1) General information, other items needed

WhatsMiner M3 is a Bitcoin (SHA-256) ASIC miner using 28nm ASIC chip technology, manufactured by WhatsMiner (headquarters in Shenzhen, China). Their official overseas distributor is Team Pangolinminer. This unit in this review was bought from Team Pangolinminer (www.pangolinminer.com (https://pangolinminer.com/?ref=HagssFIN)).

WhatsMiner M3 is a standalone miner with a built-in controller and you don't need a separate controller, like Raspberry Pi for example to run it.
The nominal hashrate is between 11.5 to 12.0 Th/s with a nominal power consumption of 2000 Watts.

It weights 4.1 kg and outer dimensions are 335mm (L) x 125mm (W) x 155mm (H).
These are quite usual measures and weight for a ASIC miner.

Technical specifications:
Code:
WhatsMiner M3

Hash rate: 11.5 - 12.0 Th/s
Power consumption: 2000W
Power efficiency: 0.174 J / Gh/s
DC voltage input: 12 VDC
ASIC chip type: SMTI 1700 (28nm SHA-256 ASIC chip)
ASIC chip quantity per unit (miner): 189 chips
Number of hash boards per unit: 3 hash boards
Cooling: 2x 120mm x 38mm 12VDC 2.8A fan, model: KZ12038B012X (front and back, in a push-pull configuration).
Weight: 4.1 kg
Dimensions: 335mm (L) x 125mm (W) x 155mm (H)

Other items needed:
  • A server grade power supply with at least 10x PCI-E 6-pin connectors, everyone with a dedicated cable, at least 18AWG wires.
I used a custom 2100W power supply called WhatsPower P3 to power my miner.
Since this is such a power hungry miner, I highly recommend using their custom PSU.
  • C13 power cord suitable to your country's electrical socket
  • Ethernet cable to go to your router/switch
  • Computer to set initial pool and configuration settings.

2) Unpacking
The delivery schedule from China to here in Finland was quite quick.
It was first sent from China to Hong Kong in November 4.
In November 7 it arrived to DHL facility in Hong Kong.
And in November 10 a local subcontractor for the DHL handed over the shipment for me here in Finland.

Miner and power supply were packed in own dedicated cardboard boxes.
Packaging for the miner was good with lots of foam to protect the miner.
The power supply was also packed nicely.
First layer was a bit of foam and then a good wrap around it with some bubble wrap.

But if you ask me about upgrades, I would add a ESD plastic bag for both the miner and the power supply.
They came inside the box without any plastic bag.

But the hardware arrived in a mint condition so this was not a big downside.

@leowonderful
I finally had some time and did a quick disassembly for the miner, took some pictures and then assembled it back together to continue the mining.

I have some close up pictures of the controller board and hash boards.  :)

I really like how it looks, seems quite robust to me when it comes to the cooling heat sink solution for example.

4) Install
The installation was quick and easy as it usually is with ASIC mining hardware.

You need to connect the Ethernet cable to your miner and the other end to the router or switch device.

And then you need a high power server grade power supply. Install all ten pieces PCI-E 6-pin power cables to the power headers found at the top side of the miner.

If you use the custom power supply WhatsPower P3, please also connect the 3-pin cable to the miner controller.

The miner uses DHCP to acquire an IP address and you can find it easily from your router configuration page IP address list or by using tools found online.

Team Pangolinminer also offers a IP found program called "WhatsMinerTool" at their website.
This way you can use the miner's IP found function.

WhatsMinerTool User Guide & Software:

Knowing the miner IP address makes the next miner configuration part possible.

You can also follow a tutorial video made by Team Pangolinminer for more help.
It is quite clear and straight forward video.

5) Configuration
First you need to go the miner IP address with your web browser.
Then you login to the configuration page.
Username is root and the password is root by default.

Login screen. Click for a bigger version.

The default language for the miner is Chinese, but it is quite easy to change to English.
https://i.imgur.com/oaNgT1v.jpg (https://i.imgur.com/oaNgT1v.jpg)
Setting the language at system properties page. Click for a bigger version.

Now it is time to setup mining pool settings.
Go through menus and find the Cgminer configuration page.
Click the drop down list and you are able to setup a custom pool address of your choice.
https://i.imgur.com/weonqDm.jpg (https://i.imgur.com/weonqDm.jpg)
Cgminer configuration page. Click for a bigger version.

You can put the pool address, username and password for three pools in a priority order from 1 to 3.
Miner hash board frequency and cooling fan settings are automatic, there is no possibility to have custom settings.

After you have ready with the settings, press Save & Apply.

Then go through menus and click Reboot to reboot the miner.

The startup process for the miner takes some time as it goes slowly through hash board frequencies, much like the autotune frequency model S9 miners also do.
After the startup process is ready, it restarts the Cgminer and then it really starts to do the mining work and you start to see 11.5 +  Th/s hash rate.

6) Testing
After all the settings were made properly, it was time to test the miner.
The hash rate was around 11.7 Th/s and it slowly started to show the same at pool side.

7) Power consumption measurement
Both voltage and current measurements were done with HT-Italia HT7011 clamp multimeter.
Technical specs data sheet (.pdf document): https://mega.nz/#!5ssAiZQY!nuixMYOwoYImFX1zfzc9KibmhO2ig-Adav37rRt50AU (https://mega.nz/#!5ssAiZQY!nuixMYOwoYImFX1zfzc9KibmhO2ig-Adav37rRt50AU)

Voltage measurement and current measurement.
Click for a bigger version. Pictures taken by HagssFIN.

Stable result for the voltage was 220 VAC and 9.9 A for the current.
This means that the power consumption (at wall) equals about 2180 W,
when the hash board frequency is 636 MHz and the hash rate is 11.7 Th/s.

8] Conclusion
WhatsMiner M3 is just as good Bitcoin ASIC miner as the current generation competitor miners are and it is easy one to setup.

The power efficiency is not the best, but I think it is quite good when you consider that it is the older, 28nm process node technology.

The miner and power supply price is very reasonable, 1022 USD for the miner and 90 USD for the power supply at the moment when I'm writing this.

It performed just as advertised, I got 11.7 Th/s hash rate and the nominal rate is between 11.5 and 12.0 Th/s.

Power consumption is high in the 2kW area, but cooling fans do their job properly.

Cooling design is done well and the miner didn't get too warm.

This is a very loud miner as most of the modern ASIC miners are, you don't want this in your bed room.

I think that this makes a good competitor in the Bitcoin ASIC miner market.

I would like to thank Team Pangolinminer for a nice miner and for the chance to give a review for it here at the forum.
Their actions were very quick after I started the discussion with them.

If you got any questions, feel free to drop them in this thread.
I will try to give my best answer.

When it comes to the fan noise, I would say it is pretty much the same level noise.

This might be asking for too much but would you be willing to crack open the miner and take a look at the insides? I'm curious about the technology inside that's doing all this work, especially with the efificency being impressive for 28nm.

Good to know Pangolin are legit, had a feeling they were when they offered to give out review samples.

CE and ROHS available?

I do not trust chinese hardware without proper certification.

Over all looks good esp being based on 28nm chips.
re: anti-static packaging, is the bubble wrap a bit cloudy & gritty vs standard clean and clear? If it is (gritty) it already is anti-static. Made from cellulose derived from corn or rice vs oil and works quite well.

CE and ROHS available?

I do not trust chinese hardware without proper certification.

ROHS is mostly respected if silver soldering is used.
You also need to check every components that populate PCB for ROHS compliance.

