Just wondering how many actual miners there are in the newbie community...

I've been mining for about a month

Mining at 290MHash/s here. Starting in early April at 2BTC/day, and stopped because the price was only $1/BTC (I actually sold 23BTC@1USB ea). Not my best decision ever.

Started about a week ago, which I would have started sooner.  Mining about a BTC a day at 650Mhash/s. 

Have had the GUI GPU Miner up runing at about 10.8 max Mhash/s for over a day now.
Gonna get a CPU miner going if I can, and it gets at least 3Mhash/s.
Within a month I hope to buy a rig for about 300$ that will get ~250Mhash/s.

I started back on 2/16/2011, been adding ahrdware slowly since then.

up to about 1.6GH/sec right now, with 5x 6870's, 1x 5830 and the leftover cpu power for the 3 boxes those cards are in.

not mining... I thought I read mining takes quite a bit of electricity costs that prohibit any real gain???    ???

I was mining, switched over to namecoin about a week ago

that depends on your cost of electricity, and how many hashs you can crank out.
it costs me about USD$ 0.30/hr or USD$7.25 per day, so as long as I make at least 1 BTC I'm coming out ahead.

At 1.6GH/sec, I can make at least 2.5BTC, so it is possible to make money

Depending on your electricity cost. Where I am, I get free electricity (and the PC is on 24/7 anyway, so the difference from idling to mining isn't that big).

Unfortunately I'm only mining at around 4mhash/s. Kind of useless, so I guess I'll stop when I hit 0.001 BTC. Yay, a tenth of a cent!

The first thing I did was figure out mining and get a miner and connect to a pool, took me a bit to figure it all out, but now I'm working on downloading the bittyblocky stuff so my wallet works


Oh great... now I can only post once a minute, except when I get the error saying I posted less than 60 seconds ago, that counts towards a post... so I have to wait another full 60 seconds before trying again, hope I don't wait 59.8 seconds... *breaks out the egg timer*

I'm assuming you are using only CPU mining.  you might try the ufasoft miner.  
easiest way to use it is to download the latest guiminer,  https://github.com/downloads/Kiv/poclbm/guiminer-20110609.exe (https://github.com/downloads/Kiv/poclbm/guiminer-20110609.exe)
just ignore the errors about no openCL drivers not found, you dont need it for CPU mining.

i have a hard time getting excited about namecoin. after reading a few pages of that first announcement

No, I'm apparently using my NVIDIA GT 320M with RPCminer CUDA. Not very good speeds were posted on the wiki, so I'm assuming it's going at the max speed. Kind of funny how bad a 6 month laptop is.

on my old 8800gt.. cuda really sucked compared to the default miner. you may want to stop it and just try the
default which is pcolbm or whatever.

A laptop will never be a good miner, you know how laptops are generally shitty for playing games, it's the same limitation, you got a crappy video card compared to what you could get on a desktop computer


Also, do rpcminer-cpu as well, compare speeds, it's possible that it might be a little faster, on my Mac Mini it was... well, compared to 4way, not really sure what 4way is though...

I am mining at 50MH/s with a 4830.

CPU miner (i5 core 2.26GHz) is doing 1800khash/s, not experiencing any slowdown like the CUDA one did. I'm just thinking that laptops arn't as powerful.  :(

OK, this is weird. I'm apparently getting 5.8mh/s on CPU, only 4.1mh/s on the NVIDIA, for a total of 10mh/s. I'll play around with it. Also no lag! o-o

CPU mining is not good in general.

Get yourself a kill-a-watt and see for yourself. With a few calculations you can determine profitability as well as learn some new things in the process.

Yea, I've been wanting a kill-a-watt for a while now, they're just so darn cool.... and I know it's only like 16 bucks, maybe once I get a REAL miner going I'll grab one with some extra funds...

I am mining on two computers since 10 days. I was lucky to bought a 5770 for each for gaming before, so i could start without any cost.

For now, i am on the side of that people who say, buying mining hardware doesnt pay off.

Haven't really had much of a grip on the workings of the economy until more recently, now i try to both day trade and mine, failing pretty hard as a trader though.  :-\

Noooob since the 5th and I've almost got my first coin mining at ~160m h/s for ~12hrs a day using deepbit.

i have been mining since the 7th of june, started on my laptops cpu, moved to my friends gaming rig he built last month, now i went and got a 6870 for 200 and a 700 watt psu for 50. put it into an old desktop i wasnt using now im getting 300mhash/s. my friends computers getting 211 mhash/s. i set up both the computers on deepbit.net. i wish i had been more active on the forum instead of reading mostly. i was a lurker, now im considered a troll. it kind of sucks but oh well.

you know, a teamspeak or ventrillo server might be a good idea.

Just about to have ago at mining.

HI - been lurking in the shadows for a month or so, but this is my first post  ;)

I've been mining for two weeks on a couple of CPU's and a laptop GPU but was only collecting about 0.02btc per day (maxing out at 7 mhash/sec).

My old 2006 Mac Pro really needed a bit of an upgrade so amongst a few other bits I found a XFX HD5870 for £120 (UK).
Tested that on and off for a day or two, but was disappointed to only get about 114 mhash/sec in OS X. Since then have discovered that Apples open CL implementation isn't the most efficient out there.

I've now installed Ubunutu on a partition, and overclocked / underclocked the 5870 to core 950 Mhz / Memory 300 Mhz.
I use Phoenix with the phatk kernal and now pull in a respectable and stable 420 Mhash/sec at 75ºC.

I've been running with that setup for around 24hrs now and mined just under 1BTC on Slush's pool. I think this will drop dramatically in a day or two when the difficulty rises... although I still don't really understand what drives that.

I'm sceptical by nature and to be honest I really don't know how bitcoins will go in the future, especially after the past few days, but one can hope. My main target at the moment is to cover the cost of GPU and electricity whilst slowing padding out my wallet with a few BTCs.

So far I've really enjoyed the learning process and tinkering to get to where I am.
I now know a little about bitcoin, overclocking, and Linux where previously I knew zilch, so for me its already worth it. Plus my Mac has a shiny new upgrade and is now a semi decent graphics machine too (I spend half my day in photoshop, so the GPU really helps)  ;)

My regular desktop CPU does about 2.5 Mh/s, so after an hour to see if it would get any faster I turned it off as a waste of time.

But it would be nice to see a how-to for noobs who aren't computer whizzes, which says how to do it. All the explanations I've seen go over my head.

I've been mining for a month now and reading here the whole time about mining and BTC in general.

I'm stuck with an Nvidia GTX 470 for the time being...maybe in another month that will change, depending on what things look like.

Mining at 60Mhash/s with a GTX460, just for fun really, I love the idea and could be very disruptive and exciting in the future.

