Title: Did I do wrong or right ?
Post by: smho_16 on September 12, 2016, 07:59:27 PM
I sold almost all my coins today for about 200 USD (that's what I had in my electrum wallet) and have very few coins sitting on my hardware wallet. I want to build a medium-high end gaming PC and this money is need for me to buy it. Did I do wrong that I sold a high amount of bitcoins about 0.35 to achieve my goal ? I am also happy that I am near fulfilling my goal but also sad as maybe the price of bitcoin skyrockets soon after I did this.

What ever I am the person who wants to achieve my goals no matter the cost so f it whatever the case with the price of bitcoin.

I bought a cellphone with bitcoin last year when the price was in the doldrums. it's now the world's most expensive cellphone.

it's a good phone but it still pisses me off when I look at it. If you want your computer and had no alternative then enjoy it all the same.

You'll regret many things in your life, but if you don't want that to happen, don't do anything. Stuff happens. I've missed out on the thousand-dollar iBuyPower holo while investing in CS:GO, as well as the Titan Holo. But guess what? Good stuff happens, just like bad stuff. I built a computer when Bitcoin was stagnant at near 500, and it's now 600. Sure, it's not a big price rise, but it's a good pc.
Do what you like.

No I don't think so. You've used it for your fun and happiness and remember it's a digital currency not a real one If you think about bitcoins price will go high in future and keep holding it it's worthless because money you've in your hand today worth more than in you'll have it in future.

if you thing that it really give you a good profit then you did it right but if you booked lost then it is not a good decision because you can hold it for some time and when the price increase then you can sell it in a good price.

didn't buy a cellphone but i spent many times my money to buy or to pay online services when the price was relatively low comparing to the next hours/days' ... it pisses me off but i forget and pass, then i redo the same thing over :P

@OP if you have a dream go for it, the price may increase or may stuck in this level for months and the life is short so go for it  ;)

I've been toying with the thought of spending a good portion of my bitcoins on laptops, cell phones and other electronics but I'm just such a saver. I've spent barely any bitcoins in my entire time here because I just love collecting them and seeing a new 'all time high' in my wallet. If the Canadian Dollar starts to climb I may be more inclined to spend some of my coins but for now it's HODL. If we see an ATH I, again would be more inclined to spend some. I would never spend over 20% of my coins though unless I absolutely HAD to to survive.

If you made a profit, then I don't see any problem with selling. You can always buy some back later if the price drops. There's really no right or wrong answer.

It's fine, nothing wrong with that, atleast you now can appreciate and use the fruit of bitcoin... Never hesitate to do that if you need it, what's the use of your bitcoin if you would just keep it and you are hungry or you are craving to buy something that you really want or you really need... Besides, I am thinking that you buy that computer and will be using it as your workhorse right?  :)

With that "maybe Bitcoin will rise soon" mindset, you will never be able to cash out any amount of your coin. Because, even if we rise up to 800$, but with the mindset of "What if I sell my coins now, but tomorrow, there's another major increase? Oh nooo, I will not sell it just yet and wait for some more time." And then the loop goes on and on whenever you want to sell your coins.

I think what you did is only right. Pretty sure that you got those Bitcoins with a price less than 600$. If so, then you even earned a little amount because your timing was right.

there's nothing wrong as long your needs is fulfilled, you want computer so go buy it even your bitcoin will only worth 200USD (if I were I would sell it a little higher to be honest LOL),sometimes i'm exchanging my bitcoin to fiat and suddenly price rising that make me feeling regret but I know that regretting this price rising is pointless so it's fine

You used it for a purpose so there's nothing wrong about it and besides it's your desire and goal. Money is just a thing.

Sold money can be earned again so why worry.

Also there's no instant skyrocket in price of bitcoin so still you will not missed the train.

Hey OP..
you did correct whatever you did... the needs and happiness are more important then money. bitcoin price may increase in future. but life is all about present. no one can say about future. you got a good rates for your coins at this time. and I think you did obviously correct..
bitcoin can be collected again.

I'm confused and not sure if I fully understand.

