Title: Best bitcoin wallet
Post by: krazy4 on April 18, 2013, 04:04:16 AM
Been lurking on here for awhile now, figured I'd make a post.

Looking for the most stable and secure wallet.
I was using my bitfloor account to hold everything, but they just went down for good apparently. Got my money out so that was nice.

Thanks for the help guys.

I've been using MultiBit recently, which looks nice enough. Has built in charts, good transaction history, and can even show current value from sites like BTC-E and Bitstamp, then show you how much your wallet is worth in the currency of your choice.

Thanks, I'll check it out.

Coinbase is pretty good. Forgot I had an account there. Went from coinbase to bitfloor and didn't look back. Now bitfloor is gone :(
Any other exchange platform that accepts bank of america cash deposits?

Only put money on online wallets that you are willing to lose.

Store your savings offline with something like the Armory wallet or generating your own public/private key with VanityGen or at the very least use the standard client and encrypt your wallet.

For spending money you can use online wallets like blockchain.info or any of the other established exchanges. I keep a few BTC on MtGox for spending money.

Blockchain.info has been the most reliable for me, and has the largest user base. They have been down for at least an hour as of right now though, so I'm not thrilled about that.

If you are serious about protecting your Bitcoins, and don't want to have to trust anyone, install Bitcoin-QT (get download link from Bitcoin.org), wait for the blockchain to download (at least overnight), and then set up armory and use that for your wallet (bitcoinarmory.com).

Store your coins on a cold wallet, or paper wallet, until you want to use them. Make sure you back up your wallet and keep it in a very safe place.

Coinbase is good its clean and User friendly.

I also enjoy using Coinbase as well -- it's actually where I bought my first coins and store them (2-step authentication is awesome!) The only quarrel I have with them is their 10 btc/daily limit (Mt.Gox/BTC-e/other exchanges are better for buying large amounts of cryptos) - I've missed many opportunities to purchase at $50-$70 because of this. It's ok though, I'm still happy with their service and I'm still buying 10 btc/day* with them.

*Once I hit 30 days after my first purchase of 10 btc, it gets upgraded to 50 btc/day... I can't wait!!!

blockchain.info and coinbase

Offline paper wallet or your own PC client is good, if you want to deal with all the backup stuff. If you are rich do that, otherwise above two are good enough.

For online wallets, I like using blockchain, they allow double encryption, so you have 1 password to login to your account and a 2nd password to send out coins (which may help if you ever have your 1st password intercepted).

The sad part is, since bitfloors gone down, according to blockchains twitter, blockchain has been getting hit HARD with DDOS attacks so their servers are currently denying service.

I would recommend an offline wallet like this one for Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.schildbach.wallet (Make sure you backup the private keys after big transfers!)

It feels more secure then all online wallets. There is always a change on downtime/hacking or something else that can cause you to loos your money.

Electrum (electrum.org) is very easy to use and works great on my antiquated machine. I have multiple wallets with non-zero balances that I've deleted but can restore anytime using the 12-word seed, which I have encrypted and stored in multiple locations.

See: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Electrum

Despite being a long-time lurker on this forum, I've never read anything suggesting that it is, or is not, a safe enough solution for large balances.

If you use a reasonably complex password, your private keys are safely encrypted in blockchain.info's database so your coins are safe from hackers, and blockchain.info allows you to receive backups of your wallet so you can access your bitcoins if the site goes down.

Bitaddress.org => make a paper wallet while you are offline (preferably a clean boot from a linux system)

second best may be blockchain.info's my wallet with a yubikey

I feel that blockchain.info is most popular but coinbase is prob better.

No.
No, no, no, no.
No.

https://blockchain.info/wallet is a bitcoin wallet.
You maintain control of your private keys, and the provider (blockchain.info) does not have the ability to spend or steal your bitcoins.  If they are hacked, they don't store anything that would provide a hacker with the ability to spend/steal your bitcoins.  Assuming you are wise enough to store a backup of your blockchain.info wallet file, you can still gain access to your own bitcoins even if blockchain.info shuts down and disappears for some reason.  It is software that allows you to receive, secure, and send bitcoins.

coinbase is an online account.
Any bitcoins you store with coinbase are no longer yours.  You have given them to an unregulated and uninsured complete stranger and trusted their promise that they will give them back to you (or forward them on somewhere else) any time you ask them to do so.  You have no access to the private keys at all.  Since coinbase has the private keys, if coinbase is hacked the hacker could steal bitcoins. Since coinbase doesn't allow you access to the private keys, there isn't any way to back up your wallet.  Therefore, if coinbase were to shut down and/or disappear for some reason, it would be impossible for you to ever gain access to your bitcoins again.  It is not a bitcoin wallet, it's an uninsured, unregulated company that offer a savings account that pays you 0% interest.