CE certification does not allow electronic or PCB to be exposed.
Part of CE certification is to discharge High Voltage electrostatic on a device.
This must be done on every parts of enclosure and also on every connectors when miner is operating.
Device must survive 15KV static discharge without damaging boards or disrupt operation when running.
EMI must also be contained into the device. If your radio tuner is disrupted by your miner, EMI is leaking and CE is a fail.

CE certification is false claim for most of miners available today.
The only manufacturer that could respect CE is Canaan in my view.

Wow, 2kw of power for 11.5Th/s.  That's a lot of power.

Maybe the next version will be a Bitmain killer? :)

Thanks for the review.

But considering the improvements to the 28nm process that’s very reasonable. Probably was made this way to be somewhat competitive to the S9 and other 14nm miners today. I wouldn’t be surprised if these guys actually beat bitmain at their own efficiency game at this point. Didn’t think there was still more to be squeezed out of 28nm.

Awesome video as always, Phil. Seems odd they would send you a EU plug even though your address was American... maybe they only had EU plugs on the PSUs?

It is actually a power cord with Type I plug, which is not used in EU area, but which is one of the plug types used in China.

I got the same power cord as well.

I guess they have deciced to include a power cord with the psu, and since China is most likely the largest sell quantity target country, it is then a Type I power cord.

I did not get a chance to make a video at the solar array

I am going to show its earnings  at nicehash

More info  The miner has mined  for about 20 hours

so 0.002242/20 =  0.0001121 btc an hour

1 day would be       0.0026904
1 week would be     0.0188328
30 days would be     0.0807120
90 days would be     0.242136    x 6400 = 1549

50 kwatts a day x 90 = 4500 x 10 cents = 450

so  1100 back  in 90 days

as we all know  these projections  don't mean much  but  not so bad a deal. with 10 cent power  with 5 cent power a good deal for sure.

We are still too far from Bitmain killer or Avalon killer

While competition is always good, it isn't Avalon that requires it right now.

The one thing that scares me is the power supply. If its rated for 2100w and you are seeing a live power draw of almost 2200 at the wall that means they are pushing the crap out of their knockoff power supply. I worry about the longevity of it.

It is a possible issue.
The heat sinks are good quality which  should keep chips okay which should help psu.

My ideas are in a place like the solar array it is cold in the fall and winter.
So this gear should be fine.  But next June July August when it is hot this is going to struggle.

So Have it setup now in a cool spot and you will be fine.

the 20th is a snap shot it fluxes

but  in 46 hours the machine has mined 0.00530320 btc  and  that is good

it comes to 0.002766 a day  which is 19.92 a day before power

10 cent power is 5.00 a day  so this is making about 15 a day after power.

i was paid  13 hours ago

I earned this in the last 13 hours   0.00154375    I am earning about 0.0027 btc a day before power

that is 20 usd - 5 usd for power =  15 usd  a day   since I paid 1200  I need 80 x 15 = 1200   80 days for roi

I finally had some time and did a quick disassembly for the miner, took some pictures and then assembled it back together to continue the mining.

I have some close up pictures of the controller board and hash boards.  :)

I really like how it looks, seems quite robust to me when it comes to the cooling heat sink solution for example.

Eww that heat sink design is bad news imo.

Avalon did something similar with the A6 and what would happen is there is so much heatsink it actually acted as a collector and would cook things the second the miner shut down and the fan slowed. Thats one of the main reasons the A6 were so heat sensitive.

Thanks for the pictures, loving the controller board and heatsinks along with the simple design of the miners! Not sure how true Fanatic26's statement about the heatsinks are but at least the design is neat. They still have time to improve on the current design, part of the reviewing process after all if the heat issue arises. Seems like stability on the miners are great too, shame Bitmain doesn't do half as good of a job on their miners nowadays.

Looks like the heat sink fins themselves have fins. Nice touch as that can easily double the effective surface area. Dragons did the same.

As for no-fans power-down cooking factor because of the large mass -- the A7's also use very large sinks and yes it is best to either stop cgminer so the miner has a chance to idle and cool down or - pull the data cable. Miner immediately goes into idle.

A couple times I just killed power while moving around and DAMN do the cases get hot! Ended up pointing them into the exhaust of some other miners to bring the temps down...

2kw, 100% out of the range for any standard home miner in the United States.

All you have to do is set it up on its on 220 circuit with the proper breaker.

Also, home mining is dead, you may have not got the memo from a couple years back.

1) General information, other items needed

WhatsMiner M3 is a Bitcoin (SHA-256) ASIC miner using 28nm ASIC chip technology, manufactured by Pangolinminer (headquarters in Shenzhen, China).

Pangolinminer
: www.pangolinminer.com (http://www.pangolinminer.com)

Technical specifications:
Code:
WhatsMiner M3

Hash rate: 11.5 - 12.0 Th/s
Power consumption: 2000W
Power efficiency: 0.174 J / Gh/s
DC voltage input: 12 VDC
ASIC chip type: SMTI 1700 (28nm SHA-256 ASIC chip)
ASIC chip quantity per unit (miner): 189 chips
Number of hash boards per unit: 3 hash boards
Cooling: 2x 120mm x 38mm 12VDC 2.8A fan, model: KZ12038B012X (front and back, in a push-pull configuration).
Weight: 4.1 kg
Dimensions: 335mm (L) x 125mm (W) x 155mm (H)

Other items needed:
-A server grade power supply with at least 10x PCI-E 6-pin connectors, everyone with a dedicated cable, at least 18AWG wires.
I used a custom 2100W power supply called WhatsPower P3 to power my miner.
Since this is such a power hungry miner, I highly recommend using their custom PSU.
-One Ethernet cable to go to your router/switch
-Computer to set initial pool and configuration settings.

Pangolinminer also offers a IP found program at their website.
This way you can use the miner's IP found function.

Knowing the miner IP address makes the next miner configuration part possible.

You can also follow their (Pangolinminer) tutorial video for more help.
It is quite clear and straight forward video.
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4of-rFbptA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4of-rFbptA)

5) Configuration
First you need to go the miner IP address with your web browser.
Then you login to the configuration page.
Username is root and the password is root by default.
https://i.imgur.com/jsP7DBL.jpg (https://i.imgur.com/jsP7DBL.jpg)

Setting the language at system properties page. Click for a bigger version.

I would like to thank Pangolinminer for a nice miner and for the chance to give a review for it here at the forum.
Their actions were very quick after I started the discussion with them.

If you got any questions, feel free to drop them here in this thread.
I will try to give my best answer.

9) How to order

Not by much though, if you ramp up a E9 PLUS to 11.5TH it would be 1667W and if you ramp one up to 14TH it would be just over 2KW

screenshots of the gui..

would be needed to determine if it has issues.

9.3th  is a bit low.

do you have 240 230 220 208 volts.

if you have 208 volts  the psu that came with it may not have enough power to run it at 10-11th

also long times matter  multi hour tests not ten minute test.

it runs here

https://www.nicehash.com/miner/16yLHLoeyuCLPMXkVpC3gyrRYvwRGwjKJr

goes as low as 7th as high as 13th  but that is how nicehash is.

So one of these miners make 20EUR/day (on nicehash) and minus power cost .  If I order now I will get a miner after two months. Can I count it will be profitable after a half of year? What is practice with other miners?  (Sorry for bad eng.).

