GeoPin aims to create the world’s most complete, interactive, and personalized map.

Disasters around the world kill nearly 100,000 and affect 200 million people each year. Many of these places where the poorest and most vulnerable people reside are literally ‘missing’ from any map; first responders lack the information to make valuable decisions regarding relief efforts. Developed countries, on the other hand, suffer from a one-size-fit-all-map that lacks real-time personalized information beyond navigation.

Maps used to be all about navigation but today, they are about discovery, meaningful connections, and real-time content. LET’S FILL THIS GAP!

1. Economic incentives to put MORE UNMAPPED ON THE MAP
OpenStreetMap is a collaborative project started almost 13 years ago and claiming hundreds of thousands of volunteer mappers around the world. A crowdsourcing project, OpenStreetMap actually achieves better data quality than Google Maps in many places, especially less developed areas.

But OpenStreetMap’s growth is currently hindered by the slow growth in map contributions and map contributors.

To fuel the power of the crowd and incentivize broader local participation, GeoPin implements a reward mechanism that rewards GIN tokens to mappers anywhere in the world to put MORE UNMAPPED ON THE MAP.

2. Real-time personalized information beyond navigation
Besides map data, real-time information enriches the static base map with local and cultural pulses. GeoPin aims to bring together vibrant local communities everywhere in the world to crowdsource interesting local destinations, events, and specialties. Anyone can create a PinChannel to start pinning on a specific type of destination with other pinners. Similar to subreddits on Reddit, all PinChannels on GeoPin are user-generated.

For example, someone can create a PinChannel to start pinning pop-up farmer markets; or a celebrity can create her PinChannel to share places that she goes to with her fans.

3. Control of your map and what you see
On GeoPin, you can subscribe to any number of PinChannels and only see pins in those PinChannels. Pins can be transient. If there’s no additional interest for a certain period of time, a pin will be hidden.

For example, if you’re interested in “Dishes you can’t miss”, subscribe to that PinChannel, get informed and share with others about wonderful dishes you spot in restaurants in your city, and most importantly HAVE FUN!

4. A financially sustainable open-source model
GeoPin monetizes the real-time personalized information layer to reward both mappers and pinners while keeping the base map data free for all, honoring the noble spirit of OpenStreetMap.

Advertisers, app developers, and agencies who want to access GeoPin’s data or audience need to purchase GIN tokens. 10% of GIN tokens earned will be burnt as transaction fee while the remaining will be paid to GEOPinners. GEOMappers are compensated with newly mined GIN tokens through a fixed-rate inflation scheme.

5. Mass adoption of cryptocurrencies
We have been asking ourselves for a long time about a killer app that can introduce cryptocurrencies to the rest of the world and bring more people into our community.

Maps is the most used application by people everywhere. So the target user group of GeoPin is not only big but also proven: popular map applications claim almost one third of the world population as their monthly active users (or about 2 billions+ people). GeoPin aims to make these users first time owners of a crypto currency - the GIN token.

6. Map data secured on the blockchain
The GeoPin blockchain is used to save all edits to the world map, guaranteeing decentralization and censor-proofness of the world map in all circumstances.

The integrity and tamper-proofness of our world map is more important than ever when it’s going to be used by self-driving cars and other autonomous machines.

Geo Mappers are users who contribute map data to the base map such as adding a lake, a building, a road, etc.

Geo Pinners are users who curate existing locations on the map to specific PinChannels to enrich them with real-time information and personal perspectives about the places.

GeoPin monetizes the real-time information layer to reward both Geo Mappers and Geo Pinners while keeping the base map data free for all, honoring the noble spirit of OpenStreetMap.

Check out some of the statistics we have posted on our site and Medium.  We also have a lot coming in our whitepaper.  To answer your question directly, Yes.  There is so much unmapped.  There are developing countries, traffic conditions, gas price knowledge, and emergency response that all demand more and better mapping.

I understand the argument, but look at the tech industry.  Mapping is a hot topic and investment, in part due to the growth in automation of vehicles and our globalized world demanding a better solution. 

And yes, about slack.  We will likely restrict postings when we get close to crowdsale time.

Thanks for the question! I want to add a few things to what my teammate has pointed out.

1. There are still a lot of places unmapped, especially in third world countries. The good map coverage in the United States oftentimes blinds us from this fact that things could be very very different elsewhere.

This statistic may be a bit outdated but in 2011, Google estimated that only 30% of the world is well mapped.

Here are a few concrete and more recent examples about missing maps in places around the world (note that some countries cited below are not even third world countries but quite developed ones):

  Reading into the comments of this video also reveals many interesting problems of Google Maps that we believe GeoPin can solve with our crowdsourcing approach that relies on local contributors:
  I live in Sweden (which is not a third world country), but when you get outside the cities and big highways Google Maps have loads of interesting issues. Such as:
  * Roads that are misplaced by a few hundred meters, causing "return to road" navigation all the time
  * Sometimes missing small roads completely.
  * And for me the most important issue: the inability to start navigation when there is no internet connection (happens to me, I like hiking, and sometimes even the parking spaces at national parks completely lacks mobile coverage)
  

2. We are not worry of running out of places to map since a digital map is a living, breathing project. A good map needs continuous updates to account for landscape changes because of of urban development, natural disasters, or even regular road block / maintenance by local authorities.