I think we can still do better and am considering developing a new wallet. Do you guys think there is room/need in the market for this?

Sure, there's definitely room in the market for better open source wallets.  Don't waste your time on a closed source project unless you're just doing it for personal use though.  Hardly anyone is going to trust software with their bitcoins unless the source code can be independently reviewed and compiled.

I agree open source is the way to go. I rely on blockchain.info rather than an exchange, like coinbase, to take care of my easy access storage needs. But it would take coinbase like 5 minutes to implement the system that blockchain has going. I dont know why they havent yet gone that route.

There's no such thing as "the best wallet", everyone has their own opinion. I personally use Electrum, because I don't have to spend a long time syncing with the network.

I would definitely start with Coinbase.  The one downside is that they used to require a full 1 BTC purchase for the first transaction.  This might no longer be the case now that BTC has flirted with $1000 (it wasn't a problem for me when BTC was only ~$100).

Just keep away from Armory please and you will be fine. I got data corrupted and i couldn't run it ever again, did fresh copy , did it on other PC, imported PVtKeys and my balance was 0, that night i lost a lot of nerves for nothing, than i got my BTC back by importing PVtKeys at blockchain, than i decided for other wallet since i don't like hot wallets.

Using exchanges and gambling sites to store your bitcoin is the worst idea IMO, as you have no control of the private keys.
If you want an easy-to-use wallet, use SPVs such as Electrum.
If you want to have maximum safety, use offline wallets.

and if you want simplest way to store your BTC (especially few BTC), you can try online wallet like blockchain.info

The most secure wallet should be offline wallets and paper wallets.
When created and maintained correctly, you don't need to worry about  hacking, malware, server downtime, etc.

Heads up: 3rd party wallets like Coinbase are not real wallets. They are held by a 3rd party. Those bitcoins are not under your control. This defeats the "trustless" nature of bitcoin. If you don't control the private keys, you don't control the bitcoins.

Let Gox be a lesson to you....

No I'm pretty sure you don't have control over any private kes - all you have is your account so if they decide to close it for some reason you'll lose access to all of your funds. Guys if you're storing anything more than BTC2 I would suggest you just buy a Pi for $30 and set up a cold storage signing system using Armory/Electrum. Doesn't cost a lot to have a secure system implemented.

And with blockchain.info you can download a back up and you can open it easily on multibit. Blockchain.info cannot access your online wallet because it is encrypted in their server.

I like coinbase for short/medium term storage since it's convenient and has great protection.

Blochchain.info for short term storage. Mostly if I need btc for a day or week.

Blockchain.info IOS wallet (which can be synced to your regular blockchain wallet) if I intend to purchase from any site with QR code available (not all sites do). QR codes really do make everything easier especially when out and about.

I don't hold btc in any one place long term. It's always invested in one thing or another such as a service, alt coin, asic, or something else.

IMO, It is not a good idea to store your bitcoin on Coinbase as you don't have control to your private keys at all.
Blockchain.info on the other hand is way better in this aspect.

you can try blockchain.info, this wallet has advantages such as:
1 has a double security system
2 has a security google authenticator
3 can make more than one BTC address
4. reliable transfer speeds
5. miner fees are not too expensive
until this day I still wear blockchain.info as my wallet
I hope you can wear it and feel the benefits ...  8)

Online and most convenient is probably blockchain.info

First, set aside a second to think about your bank. In addition to keeping the money in a safe and secure, the financial institution maintains a system of record to follow that which you receive as well as what you may spend. The bank tracks this for each of the company's clients, reality we simply can't start to see the record, we trust that the bank is diligently and honestly tracking these transactions... But... what if you DON'T trust banking institutions?

If you are looking for user-friendliness, the best wallets are Electrum or blockchain.info.
If you are looking for safety, the best wallets are offline wallets and paper wallets.

MultiBit, or Electrum. Electrum has this nifty feature where all the addresses (also change addresses, etc.) can be re-created by an initial seed-sentence of 12 words. Those deterministic addresses can be recreated by only storing (or remembring) the initial sentence!