So one of these miners make 20EUR/day (on nicehash) and minus power cost .  If I order now I will get a miner after two months. Can I count it will be profitable after a half of year? What is practice with other miners?  (Sorry for bad eng.).

Also interested.

11.5 TH/s will generate about $18.29 USD a day at current BTC value, without any fees and without accounting for electricity, at 100% luck.

NiceHash isn't based on luck.  It also charges at minimum a 2% fee.

There's no guarantee of anything in the mining world.  BTC may go up.  Difficulty will probably go up.

It's your decision, we can't say whether to do it or not.

Calculate your numbers and give it a good thinking.

They’re trying to make the miner near the hashpower of the S9 but the major issue is that the chips are 28nm and it’s nearly as efficient as it can be on that platform. Mostly just the limitations of the node for power.

Hi . I have bought one . But i have problem in this miner it reboot automatically after few minutes and never reach 9.3th . Also the fans speed are too slow its 1290 in , so the temperature adjust to over 80C and then after few minutes it shut down and reebot automatically . Whats the problem with this whatsminer M3 ??

I had the same issue with mine, I’ve added a vent bracket and a direct 3m duct outside, this has solved the shutdown issues, it’s still running at 83degrees, 11.5/th

Hello Everyone,

The normal temperature for whatsminer m3 is under 84 degree.

During Winter time, FANS rpm should be around 4,000

I agree, if it is anything close to like the 6000rpm Delta fan model "QFR1212GHE",
when it comes to the technical specifications.

I tried to search for a data sheet for the KZ12038B012X fan, which the WhatsMiner has both in front and rear,
but I was unable to find anything.

Delta QFR1212GHE has a max airflow value of 210.4 CFM.

No, you can't quiet down this miner by changing a fan. Sorry.

It produces a lot of heat and needs a high level of cooling.

Loud loud loud loud loud.

and hot hot hot.

these need lots of air flow with good air pressure.  do not alter fans.

sound proof  videos for loud hot miners on my youtube channel

these will lower the sound  12-15 db  and not restrict air flow.

six sided rectangle  with 2 ends open

the main sound deadner is this

below for short proofing and fire resistant

if you build six feet long and 30 inches wide 1 foot tall  you can do 3 s-9's or 3 whatsminer m3's

yes get the smaller size

https://www.homedepot.com/p/UltraTouch-48-in-x-6-ft-Radiant-Barrier-30000-11406/100656748

and this fire blanket

https://www.amazon.com/Emergency-survival-Fiberglass-Blanket-fireplace/dp/B071744PRN/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?

use a piece of plywood

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Underlayment-Common-7-32-in-x-4-ft-x-8-ft-Actual-0-196-in-x-48-in-x-96-in-431178/203183010

make it  1 ft by 6 ft     four pieces

you have a left over  piece 2 ft by 4 foot.

the 4 long pieces make a U shape  line with the liner  you will have a left over piece of liner  use that for the top board.

the box will be 1 ft by 1 ft by 6 foot  the inside will be  11 inches by 11 inches it will fit the miner and the psu.

I realised nobody appears to have any concerns about the temperature. Is 84 degree celsius a very normal working temperature for the chips? What will be their projected lifespan?  Please correct me as I am currently still running on S7s. Bitmain's S7 28nm chips are already failing after long usage at ~60. Although the straight forward profit calculation shows a fast turnaround for ROI. But in the long run, will the repair fees start to close up the gap and S9 will still remain as the more profitable miner.

I've run some S7s with low fan speeds with temps at ~84-85c for extended periods of time as well and they worked for a good year before I sold them. Repair fees could get pretty costly as they might ask for shipment back to China on your own dime just like Bitmain. Replacing the fans with a higher-CFM fan could also work. Just a disadvantage of a high-powered unit, gets more and more difficult to cool em.

thank you for reply, how about electricity watts per month?

Well if the consumption is roughly about 2.2kW from the wall, you can calculate it from there.

One day--> 24h*2.2kW = 52.8kWh
One month (30 days)--> 30*52.8kWh = 1584kWh

I am newly registered in this forum. Been in reddit and twitter and actively engaged in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency since last July.

If anybody is thinking of selling their used-functional ASIC miners because they want to upgrade or else, included the WhatsMiner M3 that are being discussed here, please let me know. My friend and I would like to setup a small mining farm operation. We are located in Texas, US.

I am sorry if this thread is not the correct place to post this. It would be appreciated if you can redirect me to the right thread to post this inquiry.

Temps are good IMO and it is working stable at about 11.6 Th/s hash rate.

Temps are about 80 to 85 Celsius.

No issues so far.

Im really interested in mining and planning to buy some rigs soon, your review is helpful but could say would using these instead of other is more profitable? If not whats the best to buy?
He spent a lot of time and his own money contributing something very beneficial to the community by doing this review. Thus letting us all know it is a legit company that actually produces a real product that works.

He gave you the info, you just need to plug in your own variables like your local power cost. I don't think it would be too much for you to do your own homework and figure out whether this machine would be profitable you.

New to ASIC-based miners I take it?
For a couple years now as general rule they prefer to run hot. 80C is actually rather low compared to Avalons or Bitemain's miners. They are typ 85-100C.

Yes we are both saying temps are ok, and at the low-end level where temps usually are with ASIC miners.

I think that subject has been discussed plenty now.  :D

Please don't ask one more time if the temps are ok.

The power consumption would be about the same, higher mains voltage makes from little to no difference.

You can only use bank transfer for orders valued 5000 USD or more.
You need to use Bitcoin for orders with lower amount than that.

You'll get the payment information from Pangolinminer when you go through the order process with them.

You can download "Whatsminer tool" (IPFound)and find your miner's IP easily !

But you can also just check your network router web configuration page and see the miner IP address there.

Interested in buying several. Any ideas about M3 reliability compared to S9? S7 were 28nm (same like M3)and were more reliable, so maybe same goes with M3? Read alot that S9's are breaking alot and their warranty support is really shitty.

Hello!

First of all, thanks for the reviews.

I'm about to buy some of these miners but I'm a little worried because it is too good to be true.

According to the calculator, IF (supposition) the bitcoin mining and difficulty remains the same until march/2018 (expected time to arrive). I'll earn about USD600/month. ROI of only 2 months!

Can you guys help me and tell what I'm not seeing?

I have the same sentiments too! 2 months ROI seems like a dream come true.

But I guess the 2 mths ROI is based on the assumption of current price holds or appreciate in Feb 2018. Its everyone's guess, but hey no risk no rewards!

MAYBE they buy on the pangolinminer website and resell, IDK. If you paid with paypal, maybe your payment was not processed (**** PAYPAL HAS BEEN DISABLED AS PAYMENT METHOD AS OF 12/7/17. IF YOU MADE A PAYMENT VIA PAYPAL YOU ORDER IS FINE UNLESS YOU RECEIVE A EMAIL FROM SALES****FOR SHIPPING LOCATIONS NOT LISTED ON THE WEBSITE PLEASE EMAIL ---------- SALES @ WHATSMINER.NET) and you can cancel it and buy in the pangolin.

I'm buying 3 trusting in the (good) reviews of the elder members.

No not at all. I know plenty of online businesses who use a UPS store as an address. Especially ones that ship high value merchandise. And if you used PayPal before the ban on preorder purchases through them, you should be covered.

Maybe next time ask the questions and do the research before paying? Just a thought.

I have 220 volt power don't go the transformer route.

if you can have a 220 volt line put in  do it.

if you can't do not mine with s-9's or this miner.

both units are far too power hungry for 120 volt mining 24/7/365

Guys,

300 units available at pangolinminer.com. 200 more are coming to be available this week.

