Ok some background there is a well known member of the crypto community who calls himself the cryptohobo.   http://hobo.majesti.co/hobodamus.html  crypsty chat got together started throwing ideas around decided to pay tribute to the hobo.. hes is not online yet and doesn't know this coin is out.. i wanted to have this coin done and give it over to CryptoHobo to run with. Big thanks out to shakezula for running with this.

Ill report back in after hobo learns hes got his own coin.

There is more too releasing sources than just Linux/Mac, How do you know there isn't code in there to steal your wallets, a massive premine or turn your clients into a botnet?

Because I know the devs of this particular coin, I'm not worried about that. And, fyi, just because the sourcecode is clean, that doesn't mean the released QT wallet is clean, it could have easily been compiled from different source code.

The source is here:

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B49exKIsGBn5aGVrSVlNZnA1ME0/edit?usp=sharing

and it was posted in Cryptsy chat before the Windows-Qt too. Thundertoe just chose not to link it. Big deal. This wasn't a "REAL" announcment, it was a coin for fun for the Hobo. Don't like it, don't mine it--no one's making you ALL HAVE to download/install/mine    ;D

Whats the current LTC rate?

Make sure scantime and expiry with cgminer (or whatever client you are mining with) are set lower than default. I use scantime 1 and expiry 30 to 40 (For some reason I feel lowering this as difficulty goes up helps) Im getting roughly a block every 30~40 minutes with 730kh/s at current difficulty. Luck changes all the time tho. Sometimes I get 3 blocks in a row, other times I wait for a couple of hours to get the next block.

my scan time is 1 and expiry is 20, i solo mine a lot so i don't think it's my settings, i finally got a block but it seems people with lower hash rates are getting ore. i'll keep trying a few more hours, if nothing works out, i'll consider just buying.

Try with a higher expiry, the blocks have an average of 30 seconds and you have more than enough h/s to set it more than 30 seconds.

Lower than 30 expiry = easier to catch quick blocks (those that take less than 30s to find)
Higher than 30 expiry = easier to catch slower blocks (those that take less than 30s to find)

Quick blocks = blocks with less than network difficulty.
Slow blocks = blocks with more than network difficulty.

What's the current exchange rate or what are these selling for? o.O

So far I've seen them in the 0.00035 to 0.0004 range. They should be worth a lot more though, if they ever do get a good launch.

Some meaningless estimations versus other coins:

OOPS! Give or take 2% decrease in value every 10 days, this is just theoretical launch prices though, so I didn't bother with it.

Compared to for example Fastcoin it should be worth:
FST: 0.00008 BTC worth, 12sec blocks, 32fst per block
HBN: unknown BTC worth, 30sec blocks, 5hbn per block

12sec block / 30sec block = 0.4 speed of fst vs hbn block
32fst / 5hbn = 6.4 FST/HBN coin ratio per block

0.00008 BTC * 6.4 (FST/HBN coin ratio per block) / 0.4 (FST vs HBN block speed = 0.00128 BTC

So if it has as good a launch as FST, that's quite possibly the value it'll have when it's as old as FST is now.

Example with DGC:
DGC: 0.000325 BTC worth, 20sec blocks, 20dgc per block

20sec block / 30sec block = 0.667
20dgc / 5hbn = 4 ratio

0.000325 * 4 / 0.667 = 0.00195 BTC

I don't think it'll get the same value as DGC, but as you can see, 0.00128 BTC is NOT a bad lowest estimate.

Example with BTG, never saw this "go off" like many other coins:
BTG: 0.009 BTC worth, 600sec blocks, 3btg per block

600sec block / 30sec block = 20
3btg / 5hbn = 0.6

0.009 * 0.6 / 20 = 0.00027 BTC

Let's hope it doesn't come to this D:

Example with LTC:
LTC: 0.03 BTC worth, 150sec blocks (2.5min), 50ltc per block

150sec block / 30sec block = 5
50ltc / 5hbn = 10

0.03 * 10 / 5 = 0.06 BTC

Now this is a value it'll never get to, but this shows the unrealistic potential of growth!

