Title: BTC Gold Fork Wallet
Post by: TensorBloom on October 09, 2017, 02:13:10 PM
After searching around and finding about 100 different opinions on where to store BTC for the October 25th fork, so as to receive the BTC Gold... I have still yet to find a solid answer.

I even messaged blockchain.info and they said they will NOT be honoring the BTC Gold. For the BTC Cash fork I just left my BTC in Poloniex and received the BTC Cash tokens as I should, but now I am seeing discussion that Poloniex, Bittrex and none of the exchanges are going to be honoring the BTC Gold fork.

So. What software wallet to store BTC in to guarantee we receive the full amount of BTC Gold after the fork?

I would advise  you to keep them in a wallet you control the private keys for.  Electrum, Jaxx, Exodus, Ledger Nano S hardware wallet, ect.  That way, on 11/1 when the split happens, all you have to do is wait for some tutorial videos to come out on Youtube (usually how I do it personally) and then split the coins when you feel comfortable doing so.  Doing this makes it impossible for an exchange to basically say, No, we will not split your coins for you.

I have read that specifically, Jaxx will not be honoring the BTC Gold split. I will message Electrum and see what they have to say.

Jaxx gives you a word list to backup, this is enough to export your private keys. Electrum has the option to export them directly.
That being said, I suspect the snapshot has been taken already so Bitcoin Gold creators can premine. That also means moving your Bitcoins to another wallet now is too late for this fork. But this is just speculation based on some of the unconfirmed sources I read.

Exodus will work just fine.  You can export your Bitcoin private keys from Exodus (there is a secret developer's menu, Alt Shift D) , then import them into a BitCoin Gold Wallet.  It is advisable, though, to move your original bitcoins away from that wallet before you the same private key to claim your Bitcoin Gold, just in case it's a scam wallet ...

If Kraken is not supporting the BitCoin Gold fork, then you need to move them off of that exchange before the fork.

The only one to be sure : Bitcoin core !
With Bitcoin core, your Bitcoins are in the BTC blockchain and you are the owner of the private key.
Don't forget : The owner of your bitcoin is only the owner of the private key.

Most  probably some of exchanges will give you the Bitcoin Gold as they gave people their Bitcoin Cash too. But it's better to move all your bitcoins to an address which you know its private key

^ I have a little bit of Bitcoin in Kraken, poloneix, and Vip.Bitcoin.co.id. when Herdfork Bitcoin Cash happens, I got BCH for free from VIP. hopefully, it will happen again after Bitcoin Gold circulating in the market.

I will keep my Bitcoin on the exchanger site. :)

I agree with that action, it is much safer than left in uncertaint wallet or exchangers that you don't have private key. I hate hardfork, they want to turn my gold with iron. BTC gold isn;t gold but iron. They should give name BTC iron or plastic. I think those name are better.

We'll be following the official updates to understand this. They don't have to announce that they will distribute bitcoin gold ones to the people having bitcoin. They must tell this first.

Bittrex gave out Bitcoin Cash to those holding Bitcoin in the previous fork (I got mine) so I'm hoping they will do the same with Bitcoin Gold.
I'm going to wait until there is a formal announcment form Bittrex before moving Bitcoin from my electrum wallet.
There was a method to use Electrum & Electron Cash wallets to get the forked coin but I've not tried it - anyone here tried it ?
Will the Electum/Electron trick work with Bitcoin Gold ?

It is good to keep your bitcoin in a wallet which you're the holder of the address private keys and 3 wallet I knew that have signed an agreement to adopt and
implement a contentious bitcoin gold fork are coinbase, xapo and bitpay. But the current negativity said about this fork don't give room for more supporter of the fork. Let's keep fingers cross though cause more supporter will step in.

Electron Cash has nothing to do with the Electrum team, it is a fork and it has unsigned binaries, not safe to install on your main computer.

Use a spare computer to deal with hardforks, trust no one and be paranoid. Excess security is better when it comes to bitcoin. So just wait for the official Bitcoin Gold client to be released and use that.