They said it was unpaid orders.

I got 3. Now anxiously waiting for February.

Please pangolin, do not scam me.  ;D

Yeah 93 units available at the moment (February 2018 delivery).
www.pangolinminer.com

The price seems to be 1112 USD including the WhatsMiner M3 and also the power supply WhatsPower P3.
Shipping costs are added to the total price.

I'm in process finding out if I can find hosting available and then buy ten units from Pangolin.

Bought one M3 from whatsminer.net couple weeks ago for $2k.  Paid extra to get it right away.  Then he told me I have to wait until end of December, then he emailed and said their PayPal account was frozen because they wont give credit for crypto (even tho it's not).  Anyway, they refunded my money and said the only way they will ship the miner is if we paid with bitcoin or wire transfer.  Kinda scared to do either.  He said hell give me a few days to decide or hell give the order to someone else.  Anyone know of any other source besides EBAY.
Help....

I went directly to the site for the company,  where Hagssfin posted in his review.

www.pangolinminer.com

I paid with BTC, and other than a problem with my wallet,  everything went smooth.
They just released 100 more today, but they won't last long I'm sure.
I got 2 M3's for 2400.

I'd say, try the website.

Anyone knows how we change frequency for overclock this m3 ?

WhatsMiner M3 goes through an autofrequency setup during the startup process.

It searches the best frequency setting per hash board to produce the best stable hash rate as possible.

You can't change the frequency setting manually.

For my M3's I've ordered, I've decided to use a pdu(220) from the wall and 3ft 15 amp C14 to C13 cords
to the miners. How long are the "Stock" psu cords? I don't want to buy them too long for fear of overheating.

That is perfectly reasonable cable length, just make sure it is a good quality one and you are fine.

Sounds like there could be an issue ventilating the hot air away.

Hi HagssFIN,

I don't have any miner yet, so I am just curious and ask it anyway :-

Say if I have a air-conditioned office with around 500 sqft and it is a enclosed windowless room. I have 10 miners sitting on a stainless steel rack and the room is cool around 20 degrees Celsius. The hot air from the miners have nowhere to go, but I have a standing fan blowing at the miners, is this scenario is not ideal for the miners?

What should i do? How can I improve it?

Forget the air conditioner, it won't help you.

You need fans to move cool air in and also fans to move hot air out.

If that is 10x WhatsMiners, then that will be a lot of hot air to be ventilated out.

Yes, I understand that the hot air need to be ventilated out.

I have an empty office with AC but it is windowless. Am thinking of making use of the empty office by putting a mini farm there.

However, so far no luck with ordering miners and quite reluctant to wait for Whatsminer M3 March shipment. Plus the Xfers.io is still pending my account verification.  ???

Once I have my hands on any miner, I will have problem getting the hot air out. So i might as well plan ahead and ask these questions first.

Thanks! Any ideas/suggestions are welcome!

Yes first make sure that you have the right infrastructure.

Windowless office doesn't sound like one, sorry.  :D

And only after you have everything clear and planned out, then it is a good time to order some miners.

These are hard to keep stable unless you have near zero room temp, lots of burned out power supply distributors and power chords, can’t get the temp below 85o Antminers in same room run at 54o

They are a bit cheaper but a bit harder work. Also use a fire proof room, no carpets etc, I can see these power units sparking at some point

Was a big fan of these but moving back to Antminers

How air conditioning won't help? All Datacenters over the world are in closed rooms with air conditioning.

As long you have enough air conditioning power to cool the air, it won't be an issue. I think that a 24000 BTU air conditioning will be enough for 20000W (10 Whatsminer).

In bitcoin mining it is more viable to create a good ventilation than to have a air conditioning solution.

Good intake and good exhaust fans  system.

4 x 20000 = 80000 so how does  24000 cool down  80000?

answer it dont.

a watt is close to 4 btus

around 3.93 IIRC

So a 24000 btc ac  will not do trick for more then 3 x 2000 = 6000 x 4 = 24000

Thinking on that, you're right. You'll just spend the money you'll make in more electricity. But maybe in the case of the friend who have the empty room could be better.

Wow. I'm not smart enough to do this calcs.  ;D

Maybe a 60k BTU (5kw/h * $0.1 (hydro) = $0.5/h * 24 = $12/day) could work.

https://www.cryptocompare.com/mining/calculator/btc?HashingPower=110.5&HashingUnit=TH%2Fs&PowerConsumption=20000&CostPerkWh=0.1 (https://www.cryptocompare.com/mining/calculator/btc?HashingPower=110.5&HashingUnit=TH%2Fs&PowerConsumption=20000&CostPerkWh=0.1)

He'll earn $277.63 a day. $12 is nothing compared to it.

My calculations are right?

Testing of the M3 Air conditioned Room 24000BTU AC set to 20 Degrees Celsius.
Staying in South Africa it's summer so its hot now have a Turbine Ventilator in my Mini Farm also with 24000BTU AC.
This method of venting with AC ducting works great. The M3 Temps made no difference with the ducting but venting the heat works great less noisy as well.
All and all would say its an ok miner if the hashrate did not jump a lot would have been great have 4x and the all fluctuate drastically from 11TH/s to 13Th/s+
Do take caution what surface you put the Miner on, the bottom gets just as hot as the whole miner. raised the miner by placing 2x thin planks below each fan.
if you need a budget miner this is great but if you can get an S9 its well worth the extra cash.

P.S. this miner does not work on all mining pools so take caution before buying struggled my ass off to find a popper pool to mine after nicehash.
XNSUB seems to be enabled on the miners but causes wierd hash spikes maybe have to set a manual diff or something can anyone suggest the
recommended difficulty for BCH and BTC. or even suggest the pools you guys are running on would be great im currently at litecoin pool hashrate
seems most stable.

Thanks Guys.

I have a fresh M3 but it doesn't work :-(  . . .I plugged it in, it looked liked it connected due to the pools it was already configured with.  I then changed the pool settings, saved and rebooted and that was the end of that.  The device runs, the fans run but the cgminer software doesn't start and you can see that in the device settings.  It simply states "waiting for cgminer software to start".  I left it for up to 20 minutes with no luck.  The pool I'm trying to connect to is the EU based pool for Slushpool.  I made sure that I didn't copy any extra spaces at the end of the "3333"bit.

I recall the device getting very hot, about 80 degrees and uncomfortable to the touch, then the fans completely slowed at some point and the device eventually settled.  The fans kicked back into gear up to full speed but the device status simply does not populate with any information.

Right at the bottom of the status page, the device shows an error": E011  Slot-0 Zero HS 4500 seconds  Zero HS Warning  6  Thu Dec 7 12:59:42 2017 system-monitor"

Has anyone experienced this?  I have restarted the cgminer by clicking the button and I have rebooted the device, nothing changes.

Still decent for people with cheaper electrical costs and it comes at half the price of a preorder S9. It has its niche and it's selling out almost instantly. Was actually considering buying one of these as I have very cheap electricity.

11.7 is highly competitive. Unless you have stupid high electricity costs, the wattage can be overlooked the first few months. Only becomes a problem as difficulty climbs. But by then, it's paid itself off.

I pay .02-.03 kHW here.  These are fantastic.  $1188 with psu included.  Far faster ROI than an S9 now.