If you have a gaming rig anyway, you've got nothing to lose really, electricity is cheap. It's a bit disconcerting to see the pool performance rising from 1500Gh/s to 1850Gh/s though.  What will it be tomorrow?

I started two days ago, I have pretty much every machine and spare part running for a total of 1Ghash/s.  I'm not looking to make a "quick buck" more than I think it is interesting that I can make my existing hardware pay for itself and enjoy the process.  (I've rebuilt all my machines so far, cleaned up their cables for airflow, etc.  It's been a blast)

I have been mining for almost a month now. But I only have one ATI Radeon HD 5750 and it sits in my iMac.
This only gives me ~ 74 MH/s. I figure if I had it running under Arch Linux instead of OS X I could get twice as much.  :-\

Been mining since I heard about BitCoin, which was about 2 days ago.
300-310 MHash/sec on 5850.

Tried mining. Found converting $ was quicker.

Actually at the current price it'd be $.02. That's my two cents on this issue... hah see what I did there...

Been following Bitcoin for a while now, but decided to jump in.  Doing mining, testing things out, and really happy with the results, but I'm running a laptop, so no real expectations.  Hoping to buy a mining rig in the coming months and see if I can really make anything happen with this. 

Not just an increase in mining, but an increase in the quality of mining hardware. Currently about 9.71 blocks are being solved every hour, and the system is supposed to keep it around 6, so I think we'll see a pretty big increase in difficulty, but with the volatility of the market on Mt. Gox right now, we don't know if the value of mining will go up or down.

I started mining yesterday, the same day I discovered Bitcoin. Not sure how profitable it will be, but I thought it would be fun to try. Personally, I think the heyday of mining is long gone, but there still is money to be made from it. The people who really profited were those who mined in the early days and kept their Bitcoins.

No way. Imo, we are still near the beginning. What if BTC goes to $500 and you saved your BTC. What if you saved 1200 in a year?

I started out mining, few day trials on each pool. After that I did some calculations and found for me at least and the equipment that I own that it just simply isn't practical.

I am a programmer but learning about Gaming Hardware.

Seems those with a background in building Gaming Hardware
have the edge, so not exactly a level playing field, but all the
info it out there for those who look.  It would be more difficult
for a hardware head to learn programming

I know what you mean. I first heard about BTC over a year ago and summarily dismissed it. And how here I am again. Oh well.....at least I'm here.

currently mining and trying to get my first bitcent (0.01)! At 10Mhash/s and 10% efficiency this will take a while, but I need 0.01 to withdraw it from the mining site. Then I will finally have my first bitcent in the wallet!

Also fairly new to mining... I found out about Bitcoin last Friday and started mining on Saturday.  Currently mining at a rate of about 3.3 GHash over at BTC Guild, and trying out 1bitc0inplz's bitp.it pool (although I've been having some troubles).

Currently running:

• 3x 5050's @ 360 MHash
• 8x 5830's @ 275 MHash

Mining for a few days now. Only running about 32 Mhash/s so nothing special. I will admit I've been looking for an excuse to buy some new gear to upgrade my gaming rig. Looks like I'll be going ATI this time around.

I'm brand new. I just started mining yesterday. I'm running 205MH/s on a 6850.

i have made a whopping total of 0.02 coin.

I am pushing 660Mhash/s with my two cards now, but will probably only be mining for 1 more difficulty increase.  With the bitcoin market as volatile as it is right now, there is so much more profit to be made buying low and selling high.  And I expect the difficulty increases to be MASSIVE, so that basically only the people who went all out are making any money off of it.

What 5830 do you have?  I have the Sapphire 5830 that was 110 on newegg a week ago, and I am getting 306Mhash/s out of mine, but I have gotten it as high as 315Mhash/s.  Don't want to push it though so I run it only at 306Mash/s 24/7.

well i just discovered bitcoin and mining about 12 hours ago. So after a few hours getting my hardware happy I started mining. A long time ago i was a pro gamer and have always used laptops. Most people have this thing that laptops are crappy and etc. I would have to agree that Most laptops are. My laptop isnt included among the crappy. Currently mining at about 210mh/s which from what i have read isnt too bad with a single 5870. The only thing i havent figured out quite yet is how to get the coins i have earned into my account on mtgox

Been mining since Wednesday on my core 2 duo at a whopping 6MH/s  :D I started with minerd but that only gave me about 990kH/s. Changed over to ufasoft and now get just over 3MH/s per core. Five days of testing and messing around has gotten me 5 bitcents  ;D When I get time this week I hope to be up to 200MH/s gpu mining after I rebuild my other system.

I get around 20Mhash and in three day I've made a whole 0,02 BTC.

Probably costed more than they where worth in electricity.

I figured my dual quad-core processors would pump out some serious hash rates. I was severely disappointed :(

Funny how much more efficient GPUs are vs CPUs.

So don't start out with 6990's. Start out with a couple 5830's and move up from there. Not many are starting with 6990's.

I'm a newbie, started out about two weeks ago and finally registered for this forum.

I have 2-5830s (an xfx and a sapphire) , and 2-5570s

I can't get the 5830's over 255mh/s, but I've been using the AMD overclocking built in to Catalyst.  I'll have to follow everyone else's lead on underclocking the memory to get it higher.

The 5770's are doing 195mh/s each

I can't get my 5830's over 210 come hell or high water. I tried the Trixx Utility but my system froze up. Maybe I need to up the voltage....?

I won't be overclocking too much, and I don't plan on over-volting.  I don't want to burn the chips up or get gatewear, so I will overclock but only a little bit, maybe 5-10%

It seems to me like mining is worthless unless you have a large rig or set of rigs already established to beat the electricity-bitcoin worth spread. You must be scaled. Seems like too much risk at this point. You might as well just trade if you think the BTC will increase in value. With all the GPUs sold out online, seems like mining is not worth all the trouble. Or, you could join a pool. Don't know much about mining cost-effectiveness right now though, maybe someone here can educate me. Would love to learn the history of mining competition.

I have been mining on a 5850, getting around 285MHps, just added a 6990 for $730AUD (~$770USD), so now im over or around 1GHps.

When this card pays itself off I'll buy another, and continue to reinvest all profits into mining, until either:
A. its no longer profitable, in which case I can sell the hardware at a profit on ebay (except for keeping a kick-ass gaming rig for me);
B. I make enough per day to live confortably off of mining

Don't quit your day job. This sucker has an expiration date on mining. Or hold your coins and pray for $1,500 BTC. Congrats on getting the 6990, seem to be hiding under very large rocks state side.

Hey Hey I'm fresh off the boat. Still pretty clueless about everything except some basics that I've picked up yesterday. First I need to read a lot more on the subject, because I see there is tons of people already saying to be careful.


