You may have observed that everyone is in hurry while on road. How many of you leave for for your work or college before time ? I think when someone is leaving for office/college at time then he/she would be in hurry that can also be a cause of accident. There is not even a single road where accident does not occur daily. Thousands of people die each year during these accidents. How can we reduce road accidents?
What are the main factors responsible for accidents in your country ? In my country mostly traffic signal violation.

You asked about the cause of road accidents, but I'm including things that cause accidents to become serious or fatal as well. The seatbelt does not reduce accidents, but it makes you something like 5 to 10 times more likely to survive.

Driving while drunk. Usually in a large vehicle that demolishes whatever it hits.

Lack of vehicle maintenance, such as rear tires with not enough tred left and hydroplaning.

Using electronic communication devices while driving and running red lights etc.

Parents who raise their children in accident free environments, so the children do not learn the value of safety.

People with small hatchback cars that get rear ended by tall vehicles which kills the people in the back even at fairly low speed. There is no safety rating done based on this situation.

Highways which only have grass but no barrier separating oncoming traffic.

People not wearing seatbelts. Something like 5% of people don't in some places and 25% - 50% of deaths are from those 5%.

Dangerous passing at high speeds. From a growing sense of entitlement and complete disregard to whether it is proper to do such a thing. Try driving slowly. People will try to pass you in a no passing zone because they it's their right to go fast even if it's dangerous and you pull to the right to let them go down the middle in between you and the uncoming car. Look at the Russian dashcam videos!

Attempting to swerve rather than slowing down to avoid a collision.

Swerving to avoid a stopped vehicle at the last moment resulting in the tali gating vehicles behind not seeing it until it's too late.

Following too closely with lane changes without being able to see what is ahead.

Following too closely resulting in multi vehile pile ups (if they didn't bring the whole highway down to 5MPH before that).

People merging in to highways acting like they have the right of way. Tailgaters on the highway, increased speeds on the highway, and short entry ramps have probably contributed to people drining like this. Tailgaters and people merging in will bring a whole higway down to stop and go traffic.

Large differences in vehicle sizes on the roads.

Driving the speed limit where conditions do not permit, such as ice and rain and night time driving.

Using road salt resulting in cars driving at full speed in the winter and then hitting patches of ice and snow that didn't get salted or plowed resulting in loss of control.

Lack of public transportation forcing people who don't want to drive or shouldn't drive to drive cars.

Police not enforcing the law when people do dangerous things at high speeds. A belief of political correctness means that people who do bad things are thought of as being discriminated against if they are punished for their actions.

Speed limits that are actually way to high for highways that are not physically divided.

I believe Japan doesn't have nearly as many  traffic problems because they enforce traffic rules over there. It's the opposite of a place like India.

There so many reason why accidents happen, first, the driver lost concerntrate on their wheels just a moment, second the driver used alcohol before driving, third the weather is too bad to drive like foggy, stormy, fourth, they drive without licenses because they too young or just not educated well.

These reasons which you have mentioned above are completely true reasons for traffic accidents . In addidion to these, not obeying the universial trafic rules is one of the main reason of traffic accident. If drivers obey traffic rules, there will be no accident and deaths of course.

So, we need a change in the way we travel, subways, monorails are generally safer, automated driving cars or other form of transportation are the only option we are heading to.

As per my knowledge main reason for the accidents is impatience. People try to drive as fast as they can without considering road rules ,other vehicles and pedestrians. The ones we should blame about the road accidents happening everywhere is the governments because if they really like to clean up every road about accidents then they will habe some sort of plan to prevent it from happening because the government should be responsible for all the citizens in a country they are serving.

The main cause of accidents especially road accident is that many drivers do not have enough discipline while driving. On the other hand, some pets like dogs on the road cause very high accident rates commonly to motorcycle drivers. In addition, some student that used the road as their living room because they play and play and play without thinking the possible outcome. For me, the true cause of car accidents are the traffic enforcers. Like in my country, even thou a lot of traffic violators should be punished the traffic enforcers just take their bribe money for them to be free and not teach them a lesson for them to not do it anymore.

In my country, I think one of cause of accident in road specially in my country is the bus driver have no fixed salary,, so some of bus driver they rush to pick the passenger so they can make quota,hopefully the owner of company bus give the bus driver fixed salary and benefits. and other cause of accidents, vehicles are very old.

The main reasons why accident happen its because of people carelless of driving. And drivers do not have enough discipline while driving using cellphone that will cause of accident.

its cut and clear..main course is alcohol.in my county( srilanka) more than 60% of accidents are due to alcohol.there are so many laws and regulations regurding alcohol and driving.but still cant controll dearh troll by theose regulations.self regulation is the best.

