Title: If you die, what will happen with your coins?
Post by: aitorp6 on October 13, 2017, 07:53:54 AM
Hi there

I have been thinking about this for a while and I have seen the same question in the Spanish thread. So, if you die do you have a plan to give you currencies to your relatives?

This is mu strategy: I have copied the paper wallets in a usb key, compressed with a password. The usb key contains a file with the instructions to guess the password (you have to know me in person). This usb has been put in my house, in the drawer, with some clothes. So if anything happens suddenly to me, I hope that my family, one day, will remove my clothes off and the usb will appear.    If the follow the instructions the will keep all the money.

Any other ideas?

Very simple : coin owner is the private key owner.
No taxes to give yours privates keyx to the person you want : in your family... or not.
That is freedom, even after your death :-).

Quite risky!
I have many usb sticks, external hd:s and some computers. I would not count on my family to actually have time to go through every usb stick they find. I certainly do not.

Why not just tell them, that you have bitcoins, and that there is a hidden USB to look for.... Or give more specific instructions.
Or store a copy in a bank safety box or something.

Nice idea to encrypt it with something that only persons who know you can access  :)

If I die nothing will happen my coins. They will stay on the blockchain, just like they have always been and always will be. Same as your coins and every other of those 21 million Bitcoins.

I would say it just as with fiat money. However instead of someone being able to find it physically you will have to leave them the private key or they will not be able to recover your coins.

If I die soon, a trusted friend will know how to get to my coins. If I die later, I want to make a treasure hunt type of thing for my family (or whomever I decide to join) and get them to solve things in order to get the seed words.  ;D

I suppose your coins will be frozen if there won't be anybody who know your private key. Technically it means that coin supply will be reduced = price will grow.

or you can tell them all about the information about your coins and what should they do to get that. because if anyone get lose that usb key, it will lose all your coins in out of no where. so you better to tell them mostly your family that you want you to give your coin. i think thats a great idea.

My girlfriend has the passphrase though she's still unsure as to what it really does. I'm very open to her since she's the only family I have left around me so whatever happens, she'd still receive something from me when I'm gone. We're not that rich, she can still work, but whatever happens to me, she can just recover the wallet and sell it if she wants. I'm also slowly teaching her about the coin just in case the inevitable happens too early, so I know she'd do good.

Leave specific instructions is the best way to insure that your family gets access to your coins. Almost like a Will, you have to leave private key written down with directions and store it in a safe place.

Ensuring your relatives have access to the private keys is a quite difficult task. While your idea is good, as others have pointed out there is no guarantee they will actually know that the USB flash drive has bitcoins.

What will happen if you die without anyone having access to your private keys? Your bitcoin will be lost forever.

Personally, I have one brother and one sister. So just so the funds would go to a family member when I die, I'd probably give the first half of my wallet seed to my brother, and the second half of my wallet seed to my sister. The only issue with this is you definitely need to trust them to not steal you bitcoin while you're still alive.

I have informed to the close by about the bitcoin and how where it. So they are aware about it. You should be telling your spouse, parents or relatives, friends about it so that atleast they are aware and whom you can trust it. So that atleast those can be used and not get wasted.

Make sure you either have a will, layout out who gets what and doing it in an appropriate way, ie getting it notarized, making sure someone has a copy, ect.  Another option is making sure your immediate family (wife, kids, mom, dad, brothers) know where to look and the steps needed to be taken in order to access the funds if something were to happen.

Its good that people are talking about this, as it is important.

It's recommended to setup a system so that if something did happen to you, then you would have someone who could transfer the funds to a relative or friend. It's basically  will and you can set it up exactly how you would with other currencies or valuables.

If you did not tell your private key to anyone, you would just loose all coins, as nobody will get access to them.

The good part is, if the price of cryptocurrencies continues going up, the Bitcoins you store will be worth much more for your family.

Because of this I'll think of a way for my two kids to inherit my coins  ;D Thank you for that suggestion but I'll probably just tell my kids that I have stored something for them when I am gone and probably teach my eldest how to retrieve those coins if something happens.