Right now I have 2 questions if anyone could point me to the right direction

who/what determines difficulty and is there an approximate rate I could calculate it for the near term to run the numbers for my farm.

since I'm in Europe prices on 6690 and 5850 are a lot higher than in USA I figured out that I get the most M-hash/sec vs Watt vs price from Sapphire HD 6790, for 130 euros a pop. Thing is I didn't see anyone using this card on a massive scale so I'm not sure if there are any other difficulties with this option.

Is my info for 6790 correct :(at stock)

I am playing with it. I am doing pooled cpu mining with mining.bitcoin.cz. I am only getting like 2.5 Mh/s from both machines combined. I changed the CPUMiner 1.0.1 algorithm slighty to test something, seemed to get results more often, but I can't really tell. I like the idea behind the crypto and computing power. Mostly the computer science behind it as opposed to actually using it. If I could get the equipment to mine faster, I would try it. After about 16 hours of pooled cpu mining, I have 0.00124921 BTC. About $0.03 cents on the current market. It's fun to play with anyway.

I've been mining since a week at 300 Mh/s. I'm planning to buy another video card and slowly expand my mining gear.

I've made 2.46 BTC and participated twice in the BTC lottery, lost 0.21 and won 0.16. :(

I'm doing partial mining as well.
I game a lot less now that it's actually costing me money to game instead of mining  :-\

I've been mining for about almost 2 weeks.  So far I'm doing about 110Mhash/s each on my two gtx470's.  I have a 6870 on the way to slap into an older rig, and I'll see how that works.

I went for it for a few days, but old 4870 is one generation too old for serious rates... Not going to upgrade just for mining.

Not to burst your bubble but you're probably going to regret it even more when difficulty increases today.

Just started today, wish I knew about this months ago. Running 5870(OC @ 950/1250) @ 390MHash/s.  Plan on using earned BTC to purchase a 2nd 5870(and another Artic Cooling Accelero Xtreme Cooler) to improve mining, haha ^_^

With the increasing difficulty, I'm kinda glad I chose to buy bitcoin instead of adding a second, third and fourth 5970.

I'm slow, although I am only running it for two - three hours a day :)

looks like with  difficulty rising it may soon become unprofitable to mine in some countries with high electricity costs. (until BTC value rises as well)

Started 2 days ago, doing around 1.3 GHash/Sec with 4x5850 (not running at full speed yet, have to improve cooling)

You may just want to buy BTC as you would invest in ounces of silver (I own both now).

i get 180mhash on stock with a 5770 just had to add -v -w 128 -f 0. the CCC util for some reason is not overclocking my card so going to have to play around with that later.

Im mining... doing about 225 m/h with my main 6830.  Hoping to add a video card to my wifes comp to start mining from there as well... plus better for her games :)

I started earlier this week on my Q6600 with a 295GTX. Needless to say I had Amazon overnight me a 6870 to replace the nVidia card ;)

I'm trying to get ufasoft running on my 24-core Xeon server, but it's giving me issues  :P

Started about a week ago, almost exclusively CPU mining since I'm running mostly low-end nVidia and a get more from the CPUs than the GPUs.  That said, I'm just setting up a couple 6970 rigs and am in the process of optimizing.  I've got a few questions but haven't hit the newbie threshold to post any questions in the relevant mining threads.  Only a couple more to go!  Currently mining at 500-800 MH/s.

I just plunked down the cash for 2x 5830. Hopefully Purolator Express gets them here by the weekend. Then I can join your esteemed ranks!

 I wish I had started a year and a half ago when I first heard of BTC mining. Oh well...split milk and all that.

I have been mining about 40%? of the time for 11 days. Received .76 bitcoins so far.
I pool with mining.bitcoin.cz as it's not practical for hobby miners to mine solo.

My setup is a single GTX460 that mines when im not playing vidya games :)

I have spare boards and psu's, as well as a 8800gtx and a hd3850 from older computers that I have started to rebuild to mine.

Given the difficulty, only btc to be mined now is by miners who already have rigs.

I am mining.  Got two 5870s running 24/7 using free electricity! 

I think it is a waste of time and energy to start minig.
Difficulty increases 50% every every two weeks and makes new hadware unprofitable.

The only way for newbies to profit by BitCoins is daytrading or longterm investments.

haha yeahhh it's not that smart to go drop a ton of money on equipment if you don't have free elec...

I did do something with questionable ethics and i honestly don't care, but i'll do anything in the name of "science" and experimentation :)

Go to Frys Electronics, buy the equipment you need to mine for some serous time, mine for 28 days and return your equipment for full price, minus the intrest you accrued on your CC.

BOOM instant profit, no investment other than elec and intrest.  That'll get you your first high end video card...

at least that's how i did it...

but i already had an amazing mobo and 1200 W psu sitting around....

not a suggestion but just a way to get things done...

First found out about this like first week of June.

Wish I had known about it earlier, but I've been running my 6970 since about the 8th when I figured out pool mining.

Sucks that the difficulty went up, I went from 2/3's of a coin just under 1/2 a coin a day, running about 380 Mhash/sec.

Even coming in at this late stage in the game should let you recoup at hardware investment costs. I'm building a new Crosshair V system with three 6970's (maybe 1.2 Ghash/sec) and I'm fairly certain that I'll break even on it and have a nice gaming system all paid for in the end if the market doesn't totally collapse between now and the end of the summer.

I was debating solo mining but I think I'm going to stick to pooled mining after the difficulty increase. And it's going to increase every two weeks, they say? The party is not yet over, but we're definitely late. Enjoy it while it lasts. :)

Yeah..I downloaded some of the software (Bitcoin,GUIminer) a day ago and set it loose, but I'm not sure if it even working. I know I have an ATI Radeon 4200 card, but not sure if it even being used.

I first found out about Bitcoin sometime during early winter, back in 2010. A friend at my university told me about it, and managed to get me interested. I put my server computer to work and mined for a while before I got too lazy about it, thinking it wasn't really worthwhile. Now I regret that decision.

Since then, I 'rediscovered' Bitcoin early this month, as the value had increased by quite a bit. I set two computers to mine, one with a 5870 and another with a 5850, but I was in a bit of a hurry to go visit my parents and attend a funeral, so I was unable to optimize the setup properly before I left town. Regardless, I can reach roughly 600 - 700 (5870 at 310 - 360, 5850 at 290 - 340) megahashes per second without a lot of optimizations, so there's that. Tomorrow I'll finally be returning to my own apartment, though, and I can start fiddling around.

I managed to set this up on 11.06.11, but there has been some downtime every now and then. Regardless, I've managed to acquire 2.5 bitcoins since then.

I'm not, don't have the proper hardware. Maybe I will in the future if I ever upgrade to a nice gaming rig.

I was planning on starting tonight, but I'm having a problem with getting diablominer to work with my mac pro...4 more posts to go...