As an example, this article, dated 2 months ago, shows the problem of Google Maps not updating road information in a timely manner to account for road projects in Ireland. (http://www.highlandradio.com/2017/09/11/council-should-inform-google-maps-when-major-road-projects-are-complete-mc-bride/)

Also, besides outdoor mapping, indoor mapping is also an emerging greenfield that no corporation has gotten a decent solution. This is also where we see a lot of opportunity for GeoPin, with the help of local contributors, to outperform the giants since indoor knowledge is inherently very local. See below an example of Google Maps’ indoor mapping issue.

• “...in Austria, which is a FIRST world country. And my home addresse is not available because Google Maps doesn't know there are also larger buildings that can hold one house number but be separated in "stairs" or "entrances" which are numbered individually. But Maps doesn't know this at all. Since there is a house opposite my building, I use that house number to navigate home. 3. In my opinion, there’s actually not enough competition in this space. Most mobile applications currently are using either one of these two map services: Google Maps or OpenStreetMap.

Google Maps is actually charging enterprises very expensively; that’s why companies started to switch from Google Maps to OpenStreetMap in 2012.

Apple is actually using OpenStreetMap and TomTom for their map, which means they don’t really involve in the data collection activity for mapping.

For Garmin, we don’t consider them as our competitor since their business centers around GPS technology and hardware. They do offer maps as a fully packaged solution instead of allowing integration to enable other applications; and as my teammate pointed out, their maps are expensive for the modern world.

Tom Tom is actually a premium service that charges fee to the end-users because unlike Google, they don’t have the luxury of using advertising revenue to subsidize for the map service like Google. Though they have the same problem as Google Maps by being a single corporation trying to map the whole world. At GeoPin, we believe that open collaboration around the world is the future of maps.

Regarding OpenStreetMap, it’s a wonderful open source project. We are not a competitor but rather a supporter of it. In fact, our baseline map data is built on top of OpenStreetMap data; we don’t want to reinvent the wheel here and want to stand on the shoulders of giants like OpenStreetMap.

4. As mentioned above, we believe that crowdsourcing is the most efficient and cost-effective way for a large scale and continuous geographical project like this.

Even Google has admitted this by asking its users to fill in the local details to create a map that's almost as accurate as the territory it represents. But Google doesn’t compensate its users anything and Google does not respond fast enough to its user feedback. With a reward system that fuels the contribution and participation of the crowd, GeoPin has a fair chance to surpass the giants such as Google (no matter how much money they have) just like how Wikipedia usurped Encyclopedia.

5. Lack of diverse real-time and local information

Take a look at a few complaints below to see how our digital map lacks real-time and local information.

• “I used it once to get to Reliance Fresh (a supermarket) in India, and I was standing in front of someone's house and it said destination arrived. 😐”
• “yes always difficult to trace exact location and any atm , local shop in India”
• “it always tries to guide me the shortest route without any concern for the width of the street.  here that can be a serious issue since some streets are only wide enough for one car and sometimes not even that.”

GeoPin plans to solve this by letting users create real time information of any type to be pinned on the map into different Pin Channels. For example, you can pin relative street widths of local streets; you can pin local shops or ATM locations into appropriate Pin Channels. All Pin Channels are user-generated and you can pin pretty much anything just like how anyone can create a subreddit of choice and start sharing information about the topic there.

You can't get any yet, but you can gather bounty stakes by participating in their program. There are lots of tasks you can do, like improving their map, suggesting features, retweet and other social media, join and participate in their chats, and participate here on bcf, with signature and avatar text, referral program. The project looks great in my opnion, and I love that they go to the crypto community for funding instead of giving away "half their future business" to some investor.


I am not really qualified to the signature campaign because I support an other campaign already, but I'll add link, and hope for half bounty. (I used Geopin avatar text too).

I think this project deserves more attention than it gets.
It have a great bounty (stakes, but still) program, that seems to be better than the interfaces some other bounty centered projects can show, they already have lots of the technology ready (with openstreetmaps), they have a vision, and they have what I can't understand being anything but a great team.
This is something you can show your friends and family without even mentioning blockchain, and they will probably understand the value, so join, get a ref link, and pass it around for something that isn't just another coin.

Yep, good one, and it isn't on first page, so it is a bit hard to spot. Voted! There is another there, more general - "Places to avoid", that I've voted on earlier, but Tourist traps is a lot more descriptive and often a whole different thing. Can be a fun thing to experience as long as you know about it, or it is obvious in other ways (bet you are a backpacker:) ).