No. he didn't sold high number of coins only for 200$.. he just sold only 0.35BTC for 200$ I think he sold it current price.. he said he sold high amount. and 0.3BTC may be high for him.

No, you did very good, you know we earn because we want to facilitate our-self, and if we earn and never come true our wishes so i think thats all are boring, you know we play gambling because of fun and enjoy the time, even we know that gambling is total risky and 100% chances to lose our amount, so don't worry what you did and enjoy the time.

What is the other purpose of money if not for buying things?
Price may skyrocket, that a fact but you just cant keep thinking about it all the time, that may drive anybody mad... One thing is having bitcoins as a savings for the future and the other is having a great rig to play with. It is important to have some goals, just make one more for yourself now.

the only thing wrong here is that you should have first looked to see if you could find some place that you could buy what you need directly with bitcoin and then if you couldn't find any place then you should have sold and use the fiat.

well. bitcoin is money and money is there to be spent. so i think in a way you did right and you shouldn't even think about it now. but you should always keep something in bitcoin and if bitcoin is your investment then try to spend your money not your investment.

Dude, you're in a situation that hold Bitcoin and wait for higher prices won't affect you. If you were in a situation like a trader, a miner or someone else who's dependant and move or accumulate lot of coins based in your job and so on, it could affect, like somebody here who sold 50BTC in the lower period of 2015 for 1/4 of the actual value. His coins were results of his investments and by fear be sold.. So That''s a huge mistake.

Well if you already achieved to  build a high end gaming pc then theres no need  to regret since you benefited with it even you  sold them at a cheaper price but we could not actually avoided  the emotion of  a little bit worried  or regretting because we know that bitcoin price would rise and  possibly you would even buy more 2x high end  computer when the time comes.

I think you are wrong. if it is your last bitcoin, but you have a desire to buy something. I think you need a little patience to wait for prices to rise, or better to take the risk by growing it. because when you can grow it more is better, so you will not regret it, has sold everything and did not have any more.

If you needed money that you made right decision. After searching some thing on internet, I saw that prices for bitcoins are higher then for dollars. Also with dollars you can find good promo and discount.
You will make 0.35 again, don`t you worry about it, you did what you have to, its better then to borrow money and they give it back. Also I advise you if you make some money in real life, put in bitcoins, then you will make up what you gave now.
Never regret for things you did, if you need good computer and you made enough bitcoins for that, you need to be happy.

Split the .5 btc and let the other rise for when it does make a bit of profit - and still be back in the game its what I would be doing.. but we cant really dictate price obviously.

Well I wouldn't worry to much because you have hold these bitcoins to spend one day which has come in your life in something useful.

If you have sold yesterday then today the price has changed (-$30) so I think you were pretty lucky selling at a higher rate, money is to be spared to spend later, but if you are bitcoin addicted then you soon will buy bitcoin for sure.

It may be unfashionable to admit it, but Bitcoin is the last thing I'd sell to buy major items. I spend it on bits and bobs but no more. The last major electronic item I bought was paid for by selling off my old ones. That felt very satisfying and leaves me unemotional about future BTC price explosions.

I guess it was not wrong. if you have to sell bitcoin that you have the price is quite expensive, I think it is enough, although there is a sense that you are not satisfied of having missed the highest price. but I feel that it is still profitable because you can sell it when prices are rising. you just need to collect the coins again and wait until the price went up and resell. nothing is certain in the world of coin

There's nothing wrong with doing what you want with your money/bitcoins in my opinion. I'm sure you thought about it, weighed your options with your goals and decided that using your bitcoins to help you get what you wanted was the right thing to do for you.

Different people with different goals/priorities in the same situation as you may or may have done something different, but either way, there's nothing wrong with doing what you want with your money/bitcoin.

it really depends on your situation.

for example if i were you i would have used my money in the bank that is lying around to buy what i needed. it was only 200 USD afterall.

but in case i am in need of money and there is no other way of summoning that money, i would start liquidating my investments which is mostly bitcoin.

