TOKYO: A Japanese company will start paying part of its employees’ salaries in Bitcoin, as it aims to get better understanding of the virtual currency, a spokeswoman said on Friday.

GMO Internet, which operates a range of web-related businesses including finance, online advertising and internet infrastructure, will start paying up to 100,000 yen ($890) monthly by Bitcoin to its employees in Japan from February next year.

“Employees can receive salaries by Bitcoin if they want to,” company spokeswoman Harumi Ishii told a French wire service.

“We hope to improve our own literacy of virtual currency by actually using it,” she said.

The offer will be open to around 4,000 employees of the GMO group in Japan, she said.

The company started a Bitcoin trading and exchange business in May.

And next month, it will join the so-called “Bitcoin mining” business — gaining the right to receive new Bitcoins as a reward for helping keep the network secure by approving transactions.

World Bitcoin prices have surged globally this year, soaring from less than $1,000 in January to $17,000 this week.

well, Bitcoin in Japan is very advanced and many cryptocurrencies also experienced popularity as a result of Japan. this is one of the positive things for bitcoiner in the world, but there are still many countries that have not enforced it. whether Bitcoin in 2018 will be a historic day for bitcoin and change the Government in a world that denounces it?

Japan's use of Bitcoin and the blockchain seems to be much ahead of other countries.

Its good to hear that the Japanese company will start paying salaries in bitcoin, and if we true may and possible is another country will be think like this or think way to make lika Japanese.

I think it's fine to leave the source of the news here. Japan is the leading country in term of crypto adoption so it's not rare to see them become the first one to implement this kind of move. They have a lot of merchants who accept bitcoin so it's not a problem receiving the salaries in bitcoin. I think other companies will see the result first before deciding whether they want to follow this move or not.

Wow!  That would be great especially to Japanese who are already started earning and using it as one of their source of income. They will surely be happy with this good news. But to those Japanese who aren't familiar with it yet would have difficulty in adapting the new way of receiving their salary in cryptocurrency.

If they started it then eventually for other countries. Bitcoin is trending today and it will be more popular in the next years. Japanese company and so with other companies adopt and will adopt this digital currency as the world is going digital. The market is more like of online strategy. People are starting to get livelihood from bitcoin. In this way its not impossible to get salaries out of bitcoin.  And even these companies are trading and investing in bitcoin.

Serious approach to cryptocurrencies, that's what I see. Such a decision - a very good prospect for the company's employees. They have the opportunity to regularly invest in cryptocurrency without commissions and earn.

Doesn't this look like a decision which the company could regret not in the distant future? If the price continues to rise as it does right now, they will see that they have to constantly pay more in fiat to their employees. But in any case, this is good news and could perhaps even be used as PR material for the company as well.

I really admire the country Japan in their strategies and being very adaptive about these kind of technology. I see how much they are advance in technology and how they still develop themselves and how they keep in mind that there are more room for improvement.
I won't doubt a bit if Japan will replace the title or achievement of China being the most influential country involved in cryptocyrrencies.

Japan is at the forefront of bitcoin adoption so this doesn’t surprise me at all. More & more articles like this will begin to emerge as time goes on.

I think this is good news, but I'm wondering how many of the employees will actually choose to receive their salary in BTC.

If they are smart and their employer fair, they will be able to decide how much of their salary will be paid in Bitcoin.
If you're more conservative you for instance would choose to get 20% in BTC and the rest in fiat.
If you're convinced BTC will make to a global phenomenon, well choose to get 80% paid in BTC.

But how come ? bitcoin price right now is very dodge and unstable.They could pay them 890$ worth of bitcoin tomorrow it would be 700$ or less. I think it's a bad idea to adop bitcoin as payment method right now , better wait till lightning network is introduced.

The good part is they still have the choice to receive it thru bitcoin or not.
It is Japan and they are already using it. They are just spreading the news more by that means.
So I guess maybe half of their employees will be accepting bitcoin as payment instead of Yen.
I would really love to experience that if I am on their side.

I think this is going to be an experimental procedure how will they fully implement the use of bitcoin in their country.  And if it succeed, some companies will follow.

Wow .. although Japan has experienced some cases of fraud and failure of digital currency system. but it turns out japan remained confident of bitcoin, until finally the supervisor of financial institutions in Japan has now given the green light on some companies.