I've been thinking about this too. I usually have the keys of my coins in a safe place in my house. If anything were to happen to me I would hope my family would look at it and inherit whatever is left. Now I think about it, I should probably add instructions on how to use it now I think about it. ;D

OP, your plan have big risk that your family may not find USB with your wallet in my opinion. Why you just not tell your family about btc? Or this is secret? And do you think that USB is safest place to keep such important information?
Personally, I was thinking about what will happen to my btc after my death. Maybe I will write in my testament, how to access my testament and give to a lawyer. I'm not planning to do everything complicated, because I want to be guaranteed, that someone from my family will access my btc.
Anyway, I'm still young and not preparing to die :D

It is true that when a Bitcoin holder dies it goes the same with his/her Bitcoin in his/her possession, it will become stagnant forever if he/she didn't make any way for other people or family members in how to access and retrieve it, good for those people who set already their way like a last will testament but most of the users of Bitcoin are young and not old enough to think that they will die soon.

I believe that there would be a company or group of people that will make a technology that will encrypt the information of a person who holds a specific cryptocurrencies then will be automatically decrypt if the person dies.

It will stay in your wallet as long as no one knows tour private key, nobody can open your wallet if they dont have your private keys better to give to a friend before you die.

If you die, and no one else knows your private key, they will be lost forever. This could mean the price for the coin would go up since each coin is limited.

I would keep your keys in cold storage in a safe place in your house. Maybe share with your family or even in your will.

absolutely I did. He says "he'll give his currencies to his family". He can only give his private key to his family to access those Bitcoins on the blockchain. He can't give his coins, the coins has an always will stay on the blockchain.

Good question. I should probably set up detailed instructions so that they understand what I am talking about, but if they can't access them I guess they will just remain somewhere on the blockchain forever.
I am tempted to invest in a Nano Ledger wallet as I think that might simplify their lives. I guess I should do some more research to have a better idea what to do and the best way to do it.

much better to make a video that contains more specific ways how to get you coins if you died. so they easy to get your coins with no hustle because making some clue is so hard to solve, its like a sigsaw puzzle to solve, so instead of clues, make a video that how to get your coins step by step for your family to be use.

obviously it will stock on your designated bitcoin wallet, unless you want to give it on someone who really trusted you of. so try to make some back up and give your bitcoin wallet information on that person you want to give, maybe your wives, or son or on your parents so they can use your coins you left in this world. it may more useful if you make that.

Lol. What the hell? That's very risky if you ask me. Just hire an attorney to settle your assets. So you won't be worrying about it. Just write your last will and the attorney is going to keep it until the day you die. Hiding your private keys somewhere is risky because there's a chance they will never saw that. And the USB or paperwallet might be broken or turned into pieces every time goes by. So hiding it somewhere is not the best option. Just give a copy of private keys to your family. Your bitcoins will go to them when you die anyway. Unless your are greedy af and bury you and yout bitcoin together.

It will stay in your wallet as long as no one knows tour private key, nobody can open your wallet if they dont have your private keys better to give to a friend before you die.

Lol. You care about your friends more than your family.

If they find it, they can take it.

If they don't, they don't deserve them and are better off without them.

I won't tell them or make a will giving the coins to them.

Same as regular money, if you have specific instruction about it to the person you want to receive it then that will happen to him. But if you dont have, then it will just be there in the system unlike regular money since regular money is a legal tender which is being regulated by the government.

I would keep your keys in cold storage in a safe place in your house. Maybe share with your family or even in your will.

They will be lost but most likely no one will know they are lost. The maximum number of Bitcoins will be 21 million but there are lost coins, some of which are known, but many lost coins no one knows about. It's hard to say how much if an impact this will have on price, but if these coins are never going to be sold, then the supply is basically lower because of it.

If you have Bitcoins that you are holding, I recommend that you leave instructions on how to recover them with your spouse or other family members. You could leave this in your will or in a safe or safe deposit box where they will find it if you die.

