Title: [XPM] The Unofficial Primecoin Overview Thread (all information in one place!)
Post by: mechs on July 29, 2013, 03:47:36 AM
Hello fellow Primecoin miners.  If you are like me, you are confused by all the different miners, threads, clients and optimizations for Primecoin (XPM) now.  I figured we needed a post with all the aggregate information in one place.

Just as a very brief overview, Primecoin has a bunch of features (which admittedly, other alt-coins have) that are improvements over bitcoin.  The biggest one from a practical standpoint is much faster confirmation times due to 60 second block times (versus 10 minutes for Bitcoin).  This makes it functionally much faster for the  transmission of the primecoins.  However, what makes Primecoin unique from all the other coins (and there are a lot!) is its Proof of Work system actually does something useful (as opposed to a hashing algorithm such as SHA, scrypt, etc), it finds chains of prime numbers.

Specifically it finds the following types of prime chains:
1CC -> Cunningham chain of 1st kind
2CC -> Cunningham chain of 2nd kind
TWN -> bi-twin chain

What I really like about it, is these chains are useful not just for prime number theory but have uses for cryptography.  As we are all part of the crypto-currency revolution, anything that moves forward the science of cryptography enhances the entire eco-system.

For more information on what these chains are useful for:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cunningham_chain
http://mathworld.wolfram.com/BitwinChain.html

To Summarize, the Upsides of Primecoin:
1. # of coins only limited by Moore's law and efficiency of algorithms to find prime number chains.
2. Fast transaction time
3. Proof of Work scientifically relevant
4. No pre-mine, fairly launched on July 7, 2013 at 18:00 UTC

Primecoin Downsides:
1. Since only limit is Moore's law (no set max coin limit), if Moore's law is broken (ie quantum computers), the difficulty may drop in the future.
2. If another more useful PoW is found which meets the criteria of being both
   a. Hard to compute
   b. Easy to verify
   Then interest in the coin will collapse along with it's value
3. If the coin is successful and prime number theorists can use the results to find an equation to predict prime #s, it would essentially break the coin's PoW.  Though, not everyone would view this as a downside due to the enormous scientific value that may provide.

You can find an excellent, much more detailed article explaining primecoin here: http://letstalkbitcoin.com/primecoin-primer/#.UilbJJLbPng

         Useful commands:
             To have vanitygen create a Primecoin address:
Code:
vanitygen -F compressed -X 23 A
            For bulk-wallet usage, try this, which will generate 10 addresses:
Code:
./bulkwallet.sh 23 A 10 | ./paperwallet.sh >paperwallet.html

Thanks for the info.

Will mining with the HP8 (high performance) client work in pools? I just see the notation that it is preferred for solo mining.

If it will work for pools, is it better than jhprimeminer?

The issue is currently there is only 1 primecoin miner pool and that is ypool.net.  hp8 can be used to pool mine if you had a pool to point it at. However, that would require a pool with either getwork or Stratum support.  Currently, ypool.net supports only pushthrough and therefore you can only use the jhPrimeminer with it.  On the bright side, the latest version came out today of jhprimeminer v0.34 beta and includes all the hp8 algorithm changes.

Oh wow that's great. So basically with the new version of jhprimeminer, we can now mine at ypool with our higher PPS rate. Do I have this right?

Secondly, where do I get the new version of jhprimeminer?

I would say yes, though the mumus version would seem to be faster than HP8 or v0.34

There is now a fixed official v0.35 out, though I will stick with mumus for now.  PPS is not everything and mumus takes a while to experiment and find the best settings for your cpu.  The value of the shares produces is the most important thing, not the quantity.

PPS does not reflect your ability to find a block. At all.
Thus, the huge increase in pps sounds a tad fishy.

And anyway, it increased for everyone in the pool.
You went x10, but all your co-miners too, so...  :D

This is a good point. I also think it is fishy that it shows 10x the PPS. In fact, the actual payout to me in the pool stayed the same, despite the hugely increased PPS & shares. It doesn't seem to really have boosted my results. I don't understand how I can have more shares and pps and not more XPM payout though... What's going on here?

