I just find out or learned that we can actually keep USD online just like bitcoin without worring of blocked accounts and exchanges running away.In other words we can have complete control over our money just like bitcoins by using Tether. I still don't know about this much but i guess some bitcoin enthusiast have knowledge on how to buy Tether USD safely and how it works? Please share your knowledge with me.
I don't have bank accounts so can't really convert my 28+ Bitcoins to USD during panic selling at the time of halving so i guess Tether USD is another way of doing so.i just don't know how? so please guide me in the right direction.  ???
Use Polinex.  Very easy.  Just like you say - no bank account necessary.  Just move your BTC to USD Tether and wait out the crash.  Then, when things hit rock bottom, you can switch right back.

You can send dollars all over the world, for free, too!  They stay dollars the whole time and no exchange rate risk.  USD Tether is the best kept secret ever.  It's like blockchain dollars.  awesome.

I think in your case, you want to send your Bitcoin here and then convert to USDT.

You can buy it at some exchanges like poloniex. It is called USDT on that site. You may need to fund your account with bitcoins and then convert.

Tethers can be securely stored, sent and received across the blockchain and are redeemable for cash (the underlying asset) pursuant to Tether Limited’s terms of service.

-- From their FAQ.

I haven't filled in the AML/KYC information to test it out, so I'm not sure, but I believe you can.

I'm trying to figure out what I can realy do on their online wallet.
It says on their page that you can send BTC there and hold them in USDT, but it mentions only "low conversion rates" and doesn't say anthing about the rates and if they have a spread for conversion.
Did anybody do such a hedge on their webpage allready?

Open a wallet at tether.to.  It is a web wallet.  Send some usdt to your wallet and then you can wire it to your bank from there.
Most people will store their tethers on an exchange or in the web wallet.  From my understanding, it's possible to store tethers offline, but I haven't figured out how to do it.
It has something to do with omniwallet and armory.  There's a procedure on this github page
https://github.com/OmniLayer/omniwallet/wiki/Armory-Offline-Addresses
that you have to follow, but I don't understand how it works yet.
Anybody know how?

Website like https://www.changer.com allow you to buy USDT with e-money (PM, okpay, etc). I don't know if there's any exchange that accepts bank deposit, but even if you've really found one the handling fee would be quite costly.

Correct, however tether is now linked to bitfinex and they are not allowing cash deposits or withdrawals. It has not affected the price significantly though so you can still use it as a proxy for real dollars.

The way i understood it, tether is on poloniex and only meant for short term, as risk if exchange goes down.

I think that the link and info that is missing here is:

1. Yes USDT is a "blockchain dollars"
2. You can buy from the official site after verification and everything (already mentioned up top)
3. DONT MISTAKE US and USDT
4. this option isnt valide any more (BTC-E have big issue)

that what my research taught me! :)

On most exchanges, usdt isn't the same as usd.  There's a usd/usdt trading pair on poloniex, bittrex, kraken and maybe some others.  The exchange rate is close to 1:1, but not exactly, and of course you have to deal with trading fees.
There is one exchange where usdt and usd are totally equivalent:  Bitfinex.  If you deposit usdt, the full amount shows up as dollars.  Once upon a time, an American like me could have withdrawn those dollars through a wire transfer.  There are people in Taiwan who can still do that.  By the same token (to coin a phrase), if you have usd on balance at Bitfinex, you can withdraw usdt directly, without having to convert usd to usdt.
This is all because Bitfinex owns tether, the company.  And because Bitfinex is there, with its high liquidity, pegging usdt to usd, the rest of the market follows through arbitrage.  But because usd and usdt and not actually one entity, the rest of the world's exchanges treat them as separate.
And so you have the trading pair usd/usdt, with an exchange rate that stays very close to 1:1.
If anything ever happens to Bitfinex, that goes out the window.  Remain aware that USDT has counterparty risk.  It is fully as vulnerable as Bitfinex itself.
in a tether wallet, can we hold the private key as well?
There are wallets where you can hold tether private keys, but it's significantly more complicated than holding bitcoin.  I sort of looked into it and gave up.  Counterparty risk poses a bigger danger than having your coins stolen from an exchange or web wallet, in my opinion.  Not worth the trouble of wrangling with the complexities of some mastercoin-enabled wallet.

Very clear explanation and i got it now.  Maybe one can use it if he wants to have a quick and temporary get out of crypto particularly if everything is going down then when everything subsides then he can back again by buying bitcoin using usdt. but the risk is still there for anything can happen like it bitfinex goes down then everything you got also disappear instantly

just use it for keeping out of bitcoin whenever you see it fit. then use it again to go back to bitcoin when you see a good entry point. if you want USD then go to an exchange that support USD and not USDT.

Bittrex supports only USDT, you cannot keep dollars there.
Some exchanges that do support dollars and withdrawals to your bank account are GDAX, Bitstamp, Kraken
Bitfinex also supports dollars, but you can't withdraw to your bank account.  What you can do is withdraw the dollars as tethers.  Whether you can use those tethers for anything is another question.
As I stated in an earlier post, Bitfinex is different from other exchanges; on Bitfinex, USD and USDT are equivalent.  Whereas other exchanges have a trading pair for USD and USDT, Bitfinex makes no distinction between US Dollars and USD Tethers.  Which means that if you have USD on Bitfinex, you can withdraw the same amount of USDT without having to make a trade to convert your USD to USDT.
That is because Bitfinex owns Tether.
What is the blockchain?
I'm not sure what you mean.   If you're asking what is the tether blockchain, tethers are recorded on the bitcoin blockchain as "colored" coins.