I just started mining too (with two 5830s), but have to pay for electricity :-(

Even so, imho it's still worth mining - at least for me I can always use the equipment for actual graphics work.

I've also ascribed to having multiple sources of income. At one point, all my little streams of income amounted to a decent monthly income. It's surprising how $100-450/month on multiple monthly incomes really add up.

I opted out of corp/mainstream work and lifestyle a while ago and have never regretted it. Bitcoin mining is just another (little) stream for now.

What is that compared to an ATI Radeon 4200? My window shows the same amount of blocks as yours but only 8 connections and nothing in the display. Mine just looks..well..blank. I have a feeling that I may have set mine up incorrectly.

If you really are paranoid about those transactions, you should blur the dates and times as well. They could be used to track down these transactions on blockexplorer (http://blockexplorer.com). It wouldn't be easy, of course, but it's doable. Still, if you want to remain safe. You know. You can never know who could be out to get you.

Just started mining a couple weeks ago.  Finally got my duel non-reference 6950's set up, mining 555 Mhash/s.

I've occasionally read about Bitcoin over the past couple months on Slashdot, so yesterday I figured I'd start playing around with it.  Conveniently, I have a Radeon HD 5850 that usually sits idle.  I have just over 0.1 BTC from slush's pool after mining most of today (with another 0.1 in estimated + unconfirmed), and nearly 0.03 from being on deepbit's pool for a while last night.  Not getting rich any time soon, but I'm curious to see how this all pans out.

I'm curious how many of the hardcore miners over the past several months have blown out their video cards.  I went with the suggestion of underclocking, dropping my memory speed from 1000 Mhz to 500 Mhz and the core from 725 Mhz to 550 Mhz.  Dropping the core speed gives me a performance hit, but is that worthwhile to further keep temperatures down?  I know that excessive heat is often what kills hardware that's pushed for performance.

I'm planning to start mining this weekend.. I have a lot of computer parts laying around but I unfortunatly always favored Nvidia cards.. I've an ATX card and some fans coming from Newegg this friday so I'm going to try mining out.  Its too bad all the good cards are so hard to get.  :P

Been mining for a few days only, since the recent media articles on bitcoin.
My Nvidia 8800GTX was the shit 4 years ago, at $500-600, but it mines at only 26 MH/s, miner software are optimized only for Radeon's stream processors, not Nvidia CUDA.

I was planning to build a new PC later this year, might as well do it now, using Radeon cards this time.
I'd love to use 2-3 6990s but they are out of stock, so I'll aim for 1 GH/s instead of 2.

I know.. every card I look for is sold out everywhere.  I hope its not all bitcoin miners buying them all because the difficulty is going to go through the roof.

I'm building a mining rig now.. I already had a pretty decent gaming PC but with an Nvidia card so I am not even going to try mining with that.  Plus its got way too much CPU and hard drives I don't want to burn up.  It seems like purpose built miners where you downclock everything but the GPU to save watts is the way to go.

just bought 3 x 6990's(2000 MH/s) to start mining(haven't set it up yet), I think im too late tho' I just calculated with the difficulty increase it is going to take awhile to break even on the 3 cards .... :( plus of cause electricity costs. I would suggest to buy bitcoins instead of buying equipment for mining...

That's been said for a while now but no one takes it seriously, thus the large difficulty increase.

It seems like there would be an incentive for current miners to discourage new miners in order to slow down difficulty increases so I take all the doom and gloom predictions with a grain of salt

Actually if you take it as a "Fact" you will be a lot better off... doesn't take much to find these stats out your self....

as a matter of fact you stated a "Fact" your self with the difficulty increasing, Saying that it is still making a profit for those who have already broke even with there equipment investment, but new people buying equipment... well its a fact that it wont make you quick money and should pray that the value doesn't drop. Also it has been noted many times this spike is just a bubble... at the end of the day there wont be less miners so the difficulty will stay the same or increase, but it will never drop, I don't see why current miners who have paid there investment would want to stop(decrease the difficulty) while they are still making a slight profit after power expenses. As for buying bit coins.. If your a gambler and feel lucky then go ahead and buy them, it will make your more money than mining..

I hear you there man. I have a GTX 460 that I am getting 80Mh/s out of and a 8800 GTX that is only getting about 29Mh/s.

I ordered a 6950 for $209.99, but it wouldn't boot into Windows or Linux, I RMA'd that and it should arrive back to Newegg.com tomorrow so I am looking to get my replacement by Wednesday next week.
I also ordered a 5830 for $109.99 from Newegg.com when they were in stock, I got lucky. That one will arrive today! I am so excited. This one will replace the 8800 GTX.
I'm getting a used computer for free tomorrow from a friend that runs a computer shop which is where the 6950 will go.
I won't be replacing the GTX 460 because it is my main computer which I also use for gaming.

Then I will go from 110Mh/s combined to about 650-700Mh/s combined.

Ive been mining for about a week now properly.
Its kinda interesting to me and it is a safe way for me to learn a bit about market trading ect as I have always been interested in trading on the real world markets.

My UPS guy got here yesterday, but it came with bad news.

Pulled my shiny new Radeon out of the box, opened my case, and slammed that puppy home. Then I went to hook up the pci-e power to it and IT WASN'T THERE! Crappy Dell had no connection for pci-e power and I didn't think to look before hand  >:(  Found a nice replacement that will fit my box but now I need to come up with another $75 for it  :( In the meantime I'm mining with a Nvidia 210 which is so slow that I'd probably do better mining with a slide rule  ;D

I'm using a collection of older motherboards and video cards for mining.

I've found that my ati 4850 needs additional cooling so I bought a artic cooling vga cooler to tame it. It was running at 108 C on the the stock cooler. :(

I was mining for about a week on an older nvidia card and a core 2 duo. Just got my new video card and it's going 5 times as fast and that's without trying any tweaks.

the electricity prices are high, btc prices kinda crashed, i have only geforce graphic cards, difficulty is rising so its not looking that bright. and getting a new pc(my old one is still quite good except at mining) will cost at least 500€, so it's quite an expensive gamble i'm not willing to take.

It's an Optiplex 745 so it only has SATA connectors, no molex connectors. It's always that last little detail that gets you  :-\ The spare psu I have laying around does have a PCIe connector, but it's only 250w. Trying to mine with that and any (semi) serious card and the computer would likely burn down, fall over, and sink into the swamp  ;D

Getting about 0.02 BTC a day at 16,400 Khash/s.

I'm more of a services-sector kind of guy, so I don't really have plans to enhance my rig.