I am earning xpm much faster though in ypool with mumus.  Better than the official build

It doesn't seem to really have boosted my results. I don't understand how I can have more shares and pps and not more XPM payout though... What's going on here?
I am earning xpm much faster though in ypool with mumus.  Better than the official build
yeah mumus is the best for me on ypool too

jhPrimeminer (mumus' high performance version 3.0) <---optimized to auto-adjust to best settings and has GMP libs (I use this version but it an unofficial hack. Beware!)
https://www.dropbox.com/s/tauj21tvm06xk7y/jhPrimeminer-GMP-v3.zip (x64 windows executable)

Is there a 32 bit version of jhPrimeminer (mumus' high performance version 3.0)?

Or source code?

jhPrimeminer updated to v.035 (original had bug)
Added another GPU Miner thread (a working alpha, though not working well!)
A second blockchain explorer
Updated fees on the exchanges
XPM Prices crashing, world ending!

this. Is. AWESOME, just what I needed alongside my coffee.  XPM has my vote for long term, although I'm not personally in it for financial gain, but simply because they've done something to deserve it. the amount of power used in the United States to mine each day is upwards of 80k.  For useless work outside of getting coin. I'm prefer my power going to some other greater good besides finding block chains. t also makes me think we need to get on some wind power or solar power or something, cuz jeez that's a lot o money over a year in mostly wasted energy. (Unless you're heating your house with a rig ;) )

No max coins, though the amount of coins awarded slowly decrease with difficulty increases.  At some point though unless ASICs for primecoin are developed, existing processors will take a long time to solve the increasingly difficult prime chains.

Block solve time is variable, not fixed. Depends on when someone solves the current block.  The block refresh time though is 1 minute so transmissions move quickly.

Currently it is about 12 XPM, it is slowly decreasing.

It drops by a fractional amount constantly.  Not sure of the equation, I think it is based though on k (chain length)

That is a very good question - he did collect about 60 BTC of donations towards it.  I would be surprised if he scammer people though since he a well known user here.  Though personally, I am sorta happy this has remained a CPU only coin.

Well I use the  "-tune true" parameter for auto-tuning and then a press "C" after the first 20 minutes to also auto-optimize the L1 cache size.  Beyond that, I do not make any other changes

Digital Ocean: https://www.digitalocean.com/
Linode: https://www.linode.com/
Ramnode: http://www.ramnode.com/
Warrior VPS: https://www.warriorvps.com/

Nice thread !

But regarding ramnode it should be edited. Here is what they replied to me when I asked them a while ago what was their attitude regarding primecoin mining :

Hi *****,

the TOS is clear :

"HARDWARE RESOURCE USAGE

Client agrees not to run any processes on his or her VPS which create a CPU load above .9 on the VPS for an extended period of time or which cause a high CPU load on the host node for an extended period of time. In other words, client agrees not to use the equivalent of a full core for him or herself for an extended period of time."

Mining there will get your account suspended...

Thanks will remove it.  I have a feeling all the VPS might eventually suspend you unless you get a dedicated server since it "steals" resources from other users on the same server.

The best bet may be a less popular company since they probably kick people off when other users complain their droplets slow.  Less users means less likely for someone to complain.

Only two choices - keep signing up for VPS and milking them until account frozen or pay up for a dedicated server.  THe first method more time-consuming but also more profitable.  Dedicated servers expensive.

You can't milk VPS, they will cut you almost instantly !  Sometimes I could not even finish downloading the blockchain and was already suspended...

You can buy a server off ebay for example. There are cheap ones but you need to choose well and have space for them as they are known to be noisy and generate heat.

I have been looking into bulk buying dedicated servers, however, to get the full discount you need to hire them for a full 1 year  :(

Without the full discount I can get a Xeon E3-1230v2 (4 core @ 3.3GHz - turbo at 3.7GHz) , 16GB for $80 each per month if we bulk buy. If you can keep it a full 1 year then get a 10% rebate at the end.

I have one of these running at the moment and get between 1.1 and 1.2 chains per day.

With the current difficulty I put this down as breakeven at best so not really worth the investment.

Anyone got anything cheaper or more cost effective?

True, but it's still cheaper than the server he's renting !

Now the fact is that difficulty has stabilized so people keep on mining. The horrible ypool gets 20% of the blocks, where are mining the others for profit ?
Are they all desktop computers or are we missing the right vps providers ? I've been wondering about that quite a lot lately...

There's a fair number of normal home users who have a handful of desktops, then there are a few people with massive server farms, either through work or that they own themselves (think 100-1000 machines).  I think that makes up the lions share.  Some people bought VPS's on monthly plans and are still running them (probably already paid for), but dont know how profitable they are anymore.

you use your XPM adress as "user"

Switched my miners just now. It seems to work, let's see what happens when the next block is found :)
I have ignored ypool because their miner was only available for windows and/or without the latest optimizations, making solo mining still more interesting.
I am still on ypool using rd's variant 3.2 beta.  Let me know how the new pool works please!