Did you know this web site? https://www.deadmansswitch.net/

Some people propose it at the Spanish thread.  If something happens to you it would send an email to someone you want.

This is how this works. You write a few e-mails and choose the recipients. These emails are stored privately until they're sent. Your switch will email you every so often, asking you to show that you are fine by clicking a link. If something were to... happen... to you, your switch would then send the emails you wrote to the recipients you specified. Sort of an "electronic will", one could say.

It could be a good solution

Hopefully my wife will inherit all that and put it to a good use. She's familiar with cryptos and shouldn't have a problem trading them if needed.
I'd like my family to be taken care of when I'm gone, so if BTC ever goes to some crazy prices I'll make sure it's included in my last will.

The bitcoin will remain in our wallet if nobody knows access to use it. so my advice, make a special note about the wallet, then save and just tell the person you trust the wife. in order to be taken if you suddenly die.

I just hope they will search your stuff for it. Many families are so shocked by a loved one dying that they put all their stuff in a room and lock the doors. They want to keep everything untouched as a reminder. Sometimes hoping for that person to come back to all their stuff still waiting in there. There's so many stories of people finding hidden treasures in their newly bought houses.

Not a bad idea indeed. But it's quite risky. What if your relatives never ever check out the usb's. I think you should give a hint about those first or you can also give them your private keys if they are so close to you.

I'll just probably leave the private key stored in a text file somewhere and hopefully my wife will find it and learn how to use it, if not, it will be lost forever i think?

I can imagine people now leaving the instructions on how to get their bitcoins in their will, or probably in the near future we will have family wallets, if you die your family gets your coins or something similar.

Interesting topic to consider. I would sell all coins for ethereum, and program some smart contract that my family gets the coins (some thought needed to specify this) when I am dead (some thought needed to specify this as well in a smart contract).

Death is simply an uninvited guest, so one should always be prepared, so that in the absence of user there is someone who can have access to the coins. In the banks, user has a appointed a nominee which can access the resources after one's death but there is no such system in Bitcoin. If there is no one in this world whom you want to give your money, then there is no need to create any backup of your keys. Your coins will be there in the system forever which cannot be used by anyone. But if you want to give you coins to someone then just write down proper method to access the coins with keys, so that in case of your death they can have access to the coins.

I think it will stay in your wallet unless you left someone your credentials. I don’t think they have a feature where when the owner of the wallet is deceased the bitcoins are tranferrable.

None else knows my passwords and about bitcoins in my family so it is almost impossible for my family members to get to know about all of my coins after death. So better me stay alive for good :)

I have heard of a recent ICO - I can not remember the name of it sorry. Perhaps with an internet search you might be able to find it.

Anyways they had some sort of smart contract written up if a wallet address was NOT active for 3 years then the smart contract would activate and move the funds to a different wallet address.  Thus if you lost your private keys or passed away - after three years you would have your lost funds or your family would recieve the inheritance.  But of course you and your family would have to know the private keys of the address the funds where being sent to.

Not sure how it all worked but I am assuming the private keys where incrypted into the smart contract some how.

Sounds like something that would be a good idea - if it actually works.

You can store your private key in Cloud services like Dropbox or GD and write your account information on a paper and store it somewhere in bank locker, encrypt (ex. MD5) your password with an answer of question that you're sure who you want to share the data with knows. Write a will and let that person knows about your will and the private key and ask them to answer the question decrypt it and they have the password.

I have given my wife instructions for how to get to the wallet if I was to pass away suddenly. Instructions are written down on paper in our house. Hopefully she won't have to, but its worth talking about.

Bad idea. Terrible idea. Printing it out on paper is the best way. USB sticks are flash memory and thus volatile. It's called flash memory for a reason and that is it won't hold your data over long periods of time and it's not suitable for backups and never was designed for that. USB sticks are only ment for transfering data not to store it. A USB harddrive would be a better idea. Actually as many back ups as you can make in different forms would be best. You can never have too many backups.

