16gb micro SD card...$81 + tax + shipping.

That's 400-500% of the price at Newegg.

And yet you people think it's an incredible service to your community.  Are there none of you who are willing to offer a product or service that isn't completing ripping your fellow bitcoiners off?

Jalum,

Most small merchants cannot compete with big box retailers. When you buy 100,000 SD cards that allows you to get a significant discount. Unfortunately we do not have the same purchasing power as new egg.

We are not looking to rip anyone off. This is only one product in over 10,000. If it is priced too high for you we encourage you to pass on the purchase. Thank you for the heads up however, we will contact our supplier and pass along the message and see if we can negotiate a lower price.

Thanks for the feedback though!

You phrase that like the vendor is charging you $75 for it and you're just adding your $6 markup so you can keep the lights on.  Seriously?  I just told you where you can buy them (retail!) for a fifth of the price.

Fess up, you guys just take in these poor suckers' money/fakecoins, then you put an order in at newegg or better yet dealextreme, and dropship the order to the end user.  And pocket 400% profit in the process.  Rinse and repeat for your 20 jar boxes of organic applesauce and whatever other crap you guys shill.

HAHA I went back and you've changed all the pricing to bitcoins to hide how much you're ripping people off.  I love it!

Hmm...is it even legal for you to charge tax in bitcoins?  I doubt your state has a bitcoin wallet address for you to make monthly sales tax payments to.

Actually to be honest our cost is $59.00  for that 16Gb Card

When was the last time a merchant told you their cost? We are not looking to rip anyone off. Please take your Trolling elsewhere.

Why, on earth, would you buy from that supplier when you could buy it retail for a third of the price?  You're either being very deceptive or very incompetent, so why should anyone trust you with any money (fake or real)?

Jalum,

Thank you for your feedback. We will be contacting our supplier to ensure that the price is up to date. Once we receive a response from them we will take appropriate action. We are committed to finding the best deals we can and hope to build a relationship of trust.

Thank you again for bringing this to our attention. I'm sure you can understand we have our hands full with various aspects of the site and occasionally things will get past us.

It would in fact be illegal if we did not collect tax. As we explained on The Bitcoin Show at http://www.onlyonetv.com when someone pays us in Bitcoin we immediately take the portion we charged for tax and convert it to US Dollars and set that aside to pay the required sales tax.

The Tax laws cover barter as well and you are required to pay the equivalent tax in USD for that as well. Bitcoin transactions legally are very similar.

Also just to let people know currently we are only required to collect sales tax from customers located in California.

Don't forget to add your website to the wiki. You should add your website to the wiki trade page(https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Trade), and also create your own special page wiki page (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/BitcoinWorldMarket). It should help bring in some traffic.

I'd like to see nutritional information on the foods that you sell, and more information in general about all of the products.  Not to harp on the memory card thing, but it would be nice to see brand names, for example.

Your site is awesome and I love your open and professional attitude!
This is exactly THE gateway the Bitcoin economy needs for slowly getting merchants and vendors to accept BTC directly.

I already have a list of items I'd like to buy - expect a large order once you ship internationally.

Great job!!!

well, looks like so many items are overpriced, and that more than 100% in total cost for buyer...

nutiva hemp protein --- 1.38 btc !?!? before shipping and "sales fckn tax"
it goes for 10 bucks elsewhere, and even lower for bigger orders...

why is everyone so greedy ?
merchants, I mean.
and don't give me that expenses shit explanation...

They're not actually stocking any products.  They're just drop-shipping from a warehouse supplier.  That's why you won't see any information about products that weren't part of their massive copy + paste.  You place an order with them in BTC, they cash it out into USD, pocket their 100-400% profit, then log into their Amazon account and order the items (with USD) to be delivered to you.

I am getting SICK and TIRED of people posting that the products in the store are marked up! Next time, somebody better post a link where they can find the item at a cheaper cost.

And pay attention to see if the BitcoinWorldMarket merchandise comes in bulk, because I looked and some of it does.

To compare a random product on this store, and its equivalent on Amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/Sambazon-Organic-Amazon-Energy-6x4/dp/B0048IFOYM - $59,99
http://www.bitcoinworldmarket.com/products/1545-sambazon-organic-amazon-energy-6x412-oz.aspx - 4,24BTC * 14,48 =~ $61,40

I fail to see how this is an extreme markup?

EDIT: Ah, it seems Jalum is just a little pathetic troll (http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?action=profile;u=21610;sa=showPosts;start=0), probably better to just ignore him.

Well, I looked through the inventory, and my conclusion is ... it's a lot like a store that's near me in meatspace that I sometimes shop at.

Both are places I would almost never patronize, because the fact is, the prices on a lot of things suck. I saw a toaster oven that works out to about $88 if I assume Bitcoins are 50 cents lower than today's low. Problem is ... Well, I can get the identical toaster oven for $30, RETAIL, at five different places in my area.