If you want to import seeds, you will have to wait for someone to release an Electrum fork.

it is a good thung that you are actively searching for different wallets to find the best. Also, you did a great job losting this here so a lot of newbies like me can get references on which wallets we should use. But i think we should consider looking for a waet that can be both used offline and supports the upcoming fork. Because i certainly don't trust online wallets. I maybe too paranoid but i just can't risk my hard earned bitcoins just for an altclin that doesnt seem to havs that much potential.

Thanks for the heads-up on the Electron Cash wallet. Looks like I'll just hold my Bitcoin in the Electrum wallet, better safe than sorry, and wait until there's more solid information about which wallet or exchange will guarantee getting the Bitcoin Gold bonus - if at all.

i guess freebitcoin is good place to store bitcoins for getting bitcoin gold. as far they was paid us bitcoin cash balances.

freebitcoin says :

HARD FORK POLICY
Bitcoin has 2 hard forks planned in the near future - "Bitcoin Gold" and "Bitcoin Segwit 2x". As we have done with the "Bitcoin Cash" hard fork in the past, we shall support withdrawals of all hard fork coins as long as they are viable - ie. have wallet support, a working blockchain and straightforward redemption policies.

here is url for freebitcoin site :
http://1ink.cc/ZMR (http://1ink.cc/ZMR)

good luck!

I'll have a look into Freebitcoin as somewhere to store my Bitcoin during the fork, haven't heard of them, but then there's a lot of exchanges out there that I've not heard of so that's not unusual.

Hi, I was looking to find if Trezor will support Bitcoin Gold, as there are different sources claiming differing opinions, but I just finalized the operation with Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash with Electrum so I may be able to help you out on this a bit unrelated topic.

I assume in the explanation below your bitcoins are in Electrum, before the fork. It is extremely important you follow the sequence below and not start one step before completing the other.

1. Open a new wallet for Bitcoins. I used Trezor but it can be any wallet. Do this on a different computer.
2. Transfer your bitcoins from Electrum to the the new wallet. (Your Electrum wallet is now empty.)
3. Open a new wallet for Bitcoins cash. I used Trezor for that as well, but it can be any wallet. But NOT Electrum cash. Do this on another computer (it may be the same as you installed your new wallet on in step 1).
4. Install Electrum Cash on your old computer. (It is now called Electron Cash.) Use the same seed (words) as for your Electrum wallet. If you install it on your previous computer (where you held the Bitcoins before the fork) it will find the seed words itself and you only need your password, in case you did not complete 100% erase Electrum manually. It shows something like unconfirmed or 0 something like that. Don't panic, your bitcoins cash is still there.
5. Now transfer the Bitcoins Cash from the Electrum Cash wallet to the new wallet. The Bitcoin Cash will show up in your new wallet.

Now you have both BTC as Bitcoin Cash.

I have no idea who would want to buy a coin that is given out to people for free. The people that buy that are only hoping for that 0.001% chance to get rich.

I wonder if those who want to buy bitcoin of gold will. The fact that these coins will be distributed for free is irrelevant. Initially they will be cheap so no one to sell them will not. Everything will be on hold. This will create a gap in the market. Then it all depends on advertising.

It is true that there are hundreds of answers in this forum of where to save the bitcoins before October 25th, I personally will hold my bitcoins in my ofline wallet because I consider it as the most safest and easiest way to receive bircoin gold this October 25.
You will also see so many wallets that will support this coin, but we only have to wait until we receive news about them.

If you have even one bitcoin, the security risk of moving your bitcoin all over the places should make you shiver. Why taking unnecessary risk in handling your coin. For me, my bitcoin coin is squarely sitted in my qt wallet. No need moving it around.

I think everything get to be known only after the fork, because based on the splitting chain several changes will be made and make it functional takes quite a little time. Maybe getting near to the days of fork wallet services will notify with the different possibilities.

Everything were unsure now,we might think it ia somehow be like what happened in bitcoincash, but the fork seems quiet for details, only after fork details may revealed.

I keep seeing tweets stating that BTCGold is canceled. Maybe just hopeful posts from others? I havent been able to find actual details regarding any cancellation.