So this is the 3rd(?) time they've released for March delivery and the second batch for February without having shipped. How confident can I be in buying? Is everyone here confident that they're not running a scam? Do they have a history before the M3?

No solid history before the M3 but the fact that some of the most respected members here in the forum reviewed the M3. Me myself, i am still a little bit susceptible because they will release a new batch in the next 72 hours. Releasing a batch of 100 miner each day or two in such short time horizon .... mmmm. On the other hand, I saw several persons tweeting and talking about receiving it and they were not like promoting but like stating its stats (and always the complaints about the temperature5 and sound).

Pangolinminer has been reliable so far, no reason yet to suspect them unlike the situation is with the Halong Mining (DragonMint) for example.

Anyone else have difficulty with the Pagolinminer shopping cart?  Have tried a couple of times at the beginning of their 'Sales' and get to the point of putting in the shipping address and the cart does not allow to proceed to payment.  Are they restricting certain countries?  I am in USA.    I sent in a ticket, but don't anticipate hearing back from them in the next week or two. lol

Would love to pick up a few of these, but no luck so far.

I had the same problem.  I found that when I'm logged in before I add miners to my cart I can't pay.  So I tried logging off and then adding to the cart and after I went to check out it asked me to login if I had an account.   After I logged in it then displayed the Pay Now and I was able to pay.

I'm in Michigan, and I didn't have any issues. I'm surprised you got that far. I thought that they
sold out rather quick. Most you can do now is wait for the ticket. I do know they plan on releasing
more soon.

I have had this same problem with both batches that just went on sale and the batches last week.
I screenshot the "proceed to payment" page where that option is "greyed out" and sent it to Pangolin and they responded to tell me that the cause of this is just that the item is out of stock.

The miner's were just selling out very quickly...Within seconds of release.

Pangolin's website says more M3's are going on sale again in about 24 hours so I wish you luck getting some machines. :)
Despite the noise and power consumption I think these are good value when compared to the current prices of other miner's.

Hi,

Some trouble shooting, I have a M1 and its been running nicely for about 5 month now. Last week it started going offline, Power is good internet all good. The only thing that has changed is the temp ( It was in aircon room) now its in a ventilated office with a extraction fan.

When i reset it it runs nicley for about 18h at 11,5 th but then just drops offline. Everything is running fans, MB PSU but on my pool info it show no hashing at all and the air coming out is cold meaning that the chips are not working.

Is there anyone who can help me?

Kind regards

That seems normal, mine Is doing alright on viabtc about .0093 BCH per day, when it is working properly that is.Problem is that yesterday it couldn't get all the cores up to working state for like half a day and it just kept rebooting so the average hashrate was 8 or something for the day...

thanks HaggsFIN for taking the time to compile the detailed review, helpful comments in this thread and other hardware threads for that matter

thanks to Phillipma1957 for the video's and comments on this thread and again helpful comments in other threads

as a new starter in the UK yet to buy the reviews and comments really do help and give a bit more confidence.  when trying to buy for the first time it feels like every firm is/could be a scam and trying to rip you off

I would love to buy 10 x M3 's as they fit the bill, my budget, seem excellent value Vrs other machines

if anyone has any advice on similar priced alternatives please give me the heads up. I have been researching for couple weeks....... still any advice is v.much appreciated in getting set up!

Hopefully it's not a scam, I have the waybill for 3 units, maybe they will leave Hong Kong tomorrow. The only scam I see is HMRC wanting 20% and DHL will add their fees on the top.

Thanks for the feedback.  :)

WhatsMiner is pretty much the only btc hardware at the moment that isn't so hugely overpriced, as competitors are.

Of course you must take into account the slightly worse power efficiency when you are estimating your personal ROI
based on your running costs.

I'm sort of wondering why they would choose this miner design besides price point obviously, assuming it is produced by Panglominer with private label branding.  I guess the article does say that the have their own power plant @ 0.04$ per kwh.  That is cheaper than many industrial rates (0.05-0.06$) in the US.

But a little more expensive than what most of the LARGE mines in the US are paying (3 cents/KWH or a bit less).

Heck, I'm paying close to that where I'm at right now on a SMALL BUSINESS rate - and could drop to quite a bit less if I could find an affordable and usable place in one of the 2 "next door" counties (or grow enough to get into the "large business" rate here).

Kodak has 85 or so miners, and is trying to go up another 300 miners.  This isn't some big production, they're dipping their toes in while getting the money up front to pay for the miner and the electricity, while keeping the miner and 1/2 the profits after two years.

Are you sure you don't have the miner exposed in the router DMZ area?

Or are you sure your firewall and virus protection safety is rock solid enough?

Smells like a security issue.

But please also contact Pangolinminer to go through troubleshooting: https://pangolinminer.com/

@Cryptosaf

I tried to help him via pm conversation, hopefully you get it running soon.
Pangolinminer should be able to help you once they are at the office again.

I updated the opening post with the current 'How to order' information.

Update (December 24, 2017):
Pangolinminer is now taking orders through their web shop at their website www.pangolinminer.com
They should have few different shipping time batches for sale during the Christmas time.
The counter at the web shop page indicates that this would happen in December 26, 2017.

Pangolinminer: www.pangolinminer.com (http://www.pangolinminer.com)

A quick update for you.  I eventually got technical assistance from the Whatsminer guys, they connected via Teamviewer.  They changed my DHCP address settings on the M3 to static address and disabled the NTP time server settings in the device config.  Now it works.  Odd, but happy nonetheless.  Next question I have, with cooling requirements (because this thing gets SO hot, i am wondering if it is even worth having.  At roughly $6 per day for electricity, and the device only makes about $15 per day (without cooling) I don't think this device is profitable.  If I factor in cooling, that takes a further chunk out of that $15 per day value.  Also, I was connected to Slushpool and after several hours the Slushpool dashboard eventually came down from 31 years to threshold for payout to 6 months.  That was with payout settings @ 0.1 BTC.  So I changed it from 0.1 to 0.01 BTC for payout.  After a few more hours it eventually changed to 2 weeks and 1 day to reach payout.

So my thinking is, if this device takes 2 weeks to payout a mere $130, with $6 a day electricity ($90) that means on a 2100w device profit is $40.  That is not worth it at all.  I've been watching YouTube videos where guys are making $50/day using an Antminer S9 with 13TH/s which is hardly that much more than the M3 so I don't understand how @ 12TH/s this M3 is not really profitable.  You would need several of these devices, but one definitely is not profitable by my calculations.  To contrast this, I have 5 GPU's (not even a full rig, I have 3 GPU not attached to that rig yet) that does over $20 per day some days with a smaller and 80+ Gold rated PSU and I've watched my electricity consumption and it's noticeably lower than the M3 and the entire rig has an average temperature of 60 degrees celcius.  Granted it is mining a different coin but the point I am trying to make is that unless you have a mining farm and you're selling hash power, Bitcoin mining is no longer profitable.  The reason these mining farms make so much cash is that with every contract they make their money back almost instantly, so their sunken cost are returned far ahead of schedule in comparison to a solo miner who needs to earn back their sunken costs.

What are your thoughts?

My thoughts are you should have done more research into this beforehand.

Bitcoin mining is not something you can do at home. Its something you do in a datacenter where the miners can be kept cool and have lower electricity costs.

You also have to keep up with the difficulty increases by buying more miners as you go forwards. And you have to understand its all a risk and that drops in BTC price can wipe out your profit.

I still don't see what your problem is, $15 a day still takes only 80 days to break even on your investment. What other investment opportunity gives you that?

