Title: BFL Jally Not Mining
Post by: tacoman71 on November 02, 2013, 04:44:45 PM
I just got my jally a few days ago. I tried hooking it up to bfgminer, but for some reason, it's not hashing. Sometimes, it will hash for a few seconds, then it will just stop. I tried running it on easyminer, but it wont work. Will someone help me? Here's what bfgminer looks like https://www.dropbox.com/s/253lcn9rqcdrq1h/Capture.PNG

Try a different pool and see if you get the same response.  That looks like a potential pool error.

Yeah, BTCGuild has been good to my Little Single so far.  Hashing away since about ten minutes after USPS dropped it off yesterday.

use cgminer much better software

tried btcguild pool and cgminer. Still not hashing. Sometimes it shows this https://www.dropbox.com/s/253lcn9rqcdrq1h/Capture.PNG (https://www.dropbox.com/s/253lcn9rqcdrq1h/Capture.PNG) And apparently i have a 40% hardware error rate and 100% of my nonces are invalid. Did I get a defect?

Has anyone else had this issue?

That's a very strange error.  Have you tried powering off and letting the Jalapeno cool for a bit before repowering it?  I've also seen bad power do weird things to it, maybe a bad PSU source?  The Jalapeno power bricks are pretty reliable though for the most part.

if the above dosnt work try reinstalling the drivers

what does it show up as in device manager?

Whenever I unplug the power and plug it back in after 10 seconds, it mines like normal for about a minute. Then it just stops. When I let it cool down for 10 minutes, it still only mines normally for a minute. I tried reinstalling the drivers, nothing. Instead of plugging it into a power strip I plugged it into the wall directly, still nothing. And for some reason, bfgminer reports abnormally high hash rates like 50 GH/s even when I'm not hashing.

When I try running the windows troubleshooter, it says USB Serial Converter is an older USB device and might not work with USB 3.0

hmmm this is a strange one when you plug it in and it mines does it get accepted shares?
have you tried a standard usb 2 port
is the fan inside the miner working (should be able to hear it easily)

It only gets accepted shares for about a minute, then stops. But the fan is definitely fine. Unfortunately, I don't have a computer with a USB 2.0 port. I tried running bfgminer in ubuntu on Vmware Workstation while limiting USB compatibility within the OS to USB 2.0. Still only produces shares for a minute.

Is it overheating?

Title: Re: BFL Jally Not Mining

sounds like theres something wrong with the actual device. probably the heatsink isnt sitting on the chips and there over heating. 3 options
1.take it apart and re sit the heatsink.
2.send back to BFL
3.find someone local or off here to fix it

or sell it

are you using windows or mac?
could always do remote desktop and see if i can find the problem for you

I have a PC running Windows 8.1. I already tried contacting BFL yesterday but there's no response yet. Probably because it's the weekend.

Is it overheating?

It starts inching up to 37oC then goes down. At this point I'm still getting shares. Then it goes to 42oC and down to 38oC. Then it goes back up to 44oC. After this, it stops getting accepted shares.

sounds like it is over heating... which country are you based in. if its the UK id have a look at it if your willing to ship it and pay for shipping both ways.

it sounds like the heatsink just isnt sat on the chips correctly (is a pretty common fault) so only part of the chip is connecting with the heatsink
so as the chip heats up the system slows down the speed until its cool enough and over time it works out it cant mine without over heating so just sits there idle

I live in Texas. So I just open it up and take out the heatsink and put it back in place? Does opening it up invalidate the warranty?

EDIT: I tried reseating the heatsink but it still spikes at 48 degrees.

opening it up dosnt invalidate the warranty as they need to be maintained. its looking like your going to have to
either
sell it
or RTM it back to butterfly labs.

when you took the heasink off did you notice if there was a pad or any thermal compond between the heatsink and the chip?
also pictures would be useful to help out and rule out as many problems as possible

There was some thermal putty on top of the chips. I tried contacting BFL but they haven't responded. Does anybody want it?

ill happily have it :)

on another note BFL arnt great at support or anything to do with customers
if i get it ill pay shipping to the UK and either give you something for it or stick some hashing power on a pool for you for a month or so

And the constant flow of people like you is what josh and bfl thrieve on. And you keepncomingnin your droves!