Main problem of road accidents are laziness in following rules and disregarding laws and other riders on road, if we just care about other peoples life we won't have any accidents in the road, if we care for other people we won't be a reckless driver

Mostly of road accidents is caused by lack of disciplined drivers, they should be the one only incharge of their wheels like double checking the condition of vehicle before running,some instance those who are using phone while driving they can just stay on a sidewalk and take their calls, so that they only have one focus. The main causes of road accident is due to the followings, Non usage of seat belts, many drivers failed to use their seat belt as well as the passengers they are carrying  and as a result many have lost their lives. Also some drivers have no drivers license and are behind the steering driving, some drivers even are drunk before and some during driving, they are so drunk and at that point they could not control the steering again. Under age teenagers cannot be over look in this situation, many who have seen their father or mother or uncle or senior Brother or sister drive may end up giving it a trial one day which may end up in a devastating effect.

Any accident occurs due to non-compliance with the rules of the road but the cause of the accident may be factors which cannot be avoided. For example, the poor quality of the road surface, appearance of animals or people on the roadway, disabled vehicle, etc. Many drivers are faced with such cases but it will crash or not depends on which specific place will be the car. Sometimes we miss 1 second to avoid the consequences.

In my country (Panama), there are a lot of crappy drivers due to poor education. There are so many people that just pay their way into getting a license instead of learning the rulebook. I imagine it is the same in other developing countries.

A massive amount of accidents are preventable and a lot of it comes down to stress and being tired. You might not be breaking the law but stress has an impact on peoples driving. They are thinking about other things whilst driving a machine at what ever mph.

In my country, it's regarding road discipline. Drivers are hot-headed, and not to mention poor-practiced. It's so easy to get a license that not everyone with one should even be permitted to drive

I would like to add something which you didn't mention in the above, drivers got accident because of drinking too much then forcing themselves to drive even they are already drunk. Then, Using cellphone while driving.

Driving under the influence of drug or alcohol are still the main culprit of road accidents. It comprises a big chunk of reported cases and had caused a lot of lives and dreams detroyed or even ended. It is very sad to know that these accidents have affected innocent lives just because of someone else's irresponsibility.

Distracted driving is also another contributor to road accidents. How many movies have we seen that featured characters singing/ dancing or even doing stupid stuff while on the road, then BAAAM, an accident happens! It might me a cliche and we sometimes laugh on these scenarios but it also happens in real life and is never a laughing matter especially if someone got harmed.

The number one cause  of road accident  is not a criminal  that drove trunk, peed or run a red 🔴 lights, distracted drivers are the top cause  of road  accident in the  world today, a distracted drivers is a motorist  that  divert his or her attention from the road, usually to talk on a cell phone, send text massage or eat food etc

1)fatigue
2)bad road

In my opinion, the only reason why there are accidents is because of man itself. Most of the drivers are so undisciplined. I'm starting to wonder how they get a hold of their driver's licences, when they are too unfit to drive.

many accident cases which I found was mostly due to the condition of the drivers. sleepy mostly triggers the road accidents.

Well i think you missed out on one of the top reasons for accidents and that's driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. You should have all your senses focused while driving and these substamces can either numb your senses or make you lose focus resulting in accidents

In my country the main cause of accidents are, the driver are drunk, the driver have no experience to drive or license. Driver should be alive, a wake when driving and before they drive make sure they check the breaks, tire and important parts of the vehicles.

There are many causes of road accidents, some of these are:
1. Driving too fast especially when the road is very slippery.
2. Texting or using mobile phone or gadget while driving
3. Lack of knowledge about road/traffic signs
4. Lack of knowledge on safe driving
5. Driving under the influence of alcohol
6. Non use of car signals
7. Technical/mechanical car malfunction
8. Feeling sleepy while driving

You absolutely have to follow road rules. They are there for a reason, e.g max speed in cities, and rural roads are there for a reason. I started driving, like real driving, two years back. I was always careful, being a newbie I had to, so i carefully followed all road rules, well most of them whenever I could. This sort of became a habit and after many miles on the road, I realised the importance of keeping a minimum distance between the car in front and you and slowing down in cities and etc. I've avoided many many accidents by simply following speed limits and learning to predict driver behaviour. Learning driver behaviour is very important, this comes with much rubber on the road.
Patience is virtue, you might be in a hurry to get to where you want to go, but you need to understand that nothing you see around you is in your control when you get your car on the road, there's so much unpredictability, that its almost a bit scary, you just have to get through it with copious amount of patience. After some time this becomes a habit. You see this with older drivers mostly, my uncles and the like, I always see them driving with so much patience, they make it seem such an easy task. These are the two most important things I try to do whenever I'm on the road.     

