Currently having good results with a mixture of:

42 ... but should have gotten into 42 during it's initial run up, that seems to be fizzling out now; it's value seems to be consistently dropping on Cryptsy

KittehCoin seems to be good at the moment at a loff diff of 1.67 so I'll be mining that.

I've set my 1st rig to Kittehcoin and still using my shared rig to mine WDC which still seems to be the most forward thinking alt-coin at the moment!

Not sure what the long game plan is, to keep WDC or to get those WDC into BTC eventually?

It's only been recently launched and a lot of features are still in development.
But it's already grabbing the attention of some bigger players.

You guys should check out USDe.. it is brand new only six days old therefore people joining now would be part of the early adopters. Also, the community is a good one and supportive. USDe has so much growth potential and it is not even a week old!

I could NOT find a real reason for the popularity of Dogecoin yet. For me this coin is not more interesting than the original Bitcoin or Litecoin on which Dogecoin is based on. In my opinion Dogecoin is just a boring copy of Litecoin with a new name. >:(

Maybe the only reason for the popularity of Dogecoin was the extreme high reward for early miners, that will drop down in the future ("As of January 13, 2014, 28% of the 100 billion total dogecoins have been mined." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogecoin ).

And these early miners and traders who already hold in total more than 28% of the coins that will ever be mined are interested in an increasing price of the Dogecoins. I think this is the only reason why the Dogecoin is pushed and promoted everywhere in a non-technically (missing innovation) and just enthusiastic way.  ;)

LTC, in my honest opinion. People are going towards LTC rapidly since difficulty is one-fourth compared to BTC.

You cannot compare the difficulty of Litecoin with Bitcoin because Litecoin is SCRYPT-based and cannot be mined with special mining hardware yet.

Litecoin: no special mining hardware => lower hashrate => lower difficulty

i am absolutely new to this but from a "outsider" perspective the most appealing coins (except for bitcion) for me were litecoin, feathercoin, peercoin and devcoin. they don't have to be most profitable, but all of them gave pretty solid arguments to why is their coin a good idea and i just like their idea. if i follow the logic "by me i judge you" i guess more newbies would like these coins also :D

TRANSPARENCY / TRUSTWORTHY:
1. Are the full specifications easy to find on bitcointalk.de or on a website of this coin?
2. Is the source code available for this coin?
3. Does a website exist? Is the website online? Is the URL of the website changing very often? Are the full specifications easy to find on the website?
4. Is there a hint that the coin is NOT PREMINED or a special hint of the premine-percentage! (If there are many entries in the blockchain that are older than the official release date of the coin, then you should be suspicious!)


TECHNICAL RELIABILITY:
1. any damaged or forked blockchains in the past?
2. If a critical bug appeared: Did the author offer a mandatory update very soon to fix it?
3. Is the coin available on several exchanges?
4. Did an exchange remove this coin because of technical issues?
5. Is the source code actively maintained? When was the last update?


INNOVATIONS:
1. Does the coin or the wallet offer some interesting innovations?
For expample:
1.1. Proof-of-Stake (POS) (for example: peercoin, novacoin, yacoin, philosopherstone, diamond)
1.2. possibility to add a transaction message to a transaction (for example: Florincoin, philosopherstone)
1.3. random blocks (for example: Luckycoin, philosopherstone)


I know it is some work to go through this checklist for each coin to find the right coin for you. But it might be worth it.

Its the coin that hasn't been released yet. A so called US government coin, IRScoin, built in protocol that takes 40% away if you don't play by the rules. Don't count out Bank of Americacoin or Chinese government coin either. For right now,and I know some may disagree but you want to buy a coin that is cheap now but should jump in the future, that to me is Worldcoin, going to have a monster February once people realize that trading coins back into your bank account at 30seconds is better than 1 hour+ from Coinbase. .35 cent WDC is just unreal.

Thanks for your reply but I would call the number of total mineable coins a specification item because it is just changing a number in the Litecoin source code.
A real innovation is something like a new feature in my point of view.
The solution for the problem you mentioned would be switching to a lower dimension Altcoin -> milli-altcoin -> µ-altcoin. Then it would be easier to handle for most people (right many 0.00000xxx are difficult to handle).

All launched coins follow the same pattern, constant drop after the initial launch. DOGE as recovered from its low, so it is well positioned to stay alive for a time (I wasn't a believer until this weekend). Moreover, a very healthy number of people are mining DOGE. On contrary to most other alt, the hashrate is rising. I will keep 25% of the Doge I mine from now on in case.

In my opinion, alt coins will not perform well bitcoin long term.  Bitcoin is first coin and winner coin.  Other coins popular for, what they say in Uzbekistan "pump and dump."

But, being said that, the best alt coin if you MUST is DOGE.  Reasonings:

- The mascot is cute
- Good to support because it not serious and makes other alt coins seem not serious.