Ta for the thoughts but despite the way it sounds, I did my research and I was perfectly happy to take the chance, why not, it's great to learn things.  I do not agree however with your comments regarding Bitcoin mining being only a datacenter thing.  There are plenty Antminer S9 owners who have 1 or 2 of these devices and they seem to manage.  Quite often though people tend to focus on the gross payout per day and forget about the costs involved.  Electricity for specifically the M3 is higher than other miners, also it gets pretty hot under regular operation which requires cooling.  I live in Africa, it's very hot here on a normal day and it is not so simple to calculate what kind of cooling requirement one would need in my type of environment, so as with any investment, you make an educated guess based on the facts that you have and you take the chance.  It either works out or it doesn't, I could keep running the M3 yes, but the payoff is not what I would call worth it, despite that it will pay itself off eventually.  For some the Antminer S9 seems to be profitable, either their parents pay for electricity and cooling and they can run their rigs without concern or they have subsidised electricity or the climate in which they operate is naturally cooler.  Either way, I have watched several hours of YouTube vids of S9 owners happy with their investment.

My argument has not quite been considered in its entirety.  @ $15/day, with $6/day on electricity, that leaves $9/day before I calculate cooling costs.  Cooling costs will erode that value further, as I said it is very hot here in Africa so cooling is a huge factor.  On the GPU rig mining equihash, the electricity usage is much lower, and the rig does not require serious cooling, I have a 100w fan blowing in the rig rooom and that is good enough, however the 100w fan is not enough to keep the M3 from overheating.  So, I do not walk away with $15 per day, it's more like $6/day after costs have been taken into account, not to mention the fact that the machine is very noisy.  And before you mention it, I was aware it would be noisy but one doesn't know how your environment will react to something until you have the kit and you run it.  In terms of the GPU's, I initially bought 8 x GTX 1070's, the risers I had (8 of them) were mostly faulty so I ended up only being able to use 5 while I wait for new risers.  In terms of overall rig size and value spent, it's a pricier rig for sure, but the return is greater pound for pound and is cheaper to run.  I can't recall the exact values as I don't have the invoices to hand but I definitely did pay more for the GPU rig components.  I average between 2300 and 2500 sol/s on the 5 GPU's, they can go higher as they collectively inch over 3000 sol/s sometimes at night for some reason, but I'm not convinced these risers are all that as the GPU hashrate is eratic during the day.  I OC each GPU a bit to where it is stable but these risers are definitely bad grade.  I'll add the other 3 GPU's when the new risers arrive, that'll push the hashrate to between 3500 and 4000 sol/s (depending on my OC settings and rig stability).  On current values for equihash, that's anywhere between $500 and $700 per month depending on equihash value and my hashrate (never sure how accurate these calculators are) but between 2:32am yesterday morning and 12:28 today these 5 GPU's earned $29, with less than $6 of that is electricity.  So while in time the M3 will pay itself off, it's not the kind of return I am looking for, and I don't think I'm being unreasonable.  It does represent SOME kind of return, I agree, but we are all into crypto mining for our own reasons and we all have our own expectations.

Anyway, my point is that the GPU game pays off quicker than the Bitcoin mining game and I totally understand why and all the technical considerations such as difficulty, I sell enterprise blockchain as a service so it's my job to know what this technology is all about and how the various algo's work and their short comings, so allow my comments on the basis that I've done my calculations and research and the M3 numbers don't work for "me" as well as the GPU numbers work, despite the fact that the GPU rig is more expensive.  The GPU rigs will pay themselves off sooner, by comparison, and the post breakeven earnings will be in line with my expectations.  That's all.  Everyone if of course free to have their own opinion of things.

Even $9 a day means you break even in just over 4-6 months maybe longer if difficulty goes mad or bitcoin price goes south.

But yes bitcoin mining with a M3 in Africa with your electricity costs means you are on a road to nowhere really.

I know you think you did your research but it doesn't sound like it. And certainly doesn't reflect what returns are  possible for those who approach the field with more care and due diligence.

That being said, as a technical experience and way to get to understand mining and its ins and outs you cabymt go wrong with what you have done, and if you break even (which you should if you don't start spending money on archon) and even make a small profit it will not have cost you your life savings.  :)

Hi all,

I received brand new M3 miner.
It's been on for few hours, but I can't get anything past 9TH/s from it. It supposed to be 11.5 TH/s, right?
That's what I see right now:
https://screenshots.firefox.com/NTap216qScJkeNZG/192.168.1.181
Auto-frequency is complete and miner is just mining on maximum frequency, but reported hashrate is much lower what is supposed to be. Same on the pool side:
Code:
 "hashrate1m": "7.75T",
 "hashrate5m": "8.34T",
 "hashrate1hr": "7.34T",
Here's whole cgminer API report: https://pastebin.com/raw/MQft9cuB
Boards should have 3700-3800 GH/s per board, but I am having only 2916, 2726, 2828 (GHS5min, just refreshed now).
Any thoughts?

Update on my issue from previous post. I've been back and forth with Pangolinminer support, so far that got me nowhere.
I verified it must be power issue. When 2 hashboards powered, they are doing rock solid:
Code:
Elapsed 4 hours 11 minutes
GHSav: 7922.22

SM0 GHS15min: 3899.24
SM1 GHS15min: 0.00
SM2 GHS15min: 3981.65
But once I connect third board, whole miner slows down to:
Code:
Elapsed 6 hours 46 minutes
GHSav: 8594.57

SM0 GHS15min: 2862.94
SM1 GHS15min: 2917.81
SM2 GHS15min: 2921.11
I tried to use different power supplies, Bitmain APW3++ and Bitmain APW3, to let them power only 1 hashboard at a time, but each different power supply I tested is working slow with M3 miner. Only original PSU seems to be good enough to power a hashboard (or 2 hashboards) to full hashrate. But I can't get 3 boards powered with anything and have full 3x3900GH/s = 11.7TH/s from that miner.  >:( Anyone experienced something similar?
Is my PSU flawed? Why is miner not working with other PSU?
I requested warranty repair from Pangolinminer, waiting for them to respond.

I've not seen similar issues before, so it is little difficult to give any advices.  :-\
Using the WhatsPower P3 psu, have you connected all ten 6-pin power connectors
(one to controller and nine to hash boards), AND also the 3-pin connector from the psu to controller board ?

Yes I did. Everything connected, 10x PCI-E and 3-pin connector to controller board. If I not connect 3-pin connector, what will happen then? Is there any difference in miner hashrate?

But if my PSU if faulty and can't handle 3 hashboards, I will have to use different PSU, and there will be no communication between them? I wish this is explained a bit more by Pangolinminer. What's the purpose on that communication?

The control board is controlling the power supply. I don't know more about it, since no documentation with exact details about that communication is available.

I doubt it's any help, but here is the Whatsminer M3 user guide: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1lWv1mYZoHdSurfNGx6DxBIYj34MawzCs/view

Yeah, I've read that one few times already. It states:
Quote
2. Power control cable (three wire) must be connected well, or might cause the
error to control the power supply, leading to the low hashrate.
But there is no way to verify if mine is connected and working or not. What if it's faulty? No way to find out why I have low hashrate. And manufacturer is not selling PSU separately, so if your PSU dies, you can't have original one, you will have to use different PSU. And different PSUs are showing low hashrate, frequency is not even reaching 600 with them.