But back OT, this is the latest quote from the site:

"Any secure Bitcoin wallet that gives the user exclusive control of the cryptographic private keys is a suitable location to store your coins prior to the October 25 fork. Some wallets may offer you direct access to your BTG, while others may require you to take additional technical steps. Verified wallets that support BTC and BTG side-by-side will be listed on the Bitcoin Gold home page. We will publish guides for retrieving BTG from the most popular wallets, including Bitcoin Core, Electrum, Mycelium, hardware wallets, paper wallets, and more."

One other thing they mentioned on the web site, although they don't make it quite clear, is that there are pools alread available for mining BTG but I can't find any.

Any wallet that gives you a private key! Very simple. Ledger Nano S, Jaxx, Electrum..
Just do NOT keep your BTC on an exchange because if you do so you expose yourself to the risk of depending from the exchange's honesty. Bittrex did actually give bitcoin cash to bitcoin holders but I wouldn't take that risk.

If Kraken is not supporting the BitCoin Gold fork, then you need to move them off of that exchange before the fork.

I would suggest you get a Jaxx it's gives a list of backup. i think it's enough for export your private keys.
some other wallet you control the private keys. such as Electrum, Jaxx, Exodus, Ledger Nano S hardware wallet, etc

Bitcoin Gold is not as anticipated as Bitcoin Cash. That is probably the reason why there are so few wallets, local and international, that committed to distribute equal amount of Bitcoin Gold to the amount of Bitcoin stored in the same wallet. Poloniex, Bittrex, HitBTC, Cryptopia, and other major ones have yet to announce their support of Bitcoin Gold. Kraken I heard is going to give Bitcoin Gold.

Have it on an exchange. As soon as they enable deposits and withdraws (ie you can move your coins from your controlled wallet to an exchange) it will have already dumped.
This is the best answer . Or you dump immediately or you keep it for a long time.

Most exchanges will not support it, so i doubt that this is the best answer. You should do some resarch before posting things that mislead other users.

I had my Bitcoin on Bittrex during the Bitcoin Cash fork and received the equivalent amount of Bitcoin Cash when it forked.
You could trade the Bitcoin Cash immediately you received it (no two day wait), I did this even though it said the wallet was locked.
The trick is to just go directly to the trading page by typing in its URL;
 e.g. https://bittrex.com/Market/Index?MarketName=BTC-BCC
I'm sure you could do this with Bitcoin Gold, if Bittrex supports it.

I posted this previously regarding how to get BTG after fork yesterday, but now I see a lot of people ask about it here so Ill repeat again:

After reading the information on BicoinGolds webpage I find that you can get bitcoingold on a 1:1 ratio on several exchanges.

The Bitcoin Gold home page will display the names and logos of exchanges that have promised to credit their users with BTG at the 1:1 ratio. If your exchange is not shown, please consider transferring your BTC to a supporting exchange or withdraw to a personal wallet where you control the private keys.

Source: https://btcgpu.org/faq/

You can see the exchanges that are supporting bitcoingold if you scroll down on the homepage

https://btcgpu.org/#home

One of the exchanges is HitBTC, an exchange that does not require verification for non-fiat traders. So in theory it should be as easy as transferring your BTC to HitBTC before the fork and then you should, still in theory, get your corresponding bitcoingold tokens ready to hold, trade or transfer away on HitBTC.

The official HitBTC stance on Bitcoingold and SegWit2x is published on their blog

At the moment the first block on Bitcoin Gold is found, you will receive the exact amount of BTG tokens as you hold Bitcoin on your HitBTC account. We guarantee that Bitcoin deposits, withdrawals and trading process won’t be halted or interrupted during the hard fork. Our developers are doing their best to proceed with all technical challenges without any inconveniences. We understand how important it is to keep exchange operations running 24/7, especially during the periods of such major modifications.

BTG trading markets on HitBTC are going to be open on October 25th.

There is a possibility that BTG transactions will be available only a week after the fork. As soon as it happens, we will make BTG deposits and withdrawals available for our users.

