Title: How do you screen ICO projects, what do you look at?
Post by: Kippah on March 02, 2018, 03:23:42 PM

Many of you are asking this question. Many of you spend hours researching new ICO projects, reading forums trying to find the proper information, get the knowledge and make the right move. I am sure you  are already aware that it is not the most efficient way. It takes time and all of us have to do the same ground work over and over again separately.

Of course there are rating websites, which tell us what the best ICOs should be but after reviewing 120 projects myself I had very different views on most of the ICO rated as the best ones.

Of course you can discuss with others on the forum but almost no one there does exhaustive and systematic research on ICOs, so lot of info but may not be relevant or very much biased by one’s opinion.

ICO investors need to protect themselves and unfortunately, ICOs are still largely unregulated so we cannot expect that somebody else will search for and punish “bad apples”.
So we decided crypto community needs a proper Due Diligence project based on the knowledge of you all. We would like to build it from the ground up and we are open to any comments, suggestions and ideas. However first we need to know, how you guys actually screen ICO projects, what you look at and what you maybe neglect. So that we can focus our attention on those things. If you fill in this survey you will help us understand exactly that. We are doing this for the community, to create better, accurate and independent ICO reviews.

Let’s discuss first how you screen ICO projects and what exactly you look at!

Those rating websites are full of it and completely unreliable. I always start out checking how much they want to raise cause if it is too much I can move on without wasting time reading everything. If they raise an amount I can stand with then I start looking at their team, if I don't like it then I move on to another ICO. If I like the team I start reading their problem solution or whatever their USP is and then everything else.

Agree. It is really hard to find reliable ICO review sites. And if you would like to get some insider view, you probably need to pay for it. I recommend cryptobrifing.com to you. It seems to be a legit site to provide high quality reviews.

These ICO rating sites are everything else but rating sites. Most of them are paid for featured spots. Experts are not experts. Some bots give random ratings. Awful service. Don't use them. Zero value in them.

So how do you screen the projects? Do you do it by yourself and if so what do you look at?

Well, there is a more or less comprehensive list here.

This post is okay, too. https://medium.com/birds-view/cryptoassets-a-crowd-sourced-evaluation-due-diligence-framework-98b921c82731
But. The spreadsheet cites Argon Group as "best in class service provider". The guys who did Blockchain Capital, lol.

First I will look at the project itself. If it has a good objectives that will help our economy to improve. Second I consider the team if they are true to their profile posted on their website. I analyze if they are really in capable of making the project possible.

I really invest in ICO's to make some earning in short term, so I'd see for these who offer the quickest ROi %.

Exactly what I did every time I invest on an ICO project. Sometimes they are just posting a fake photo in their time just to show that they are really a part of the team, we have to check all of the social medias of the team most of them that is a legit member of a one team has a legit account in LinkedIN.

the first i will look into the features inside the project,,
because for now most of ICO project didn't have an original idea,
just a few project thats have an original idea with new features
after that i will do a deep research with their team members of the project

This seems simple but it will get more complex when you do it: First reading WP and judging the website if it looks professional or scamish. Then research the project (the idea and its feasibility) and the team behind it.

That's also a good point in screening an ICO project, sometimes I do that because in joining ICO campaign it is important that you need to check first how much would the project would raise. We cannot deny the fact that that's the first thing that we actually considered and by that you will also considering reading the platform of the project.

Help me do the survey on ICO investor behavior, fill in this questionnaire and after two weeks I will post results in this thread!

I believe the same, they are unreliable. Others offer reliability but have to pay in return.
Anyway, while checking USP is great, I also check for development plans and the team that holds it together. If they a good or excellent track record then all the better. In addition, check if they excellent visibility in various social media - it proves identity and have nothing to hide.

One of the first things I look at are the team members, advisory, and partners. Having reputable people working on the project is the most important thing to the project for me.

Next, I look at the roadmap, whether the concept is feasible.

Then I take a look at the reviews, community members, and the white paper.

I look mainly few aspects:
1. The idea - is it real and achievable?
2. The team - do they have enough experience or no?
3. The whitepaper from the beginning till the end. It is given to be read. So read it!
4. The roadmap - when will the product be released ? If it is more than year, for me this is problem.
5. The product - is it the product interesting and will it be useful once it is done?

These are the main thing that I check in given ICO before I decide to invest/participate in bounty campaign.

MartoValenti do you have profound blockchain background to evaluate blockchain projects in terms of viability? I would say I have good understanding of blockchain technology (for a layman) but I dont think I could evaluate projects from tech perspective since that requires you to read the code in a profound not superficial way. I guess most of us cannot do it but it is an important  aspect of viability of the project/ So who to rely on in case  you cannot do it by yourself?