I started mining about 2 weeks ago.  I got a radeon 6850 and I get ~200M#'s.  Its okay I guess.  I make about 1btc every 3 to 4 days on Deepbit.  almost at 6 now.  I don't run it 24/7 though.  I tend to mess with settings.  I got it up to 235M# with overclocking but I had to keep the fan at 100% to keep the temp stable.  It ran hot (about 70 degrees) so I turned off the OC.  I'd rather not burn out the card.

I'm mining second week now. Didin't go crazy and buy highend mining rig for this, just using the spare clock cycles of my gaming pc. It gets ~400 Mhash/s with oc'd 6950@6970 radeon. The market is too risky for me to invest a dime for except electricity, but I made about 100 usd at first week while mining BTC. Now the system is pointed towards namecoins, those seems to give better returns with current trading rates.

Based on the exponential growth in difficulty, one would have to assume that quite a lot of newbies are mining.

Yes certainly a lot of new folks have gotten in the game, likely without considering the costs, difficulty increases, and volatility in exchanges, looking to make quick $.
 I'm doing it for fun with very little startup costs (had a bunch of spare parts/ old gaming rigs) and if there is some money in it down the road that will be a nice bonus.

That and existing miners adding to their rigs. Getting into mining is like trying to open up a burger joint with your friends next to a McDonald's. Better have the goods. And that includes iron guts. But don't immediately move to discouragement. Look at namecoin mining as well.

Remember though that higher prices brings more miners which leads to greater difficulty yielding less BTC which means you make less..........     :-\

that went away and helped buy a 6970.
it's doing the average for a 6970.  just underclocked the memory.

have tried 3 pools and the first 2 were fine, the one i'm on now, i'll hold on untill the round is over then i'm pretty sure i'll head back to one of the first two :)

i mine about 90M with GPU only (ati 5770 on mac), it not worth mining with my CPU even if it is a Quad Xeon 2.8ghz, it go less than 10M so why mining...?

I don't understand how people can go over 150 or 200M with that card... i've tried installing Linux without success on my mac :(

As far as my mining goes, I've been trying to push my 5770's overclock. At 960 MHz on the core, I can get a bit over 200 Mhash/s if I use the -f1 flag or similar in addition to -v and -w128.

I learned about crypto-mining through the hardware enthusiast community.  I stopped playing video games because my GPU has better things to do now :)

Started mining 4 days ago.  Mining at 590/mh  and have another GPU of the same caliber on the way, so will be doubling my hashing rate in the next 2 days.  Really want to get the ball rolling on litecoin though, i hear its worth doing that, more profitable than bitcoin for GPU miners

I'm also mining just for the fun of it with CPU+GPU not even at max. (around 2MH/s), it's not for the amount of bitcoins but I understand this helps secure and distribute the network by putting my little grain of sand, so the miner is my new background app on the PC like the clock but much more social ;)

I mine altcoins with Middlecoin on my 270X (wanted a 280X but couldn't find one) and a CPU in a different machine. I figure the energy isn't wasted if I'd be heating anyway.

Last year I mined BTC with slush, mostly on CPUs. I made about a bitnickel before I couldn't complete shares and didn't need the heat. Actually, I still have about ~0.0027 that I'll probably never be able to claim because I can't mine the balance of a bitcent.

Offtopic rant: this is my third time typing this post. The first time I got automatically logged out. The second time I apparently hadn't waited long enough between posts. This time I'm copying my post before attempting again.

I mine with several.  My first miner was my original NES.  I used to play Super Mario Bros 3 in college on this baby.  I modded it similarly to retrominer.

I also have a modded XBox overclocked to 2.718GHz.  I cool it by immersing it in Fluorinert with a peltier junction on the CPU and a impeller forcing the fluid over the heat sink.  The Fluorinert is circulated through our 3,000 gallon cistern to dissipate heat.

Been studying everything that's tied to the financials of bitcoin, from how it will effect the global economy to how I'll end up claiming it on my taxes.
At the moment this is an experiment/hobby. Am I hoping to realize enough gain to deal with the pain of a large taxable event..heck yeah.

I'm new to this just over a month since I made the choice to buy the equipment for my first rig and only been mining about 3 weeks now. my first rig specs below running BAMT off a thumb drive, initially I had it in an open air case but about to try and fit it into a milk crate with extenders to help maintain a lower temperature. My second rig just got here yesterday and currently only has 2 of the R9 280x gigabyte cards in it hashing at 700-720 each. I'm waiting on some ASUS cards that are supposed to hit around 740 or so to finish out the rig. I've also fired up cudaminer on my gtx780 in my regular comp and it pulls around 400-600khs oddly enough this is only when I have an online game patching screen opened in the back ground. If I don't have it up before I start it it only hashes at around 140. So I've got some work to do to figure out why. Any thoughts would be great.

Started mining BTC whilst it was still profitable with a mixture of cards..whatever I could get my hands on...5850's...5870's etc...

Then moved on to altcoins being mined on 5xGigabyte 7950's...totally the best cards I ever spent money on - £150 on ebay and a solid 650Kh/s with minimal tweaking. Now they are going for stupid money on ebay, so thats the end of that !

R9 280Xs are the next card of choice for me. Not sure which brand yet as there is still unbelievably little stock in the UK, so it will be whatever I can get. Just built an open frame 'carpenters PC'  :D so will be filling that with 6 of these bad boys.

I'm not even thinking about my electricity bill. I'm justifying this at the moment by what I spend on electricity, I'm saving on gas for the heating  of my flat :P

Not only in the US - worldwide. I bet AMD are scratching their heads, this might be the best thing that happened to them since who knows when, Thunderbird or something.

BTW, why most rigs are open frame? The conventional wisdom in my old PC building days was that the airflow inside an aluminum box reduces the heat considerably compared to components just sitting outside with their own fans.

I heard AMD sold off all their chip making facilities and outsourced it, which is causing the shortages.

And I know what you mean, I would much prefer a well designed case with proper airflow. Its mostly about card spacing and number of cards. My server has an expensive case (with 8 pci mounts rather than 7), an expensive Gigabyte UD7 m/b with 8 pci slots and can still only run 3 cards (to allow spacing of one PCI slot between them). It could run 4 but they just get too hot.

My open rig uses a cheap Gigabyte UD3 m/b and will support 6 cards on risers, all nicely spaced for cooling. Due to the noise though its going to have to go in my loft, which is freezing in winter and hot in the summer  :-\ Plus I can't use the argument of it heating my flat for free. Oh well !

Yeah I thought so to but the pools I use register it at those rates as well with hardly any errors. For me all I'm doing is starting up the planetside 2 to the point where the patcher has the play button on it. I've read in a similar article that the same can be done withstar trek onlines patcher. It doesn't always seem to work sometimes I have to close cudaminer and restart it to get to the 400+ hash rate. But once it's there it seems pretty stable and i just leave the ps2 launchpad up in the back ground. When I get home I can take a screen shot and try and throw it on here.