No matter how much bad press you put out there's always sheep that will follow! They've trained humans to be excellent consumers even when what younare consuming only has negative effects. This is pandemic in the western world.

So your right, if your notnwise enough to do some research and see this pattern not with just bfl but with the current state of the world, go ahead and buy a monarch! December delivery.... Honestly...... Just two more weeks......

Seriously. There hate for bfl for good reason! Mostly his name is josh (inaba) whos a dirty filthy cockroach!

If you learn anything from me, please make it that you give up on bfl and look into knc or cointerra if your considering hardware. Avoid bfl vaporware like the plaulgue. The monarch ifnit ever does see the day will overheat like a mofo! Its design is aweful proving again, bfl are cowboys!

I'm not here to convince people, I'm here to make people ask questions, as they should do naturally themselves!

Good choice, we get 580gh while it sips around 550w +/-50w and support is excellent. Firmware update fixed one of the modules that didn't work.

Cointerra is also worth looking at, ex head of asic design from Samsung is definitely worth paying attention too!

It starts inching up to 37oC then goes down. At this point I'm still getting shares. Then it goes to 42oC and down to 38oC. Then it goes back up to 44oC. After this, it stops getting accepted shares.

This suggests that you have a USB problem, not a heating problem.

You're running extremely cold, which means you're not hashing.

Is something you're running cranking your CPU to 100%? Like are you trying to CPU mine simultaneously?

Close... This means the chips are faulty. Butterfly labs do not test anything before it leaves. Only the ones they mine with before sending it to the customer of cause. The evidence is on the inspection sticker that is not filled out on there units, just like mine. Just assembly date is filled in. Surprised me they didn't lie and just fill in a test date as well.

You have next to no hope getting a RMA as they just ignore anyone with any type of issue these days as I'm guessing 80% at least is disgruntled customers either other faulty hardware, refund requests and just general annoyance at bfl & josh in particular for being a filthy dirty lieing cockroach who just abuses customers once he has there monies to go swanning around the world on there expense!

He's even planning a meet up this month and I can't believe no one isn't going pay him a visit on this one. Chop this mother fuckers balls off and burn down there fucking building too while there at it seen as its in Kansas.

Filthy whore of a company band its employers, this means Jody and Dave and just about every other misleading asshole that works for these crooks! Everyone who works for them is to blame at this point because they all knew they were never going be ready when theybsaid thy would, and there doing it again with this bullshit monarch. IMPOSSIBLE to cool effectively on that type of card as anyone with any smidgin of knowledge knows is impossible on such a device effectively at the said speeds. What there offering in the monarch is what they offered from the 65nm devices, 1gh for 1w.... They missed this goal by a long long way. At least 6-10 times that. They won't even hit that target with the monarch and there is already companies you can buy off today that will deliver these figures and better today..... For less! Hell, there even announced there next 20nm devices for 2nd q 2014! Nevermind the sub 20's by the end of 2014!

The cooler needed on a monarch will be insane to get any kind of decent outputnout of it. No chance of stacking them side by side. It was ridicules when they announced it and its even more ridicules the way they are still peddling this aweful design!

Bfl and josh are complete losers and still have the attitude as there the only people around still. They livebin a fantasy world! Suppose that's why theybbases themselves in Kansas!!!

P.s- sorry for predictive text and no spaces, mobile

think you need more research they tend to top out at 38c running at full speed
the only other thing it could be is the power brick but its hard to replace or test
there was a guy in computer hardware section selling molex to barrel jacks might be worth checking if he still has them

im still willing to take it off you hands :)