Average value of DGC/BTG/FST = 0.001167 BTC per HBN (Basically price if launched on Cryptsy and smaller exchanges)

Include LTC and the average becomes : 0.015875 BTC per HBN (If for some awesome, strange reason it gets on BTC-e)

1HBN= 0.015875 BTC??

It's worth about 0.0004 atm, it'll probably be worth 3-5 times asmuch as that when launched. If it became half as popular as LTC, it'd be worth ~0.016. It'll never get that popular though.

Well... I never really said that... I'm horrible at speculating prices :D

So how's everyone feeling with their newly filled wallets of HBN? And could someone explain for a dummy how the stakes work?

Saw a sale on the Cryptsy chat where the oh-great cryptohobo sold 250 HBN for 0.25 BTC (0.001 BTC per HBN).

And as well-mannered as he is, the hobo sent him an extra 10HBN for a nice trade.

SUPER STAKE!!

2% stake every 10 days! earn some interest quickly for holding your Nickels in your wallet.

for mining .. 30 sec block are pushing the network.. you may want to adjust the defaults on cgminer try lowering the scantime and expiry to 50% of default or less que 1 scantime 10 expiry 20  this is just ballpark to start from defaults. anyone has a better setting please feel free to share

cgminer --scrypt --worksize 256 --thread-concurrency 8192 --lookup-gap 2 --gpu-threads 2 --intensity 13 --gpu-fan 90 --gpu-engine 1075 --gpu-memclock 1250 --shaders 1024 -o http://75.156.208.65:8340 -u **** -p ****
 pause
Work with this: stratum+tcp://75.156.208.65:3333

you're connecting to the wrong port.  Replace "-o http://75.156.208.65:8340" with "-o http://75.156.208.65:8337"
Work with this: stratum+tcp://75.156.208.65:3333

you're right, it is 3333 for the port now.  But your cgminer .bat file has the 8340 port not the 3333.  You will need to change that for it to connect when starting the miner.

My debug file says something about CPU miner started for PoS and soon afterwards another block is found and then the error begins. Do I really need to re-download the blockchain? What's the thing about PoS starting?

I'm at a loss here....

EDIT:

OK...re-downloaded blockchain and still getting the error. Anyone know what's the deal with this?

Basically you get interest for staking your coins up to mine a block.  2% every 10 days.  Since this is the 10th day from the coins launch this is likely why you are seeing the POS and checkpoint notification.  We will probably get a client update soon enough which will fix the checkpoint error.

So then...should I just ignore the error and continue mining? Apologies for my ignorance here, but I've never experienced this issue before with any coin client.

Any guide on how to generate stake coins?

Anyone?

Oh go on then...

If your HoboNickel wallet in not encrypted with a pass phrase then any balance older than 10 days can mint PoS blocks.

If your HoboNickel wallet is encrypted the padlock text will show 'wallet is encrypted and currently locked'. You can unlock your wallet for PoS minting in the qt client by going to Help > Debug Window > Console and typing the following:

> walletpassphrase yourpasspharse 99999999 true

'yourpassphrase' is your pass phrase and the 99999999 number is just a long time to leave the wallet unlocked.

If you did this correctly the padlock text hover over will show 'wallet is encrypted and currently unlocked', if you have an eligible PoS balance you should see some of you balance move to stake (probably within a few hours, if not its worth restarting the client every 4 hours or so, if your really keen to get your first PoS block). When the PoS block is fully confirmed your balance will be re-credited with the stake and the PoS.

Your eligible PoS balance (coin age) resets when it has been staked i.e. it will take another 10 days to generate more stake from the same balance.

If you don't want to stake all or any of your coins then you can add reservebalance=100 (example) to your hobonickels.conf i.e. if you have a 1000 balance eligible for PoS minting (more than 10 days coin age) if you set reservebalance=100 then only a maximum of 900 of your balance will be staked.

Some PoS coins require a .bat to unlock an encrypted wallet when using 'bitcoind'. Hope that helps.

P.S. If only I could of told my future self in 2009 that in 2013 I'd be mining BottleCaps and HoboNickles... lol  ;)

See: http://www.hobonickels.org/modern_carvers.html (some amazing artwork and carvings)

and the checkpoint message is ok nothing is broke, its a dev reminder to add some new checkpoints soon, and they will be.