Here's the link to the thread where they guy says the same thing happens with STO patcher. As I said I'm still new so for all I know there is a simple setting somewhere I can change to make the same thing happen without the patcher running.

I've been mining since 3 weeks now. Started with LTC, DOGE and nowTIPS. Got two R9 290's running hashrate (WU) of 1600k/hash. Consuming power: 700watts. Never tried undervolting or whatsoever, but since the winters are cold here I can use some electrical heating lol.

Ditto on the 2 R9 290's - I have 2 as well in my room of all places and boy do they get HOT! Lol, my vent has been closed all winter and it stays a "cozy" 80 degrees in there. I have them maxed at 85 degrees and 75% fan speed, also getting around 1575kh/s with the both of them.

I am mining 2 weeks now, as a test. Using old Radeon card. For further tests making on the baisis of an old PC a 'holder' for a AMD R9 290. Needed a new PSU of 850 w (want to put two cards). Waiting for a extension (riser) cable for PCE-e... unforeseen problem - card does not fit an old PC!
Did not try undervolting or overclocking. An ASIC would be better. Who knows what ASIC to buy right now? - since calculators show that to start mining in a month is almost useless... even cannot break even.

Running 2x280x in my regular computer since 3 weeks back. They run very hot, even with the loudly fans, so I'm thinking about building some dedicated rig for it with better cooling when I return home from vacation.

i think i made like .004 BTC after like 2 months so i gave up. i can't imagine it's gotten any easier to mine considering the way bitcoin is designed.

I just ordered my first 290X to augment the 2x7970s and one 6950. AMD prices are only going up and nVidia is only going down. Scrypt based currencies are single-handedly making AMD love the market right now.

What rates are you guys getting with your cards, and on which coins?

Been mining for about a month now, just about to finish my first dedicated openair-rig with three 280x and my old 6870, handbuilt.
Keeping two 280x's busy with Worldcoins atm and playing around/learning with the rest. Gonna try solo mining for the first time tonight with Giftcoin.
Will probably expand the rig with another 280x within a week or two.

What power supply are you using? I have a 1300W EVGA that I ended up picking for the 10 year warranty, and it seems like it could handle 3 290X cards right now.

I've been mining for about a month - as a hobby and learning experience rather than to make any actual money from it.

I've used Block Erupters and today got a couple of Antminer U1's. These have left me taking all day working out how to get the Antminers and BE's to mine on the same Ubuntu 13.10 32bit machine but I have finally managed it. Hopefully they will continue to work when the system is rebooted too!

As I said I am using it as a learning curve and don't really expect to make anything using them. I am learning loads about linux along the way - compiling builds etc.

Thanks foader, I figured it out last night. It's weird, the games (I tried both) do seem to affect cudaminer, although I didn't get a drastic increase. Which switches are you using to launch it? It was hard to make it run because it was crashing a lot. But then it went to a bit over 70 MH - before it was a bit over 60 (it's an old 550 Ti). Weird. 140 to 600 is kind of spectacular though. I've noticed the Sony game was installing some additional graphics components, maybe it makes a big difference for newer cards.

Been mining for about a month started with Litecoin and AMD6870, then added and old AMD4770. Then the pool I was in got too many Ghashers so it wasnt good for me and my low setup.
Yesterday got 1 Antminer U1 setup and now working in Bitcoin, probably get more when I can afford.

Have been mining for a bit over a month. Mostly prime coin and protoshares on a few VPS's I own. It was fairly successful until the last couple of weeks when the difficulty went up and I was only making half the amount of coins as when I started. Just started setting up my GPU mining. Have a GTX 780 and old GTX 680, GTX 670 and GTX 580 not doing anything most of the time. Don't have much time to play games anymore.

Dont think spending money on mining is any good right at the moment.. There is number of opportunities like cex.io, and investment in mining companies..  ;)

I started mining with a block eruptor a couple months ago.  I wondered if I'd make my money back that day or if it would take a few years.   I had no idea what the difficult was or anything else .... which is why I wanted to start doing it.  Can't figure it out by reading about it, the motivation just isn't there.

Only mining for a few days. Mainly Quark in a pool (with limited success) but have tried solo mining Earthcoin from the wallet (with no success as yet).

With DOGE falling back to "sane" profitability levels, those who are mining with CPU will be better off with CPU-only coins.

There are currently Primecoin (XPM), Quark (QRK) and Protoshares (PTS), mostly.

MemoryCoin is not really a CPU coin but it has some special features that makes GPU mining less interesting.

Well I went to that one image site this morning and uploaded the screen shots while getting ready for work. When I got to work I can't find them on the site. So I'll try again when I get back home and see if i can knock it all out at once. Now the 600 isn't the norm i's what it spikes to on occasion. Normally it's running around the 400-480 level. I do have a newr card though it's a evga ftw 780. As for switches I don't have any set as of yet. Most of my friends said that the rates I am getting now are real good for and nvidia card and said they wouldn't mess with it to much. This is on my gaming machine so I don't want to mess up the card. You also said MH and I'm only getting Kh doing scrypt mining so that might be a big difference to.

Been mining on and off since beginning of 2013 when you could still get BTC with GPUs. ASICS took over there.

Then mined LTC but the diff is so high its better to mine alts and exchange for BTC like you're doing.

I've been mining for a few months. Nothing big, just small scale. Started off with a couple dozen USB block erupters. Also have a BFL @ 8GH/s. Currently looking to get new hardware, which kinda sucks since my current hardware has only just paid for itself. My plan is to buy some new gear and then sell my old stuff. This way the "cost" of the old gear is lessended and I would have made a profit from it.

I have been mining Protoshares (http://protoshares.com/) and Primecoin (http://primecoin.org/). Both try to be CPU only. Besides being used as a currency these shares will automatically give you a share in all distributed autonomous comanies who honor Invictus Innovations social contract (http://invictus-innovations.com/protoshares/). All holders of protoshares together get an automatic 10% share in every new company.

I started litecoin mining with my $70 NVIDIA, which made pennies.
I then got a $200 ATI card, and while the online calculators and specs were saying $4.50 a day, I got $1.50 a day, possibly because my power supply was not sufficient.

My most successful mining so far has been through CEX.io website, which allows hosted Bitcoin mining. It's simple and I don't have to worry about setup. Plus I can compound my earnings as often as I want.

I'm now trying the Bitmain AntMiner S1. I hit a few snags and still working to get it started. I'm hoping to get some help here.

Have been reading about bitcoin for a while, but only started mining a month ago.
I was fortunate enough to pick up a KNCMiner Jupiter in the 1st week in December.

It's been mining perfectly since setup. I would have liked it have it set up sooner, but the device has more than paid for itself in a month.