The CCE3 test explorer has been moved to:

http://cryptocoinexplorer4.com:2001/

I had to move the test explorers to their own server to begin testing the new server environment. I cannot do this on current live coin servers.

The test explorer is now at test version 3.5, and the extra features are to be added in test version 4.

Once the sever environment basic testing is done and is ready for public testing , the explorer permanent address will follow the CCE address pattern (xpm.cryptocoinexplorer.com)

Hm.... I got 60 Amazon EC2 cc2.8xlarge instances (don't ask, don't tell), i.e. 32x60 =  1920 cores to play with. I ran one 24 hour test with ypool.net, using rdebourbon's v3.3 for x64 Linux. It gave me about 140 XPM.

I since then switched over all instances over to beeeeer.org, using primecoin-hp 0.6 RC1 x64 for Linux. I'm around 8 hours into staring at this now:

Code:
{
 "address": "///myaddress///",
 "payout_current": 0,
 "payout_pps": 0,
 "shares": 0,
 "blocks": 0,
 "shares_per_block": 0
}

> 2013-10-13 17:15:11 reward: 0.03914 fee: 0.00121 details
...

As can be seen, not one single block found (I got around 1/hr at ypool.net), only tiny, tiny shares and not a single payout -- yet. Should I worry?

What's the problem?!

Just wait? Please give me one good reason not to switch everything back to ypool

If you mean a miner that will run at greater than 10x the speed of the current miners, then probably not.
If you mean a miner that will run fast on a GPU, and doesn't need a powerful CPU [as the Bitcoin GPU clients were], then probably not.
If you are willing to pay for both a high-end graphics card and CPU, then a modest improvement may be achievable.
Time-frame? Unknowable.

More to the point, why on earth are you using a pool at all?  With this many instances you will have far better rewards by solo mining (believe me!).  Also, if you have a choice in which instance types you use, the 32 core ones are not the best value for money.  The miner is choked by L1 cache so actually performs no better than using 16 cores (try limiting the miner to 16 threads and you'll see virtually no change in performance).  The best instance type value for money is the c1.xlarge 8 core.  Take that from someone who has spent many thousands of dollars running aws instances XPM mining at up to 500 instances a day!

Actually anything AWS is not best value for your money.

Depends if you're running per hour or not.  I'm yet to see anywhere that can offer per-hour rates anywhere near as cheap as AWS spot prices if you want large numbers of instances.  But if you're looking for something to run for a whole month, then yes there are plenty of cheaper options

Great list and lots of useful resources in one place but one thing missing is how to set up private pool or am I missing it?

Currently not possible.  Nobody has released open source pool software for XPM, which is why there are only a handful of pools out.  The "work" for XPM can't be divided up in the same way as it can be for scrypt/sha-256 coins, so the share / payment strategies devised by XPM pools is markedly different.  Hence entirely new pool software needed to be written.  Unless you have a very large farm, you wouldn't benefit from a private pool anyway.  And if you did have a very large farm (in the 100's of machines) you would be better off solo mining anyway IMO.

Do you have recommendations on the best settings for each instance of VPS or a rig like how many core, mem, speed of PPS?

Have someone used VPS or dedicated servers for Primecoin mining?
If so, which service exactly did you use and how many chains/d did you get?

Hi,

As many of XPM mining pools listed here are no more running,
for now, you can have a try only with one of the two remaining Primecoin pool:

http://pool-prime.net/

Thanks for update.

Are there ways to earn this coin without mining, maybe by writing?
What do you mean?

I am also willing to share links and make YouTube videos or anything else.

Anything bloggy that can help the coin.
Ex: Devcoin has a whole wiki site that pays the authors, while at the same time bringing new users to Devcoin.
This coin was launched without any pre-mine, insta-mine and completely fairly.  As a result, there is no stash of coins held by the devs for a bounty.

So was Bitcoin, and I can earn them for chatting.
That is something Tradefortress has funded out of his own pocket largely to promote his eco-system of Inputs.io and Coinlenders.

That's great. Just wondering if you guys had anything of the sort. Devcoin pays for writing and today I learned that so does sex coin.

Fin you are the missing link * ;)  XPM rising again!!! 8)  weeeee
