Title: Bitmessage for Mac!
Post by: Jaxkr on June 21, 2013, 08:21:23 PM
I have tried to build a proper .app for Bitmessage for a while, but I could never figure out how to properly bundle OpenSSL. So, I made this guide (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=229414.0). But now it's obsolete as a great OS X build script is now included in Bitmessage!
You can download the DMG here: MEGA (https://mega.co.nz/#!nJB1DRpB!bGJgzUR1zDj6BGseTLly2DSGRYtBOqra7BQ9j1penBU)

No. This version has all the requirements (correct Python, OpenSSL, PyQt) bundled in.

Why is tis only available on their site and not on github or sorceforge?

https://bitmessage.org/forum/index.php/topic,1690.0.html
http://sourceforge.net/projects/bitmessagemac/files/

Do you think one can use this new all-in-one solution without any concerns?

Thanks!

Because there is no special code going into it. I have simply run Py2App and bundled all everything needed into a single .app. Personally, I use the python source fresh from Github.
But this is easier to get started with as you don't have to install anything prior to using it.

Ok, I downloaded it. Opened the dmg (contains only the app, no installer or anything else) and draged it to the program folder.
When I tried starting it a mac popup asked to accept incoming connections => ok
Program never started but crashed before anything else happend. Tried it several times...always crashed.

(Using MPB Pro / Snowleopard / all current updates).

So I am pretty annoyed...not only doesn't it work but now I am worried that there is yet another shit on my mac possibly compromising security.

Oh. Sorry.
Here, try these instructions: https://bitmessage.org/wiki/Compiling_instructions#OS_X
They were written by me.

Thanks for your help. But I'm gonna wait until a stable app will be available.

Yeah. This one is no where near stable.

It's a new build script. So yes, it's updated.

Snow Leopard

wanted to upgrade lately but then I saw the keynote about Maverick and decided to wait a few more months ;)

That explains it. As far as I know, this only runs on Mac OS X Mountain Lion.

I'll wait til I can get it to compile myself... This doesn't seem like the kind of thing I'd want to use some untrusted - no offense - third party's binaries for.

It's written in Python, so it's interpreted, not compiled. All of the source code is inside the .app, completely without obfuscation.
I have also written instructions on the wiki in order to run it yourself. https://bitmessage.org/wiki/Compiling_instructions#OS_X
I have simply posted this .app bundle for convenience.
I recommend compiling your own .app once you get everything working. This can be done by running ./osx.sh in the PyBitmessage directory.

Looks like someone else has my problem.

Maybe when Maverick comes out someone could take the time to compile it (unfortunately I don't have any clue how to do this).
