever password you put, if the hacker hack your computer and steal the passphrase of your desktop wallet then you can do nothing, So it is upto you that where you keep your wallet,

I am using both desktop wallet and online web wallet, desktop wallet for investment that i use it only for storing my Bitcoins for future expenses, and i keep that wallet in a pendrive and when ever i am in need i use it on clean computer and as soon as my work finish i just uninstall after taking backup in pendrive. That way i am secure

Web wallet i am using for my daily work as i am using coinbase and their security level is very good, as soon as anyone uses my wallet on new ip they will first check with sms code and after that email confirmation, so in this two way i am fully secure.

I'm using it as a cold wallet so for me using more than one wallet is good because you see the potential of other wallets as well.

it is ok to just use one address. if you have reoccurring payments to receive like your salary or signature campaign it is easier for the sender and also kind of safer, since they can not make a mistake by sending it to the wrong address. using every time a new address makes it harder to connect those bitcoin to you, so basically you get a bit more anonymity.

It was, and is, probably the cheapest hardware wallet that you can get that is still performs very well. It doesn't come with many features but it gets the job done and that's all I need it to do. So if you are looking for a budget hardware wallet, then you should take a look at the ledger HW.1.

Yes, and this is a wise thing to do. Always diversify your holding by putting them in to more than one wallet if you are holding some serious money in to bitcoin. However, if you are holding a little amount of bitcoin, it makes no sense to use many wallets, Instead use a time tasted wallet like coinbase or blockchain.

I am using more than one wallet for both of my bitcoin and altcoins holdings. Even if your one account is compromised, then you can at least recover some from your another account.

whether you're using different address for every transaction it's actually doesn't matter if your wallet just got hacked since i believe that every address that you generated belong to one address,it's indeed safe if the one that get stolen is privkey not the wallet, but if it's the wallet then no way it's safe

I agree. lot of wallet make you confuse which one is your main wallet and other is side wallet. But if you are really in a long time in bitcoin you realize that you need a lot of wallet to earn more purposes :D So thats why then you can memorize or find what is your main wallet and other.

I am currently using 3 different wallets, it kinda feels safer not to store everything in once place...

I have most of my BTC in a "warm" wallet where the private key is encrypted with a strong password, but is still on my computer. I rarely open it.
I have a hot wallet on Mycelium with about $15 BTC at a time for quick and small transactions.

It depends on the wallet really. For instance there are wallets before you open the app lets you ask for a pin before accessing the wallet. And also when you log in into their pc site will send you a text message containing a code so that you know you are the only one who can access your account. For me having a multiple wallets is much dangerous to keep track with.

Splitting them is better because hackers are active and with multiple wallets they cannot take everything.

Yes and having multiple wallets will minimize the risk of loosing bitcoins, as if you save all your bitcoins in a single wallet and if anything goes wrong with it in future then you will loose everything that you have.

It's just smart to have your BTC spread around some...  Especially if you use online wallets.  I just keep pretty small amounts in my online wallets, and put larger amounts in hardware wallets Trezor or Ledger.

Another advantage to using different wallets is that you eventually find one that you prefer over the others.

Wallets being hacked is mostly due to bad security of the PC people are using, or in certain cases that people don't use a password to secure their wallet backups.

Some people even have a bait wallet (unsecured wallet backup with a certain low amount of coins) to see whether or not their PC is hacked. It's no guarantee at all, but it helps a bit.

Maybe he got confused about the blockchain confirmation page work. So many different wallet address that he might often see multiple transaction on just one confirmation. I also had that mistake at first I thought I was scammed but when I saw the tranasaction link I saw that the receiver is still waiting for the transaction to be confirmed 3 times before pushing through the sale.

Yes, I actually use 2 bitcoin wallets. The one is on blockchain and the other one is on a local bitcoin wallet. The local Bitcoin wallet enables me to avail services online, there's some in the wallet website itself. You can pay bills, as well, on their website. I put some of my coins to another Bitcoin wallet and I won't touch it until the Bitcoin's price increases.

It depends on how many bitcoin do you own. With low amount you don't necessarily need secondary wallet. But if your bitcoin stash is growing larger, you may thing about splitting your btc.
That will be good decision from security point of view. Also if you are using full validation wallet a good combo is to pair it with SPV local wallet or online wallet for fast access to your coins.

