Title: Do you buy or sell crypto for cash?
Post by: Crumple Cat on March 20, 2018, 12:19:59 PM
Hey guys,

I'm doing a little research now about using cash (paper money) for direct buying or selling crypto in different countries and I need your help. Could you share please your experience of such deals in your country? In what way are you doing this? And what were the problems or the advantages of this way? If you can, please tell about which country you speak, then this research will be more practical.

The results of this research can help improve Dether dapp the beta release of which will be in the coming days (the first dapp beta release for Business already launched http://shop.dether.io). The main strategic mission of this project is the breaking barriers to the mass adoption of Ether and crypto in general. The team believes that a convenient, mobile, decentralized, p2p way to buy and sell crypto for cash is able to significantly contribute to this and their opinion is shared by Consensys in the person of Ethereum co-founder, Joseph Lubin, which support them. I'm also long-standing and sincere contributor to Dether and I will be grateful to you for your help in this research :)

p.s.
Recently, Dether team interviewed citizens of ten countries to learn how to deal with the purchase / sale of crypto in general, in their countries. If you are interested to know what crypto enthusiasts from Tanzania, Czech Republic, Senegal, Vietnam, Congo, Philippines and others countries talk about it, you can get acquainted with the results of the interview in this Medium article https://medium.com/@DETHER/the-good-the-bad-and-the-ingenuitive-what-it-is-really-like-to-buy-and-sell-cryptocurrency-8fdfbfc2aee7 (https://medium.com/@DETHER/the-good-the-bad-and-the-ingenuitive-what-it-is-really-like-to-buy-and-sell-cryptocurrency-8fdfbfc2aee7). In this thread, as you already understood, I want to learn about the ways of buying / selling crypto directly for cash.

We do a lot of exchange of crypto for cash and vice versa in my country and i am  also into that. It is quite easier to do that than getting it done on exchange site. The way it is done is that:
A social media platform is created, where the admin, who is a trusted person, becomes the middleman between the buyer and the seller. Most times, we may not know the middleman in person, by in a way, we may have built trust in him.
I have found this to work effectively and i like it.
I believe i have been able to make meaning contribution.
If you have any other question as regards this, i am ready to provide you with answers.

Localbitcoins is working flawless for me. I already made over 50 deals there.
Also, there are few companies what are working as a middleman with 2-5% commission. But this is the way to get your money in bank account really fast.

Hey, thanks for your feedback and your responsiveness :) I really have questions.
In passing, if you can, please tell about which country you speak, this will make the research more practical.
Regarding the way you said about it, yes, it's clear to me, but what are its shortcomings at your discretion? Or are they not now?

Very rarely and only with my friends. I got the bulk of my crypto currency for work. This is a very convenient way because there are no commissions (except commission for transaction) and taxes. In the future, I plan to start more actively dealing with crypto currency, perhaps I will open my exchange office.

So in my country it is very common practice to buy different tokens for real money. On my own experience, I can say that I was selling several times ETH, I just looked for a person who has cash and we exchanged at the rate

Absolutely yes, i've being buying and selling crypto for cash here in my country for years using luno.com and some other Trusted Escrow groups. I as well sell my asset for FIAT through peer to peer system, where you sell to someone you know like a friend or we have a meeting point if there is neccessity for that but all over trust is absolutely necessary in anywhere you are selling or buying. Crypto is of no use to us if we can't exchange it to our desired FIAT at our convenient time.

I always try to buy cryptocurrencies with fiat money. Because i dont want to spend other cryptocurrencies to buy other cryptocurrencies. Theres an example. When i invest in a Initial coin offering, and i pay with Ethereum, they wll need some months before they got listed on an exchange. So in this months it can happen that the thereum price will go 3x or more. And when you got your tokens or coins on the exchange, they have the same price like on the ico. Thats why i dont like to buy cryptos with other cryptos.

You can only afford to buy more in this present market. All coins are in their lowest you can get them for the rest of this year. Grab as much as you can now!

I tried it one time. Last year january i bought 3 bitcoins with the price of 790 usd per coin from a friend of mine i know it's very cheap compared on the actual price bitcoin that time which is 1000 usd and i held it for almost a year and sold it in last november with selling price of 15k usd per coin.