For the official bitcoin core wallet, you need to have the full blockchain data to achieve the fully trustless feature. That's why you will need to download about 25GB of data in the start.

You can use the bootstrap torrent (link in the bottom of https://bitcoin.org/en/download) to make the download faster.

Bitcoin core will always be the 'best' wallet in my eyes.

Out of all the other wallets I've used in the past, I'd recommend Electrum for ease of use and Armory for security. Large amounts of btc should always be stored offline so it would also be wise to learn how to make paper wallets, there are several guides to do this on the forum.

Same here. Love Coinbase. The cool thing about an online wallet is that I have access to my BTC wherever I am in the world without any hassle. If I were to carry my wallet.dat file on a pendrive with me, I would have to install the qt on a public computer (unless I bring my laptop with me everywhere which is cumbersome) every time I wanna use my BTC which is risky.

I am using coinbase wallet. It is secure but there is always a possibility of being hacked on online wallet.

Well for large amounts of BTC, you should always use Coinbase's Vault instead of the regular wallet. The Vault is as safe as it gets in terms of online storage and the risks of getting hacked is reduced to a minimum.

I figured the best online wallets were Greenaddress and Coinkite. They both are HD wallets with added security. Most of them store majority of their funds in cold storage and also provide multi-signature support for added security.

I also prefer Blockchain.info for its ease of use. You can also ensure Blockchain is pretty secure by ensuring the following is taken care of :

Setup 2FA, make sure you delete all wallet backups from your email, setup 2FA on your email and keep the wallet backup elsewhere on another device or somewhere safer and encrypted. On blockchain.info account settings make sure to disable Automatic Email Backups if already enabled.

Set a second password under account settings, so that to send any bitcoins the user will have to enter the second password too. Make sure this one is really unique and strong. It's also better not to set any password hints. If the password hits were set before this would be emailed to you, make sure to delete that too.

You can also set 2FA to be send to your phone via SMS or Google Authenticator rather than the email associated with your account. Also go to debugging under account settings and set PBKDF2 Iterations to 10,000 to make it harder for anyone to brutforce your password. Also, disable TOR IP's if you're not using it. If you have a static IP and if you're 100% sure you will be always on that IP to access your wallet, you can set a whitelist to allow only logins through your static IP.

Were you using Teamviewer or any other software providing access to your PC? probably you'll want to revisit all those apps you have installed and make sure no one's accessing your PC using it.

Also change your blockchain short username to something unpredictable by others.

Try to use a desktop or mobile wallet. If you do travel a lot, try to use blockchain.info with 2FA but if you have Android, then install an Android wallet.

If you want to support the bitcoin network, running a full node with Bitcoin Core is the best.

I think Trezor (bitcointrezor.com (http://bitcointrezor.com)) is the best wallet out there, it's BIP32 compatible so you can recover your coins to other wallets when it gets lost or stolen + you private keys never touch internet or anything that might be compromised by malware or other viruses. And unlike other cold wallets you can also spend your coins from Trezor, gotta say I love mine.

Most of then can't buy it because of the price. Ledger is the only direct-competitor to Trezor.

Okay, it isn't a cold wallet by definition, but it basically is a paper wallet which you can spend from without exposing your private keys to anything internet connected, transactions are signed in-device.

You are right about the price thou, no reason to protect your bitcoins with a wallet that's worth more than what it holds :)

No. Ledger is powered by HW. 1 firmware which is open-source AFAIK and also https://github.com/LedgerHQ/.

Okay, it isn't a cold wallet by definition, but it basically is a paper wallet which you can spend from without exposing your private keys to anything internet connected, transactions are signed in-device.

Right except about the similarity to paper wallet. You will have to expose private key in a paper wallet for sending Bitcoin unless you sign in an offline computer and if there is an offline computer, there isn't need of paper wallet.

You are right about the price thou, no reason to protect your bitcoins with a wallet that's worth more than what it holds :)

Precisely. If you only want to hold a small amount, Ledger or paper wallet or even a secure online pc is enough. Most people buy Trezor if they have many Bitcoins to hold.

I'm afraid this is not entirely true (but I know I'm taking it to the extreme here):

Quote
The firmware is not open source - as vendor NDAs prevent us from releasing a source code that would be of any use to our users. However, the specifications are fully open and detailed, and all cryptographic operations are deterministic, which allow any user to verify that the card is answering what it should and that there is no side channel.

Love Coinbase so much.