I was doing some testing with one of my M3 last night and I connected Bitmain APW3++ to M3 and power on 2 hashing boards with it.
And it was just what I expected, the miner runs really quiet, only thing that makes loud noise is original M3 PSU.
With Bitmains PSU miner loudness is something like L3+, which is way quieter than S9.
At aprox 12 degrees celsius fans run at approx 3000rpm but the sound is so smooth, no swirling sound like on S9.
With 2 hashing boards connected current consumption is 1400w (230v) and hash rate is approx 7,5-8Ths
So later I will connect one more server PSU 1kw that I have spare and connect the last hashing board.
I will leave this one at home (since it is really quiet now) and see how it behaves and take original PSU to collocation to power some other miners.
I expect a bit more RPM but since the miner likes to run its chips at around 80 degrees celsius it shouldnt change much. But like I said, it has really smooth air flow, so i dont think sound will change a lot even if I get bit more RPM.

I was wondering if it will work since APW doesnt have that strange 3pin connector (like fan) that connects to controller board but it runs just fine without it.
So for all of you guys that dont have collocation you can silence the miner this way.

2 hashboards connected = less heat and noise, and it can accept any power supply.
3 hashboards connected to APW3 power supply without 3-pin cable = hashrate is low, 8.5 GH/s from all three boards, average per board goes down drastically with same power draw as 3 fully powered hashboards with original power supply.

I don't know if this is the design, so you must purchase original power supply from WhatsMiner. I do know that my miner was faulty and I had to replace it. I had to pay 80 USD for warranty replacement (if you pay for it, it's not really warranty, is it?), and then pay them again for shipping. At least, they fixed it and send me back unit, which was hashing fine with 3 boards + original power supply. I don't have it any more so I can't test it to see, if fully working unit can have other PSU and still work fine with 3 hashboards.

Yes it can, I just tested it, 2 boards connected to APW++ and one board connected to DPS-800GB (HP 1000w PSU), and it works like a charm on full speed.

Oh. That's great to hear. So it was mine unit, which could not work efficiently with 3 hashboards on, no matter what.

I have been running my M3 for a few days now.

But I'm slightly concern with the boards temp.

1st board always at 85 degrees Celsius

2nd board always at 80 degrees Celsius, or slightly lesser like 78~79.

3rd board always at 80 degrees Celsius, or slightly lesser like 78~79.

My country is quite warm and daily temp is about 30~32C. Night temp is about 26C.

Any M3 user here to advise?

Everything is normal. It likes to keep temps of chips around 80C.
I was runing it even with ambient temp around 5C but chips stays around 83C. The same is with ambient temp 25C. Just fan runs a bit faster. So nothing to worry about.

Yeah ambient temperature is a bit high, but those hash board temperatures are still ok at that level.

Alright then, i should not concern myself with the boards temp then.

Just that my previous miner (Ebit E9+) 1st board died after running for 2 weeks at 85C..

Gotta get the E9+ fix soon!

WhatsMiner is very hot and consumes a lot of electricity.

Yes, we know that already  ;)

If you have a very very low price for the electricity, then it might make sense for you to buy a WhatsMiner M3.

And if you live in a colder region, as I do, you can use the heat to supplement other resources. Performance wise, I see regular 12.5TH/s out of my M3's. The above statement about the power supply being the source of the main noise is true. Bottom line, these are good miners for the price. Can't wait to see what Pangolinminer can do with 16nm, after they squeezed every last bit out of 28nm.

That is still kind of expensive with a 2000w power consumption.. sheesh.

yup i was about to say the same thing....     2000 wats to run it an all you get is 11.5 th ,,

why not go for  the avalon 841 13.5 th @ 1290 watts, i can't believe they pass this off as a good thing .

I wouldn't use it if some one gave it to me and i have solar .

Unfortunately it is not possible to set the hash board frequency manually.

When you start up the M3, it goes through the startup process in which it automatically finds the best settings possible.

The hash board frequency setting is usually somewhere between 630 to 670 MHz.

I have 3 of these and it seems the latest firmware one hashes better than the older firmware ones, hoping to see some improvement between them, otherwise they have been rock solid hashing away and free electricity means that they will be paid for alot quicker :D

I ran into some electricity issues in our apartment and now I need to remove the PSU from the miner again, but the "Power control wire" http://puu.sh/A5Ju6/8173b79b26.png is stuck.

How in the world do you get this off again? It's so tight down there, I can't get a proper grip with my fingers on it. I don't know what to do with this upstanding stick that is part of the miner - or how else you are supposed to use this cable. I tried pulling it gently with tongs and bending the plastic forward and backward a bit, with a tiny screwdriver whilst pulling, but the cable just remains as stuck as always. :(

Is it damaged or burned in some way?

Thank you for your quick response!

The cable and plug are in normal condition. I managed to turn it on just fine as well. Fans running and lights on. I had a hard time getting the other cables out as well, everything fits really tight. But nothing like this one. Wiggling left and right and a lot more force than I was comfortable with did the trick, so they came out fine.
Can you please describe the manner you normally pull this cable out? The only option I see left, is trying the "right" way with the cable and using more force than previously.

I don't know if the miner is fully functional, since I can not make it connect to the web. This is related to electricity issues in our apartment though. Running the miner through the only available power socket will blow our apartments fuse (I know from experience with other electronics that it's the apartments fault though, lots issues with several sockets). From other places I can't reach the Ethernet port of our router, due to short cable. But it turned on just fine.

I pulled it out. Thank you man. You are my hero today.

I was always pulling the white plug itself. My mind seriously blanked when you just pulled the cables themselves. Isn't that bad? I somehow made it this far never pulling the cables, because somehow that was bad. Everything looks so fragile too, but we both just pulled it out perfectly intact.

Thanks again.

In most cases it is indeed a much better method to grab to connector instead of pulling the wires.
But this particular small 3-pin cable connector doesn't need that much of force to unplug,
so I was confident carefully wiggling it out by holding on the wires.

What kind of outlet are you plugging it into and what's it rated for? These units will only work on 220~240V outlets unless using a transformer. At 240, each unit requires a little more than 8 amps. At 120, one of these can pop a 20 amp breaker if it's not dedicated. I sold all of my Whatsminer units. Too power hungry and you won't even make a profit unless electric is $0.12 kWh or cheaper. At $0.12 you'll make $5/month profit.

I think I'm going to sell mine as well. I had hoped I could set them up in our place. The noise is a deal breaker though, even if everything worked out and it was worth keeping them. Maybe when I move into a different place.

Thanks for the advice on the outlets. I used normal household ones. I still live with my parents and I never really learned about the power in our apartment, outside of things not working the way they should every now and then haha.

I've found with mine, it's the psu that makes most of the noise. The miner itself, is actually quieter, than my Avalon  841's.
Take a look at the thread below, for some sound control ideas, specifically for the M3. However, in your situation, being in
an apartment type area, ANY asic miner will be a noise problem. Goodluck!!!

Actually I bought a PSU from amazon (I think it was Beleev.in) and my miner has been whisper quiet compared to the stock PSU, it's night and day difference.  Can even keep it indoors without soundproofing.  Also to the guy above, your freq might have to do with the PSU, i swapped mine out and its been working like a beast with best freq, could also be the amount of power the miner is getting, needs to be optimal.

I would not touch the firmware. The M3 firmware is pretty solid. Did you try the reset button? When you do, unplug your
network cable, press reset, then reconnect the cable. Check all of your connections on your controller too. I have 1 M3
that is fussy about the network cable for some reason, and that's what I had to do, to get cgminer to start up.