I use USDT as a hedge against a drop in bitcoin. When I feel like bitcoin runs up too fast I usually convert to USDT and sit on the sidelines for a retracement then jump back in. It is a lot more convenient than converting to cash and dealing with that hassle.

tether's website is tether.to
where you'll find a web wallet you can send tethers to.  Supposedly you can withdraw the money to your bank, but I've never done it and I have no idea if it works or not, especially considering that tether's parent company, bitfinex, has lost its banking connections in the U.S.
The omniwallet is an offline wallet, but again, I have never used it.  I encourage anyone who's interested to explore it.  Just now I tried to go to omniwallet.org, but the site is down.
The omni blog is here:  https://blog.omni.foundation/

why anyone would want to actually store tether when it's worthless is beyond me, but whatever.

The Tether trading volume at Kraken is completely dismal. You will have a really hard time selling
any non-miniscule amount of USDT. You are better of buying a liquid cryptocurrency with your Tether
(e.g. BTC, LTC, ETH) and sell it at an exchange afterwards.

In other words, you can't buy usdt from tether.to.
About the only way to use real usd to buy usdt is by finding an exchange that handles both usd and usdt.
Kraken handles both.  So you could wire usd to Kraken and use it to buy usdt.  That's the only way I know to convert usd directly into usdt.
Question for the crowd:
Are there any other exchanges, besides Kraken, that handle both usd and usdt?

If you are using bittrex for example, and you want to go to the sideline then the only way to do that is to buy usdt against your coin. Particularly if price is at ATH then re-enter again after any pull back.

Title: Re: How to buy Tether USD?

What is tether usd?
It's a cryptocurrency worth one dollar. A sort of alt-dollar.
The value stays very close to one dollar, like within a window of a few tenths of a percent or something.  If you want to see, check the usdt/usd exchange rate on Kraken.
On Bitfinex, tether is always worth exactly one dollar, because Bitfinex owns the company Tether, which maintains the peg.  If you have usd in your account, you can withdraw it in the form of usdt.  Now that usd withdrawals from Bitfinex have essentially been terminated, tethers are the only way for most people to withdraw usd.
And the usdt usd peg is not one of those complicated floating market mechanisms or some crap.  It's a real peg.  The company Tether keeps a pool of USD equal to or slightly exceeding the value of all the usdtethers in existence.
As long as Bitfinex and Tether survive and don't do a flyer, usdt will theoretically keep its value at one dollar even in the case of an old fashion "bank run" where everybody withdraws at once.  But I suspect that even if Bitfinex/Tether holds up its end of the deal, bad things could happen in the event of a run; because other exchanges are probably crediting customers with non-existent tethers in a fractional reserve.

If, and that's the biggest "if" of the century, you trust Bifinex and Tether, Tether$ are great for trading, as you can put them in cold storage while waiting to buy bitcoin, ether or whatever. This takes them off the exchange without paying transfer fees. Alas, you might just as well have US$ sitting on Bitfinex, as you have to trust them anyway.

Buying can be found in many websites, what I found seems like an easy one is from www.coinspot.com.au , buy Tether USD by just putting the amount of it in the form they are providing on their homepage, then it will be sent to your Coinspot wallet. As I searched, it is 100% legit base on spam checkers and reviews.

So if I want to buy some USDT with USD, I have to buy coins first?
From https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/tether/#markets
I find there is a USDT/USD market in Bitfinex, but when I check the link, there is no such market.

The only way to get USDT is to buy altcoin ex. Bitcoin, and change it to USDT on polo or bitfinex?
There's no other way like direct buying USD to USDT?

Kraken has the usd-usdt trading pair.
So yes, you can use dollars to buy tethers, although I can't think of a good reason to do so.

market place exchanger is support tether USD is two market place
poloniex dot com and bitfinex dot com, you can buy USD in there and withdraw money can use USD tether
Are these the only exchanges which are exclusive to buying tether? Also, does tether differ from usd in any way or is it just a renaming of usd within the crypto space? I’ve recently heard news headlines that tether isn’t worth the true one dollar worth, is this something that can be weighed internally some how?

Can someone who knows explain why it is not possible to buy USDT directly with USD?  Are there any legalities involved that is stopping this market from being created?  I mean it seems like it will be really cool to use credit cards to buy some USD tether without having to go through the hassle of exchanges.

You can buy it on Kraken.

You can't buy it or sell to directly from tether with any method so be thankful there's Kraken at least.

Thanks for this information.
I just checked, and found that the current price is about 1.01 USD, the volume is around $1 million/day, which is not very high.

So yes, you can use dollars to buy tethers, although I can't think of a good reason to do so.

A reason to do so would be if you wanted to dollar cost average into an alt on Poloniex that isn't traded on Kraken.

Edit: Also, alt pairs on Polo with USDT seem to be priced lower than alt pairs on Kraken with USD, even accounting for the buy ask spread, so, as long as you're getting 1 USDT for your 1 USD, you seem to be able to get a better deal for alts on Polo than buying them directly on Kraken.

Edit 2: It's not one-to-one on Kraken. Scratch the second idea.

A lot of popular exchanges sell this token. Even on Bitrex and Binance you can buy this coin. I did not know before that it was a token, it seemed to me that this was a centralized currency

You are correct that tether is a token; it's a colored coin that lives on the Bitcoin blockchain.
But it is also a centralized currency.  Tether users are relying on the good faith of the tether company to maintain corresponding dollar reserves.
Tether only works because people trust it.  What if people stop trusting tether and there's an old-fashioned panic and a run on the currency, with everybody trying to cash out?
That's when the rubber hits the road.

If you are on Bittrex or Polo, then simply go there and buy Tether. It is instead of USD