Alright I'll try it again. That was a pain in the butt. But It finally loaded to where you can see them. The first image is with the patcher in the back ground hashing along at mid 400s. The second one I've turned the patcher off and it slows down to 180s. I turn it back on in the third and it goes back up to 400s. The only changes made to the computer between screen shots is the patcher being turned on and off no other programs or settings were touched. This doesn't work on my laptops NVidia 460m card.

Just Doge and LTC at the moment. Tried getting in on a couple of new alt coins during launch.

Using my gaming PC which has a 7950, which I run between 650kh/s (max range without crazy temps)  and 550kh/s (normal range, really undevaulted)

Not really serious about mining though, just using it as a way to get a hold of some coins, so I can play around with trading.

I am not a total newbie but just heard about btc's few months ago. I am mining with CPU therefore XPM since it's one of the few coins you can mine with CPU.

I almost got into mining a year or so ago, but never quite got around to it - wish I had since BTC has gone up massively since then!

I finally started mining just before Christmas, on a couple of Nvidia 780s, an R9 290 and some CPUs.  I've been mining Quark on the CPUs until today, now I've switched them all over to Particle so fingers crossed that one takes off!  On the GPUs I started off with LTC, then switched over to Hashcows / Middlecoin with a couple-of-days foray into OGC when it launched, as much so I could be involved at the launch of a coin (and do a little solo mining) as anything else.

I'm hoping that Quark picks up in value this month, as I've converted the 0.3 or so BTC I've got from the switching pools so far into Quarks.  Not big money, but a reasonable chunk of what I "invested" at the beginning (I already had the Nvidia GPUs but bought the 790 just for mining).

Living in Australia, not sure if mining at this speed justify electricity bill but Im just giving it a go! :)

I was initially playing about with a few block erupters and got interested enough to buy one of the Technobit 24GHs miners.  Neat little piece of specialised hardware really - I get the feeling that something delivered on schedule and performing as advertised is something of a rarity so I was satisfied there.  Might even ROI which is more of a bonus really.

Also have a 7950 running along at about 700KHs - should have bought more when they were available I guess.

According to https://litecoin.info/Mining_Hardware_Comparison you should be able to squeeze out some more khashes using the right settings.

I have two rigs with:

3 x XFX 7950 each. Doing about 550kh/s per card. Sometimes on new coin launches, when diff is still low, I also setup some DigitalOcean droplets to mine at the start.

My top grafic card that i bought in 2010 - now not so strong for mining, hell, i wish i knew about mining in 2010-2011.
however, i am started mining some day ago and i hope to upgrade my pc with moneys from mining, hope that my pc doesn't die from 24/7 mining. lol
don't have extra money to do upgrade immediatly, so only hope old card will work until i get new card.

Yes, late to the game, but it's also a pretty good investment for my personal computer part situation: Instead of a bunch of medium cards, I got an R9 290x. So even if I make nothing, Ill have a brand new graphics card that blows my old Nvidia 560 out of the water. My friend did the same thing, and we're mining together.

As an early adopter, I would simply suggest any newbie here to buy or mine at least 1 BTC. I'm pretty sure it will get you at least a nice sports car in a few years.

I've read a lot on alt coins and mining techniques and can help anyone trying to start. I've been trading and buying altcoins too which has been fun. Just somewhat risky at times but hey we all know this is a risky biz.

No idea about how serious or scammish it is, but there's something that must be kept in mind in the CPU/GPU/FPGA vs ASIC question:

Imagine a new altcoin coming up (think DOGE*), but with a slightly modified scrypt algo (think Jane...), or a new one (i.e. XPM, QRK...)

• CPU/GPU miners just need to update the mining software,
• FPGA miners need to reprogram their FPGA,
• ASIC miners need to replace/upgrade (at least partly) their hardware!

* not implying that DOGE is the alt coin of the future...

At the end of the day GPU rigs for "generic" mining and ASICs for "specialized" mining is prob the way to go.

Just started to mine with one 7970. It's not much but definitely way better than nVidia cards.

I would like to be able to mine but the electricity bill simply becomes too damn high. I wish there was a way for all of us to mine together, however low of a hash rate as long as a minimum was met, and received a good amount of coins.

I suppose that would be too effortless but I'm sure if another successful alt-coin was to be produced a more communal delivery method would benefit.

I'm doing a bit of mining, Alt-coins more for me since i don't have the GPU power. Currently i have 3 laptops going fulltime. and my rig which is just a nicer gaming pc.
i only have a gtx 550 though so i can't scrypt mine yet, i'm stuck with CPU mining. but soon i'll get some 6950's. I also just picked up a block erupter for a hell of it.
and i also have a few cloud Miners, so i have like 7 miners total. (only bringing in about 15DATA coin every 25hr.) i'm hoping to trade them for something else and work my way up.
i bought into bitcoin a few weeks ago and got like .05 (nothing crazy) took it to BTC-E and started trading around for primex (XPM) and got up to .07. i just got .1 more. trading is where it's at!


but yeah mining is cool, i was doing primecoin. now i'm doing data. i might switch to prime again or something else. Litecoin is the way i'll most likely go when i get the 6950'sBTC 8)

I'm mining @ 2350 Khs.  Been Doing lotto and dogecoin lately, thinking about mining RPC soon.  Lottocoin is easy to make and sell.  Quick twenty bucks a day after electricity and fees and stuff.  Not sophisticated enough to manipulate these small coin markets like others who spend 8-10 BTC do.  But they keep the coins profitable for smaller fish.  20 bucks a day ain't a lot.. but $600 a month ain't so bad.  Hope the joke coins keep coming!

Started mining sometime in 2012, but have had a break because the processing power was needed for animation rendering.

I've picked up mining again lately, with an increasing interest also in primecoin.

Other than that I'm thinking of adding BTC as payment option for a service I'm developing. We'll see how that turns out, though.

Im actively mining altcoins for about 3 weeks now.
I have an 7950 at ~560mhz
Im mining new altcoins and use middlecoin and [Suspicious link removed] as fallback.

Most of the mining websites have a getting started page that shows you the command line for cgminer.  Also reading the readme file of cgminer will give you some information about the parameters / flags and potential values. Tinker with it. It looks like you might not have any workers setup you do that from the hosts webpage . you need to log in with your account and setup a new worker that workers information needs to coded into your cgminer start file or *.bat file that holds all your parameters.

I'd love to tinker with it if I knew what to tinker with... I've been reading this forum now for hours and not finding anything comprehensive in terms of follow 1, 2, 3, etc to get started or to know if I'm actually mining or not.

all i get in the cgminer window is things like:

new block detected on network before longpoll

or

Stratum from pool 0 detected new block

I have no clue what this means.