Nothing is broken in regards to checkpoints.

HBN is a open group project.

There is a very strong HoboNickels group of devs and supporters behind it.

Anyone is welcome to help or contribute.

The spirit of this whole project was everyone pitching in to help others.

you may want to keep wallets off when not using them for transfers to stop using up an coinage until after update rolls out.

A block explorer would be awesome, we can try to raise a bounty .. everything is donated.

Sorry to say that after putting my head into the code today, and having Mullick(awesome caps dev) look at the changes and add a few more.
The update is going to have too much rolled into it for a quick release. Everyone will need time for a mandatory update.

We have made the most of coding changes and its ready to go on the git. We will post the link for the update soon. All clients will need to be updated for it to take effect.

The updated code will go live 8-20-13.
This will give everyone enough time to update clients.

The updated links will be posted when ready. I will also make a ann thread for the mandatory update.

please do not redownload blockchain it wont fix the warning. If you are worried you will not get the stake you are due you can keep wallet shut or set reservebalance=100000 in your .conf

Kinda working, you need more then 1 block to get staked to get a reward. Rounding error problem. You can send a batch of mined hbn to another wallet and it will stake.

Fix for singe mined blocks coming soon.

Coolio. Its worth considering that PoS will be generated from the first eligible block that you mined. Therefore you might want to wait until a good number of mined blocks are eligible for PoS minting.

I had mined 4 blocks on 7/28 and more on subsequent dates. I am still not seeing any balance moving to stake.

EDIT: could you guys give me an idea as to where youre from? im setting up a few stratum servers worldwide to reduce stales and currently have one in america, canada and hopefully UK

EDIT: could you guys give me an idea as to where youre from? im setting up a few stratum servers worldwide to reduce stales and currently have one in america, canada and hopefully UK

This hobo resides in Austin, TX. Gotta love a town where you can spange on almost any corner, and buy tacos on the corners where you can't. The problem is that people tell you that it isn't the heat that's bad here, but the humidity. Those people are liars.

This thing is broke. I would have atleast 15 blocks which should have been staked by now. Instead I just got 2 mined messages with 0 coins and nothing in stake  ???

The fix is being set in motion 20th August. Those are stake blocks. Once confirmed, the stake blocks goes into your wallet (At a value of 5 HBN). The stake does not work at the moment, that is why the fix is being released.

hey guys, working on setting up my first pool, so super green, but on the hobonickel compile make -f makefile.unix USE_PNP=- like the instructions say I get to a spot in the compile and it errors out with

g++ -c -O2 -msse2 -pthread -Wall -Wextra -Wformat -Wformat-security -Wno-unused-parameter -g -DBOOST_SPIRIT_THREADSAFE -I/home/ubuntu/HoboNickels/src -I/home/ubuntu/HoboNickels/src/obj -DUSE_UPNP=0 -DUSE_IPV6=1 -DHAVE_BUILD_INFO -fno-stack-protector -fstack-protector-all -Wstack-protector -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2  -MMD -MF obj/net.d -o obj/net.o net.cpp

net.cpp:19:32: fatal error: miniupnpc/miniwget.h: No such file or directory
compilation terminated.
make: *** [obj/net.o] Error 1

"-" is supposed to work without needing the miniupnpc loaded...anyone know a workaround other than installing the UPNP libraries?

Above in the make, i see DUSE_PNP=0 but I have verified numerous times it's -, not sure here...

Any help appreciated.

Pool is working perfectly. Autopayments are enabled and working aswell now. Not alot of stales and, personally, I have NEVER had trouble with russian pools. They are perfect for me considering I live in Norway.

+1 For Tranz's tip tho, that just goes for everything ever on the interwebz.

Autopay were disabled for inital testing. Right now all should work fine.

PS: You right about passwords, never use same on more  then one pool.
I thought all knows that without you kiddy prompting.....

This is normal with POS coins. This will be addressed by the dev team at some point. All is working fine, just a warning message, not and error.