Dogecoin seems to have proved everyone wrong, Mooncoin seems to have come back from the dead. Any coin needs to be on an exchange in order for anyone to be able to judge whether it is worth anything (otherwise you are mining blind and this is OK for a speculative couple of hours, but not practical in the longer term).

Digibyte seems interesting, a good team behind it, a sensible launch and a decent mining rate so far. Needs to make it to a decent exchange and it may go far (providing everyone doesn't just dump their coins).

Worldcoin is nearing a pivotal moment, if Scharmbeck offers decent merchant services so companies can easily accept Worldcoin and have USD entering their accounts automatically through it, this could place Worldcoin at the front of the pack. However, being Worldcoin it then needs to quickly get other currencies on board so that UK businesses can get GBP etc.

I completely agree, recently doge rose from 0.2$ per 1k doge to 0.7$ per 1k doge, you can't say it isn't profitable :)

Nxt has a weird interface, to become more popular it will have to become more user friendly.

In Uzbekistan they do not care second, third, next generation coin.  The call how they say pump and dump.

Only first generation (BTC) and doge generation (DOGE) are care.

Dogecoin 100% hottest, I'm also Mining QQCoin on a secondary rig - its grwoing quickly and has a good exchange rate w. some of the other altcoins.

I started with Litecoin but that just got too hard after a couple of coins so tried various CPU coins (quark, secure etc).

Not making a great deal of headway with any of them but enjoying the ride :)

The hotest alt coin right now has got to be Doge.  Dogeroad is up, albet mostly empty, and its infrastructure is coming a long well.  Doge-dice alone gives this coin an advantage over all the others.  Yes, there are going to be 100 billion of them, but it looks like it may be in for the long haul along with LTC.

First post here, long time lurker.  About to get into the mining thing soon, after trading for a little while.  My last binge of alt-coin research landed me on 42 and MNC.  I also like TAG for the very long run (kinda like 42).  Depends on the strategy though, but for buy and hold, I like 42 and TAG.  But man, for short to medium holds, MNC is shaping up to be fun this year!

In terms of which coin is the hottest, I think doge is the clear winner just because the hype around it is blowing up at a crazy rate. The difficulty is so crazy now though that it is tough to get through mining, I think the hash rate is something like 60% of the hash rate going to litecoin. So from a mining perspective I'm having fun with the newer coins like USD-e and Noblecoin. It's nice hitting those blocks all the time and the exchange rates are surprisingly good at this point.

Honestly I'd say nextcoin and NEM to be the hotest atm. Although that can change quite fast.

Hottest to me means which coin will have the highest %rise in the near future. People say innovation is very important but the market tells a different story. People like Dogs and Cats. Hottest coin Kittehcoin, new relaunch+ block halving+ more marketable+China+ Max Keiser. Expect huge gains in the near future.

Protoshares as they will be honored as Bitshares if all goes well on Feb 28.  Finally something besides just another coin!

Unfortunately, I don't believe  NXT will  stay the course because of the crazy distribution of shares right at the beginning,this alone will put off big mainstream investors,they will want in early as well and they are the ones who will make a coin successful. Mintcoin crashed to half it's value today. Mazacoin went up 500% today, then crashed down to half of that and is still falling. Anyone investing this morning has a smile tonight I'm sure. Aurora does indeed look promising, but it's very hard to say whether it's rise will last.

Mintcoin is still overpriced I believe, Blackcoin seems to be more promising because the mining is almost over, and they have waaaaaaaaaaaaay less coins, so I purchased it instead and waiting when it will hit bigger exchanges and PoW phase will be over.

Darkcoin seems to be great investment at the moment, the Darksend is already alpha testing and will be released to public this weekend as far as I know, so the price will skyrocket. Also, unlike most of other coins, this one has something special, not only hype - there allways will be demand for anonymous transactions.

Huntercoin seems to be another hit, it's almost listed at Cryptsy, deposits page exists but is hidden yet. Improved client is coming, and the idea of combining multiplayer game with coin is fantastic, so I believe HUC has a bright future.

Also, NXT price was dropped a bit, so I purchased more of it. Assets Exchange is almost ready, and I believe that price will grow dramatically soon. Just look at those buy walls!

I would advice you not to follow the hype as regards what is hot or what is not hot. Its best if you can take some time to research on what you can invest in and hold it for the long term rather than trying to make quick bucks. There are quite a good number of altcoins on the top list right now. As a matter of fact, a lot of them are doing well for themselves and I think it is hard to single one out and call it the hottest altcoin. A good number of the top listed altcoins are taking control of the industry right now, despite the recent market trends. I like what's going on with Monero and NEo anyways.

I see recently ended of the scavo ico.this project is really good & many people's invested on scavo project.  so my opinion is "scavo" is the hottest altcoin now.

I think you can see it on the coinmarketcap list, but for now Bitcoin cash (BCH) because the reason for this is that hard forks most often produce free tokens for those who hold their respective cryptocurrency at the fork - the same as the Bitcoin holder accepts BCH equivalent token when Bitcoin Cash was aired last year.