Oh, and they want $45 for the toaster I just picked up at a store last month for $15.

Oh, and then there's the dog food. Yes, it's bulk. Which means it works out to a bit over three dollars a can. Yes, it's "natural", except I can get natural dog food, _RETAIL_, larger cans, for about $1.50 each locally.

Actually, what's really irritating is ... when I started writing this, I was going to compare it to a local grocery store where some stuff is much more expensive, so I only go there if I can't get a ride farther (the place is the only store in walking distance for me), but they actually do have some good specials ...

So while my roommate was cooking breakfast, I've been looking through the site, TRYING, and utterly failing, to find a single price I'd actually consider reasonable. Just started looking through the dog treats section. I find my dog's favorite rawhides there. For more than double what I pay for them when I have to go to PetsMart.

If this is the best "market" we're gonna get for Bitcoin, then boy is Bitcoin fucked. I don't feel like pointing at all the other outright gouging because I have other stuff to do today, but...

If I can look through a site for the entire time it takes my roommate to cook breakfast and not find one single item I know the store price of (they have stuff I don't buy and wouldn't necessarily know) that's within 150% of what I could pay for the item _NAME BRAND RETAIL_ ... well, swing and a miss.

give this guy a break. It's a free market. Merchants are free to charge whatever they want. If his stuff is too expensive, he will soon realize that no one is buying. Either he'll drop his price to be something more realistic or he'll move on, thats how the market works.

I'm sure 99% of bitcoin owners right now are the type of people who can easily compare prices between several websites to see what they are buying is too expensive or not.

Now I get your point, but this:

is just ridiculous. Do you really think this is going to be the single cheapest Bitcoin store in existence? Does the fact that one store is relatively expensive (and well, it seems that's mostly due to Amazon charging through the roof, as their markup doesn't seem to be that big), REALLY say anything about how Bitcoin as a concept is going to succeed or fail?
Just think about it rationally for a second.

Things like this *will* be how Bitcoin will get bootstrapped into a 'real economy'. Yes, it may be expensive right now, but the fact that there *are* stores that sell a lot of things for Bitcoins, is something very important for the 'image' people have of Bitcoin. When some company invents something new (say, the Philips Wake Up Light), do discounters immediately have a cheap no-brand alternative for it? No, it takes time.

It will be the same here. First the 'regular' stores pop up, before serious discounters appear.

Merchants are free to charge what they want, and I am free to give feedback on a public forum.

There's also a reason why I compared the prices to retail brick-and-mortar stores in my area, instead of the cheapest deal I could find online. Right now, if I want to buy pet food with bitcoins, I have two options. Transfer coins to the exchange, sell them, take the money. And that takes a bit. So I'd then go to a store, not online, because I'll notice he's low on food when he's got a few days worth left, not a couple weeks. This marketplace sells food I'd be fine with feeding my dog... except with the prices being well over double what I can easily find locally I'm not about to do that.

I give them a hell of a lot of credit for making the first place (that I know of) where I can actually buy dog food with bitcoins, but... if they want me to buy the dog food there, they'll have to be at least within parity of the brick and mortar pet stores in my area.

That's also why I gave specific examples of the things I looked at. That way they know what they're competing against, at least as far as whether I'm a customer, and can either ignore it, or look into it.

Are you comparing the exact same products? Comparing generic SD brand #1 against generic SD brand #2 is not going to help much.

That's the reason I only compared products of a specific brand.

Yeah, for that, I apologize. It's early morning for me, and that reads, well. A lot harsher than I was aiming when I typed it. :/

The problem is, I'm not comparing the prices to Wal-Mart. I'm comparing the dog food prices to the name brand food at the "high end pet store" in my area. I'm not comparing this place to the discounters. He wants more than twice for the cans of dog food as the most expensive dog food I've seen at the most expensive pet store in my area. If I compare the prices to Wal-Mart, then it's more than four times the cost -- but that wasn't the comparison I made, because, no, I don't expect the discounters to be the first that appear...

If the price was double the cost of the store brand dog food at Wal-Mart I wouldn't have even made a post. But it's not double the cost at Wal-Mart. It's more than double the cost of the "fancy" dog food at the local pet store. More than double the cost of the most expensive brand they sell. That's not "not being a serious discounter", that's gouging.

In some cases, yes.

Then again, people also pay twice the amount of money for a pot of brand-name peanut butter, while the brand-less peanut butter is exactly identical and from the same factory. That's how it works, apparently.

Now I get your point, but this:

Ok, I thought you were comparing it to the local Wal-Mart or similar. In that case it may indeed be over the top, but did you also compare it to the price of these products on for example Amazon? From what I have seen so far, it seems Amazon is charging through the roof for things, and he doesn't have *that* much markup (which basically means he should probably be looking for a different supplier).