When I look in ICO projects I see to it that this project will attracts people who will use them in future time, will it be useful or does the people need it? Because as much as the project is good but cannot attracts the market, I don't think they will earn success from it.

I will focus first on the team members and whether the team is good enough.
But it is important to pay attention to the technical route and white paper of this token.
Finally, see if the project is open source.

The way to look at getting a good ICO project is to learn a lot about the ICO project. You need to find out the staff, investors, their business ideas. These are the three criteria you need to check carefully.
You just need to spend a day to be able to look at all three criteria in the most detailed. And one more thing I recommend is not to listen to the rumors from the articles, let yourself learn about that project. That will help you make a smart investment decision.

I did the survey.

I find the standard things the most important, but often also take the hype factor into account. Also, high risk ICO's could be very worth the investment once listed. But usually I invest what I can miss, and don't really mind missing it.

Only some sites were having a lot of credibilities and did so many audits and community vote before it will be listed in the ico list. Some said the majority of ico sites review was getting paid from the fraudsters to promote the project on the platform. But it makes sense for me. Honestly even cointelegraph doing the same thing with it to earn more money from the fraudsters.

Most people will give you the same answer, such as concept project, road map, hard cap and allocation. But I believe people will not do that anymore, they will replace their trust depend experience only. Experience built from practice and fix the mistakes, nothing else. Learning by doing is more better than wasting time collect ICO information or follow signal. Maybe you're not agree with me but that's what I see and I do that until now.

Most of those rating websites are busy looking for traffic and some ICOs to pay them before they even add them and it has turned to money making venture than it being a community service. So many of them have been known to list scams before and then end up deleting the rating once they confirm it to be scam and that sucks. It is good the OP is coming up with something like this and I hope they do not end up like one of those rating sites.

OP's suggestion is a very nice one and one that is absolutely needed for investors that are lazy to do proper research on their own. I feel sometimes, a lot of people look for high level of information when they should concentrate on the most important things first and that is where it gets bad. The team in particular is one that is very important to dig up first and if you have that planned out coupled with some other factors to check out, that would be nice.

Thank you Rickadone, I (OP) have a research background (its my official job actually) so we have high standards on integrity and since money has never been any incentive to me I will make sure that is kept also while the project is being developed. I very much appreciate your comments but if you want to contribute a bit more to this initiative, please fill in my survey. In that way I can collect data systematically and I can prove what investors are neglecting the most and on the other hand what aspects they really pay attention to. The more data the better basis for the project. So please if you havent done yet so, just spare 4 minutes of your time with the survey below.

Question no. 2.

When you already invested in an ICO, how do you monitor your holdings?

How do you follow-up? Do you follow the social media, updates, do you follow whether they go accoridng to the roadmap?

Let me know.

For me first thing to do if you're looking for a good and  reliable ICO project you should read and seek also some information on their ann thread 'cause all of the feedback of ICO will be found on it. and also for me to determine which is classified i'm also visiting their site's , to figure it out how old the site's ,cause most of the ICO nowadays is fresh and not trustworthy .so if you're looking legit ico you should visit also their sites and ann thread 'cause that is the easy way to determine if its good or not.

My way of choosing an ICO is very common to the others in which first i will read the whitepaper and check the CEO and the rest of the team profile thru the google if their listed records on their profiles are all true. Then i will read carefully of their products to ensure that it is not fake and to see if it is a promising investment. Then the last thing is their activities thru twitter and facebook to see if they are really working for their projects.

In the very beginning I estimate the project site. Then I go to their social networks and watch how many subscribers. Next, I look when the accounts in social networks have been created. After that I read their book and then I make an input on this project.

For me, it is the whitepaper (not the entire thing though, at first). I read the executive summary/abstract. If I find it interesting, I look at the team behind the project. I have to be able to verify the teams profile for example a LinkedIn profile for starters. Then I look at the project timeline (stages) how they intend to run, milestones etc. the roadmap helps in this case. Finally, if they have added financial projects, which can verified by a third party finance person, then I will give it a short.

It is definitely difficult to choose a good ICO. Yes, we have website which includes reviews from different perspectives. However, this can never be trusted. This can be made of the member of the team to attract investors. So, the best thing to do ks analyze their website and other related articles about them before investing. Be wise!