That is a big step. But are people gonna accept Bitcoin as payments, also what about taxes on those bitcoin?

This is good news that I personally quite curious what the world's response to this news. Whether other countries will follow this or will still prohibit the use of bitcoin as a transaction tool. If other countries and companies follow that, then be sure I'm pretty sure bitcoin prices can stay at such high value now and will probably be stable in the future.

That's good that they are offering Bitcoin as salary to their workers and said that they can receive Bitcoin if they want to. That's a big advancement for their salary system on how they pay their workers. But, I think that can be a good idea nor a bad idea putting their whole salary in Bitcoin maybe a little bit risky. remember it does have a +20%/-20% margin. I personally would not convert all of my salary into crypto.

That is why the salary payment in bitcoin is optional to employees. An employee asking to be paid in bitcoin should know the risks (or rewards) involved when accepting such payment method.

If I worked at a company like this (a tech related company) and I wanted to be paid in Bitcoin, I'd just ask them and see if they were willing to do it.  Announcing it doesn't seem necessary unless they just do it to their employees.

Still, I would probably be interested in being paid partially in Bitcoin - it shouldn't just be getting paid BTC or not getting paid BTC, it should be a mix that the person is comfortable with (if they're a BTC investor or user, it could be a segment of their disposable income).
Or maybe they have a decent assessment of risk instead.

The Japanese are very faithful, even at work they are very serious. So when the Japanese enter the market, I am completely assured. They are always up to date and ahead of time. So earning a bitcoin sooner or later will happen ;D

And on the other hand, they could pay them $890 then tomorrow it will $1,000. Make sense. That's why it's not mandatory and I think those employees only who are interested are bound for bitcoin payment.

Honestly I don't see any problem if employees there will accept bitcoin as salary as unlike in other country, they have lots of options to used their bitcoin as there are lots of physical shops that accepts bitcoin as payment just like the usage of their usual Yen currency. And no doubt , bitcoin usage there will be more present in the future.

Great news, one more step towards bitcoin as a world currency. Japan is already quite advanced with bitcoin as many goods can already be bought with. In Europe here, we are not so advanced. Hardly any product can be bought with bitcoin, so it's not soon we'll get our salary in Bitcoins.

Wow just what you expect for the country where it originally came from it's expected and massive for the japanese country because most of the firms or payment industry in there are accepting bitcoin as mode of payment and as other way of investing your money.

That's great and shouldn't be a surprise, because Japan has officially recognized bitcoin as a currency. Other nations should follow suit and legitimize bitcoin, which can potentially serve as a store of value and protect people from the ravages of hyperinflation or high inflation.

Since Japan as legalized the btc in their country it is easy for them to accept the bitcoin in everything. It is first time I am hearing that some organization will start paying the btc to their employees. I hope soon this can be replicate in other countries as well. On the other hand the employees can save some btc in their wallet rest they can exchange it for cash for their daily needs. So automatically they are saving the btc for future as well.

That's an interesting piece of news.. The fact that employees can chose if they want to receive bitcoins or not, is great.

However, for the few who will accept to get their wage in bitcoin... What's next? I mean, are there dedicated ATM machine delivering yens for bitcoins in Tokyo? Do bars, restaurants, and so on accept bitcoin?

I understand, someone must make the first move.. The problem is that, if infrastructure are not in line with the offer; then the employees of such company may soon think that bitcoin is a scam.

Wow this is so great. This is what i loved to japanese people and specially to their information center. They are updated to what is new and what is thrending! They are very aware on and off the net. The government did a really good vision about cryptocurrency and they what its people to be knowledgable about this. I believe that they didnt just do this because bitcoin has the highest market price but also a preparation to the future of altcoins and cryptocurrency for the economical growth of their country! Also they want the people to explore their money in cryptoworld. But i know the japanese government have more action plan than these, and through this news. I think other country will somehow do the same think like japan did

I don't think it is something that will encourage companies to do the same. The problem is that bitcoin is now considered as an investment more than a currency. It's like to compare with a company that decides to pay the workers with gold. I think this case with Japan will stay one of the few isolated case

this is certainly a great idea, but rather risky, until bitcoin has become stable...I think this should be an individual decision of each employee - is he willing to take such a risk

Do they held a consensus if 1005 of their employees will accept their salaries in Bitcoin we all know there's a huge fee involve when you tried to convert it to fiat if they ask me I will ask for 50-50 50% in bitcoin and 50% in yen it's more reasonable that way .