Strange...never saw this/such messages with NVC wallet, may be this is because they all are just an unprofessionally modified copypastes of NVC?)

Btw, when the hell hobostakes will even work, 20 aug?

The answers to your questions have already been posted.

Found the original Hobo code of conduct:  enjoy

An ethical code was created by Tourist Union #63 during its 1889 National Hobo Convention in St. Louis Missouri. This code was voted upon as a concrete set of laws to govern the Nation-wide Hobo Body; it reads this way:

1 Decide your own life, don't let another person run or rule you.
2 When in town, always respect the local law and officials, and try to be a gentleman at all times.
3 Don't take advantage of someone who is in a vulnerable situation, locals or other hobos.
4 Always try to find work, even if temporary, and always seek out jobs nobody wants. By doing so you not only help a business along, but ensure employment should you return to that town again.
5 When no employment is available, make your own work by using your added talents at crafts.
6 Do not allow yourself to become a stupid drunk and set a bad example for locals' treatment of other hobos.
7 When jungling in town, respect handouts, do not wear them out, another hobo will be coming along who will need them as bad, if not worse than you.
8 Always respect nature, do not leave garbage where you are jungling.
9 If in a community jungle, always pitch in and help.
10 Try to stay clean, and boil up wherever possible.
11 When traveling, ride your train respectfully, take no personal chances, cause no problems with the operating crew or host railroad, act like an extra crew member.
12 Do not cause problems in a train yard, another hobo will be coming along who will need passage through that yard.
13 Do not allow other hobos to molest children, expose all molesters to authorities, they are the worst garbage to infest any society.
14 Help all runaway children, and try to induce them to return home.
15 Help your fellow hobos whenever and wherever needed, you may need their help someday.
16 If present at a hobo court and you have testimony, give it. Whether for or against the accused, your voice counts!

please do not redownload blockchain it wont fix the warning. If you are worried you will not get the stake you are due you can keep wallet shut or set reservebalance=100000 in your .conf

Look like on the 20th it is due to arrive.

One question to devs.
Where are transaction fees come for now.
As i see on my pool wallet and blockchain explorer, every "generate" block are extactly 5.00 HBN, even if block not empty and included some transations with fees.
These fees simply disappears somewhere. On other coins transaction fees is included into generate transaction.
Its by design or there are some bug in the code?

This is a legitimate question... blundertoe, shakezula and maybe mullick... this deserves an answer.

transaction fees are destroyed

" The proof-of-stake minting introduces at most 1% annual inflation. Meanwhile, PPCoin's transaction fees are destroyed to counterbalance these inflationary forces."

Yep will all PoS implementations currently fees are destroyed to slightly counteract inflation. Since fees are not required as a incentive when the PoW reward diminishes their only purpose is to prevent transaction spam. Hence the small fees compared to litecoin ect.

Pos will still generate more coins then transaction fees so it will not cause the total supply to diminish

OK time for a update:

The HBN patch has been getting pushed back as we waited to see how the CAP situation played out. Many of the same fixes getting applied to CAP will also be used on HBN, so it made no sense to rush out he HBN changes before CAP had stabilized its issues.

CAP now seems to be secure at this point, Mullick would like a chance to double check everything one final time tonight on CAPS side before finalizing the HBN fixes.

So.. hopefully new client rolls out on time. It will include checkpoints and stake fixes.

However when the stake code change takes place it will be on a set block in the future not changed right when the new client is used, yes the code is in there but wont activate for a set number of blocks (stake changes have to be pushed back enough to make sure everyone is on new client.)

Will update with any new info as soon as i can.

Thanks for the update. I agree wholeheartedly that the release should make sure that CAP is running ok before putting it in the wild. I have had enough fun with CAP, prefer not to have any of that type of fun with my HBN.

Yes agree wholeheartedly, better to take time with the fixes. Would rather a later release that works with no forks, then a quick one that has issues.

So far the only thing that HBN is not doing 100% correct is stake. But simply waiting for 10 blocks to be solved and moving 50 coins to another wallet works great!  I have been getting a few very nice stakes lately.