I would store in on a bank a flash drive (or in a paper) with all my private keys and all the instructions they might need for claiming those properties which can only be opened by my spouse or my parents.

Any other ideas?

anyone cannot access your coins and it will lose forever. because no one can log in to you wallet except you are provided paper wallet which print alll if your wallet information.

the most important thing in the world is relations. so there are no questions what to do with your coins ... you need to immediately pass on passwords to a trusted person

Than you very much for your responses, I'm happy because I'm not the only person who has thought about this....  ;D ;D ;D

I have read several responses and I agree with you.  We need to give our passwords (private keys) to a trusted person. But what if this persons in not very good with new technologies? So in the same way, we have to form this person, teach them how to use the keys and get the invested money.

Write down on a paper leave, a will split all the coins to diff hardware devices and whoever is rightful will get the hardware and phasepass, seed, etc what ever is important
Simple like tradition who u gonna leave ur house to when u pass on ur bank balance ?

It seems to me that the best solution would be to pass it on to someone who knows it and does not waste it. If I had something to do with it, I would give it to my friend who knows the stuff and he would take care of my family. You need to find someone who is trustworthy.

Because it is an online currency, which is very often not subject to any taxes, just pass the key to a family member who will be able to transport our coins to their account.

When a person dies, he will already be like with his coins
that one is very dark joke

but, seriously - yes, that is the problem, if key was not stored somehow to be transferable to family members.

Maybe we should start another blockchain storage to store encrypted crypto keys in multisig records to be released only if someone dies.

Here already i planned everything that what will happen with my whole money if I get dead by accident .
I have a friend who is 1000% trusted for me and also I am trusted for me .
I told him clearly that where I pitted my private key of bitcoin and also what is the password system that I use in every site with special character .
In this way I told him that if I will get died then he will call to my family and will withdraw all the money from every exchange and wallet and take 10% of them and give all to my family .

If the user dies and nobody knows anything about his bitcoins/altcoins they will be in the wallet for ever and ever. They will stay there and not disappear.

I think that if in a far future the system can be hacked, somebody could get the coins.....

Maybe its depends on the time and the hackers they can locate your coins if it doesn't move where you cash out and buy.

It's an interesting question. One for which I do not yet have the answer :)
I saw someone say they own lots of USB's and they doubt family will look at them. I am pretty sure eventually someone will. I highly doubt they'd just throw them out.

I actually had a friend who told us about bitcoin many many long years ago (when they were oh so cheap). I worry that he actually did buy some, he died about 7-8 years ago now. I imagine if he did have them, he'd probably just have saved the info on his computer or an email address, which would be long gone. So those BTC's are forever lost :/

I don’t know if this is true, but I have heard that those usb sticks or thumb drives will lose data if they sit too many years not plugged into a computer. I think I’ve heard that they need the charge from a computer about every 5 years to retain the data. Like I said, I can’t say for sure it’s true, but I don’t trust them with my Bitcoins or altcoins. I rely on paper printouts of my public and private keys and store them safely in multiple places that no one will find.

I have heard the same thing, usb sticks can "loose" their memory in several years, due to components degradation memory could be erased. That why I have thought about buy a new stick and change it frequently, let's say once a year. This thing are not expensive so I can afford this strategy.

I don't think that's true! I've had sticks for years and they still work 100%. I would google the answer if you're really worried. You could always check it every year. It wouldn't die in a year!!

ive actually been thinking about this in the shower for the last few days, and i think i've a rough idea of a feasible solution to this: the use of a dead man's switch. if you're not familiar with it, you can read the wiki article on it here, but ill also give a short explanation on this in case you dont.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_man%27s_switch
basically, this is a switch that will operate under the conditions that the owner becomes incapacitated to the extent that they cannot maintain the condition of the switch to remain inactive. the easiest wat to implement this is a timer that constantly counts down, resetting on user interference and will trigger once said timer reaches zero. now, there are services that offer these services, such as sending an email to a designated address / outlet as well as files or anything in the case the user is unable to check in in a given period of time. now, with this implementation, it would be feasible to set a wallet file and the encryption passphrase to be sent to your progeny's email address should you become unable to keep logging in to that service to keep the switch inactive. however, it might be better to use two services, one for the wallet and one for the passphrase for the sake of security in case you don't deem the service providers trustworthy enough. going off of that, it would't be difficult to implement your own switch with a pi setup and some fiddling with code either, might make for a fun project later on.