It doesn't matter how many unused webstores you erect on the internet with wickedly overpriced goods if no one transacts on those sites.  This is like that thread where the guy is claiming that the bitcoin economy is doing awesome because the filesize of the page that lists bitcoin "merchants" is expanding.  Nevermind the fact that the majority of those links are broken, no longer accept bitcoin, or have never done a single transaction in bitcoins.

Gah. I managed to accidentally slice the last paragraph off my last post as I was posting. :/

I do want to add, I give these people serious credit for actually making what is, to my knowledge, the first place where I can actually buy dog food and kitchen appliances with my bitcoins. And I've already added them to my long-term bookmarks bar. I'll be peeking from time to time to see if they end up having stuff I want at prices I'm happier with -- and it wouldn't be the first time I've seen a business start out one way, then evolve. Especially because they may be first but probably won't be the last, and competition is good for everyone.

I didn't bother, because honestly it's not that relevant. :) I posted a few items I looked at that I'd actually be likely to consider ordering online with bitcoins if I could -- and what the competition is, for my situation. (I can't drive because of a vision defect, so I can't always get to the store with the lowest prices. I can only get to Wal-Mart instead of the pet store, for example, if whoever I'm tagging along with when they go shopping is going north on the interstate, instead of south.)

It does at least tell them what the actual result of their suppliers' prices is: that they're charging more than double what I can easily find at retail.

We appreciate your feedback and I am pleased to hear that you will be peeking in from time to time. I'm sure you can understand that the first few steps of a new business can be a bit shaky. We are working hard to roll out new features (like international shipping) and are always looking for a way to lower our costs where we can.

Please keep the feedback coming everyone!

Jonathan

It doesn't matter how many unused webstores you erect on the internet with wickedly overpriced goods if no one transacts on those sites.  This is like that thread where the guy is claiming that the bitcoin economy is doing awesome because the filesize of the page that lists bitcoin "merchants" is expanding.  Nevermind the fact that the majority of those links are broken, no longer accept bitcoin, or have never done a single transaction in bitcoins.
Ok. I'll bite. Again.

What have you done for Bitcoin?

I understand the need for Terms and Conditions on most sites, but adding the phrase "and I adhere to them unconditionally" just seems likely to alienate most bitcoiners (and other consumers, for that matter).

Thanks everyone for the feedback and we are excited that you are browsing our catalog of products and finding things you are interested in.

The fact is yes, our prices are going to be higher than amazon, higher than walmart, and even a bit higher than your local grocery store. We are not a deep discount store. We are more like a Whole Foods, better quality products that are unique and available at a premium. I can guarantee our markup is lower than anyone is calculating.  Most retailers have markups of 50%-200% if they buy and stock their items from a wholesaler and our markup is a fraction of that.

Most importantly the biggest difference is you are comparing our prices with the ENTIRE internet and retail economy of US goods and services. Yet almost none of those businesses accept bitcoin. You will always find a better deal if you shop around enough, but traditional online  and b&m retailers don't accept bitcoin. As a consumer you have to realize that a Big Box retailer, online or otherwise can offer deep discounts because they buy hundreds or thousands of an item. That creates a significant price break. We do not have access to those same price breaks.

We are just beginning this venture and we are working very hard to source quality products and offer them for Bitcoin. We will constantly be seeking to find better prices and be more competitive. Our first suppliers are just the beginning. Some items will be about even with what you pay in USD for the same item locally, some items may be priced far too high. Rate these items down as being too expensive, we want this feedback so we can remove them from our store.

We will be adding thousands of new products every week, many not available anywhere else. We hope you continue to check back with us. Purchase products you feel are fairly priced, and if you prefer to stick with spending your dollars for these items over bitcoin there are many other stores online you can spend your dollars at. But we hope you will choose to support the bitcoin economy and vote with your bitcoins on what products and services you want more of.

Thank you for the feedback on the SD Cards, I've removed the 8gb and above cards.

For many of our organic items please be aware many of them are sold in bulk by the case. We are working to sell individual items where ever we can but some of the price differences you may notice are due to the item being list as CASE PRICE. I will work on making this more clear in the product descriptions.

We sincerely thank you for all of your feedback and support!

give this guy a break.

This is impressive. I was so exited about being able to get any of those items for btc until I realized that only US-Shipping was available :(

Hopefully you'll get international shipping soon. And, if possible, with low costs, or perhaps the possibility to choose between high fees and faster shipping providers or lower fees with slower shipping providers.

Regarding the price difference, it makes sense for me. I actually think that the prices are quite fair for taking the risk to create an only-btc market and setting fixed prices on a extremely volatile economy.

So congratulations, thank you, and good luck.

16gb micro SD card...$81 + tax + shipping.

