Title: Ascendancy Scam - Claiming back investments has ended.
Post by: Lauda on February 05, 2017, 09:37:16 AM
Preliminary statement:
Quote
One of the thieves has contacted us; they are very sorry and have already apologized:
  • The damage is nowhere near as suspected; it looks like the data on the website was faked (less than 8 BTC was stolen; our Google Form does confirm this story so far as < 8 BTC was reported).
  • "Andrew Penn" has paid all the stolen BTC to the escrow address (https://www.blocktrail.com/BTC/tx/5be2f935373fc19789199622a4792668c20a05f6705d7663df3a387851b43ccb) with his own money ("Richard" ran away with his half).
  • It is not exactly known who Richard is at this time, and it looks like he suckered in this young individual into an "easy money scheme".

As it currently stands, investors should expect a full refund (minus TX fees).

This situation can be solved as I had previously anticipated. People tend to make mistakes. Please do not file any reports, and remain patient.

For those that have invested at any time (people who invested after 8 AM GMT, Friday the 3rd of February as well), please respond only in following format:

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I sign a message?
Read this tutorial: How to sign a message?! (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=990345.0).

2. I've transferred my money from an exchange, online wallet, et. al. What do I do?
Use the proper format and mention this in the 'Miscellaneous' field.

3. I still am not able to sign a message. What do I do?
Use the proper format and mention this in the 'miscellaneous field'.

4. How much time do I have to claim my investment?
The claiming process is ending on the 15th of February. The thread will be locked once this has been finalized. In case that you have not claimed money in time, then this is your own fault. We are not going to wait forever for people to make a single post.

Reimbursement of requests that fall under FAQ questions 2 and 3 will take a longer time to process. Any attempt at cheating this will result in negative ratings from several Default Trust members. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them. As always, please remain patient.

The first batch used an underestimate of ~20 cents for fees. All other TXs will attempt to deduct ~50 cents (which is still generally only half of what needs to be paid).
Paid back: 14.52445627 BTC ;; 100% (of claimed)
TX fees total paid: ~0.0164

I was paid in ASC the 29 of January, and the equivalent is 0.15 BTC. My address to receive refund: 1BEC3kMDeCNZiP2pwxKjRpQQbbS7Pat72X

Unfortunately, translators and people who were participating in other bounties will receive no compensation.

Do we need to translate it into spanish in order for you to understand?

Yeah part of it was escrowed, but you'd be paid in ASC (if this wasn't a scam) not in BTC for your work. You can ask scammer to make a blockchain just for you to pay you your 1500 ASC he'll have plenty of time to develop something in jail.

Since the main thread is closed and was edited today I'm posting here that I have translated the ANN and I have been in touch all the time with SparkIt (The project manager I think).

I'm not sure how are the team/escrow handle the loss but I want just to post here as a reference for the future (hope Lauda will not delete this post)

Translators should not be ignored!

I'm going to state this one more time. You are not getting anything in the following cases:
1) You were part of a bounty campaign that had no 'pay-BTC equivalent' contract (for example, the signature campaign did have this).
2) You have translated the thread and have/have not received payment in ASC (non existing token).
3) You are unable to provide adequate proof that you own a certain address (people who used exchanges, web wallets and similar don't worry, we will handle on per-case basis).

This is primarily a refund for people who invested money or who were part of a binding contract, not for work that was done. None of the 'genuine' team members are getting paid either.

Greedy? I wasted a lot of hours with the translation and the videos for the video contest. The video contest was canceled so im fuck, but i was already paid for my translation and i had 1500 ASC so i want my money cause ALL the money in the ASC accounts was escrowed.
Bullshit. The ASC token was not under escrow, only the invested BTC. Stop wasting my time.

It means you're cheating and lying
you deserve the negative trust for this.

If he can't prove he translated it right now, he is indeed getting a negative rating.

I will update this thread and post a bit later.

I don't need to answer you but I will forward the PSD files to Lauda if needed (but seems that he highly needed so I'm uploading them right now).

I'm accepting that I am scammed but may I know the reason why the translators will not get any satoshis? I understand that investors are more important but maybe it's not good to ignore others.

PSD files sent to Lauda, I don't need to lie.

So I filled out the google doc form, should I sign a message with my BTC address as well?  Or is that only for people whose investment went through to the escrow address?

Are you just ignoring the fact that you could translate the whole white paper, website and everything from ASC and still no bounty participants will be reimbursed? We are all in the same soup and if you want to get paid from investors who got scammed you are no better than those scammers.

Sorry for the minor confusion. I have made changes to the OP:
  • If you have invested before 8 AM GMT on Friday, you only make a post in the proper format (as found in OP).
  • If you have invested after 8 AM GMT on Friday, you: 1) Fill out the Google form; 2) Make a post in the proper format (as found in OP).