For me, the main cause of road accidents is lack of discipline. If a driver do really have self discipline, he/she will not drive if he/she is drunk. He /she will not use cellphone .,He /she will always follow traffic rules and regulation.He/she will not overspeed. If only all drivers have self discipline, road accident will be prevented.

I think there are 3 factors causing traffic accidents.

1. HUMAN ERROR FACTOR

This factor is often the main cause of accidents. the cause can be due to sleepiness, disorder, the driver loses concentration (doing other activities while driving), drunk alcohol / drugs, psychic condition (stress, depression etc ...). In America, as many as 45% of road accidents that occur is due to the driver 'sleepy. drowsiness is caused by the lack of adequate sleep before driving so that sensory and motor nerves so decreased sensitivity.


2. MECHANICAL FAILURE FACTOR

This factor also triggers traffic accidents. The percentage is 15%. lack of knowledge of the rider on the condition of his vehicle readiness can be fatal consequences. Damage to the engine, spare parts, components on the vehicle is very dangerous. Owners of vehicles often forget or neglect to detect problems in the vehicle.

so we keep driving with a prime vehicle, it is advisable to check weekly / monthly routine to the condition of our vehicles in the official workshop, self-guided ourselves by learning the knowledge about our vehicle ... at least if there is a problem, we can handle itEarly sebelom brought to the garage.

3. Factor road conditions are bumpy, holes, damaged. very dangerous for road users, especially for motorists. For that, we must be very vigilant about the road conditions. be careful on every path we go through. maintenance of highway infrastructure is the responsibility of the government,

Many times I encountered an accident, the reasons are usually: a drunk driver, a car malfunction, bad weather conditions. But, recently they are due to the fact that drivers buy their rights, and do not finish driving school, and simply do not know the rules of the road.

There is a factor that has not been included in your explanation, that is bad luck. even though we have been careful to follow the rules of driving on the street. Yes!!! I see alot of these drivers on the road daily!!! People actually know the rules but they choose to break it, mainly because these rules aren't enforced. For me, having rules and or regulations aside, the main cause of accidents are caused by people who aren't considerate on the road. Those that ignore and selfishly hog the road for other drivers. Common causes of accidents in our country is tailgaiting. With the traffic that is happening around, people tend to find ways to just follow the car in front. Also there are times that people changes lang too quickly without appropriate signalling.

I believe that the main cause is reckless driving (including speedy gozaleses and such, distracted drivers and drivers who believe thay are smarter then everybody else on the road). Then, probably, negligence of road traffic management. And then there's DWI.

Another cause for road accidents is driving under the influence of alcohol. Lack of sleep is another culprit especially if a person has a health condition like narcolepsy that causes a person to sleep suddenly without any control of it.

Road accidents are very common in Philippines and the known reasons of this problem was "Human Error" Either they are drunk, or they are over speeding,lack of sleep, underage or unhealthy. But sometimes some drivers are not knowledgeable about how to drive, they do not know the road signs or even their "right and left . Road accidents are sometimes minor but suddenly mostly are horrible. Some problem also are falls into unsafe manner, they are not following traffic rules.

I think the main cause of accident is drivers lost concentration. The drivers don't focus on the condition of the road since they make a call or receive a call while driving.  Other causes, because the drivers read a document, a short message, see the events around the road for a long time, or set up the audio device . The last but not the least,  they may get tired and fall asleep.

one of the reason our country has so many accidents nowaday is because people are low educated and too subjective, and dont focus on driving, moreover drinking too much alcohol can lead to accidents.

Ignorance of the law is also one reason of road accident. Drivers often say when they were apprehended, that they do not know that it's prohibited or forbidden to do this or to do that or they did not see the traffic signs. Most of the fatal accidents occur due to over speeding. It is a natural psyche of humans to excel. If given a chance man is sure to achieve infinity in speed. But when we are sharing the road with other users we will always remain behind some or other vehicle. Increase in speed multiplies the risk of accident and severity of injury during accident. Faster vehicles are more prone to accident than the slower one and the severity of accident will also be more in case of faster the severity of accident will also be more in case of faster vehicles. Higher the speed, greater the risk. At high speed the vehicle needs greater distance to stop i.e. braking distance. A slower vehicle comes to halt immediately while faster one takes long way to stop and also skids a long distance due to law of notion. A vehicle moving on high speed will have greater impact during the crash and hence will cause more injuries. The ability to judge the forthcoming events also gets reduced while driving at faster speed which causes error in judgment and finally a crash.