What I have experienced after BCH fork is that exchanges are better when it comes to get such coins in less time. I had part of my Bitcoin on Yobit and the other part in a wallet. I received BCH in just one day on Yobit and it took me about 10 days to get on wallet. I sold BCH from Yobit at insanely huge price but in 10 days the price went down and sold at less of wallet.

Yobit has already announced that they'll be supporting BTG too. So, I advise keep a part if not all on Yobit if you are skeptical and other part in a wallet and hold private keys. After fork through those private keys you can easily avail your BTG. But that might take time whereas Yobit one can be retrieved instantly as they automatically will come in your balance.

There are several wallets projecting storage of bitcoin gold, however i am listing some of them which are known secure enough in the market.
1. Xapo: a hong kong based multi signature bitcoin wallet. Let's you eject forked currencies uch easily.
2. Btc.com:  One of the oldest wallest with easy user interface, takes less time to update new currency.

Personally, I didn't trust bittrex as a storage for my coins as we all know this is an exchange and not a wallet. So as the hard fork is approaching I choose to store my coins in coinomi wallet which is supports bitcoin gold and here I hold private keys and with this I feel safe.

There's a lot of wallet that could be used to store your bitcoin to receive bitcoin gold. The developers of bitcoin gold just require you to store your bitcoins to a wallet where you have an access to your private key. You will be needing your private key after the fork to receive your bitcoin gold depending on how much bitcoin were you able to keep.

Well I don't know of you'ld call HitBTC a big exchange but they will support not only the Bitcoin Gold fork but also SegWitx2.
I find it a bit 'clunky' to use, compared to Bittrex, but will probably put my Bitcoin there for the up and coming fork.

Now you have both BTC as Bitcoin Cash
I just waited until poloniex added Btc Cash to my account...
I bet there is smth important in you instruction - could you please clarify why do you need a new wallet for bitcoins  and so many steps and when the first step starts (after BTC Cash release??)

Many exchanges like Bittrex stated that they will give equal amount of BTG for BTC holders. But I doubt that they will open a market for it. So far yobit is the only one which I know opening a trading market for Bitcoin gold.

Looks like the whale owners of Bitcoin Gold is not as rich as Roger Ver and Chinese miners. They need to sue the exchange sites to list down the BTG. If I were you I will just save my BTC in a wallet that supports private keys. Try Bitcoin Core. If BTG will become available in public, or theres a BTG. Then you can easily get your BTG by importing your BTC private keys to BTG wallet.

I agree, I suggest not to trust any exchange for storing your coins. I'm using coinomi and like the last hard fork that they supported bitcoin cash they once again supports bitcoin gold so I'm keeping my coins here to get an equivalent amount of btg. You also hold private keys here so it's indeed safe and secured.

Coinomi Wallet is listed in bitcoin gold site and It has already a procedure to get BTG.
Check it out: https://medium.com/@coinomi/collecting-your-free-bitcoin-gold-btg-coins-da937d4255d1 (https://medium.com/@coinomi/collecting-your-free-bitcoin-gold-btg-coins-da937d4255d1)

You will keep your private keys.

With Electrum Wallet it should be possible also, but there is some uncertainty how could will it be done. In principle, it will be the same procedure done with bitcoin cash...

All I can say with this things is nothing difference with the BCH, you already mentioned that blockchain, Poloniex and bittrex are not honoring Bitcoin Gold. OS what I'm gonna do with it is just keep it and storage it in my electrum wallet for awhile until the hard fork has been finish.

In the latest version of the Ledger software you can choose to hold your Bitcoin in Legacy or Segwit format. The Ledger team are just saying it doesn't matter which you choose, which is good.

Online wallets may not support Bitcoin Gold, some wallets on the exchange are so. I recommend you save your Bitcoin in the wallet where you can hold Private Key such as Electrum, Bitcoin Core or some cold storage wallet like Trezor, Nano S. These wallets are very good, the possibility of being stolen pretty low. You can also control the total number of Bitcoins you hold because of you control private key. If you intend to use online wallets online, I do not recommend, because that you do not fully hold your private key, which is very important for you to receive Bitcoin Gold after the hardfork occurs.

