On not being a typical tourist, truth in advertising, and Italian mothers
I saw an ad on Facebook the other day that got me annoyed. You know, one of those context ads that they show you based on your searches to try and offer you what you personally want (I’d say most of the time they are wrong, though). This one — I will not name it — is a bus company in Peru geared exclusively at Western tourists.

The ad said, “Don’t be a typical tourist”, and that logan seemed to contradict what the company offers. Basically, if you are afraid of taking normal buses in Peru, or feel uncomfortable at local bus stations, or want to be carried straight from your hostel in city A to the hostel in city B, or simply like to be around tons of other backpackers — then you can pay at least double the normal bus price to this company and… not be a typical tourist? Seriously? An expensive bus service for backpackers that connects only those places where most tourists go — sounds exactly like a service for typical tourists to me.

Don’t get me wrong — if people use these buses, if the company has found its market share, then there is nothing wrong with the service itself. At Smart Trip Platform, we welcome all kinds of travel businesses, for all audiences. Would we be happy if this bus company registered? You bet. My issue is with the way it is presented, with the “Don’t be a typical tourist” line. What does it mean NOT to be a typical tourist? And how do you achieve that?

Let me offer you an analogy. You know, I live in Italy (being originally from Russia), and the two cultures are vastly different. One thing that really baffles me is how Italian mothers raise their children, producing perhaps the most infantile youth in Europe. Mothers hardly teach their kids to do anything by themselves when they are little. It is common for a six-year-old to go to first grade without being able to get dressed or undressed without assistance. Kids are not taught how to cook or do any chores around the house, they are not taught to read before school, etc. The result? High school graduates are hardly able to make a dish of pasta. Parents accompany them to all exams. They are simply unprepared to be on their own. But of course, it is mostly their parents’ fault.

Can you already see the gist of my analogy? The environment makes a self-sufficient, mature person — or traveler. Only in the case of travel, most parents can’t teach you much (unless they are die-hard trekkers, sailors or mountaineers). It is the combination of practicing going out of your comfort zone and the tech you use — the digital environment. Unfortunately, getting around truly on your own — NOT being a typical tourist — requires lots of research, confidence, and experience, and the existing web environment is not very helpful. You have to search for info on tons of websites that often contradict each other, you don’t speak the language, then get lost… So on a certain level I can understand backpackers who decide to take the expensive tourist bus. Still I believe that there should be a nurturing, encouraging environment for independent tourists that will help them become real travelers.

If you have followed our recommendations and arrived in Machu Picchu village on foot walking along the tracks, then simply keep following the river to the town center, and soon you will see a ticket booth for the bus that brings tourists to the ruins. When we were last at MP, the ticket price was $11 one way. The alternative is to walk: there is a trail (with a lot of stairs) through the jungle straight to the ruins, which takes about an hour and a half to walk from town. It is steep, and the air is very humid; if you are really, really on a tight budget, then this is a an option, but we advise you to ride the bus up… and walk down after you visit.

Buy your bus ticket (one way) once you arrive in MP village, don’t leave it till next morning! Then have a good rest, perhaps at the hot springs at the northern edge of town (they bring you beer and other drinks straight to the pool!) and go to bed early. Your hotel receptionist might tell you that it’s ok to go out at 4:30 am to take the first bus, which leaves at 5:30: don’t believe it, you will find a huge queue at that time already. Go out at 3:30 or at 4 am the latest. There will already be some snack bars open, so you will get a coffee, and most hotels and guesthouses proved packed breakfast. Once the buses start going, they leave every 5 minutes, so the queue moves rapidly.

If you want to save time and move on the same day (which we advise), then take all your stuff with you (we’ve said it in our previous post, but we’ll repeat: most of your things should remain in Cuzco, Ollantaytambo, or wherever it is that you stay before MP). There is a cheap luggage storage service at the ruins, both before and after the ticket control.