Distraction to Driver:
Though distraction while driving could be minor but it can cause major accidents.
Distractions could be outside or inside the vehicle. The major distraction now a days is talking on mobile phone while driving. Act of talking on phone occupies major portion of brain and the smaller part handles the driving skills. This division of brain hampers reaction time and ability of judgement. This becomes one of the reasons of crashes. One should not attend to telephone calls while driving. If the call is urgent one should pull out beside the road and attend the call. Some of the distractions on road are:
1.Adjusting mirrors while driving
2.Stereo/Radio in vehicle
3.Animals on the road
4.Banners and billboards.
The driver should not be distracted due to these things and reduce speed to remain safe during diversions and other kind of outside distractions.

It is a common sight at road intersections that vehicles cross without caring for the light. The main motive behind Red light jumping is saving time. The common conception is that stopping at red signal is wastage of time and fuel. In my area, almost 80% of the accidents are caused by drivers who refuse to obey law. Jumping red lights, overtaking from left-side, and driving through the wrong side are so common here, and hardly anyone cares about it. And here the people think that they will become more "macho", if they don't obey the rules. The remaining 20% of the accidents are mostly caused by drunk drivers.

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can be added. Or driving while exhausted that causes them to fall asleep.Also unconditioned vehicle, that sometimes causes the vehicle to have some problem while driving like losing brakes that leads to accidents.

I think that the main cause of accidents on the roads are the cars. If we remove the cars (and trucks etc) from the roads we will have less accidents. To have absolutely zero accidents on the roads we should remove the roads also.

Since technology developed more faster then we though, many people doesn't aware what is the safety ride on the road, first many people still using mobile phone in the car while driving, eating foods while drive, didn't check all the car equipment for safety like brake pad, tire, water in the wiper tank, oil brake, machine oil, tire preasure. I don't know the main cause of accidents, but I do know, that these reason may cause accident. Driver discipline, road rage, changing of lanes, over speeding, traffic violation and alertness in the road. Most of them are fatal. 1.  violation (of a rule, law in the road)
2.  annoyance of the driver or rider
3.  In the influence of alcohol / drugs. This is very dangerous where the driver can experience hallucinations.
4.  High speed. Obey the maximum speed limit available to avoid traffic accidents.
5.  Inconsiderate. For example, driving aggressively and moving lanes without looking at other drivers.
6.  Visibility limitations. Conditions of heavy rain and night make the visibility of the driver to be limited. Need extra vigilance in driving.
7.  Leaking tires. Driver's negligence in checking the tire condition may affect the safety of driving. Check always the tire pressure and also the thickness.

I think Lack of Knowledge in the Road and Being Responsible is also a cause on those road accidents.  Knowledge is the most essential factor to prevent road accidents. I think all Driver's license will get if and if only passe an logical and practical exam. Then if you pass and knows lots of road signs and law. I think the main cause of accidents especially vehicular accidents is the negligence of road safety, wearing a protective gear such as helmets and knee cup can not actually stop an accident to happen but it can decrease the chance of the accident getting worse that could lead to death.

This is one of the major causes in my area. I have seen people driving their cars at 70 mph, with one hand on the steering wheel and the other hand on their mobile phone. Unfortunately, it has almost become a norm here. In any other country, their license would be suspended immediately if they do something like that. But not here in India.

In my place, three people died in an accident today morning, at around 3 am. They were dropping one of their relatives to the airport and the accident happened after the driver fell asleep while driving. Some people get over-confident while driving. If you feel sleepy or drunk, then there is no harm in taking a break of 2-3 hours before resuming your journey.

Please explain the logic behind this 5% figure. Are you saying that 5% of all the drivers in Asian countries die every year? Or are you saying that the deaths from traffic accidents are increasing by 5% per year in the Asian countries? It depends on the country. The situation is not the same every where. You can't compare countries such as Japan and Singapore to India and Bangladesh.

I have a family member who is a very inconsiderate person, and because of that I always thought it was dangerous for him to have a car. Not just inconsiderate, but in a sense out of it. And the most tragic part is that the overwhelming majority of such casualties are composed of people in their teens and early 20s. I am a new license driver and based on my observations in the road here in our area, many of drivers nowadays are really reckless. The common reason of accidents I know is when the driver is sleepy, the break is not working and the most that I hate is when drivers can't leave their faces in front of their phones that will put them them and close to them in the streets prone to danger.