Nonsense. Anyone could come attacking us for "taking money" ourselves even if we didn't do anything. This will be done 100% transparently.

Apologies do not bring your money back, so cut the bullshit and let me resolve this situation. Nobody is at fault besides the two people who were the 'developers', therefore none of the other team members have to apologize for anything besides wasting their own time.

You need to find the TX from Bittrex to ASC and provide proof of this. With exchanges and certain web wallets it will be much harder, but we'll handle those on a case by case basis.

You are right. While I'm not an escrow, I do apologize that you couldn't spare 10 minutes of your time reading the full escrow agreement and finding out that it's forwarded every 8 hours.

It's not the Escrow's fault, and they didn't "fuck up". Everything was written in the agreement, and it was followed until they ran away. People investing should be aware of everything that happens, at the minimum regarding how their investment is processed. I don't know what else you want. Are you looking for the team members to say something like "I'm sorry that the devs ran away?"?

Dude, You're a Legendary member and I never expected this from you. It's very simple. You won't get anything No Matter how much you complain here. The refund is ONLY Investors And Not for Translators or bounty participants. You should know what You're getting into when accepting to translate the thread. At this point, You can't blame anyone for not receiving any compensation of some sort. Live with that.

Those that have withdraws from exchanges - you may have to give one of use control of your exchange account for a short period of time so we can prove that you were the actual owner, since there isn't another good way to prove it.

It is fine. I just wanted to point it out. Considering that you're among the people that were able to quickly prove their ownership, then you are going to be among the first to receive a refund.

You will be refunded after the investors with signed messages, I am in the same situation as you, and I also do not know what could be done to prove that (I did a screen from my bittrex withdrawal but Lauda does not seem to take it in account)
But you are on the investor's list to be refunded. It's already a good start.

Correct. People that have signed a message are going to be the first ones to receive a refund. Then we move onto people that have provided other forms of proof, and so on. Anyone who has used some kind of web wallet, exchange or similar will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Screenshots on their own are insufficient proof. It is trivial to fake them.

There will also be a time-limit for claiming. We are obviously not going to wait weeks and months for someone to step up and claim their money.

I'm slowly contacting everyone who has made claims in order to verify their investments in one way or another. The table is slowly turning green, whilst I do more background calculation in excel.

There is still some unclaimed money (as mentioned in the second post).

'Official' cutoff date is the 15th of February. After this date, no further claims will be accepted. We can not be held responsible if someone does not claim their money in time.

As far as repayment is concerned, it is likely that I will have final numbers in 24-48 hours. Repayment can start right after (for those that have supplied adequate proof of investment).

That would be the team members, and not the translators. The amount of time invested by translators is negligible in comparison. It has not been yet decided what would be done with the unclaimed amount.

This is unfortunately taking longer than I had anticipated. The goods news is that investors should expect a full repayment now.

4 days left to make claims.

What were some of the warning signs from this scam?
This isn't a discussion thread, therefore do not attempt to discuss the events.

This won't work. You need to sign the message (see format in OP) using the address you invested with. In this case you invested with Address A (1569sNNM8G6jhAqiMaoReEnfc146q3LAQj) and signed with Address B (1FLLVFpdnBQLULcQvYLUqKHiqvfKEjFCDx). You need to sign a message with Address A.

this is from my exchange wallet, sorry could not figure how to sign
You can't. If you manage to properly sign the first address (as mentioned above), it will be fine.

Whilst not being the proper message format, it verifies and therefore is adequate. If you want to do this 100% properly, then you'd sign this message (but not required at this point):

This is investments.blockchain, and today is 12.02.2016. I'm signing this message in order to prove ownership of my address used to invest into ASC.

Your signed message does verify, but it's useless to me. I was wrong about my previous statement, but that's why I triple check users before I add them to anything.

You did not use that address to invest with. You used: 1569sNNM8G6jhAqiMaoReEnfc146q3LAQj ;; that's the address that you have to sign a message with.

Hopefully first repayments will happen today. I may extend the claiming period for a few more days, but after this no further claims will be accepted. As an investor you need to act responsibly in time.

I've extended that to the 20th of February. We have been waiting for Coinbase to process the remaining funds, which took an awfully long time. Anyhow, you should see the first repayments within the 24 hours. I'll try to speed it up as much as possible. You should receive your original funding amount minus approximate TX fees (~20 cents).

The mantis (minerjones) is still asleep. :D You can check the status of payments in the second table here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1778405.msg17740167#msg17740167). If you are marked as orange, this means that a payment proposal has been maid for said user/address. It requires all three escrows to sign before it can process.

Actually, and may I as luckily (due to what happened), there weren't that many members involved. This makes it easier to rectify the situation.

This is the last update: All the claimed invested money was returned to their owners. The claiming back period (even after an additional extension) is now over. Considering that this is resolved, I will lock the thread soon. Hopefully nobody has to endure a similar situation again.
Locked at time of update.