Besides the topic, Japan is the most advanced country in the world, they are looking at the future like no one else and this is the best way to show to the world how it should be.
On the other hand, as an employee i would rather ask for a 50/50 for many reasons, first because i can't pay everything with BTC, try to pay your electricity bill with BTC if is not accepted: you have to sell some to get fiat and then pay the bill (keep on the list transaction fees which as now, are quite high).
All in all, being paid with a part of my salary a BTC it's considered an investment for the future like most of the holders in the world but we still need cash in the real world, not even in Japan cash is replaced totally with BTC.
Another side of the coin (pun not intended) is about taxation, how they will taxes the salary if paid in full BTC?

This is actually profitable for the company and even to it's workers. As it's mentioned this new scheme will be started from feb the company could accumulate btc now and until feb there is a really high chance the price increases with this the company could save a lot.

For the employees as well there is a advantage if they get their btc and right next day it get's pumped it becomes even more profitable for them or they can simply use it for saving it.

Another great news from the Japan. This country is really taking everything seriously about the crypto world. I mean what are the chances of country getting the crypto currency registered as official currency of their country, then add up more mining rigs and exchangers and also moreover give away the OTC trading legally.

This all and now they are officially giving away the salaries for their employees which makes everything just prefect. :-) This is all due to proper planning and execution of the same. Without this nothing would have been possible. Other countries are not taking things seriously. They think bitcoin as the first enemy of their national economy and that why they fear of having it. GMO being a giant internet company has paved the way for other companies to implement it.Since its going to start bitcoin mining,it would get bitcoins as block reward and so,it has no need to buy costlier bitcoins in the market to pay its employees which would not be practical and profitable.

This is really amazing while many countries are in doubt of having bitcoin as a currency Japan give their full support to bitcoin and virtual currencies. By giving bitcoin as a salary they also give investment opportunities for their people especially that bitcoin value keeps appreciating from time to time. I hope this will bring success to digital currencies that other countries will also decide to adopt it.

I really appreciate this move by the company because it will not only help the company to save the transaction costs but also it will be helpful for the employees too in order to manage their investment. In my country, you are taxed only when you are cashing out your funds so I can hold my earnings in BTC without converting into the fiat currency for the purpose of the tax planning that too in a legal way. This decision would also help the employees from other countries if they are willing to send some funds to their families.

If a company here would try to pay their employees with BTCs I doubt they could do this without creating issues with the government and labor rights, even if the employees agreed. It's a great idea to pay the salary of the employees in bitcoin as it would a great positive sign for both the company and employees. Japan is really taking bitcoin in a serious manner and they are taking every necessary step for making bitcoin as their national currency as they are loving it. I hope it will also boost their economy to some extent and slowly bitcoin will be using by each and every single citizen of japan for their day today expenditures.

I really don't see how it will be profitable for the company who is paying its employees in bitcoin, because as time will go by, the value of bitcoin would definitely rise and they would realise that they have paid a whole.

First of all please try to quote the source from where you have picked such news. Then yes Japan is really making a leap forward for widespread use of bitcoin considering that japan is the birthplace of bitcoin itself. But still this thought makes me quite confused as this salary payment would cost company a hell lot of fees and same would be the case with the people too. I don't think currently bitcoin is efficient enough for a widespread use.

I really admire Japanese government because of their support to bitcoin. This is great enough to congrats them. This will make bitcoin more reputated.

For Japan that doesn't surprise me, actualy I was expected that to happen even sooner. This is great news for Bitcoin adoption but when I think if I would like to get my paycheck in Bitcoin, I'm not so sure. Bitcoin is very volatile and this could be very tricky. Maybe just some smaller part and the larger one in fiat money. Still I beleive that many companies will follow that example in the future.

If this is implemented, it will make it easier for the owners of the company to be imitated by the owners of other companies in any country, I think this is a good example where all business owners can also monitor their employee transactions especially if it is also applied to employees who work in government

Japanese government are truly amazing persons, unlike here in our country, don't know what to with the crypto. There is already an opportunity in front of us but they kept refusing it and kept warning people about it withoug analyzing things first and a thorough study. I think this is a more widespread way of using bitcoin in the community. If all companies pay a bitcoin, it is likely that bitcoin will be used more commonly. This is a way for Japanese people to have a better view of the true benefits of bitcoin. I am looking forward to one day receiving a bitcoin instead of the normal salary.

