LOL. Altcoin means alternative coin. Alternative to Bitcoin. Bitcoin is not an altcoin and can never be an altcoin. Get your facts straight. Even if Ethereum prices surpass Bitcoin it won't make Bitcoin an altcoin. Ethereum has a lot of weaknesses, too much premine and instamine coins and central authority (aka Vitalik Buterin). Look how they forked the coin but original chain ETC still survived.

You might see this at this time, yes bitcoin is not functional, we have people fighting like kids over scale debate and they don't see the big problem that we have. Let me tell you I am a positve person and I do believe that bitcoin can get its feet up. August might be deadly for bitcoin but if all sort out well we will see that bitcoin will become to be used more and more.

It can't be an altcoin as bitcoin was and is and will be the first cryptocurrency out there, some alt could take its place by market cap and all but still bitcoin is bitcoin and everything is traded compared to it. Many alts wouldn't have their price if there was no bitcoin which is used to exchange between alts most of the time and as the system is built around it. Yes some alt can take bitcoins place but I just hope that we won't get to that point. I am not transfering my funds to ethereum as for me bitcoin is still a thing, let's hope that everything will get sorted out well.

I totally agree with you.... all of this was made to be a currency but people like profit and they like to make money so that is what it is now, but I still believe that somewhere in the future we can see a stable price and hopefully to not use it as an investment but rather as a currency. Thing is that I got into it as a way to send/receive money but when you get into it you see that you can't avoid the investment thing and that all is around the money I mean there are places where you could sepnd and earn it but it ain't worth it atm when price can go up 400$ up and down in a matter of hours.

Bitcoin an alternative coin? Even if another coin project(I doubt if eth ever will) surpasses bitcoins value, it will always remain the original crypt coin. Every other coin after it, regardless of bitcoins future is an alt. Bitcoin is god,  the first cause.

What you are speaking is a users who got burned by trading in bitcoin or gambled in bitcoin and lost everything , that is the reason you are hatting the crypto currency, if not their are so many users who are earning nicely through crypto currency.

I agree with you. Etherum is just a kind of alternative coin to bitcoin. The price is not the criteria to judge which one is the altcoin.

You're a lucky dude then because there's this whole banking system with free and instant transactions out there. You'll find banks in many streets and if you go in they'll be happy to explain how they work. I've heard they might become popular.

Bitcoin have come a very long way and can never become an Altcoin, it still remains the king of crypto currencies.
Remember all other coins are measured in the equivalent to Bitcoin.
Ethereum on the other hand is really moving strong, but I can't see it take over Bitcoin.

I'll give you a few reasons why.

Bitcoin is decentralised, meaning independent, meaning Vitalik cannot do as he pleases. Or like other major currencies regulated by the banks.

Venture capitalists have poured tons of money into the bitcoin ecosystem. This can only be good for its adoption rate unlike eth.

Just think Argentina, Venezuela, Greece etc. Imagine if most of them held coins instead of their worthless currencies that the bank wouldn't allow them withdraw.

I can go on and on but the fact is that no satoshi no Vitalik.

I think Ethereum still has a chance, rate near $400 now, it could easily overtake Bitcoin on a market cap if Bitcoin doesn't go to the moon.

Bitcoin's owner is everyone and is cannot be managed by one person. Its status is very different from other coins. It has a creator which has not even reveal himself and spend his bitcoins.

I think it is impossible if ETH will overtake BTC, just look at market price if bitcoin rise then altcoin price will much go down

I have to agree with you that Bitcoin transactions are a problem, and along with its fees too. It is possible that some altcoins may rise up with better features and replace Bitcoin. Ethereum may be good, but it is a relatively new altcoin, so it is still in development and gaining popularity. i bet 99% of Bitcoin users don't have ETH at all.

Bitcoin cannot be used for micro transactions, due to the high fees now. I don't see why Bitcoin should be used for these though, cash and PayPal are fine for now, and to use Bitcoin/Altcoin would be even more troublesome, honestly.  :-\

This. The only issue with bitcoin right now is the high transaction fee. If this can be resolved, then bitcoin can really launch and go to the moon. Currently, ETH is also enjoying a price surge, my only worry is that it is being pump really hard right now, and ICO's and Crowdsale now has an option to invest with ETH. But I don't think it can overtook bitcoin now. Well its possible, but it will took ETH a couple of years, IMHO.

Bitcoin is holding its initial idea, you say it is slow but it was done like that on purpose, speeding things up will most likely decrease its value like what most of the Core and Original Adopters think will happen if trying to simplify the network.

ETH fans will cling to ETH and BTC fans to BTC. Its highly likely at the current trend that bitcoin will take the second spot in market cap and perhaps later even in real usage but I won't call it an altcoin because it will always have a dedicated spot in the cryptoworld.

Technologically both of them, BTC and ETH are inferior to waves or probably many other cryptos. The last day's ETH disaster when bancor ICO happened proves it.

From all the comments I pulled out yours, cause looks like you know what you are talking about , and your comment have a logic that I can follow. Can you tell us more about this weaknesses, why premine and instamane coins are bad? And does this mean that central authority, this Vitalik, can decide to run away with everything when he decide so? I just checked etc is much cheaper then eth, why if etc is better coin?

It is true that bitcoin has serious problems to solve these days, and it is also true that some other cryptos have come forward by offering certain alternatives that correct the bitcoin weaknesses, but most of those coins have failed at the time to jump into the real world to become useful currencies to buy and sell goods and services.

I do not know if one day the bitcoin will lose its validity and become nothing, but in the meantime I am convinced that it still has a lot of room to grow and improve, so I will continue to work hard to increase my bitcoins, without leaving aside the possibility of investing in some other altcoin to diversify my money.

Bitcoin has serious technical problems now related to capacity. It is almost unusable for small and even modest transactions, and the fees are astronomical. This is going to have to get fixed. If bitcoin survives this test, then its value in the future may be beyond what most can imagine.

Bitcoin will be the alternative to Etherum, therefore an altcoin. You lose primary spot you become an alt.

In the term of coins all of them are made as alternative to Bicoin therefore we call them altcoins.
But..Ford made first car and now we have hundrets of car brands(and plenty of them are more reckognized than ford).
If it was first it doesnt mean some other cant overtake it.

Basically if bitcoin pumps, most of the altcoins drops like this recently most of the altcoins dumps and most of the newbie and trading selling their coins that will lead also into more dumping though i dont agree that bitcoin will be alts because bitcoin will be the most good and best digital currency online and most of the altcoin is relying on bitcoin so it wont happen

It's not for the first time that bitcoin has received so much criticism, it has received much more in the past and has always survived. I wonder despite criticizing bitcoin so much the critics love for it never ceases or comes to an end. If they are offered some of it (bitcoin) they readily accept it and that's the only reason they are here on bitcointalk.

This is what happen when lot of newbies are involved in new projects, on small bad sign insecurity will breake them, they will sell all immediately. Take a look at XMR, CLOAK, NAV, those projects have mature investrors which know much about value they holding..They have showed integrity and announced independency from BTC.