Anyways in my country the only way to buy bitcoin thru coins.ph a wallet/exchange site you have to verify your identity first before cashing out your bitcoins and turn into money and also they have limit to depositing money and withdrawal of your money.

Thank you for your feedback. But did I understand you correctly...Sometimes you sell your BTC or ETH to other people and directly for cash? That is, you meet with another person, send crypto to his wallet and he gives you cash (paper money)?

There are quite a few stock exchanges to buy crypto currency for money.
I usually just sell. If there is ETH, then you can sell it immediately with the output to the card. And if there is a token, I first exchange it for any crypto currency, but then you can sell it and put it on the card.

Btw, pay attention to the possibilities of Dether dapp for opening an exchange office. It really becomes very easy and convenient with it. In addition to all, your exchange office will be on the global+local map of the dapp and you can increase its "rating" and attendance by different ways within the dapp. In fact, in this way, any street business can additionally become an exchange office and have additional income. Whether it's a coffee shop, food-truck on the beach or any store :) That is, any business using Dether can buy and sell crypto for cash and also accept crypto as payment for its goods and services.

But I did it through friends and acquaintances with whom we simply exchanged cash for cryptocurrency with each other.  But your idea is very interesting and I think that it will help many, including me, because now it's hard to find people to exchange

Coins.ph is one of the oldest exchanges in my region so I can also vouch for it. You do not need to go to the office, buddy. Everything is online, you can transfer money to them via many different methods. I would recommend you first check out all the exchange websites and see what fits your needs. Most important advice, is to achieve full verification at any of these exchanges before even committing to buy anything. you do not want to get stuck just because you were not verified.

Not quite easy, because if you are exchanging millions of dollars assets from cryptocurrencies you will be questioned by the banks, best thing to do is sell it on p2p or person2person,because you wont need these banks with your transactions and the government wont see your fiat assets so you wont be taxed.

EU county.

What I wrote is valid for almost all EU counties. I have friends in few of them and in all you have SEPA from exchanges like kraken, localbitcoins, middleman companies and ATMs in the big cities.

I never bought nothing with cash, not even bitcoin. I started from zero, I had computer, internet and a lot of will and a big wish. I started with earning bitcoins on faucets, much later I invested that bitcoins in other cryptocoins. I cashed out a lot of money in last couple years, maybe not a lot for some rich guy but for my town standard its more then enough, there are months when I had so good gambling and trading that I made 3 times more here then with my regular everyday job.
I only sell crypto for cash, only when I need cash. I would like my country to be more progressive but it's not, so I need hard cash for paying things around.

Regarding your question, as you understand in different countries, the situation may differ (current comments in the thread definitely confirm this) and I found it expedient to find out directly from those who had such deals. I live in Nigeria and I make use of Luno (www.luno.com) for all my transactions both for crypto  and fiat money. I directly exchange my ethereum from MEW or BTC to luno interface who now exchange to dollar and pay me directly to my local currency (Naira) in my local bank. If i want to buy any crypto coins Luno has an interface with my local bank GTB, all i have to do is to have the money in my account in GTB and then initiate the buying and it will be concluded with the crypto showing in my balance in Luno.

as for the anonymity of cash, i don't care for it much. i pay my taxes and i am not doing anything shady or illegal so i am not planning on hiding anything.

I did use cash in buying Bitcoins before but it was on a peer-to-peer basis. And there was really no actual fiat cash that changed hands. Everything happened online. I received my Bitcoins and I then transferred the money to his bank account. There was no escrow even as all my previous transactions of purchasing Bitcoins happened between me and either a person I personally know or someone who has been vouched trusted by someone else close to me. As for the selling, I do the conversion through a local wallet which would also deposit the same to my bank account.

The only way to buy Bitcoin for fiat is to use localbitcoins. Some time ago I was stupid  and greedy enough to try to avoin localbitcoins fees and sell BTC directly  to the other people. Spent the whole evening looking for a buyers on the local forum, most of the people I've talked with were absolutely inadequate and during that time Bitcoin lost about 5% of its price (the average amount of fee on my country) and I still didn't find a propper buyer.
I often buy and sell cryptos for fiat but it is a real pain in the ass if you are trying to avoid localbitcoins.