Wondering how they will be calculating it? Since price is too volatile. Won't workers be worried since they will be subjected to the rollercoaster price of BTC?

i guess they are calculating it in dollars so that they wont be loose if ever the bitcoins value would decrease. workers shoudnt be worry at all despite of volatility of bitcoin rather they should be happy on it because theres a posibility that their salary will increase in the help of volatility , thats why most employees will still prefer bitcoin as their salary when compared to fiats or money. i hope these idea will spread all over the world and not just japan because this can give bitcoin a big break in terms of popularity and adoption.

The future of bitcoin deserves our approval, but the process can be full of twists and turns.

Its is nice to know that  one of the Japanese companies GMO internet will be paying part of salary to it's employees in bitcoin from the month of February this year.  It will prove to be a start of new revolution.  It the experiment succeeds (I think it will definitely succeed )  it will give a boost to crypto market.  Then more and  more companies will adopt the payment system by bitcoin or  other good crypto currencies.  
But on the other hand there is fear too in my mind.  Volatility in the rate may affect it otherwise too.  Suppose today I am being paid salary when the price of one bitcoin is suppose $11000 and  after the distribution of the salary the rate goes down to say $10500 then I will loss my 500 dollars which may spread dis satisfaction in the minds of employees like me.  But on the other hand if the price rises I will be gaining.  
So how to deal with this up and down trend; it will be the major issue which should be kept on top priority and  serious discussion over the issue is required before implementation.

Japan is a country that is very tolerant of bitcoin.
When I was in a trip to Japan last month and found a lot of businesses are hanging a support the bitcoin payment, while support for the bitcoin to pay, but I will not use, now the transfer fee is too high.

I think this news is very interesting for bitcoin investors, after all, this can increase bitcoin usage and increase its market value.

This may be good news because bitcoin will advance and become better known by everyone in the world, Japan introduced the first country to pay salaries using bitcoin, then other developed countries will follow the example of japan using bitcoin.

I like how Japan, Korea and these Asian nations are going bolder and bolder into cryptocurrency adoption, they've trailblazing many aspects of it by applying practical use of the blockchain. We need to observe and perhaps learn from their trends.

I believe company's like this are really leading the way for the western world. For a global organisation paying salaries in crypto in a lot of instances makes a lot of sense and reduces fees rather than managing multiple fiat currencies.

Ladies and gents, Konnichiwa.  I live in Japan.  I thought you'd all love to know some stuff about the country and their love of crypto.  At this point in time, VERY few Japanese own BTC.   Most of those retailers that accept BTC don't even know that they accept BTC (because they accept it through a popular payment processor).   Things are changing with more and more people talking about it, but rarely do I meet someone that knows about it deeply.   Next to no one knows there are other crypto projects besides BTC.   AND yet Japan is still considered an innovator in the space.   This should tell us all something.   That once the majority of Japanese (and Korean / Chinese) know about this stuff deeply, that it will be integrated into daily life quite quickly.   Adoption of new things does certainly happen fast here.   I'll keep you all in tune with when I hear all the ol ladies on the train talkin bout it.   That'll be when cryptos truly go to zee moon.   That is all. 

Its an excellent proposal, especially because it gives employees the option of charging in bitcoin or doing it in their local currency, within the companies this could be a way to increase the worker's momentum, to benefit them and at the same time make the movement economic for themselves be prosperous. At least one of the companies in an Asian country adds to this good idea that promotes knowledge of the economy. Will they also take the initiative to offer a course on btc to their employees, for those who do not know the new technology at all?

It is because Japan's view on cryptocurrencies is different from most of the countries. Well, to be precise, each country has a different viewpoint in cryptocurrencies that is why some don't accept the use of it or ban it in their country and some accept it as a great opportunity to further improve their economic status. Let's just see how paying salary in bitcoin would turn out for the employees.

