Title: FAIRBRIX - Announcement - CPU friendly - GPU hostile - Tiny premine
Post by: michaelmclees on October 01, 2011, 09:36:57 PM
Don't download or mine with the current client.

An error in the config file has caused all blocks past 100 mined to generate 0 coins.

Please wait for further notice so proper code can be released.

Announcing a new alternative cryptocurrency - Fairbrix

First, many thanks to Lolcust, EskimoBob, and ArtForz for helping me out with this.

About this new currency...

This chain is much like Tenebrix, which is difficult to mine with GPU's.  The major difference is, this chain has no loaded Genesis block.  I have mined a few blocks along with EskimoBob, to verify the system works.

The following link will take you to a zip download for Windows.

removed

The source will be forthcoming, so if you're not comfortable using this until it is open for all to see on GitHub, you'll only need to wait a bit.

Update - 10-2-11 - A new client has been launched that solved the initial problems.  Please see this thread for details.  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=46528.0 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=46528.0)

For Windows users, you can get the new client here...  http://www.mediafire.com/?9gc28oo1s00lhhz (http://www.mediafire.com/?9gc28oo1s00lhhz)

If you like to compile your own, code is here:  https://github.com/EskimoBob/Fairbrix

For now, get the code:  http://www.mediafire.com/?h55yd3972y5qvqd
And use the Tenebrix miner with a proper port

Someone will set up the git sooner or later.

Im getting something like this on 1 thread CPU mining and only hashes and speed on 2 threads.

Is it working or I did something wrong? So far no block generated i think.

Ideally this'll compile on linux...

Congratulations!

You might just have created the best CryptoCurrency yet.

I'm convinced of the merit of the CPU friendly approach for encouraging wide/faster adoption and appreciate the value of removing the 7 million coin 'overhang' of Tenebrix.

However, superior solutions without momentum fail all the time. Not sure how to kickstart a cryptocurrency, but I'm sure it involves lots of hustling.

Nevermind, there isn't even a makefile for linux.

Correction:  Four most recent blocks found give 0.00 coins.

Are you running win client or linux? I'm running linux client and I'm generating 0 coins in each block found.

Post by: Bobnova on October 01, 2011, 10:43:47 PM
Further correction:  All blocks mined since 3:13PM pacific time are listed as zero coins.
First zero coiner is one confirmation away from being confirmed, we'll see what it does.

Running windows client on linux here.  First two blocks gave coins, further ones have not.

First 0coin block has 161 confirms but isn't listed as confirmed.  How many does this take?

Lolcust is probably laughing his ass off here.

he is the one who cooked up this bowl  :)

get the code:  http://www.mediafire.com/?h55yd3972y5qvqd
And use the Tenebrix miner with a proper port

Title: Re: FAIRBRIX - Announcement - CPU friendly - GPU hostile - Tiny premine
Post by: Bobnova on October 01, 2011, 10:54:43 PM
Code has no linux makefile, makes it hard to compile in linux.

EDIT:
Also, him cooking it is why he's laughing if everybody is generating zero coin blocks.
It's certainly something I'd consider doing to a competitor who asked me to help make competition for myself.

get the zip,
cd src/
qmake
make

Do your "0 coin" blocks have the coins now, after 150 confirmations?

Same thing here. I'm new to mining. Not sure if it is an error or what's going on with it.

At what block are we?
My client says "667"...

Try using the other batch file to mine.

There is a problem with the code so you may want to hold off for a bit.

720 is the current block per my client.
No blocks since the first maybe 150 or so actually have coins in them as far as I can tell.

May have been a good idea to premine further after all!  There's some irony for you.

EDIT:
Sidenote:  The client (not the miner!) is eating a tremendous amount of CPU power on linux, is there a miner built in or something?  When I say tremendous, I mean literally every cycle it can get it's hands on.

Well I have mined a few blocks so far and I only got one bloc with 25 coins. The rest of them have 0.00 value and even after 300 - 400 confirmations their balance is still 0 and its says "Mined balance will be available after 0 more blocks"

Using 2thread batch file - dont show that "error" ? But mined blocks have 0. The one block that contained 25 coins was created at 100 block counts (628 blocks back) and on 1 thred batch file which "shows error? "

There is already one tenebrix, now another fairbrix, I thought Solidcoin came out first with the idea of CPU mining?  When they come out there will be 3 CPU coin mining.

Not sure fairbrix counts, there appear to be only ~4k coins in existence, despite 787 blocks.

Hmm, reminds me of this:

Failbrix?