When visiting Machu Picchu, you have a choice between several types of tickets: just the site, the site plus Huayna Picchu (the iconic mountain you see in all the photos), and the site plus Machu Picchu Mountain — it’s a much higher mountain on the other side of the ruins, in the direction of the Sun Gate, where the Inca Trail ends. If you want to climb Huayna Picchu, you absolutely have to buy your ticket in advance, since the number of places each day is limited. However, Huayna Picchu is directly above the ruins, so the view is actually not that tremendous; plus, you cannot see the fantastic mountain itself, of course. Machu Picchu Mountain is a better choice, though the hike is longer (there are stairs all the way, but you still need to be in reasonable shape). Take collapsible hiking poles and hide them in your backpack until you are on the trail.

Machu Picchu Mountain can be hiked in two shifts. Till 10 am it is usually completely covered in mist, so it is better that you climb in the second shift and prepare to wait. To make sure you don’t waste any time, see as much of the site before you start climbing. Believe us, it doesn’t take too much time! In fact, the fantastic location and the mystery aside, the actual ruins of Machu Picchu are far less impressive than those at Pisac, Tipon, or Ollantaytambo. There are mostly ruined houses, and if the majestic Huayna Picchu was not there to add drama to the view, the site would lose much of its appeal. It looks fantastic from the Watchman’s Hut and from the mountain, but close up it is… well, go and see for yourself.

Once you have seen the ruins and climbed down from the mountain, there is no reason to linger: get your stuff from the storage, locate the trail to go down (obvious stairs on your left as you exit, heading down into the jungle), and descend. You will not have to pass through the town — that’s why you should have all your stuff with you. Walking down to the railway tracks takes an hour or so. Then you will need to retrace your steps along the tracks to Hidroelectrica, where you will find lots of colectivos waiting for tourists; they start leaving around 2 pm, but don’t believe if the driver says he is leaving “right now”. Buy snacks and water and prepare to wait.

If you started from Cuzco, then it makes sense to only go as far as Ollantaytambo on the way back: this way you can make your way to Cuzco in a couple of days, visiting ruins along the way. -We are working hard on our product(platform) development and we will provide some screenshots of Alpha version soon.
-Some weaknesses are really obvious, like absence of working product, but we are collecting funds for development and work on it in the same time.

When we describe the concept of our platform to outsiders (especially people connected to the travel industry), the same question pops up again and again. Why another travel-booking platform? Aren’t the existing OTAs enough?

It’s true, OTAs (Online Travel Agencies) are everywhere and own huge shares of the market, especially for hotel bookings and plane tickets. In fact, they have overtaken the industry so much that many small travel businesses cannot survive without joining an OTA network. For example, if you have a family hotel, you absolutely have to have a page on Booking.com — otherwise all tourists who stay at other places that are already listed there. If you search on Booking.com and find a hotel for a good price, why would you search for others on Google?

However, OTAs rarely provide truly good conditions for affiliated travel businesses. For instance, a hotel usually pays 20% off each transaction to Booking.com. AirBnB has a different pricing policy: property owners pay 3% (the payment processing fee), while most of the actual cost is transferred to the customer, who pays 5–15% depending on the amount. If a hotel wants to be featured in the Recommended list of properties, than Booking.com fees rise to 35%! As you can imagine, this results in either a severely reduced revenue for the hotel or… correct, in a price increase! Hotels and customers both lose, but the OTA wins.

Things are more complicated in the tours & activities market. You see, no OTA has yet succeeded in overtaking this huge but very, very fragmented market. Just think of it: treks, city tours, wildlife, safaris, cultural excursions, cruises, adventure sports, culinary trips… It’s like a whole world of opportunities, so no wonder that the largest players in the industry (Booking.com, AirBnB, Expedia, and others) are now busy buying startups that work in this market. On the other hand, many companies are developing software for tour & activity providers, to allow them to accept bookings online. Yes, that’s right — over half of businesses in this segment don’t have any online booking system at all!