Yes, I buy crypto because this is an opportunity for me to gain big profits in the future. And also, I always plan all my transaction so that in any cased it will continue to drop I have still some second options to take. People will always say buy at low and sell it high so probably if there is a crashed then this is the time to buy.

There was no escrow even as all my previous transactions of purchasing Bitcoins happened between me and either a person I personally know or someone who has been vouched trusted by someone else close to me. As for the selling, I do the conversion through a local wallet which would also deposit the same to my bank account.
Sending your money to any exchanges and sending money to the personal account is not same. nobody will ask you why sent money to that person but if you deposit money to exchange site you may face the problem.

If we know personally with whom we are doing business or any of our closed one refers someone we can trust them, but a believing 3rd person is risky I never tried this method. but now i have to try because our government is putting a lot of rules.

Thank you for sharing your experience and nuances. This is very useful for my research :)

No way Jose I sell Bitcoin or buy Bitcoin with cash. The fees on those Bitcoin ATMs is absurdly high and I won't consider using it until it becomes a nominal fee and or I actually need the service. Don't see a point of using a Bitcoin ATM when I could use an online exchange that is about 800% cheaper to use :D.

Yes i use to buy and sell bitcoins in single platform, theres local exchange that offers you to buy and sell our coins.though theres a big difference when you sell your coins, and when you buy from them almost more than 3% which a big amount for a buyer..but its ok because easier and accessible for any time

The only way to buy or sell bitcoin for cash is ATMs. For me, this is the most unprofitable and expensive way. I do not understand how you can sell cryptocurrency for cash through the phone. It reminds me of a Scam. I have met a few of the services that offer these services via the courier. But there we are talking about large sums. And these are 100% black circuits. It is dangerous for everyone. For the seller and for the courier.

Of course I buy and sell crypto currencies for fiat money. We have local exchanges, it's too easy for us after 2013. Before that it was hard because directly trading coins was risky. Now all we do is sell on the local market and give a withdraw order. In weekdays we get our money in only 1-2 hours. There is no regulation about it here yet.

There are quite a few stock exchanges to buy crypto currency for money.
I usually just sell. If there is ETH, then you can sell it immediately with the output to the card. And if there is a token, I first exchange it for any crypto currency, but then you can sell it and put it on the card.

Hey, you probably didn't understand me correctly, although it's my fault. I didn't specify what I mean by paper money and direct purchase/sale of crypto using them. I already specified this in my original post :)

The results of this research can help improve Dether dapp (https://dether.io/ (https://dether.io/)) the beta release of which will be in the coming days.

I only got acquainted with the crypto-currency world, then I bought a crypt for currency for fiat money.
My friend assisted in buying me and I am very grateful for this.
He taught me to trade at the exchanges.

Buying or selling crypto for cash directly? Do you mean something like face to face deal?
If it is what you mean then I never done it before, I think it is because most crypto trader will prefer to use an exchange for it for easier transaction. Dealing with crypto face to face also not really recommended imo, as it is very dangerous if we do not know who are person we are going to deal.

In my country the best way to either buy or sell cryptocurrencies is through face to face deal once you get to the exchangers office you send the bitcoin to his/her wallet and at the end the value of the bitcoin you send will be calculated in the value of your local currency base on the exchange rate of dollars to your local currency at that time and the money transfer to you bank account or given to you in cash.

Yes, I sell the crypt for cash. I recently had to sell a little ether.
not the best time, but i want to eat)

Thank you for sharing your case :) Could you tell me exactly how you sold your ether for cash?
And by the way, it turns out that you needed to change ether to your local currency in order to buy food, which requires time and additional costs. Direct purchase of food for crypto would be more profitable and convenient. This is why Dether team focus on this issue and offer special opportunities. Any local\street business can connect to the app, place itself on the map as a business and receive ether and other crypto later as payment for their goods or services.