I am currently using 3 different wallets, it kinda feels safer not to store everything in once place...

Thoughts?

MC  :)
I used only used one bitcoin wallet in storing my bitcoin. Yes! Multiple wallets are good and safer in storing bitcoin but for now i would prefer to have one. I dont really need multiple wallet its beacause i have only low amount of bitcoin i own. But if my wallet are being hacked and all my bitcoins are stored their then it is my fault.

Also having 3 wallets, you might end up in confusion of your passwords, pin, and other verification process which is dangerous. Also if you are talking about safety you definitely must have different passwords in your 3 different wallets which you might end up mismanaging it as I myself right down my passwords and pin for every account which is dangerous for leaking information.

in present time i am using a single bitcoin wallet, actually i do not have much amount of bitcoin so that i can use multiple bitcoin wallets for security reasons, as one bitcoin wallet is enough for me in present time there i am not using multiple wallets.
Actually right, just for the little amount, are not need for making a multiple wallet for saving them, except if you're really love with your bitcoin, dude. the purpose of using multiple wallet for breaking your big amount into some part of amount.

I would say it makes sense to store your savings in different wallets.
Of cours, they have to have all a same level of security.
So if one gets compromised by any reason, not all the funds you posess are gone.
But I do not think this is necessary for lower amounts.
Personally I have a few wallets, yes.

Nope I just use only 1 wallet that is official one from blockchain.info
And i have no trust in other wallet so i use only 1 wallet. And also I have only 0.03 bitcoin andv I don't care about that much less amount. Now i am just learning bitcoin and very soon I will be a bitcoin millionaire :P ::)
I wonder when bitcoin wallet is secure so why people keep using so many wallets even some of which are scam and could run away with money anytime

True, theres no sense  on having  multiple  wallets  when you have only a small amount of  bitcoin. Multiple wallets would be only ideal if you posses huge or large amounts so that  you could  able  to partition  it  to lessen the risk  of being complete broke when   one wallet   have a  problem.

Same here, mostly people use multiple wallets for security reasons so that they don't have to pick up a complete loss of bitcoins if something happens to their wallet but as i don't have a lot of bitcoins so i'm not splitting my coins right now, if in future i felt doing that i surely would.

Yeah if you have small amount of coins then its good to go with a single wallet instead of going with multiple wallets as there is a chance that you may forget password in having multiple wallets.

If you want you also can come to yobit for trading you could make much profit by trading.

Exactly small amount don't need a multiple wallet, but mostly members have a lot of amount of bitcoins, so that's why they refer to multiple wallets. Also i don't think that forget password doesn't matter, because now in that time, we have a a lot of work doing in laptop and i think all our accounts, and files have a password. So if we have multiple wallets, so forget password it doesn't happen.

Same here, I use multiple wallet too, from different exchanges LOL j/k,  anyway i use electrum, multibit light wallet, and android wallet for my phone, but i would only use one if only there is an online wallet as secure as offline wallet where you have full control of your bitcoin once it isin there.  Im not a fan of webwallet, i don't know but i don't feel like keeping my bitcoin in it unless there is an important transaction that needs it.

that is good too but since i want to spend from my coins too, i don't find this method so usable for me. that is why i have multiple wallets. one is hot and in use when i deposit and spend from and another one is cold and is always out of my reach and i only add to the balance of it.

I personally have my coins spread across a few wallets, but nothing too major overall. I have it spread across something like two wallets in total, and I just have copies of those wallets in place to make sure that they're secure.

It would probably be a good idea for me to spread it apart more, but that's something I'll have to do eventually.

I'm only using one bitcoin wallet per account that I have own here. I think using too much bitcoin wallet accounts might just ended up you to forget the other bitcoin wallets passwords, just my opinion. Your bitcoin will ended up for nothing if that happens but I think it has some recovery key for you to change your password again if you forgot the first one. And using the same bitcoin wallet with many bitcoin accounts here will just put yourself into trouble because you might get banned and your account will be wasted.

I use several wallets because in the worst case I dont wanna lose all my funds, some are onnline and some are hardware wallets.
If you know anything about the history of bitcoin sometimes some sites close for no reason and therefore part of your funds if not all.

