Former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker Michael Owen is launching a cryptocurrency in his own name, joining other famous sportsmen including Manny Pacquiao in a new venture to connect with fans.

The retired England star announced Wednesday his investment in the Singapore-based Global Crypto Offering Exchange (GCOX) as he unveiled the “Owen Coin”.

I'm not sure that advertising cryptocurrency celebrities will have any effect. For example, I never buy shampoo, or anything else that celebrities advertise. In my eyes, they are all corrupt people and there is no trust in them. I always am guided by my own thoughts. Cryptocurrencies will be distributed even without advertising.

I believe that their primary reason to ensure a coin is to get involved more with medias but for the investors it would be a win-win situations where people would gain more interest and the market cap would increase.

To a certain extent, yes, I believed that they celebrities endorsing crypto's will somewhat push the market to the next level. We all know how sports fan really follow their idols not just on their career, but as well as outside or personal life. So sportmen are somewhat influential and the likes of Owen and Pacquiao venturing into crypto will be a big boost or can even add to the legitimacy of the market. We have seen, Floyd and other sports of Hollywood celebrities having their own coin or endorsing ICO's and this will be the trend for the next years or so that will really bring crypto's closer to their fans. So it will be another win-win for us.

It's indeed hype at the end of the day, but it doesn't really matter. It's attracting people to this market, and that's the only thing that matters. Personally, I think these celebrities are just riding the wave of the crypto craze to make themselves somehow relevant yet again on the scene, or to make a buzz on their dying careers. So far I haven't seen a single celebrity who really knows what he/she's talking about, and much of them clearly just memorized things off of a script when explaining the benefits of cryptocurrency and what kind of things can it do to help people in their financial status. I would still listen to a relatively unknown person with lots of experiences at hand and a proven track record rather than a celebrity who just reads things off a script and spew nonsense to make his/her advocacy believable.

You are totally missing the point. These celebrities are creating their own Alt coin and this is not helping Bitcoin when people

Since celebrities are well-known in their country and seeing them joining the hype in cryptocurrencies, it will be easier for them to attract investors to help in the success of their own cryptocurrency. I'm sure that they are not just jumping blindly in the world of crypto and just doing anything without prior research. They are backed-up by their own legal advisor/counsel so that they will know what necessary strategies or move they must take in order to achieve their goals. I am not seeing anything different from what is currently happening. I will only be concerned if because of Owen Coin, China allows its ICO to be raised, Facebook makes an exception, Google reverse its decision to ban ads and finally the forum decides to give it some special consideration. Other than that, its going to face the same faith that the entire ICO market is facing but could be mild because of the name involved.

The question, is for those that have endorsed in the past, what is the status of such coins today? I hardly find them in the top 10 coins. I'll one up you and say it is the stupidest idea that these celebrities could think of. They could make money in loads of ways but they are just literally using their name to get riches, makes me sick. Take Pablo Escobar brother for example, do you think Diet Bitcoin stands any chance of being real? I highly doubt it, and if I had to guess I would say it may be used to launder money. Definitely, most people are blinded by the popularity of the endorser.  If someone who is well known endorsed a token or a coin even though there is really no actual use of it, it will have a booster.  Reminds me of some ICO that uses Floyd Mayweather as their endorser and that ICO was sold out easily.

The easiest and cheapest option is to get associated with something that is in news. That is why they are making use of the bitcoin hype and trying to get in news because of bitcoins. Or it must be said, it is dire need of time for the developing team to shed an enormous efforts in field of promotions. How do you expect the market to react to some random soccer player creating his own coins. I don't think all those celebrities are invested into the ICOs, probably some of them are just paid to promote the token/coin. Though, I remember Mayweather was promoting some ICO for a credit card, but when that ICO turned scam, Mayweather quickly deleted the post on his instagram.
