Title: (BOUNTY: 2BTC & Dirt3 Game) Get Afterburner or Similar running on quadfire
Post by: mike85123 on June 23, 2011, 02:40:01 AM
If anyone can get MSI Afterburner running with 4 cards, I will send 1 BTC & code for download of Dirt3 game I got bundled with one of my cards...

Three cards works just fine. Afterburner starts right up. Once I put the 4th card in, I get "Failed to initilize display driver wrapper!" All 4 cards show up in device manager and GUIMiner. Just need Afterburner to control the speed and fans now.

MSI 890FXA-GD70
Sempron
2GB Ram
4x xfx6870

Once I have a solution that works, I will promptly send over a BTC and PM you with the download code for Dirt3.

Let me know if you need any more details from me.
Thanks,
Mike

Same problem happened to me:

1-First check that Device manager show all 4 cards without any messages listed (pretty important, because it confirms whether the hardware is properly installed/if at all and seen correctly by windows)

2.Go to control panel and uninstall all the listings for AMD/ATI. Then:

Search for this 4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 in reg edit. Delete the the whole folder, it will fail but instead delete all the listings underneath, which is what we want.

3. Reboot. The system might/fail loading windows while it installs the default drivers. Once you're running the default drivers install 11.5b or 11.6, reboot. Instal caps 5.

This should get rid of your problem. If this solves your problem i really hope you send me the bounty  ;D

I tried this based on the forum post at overclock.net.  Just made windows hang on the reboot... If you can eleaborate a bit more on these instructions, maybe that would help.

for me windows took a little to load but after that everything was fine.

Maybe using the last drive swepper can solve your problem (not the one from guru3d, this one: http://phyxion.net/item/driver-sweeper.html (http://phyxion.net/item/driver-sweeper.html))
Use drive swepper like this: uninstal ati/amd stuff from control panel, reboot in safe mode, run drive swepper and erase everything amd/ ati related, reboot, then instal driver 11.6 reboot and install caps.

Still nothing.  Followed your instructions with the driver sweeper in safemode. Installed the caps. still getting the same error. Anyone have any other programs they are using to control overclocking and fan speed for 4 cards? There has to be someone that has done it...

you can try the old Rivatuner: http://downloads.guru3d.com/RivaTuner-v2.09-download-163.html (http://downloads.guru3d.com/RivaTuner-v2.09-download-163.html)
How to use guide is here: http://www.guru3d.com/article/rivatuner-20-fan-speed--overclock-guide/ (http://www.guru3d.com/article/rivatuner-20-fan-speed--overclock-guide/)

or

Try using Trixx get the latest one here: http://www.sapphiretech.com/ssc/TriXX/

Does Riva work with ATI cards? Does Trixx work even if I don't have sapphire cards (I have xfx and his)?

Yes and yes.

Try using Trixx first.

Just tried trixx and everything started fine, no errors. But it looks like trixx is only seeing my 4th card. Can only control the fan on the 4th card and based on my mining speed it is only OCing the 4th one too. I have tried the two latest versions of it. Any ideas?

took the 4th card out and Trixx saw the other three...  this fourth card is starting to piss me off...

Why not just use the the catalyst software to set your fan speed ?

I was having problems with it not starting right. So GUIminer would start mining and before I knew it the temps would be through the roof. Maybe I will have to go back to see if I can get CCC to be more reliable since I am striking out with everything else.  Wish someone had a way to get afterburner working, I loved the monitoring functionality and putting the temps in the tray.

ccc allows you to set a constant speed ?

Pretty sure I was able to set a constant fan %. Could be wrong though. I gave up on CCC pretty quickly.

Good luck!

he already tried that, no luck  :-[

I found this post with the same problem (4 cards, 3 xfx and 1 his) and i think the 4th card is the problem: http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=346175 (http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=346175)

look at post #10, somehow 4 reference cards (i think the problem is XFX cards) can screw the setup and you need 1 non reference card for it to work. This can explain your problem with trixx and afterburner.

Try Beta 4. It was just released today. It fixed the PowerTune problem. You can read about bug fixes and report bugs in the Guru3D thread. That is your best chance for a fix.

Beta 4 was released a few days ago. That was one of the first things I tried. Thank for the thought though. What does everyone else do with quad fire setups????

Anyone able to do this? I found this guy on youtube that did it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEGIZOO-HYY).

What is everyone with 4 card setups doing (other than linux)???

Will up my bounty to 2 BTC for a fast fix!

I have one machine running using CCC, but it is inconsistent and can't OC/UC like I want.

Are you using dummy heads or are you just switching monitors around? Try taking off the crossfire bridge and running each card individually.

As in -- Plug your monitor into card 1, adjust it with msi afterburner, switch to card 2, adjust, switch to card 3, adjust, switch to card 4, adjust. Otherwise, you might want to grab dummyheads/make 'em yourself for the solution.

That'd would be how I'd go about it. Remember, each card has it's OWN max clock rate (hardware quality differs between cards), so that's why I run each card by it's self. (I can have 1 card clocked to 1000 mhz, another clocked at 990, another clocked at 975..etc)

Using null vga adapters on all but the one with the monitor.  windows sees all of the cards (I can even control all of the cards with CCC, but it is so inconsistent).  Afterburner won't even start up, so I can't do what you are suggesting by trying each card.

Mike,

I found a workaround to my problem.  It should work for you as well.  It's a bit of a hack, but it works.

Here's what I did:

download AOCLBF: http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=10264.0

keep a downloaded copy around somewhere.

Install it as instructed (basically place the 3 files into your guiminer filder location).

You DON'T have to use this miner for mining, but it will allow you to OC and set fans :)

The very first time you run it, it will ask you how many miners to create.  I specify the number of GPUs, not the cards, so for the 2 6990 + 6850, I tell it to create 5.

You will see "client tabs" (ignore these for the moment) and a tab for each GPU.  Here I use the GPU-related tabs to set my clocks and fans.  I answer "no" to setting on next startup.

After I OC the way I want, I simply start my usual miners.  I do not use the AOCLBF for mining (at least not yet).

Here comes the tricky part.  On next restart/reset, this program most likely will not detect your GPUs correctly.  This is probably why MSI Afterburner, trixc and others don't work either.

What I do at this point is delete all the files related to AOCLBF (this includes a clocks.xxx file) and reboot.

After reboot I repeat the install process and keep going.

:)

I hope this solves your issue Mike.

If this helps, feel free to send me that bounty, but I won't cry if you don't: 15KwcqgcxjsXx6XGJgv56Ps6AjbeQP3Ge5

Just switch to CGminer and drop afterburnner or trixx.
Cgminer has fan/clock/core and other controls built in. if you need help on the setup, let me know.