If that doesn't work, I'd suggest what NotFuzzyWarm suggested. However, leave the firmware stock.

My M3s would do that every so often when the pool was misconfigured. Go to the main page and restart cgminer a couple of times if you are sure your pool info is right. Also, it can take several minutes for an M3 to get going so I'd walk away for 15 min or so then check.

Hi there,
I have a problem with one of my miners(Whatsminer M3) is showing 0 for fan speed in, and therefor fan speed out is 6300 which is upper than normal and for that hash rate is lower than usual.

but the fan is working(maybe is working because of out fan air flow!, I' don't know, i cant count the speed :D).

I replace the fan with another working fan but nothing changed(fans speed in = 0);

I load the firmware again with sd card  but nothing changed(fans speed in = 0);

How can i fix this issue?
Should i turn off my miner in this status until the fan works again?

please help me,

First off,  why is everyone suddenly messing with the firmware on these??? They are not Halong Dragonmint firmware bingo machines.
Usually, when a fan speed error occurs, it's generally not a firmware issue. Most of the time it's a controller/fan issue. However, with as
many problems people have with Pangolinminer psu's, try swapping it for another, to see if there's a difference. It could be the
controller isn't getting full power. As always, open a support ticket with Pangolinminer. Goodluck!!!

I was contacted today about a preorder of a m10.

I reminded sales I am due a demo of the m10.

Last December or November I had a m3 demo. which I paid for in advance.

I did multiple you-tube videos of it.

I will see what they say as I would like to show a demo for buyers to decide if it is worth buying.

Hello there. I know this is a very old thread but I would like to know the following:

1. Is the M3 being manufactured by https://whatsminer.net/?
2. Is the M3 miners being sold for the US territory by https://pangolinminer.com?

Basically I would like to buy but I need to be sure that Whatsminer.net is the factory in China because it looks that they have bigger stock. Thanks for your time.

Perhaps try reading the damn thread? 1st post lists what you want along with this https://pangolinminer.com/product/whatsminer-m10/ at the top of *this* page... That dot-com is the ONLY web address to trust.

Hey guys,

i live in a country with a super low electricity cost about 0.004 USD/kwh so electricity cost is not important for me, considering this i am thinking of buying about 10 units of M3s to start mining mainly because of its low price ( i can buy 10 units for 1,600 USD) , but i have one big concern which is the old technology of this miner,  i would like to know if i can use this hardware for like 15 to 24 months? as per my calculations its ROI would be about 272 days with increasing hash rate difficulty of 7% per month, considering this do you recommend my plan, i would appreciate if you could challenge me or give me your advice/solutions.

also i have a warehouse to install them so noise is not an issue for me.

needles to say that i am a noob in mining.  ;D
thank you in advance.

Hi there Pooya. I have a friend here in my country who is using this model M3. He told me the following:

1. It tends to break the hash rate too often. He showed me data of the miner going from very high rate to very low hash rate.
2. It consumes a lot of power, much more than an Antminer of the same capabilities.

For those 2 reasons I have decided not to buy those. I will keep using Bitmain.

One more thing. One of the official resellers of this Whatsminer brand is the people of Pangolinminer. Recently I tried to do business with them and my experiencia  it was very bad so I do not recommend them. Use another reseller or try to contact the manufacturer in CHINA.

PEACE out and BITCOIN ON.

You can contact our info line for options since this thread should be based on the M3 not reference other asics. Or simply start a thread in mining support for questions you have.

**Important UPDATE**

After some weeks of many phone calls, emails and discussions I have received my miner. So my finals conclusion about this Company are:

1. They have made a great effort to help me find solution to receive the miner in Venezuela.
2. DHL in Venezuela is working good also but I will contact them to get a straight answer to bring more miners In. As soon as I can get this written by them, I will share this so many other venezuelans can use the legit shipment service.
3. Today I will put to work the Miner into a new nice hash address. The purpose of this is to measure his Hashrate in a monthly basis from now. I want to review this equipment so I can warranty is working good and its Hashrate is as stable as the Bitmain.

So far so good. After receiving the miner I can say pangolinminer.com is a good place to buy miners.

Thanks for your attention.

As far as I know, it is unfortunately not possible to change the hash board settings.

The settings are done automatically during the miner startup process.

Hello
Is there a firmware that if the temperature rises, turn off the device and do not damage the hashboard?

@taktazsoft
There is a 'too hot' -feature in the firmware already.

When the device is very warm, it does not turn off automatically. Which version of the firmware should be used to automatically shut down?

Can you post a screenshot which shows your miner status page which shows the hash rate, temperatures, etc. ?

Can an alternative PSU be used for the M3?
I've read different posts about the mysterious 3-pin 'Power control cable'. Is this cable necessary for the miner to work properly?

Yes. Custom one of psu.

Soo you now have a dead unit.

This is true for.

All Whatsminer
All new bitmain s11 s15 s17 t15 t17

All innosilicon t2 24 t2 26 t2 30 t2 37 t2 50 t2 57

At least Pangolinminer was selling spare psu’s you could have purchased one ahead of time.

I have 2 spare psu’s for my m10’s and as soon as I see a psu listed for the m20s I will buy one.

Hi all,

Can someone tell what the 3-pin cable from the PSU to the miner actually does please?

If I don't plug in the 3-pin cable, my M3 miner stops, is there a way around this as my other PSU that doesn't have the
3-pin cable and is quieter so, I would like to swap over to this one PSU. Any ideas?

Whatsminer's do not have on-board Vcore regulators like the S9 and many other miners do. They use the PSU to directly control voltage fed to the chips. That 3-wire connection is the voltage sense and control wires so no, it will not work with a regular 12V PSU.

I have WhatsMiner M3X unit, and it is rebooting too often without any reason. I've updated firmware to latest (2019 18.1), but that didn't help.
I tried different pools but it is always the same behavior - device boots itself, works for some minutes (something between 2 and 40 minutes) then reboots, booting itself up and repeats and repeats.
I don't think it's a temperature issue because it shows 82 C degree as a max on SM0 device (77 and 78 on two other SMs).
Are there any means to stop it constantly rebooting?

hello gays
my whatsminer M3 wont start mining.
I have this message on my API LOG
 system error state: slot:0, cgminer:1, pool:1, fan:0, temp_sensor:0, temp_over_heat:0, power_supply:0, effective_chips_error:1
and it also says :
 Detect fan[0].speed:0
Detect fan[1].speed:5430
could it be the reason of the problem.

switch the fans and see if the 0 speed fan moves from fan zero to fan one.

this would mean the fan has an issue and you need to buy a fan.

So if the fan speed is not detected mining won't start, because they work fine.

Yeah, the tachometer in the fan may be faulty even though the fan is spinning

Hmmm any discussion about this ? seems little fishy, i know that my m3's sometimes are running 18thz stable .

If it is not an official firmware from MicroBT, I would not put it in to a M3.

I'm new to this space, so please forgive me if I'm late to this thread. I recently acquired the whatsminer M3. Does anyone know if this device will be viable if plugged in to a regular wall outlet (110v)?

Please read very carefully the WhatsPower P3 power supply tech specs sticker.
You can't use 110V.

You need to have an professional electrician build you a 220V circuit.

Please also notice that M3 is really old miner and your cost running it is significantly higher than the mining rewards.

More info on the m3

loud loud loud

not efficient

you will only make money if you have free power.

lastly do not try a 120 to 240 transformer you will melt your in the wall wires