If in Japan there are companies that pay their employees salaries through bitcoin which I think in other countries may start looking at companies in Japan who pay salaries through bitcoin. If the salaries of employees through bitcoin work well most likely in other countries start applying payroll companies in Japan that pay their salaries through bitcoin. ;)

It sounds great that Japanese company will start paying salaries in bitcoin. Its a good news for bitcoiners like us. Japan initiating this activity and if this activity will success I'm sure many country will follow just like what Japan did.

I think if there is one company in Japan that implements paying their salaries through bitcoin most likely in other countries will also start implementing their employees salary system through bitcoin. ;)

I really like Japan when it comes to discipline and implementations. It says there that it is to prepare the country better for cryptocurrency which really i agree. Atleast their government is supporting/helping them to be better in this matter, and besides it says also there that only part of their salary will be in crypto and they still have a choice whether crypto or not to recieve.

It's amazing how easily and quickly the Japanese seem to embrace new technology and then fit it into their daily lives.  We seem to be years behind in the west and constantly paying catchup.

A risky thing. One month we can earn several hundred thousand. another few dollars only. The btc price is unstable. This is not a good solution. I would not agree to something like that.

We all know that Japan is advanced country,which is well-known for many different field ,and do the cryptocurrencies. If Japan’s companies  do proactively for paying salary, it may be a great news for crypto currencies. Well Japan is, certainly, improving a really intelligent system. I believe soon other companies will follow the idea, for BTC seems to be here to stay in the market as a really suitable item.

I wonder how they are going to set the salaries even when the price of BTC is always going up and down. Maybe would be better if they get X BTC amount/month, than X USD Amount/month. But tricky risk.

I hope in a few years Bitcoin will be pay as salaries in more and more places, and I believe in a few years in will be part of the paying method in a lot of places in the world.

Actually, this will be interesting, The GMO Internet Company, which offers web-related service including bitcoin exchange, intend to pay salary by bitcoin up to 890$, starting in February, therefore,  employees will be able to  receive salary by bitcoin If they are interested in, not only that but also, the company is going to offer 10% bonus for employees who are interested in trying this opportunity.

That’s too funny. This week you’ll be making $900. Next week $200. The week after $1,100 then $300. If they are going to give people the equivalent of their salary in btc, those people may never know if they can pay their monthly bills by the time they cash out to pay them.

That is a logical answer. But may be they are calculating the salaries of their workers in bitcoin for every month and they pay them in bitcoin, just here in this form some signature campaigns are paying to their participant in Dollar, they calculate dollar for bitcoin and then transfer fund in bitcoin. I think that in future when bitcoin will become more stable then it will become more easy for them to pay them their salaries in bitcoin.

Wish I had been paid in BTC a few years ago.Eventually we'll all be paid in a crypto currency - its coming - its unstoppable now. However, the government ones will be inflationary and the decentralised ones will be deflationary.

In fact that's a cool thing japan is very advanced mostly in this kind of domain and cryptocurrencies are very advanced there. Plus the Japanese people believe in bitcoin so no wonder that a Japanese company would pay  the employees in BTC

well, this is a good news and i believe the country will implement it as soon as possible. japan economy is one of the leading economy in the world. this will even send a positive signal to other developed countries about virtual currencies.

Woudn't want to be the guy who negotiated his salary end of last year at this company. Don't deny the upside, but the significant downside caused by the volatility of BTC would be too risky for me to rely on to feed my family off.

It is February 2018 now so does it mean that this company will implement paying Bitcoin as salary to their employees? any updates from this news? I like the idea of this company even though they know the volatility of Bitcoin, employees should now learn how to HODL their salaries so they can gain a double pay ;D

I am incline to agree with you. Bitter truth it is. Bitcoin fluctuating nature is a little problem but only in this case. People can suffer loss anytime and that is not what employees would accept about their salaries. It is a way too early to do such things.

The best is to treat bitcoin as an investment tool for now. But I still appreciate what Japan did because it shows its understanding of bitcoin.

I have no sure knowledge about that Japanese company have started paying salaries in bitcoin but yes the news about bitcoin in japan is strongly supporting bitcoin  and if such news that bitcoin is starting accepting bitcoin as a salaries then i think that is the best step for bitcoin. I think that this is not permanent and this is just sort of experimentation for their company if what will be the come up in the future if they will just pay salaries using bitcoin and i think that it is risky to pay salaries in bitcoin because the employees might complain because of the volatility of bitcoin might decrease or lessen their salary in terms of valuing in fiat.