Found 12 blocks, it says "12 transactions" but I didn't get any coins... Now the transactions dissapeared but it still says "12 transactions" on the "main" screen.

I'm out of here, back to Tenebrix  ;D

thanks

I have just downloaded the client zip pack. Unzipped run client run miner and .. they are working. On 1 miner thread there is I dont know some kind of error? but im not sure.
" "error"="null" "
Im not in to a software programming but my mind says error = null means no error?
Either way block are calculating but only in one block i got 25 coins the rest is 0.

Unfortunately this launch was a false start. There was a problem in the config causing all blocks mined after the 100th blocks to contain 0 coins. The fix would unfortunately require a restart of the coin.

michaelmclees has asked me over IRC to take over for him. I will try to do my best. I will set up a new github.com repository with the source so people can do diffs. And generate a new genesis block. I will premine a few to make sure things work ok. Apparently, that was really needed. When everything is looking good, I will post the client and the source.

In the meantime, please stop your clients and miners and switch back to tenebrix. :)

We don't need a restart, the coin just decided it doesn't want to live anymore...

We have Tenebrix, it works great, support is better than every other alt-chain (also for GG!), there's a pool and an exchange and enough pre-mined for bounties and laundry.

Fairbrix decided to die, don't be Frankenstein...

I made sure that the custom inflation (aka make magkal blocks with arbitrary coinage) is off in the config (custom_inflation=0) and set subsidy to "allways 25" (Subsidy=25), wtf did go wrong ?

infaltion_trigger=(current block nucmber)+ 5 blocks

post_Subsidly=25

So, comment out, or delete, those lines!

I'm still working on a relaunch. The source is here: https://github.com/coblee/Fairbrix
It's not fully working yet. But I'm going to make it such that you don't need a conf file.

I would not suggest mucking around with your fairbrix.conf file to try to generate coins for the original chain. This would just make people fork different chains and create a huge mess.

Simply removing the
Code:
custom_inflation=0
line in the config is enough to restore expected behaviour.

No need for a re-launch.

The code was changed from the multicoin defaults by someone, in the orginal multicoin the default block when not set is MAX_INT,  someone made it 100 in this fork.   Why I have not idea, they should have put it in the config file probably instead of putting it in the code.

You still need a relaunch, or you need to use the multi step innflation trigger code that is in multicoin to add rules to keep the 0 coin blocks valid.  For some reasons this code also removed that though.

Anyway,  give the skill sets and the fact only 100 blocks matter with coins in them anyway, a relaunch is really the best idea here.

That's not what I observed. Coined blocks built on top of the existing chain.

I haven't mined every block, and have mined several orphans. I can't say for definite, but I guess that some blocks have coins & some don't. The only problem would be someone trying to spend the 0 coins - or it would be a problem if the unexpected outcome was some coins but not 25 per block.

We are now at 2000 blocks, so 25% of the chain is after I started finding coins again. Won't be long before it's the majority. Why not just go with it?

I'm not precious about this, it just seems that one "#" is way less problematic than a re-write, no?

Forget the chain form first launch attempt. I was mining  it all night but what can I say, shitt happens and now I am back to 0.
Get the new client etc and start your mining.

Since that would then make the 0 coin blocks invalid blocks, it is a block forking change, so a relaunch is needed.

Did you observe that though?  Or did you just make that change and keep your already downloaded blocks data file.  Delete your blocks file and try again, remember they are not re-validated every time you restart the client. So unless you deleted your already existing block files you did not observe what you thought you did as far as what a fresh client or a re validation of the whole chain would see.

Fair point. Didn't revalidate blocks.

As relaunched fairbrix has just orphaned the last 1200 blocks, I'll resurrect original fairbrix & check! Assuming there's at least one other ofb peer out there.

Connected to 2 peers, downloading chain. 4 blocks have gone to "generate".

Can't know, of course, whether these 2 peers made the "remove custom_inflation" change or not.

Yeah,  getting to be too many variables with fairbrix already.   How many blocks of the chain did you download?

It got to 1886 (four were mine!), and sat there for ages. Then ticked over to 1887. So I guess there's still someone mining.

and before you said you were at over 2000?   Would be interesting to see just what the blockchain looks like now..  but not not enough  so for me to want to try and set up abe for the chain.   I think with the issues with the relaunch I am sticking with tenebrix for cpu mining for now.

Yes it would & yes, not enough!

When I re-downloaded the chain, all the zero blocks up to 1720 were validated by my client with "custom_inflation" removed, then my generated's from 1720 up to 1886 were confirmed, plus the immature ones waiting for the block count to increase.