If you have sold yesterday then today the price has changed (-$30) so I think you were pretty lucky selling at a higher rate, money is to be spared to spend later, but if you are bitcoin addicted then you soon will buy bitcoin for sure.

Correct, we should  not only worry on the negative side that bitcoin might  increase its price tomorrow  there still had the chance that you sold them at a exact time since bitcoins price is unpredictable it might rise or go low. As long you bought something useful with your bitcoin its always a good thing after all.

I think everyone has their thoughts about selling and also for what and which point.

I am planning to sell all 0.6 bitcoins that I have come October. There's a special occasion coming up that needs some extra money. I would have to sell it whatever the price by October will be. I don't know how I'd feel by then. Maybe I'll just start from scratch again repeat the cycle that I started just a few months ago.

I want to sell 0.12 bitcoins on localbitcoins.com. I am just waiting for the price to rise a bit more than $610 so I can make more profit because I need to use the cash.

I think you are nagging yourself because deep down you understand that gaming in general is a waste of time, and buying a PC just for playing games would likely be a waste of money as well. But what's done is done. If that helps bring you peace of mind, just imagine that you didn't sell your coins in order to buy a PC, something tangible, but simply lost them all while gambling at some online casino. Or, still better, make yourself believe that something like this really happened.

It is a good thing that you fulfilled one of your goal. this is a task of yours so you dont need to ask by others because you have your own decision. you should do simple task first to get your all goal done. until you reach dream come true.

well we all have to cash out sometime, whether it is a partial cash out or complete but as long as you are investing your money and you have no other money so you need to spend you have to cash out.

but it would have been better if people like OP could just spend the bitcoin directly and bought what they wanted directly with that instead of selling to fiat and then buying.

I can understand your way of thinking. At the very beginning I was exactly like that. I was solely interested in piling up my coin stash and refused to spend any of them. I still don't spend any of my coins, but I do this. If I want to buy something in Bitcoin, then I convert fiat to Bitcoin, and then spend the coins. That way I never have to touch my own stash. ;D

if you need money to buy something ASAP then it is fine to sell your BTC at any price IMO.
Don't beat yourself up over it with thought that if you waited then maybe price would be 2x higher or something.
Believe me, it is not worth it. I experienced that too, when my SDD broke and I needed a replacement.

Only time will tell if you did wrong, but if you ask me it is a good idea because if you need something the current price seem to be a good price to sell. Sure you may miss out 20/30 dollar if the prices goes back to 650 but perhaps you find a deal where you save 50 dollar on your purchase.

Either way don't feel bad about it, and enjoy your gaming pc.

I think you have exactly the wrong timing at the moment.. Bitcoin is still in a longterm uptrend and hasn't broken through the lower resistance consistently to break the uptrend. I expect the price to start going towards 700-800 again in the coming months.

It won't be as bad as some of the examples here where stuff was bought with bitcoin at 200usd, bit it may still hurt you in the end.

On the other hand, if you need the cash, you need the cash and you should stand behind your decision.

Personally, I don't think you made a mistake at all.
If you want to build this PC, and needed the money, go ahead and do it!
You only live once in this life. Build your computer, and enjoy the time you have with it!
Even if bitcoin doubled, how much would you lose? A couple hundred dollars?
Your time and enjoyment are worth more than that IMO.  ;D
If you are worried about Bitcoin going up, save some money, and buy some more coin.

The bitcoin market price wasn't $200 on September 12th. Did you get $200 per coin or $200 for everything?

I think what you did is right as long as you can buy back before the bitcoin market price goes up.

At least you should consider what you are buying when you use your coins. If you are just spending your coins on silly items, then you should reconsider. But if you are spending it on important items like food or parts for your projects that could earn more money, then spending your bitcoins is worth it.

yes you did because selling now is a very bad idea, never sell when after a dump there is a long stagnation phase, i think it indicate a pump that is incoming, sell only after a pump is almost done, and it's hard to know yes but you can usually tell if after the dump that will happen

I think you are wrong. if it is your last bitcoin, but you have a desire to buy something. I think you need a little patience to wait for prices to rise, or better to take the risk by growing it. because when you can grow it more is better, so you will not regret it, has sold everything and did not have any more.