In my opinion, and experience, i think the most common cause of accidents on the roads is actually people who think driving is a privilege. Driving was never a privilege, it is a responsibility. which I often see in road accidents is a road user who does not appreciate other road users, for example, motorcycle drivers often use communication tools when driving, so do not concentrate on driving, then there is an accident against other road users. Drivers with no discipline, drunk driving, poor road condition, poor vehicle condition. Those are the most common that I see in where I am today. Most of drivers lack discipline while driving on the highway. There are also drunk people who are driving and bumping into other cars/vehicles too. I've been travelling from time to time and I've seen some highways that are poorly maintained, and mostly no road signs.

Just this past holy week there is this bus who fall with too many fatality. I believe that it is poorly maintained  bus, it was also an older model bus.

In my country it is not so much fast driving, even drunk driving, but idiotic slow driving. Many accidents could have been prevented on our roads but due to factors like over speeding,wrongful overtaking,tail gating,drunkenness amongst others has led to loss of many precious lives.Bad roads and invisible road signs has also claimed a lot of lives in our world especially in some parts of Africa.Sometimes people drink and drive and this is very dangerous on our roads.Some people also do not have correct training but they manage to acquire driving license and hit the road thereby causing  a lot of harm on our roads daily.

Driving under the influence of alcohol,driving without safety gear and driving without sleep this I think is some cause of road accident.Discipline is the best way to prevent road accident.

The major cause of accidents/ road safety are poor license screening issues and lack of public awareness. If the root or foundation is not firm, there goes the disaster waiting to occur. At firsthand, first screening is a must. Before permitting a person to have a freedom to drive in an open road, the government agencies must be sure that an individual is capable of driving safely and is aware of the rules and regulations on the road. They must focus on the roots of having a license in the first place.

In our country ithere are two common causes of road accidents - the poor condition of the roads (potholes, ruts, etc.), as well as driver fatigue - especially truckers and bus drivers with an uncontrolled working day.

There are accidents grouped into two categories:
- Those that are caused by incidences out of people's control. For example, a child running into the street and the driver having to swerve to avoid collision.

- Those that are caused by carelessness/intentionally. This has so many examples like over speeding, drunk driving and so on.

For me it will be on the driver's discipline.

Good defensive driver would be responsible to check for the basics, BLOWBAG before going into the road.

Keep himself undistracted and focused on the road.

He will follow traffic signs.

He will not get intoxicated with any substance that might affect his driving condition.

A well educated driver would do all these and he would know that driving is a privelege not a right.

Well said! If all of these things will put into consideration then there will be more likely 0% accident in the road. And over all, it Is the act of irresponsible why there are accident happening on the road. And they that drive safely become the victims of those reckless drivers and government.

Road safety awareness campaigns in school and college students and involvement is necessary too. As long as people are not aware of traffic laws and pre education and precautionary measures are not taken properly there is little hope on accident prevention. Plus regular mechanical maintenance and checking  for safety certificate and norms must be complied with at least for old vehicles

The main cause of road accidents is because the riders themselves are not disciplined, many of them violate the traffic signs and many other drivers who make up their car or montor, therefore there are many accidents on the highway. I personally think that one of the main causes of the accident is the lack of discipline when driving, many forms of indiscipline when driving, such as violations of traffic rules, driving at will regardless of the rights of other road users, and many other forms of undisciplined that often we do it.
Therefore, it would be wise if we always apply discipline to ourselves, being disciplined in all things will make our lives comfortable and safe as well as the importance of discipline in driving.

As far as my country is concern, there exist three major cause of road accident.the first is the reckless and over speeding of the driver. Some driver are drug Baron in which they might have loose their noble sense when driving. Second is the bad road which might also enhanced the cause of accident and thirdly is the insolence of some security personnel with their act of taking bribe and all such.

Fatigue is the main cause of accidents and alcohol is another reason, but more important than looking for the cause would be looking for prevention, more training and education for drivers is needed, moreover if every person behind the wheel drive with respect for others life the accidents would decrease drastically.

Road safety must be of great concern especially for those who are always on the road trip either because of work or just for leisure. People for sure does not want to be hurt and die that is why they somehow prepare. However, chances that accidents may happen is inevitable. But I think the possibility of being involved in an accident can be lessen by always preparing and preparing right. We should not be hard-headed when it comes to following rules and regulations set upon by the authorities for your own good and safety. Driving under the influence of alcohol causes car accidents every day, even when they are one the top causes that can be avoided. Always use a designated driver if you go out and drink.
