For you to find out the good altcoin, the first thing that you need to do is it has to be a KYC or whitelisting for sure that coins is a legit one. This coin what I'm talking about can only be find in the ico first before it listed on exchange.

track record its whitepaper and roadmap of those alts, if those alts enter to a good market and the roadmap still have a long plan, and the whitepaper support the current condition, i think that will be a good alts

I use coinmarketcap to choose a altcoin to invest in it.I search for altcoin with a limited supply ,a high 24 volume and a low price than other altcoins with same  specification.

1. Team with enough experience and skills to build what they are promising
2. Some prototype of beta platform so that investors can have a look at test version before investing.
3. Low soft cap and hard cap so that only few investors can invest during ICO

If you're referring trading altcoins, this is what I can suggest before you trade. First check always the volume if it's high then probably there's a chance of massive price hike. MY suggestiong for finding good altcoins is to go to https://coinmarketcap.com and find the most recently added coins, which are usually new ones, and you will see that some of them go up A LOT when they are added, so you should take a small gamble on these.

Alternatively, you should read the announcements section of this forum and find the hottest coins being launched right now. These have the potenatial to grow a lot more since they are already viral here on Bitcointalk. Hope this helps you. :)

Use ICObench if you want to invest during the pre-ICO or ICO phase, there are some really good ones with great return potential.
Or, you could simply watch some YouTuber which are trust worthy (I recommend DataDash) which recommends different types of coins.

There are tons of small coins that don't have any trust and stability, it's so-called shitcoins. Be aware of them. I'd recommend look at Coinmarketcap to find out the best coins by market capitalization, price and volatility. Also check whether they ever looked like a scam, if they didn't feel free to buy some of them. I'd recommend to stick to top-20 coins.

I always look for an altcoin that has a big market cap but cheaper value. There are list of that altcoins which you can see in the top 20. Aside from that, i also research about the usage of each altcoin i have to buy.

Since someone recently asked me "what coin are you going to invest in", I'll explain how I came to my last investments
I just went through a bunch of these kind of posts for 5 hours and made a list of all relatively new coins.
So I kept how many times it was mentioned, by what kind of profile, what the reason was he mentioned it (good tech or just 'look at my coin').
How many times is of course irrelevant for smaller or rather new coins. I then listed market cap and whether the coin had already a serious spike or not and how long the coin is active. Then I picked about 8 that sounded interesting and are not already at a super high market cap.
Finally I researched team (I especially look at strong developers personally) and read the use case to see whether I believe in their ideas/project, then I check some reviews of other people. I ended up with:

DRGN - blockchain platform
QRL - Quantum resilient Ledger (quantum is probably coming faster than people think)
FLIXXO - Film distribution network
VIB - Network to connect music artists and bookers
EXRNchain (but this one is a risk, I've only put a small amount here) - inter blockchain gateway (transactions between different kind of blockchains)

One should not invest all his money in one Altcoin because it may not promising in the future and the price of almost every top currency is not stable. You have to take time. Analyse the project, the team and the product behind. Is an use for blockchain useful? Does it need a Coin/Token, or is it just a try to make some money? Discuss in telegram chats and in forum about the project, look objectively at the opinion of others. And when your sure and think thats a good project you want to support, buy the altcoin and hold it!

I still think that we need to have a shortlist, there are more than 1000s of altcoins.
Do you know any platforms that we can at least rank them according to some metrics? I'm not only talking about the common financial metrics like market cap, price but # of people in their communities, # news about them, a one phrase explanation about their project etc..
