That would be cool and great for the bitcoin community, but I am not sure if they worded their response correctly to you.   I heard that they were in the process of creating their own platform for virtual currencies only to be used on Amazon, but not bitcoin specifically.  I am hoping that I am wrong...

I think it's only a matter of time before Amazon begins accepting Bitcoin.

They're not going to just sit around and be out-competed by overstock.com.

Your Name: Alex Myers
Comments:Hello,
I was wondering if Amazon.com would be willing to accept bitcoins as payment for merchandise on their site. Since I have quite a few bitcoins that I would like to spend and there aren't many major websites that accept bitcoins, I would like to ask if there would be any chance of you begining to accept bitcoins in the future so I can spend my stash.
One of the reasons I prefer bitcoins over cash is because they are much more secure and there is no chance of having my personal information stolen, like what happened at Target recently for millions of customers. This would give me some peace of mind. Also, the transaction costs associated with bitcoin are almost 0% compared to the 2.5%~ cost that credit cards charge.
Would you be willing to begin accepting bitcoins on your website? Companies like Bitpay and Coinbase make it very easy to accept bitcoins and then transfer those bitcoins instantly over to cash for almost free. I would appreciate it if you would give me this payment option.
Let me know what you think - Alex Myers

I opened up my email today and saw a response from Amazon.

Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

We don't accept bitcoins as a payment method on our website at this time. However, I am pleased to inform you that we are in the process of creating our own bitcoin payment processor and will be able to begin accepting this method of payment in the near future on Amazon.com.

In the meantime, we accept credit cards, debit cards, payment from U.S. checking accounts, Amazon.com Gift Cards, Amazon Payments Stored Balance, and the Amazon.com Store Card. Here are the credit cards we accept:

-- American Express
-- Diner's Club (U.S. billing addresses only)
-- Discover
-- MasterCard
-- Visa, Visa Electron, and Visa Check Cards
-- Eurocard
-- JCB
-- NYCE
-- STAR
-- China UnionPay (credit card only)

You can learn more about these payment methods on our Help pages:

Thank you for your suggestion to accept bit coins as a payment method.

Customer feedback like yours is very important in helping us continue to improve our website and services. I appreciate your thoughts.

If Amazon is serious, it makes sense for them to create their own payment proccessor as it would cut out the middle man fees from BitPay or CoinBase.

Pretty sure that a regular customer service rep doesn't get the memos on what is currently being developed / implemented. And if Amazon was going to add Bitcoin-payments, they'll sure as hell make an official announcement to grab the media attention rather than let the news just be casually mentioned by CS.

I say fake.

Amazon may be working on Bitcoin or they may not be, but I don't consider this message trustworthy.

"we are in the process of ..." could mean anything. e.g. "some of our geeky nerds look into this and poke in their nose while reading funny emails like yours"

don't forget, that amazon has its overall goal to never do something which makes customers unhappy. even if that means that they lose money with you or have to make up some half-baked story, etc.

I can just see the meeting of Amazon execs now...

"So, we've been working on retooling our website to accept bitcoins as a payment method for a while now. It should be ready soon. How should we let the public know about this? A press release? A big banner on our website? A series of TV commercials? No, let's just tell to some random asshole who e-mailed our support center and let me spread the word to everyone else. Yeah, that's what we'll do."

I'm not sure if the e-mail would be fake or not, but even if the OP received that specific e-mail word for word, it's still phrased in a way that might not mean what we all hope it means.

In other words, if it's indeed real and the Amazon rep is in the know, then it's possible that Amazon might be developing their own coin/currency/whatever.

Either way, I'm still hopeful that they'll accept it one day!

amazon are making a amazon coin. this is not a blockchain/crypto coin. it is more like microsoft points/facebook credits/itunes credit. as such these coins do not magically appear, people have to purchase them. and amazon would at first open it upto credit/debitcards and then using bitcoin to purchase their amazon balance. much the same way that facebook has its own 'credits' to use within facebook, but they too are going to allow bitcoins to be used to purchase facebook credits in the near future.

its only time until bitcoin becomes as popular as credit cards, when it comes to online purchases

Also, no way would they rather tell people on a email than a news report. I'm not going to continue to explain why this is fake because;

Q: What's one common reason that people post fake news stories (good or bad) with financial implications on public forums?
A: To attempt to incite other people in trading in a way that financially benefits the poster.

Q: What kind of person benefits from the type of buying that good news can generate?
A: Somebody who wants to sell.

Did anyone else do the Harlem shake to this one? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQN3PIF4d5o)

in other news - Target has "targeted" me and my e-gift card.  they first said, NO, WE WONT TAkE ANY GC that isnt purchased nor saved in the official TARGET APP.  The lady proceeds to make me download their POS app which doesnt work, and I still cannot use my e-gift card, purchased with bitcoin from Gyft.  This is the first time that's ever happened to me but they basically have me pigeonholded with a useless giftcard.  I'm now talking to gyft about getting a refund as their client is refusing to allow me to use it.  I've used target giftcards on my phone before at other ones - why the mess up all of the sudden.

Publically traded companies have certain requirements on how information that could effect the companies stock price is released. Something like this would be released in an official press release for "everyone" to learn about at the same time.

Really? "FAKE" in the topic title didn't give it away?

1. Get a customer support mail about anything from amazon.
2. Use web designer tools in your browser to change the content of the mail.
3. Write whatever you bloody want.
4. Screenshot it, upload to bitcointalk.
5. Make people believe it.
6. ???
7. Profit.

Is this true?
Atleast the link is broken, I'm skeptical.
Found nothing when I -googled- it either.

I sent this email to Amazon's customer support on Jan 19th. This was my message. It was a little crude but I was in a hurry and didn't expect to get a response back.

You can learn more about these payment methods on our Help pages:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/?nodeId=513058

Thank you for your suggestion to accept bit coins as a payment method.

Customer feedback like yours is very important in helping us continue to improve our website and services. I appreciate your thoughts.

We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Best regards,
Hariprasath S.