Does this mean that, if people had just made that config change everything would have continued as planned?

Ironic that the relaunched chain suffered the bigger fork! As ArtForz pointed out in anther thread, it doesn't take much of a botnet to eat a cpu mined chain.

While I was typing this, the count has gone up to 2070, and my balance has increased accordingly.

The clients should all have to agree on how many coins are in a block to validate them.  This is what prevents someone from mining 5000 coins a block for themselves.  Either the validation code in fairbrix is bugged or zero coins is treated differently.   It should not be working like you are seeing, but since it is doing that either due to a bug or a some special logic it should have worked then.  Now what happens if you mine 250 coins a block?  That would see if the bug is only for zero coins.

Ah,   someone just said on irc that is looks like someone also forked the original fairbrix chain, that may explain what we are seeing... they fixed that issue then forked it.

I'm sure I'm still on the chain I had before I shut down, now with 3 peers. If there was a fork it was before 1720.

I mined till this morning on the relaunched client, there's still a ton of invalidated blocks, but I'm generating new blocks that are staying valid.
Given that I'm getting valid coins and am on the relaunched client, I don't see how it could be a client based fork.

So premining coins for bounties is not okay, but wrestling them from legitimate miners via overwhelming force is okay?

No offense, but that is a rather peculiar way of looking at things. I'd say, almost cartoonishly communist ;)

It's not ok, but in all fairness, ~35 thousands coins is a lot less than your 7.7 million premined coins.

Method of acquisition matters ;)

Mine did not involve taking what was produced via resources of others

But I was primarily riffing at (hopefully ironic) suggestion that the hacker should use those coins for bounties

It still reads

Eventually it shuts down after 5 minutes

I suppose that you have the daemon up and running and that you have already compiled the miner.

This is my fbx.conf:
Code:
rpcpassword=pass
rpcuser=user
rpcport=8645
#Allow connections from my internal network. Change the address if you have a different subnet.
rpcallowip=192.168.1.*

dns=0
noirc=0

#uncomment this line if UNPNP gives you trouble
noupnp=1

# comment out this line (add # right in the beginning of the line) and / or set to 0 if UNPNP gives you trouble
#unpnp=1

daemon=1
server=1
gen=0
printtoconsole=0
Then I run the miner with
Code:
./minerd --url http://{daemon's IP address - NOT localhost}:8645 --user user --pass pass -s 3 -t 4
Try this way, even if they are on the same machine.

Ok, you can call me stupid. LOL I'm not sure what all that means ... but here's what I did.

1. I have the FBX wallet working.
2. I downloaded the Fairbrix-pack and unzipped
3. I started it by opening the START-MINING MS-DOS BATCH FILE
4. I followed the instructions on the black window that appeared
5. It read "press enter if mining solo" on every input
6. It trys do start but the message reads  "HTTP request failed: couldn't connect to host
and json_rpc_call failed, retry after 30 seconds"

Eventually it shuts down after 5 minutes

I tried my own IP address and it still did the same thing.

I'm not as smart as you, and I appreciate your help.

 :)

Anyone? I need help..... please see above.

Go to the Data\Fbrix_files\ directory in the folder where you unzipped the package.
Edit the fbx.conf file (use notepad to open it) and change the line "daemon=0" to "daemon=1"
Start Fairbrix (with Start_fairbrix.exe in the initial folder)
Start the miner using start_mining.bat and do what you did before.

It will work.

After you make it, you might want to check out some more advanced miners suggested in the original thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=46528.0) or customize the inputs (like setting the threads number to your processor's number of cores minus 1, so that you can have a working desktop while you're mining.

Good luck.

They do. But:

At the current difficulty, if you're mining with 10 KH/s (a fast processor with a few threads) you get a block every 2-3 hours. Then that block would need 150 confirmations to be credited in your wallet. At the current network hash rate, those 150 confirms can take a week or so.

Fairbrix always seems to have a few people mining it at any given moment, I usually see a few connections, seldom more than eight though even with incoming port open.

The nice thing about it is people only seem to be using CPUs still, so just like BBQcoin was last year Fairbrix is one of those coins that people without GPUs can mine effectively.

Evidently so, by the latest Latest Rates file! :)

Which just came out... Right after it comes out is a good time to run around looking for new bargains, as things that people placed for sale in the past become bargains at the new rates...

...And maybe place them for sale at some higher price that will be profit to you when someone notices that changing prices have turned it into a bargain. That way the gradual drift upward in values that seems to be pretty common can serve to profitably drive active trading to make the markets lively.