Cool thing about online wallet is you don't own Bitcoins by definition and that means, the service provider can take it whenever they like. It is like giving keys to your bank to others and tell them to unlock and take money when you want it. I think nobody does this.

Can't you use a paper wallet + mobile wallet or only mobile wallet?

Actually, online wallets aren't safe as client wallets like Armory, Electrum etc. - there is always to risk that the online wallet is getting hacked.

I use CoinJar as online account, which is pretty handy (EftPos card) and fast deposit (POLi and BPay) in Australia. But do not keep too much Bitcoin in online account. So I use breadwallet as private account on my iPhone.

Coinbase is only "online" wallet with insurance for being hacked, and it's very specific it would have to be entire thing hacked not one customers credentials stolen and btc taken.  As general rule use online wallets just for spending money.

I suggest looking into cold storage wallets.  They are most secure if done correctly, and the done correctly is a big part of it.

+1 for Electrum. Just wrote a longer reply in another thread in here on a similar topic. (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=771130.msg13006800#msg13006800)

Bottom line is: Electrum is an excellent combination between high security (definitely much better than online wallets), and good usability (avoids downloading the Blockchain).

Except for very large amounts stored, or unless you're also intending to support the network by being a full node, I'd say a lightweight client like Electrum (or similarly, MultiBit) are the ideal choice for most users today.

In advanced I believe you can get the private keys on blockchain.  So there are way's of sending even if online wallet is down.  But keep in mind even if you do paper wallet from it it's a hot wallet.  So it's not as good as security.  But make sure you use 2fa on it that helps some.

Cold storage is what you want for storing any sizable amount.  Paper wallet if done right really is one of best ones out there.  Assuming you have it stored safely.

Bitcoin wallets is where you store your bitcoins. Without them, you cannot use bitcoins. But, selecting a secure wallet is important. In fact, most important.. Because, losing bitcoins means burning cash.
Now, according to my usage and researches and what I have found. These are the wallets which i found trusted and useful.
(1) Coinbase- they provide more privacy as they have their own privacy team separately. Best thing is that transactions are completely tax free.
(2) Blockchain- It has got the most number of usets. So no doubt on security. It's trusted most by miners too.
(3) Mycelium wallet- It's git very low transaction fees and provides the best backup system for private keys. You can use multiple wallets at once.

What are you meaning by tax free?   As far as taxes any wallet should not be charging taxes.

It would be a government doing that info likely from exchange or such.  But there is not link between a BTC address and taxes, you really need a exchange and to sell and have a profit to worry if it's enough to be taxable.

1. Do you mean transaction fee free? Tax is different from transaction fee

2. yes blockchain wallet is used by many but the security? I dont think bc wallets is super secured

3. Mycelium requires low trans fee for low priority transaction but it isnt an advantage for it as almost all bitcoin wallets you can set how much fees you want to pay for your transaction

2) Nothing indicates that Blockchain.info is trusted by miners. In fact, many users have gone against it.
3) Any desktop/phone wallet should allow the users to use their address repeatedly and can use another one simultaneously.

For small amounts which I'm willing to lose, it's a yes. With them being trustable, there's drawbacks on using them. Firstly, you can't control your private key and would defeat the purpose of decentralisation that Bitcoin is trying to achieve. Secondly, they have various policy which restricts the transaction and they can close your account if you're involved in such activities.

I think we get a lot of people who don't read the pages which gets us answers like this.  Online wallets are hot wallets... no good for holding long term.  Great for spending short term... but in no way the best wallet overall.

Everyone really should look into hot/cold wallets before saying a online wallet is best.  On blockchain at least it does allow private keys to be made into paper wallets.  It still is hotwallet but if ever needed you could import into another wallet.

Hardware wallets are Ledger and Trezor for example. Wallets like Bitcoin Core, Multibit, Electrum are not hardware wallet, they are desktop wallet. They are not designed to be resistant to virus attacks. Online wallet does have a large amount of disadvantages but for most other than Blockchain.info, it would be alright to be a hot wallet.

Wrong. Blockchain.info isnt really the best because there are some incidents that users are losing their coins on their blockchain.info wallets even they have 2fa enabled

2FA makes it harder to take your coins yes.  But it in no way with a hotwallet makes it where there is no risk to being taken by a thief.

How much have you researched into this?  Just a lot of the statement is flat out wrong.  A hot wallet (what blockchain is) always has a possible threat that is not near as safe as cold wallets.