This question has haunted me for awhile now. I appreciate everyone's responses, it's good for for thought. No one in my family understands bitcoin and the like and the blockchain is a whole different subject. Paper wallets make since but unfortunately I don't know anyone close to my family that I feel has enough experience to transact with the blockchain without screwing it up. Currently my solution is ledger nano.  This suffices for now but still haven't figured out what to do for the long hodl. It's hard explain all this to someone who's not tech savvy.

The fact is that if you do not train your successor, or at least not devote much of it to crypto currency, then what you collected and stored can disappear without a trace. I think that you need to deal not only with crypto currency earnings, but also with training your relatives.

I would say nothing will happen to them because my parents don't know what a crypto is, and situation looks the same as you just forgot your pass  :D your coins will stay in blockchain without you  :o

Backup two copies
Own one
A family member
Tell them how to operate

This is basically my plan of action.  Make backup copies that get passed to the kids and wife, then show them how to use it.

If you didn't made a plan for this kind of situation then all your coins will stay in the wallet and no one can withdraw it, unless you have a trusted friend or family that you share your access on the wallet so they can make good use of it when something bad happens to you.

I think if i die already my coins will always be there but it is useless because i cant even used it if that happens you must have a file to save all your accounts so that when it happens they can still use it , of course you must tell them how to operate it cause its still useless if they dont know how to use your coins.

That´s what I asked myself. I printed paperwallets for all of my coins. Got no passwords or anything similar on my comp. These papers are stored secretly at home; but in case they will be found. (Need to write an additional instruction sheet what these wallets mean and how to use them)

I've always thought of this too. what I did was let my private key out to only a trusted friend who is a cryptocurrency trader too so whatever happens to my funds now I know who could have messed with it and if I'm no longer here I trust he'd do the right thing and entrust them to my family.
That's the best I could come up with. No one has to go treasure hunting for my keys or anything.

You could leave a USB with all of your wallets on it in a safe deposit box in a bank. Then in your will give your family members the safe deposit box!

Nothing happens to it if your family doesn't know it exists

It can be couple of millseconds, when dying happens if you hit by car on fast speed theres not much what can do after that.
Bury of human being on Finland cost cheapest 750euros. It not much, just your months daymoneys.

Death may come suddenly. The way you save USB so that one day can be found by your family in my opinion is less effective, my suggestion to make user manual placed on your desk. Books that are public but the answers from this book are only those closest to you who know.

It is a very good question, what we don't like talk about it but we should.
Never know when we will die (but we will) therefeore we have to think about that.
My opinion: You put your all secret informations (BTC address & private key) into envelope and close into safe or put (as deposit) at your lawyer. After you die your family will get it. Better if you explain in the memos BTC how it works, how they can use.

Thank you for your answers, there are some good ideas but the main idea is to give access to your private keys to a trusted person.

And here comes a another problem, what is this trusted person does not know anything about blockchains related things? You will need to teach them or give there very very clear instructions. And if this person is not very 'technical', such as my girlfriend or my mother, then what?

A good idea. It is possible at this forum to create a special reserve, where participants will keep their coins. If one of the participants does not show activity for 14 days, then he is recognized dead and the forum gets the right to use coins  ;D ;D ;D

Well if you die and you didn't give away your access to your loved ones then it will just be there and it will not be spent. It will gain or lose but no one could actually touch it. Now if you did pass your access, then they will could potentially manage it even if you're still living. So, basically you can put ot in your last will and testament

I see it as more than just my coins. There's a bunch of stuff that will get lost in case my memory shuts down. Having a simple password-secure USB key with all the data someone needs, seems good enough for me. I will disclose the location and the password only verbally to the one that should open it once I die (a close relative or a lawyer).