You just need a block of 50 coins or more to gen stake. If you are mining, simply wait for 50 coins and move them to another wallet, that is up all the time. It will get staked. Been working great for me.

I figured I would just wait for the new client. In hindsight I should have been transferring them all as I went.

This is going to fork in two days.

All CAP-clones are doomed unless the developers are actively changing the code.

If you are smart you will sell for any amount you can get.  De-listing will follow and then death.

Bottlecaps didnt fork per-se, it was going from the old to new version that screwed up the stakes. Getting stakes from the non-updated chain with the updated client.

I don't really know anything about what caused the fork... just taking a guess seeing as how LBW has never had an update and it forked after exactly a month.

It was also a CAP-clone.

I don't know what happened with Lebowskies, but it seems like the devs made their own errors as it does not seem like the same issue cap is having. HBN is atm fork-free and the devs know exactly what they have to do to prevent forks as best as possible. Meaning we will have to suffer with a broken original wallet staking until the CAP issue is fixed. I would be rather surprised to see HBN forked by any conventional means, as I know people who hold the coin, holds lots of it and are trustworthy hobos.

As a sidenote, Bitcoin forked three years ago due to faults in the protocol. Forks doesn't mean a coin is doomed :)

Plus stakes have been running for sometime here, and seem to be working well. So the 30 day mark will not be due to stakes, most likely, but rather something else in the code. We shall see.

hello,

thank you for the info.

Sadly this isnt profitable for me, i make minus. I get approx 200 HBN per day with my  overclocked 7970 at 710Khash.
It takes 0,365kw per hour (8,76 kwh per day @ 0,249€). for the HBN i get approx 0.02293100 BTC 0 2,06€ but my Powercosts are 2,18€.
So i will search for something else.

Does anyone make Profit here? i mean the 7970 is the newest card atm (exept 7990 which is hard to get)

Not to mention the 7970 is nowhere near as power efficient as the 7950. On the other hand, I usually only mine coins that I believe will be more profitable by holding them long term. I think the POS interest on this coin makes it a possible long term winner. Those who only mine to sell and buy Bitcoin are not helping the altcoin scene.

I had calculated the efficency from the official TDP Value on wikipedia and the max. Hashing  values of the Litecoin wiki.
The 7970 and the 7950 are identical efficent in theory. Why do you rate the difference as "nowhere near"?
Any examples or experiences? (So far i tested 7970, 5970 and 6870)

I recognised that some manufatures are better than others.
so i gett only 710khash out of the possible 800khash.

With your power costs, you need to get a cheap asci, like the AM BE. Then mine and dump a SHA256 coin. ZET is hot right now. But I would dump it and buy and hold HBN for the SUPER efficient stake.

If you would like to take a gamble on an ASCI miner and help your fellow man out, see my sign.

Ok i stoped today. It makes no sense in my case.
I tried everything. The card has good Asic Quality (87%) but i cant go under 1.000V.
I cant get better than 1,95 Mhash per Watt with my 7970 from Powercolor,
which is not enough.

I will sell the 2 cards on ebay, and buy the coins directly.
I already daytraded (or weekly) some coins in the past (1-2 BTC per coin,  2k€ atm). That works for me.

Unless i get free solar power i will not mine again.
(Solar investment ROI from mining, maybe i will test it :-)

thanks for the Help.

Guys I know the staking is not perfect right now.   But it does work.

You can solve it easy in 1 of 2 ways. I think method 1 is the best.

1) On one computer you solo mine, then when you get 50 coins ship them to another HBN wallet on another computer. It will stake.  Or if you are using a pool just set the min payout to 50.

2) You can do it with 1 wallet. Just again wait till you have 50 coins then ship them to a new address from the same wallet. After 10 days it will stake.  Problem is you will have to do this many times as the new minted coins will get in the way of the 50 block.

Its not perfect, but it works for now. Remember it is ONLY 10 days! You get 2% in 10 days for a super small amount of work.

I can tell you this will get fixed, but it needs to be fully tested before being rolled out.