I bought many times the cryptocurrency for cash. But I did it through friends and acquaintances with whom we simply exchanged cash for cryptocurrency with each other.  But your idea is very interesting and I think that it will help many, including me, because now it's hard to find people to exchange

Can't really think of a reason why you'd want to buy crypto for cash though, maybe if you're super limited but idk.

we the few who are into cryptos have no option like exchanging
for other goods and services. The best we can do with our cryptos is to sell for cash.
The only problem is that the transaction has to be confirmed before you get your cash.

I try not to sell the coins that fast because the price could get much better than what it appears. Bitcoin is a common proof of that.

Yes, sometimes I buy and sell crypto currencies in cash, though most of my transactions are usually through bank. I am from country India. I usually find people selling or buying for cash near me using localbitcoin.com. The advantages of buying in cash is that you can do face to face deal and there is no possibility of scam, moreover as the transaction is not visible in bank or anything, you could save yourself the trouble of paying tax.

Localbitcoins is working flawless for me. I already made over 50 deals there.
Also, there are few companies what are working as a middleman with 2-5% commission. But this is the way to get your money in bank account really fast.
Indeed, localbitcoin.com is the best site for buying and selling of bitcoin locally in one’s own country. Though, I would like to inform you that here we are talking about deals and transactions in cash and not about online transactions and getting money in bank.

There is difference between the two that you people must understand before posting. Localbitcoin.com provides deal in cash, though the rates are bit high as compared to other payment methods. Transactions done through localbitcoin.com are done via middleman and both seller and buyer are protected from possible fraud and scams.

Well, I don’t think you are talking about cash here instead you are talking about buying and selling of crypto currencies using online payment methods such as NFT and IMPS because as far as I know, cash deals cannot be possibly done on social media in some groups. And you surely don’t need a middleman if you are transacting cash to cash in face, do you? So, your contribution in the field will be to first understand the difference between online transactions and cash transactions.

In my site there have no way to make cash with cryptocurrency. Some short buyer take BTC or ETH then I make some cash. But big withdraw never possible in my site. It is major issue for me.

Thank you for your feedback. But did I understand you correctly...Sometimes you sell your BTC or ETH to other people and directly for cash? That is, you meet with another person, send crypto to his wallet and he gives you cash (paper money)?
Exactly my point. Many people here are mistaken about the word cash. They are referring cash to as Fiat money here instead. Cash is paper money people and not the money that Is kept in bank or online wallet and transacted via online transaction system. People are mixing up the two different topics of buying and selling with fiat money and buying and selling with cash (paper money) locally.

Thanks for opinion, but I don't think that this is a matter of wisdom, but rather of practical relevance in a concrete situation.

To be fair it’s fairly easy to grasp the basic concept and advantages of blockchain. It’s much harder to know when to sell and buy. I’d be in the other line though because there’s no way you can trust some other random to tell you when to buy and sell, but there is always more depth to and possibilities for blockchain use to learn/think about.

Hey, thank you for sharing your experience, but how did you sell crypto for cash? ;D

Since I am a bounty hunter I got tokens from bounties and airdrops for free and if they are listed on exchanges I can sell them if I need fiat but sometimes I hold them and wait for it to grow. My friends also do the same but they do it always with their crypto.

As of now, I have only sold crypto for cash. Buying cryptos is much work but I might do it in the future. Anyways, selling crypto for cash is like selling a product then earning an exchange from it. Here in the Philippines, I already bought clothes and wrist wear as a salary-like from selling crypto. And it is pretty good. It might take too much work but it is worth it.

Few weeks ago i bought around 10k usd crypto with cash. Didnt use any wire transfers cause one of my friends was cashing out from crypto.
I never miss opportunities lol. Wire transfers are not my style.

Cool, thanks for sharing :) It would be interesting to know in such cases your opinion on Dether dapp, could it be suitable for you to conduct such deals in your country?

I live in Nigeria and I make use of Luno (www.luno.com) for all my transactions both for crypto  and fiat money. I directly exchange my ethereum from MEW or BTC to luno interface who now exchange to dollar and pay me directly to my local currency (Naira) in my local bank. If i want to buy any crypto coins Luno has an interface with my local bank GTB, all i have to do is to have the money in my account in GTB and then initiate the buying and it will be concluded with the crypto showing in my balance in Luno.