I think it will just remain in my wallet forever unless someone find my account details or be able to brute force hack my wallet.

I suggest making a dead-man-switch. This can be done by making a cron job to a script that checks some file with a timestamp in it. If the current time is a month after the time stamp, it sends you private keys to a trust person, or better, simply makes a transaction to them and broadcasts it. While your alive, you update the file every few weeks such that the time stamp is never a month old. When your dead the file is no longer updated and a month latter the funds are released.

Of course you need to leave instructions for you family to keep your computer turned on, or put this on a server.

Also I haven't done actually done this, but I know of people who have.

I suggest people should share doing Bitcoin to a family or friend so that if an accident or something bad happens, someone can continue with what you have started. Especially the accounts that ranked up to Hero or Legendary. Share your knowledge about Bitcoin with someone close to you so that your Bitcoin will be safe in case something happens and you'll feel good because you know that it would be a blessing to the person you entrusted it.

I suppose your coins will be frozen if there won't be anybody who know your private key. Technically it means that coin supply will be reduced = price will grow.

I would say it just as with fiat money. However instead of someone being able to find it physically you will have to leave them the private key or they will not be able to recover your coins.

I already give my friend the Private Key  ;D ;D ;D he is my best friends and I believe him. So, if there is something happen to me he will take all the money and give it to my family. That's my strategy, very simple.

Every Satoshi goes to my family. Hopefully my daughter will then be old enough to handle the millions when I die in 2020  ;D

I let my cryptodata in a safe place, with other valuable info about my assets.
Of course nothing human is 100%, but I think that is enough.

If you don’t share private keys with anybody, it’s still there. If you want your family to use them try sharing the information.

Very simple : coin owner is the private key owner.
No taxes to give yours privates keyx to the person you want : in your family... or not.
That is freedom, even after your death :-).
If I think it's better to say to the closest relatives like to my wife, father, mother and even child all the keys or passwords and keywords, than later when we die they wonder about everything, we better inform everything first before death comes .  :'(

I'm gonna give to whom ever is closest to me that understand crypto-currencies. For instance, my elder brother introduced the crypto-world to me therefore he's gonna get them all.

For better way, since now we should give a private key to our families, when we're die then the family can access it.

Everything I do, I do with the intent that everything goes through my wife to my grandson.  My son is onboard with this so there are no issues with this.  To that end, I have multiple copies of my information, and my family is knowledgeable in how to retrieve the information.

if I die, I might be calm because I work with my life partner, so all the coins that can be made for things that benefit the family and the crowd.

You should leave instructions on how to get your assets in a safe and give the combination to the person that is handling your will.
Also, it's better to describe what they can do with these assets, because there might be a chance that they can't withdraw or buy with them.

The best option in my opinion is to instruct the notary, or the lawyer, to keep the assets secure and untouched for like 5-10 years, which means that the funds will be tenfold at least.

Another thing I considered when I was thinking about this is that if your kids receive say a 100k inheritance they might waste it in two months, because they may not be responsible enough. So, what I would do is instruct the notary to give my money to the hiers only when they are either married with kids or they're ready to invest them properly.

I think the best solution for that is, adding the necessary informations to the testament. I don't think there is a better way.

If I die soon, maybe it would be better to let any member of your family to know your treasure in bitcoin. Perhaps they gonna continue what you have started or just cash it out and say thank you to bicoin. The only important thing there is to save the bitcoin. Opinion only. :-D

If I die nothing will happen my coins. They will stay on the blockchain, just like they have always been and always will be. Same as your coins and every other of those 21 million Bitcoins.
Dont you have plans to save all your important files on a flash drive and place it somewhere safe,
leave a letter to your family that can be open or will be open once you die? just for the sake of your loved ones why don't you make them have your coins when you die? better they have it than rest it on blockchain forever.