A paper wallet done right beats your online wallet every single time as far as safty.

Coinbase is not bad to get your coins but then you get them out of there. Online wallets shouldn't be used anyways. Just download Electrum or Multibit and you will be good to go. This is the best of both worlds between Bitcoin Core and online wallets!

No matter how trusted they are, it is centralised and they can say that you violated their TOS and freeze your coins. With desktop wallets, you have the control of your coins and there is no need to worry about it being down. Xapo only insure coins stored in their vaults which means that they won't be held liable for any losses on your normal xapo wallet. If someone manage to gain access to your Xapo account, they can steal all of it.

basically xapo wallet use 2fa defaulted and the 2fa only can acces from your android device or you can use sms verification with your number phone
i think it's a strong system, im use xapo more than 1year and i never get any issue and my account was never frozen
Previous experience doesn't mean that your future experience would be the same. Coinbase had a 2FA vulnerability before which affected those who had 2FA. If they one day gets hacked, server side, not client side, they will not reinburse you or at most up to $100 with their vault. For vault, you have to wait for 48 hours to receive your coins. SPV Clients like Electrum does not have a central authority and is independent. Can you sign a message with Xapo?

I use xapo wallet.
I like to use this wallet because free for received and sent btc. No fee and You always received full amount

xapo is only good for storing small amount of bitcoins for your daily use but if you are storing large amount then you should switch to desktop wallet as it is more safe than using 3rd party wallets

i save 0.4 at my xapo wallet and im never get any bugs :)
i think Xapo is professional company , and he would keep the trust of the customer

Your best bet would be using a desktop wallet such as Bitcoin core if you have a lot of space, Multibit HD, or Electrum. Encrypt your wallet and write down your safe words if given to make sure you can restore your wallet if something goes wrong. Make sure you back up your wallet regularly. The most safest is just to keep your coins off computer on a paper wallet somewhere safe because your computer can be vulnerable environment. If you lose your paper wallet, you are basically coinless so place it somewhere safe if you do. The most important factor is how many coins do you have and to adapt to the situation. You need to examine your potential risk and exploitations that can put you in unsafe environment without any prior knowledge or even thinking about.

I love blockchain.info for its quick setup and ease of use. It can also be set up with 2fa to add another layer of security. It is best if people do their own research to find the best solution for them

Yes, thats right, not recomemded for storing a lot btc there. I just use for daily transcation because no fee to sent and received btc.
I think the best wallet to store coin is electrum, coinbase and blockchain

But in my experience, desktop wallets are better than web based wallets. But blockchain.info is unique by the way it provide access to our private keys and you can access your bitcoins via internet from anywhere.

Both online wallets and desktop software wallets have many pros and cons. We must choose a wallet which lets us to access private key and easy set up based. Any wallet we can use but we need to have strong password or phone verification enabled are better ways to have secured wallets.

Xapo wallet seems to have all of those except the access to private key part. It has high security level as you mentioned and has a debit card that enables the user to withdraw bitcoins which is a bonus to many.
Haven't used it myself just bringing up some points that I have seen from their site and other btc news sites.

You will find a few different sites that compare different ones.  Bitcoin.org does this - https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet

But the problem are there are SO many different kinds.  To my knowlege there is not one that has every software, hardware, cold storage/hotstorage, web wallets, etc.  The list would just be massive so I don't think you will find all of them.

Main thing you need to know is if it's to store a small amount or a big amount.  Then look into hot/cold wallets depending on anwser.   And decide what fits you.

Try Bitcoin wallet as much as possible, using the most convenient "according to your own"

Use cold wallet (offline wallet) for example, electrum, multibit, bitcoin core etc as the primary storage Bitcoin you. Others, such as for transactions, trade and etc can use the hot wallet (online wallet) for example, blockchain, coinbase, xapo etc which is important not store in a Bitcoin wallet.

Depends on country.  Coinbase is good for US, but it's really not international like BTC.  Each country has exchanges that work best for it.  So it would depend on location.

Also coinbase is still a hot wallet.  I don't like that for long term storage.  And some dont like the KYC rules with them.  It does not bug me personally on KYC but some it does.

Xapo is a relatively good online hot wallet but that's all. If a service have knowledge of your private keys, it shouldn't be safe at all since a hacker can steal them easily. In terms of privacy, Xapo has none. They require users to verify their phone number before using which is a huge turn off for many users. It's required since they probably have to comply with the local regulatory measures.