Yes I am using multiple wallet by both meanings, i.e more than one wallet in a single PC wallet "Electrum" and both electrum and multibit together, I find this easier to regulate rather than running one and having sending and receiving mixed, I don't know if it's more secure since your keys would be compromised if your PC is hacked etc...

I do make use of multiple wallets because it is allot more save if you have more then just one. If you somehow lose that one wallet where you have stored all your Bitcoin, then you are screwed.
Have multiple ones so that you can guarantee that you are somewhat save.

Yes ofcourse. For my vew storing in different wallets online is better. So if one of your account been stolen you will not lose all your bitcoins and still goung to have some spare to recover.
Well I don't think that it is safe to have many online wallets. If the website gets hacked then you are kind of screwed. Unless you use Blockchain.info. I recommend using a software or hardware wallet for more secure storage.

Yes, online wallets are not for long term and with big amount of bitcoins. The best use of an online wallets must be when we are using it as hot wallets for daily expenses, for an example.

You are mentioning about blockchain.info as an exceptional online wallet, is only valid when the user backing up his private-keys properly. Because I do see many people are not aware of exporting private-Keys and backing up.

For daily expenses it's better to use a light weight wallet for people not willing to use a client such as core that downloads the entire blockchain. That's much better than using online wallets. You'll be in control of all your coins, which isn't the case when you use online wallets.

A blockchain wallet for my every day use. and then a paper wallet for my savings. The paper wallet is printed and saved in a vault. It contains all my bitcoins, whereas the blockchain wallet only contains enough to go by.

If you store every Bitcoin in on wallet and you lose that wallets you also have lost all of your Bitcoin.

having more then one wallet makes sens, since you can reduce the risk of losing it all for whatever strange reason. but having to many is not helpful and makes you more work then it helps you.

I don't think the fee for having a lot of wallets is very high because for me that is just only a very small portion of your earnings or amount that you are going to send to someone. But for storing my bitcoins I don't use multiple wallets because that is going to be a waste of time for me, so I am sticking to one bitcoin wallet only.

I agree. lot of wallet make you confuse which one is your main wallet and other is side wallet. But if you are really in a long time in bitcoin you realize that you need a lot of wallet to earn more purposes :D So thats why then you can memorize or find what is your main wallet and other.
You know don't know where to use right ? some people are using multiple wallets but not because they want too but because they want to use it for gambling and another purposes like investment maybe its so hard for me to use multiple wallets maybe if i had so much bitcoin to save.

Not interested in bitcoin just because of a 0.01btc loss? Come on! Try to grow your patience level a bit more because this is internet, here everyone get scammed or pick up losses and people loss more than 2 or 3 bitcoins sometimes and you lose just a few bucks. Don't think about that but think about the time coming ahead where you will own way more than what you have now and then you will have to use multiple wallets for saving your coins.

I have only blockchain wallet registered in. I read review of this wallet. People have said this to be well secured. They say we can have so many accounts linked to this particular wallet alone. They do not charge much for it. It says once an address is used for either transfer or withdrawals, a new address is generated for the same account so that we can have a track of how much we have saved. Good place to be part of. Thank you blockchain.

Smart guy. If you have big amounts, that's the best way...
Well, multiple paper wallets sounds a nice way to keep you money safe. I think one Bitcoin in each wallet is good enough.

I think it is not only smart but mandatory to use more than one bitcoin wallet. I also had to join another api today because one program on internet is launching and I need to use this api for storing my btc for this new program, so always adding more processors, apis and wallets lol.

I think it is safer to distribute your coin to a different wallet, putting all of your coin in one wallet is not recommended, plus using multiple wallet going to give you knowledge about the advantage and disadvantage of different wallet, and by using different wallet you are going to have better coin management
yeah I agree with you in addition you will gain knowledge about the wallet you will also get a higher security when using many wallets, I think not a problem to be confused because it has a lot of purses, at least you minimize the risk of losing bitcoin

Yes, i do use many different wallet to store my bitcoin. It is more  secure than using only one wallet. If someone hack your wallet which contains all of your bitcoin, you might lose everything. You can prevent this situation by split your bitcoin into many parts and keep them in various wallet like i do

I used 2 wallets they are jaxx.io and mycelium, actually for bitcoin's wallet i just used mycelium and jaxx.io be used for altcoins. I could made sign massages on mycelium wallet and i could saved many altcoins on jaxx.io. between jaxx.io and mycelium there are deficiency and advantages.