Thank you for such a detailed feedback, Rumexx!
This is so useful for my research :)

I never bought crypto for fiat money. But I sell regularly. I do this through Russian exchanges that work with fiat. Everything is clear and accessible. The transfer is credited to the bank card.

Hey guys,

I'm doing a little research now about using cash (paper money) for direct buying or selling crypto in different countries and I need your help. Could you share your experience of such deals in your country? In what way are you doing this? And what were the problems or the advantages of this way? If you can, please tell about which country you speak, then this research will be more practical.

The results of this research can help improve Dether dapp (https://dether.io/ (https://dether.io/)) the beta release of which will be in the coming days. The main strategic mission of this project is the breaking barriers to the mass adoption of Ether and crypto in general. The team believes that a convenient, decentralized, P2P way to buy and sell crypto for cash is able to significantly contribute to this and their opinion is shared by Consensys in the person of Ethereum co-founder, Joseph Lubin, which support them. I'm also long-standing and sincere contributor to Dether and I will be grateful to you for your help in this research :)

I think most of the members on this forum are investors rather than buy crypto for cash. For the most part, people who buy crypto for cash will often be less familiar with forums for professional investors to discuss  :D :D

Judging by the vote, I cann't agree with you :) In fact, buying crypto for cash is the same investment.

The current situation is obviously a bear market. For a digital currency that can only be used for a long time, it is better to sell accompaniment currency or sell it because it is likely to be declining for several years.

i have bought bitcoin with cash but never anything else and i don't want to do that either because i don't want to turn my money into altcoins. what i want to do is to turn my money into bitcoin (so i buy bitcoin with fiat) and then i want to make profit on the bitcoins that i already have (so i start trading altcoins which means i buy altcoins with bitcoin).

as for the anonymity of cash, i don't care for it much. i pay my taxes and i am not doing anything shady or illegal so i am not planning on hiding anything.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Personally, I don't think that buying crypto for cash is a matter of hiding something. This is just a way that is convenient in certain situations.

Thank you for your feedback. This will be useful for my research.
Of course it would be cool to know what country you are talking about :)

Yes, I mean exactly p2p deals. The issue of security certainly has a place here, but how can you minimize risks? For example, Dether introduces a rating system for sellers, that is, you will see the current status of the seller and will be able to estimate how much it will be safe to make a deal with him.

It will be awesome if we could buy food directly by our etherium or bitcoin or maybe other crypto so at least we can safe our sending fee and also withdrawal fee but in my country its not possible to buy food directly with crypto because crypto is forbid to use to pay something.

Yes, this is what Dether does. Recently, the first dapp version for business was launched. Almost every offline business in any country can be listed on Dether map and soon receive crypto directly for its services and goods and also be a crypto-cash exchange, what can serve as an additional income. These can be food stores, fast food, cafes and any other businesses. But I really can't know how things can be with this in your country, because I don't know what country you are talking about :)

Hey, thanks for sharing your opinion. Btw, the main Dether message sounds like this “Buy and sell crypto for cash. Spend it at physical stores”. That is, on one Dether world map will be all. A very ecosystemly ecosystem, as I call it. So, if you would like to spend your crypto in your favorite places in your city, but they don’t yet accept it - just show them Dether dapp http://shop.dether.io ;) While this is only the first beta release exactly for Business, which allows to list any shops on Dether map, but soon it’s will be possible accept payment for crypto for their goods and services, as well as to make a crypto-cash exchange, which can become an additional income for the business :)

Wow, these are unacceptable fee :o Well, I'm sure that the future is behind decentralized p2p exchanges.

Thank you for sharing. Tell me please if you can, what kind of fee in such exchange office and what country are you talking about? :)

I do. Sometimes when I need money and do not have enough, I liquidate some of my coins and convert it into cash so I can use it because as much as we would like it to be so, there are still a lot of things that cannot be purchased with crypto and you have to use cash. I only sell to people I trust though and I have never bought crypto with cash, I just use exchanges to buy

Even if I need money so badly I don't even thinking of selling those crypto assets I have, because the probability of gaining my crypto price value will be higher in the future. Somehow I was able to survive most of the time and nearly one year my asset was still on roller coaster ride changing its value from time to time. If that cash turns out as paper money then I have no other options but to spend it, due to fiat investments doesn't seem to be profitable anymore rather than cypto investments.

