Title: Bitcoin parity: what is a bitcoin worth?
Post by: Peter Lambert on July 08, 2011, 09:51:24 PM
What is worth 1 bitcoin? What would you buy for a single bitcoin? What would you sell for one bitcoin?

I would like this to be a historical thread, we can update it as the price of bitcoins change so we can look back at what a bitcoin is worth.

I would pay one bitcoin for:
- A good pizza.
- A t-shirt.
- An IMAX movie showing.

How creative can you be?

Historical suggestions
2011-07-08: A pizza
2011-10-08: One gallon of gasoline
2013-01-28: A box of See's Chocolates
2013-02-20: One ounce of silver
2013-03-28: One barrel of oil
2013-04-25: An android phone
2013-06-01: A used computer
2013-11-30: One ounce of gold

An ounce of gold.

Someday we will mine gold in space from asteroids or other planets, bitcoins are limited to 21M.

So for me an ouce of gold = 0.01 BTC.

I sell a month's subscription to my online 24/7* interactive automated counselling site PaulsRobot (http://paulsrobot.com) for 1 BTC. It's not really an entry-level site so I wouldn't expect many takers, but it all helps to get the idea of bitcoins out there.

*Eek. The site's offline right now as I changed something. Let's say 24-ish/7 instead. :)

Probably not too bad compared to mining. Innovative design does wonders

You can plant the plant outside, then it requires no electricity. It is hard to do that with bitcoins. (Although, there is an "environmentally conscious mining" thread talking about that too.)

True, but a lot is still grown indoors using electrical power so I think it could be an interesting comparison anyway.

True, but a lot is still grown indoors using electrical power so I think it could be an interesting comparison anyway.

Don't forget fertilizer cost, recurring equipment cost (bulbs, etc).  I think mining is more profitable overall...especially due to risk.  Very similar in power usage and initial equipment cost though.

I know it is not exactly 1 bitcoin, but I thought I would point out that at the site http://bitcoin-hosting.com/?page_id=4 (http://bitcoin-hosting.com/?page_id=4) you can get 1 year of webhosting for 1.5 bitcoin. So I guess going with the theme of the thread, you can get 8 months of webhosting for 1 bitcoin.

This site is setting their price in bitcoin, and it is a great deal.

I guess it depends on the size of the steak and the size of the pizza?

Whereas befoe you could get a nice steak dinner for a bitcoin, now you could only get a mediocre steak dinner. You might be able to squeeze two Little Ceasar's Hot'n'Ready pizzas out of a bitcoin if you are lucky.

  • A 24 pack of beer.
  • A pair of cheap shoes.
  • Dinner at a midrange chain restaurant.
  • A game of mini golf for 2.
  • A round of paintball for 2.
  • A tour of some tourist destination for 2.
  • 3 or 4 1940's-60's silver quarters.
  • 3 or 4 dozen eggs.
  • 3 or 4 months of web hosting.
  • ~4 gallons of gas.
  • 2 hours of my labour.

Why? Cause I can always buy more at a similar price. I want to buy everything in btc!

Or, if I want to use the money as savings, I can just convert them to bitcoins. That's the nice thing about having exchanges, if I earn USD I can convert them to bitcoins, or if I want to pay somebody who does not take bitcoins yet I can convert my bitcoins to USD.

You are saying the whole world is only worth 2.52 billion dollars? I think many economists would disagree with you. Just because there is a hard limit of 21 million bitcoins does not mean that each bitcoin is worth 1 21 millionth of the world, because they are just money and money has velocity.

1 bitcoin is worth 1 gun. I was at a gunshop the other day and I noticed you can buy a gun* at the price equivalent of one bitcoin**.

* It was a little Phoenix arms 22lr pistol, not anything huge but still a gun.

** Using the MtGox price, which I know is questionable but it make the parity nice and even.

A bitcoin now is about the same price as I saw an SKS listed a couple years ago. The prices on guns has gone up dramatically the past couple years, not quite as much as bitcoins but definitely one of the highest increases in any one item class. That is mainly due to the political climate, and the fear that more guns were going to be banned. [Tinfoil hat] I suspect some of this political pressure came from the gun makers themselves, they certainly get a much bigger profit now selling the same thing.

A crisp new $100 or two £50 notes buys most of a BTC.

I got a £50 note from the bank once, when I came to spend it the novelty made is easy to spend and be accepted, I know this isn't generally the case.

BTC has left coins behind long ago :-o £2 in general or in theroy £5 are the largest amounts in England for coins.

Can you edit some sequential dated historical ones into the first post? Like when a nail cost 1BTC

An ounce of gold.

Someday we will mine gold in space from asteroids or other planets, bitcoins are limited to 21M.

So for me an ouce of gold = 0.01 BTC.

Forget mining from space,  they will have an "atomic printer" and make anything they want. Whoever they are.

Making bitcoins could be tricky though :)

Q: Which would you rather have, eternal happiness or a ham sandwich?

A: A ham sandwich, because nothing is better than eternal happiness, and a ham sandwich is better than nothing.

Thus, a BTC is better than X, for any X.