I do believe in decentralization and don't put all the eggs in same basket. I am using at the moment four wallets for different tasks from storing my Bitcoins though the quantity is not very big but for me it is. For gambling purposes is separate wallet and for money transfers and other things to deal is totally different wallet. I don't mix them up with one another.

Not sure if you have heard it already, but blockchain.info has been in the news recently as hackers gained access to user accounts. This just shows that nothing stored on the internet is safe. That's why you should always have your coins in your PC instead of having a third party control them.

I was wondering if you keep all your bitcoins in one wallet, or do you use multiple providers/accounts?

I am currently using 3 different wallets, it kinda feels safer not to store everything in once place...

Thoughts?

Yes! I used multiple accounts to store my bitcoin. It is because I want to secure it perfectly, I am much confident and had a peace of mind too if I'm the one who manage and taking care my own bitcoin.

Every smart people should have different wallet online, that is to minimize the risk as we cannot see the future, it could be stolen and all our investment are gone, you do not call it a savings instead so it is just good to diversify it.

using multiple bitcoin wallets is not really "being smart" you can have only 1 bitcoin wallet and be the safest possible. i believe you should call it paranoid instead of smart.

making a secure bitcoin wallet which is always offline and stays that way is not really hard, and i am talking from 2 years of experience with having only one bitcoin wallet on an offline linux system.

Well for me you don't have to even have offline wallet because that is just going to be applicable if you are going to hold a lot of bitcoins to be stored with your offline wallet. But for me, using online wallets are already helpful and I do use multiple wallets so that I am able to allocate my funds for paying my bills and just for saving.

Block.io can only be good for small level merchants and i don't like to use them as web wallets for daily life. You can take a look at blockchain.info , coinbase.com , xapo and electrum wallets which are meant to be online wallet and block.io is better for merchants to accept payment from customers.

Yes, I do have multiple Bitcoin wallets but I didn't do it specifically to store my Bitcoins. The first Bitcoin wallet that I'm using is a local one and it allows me to buy this and that from services that is available in my country. It also lets me top up my phone, the conversion into my local currency is also shown.

Behind all these awesome features, the wallet website doesn't let me sign a message with my address. We tried talking to them about this and they only said something like "Sounds cool!" so me and my fellow Bitcoiners had to create another wallet on Blockchain to sign a message.

Yeah because the "need" is the one which really dictates it. If you feel like you don't need multiple wallets then don't do it.
It just happens that you need to somehow secure your coins (because you have a lot of it) so you had to make many wallets.

You need to make use of multiple wallets because if you manage to lose the wallet where you have stored all of your bitcoin then you are screwed because you have lost them all at once.
If you have more then one then you can spread the bitcoin if you lose one you still have some left.

Think it is not a bad idea to have multiple wallets, find some are better for me on my cellphone when I am hitting a atm. For some reason Blockchain does not feel smooth to me when I am operating it on my cell,so I use mycellium and everything appears to move quicker. Might just be I am struggling to learn the new blockchain or a perception biases.

Bitfinex is not a wallet. It is an exchange site. And leaving your coins on the exchange sites is not a good practice. Those people who treats their bitfinex account as wallet should have learned their lessons by now. You need an online wallet so you can spend your bitcoins easily, which is good for bitcoin economy. Most of your bitcoin should be in your cold wallet.

I do. I prefer using more because it's safer. If you're targeted by a hacker and you're lucky enough to get just one of them hacked, you would lose less money. For example, if you got $100, you can spare it in 10 wallets of $10 each and you'd have $90 left then.

But the problem is what if the hacker has an access to your computer, then even if you have 100 bitcoin wallets, he would still be able to access all of them. You just gave him some more extra work but it didn't actually help you.

Another thing is that if you used the same password to these 10 bitcoin wallets, then finding the password of one of them will reveal all the 9 left. Having a different password for each of the 10 bitcoin wallets will be such a hassle. Imagine having to remember 10 combinations of alphanumeric keys, upper and lower case letters, and a symbol. You would most probably forget one or many of those 10.