If anything why not do both lol.

Split the .5 btc and let the other rise for when it does make a bit of profit - and still be back in the game its what I would be doing.. but we cant really dictate price obviously.

if it can do both good. but you can see the case of the OP, he had bitcoin is not too much, while he wants to build gaming PC which of course it requires greater funding. so the best option is to wait to grow it or wait for prices to rise. so he has a lot of money. if not patient, maybe it will be something less to build a gaming pc.

But the problem is you can never tell when the dump and when the pump of bitcoin will happen.  This is one of the problem of investors, looking for the great timing to sell their coins. As of now there is not much movement of bitcoin in terms of dump and pump.  Would he wait for another year to build his rig just to ride and sell at the near  peak pump?  And  how can you tell  that next year there will be a pump?  As long as the person is satisfied to what he bought with his bitcoin, it never a bad decision.

You do it right because in the first place that is your goal, to upgrade or buy your pc for games. And I think that all the bitcoins you earned through whatever ways were really for the pc which is your ultimate goal as of the moment.  You feel just a little bit worried and questioned yourself if you had made the right decision because you are afraid that bitcoin price will really get pricey.

True, bitcoin is  a currency then  it should be used  to buy goods and other things . Theres nothing  to  regret if you  sold your coins on a cheap price as long  you been used it to buy some stuffs rather than being scammed  or lost all those coins for nothing. As long you used it  for your needs then its okay.

but if you want to waiting for a while, maybe there is a chance for bitcoin to increase for more and i am sure that you can get more money but don't be sad, its already happen and i hope you are not regret it for that.

You never did it wrong the people who are still holding and does not even give a dam coin away are doing it wrong you ae doing great not that great but the good way.

Contrary to popular belief, holding bitcoin is actually good for bitcoin.

1) Holding bitcoin effectively makes bitcoin more scarce, and therefore more expensive. (less bitcoin on the market, means less supply)

2) Because the blocksize has not been raised for 6 years, transactions have reached the artificial blocksize limit, and for some reason nothing is done to raise it. If every holder would constantly spent their bitcoin, the problem would be even worse.

There's nothing wrong with you because you're happy end to the  plan to gaming pc. And because bitcoin you lay your plans and decisions you will finish it. So just keep at it until you're happy with what you should do keep this form until you achieve your goals in that project .

Not the best decision to do at that moment but it's definitely not a wrong move. What you did is definitely fine. I guess that you've acquired those bitcoin at a lower price so even if you sold it not in the highest price possible, you still made some profit.

If you feel that you are doing right that is good for you. You used your bitcoin in a good way that is better that you fullfilled your project to buy a gaming pc. I know you do right and you happy what is your doing in your life. Then i suggest that after you bought that earn a bitcoin so that you can not miss the rise up of bitcoin.

No I don't think so. You've used it for your fun and happiness and remember it's a digital currency not a real one If you think about bitcoins price will go high in future and keep holding it it's worthless because money you've in your hand today worth more than in you'll have it in future.
I dont thinkt you where very right but not also wrong because there are allot of wrong persons on the world and i dont thjink they like to change because it is who they are!

And for that situation i don't care really about selling and buying at the right times since i believe upon every selling time of bitcoin is the right times is goof since your decision to sell it is good so you can have money to be used for good, and flactuation of coins are normal and if price will really go up well let it be, it is our decision to sell our coin and there's no wrong for that doing since we are here usinh bitcoin just intend to earn not to make it as display cosmetics.

In one form or other you have got satisfied, you have fulfilled a long time plan of buying some stuff. At any point you haven't got cheated. Just think that its been used on an emergency need rather than looking up the skyrocketing price. This also adds an experience to you during the future purchase and in other needs.

you have what you want and you did right thing for now. and about the price of bitcoin that has increase after you sold your bitcoin, i think you don't have to regret it while it makes you sad because you sold for low rate.

but i think you can have second chance to get another lower price of bitcoin and you can hold it for a while and waiting for next increase of the price of bitcoin so you can get profit with that.