Workers? How do I create workers? I read about it and all it said was what you said, create a worker, but where do I set that up, wheres the documentation to help me create one.

creating a worker is straight forward you click the link  and input a user name and password it is not setup by default

I been mining off and on for about 9 months. Sadly I had to do a refund on a day 1 ship of jupiter first run...

One hand (o/) up for newbianism.  :) I bought 2 7950 for starters. I also have 2 7850 on my gaming rig. What would be good altcoin pool to start with ~2Mh/s rate? I have also one unpowered riser 1xto16x. Is it safe use one 7850 with riser and 2 7950 on mb one on rig?

I mined back in September, stopped till the new year, and started again after my coin matured for about .5btc!
My 6850 is about to crap out though (visual artifacts when pushing it a little).  Don't know if I'm going to go for another radeon or geforce; that'll decide my fate...

I've been mining for two months and I get 750Kh/s with a 280x. I like mining alt coins but it take a long time to achive a minimal amount of bitcoins.  ;)

Have been mining since xmas.
Setup two machines with 6x7950 each, 600kh/s each card.
Focusing on Coinye at the moment, let's see if they will be worth something when trading will be available...

About a month here. At this point I'm doing it mostly for the fascination and education, and I'll be holding onto what I can pull in for now.

im new on the forums and mining since about a week ago ive been mining with my geforce gtx550 at around 50mh witch i know is basicly a wast of time lol. i have purchased a Brand New RED Fury USB miner ASIC 2.4 - 2.9 GH/s from ebay i am just waiting for it to turn up witch should be in the next day or so.

im still checking out software for mining and looking into other pools im currently using slush's pool.

I've been  mining for several weeks  with 1000 kh/s.
Focusing on Earth Coin at the moment.
I suggest people to mine Earth, Ron Paul  and Doge altcoins because i think they have future.

my BFL 30GH/s arrived the week before Thanksgiving, Mid November, I logged into eligius and got the hasing going using BFG.  After 36 hours of mining I had earned .023 BTC and immediately sold on ebay for $400 profit @$1800.00.   I don't want this to become yet another horrific BFL story but just wish I had listened to a lot of the advice on this forum back in June when I had ordered it.   Many said, Just Buy BitCoins, and I balked and ignored.  Who knew?!?!   

I thought about mining another Alt 256 but didn't have the confidence in the others to make it worth it IMO.    I went ahead just bought 4.1 BTC and invested in 1.5BTC into LTC, PPC, XPM, and NXT to spread it around a bit.  Good luck everyone!

I've been for about a week and I'm trying to learn all I can so I can properly explain/recommend everything to my customers before we begin accepting BTC at our store. I have the extra challenge of doing this all on Macs so I ought to be pretty well versed when it's time to write the FAQ. I think there will be plenty of private digital currencies coming along from the likes of Apple and Amazon, etc, but I am sure they will not have the anonymity benefit of BTC and so doomed to be "digital gift cards" in the long run.

I'm very optimistic about the concept and can't wait to put it to practice further by fulling supporting it worldwide commercially.

I found out about litecoins a month ago and started mining them.
I'm also mining fedoracoins just because I like the concept of using them to "tip" people.

I'm interested almost exclusively in Litecoin, was going to purchase 2x 5.4MH/s rigs last week, but I happened upon this forum and found out that there 'might' be some ASIC light coin miners on the horizon, which would be much more preferable. I was thinking of pre-ordering from alpha-t but I hesitated and I think the pre-order window is closed. Rumors of a scam scared me off...There's another thread in the altcoin section of this forum started by user jasinlee that might be promising. I'm really interested in the hosted ASIC's they are suggesting for sale, I'd be looking to get into the 32MH/s 32 chip offering they mentioned. jasinlee if you happen to see this let me know, I'm a 'newbie' so I can't even PM anyone! Never been on a forum with restrictions like this, but I suppose there is a reason for it!?

A FAQ is a great idea, as most of the Mac OS mining support out there is piecemeal and all over the place. While my current mining rigs run Xubuntu, I've tinkered with Mac mining setups just as a way to play with old hardware I've got lying around.

If you're mining with a machine with nvidia hardware, take a look at the newly-released Mac OS build of cudaminer, courtesy of N@Limitt over at cryptoedge.com. You'll crank out a much better hashrate that way, but keep an eye on heat as it'll tax your hardware a lot more than others, too (HWMonitor is a good tool to track temps).

Otherwise, Asteroid, a GUI frontend for cgminer, is a nice work-in-progress and super easy to get up and running.

Just started cpu mining less than a week ago...started with q2c coin

Tried once with CGminer, started to hog lots of RAM and CPU and so I had to kill it. Haven't mine ever since then.

Started GPU mining 3 month ago with a single 7950. Now I am at 5 Mh/s and can't stop building more rigs.

Guess it's an obsession.

Great to see so many newbie miners... its good for the network plus there's loads of altcoins these days too. The altcoin market is only going to get bigger too.

There will be losers but from time to time there will be altcoin winners.

All these altcoins are very confusing for a beginner like myself, hard to sapparate the good from the bad

I did the math,  mining BTC's isn't worth the cost of electricity?  So why is it being done?

I've been mining for a year with a milk crate rig powered by three Sapphire 7950's. It's been fun and very interesting.

If they don't have asics people mine alt coins, mostly scrypt based,  they can still be profitable.

Plus, some users support the ideology even if it's not too profitable.

Not newbie, in crypto for over a year, have been mining for less than 20 hours on shitty Nvidia, but it has mined so small amount, that I've decided to buy some altcoins instead of mining.

 mining since mid dec '13, i've tried as many alts as i can, "diversifying my holdings", + has a good learning benefit: separate the seed from the chaff! (but sometimes the chaff is worth more in the short run)
   i think what weare doing here is revolutionary

would you mind sharing your settings? i can only get ~670 khps in linux, ~570 khps/windoz (visiontek r-280x) though i think it might be the PCIEx16 slots/mobo i have are kinda old - they are v.2.0....

I mine a little bit, but really more for fun than anything else since i get maybe 280khps. But still i make a few coins lol

I Prefer trading over mining

I'm not an expert on this, just sharing my experience. I have 2 different models of HIS 280x and one hashes at 730 and runs cooler, the other is at 620-ish and lower and runs hotter. Funny thing is the slower card is a higher end model I believe (1000 core clock vs 850)...  I tried them both on 2 different Windows 7 boxes, one with an old MB, one with newer. I ordered 2 more of the faster ones.... Weird because the cards are damn near identical.

The faster one - fan runs at 56%:

i intend on shutting down my few rigs once i get brave enough to try trading.

i used to mine bitcoin when i still newbie, that's a lot fun to mining at the time.
but after that, many ASIC monster released and destroy our previous hashrate, difficulty increase and i decide to sell my mining hardware.
Never mining again after that, i prefer trading over mining