That's 400-500% of the price at Newegg.

And yet you people think it's an incredible service to your community.  Are there none of you who are willing to offer a product or service that isn't completing ripping your fellow bitcoiners off?

"Are there none of you who are willing to offer a product or service that isn't completing ripping your fellow bitcoiners off?"

I am! Even though most my posts read as brain farts (my way of taking a break), I'm in the process of developing a website that does just that--offering products and services significantly reduced when purchased with Bitcoin.

His site is sleek compared to this http://www.gngbaby.com/default.aspx powered by nopCommerce http://www.nopcommerce.com/default.aspx

Edit: Still on break and reading the rest of this tread. In re sale taxes, I'll solved that issued with my approach.

We recently were reviewing our prices and found an error in our site that was actually using the manufacturer's recommended retail pricing rather than our standard preferred markup which is lower. We have since corrected the pricing on our site and we encourage you to check through our catalog again!

Thanks everyone for the fantastic feedback and the orders! All orders that were placed with the higher pricing will be receiving an email notice concerning the price change and a refund of the overcharged bitcoin!

We really appreciate all of the response and feedback!

So you added items to your "inventory", then you published them for sale.  When myself and others called you out for pricegouging, you claimed it was because your suppliers were charging you too much.  But now it's because you didn't click the right checkbox when setting up your webstore?

The Vitamin Shoppe is selling the Nutriva Organic Protein through amazon for $8.91, the list price is $16.00. We offer it for .96 BTC at current market rates ($14.47). Our price saves you $1.52 over the MSRP.

A google search shows other online suppliers prices vary from $8.57 to over $20 for the same product. Local prices in my area are listed as $13.99 from the Vitamin Shoppe in Boston.

As a consumer with bitcoin we have a choice.  However at the moment if you would like to pay for items in bitcoin your only choice for this particular item is through amazon via spendbitcoins.com or us.

We are very excited to see spendbitcoins.com offer their services as this opens up a lot of possibilities for the use of bitcoin.  There are plenty of products however that we carry that Amazon does not. As we grow and bring other merchants into our marketplace we hope to have more and more products that are not available anywhere else.

The benefit to shopping at BitCoin World Market rather than amazon, is that more of your money ends up back in the Bitcoin economy than other alternatives. While many of our suppliers only accept $USD, we are starting to get a growing number of new merchants that prefer to be paid in bitcoin. By shopping with us you know that we are pushing to create economic trade in bitcoin. If you are really looking for the best deals and save the most money on everything you buy, then please convert your bitcoin to dollars and shop that way! For those who want to support the bitcoin economy by shopping using bitcoin we offer you another choice.

This is only the beginning for BitCoin World Market. As we grow and offer more products we hope to continue to find the best quality and value for your bitcoin.

Guys, guys, guys.
Anyone can charge whatever they want.
If there are people willing to buy it, I can sell my used stinky shoes for $500.
If it doesn't sell, the seller might adjust the price until someone buys it.
It is simple microeconomics.

On the other hand, it is not our business to care about how much profit is getting the business.
Either he is getting a deal, or using newegg, or using amazon.com, or has a own warehouse: WHAT THE HELL DO YOU CARE? It is none of your business, as long as he delivers what he promises.

Was just over there.  It's early days yet, but the prices on hemp t-shirts are competitive with others that I've seen for sale in dollars, at the current exchange rate.  I might well purchase a couple when I've finally got bitcoins to purchase with.

This is the sort of thing that needs to be out there if you want bitcoin to become a viable currency. :-)

This is total BS. I see a good website with BitQuestr being totally professional and up front, while Jalum tries to stick it up his *** every chance he can. It takes a heck of a lot to piss me off, and I hate to say it, but I'm almost their.

BTW, I changed the title of one of my YouTube videos yesterday and posted it on this board. Prior, I had 2 likes and 0 dislikes. It's now 2 likes and 3 dislikes. It doesn't concern me what it shows on YouTube for others to see. What concerns me is the mentally I see and read on this board, and now the actions they would take when given an opportunity. I LOVE BITCOIN, but these naysayers need to...(frankly, I don't know what the "need to" is, but I'm sure it's something). There are some great people on this board with great ideas, yet the trolls (beginning to hate that word--in fact, I know I HATE the word "hate") seem to want to diss them just for the sake of dissing. I was kindly accepted in your home (this forum). If I were in your real home and I acted like a JO, how long would it take you to kick me out the door with your foot squarely up my donkey? There was a door to enter this forum. I suggest we use the same door to kick the MF'ers to the curb.

Sorry for the rant all. Just had to get it off my chest. I'll feel better now, since changing my iPad (humor).

Here's that video I mentioned above: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4OzXjOKi9Q Read the description for a quick chuckle. Readers of this forum would understand the humor.

What does your stupid video have to do with bitcoins, though?