Well, I guess there's nothing wrong with it. because you have to sell it, then rest assured that your actions properly. if you're afraid someday bitcoin prices will rise again, then start now strive to collect bitcoin back, and wait until its price rises. I am sure, so you will forget that you are selling the coins before. besides we also have to meet your needs, so I guess collect bitcoin become lighter work than before

At least it is my own approach to the losses.

not to mention that you can generate more coin again with a pc, if you have at least one gpu, you just need to mine etheruem or lbry, so it's definitely a good investment long term, also a pc really hold its value for a long time

At the start of this year when bitcoin was about $400 AUD, I bought a mechanical keyboard (Corsair K70) with my bitcoin, for fun. Then recently the price hit $1080 AUD. I was furious. My $200 keyboard was now worth double the market value... sigh.

We would somehow regret  in the end  when we find that  bitcoin price goes  up suddenly but  the  right thing  that we shouldnt  regret  because  we benefit ourselves  when we  sell our bitcoin on  a cheaper price compare to the current  price. As long  you bought somethings important to you  theres nothing to regret about.

Its not actually a waste when you  bought  something which is  beneficial to you and there nothing to  regret because  bitcoins price  is moving and   its normal when 1 day  it would  change  since  yesterdays price. Having  investments  would be   very good  because  you could  able to make profits with  your  investments.

I sold around 2 BTC when it's price was around $200.

Am I happy?
Of course, I am happy. The asset I had helped me to contain the bad situation in which I got stuck.

Am I regret now?
Never. And never will. The asset/money you have which sits idle without fulfilling or helping you is not Good. It helped you to achieve your goal. You're pushing forward. That's good, in fact, that's great.

Bitcoin is nothing but another currency. You must use it whenever you need.

What if the price of bitcoin raises? Never mind that. It always increases or decreases.

You sold something to buy something else that you need more in this moment, you did it what you thought its best for you, never regret for you choices. I`m in different situation from you, I have good lap top and for now I don't need to worry about other things, so I will keep my coins, gamble with them and other things, but in the moment when I need to buy something I will sell them and do what I think its best for me, no matter what price it is in that moment. When man got a need he got a need, he find a way to finish it, one way or another, never regret for choices you made.
If you work hard, you will make that amount of money soon I believe.

i like the way you think.
i have also sold some bitcoin at lower prices (not exactly at $200 but back in those days) and i never regret it but i am not happy about it either.

i am not unhappy because of selling nor because of price, but because i was forced to sell bitcoin while i was hoping to spend bitcoin instead of selling it.

Amazing insight. Simple, yet true words. I was beating myself over selling some BTC during dump period.

Then I pondered a little about this whole situation and I realized that bitcoin is just a money,  it is not the most important thing in life.

As long as you gained something by selling it - in this case it allowed you to fix your problems then it is perfectly fine to sell at any time.

Don't waste your time wondering if BTC will be huge in the future, it may be or not.

So relax. I also cashed some of my money about a month afo to buy some necessary staff and I don't care of bitcoin's price too much. You didn't do wrong. You've spent your coin in a way that you really want it and your coins not just went wasted but it goes on everything that you've spent with it like what you've said. You've sold your coins for 200 USD to have an high end PC, you know what I mean? The bitcoins that you've just sold is the PC that you're going to have or you already have, you can see it everyday and every time that you will use it, so you did not do anything wrong. You've just achieve one of your dreams with bitcoins. :)

The only thing that can make his action wrong is when he have regrets doing it. But if he is satisfied with what he have, even if the price went really high, and he have no regrets, then what he did is good for him. At least for himself it is the right thing to do.
yes that is right, i think if a person need to spend his money to fulfill his need then he should not regret for either the price increase or stay stable he should only think that he was enable to use his money for completing his needs.

I agree, it is best to spend our bitcoin when you have a better use for it.  Spending it on the item that will help you a lot or entertain you for a long time is worth it.  Unless you gamble your bitcoin and lose then, I can say you did the right thing of spending it on something you have been longing to buy for a long time.