As long as you hold the private key for your BTC, you will be able to claim
your Bitcoin Gold by exporting the private key and importing it into one of
the supported Bitcoin Gold wallets listed on the official Bitcoin Gold Website.

Well, like Exodus said, so long as you have access to your private keys you will be able to get your Bitcoin Gold, it's just going to be a little bit fiddly moving keys from wallet to wallet.

yes it should be handy enough, I did it for the BItcoin/Cash fork
and it all went easily.

I just googled how to move private keys from exodus to another wallet
and there are a few youtube videos to view so there is plenty of info
readily available.

It doesn't really matter what wallet you stored it on as long as you have your Bitcoin private key you can import that into any wallet which is supporting bitcoin gold.

Yea but what wallet supports bitcoin gold properly now? I want to to be careful with those things. Most users are on windows right now and if I give them the wrong wallet and input private key there they will lose their Bitcoins so I want to test it out myself first with a clean wallet that had BTC after the fork.

I only can find android wallets that did not have an import private key option if I am right.

Dont mind this. Bitgold or whatever they call this new altcoin is not going to be traded above 1USD. It's a worthless coin. Move an and forget about it. I'm not even gonna care about my bitgold coins and will forget they existed.

I moved my admittedly small amount of bitcoin to yobit before their market opened for it and as soon as it opened I was given the same amount in bitcoin gold as I had in BTC. I am not some fanboy of yobit, I had just enough to think it was worth doing and just enough to risk if it all went wrong. Glad to say I did this, within 5 minutes of the BTG market opening it spiked to $970 a coin - I cashed out my small amount at a market price of $750 - not bad for doing nothing.

I am still on POLO most of the time and still hate them for all the reasons everyone else does, but I do like the interface.

Oh and as for the $1 trade thingie said above by dreamer81, then at the time of writing this, BTG is being traded on Yobit for over $300 a coin!

Just an FYI

I had Bitcoin on HitBTC and Bittrex. HitBTC have given me my Bitcoin Gold but it was several hours after the price peak but, hey, I can't complain I got some cash for free. Bittrex, on the other hand, have still not given out the Bitcoin Gold they said they would so by the time I get it from Bittrex it will be at $1 :)

It's a pitty the Bitcoin Gold developers have not released an 'official' wallet.
This forces us to rely on third part wallets and as you can see you have to be careful that they are not just scams trying to rob you.

No. The BTC.com wallet will enable users to transact on both side of the bitcoin blockchain after the November Segwit2x fork. Both networks will be seamlessly integrated into the BTC.com wallet interface, making it convenient for you to transact securely. And You will have full replay protection BTC.com will make sure that all its wallet users will benefit from wallet-side protection from replay attacks.

I think when he says "Don't think there is one" that he is following on from the discusion that there is not an 'official' Windows (or, AFAIK, a Linux) wallet for Bitcoin Gold.
All I can see on BTC.com is Android, iOS or Web wallets.

Novaexchange is also not supporting the upcoming fork.  Unlike bitcoincash, I just found out that I have those in my livecoin.  I just hope that there is clarification of what bitcoin wallet that would support the upcoming forks so that people's efforts in selling their altcoins and some who just borrowed money would pay off.
Yeah now the other forks are being invent but all of them are getting the support, it not about the safety so if you said it is unlike the bitcoin and the bitcoin is not safe then you need to open bitcoin wallet and eth bitcoin wallet will give you the safety key and then you will not be worry about the protection of the bitcoin. The value and the price of the bitcoin is increasing more and more.

I would recommend holding them in your wallet (Electrum, Blockchain, Exodus wallet etc). In this way, when the split happens, just wait until some films will be shown on YouTube. You will share when you feel good.

Electrum Bitcoin Gold wallet https://www.electrum-gold.org

SCAM ! SCAM ! SCAM!

If this was a legitimate Electrum fork for Bitcoin Gold then there would be the Github source code available so we could verify the code.

Do not download this wallet, you will lose all your coins. This scammer has been posting this scam wallet all over bitcointalk, so if you see it anywere else post a warning.