Yes, I do and it is the wise thing to do. It is not suggested to hold all your bitcoin in a single wallet. You need to have a secret account which you will never disclose to any public forum.

Another account you can keep for trading earnings which will be linked with the trading account. You can have one more account to receive earnings from signature campaign. Once these account will have some good amount, then you can transfer it to your secret account to store it safely. Diversification is always good.

I chose Xapo a few years ago and don't regret it because of the additional features released over time.

Once Bitcoin goes up a bit more and remains stable it'll lead me to getting a debit card so I can travel abroad without fear of conversion fees.

In all honesty there's a lot to learn when using many wallets that may take time, but for those afraid of managing it all then 1 good web wallet will outperform all expectations.

People fear that Xapo doesn't provide the keys to each coin, despite this they provide security + full ownership to make up for it.

I am still so poor that I can't afford to store my bitcoin in separate bitcoin because to switch from account to account of various wallets. I am happy and i feel secure with one wallet only that is of blockchain.

Same here :) I don't have that much bitcoin to store so I am only using one wallet and that is Coins.ph. Sadly, I have a limit on how much my transaction will cost since I cannot verify my Identity because I am still a minor and I don't have their required ID's for that. So, I am now earning and soon I will reach the quota for these wallet and I am planning to store the excess bitcoin in a separate wallet like Blockchain.io. I choose that because they are likely the same. In terms of security and other features :)

I'm using multiple wallet too, I think it safer than just one where you can put apart your bitcoin.
moreover, there are several options wallet available for that has it own advantages. I'm not a wallet expert, just using two of them like blockchain and xapo.

I use about three wallets one in my phone so I could buy something in the real world with bitcoin, unfortunately it has gone unused so far, another for daily use and the final one where I store most of my bitcoin.

I keep some bitcoin on paper wallets. Some bitcoin I keep on an exchange to use for trading but I don't keep the majority of it on an exchange for security reasons.

Yes, I do use multiple wallets. Although admittedly some only have a few hundred bits while others, which I use more often would get majority of what I'll use for that week or so. I use 5-6 wallets. One in desktop, one is my local exchange, the others are blockchain, coinbase, crypto-pay and xapo(not much).

As we all know, never put all your eggs in one basket. Really can't be too careful especially with all the hacks going on. Also, I usually only put enough funds on web wallets which I would use for the week or for payments, shopping, etc. Can't hurt taking extra precautions. I've also been thinking of getting a more secure one like ledger or something. Haven't tried/stored in a paper one yet.

nope i use only one wallet to store my bitcoin because I have only few amount of bitcoin that if i store my bitcoin in 4 5 wallets then then each wallet will have pony 2 3 dollar. and i am not so rich that I could use multiple wallets to store huge amount of money.
Lol I think if you only have a little money you do not need to use a lot wallet, because it will only be bothersome and confusing,
try using one wallet safe enough

using one wallet online is not at all a safe method, you need multiple wallets and make sure you keep the large amount in a cold storage rather than a hot wallet

yeah you can see a lot of events before that some exchange site to be a scam and you should be careful in using the funds in exchange, do not keep too long in the exchange

Everyone should have at the very least a minimum of 2 wallets, a hot wallet and cold storage, even if you don't have a lot of coins you still need two.

Personally i used to try out every wallet released but don't have time for that anymore.
Now i have 3 main wallets, online wallet, Mycelium for phone and good old paper for the cold storage needs.

now I have only one Wallet to store all my bottom. i feel ready with one wallet because i am student and I don't have that much time to switch or log in to multi wallets for transaction. so 1 wallet servers me very well and I don't have too much amount to store in separate wallets.

everyone is already making any organizing for storing the data of all wallet and i think that's will always be general things before making a lot of wallet for storing your funds. ;)

online wallet? never mind , if you hold a large amount bitcoin any online wallet is never recommended. but well if you stored a little amount only. basically too much wallet could make you confused to figure out which one you are looking for later. but used 1 wallet only not a good decision , as you may face unexpected technical or non technical problem , who knows? so always used two wallets at least , 1 primary and the other to cover in case something bad happened.