Of course, I do. Selling crypto and spending the money is very good feeling. I am investing about half of my earnings, but the rest is for me.

There are not a lot of trades like that in my country, most people prefer to sell their bitcoin or to buy bitcoin with a credit card, older people have a tendency to use cash instead of digital money, but most people that are getting into bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are younger and they prefer to use electronic means of payments instead of cash.

i do it here in my country. I buy directly from friends when i need crypto and they also buy from me when they need crypto. The whole thing is cyclical, a p2p. I enjoy doing that.

In my site there have no way to make cash with cryptocurrency. Some short buyer take BTC or ETH then I make some cash. But big withdraw never possible in my site. It is major issue for me.
yeAH, Cashing crypto into fiat is common. When we need in the real life, fiat is still used and the main currency. I use crypto to buy electric bill or phone bill. IN my country transaction using crypto is prohibited. Buying electic bill is also cahnge into fiat in hte exchanger then pay the electric bill, Not directly from the crypto.

I did not purchase cryptocurrencies because encryption transactions in my country have been completely banned. But if you want to buy there is always a way. But I lack sufficient funds, although I support the encryption market.

If I in need money I sell crypto for cash, and some of my coins is hold for long term. So it is still depends on your budget whether you will buy crypto and sell for a better profit.

The cryptographic exchanges we invest in accept cash. So we buy and sell kiprto money in cash. We are just waiting for these depreciations.

Both. It all depends on the coins and how I see their future. If I understand that there will be no benefit then I sell, or on the contrary, I see the prospect - I buy.

in the country of my residence there are often problems with cashing out the cryptocurrency .. the bank just can block my bank account and ask to declare this money.. there are certainly different ways of cashing out cryptocurrencies but they are not always completely legal.. at the moment I am looking for different alternative ways.

If you mean physical cash then I haven't made any transactions but one of my friends from the same city where I live in bought Bitcoins through localbitcoin website. He told that process wasn't so smooth because of some trust issues.

Recently, I began to pay attention to the possibility of selling the currency for USDT. because this is the equivalent of the dollar and does not change much in price, this is what is the main thing for me to accumulate capital.

I sold my bitcoin and altcoins to my friends and their friends for cash. My friend directly transferred money to my account and I sent him Bitcoins to his blockchain wallet. he referred me to his friends and they bought NEO and ETH from me for hard cash. with friends it is safe but while doing a cash deal with strangers you should be careful.

Man, I also do not do it now, but when I feel I need the money, I sell it for the cash. Naturally, I also buy it for fiat - I do not find anything strange in it. Yes, sometimes, I get the coins when I participate in Bounties.

That is always a problem with face to face trades, you do not know the person that you are meeting and unless the person you are exchanging your money is very trusted it will be very difficult to hand out your cash or your bitcoin, after all if you hand out your cash and the person is someone not to be trusted you are never going to see that cash again and the same is true for your bitcoin.

This looks like a very good project. Often, buying and selling Bitcoin or altcoins for cash is not easy because it's hard to find reliable users. So I think this is the main reason people prefer to use exchanges which look more trusted.

I want to sell at the highest price, hold cash, and then buy it back when the price is lowest. This is the best operation, but it is often difficult. So once the price rises I will hold cash, and if the price falls I will buy it back.

When I required the cash for my personal use I sell some of my coins and get cash for that otherwise I'd like to hold my coins for the long term because I know that we can get very good profit if we hold them for long term.

That is nothing more than the standard strategy of a trader however selling at the very bottom of the price is incredibly difficult, selling close to the bottom is a lot easier, but selling your bitcoin for cash can be very troublesome, this is why many people decide to exchange their bitcoins for tether dollars instead, that way you get the convenience of using a cryptocurrency but with the stability of the dollar.