For me first thing to do if you're looking for a good and  reliable ICO project you should read and seek also some information on their ann thread 'cause all of the feedback of ICO will be found on it. and also for me to determine which is classified i'm also visiting their site's , to figure it out how old the site's ,cause most of the ICO nowadays is fresh and not trustworthy .so if you're looking legit ico you should visit also their sites and ann thread 'cause that is the easy way to determine if its good or not.
yes I agree, one of them by visiting ANN thread them by asking the project development plan, so that developers can open a dialog with potential investors. In addition, we can see the future prospects of ICO by understanding whitepaper that has been provided, because the whitepaper is the main benchmark for potential investors to be able to invest in it.

These ICO rating sites are everything else but rating sites. Most of them are paid for featured spots. Experts are not experts. Some bots give random ratings. Awful service. Don't use them. Zero value in them.
Obviously! They would rather collect those huge bucks to get their projects out there to their trusted members without considering the long run effect of it. Now, a lot of investors do not really care much about ICO rating websites and will rather go through the necessary details and research by themselves before they even invest in anything.

It is absurd that what was created to help the community at the end just have the motive to get popular for the monetary gain. Not saying the monetary gain is bad, but at least it makes sense to always keep integrity in check.

Pretty hard bro! Pretty hard!! I would rather do my own proper digging on any project by investing the team, checking all that I need to know if there is a product or not before even considering going through any other information. The rating website are after the monetary aspect and as long as that is in play, they care less about the investors and the community at large and they are only good when they are new, just wait for them once they become a household name in the community.

I look at MVP and team
MVP what?
Question no. 2.

When you already invested in an ICO, how do you monitor your holdings?

How do you follow-up? Do you follow the social media, updates, do you follow whether they go accoridng to the roadmap?
Just be updated with everything that is connected to that ICO that you invested so that from time to time you know what's happening with your money and the ICO itself. Most of the time road maps aren't followed because of some reasons that they have to pursue some other things to make that ICO better, it's situational.

Yes, no matter what)) honestly) even at this time to spend) a little on the project, on the team, how much they want to collect and how many people participate. But that's if I'm in the bounty. Of course, if you want to invest, you need to study very carefully.

I usually go and check for the team first whether or not they are using real names an also check their background whether they have experienced already about IT and blockchain.  Second is the community involved on the project because the more participants join in , the better indication of an ICO that is likely to succeed.

This project is an machine to machine payment network. Their aim is creat a blockchain which is 5 times faster than Bitcoin. And one of the things that make me think this is the best because they will give you free 450.000 token even if you join their ICO or not, just do some task for them and you get your token (450,000 will be airdropped to 20 000 first users)

Even then you could end with a wrong ICO investment if you didn't analyze every detail. With every new day, scammy developers are getting more smarter based on the fellow colleague scammer mistakes with another ICO projects. They can successfully hide their shady intentions with the highly organized plan, greatly written whitepaper, false market cap and the best of all, the false advisors. These factors can all be masked for the investor to not realize he has been cheated till the middle of the campaign.

Now or then there is some good ICO project but with the mass of the false projects, I am getting tired of the finding the proper project.

You need to be careful while investing in ICO. There is no regulatory body who can control ICOs so it's your duty to analyze and research an ICO properly before investing in it. You need to check various things while investing in ICO such as whether a working product is there or not. Before investing in any ICO, I look for many points. A working product or prototype must be there,  project should have strong team, website should have all the details, whitepaper and roadmap should be clear. I also believe that ICO should have good rating on different ICO rating websites. After checking all these points, I invest a small amount in ICO

I was also relying on ICO rating sites once but when I saw an ICO in the list and found it in the forum that has almost no one participated, I started to have my doubts if the list is really accurate. Maybe they could also be paid as advertisement. Now I just look at the team and find some familiar faces that has been in successful ICOs but cannot still be more than 80% sure of it.

To be honest I do not remember precise number, but it should be little bit over 10. It was before better to invest during ICO. Nowadays, when ICO ends and token are available in exchange sites, the price become usually lower than ICO. I believe this is because of boundy hunters whose numbers have increased a lot in the past year. Boundy hunters usually dump their coins at low price.

I try to do research on -
1. The team - their track record with previous ventures, github, linkedin profiles - a good mix of technology and business expertise is what I generally look for
2. The whitepaper
3. What using the blockchain enables for the project and if a seperate token is required.
4. Activity on Github
5. How the team engages the community on telegram, twitter, reddit, medium.

I agree with you here. For me, the whitepaper is usually the crucial factor here when it comes to deciding whether the particular ICO is worth investing into or not. I analyse the whitepaper thoroughly and decide whether it would lucrative to invest into the ICO or not. If satisfied, I proceed to check out the team, social media interactions, marketing campaign etc.

I don't usually fall for the hype driven campaigns and check the coin thoroughly before deciding to invest. These tips almost always helped me earn profits and keep losses to a minimal until now in the crypto market.