The 7950 costs about $210, draws 200w, and mines at about 660 Kh/s.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125414R

The 7970 costs about $280, draws 250w, and mines at maybe 700 kh/s if you are lucky.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131468

I've built a few dozen mining systems, and have never liked the 7970 for mining. It creates a lot more heat, and in my experience isn't any faster than a 7950 for mining. Most of my friends that have 7970's paid around $400, and don't use them for mining anymore.

160w for 7950 and 220w 7970 are more accurate. and they both can go down to 160w~ with the correct clocks and mine @ +/- 650kh/s. 7970 @ 220w are able to do 730-750++

Not sure if this is necessary. But I was told to delete everything but wallet.dat and re-download the block chain. I am just getting to it myself this morning so I have nothing to say for sure yet.

stake fix is in the code it activates after the block count hits a certain number. I think it will be about 9 days have to check the code.

Thundertoe. I have packaged up the 1.1 version and put it here. If you want to update the thread.

http://www.megafileupload.com/en/file/446338/HoboNickels-1-1-0-rar.html

Lucazane. The source should be available soon. mullick will post as soon as the git pull and merge is complete.

I have 1.1 running on test computer. So far no checkpoint warning after removing and redownloading the block chain.

I am having issues getting synced. I have tried redownloading the entire chain multiple times but it always stops around block 110,400 to 110,600, different each time. Tried using connect only and still the same issue. Left it for a few hours thinking it would mayeb work itself out, no luck. If I stop the client and restart I gain 1-10 blocks each time.

It comes up and says it is Minting suspended due to locked wallet. When I enter the the password using walletpassphrase *passhere* 86400 it kills the program with an exception.

Any ideas?

Just a guess. Try backing up your wallet.dat then deleting everything. See if it sycns up to current, then copy your original wallet.dat back.

When a coin constantly gets "checkpoint too old" it means to ME that the "developers" (term used loosely nowadays) are not doing their job or keeping up on their coin(s).  If you want people to have faith in your coin.. then this should never happen.  Just an opinion.  I also got the "checkpoint too old" when I "updated" this coin.

I think you have to delete all but your wallet.dat from user >appdata >  roaming >  hobo and re-download the block chain.
I updated few days ago and the message has gone.

I was thinking that, maybe it kept the old blockchain some how from the previous version. I'll try it out later today.

Yep you need to redownload the chain as it has to catch the checkpoint when downloading to recognize it. To clear up the issues Ill try to help blunder setup broadcast checkpoints

I brought up an old 1.0 wallet and indeed it is at the wrong diff.

If you are mining with the old wallet you are on the WRONG chain. Turn it off, remove everything but wallet.dat out of app/roaming and get the correct one.

If you don't do this you could lose your HBN if you transfer them, and your mined HBN will NOT be useable.

Could someone please explain when I run the Wallet Client for this coin this address:

Take all my Upload bandwidth?
Untill I kill their connection or quit the client?
Even if I kill their connection they reconnect in a matter of minutes and it starts again.

Is the stake working?

I redownloaded the block and it gave me a Mined income of .44 HBN.
I've got about 200-300 HBN that is at least 10-20 days old.

Nothing is in the staked balance, just the normal balance.

The wallet doesn't have to be open/running for the whole 10 day period does it?

.44 on 200 for 10 days is correct.

It will come in and out of stake balance fairly quickly.

First time looking at HBNs(or any crypto currency for that matter) cpp code, but this seems odd.

in main.ccp and .h

...

    static const int64 MAX_MINT_PROOF_OF_STAKE = 10 * CENT;
...

...
CBigNum bnRewardCoinYearLimit = MAX_MINT_PROOF_OF_STAKE; // Base stake mint rate, 100% year interest
...
CBigNum bnLowerBound = 10 * CENT; // Lower interest bound is 1% per year
       CBigNum bnUpperBound = bnRewardCoinYearLimit;

I think MAX_MINT_PROOF_OF_STAKE should be 100 * CENT

or not like I said first time looking..

So, it is an error in the OP (2% stake every 10 days!(100%) in a year holding your Nickels in your wallet.), or an error in the code?
Sad.

So hold tight for now. If you want out, feel free to dump at cryptys, or PM me. I'll give you bits on the dollar, but at least you will have something.. :)
