Former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker Michael Owen is launching a cryptocurrency in his own name, joining other famous sportsmen including Manny Pacquiao in a new venture to connect with fans.

The retired England star announced Wednesday his investment in the Singapore-based Global Crypto Offering Exchange (GCOX) as he unveiled the “Owen Coin”.

Could this be a booster to cryptocurrency because these celebrities have big influence world wide and could invariably canvass more support for cryptocurrency.

A lot of celebrities just want to make a hype on this.
They want more popularity, more articles in magazines etc.

Owen isn't exactly a big name and he probably needs the money, when we have celebrities with big fame and wealth endorsing cryptocurrencies instead of making their own that will be a big difference. I believe that Messi has endorsed Sirin Labs, guys like him and especially Ronaldo are the big ones in football/soccer. It would be nice if one of them would endorse bitcoin but that will never happen because they won't be getting paid for it.

This can help into further involved society and individuals to Bitcoin because it is endorsed by known personalities. Maybe they will influence them because they are known and can be trusted. But in this prior matter we heard the news about google banning ads from Bitcoin and also Facebook. With this the population of investors might get lowered down because they might think that Bitcoin's value go down. Also this year is a very hard one for Bitcoin because of continuous negativity as seen from it.

It's a good news indeed, we need this type of news as this is some sort of motivation especially now that the market is bloody red. I believe prior to this there have been other celebrities that endorsed bitcoin. Some of them are:
1. 50 Cent (Rapper)
2. Nas
3. Richard Branson (Virgin Group founder)
4. Ashton Kutcher
5. Katy Perry
6. Floyd Mayweather
7. DJ Khaled
8. Mike Tyson
9. Jamie Foxx

imagine you needed open heart surgery, would you ask a celebrity to operate on you just because he/she is famous?

creating an altcoin as a celebrity is as ridiculous as the example i used here. and that is why the altcoin market is a complete mess these days! everyone who wants free money is joining this market, the lazy ones are just investing (ie throwing their money away by gambling it on altcoins) and less lazy ones are creating a new coin or token... everyone is doing it only to make more money.

Could this be a booster to cryptocurrency because these celebrities have big influence world wide and could invariably canvass more support for cryptocurrency.

no this particular one and the likes of it will only ruin everything for everyone as they fill the market with crap and has already took a dump on the name of cryptocurrencies.

There is a FOMO brewing...

I'm not sure that advertising cryptocurrency celebrities will have any effect. For example, I never buy shampoo, or anything else that celebrities advertise. In my eyes, they are all corrupt people and there is no trust in them. I always am guided by my own thoughts. Cryptocurrencies will be distributed even without advertising.

I believe that their primary reason to ensure a coin is to get involved more with medias but for the investors it would be a win-win situations where people would gain more interest and the market cap would increase.

To a certain extent, yes, I believed that they celebrities endorsing crypto's will somewhat push the market to the next level. We all know how sports fan really follow their idols not just on their career, but as well as outside or personal life. So sportmen are somewhat influential and the likes of Owen and Pacquiao venturing into crypto will be a big boost or can even add to the legitimacy of the market. We have seen, Floyd and other sports of Hollywood celebrities having their own coin or endorsing ICO's and this will be the trend for the next years or so that will really bring crypto's closer to their fans. So it will be another win-win for us.

It's indeed hype at the end of the day, but it doesn't really matter. It's attracting people to this market, and that's the only thing that matters. At some point they will realize how rubbish all these ICO's and shitcoins are, and aim for solidity, quality, security, and that's what Bitcoin offers. Bitcoin is the center of this entire market, and the main benchmark currency.

It's like Gold - people can't afford whole units, but they still want to own a piece of it. Bitcoin's divisibility offers all layers of the society to own a piece of it. Seriously, everyone that I know being involved into altcoin investments/trading, do it for one single purpose, and that's increasing their Bitcoin holdings. They don't give one single shit about altcoins and their gimmick features that no one is really interested it. If the market actually thought Bitcoin was redundant compared to other altcoins, Bitcoin wouldn't be able to grow to where it stands right now.

It is possible to happen that it is made booster to all cryptocurrencies because of these big-time people who brought the name of cryptocurrency and those people who did not know about crypto through Michael Owen that he makes his own currency they fans of this celebrity will engaging soon in crypto, and that bring big impact to bitcoin or other currencies.

Hopefully, there are another celebrities that tossing up bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

Maybe the true reason of why they are getting in here is they want to invest their money in crypto, because aside of their sports they are very active in different businesses, and maybe they have seen a huge opportunity to earn big in cryptocurrency like bitcoin. But of course, because of their popularity and influential to other person, it is very easy to them to promote bitcoin.