So how do you book with such a company? Let’s say you want to go on a birdwatching trip in Costa Rica somewhere. Usually you’d need to fill in a booking request, after which the company will send you an invoice and an agreement. You need to print out the agreement, sign it, scan it, send it back to the company and pay your deposit via a bank transfer. If you don’t live in Europe or the US, then the transfer can take a week or even more. This is very frustrating business, but unfortunately such travel service providers don’t really have anywhere to turn. A convenient aggregator platform hasn’t been created for them yet.

Smart Trip Platform aims to solve both issues: high fees charged by existing OTAs and the absence of a good resource for more niche travel providers. What we are building isn’t an aggregator, however — quite the contrary. An aggregator (a classic OTA model) is a highly centralized system where travel businesses aren’t allowed to communicate with customers until a transaction is made. Think of Booking.com: their hotel pages don’t include email addresses or phone numbers. Only once you book, you get a phone number in an email. AirBnB does allow you to exchange phone numbers once you’ve paid the booking deposit, but before that you have to use the “contact the host” form on their site.

We are proposing a radically different model. On Smart Trip Platform, travel businesses and their clients will be able to communicate directly via chats and chatrooms, negotiating prices freely. The trick is that transaction costs on our platform will be much lower than what they can get outside of the platform. This way, there will be absolutely no reason for them to try and arrange a booking in some other way. Since Smart Trip Platform is decentralized and will run on a carefully chosen distributed ledger, our operational costs will be minimal.

The first version of an app   "the alpha"  needs to be functional, but it doesn’t have to be sleek, beautifully designed, or full of features. The Smart Trip Platform alpha is already in the works and it will have essential features such as: Signup and user area, Wallet, Chats, Booking tools, Reviews, Rating points for users. . .

Of course, the alpha release is only the first step on the way to the fully functioning, global platform that we are envisioning. We hope to be done with the alpha by mid-autumn, but we’ll be working on the beta at the same time. Perhaps we’ll even be able to release it by Christmas!

We want to give our users to pay the way they like, but we also want to motivate them to use TASH. So we’ll make sure that paying for travel services with tokens will always give benefits compared to paying with a credit or debit card. The price of a hotel room or excursion in TASH will always be just a little bit lower, and the fee for a travel business will be lower, too. This way, both travelers and businesses will gain an advantage. Besides, the only way to earn a cash-back reward on purchases made with our TripCards will be to use tokens on your account.

This sounds very nice, cash-back for trips, good way to attract people, along with cheaper prices for the whole trip. You will need a huge network, this project needs to be huge, how else to connect all travel services on one platform. It can make things much easier I understand that, hard part will be in realization of this idea. Reaching soft cap is first great step, it will be very interesting to watch further progress of this projects cause it can be really huge!

One of the key features of the Smart Trip Platform will be its chatrooms - group chats dedicated to different cities, countries, specific attractions and national parks, or events. Users will be able to create their own chatrooms and act as their moderators.
We will also have a rating system - Private users can earn likes by posting valuable and correct information about attractions, transportation, and so on, by writing reviews, or fulfilling small requests posted by other users. Just one suggestion, you should add PADI diving centres to platform. I have tough times to find partners for diving, and it's forbidden to go alone on deep dive. If it's possible to find random partners before going on diving destinations that would save a lot of time and money!

Like always here on forum people wish something and they wish that now! Who will bother to wait platform, presentations, contracts, marketing, and so many other things. This is only the beginning probably, if they achieve everything they wrote in road map this thing can be huge, but for now its just great idea that needs a lot of work. New tokens flooded the market, its hard for every new ico to find investors that hold investment for years, and not chase fast profit. Beginnings are always hard, we need to wait alpha version, in road map its clearly stated : `Q2 2018 Pre-sale, work on the demo version of the platform` we can hope that they will deliver that platform soon and what is that all about.

I read the article, and I like it. It's good idea to approach car rentals and smaller cruise tours. That are small businesses everywhere so it will be easy to lean them towards cryptocurrency. And car rental with crypto and reserving it on the platform, thats just make everything easy.
