The Canaan Creative team have continued to focus on keeping their design modular, and as such their mining units can be arranged into larger units.
Each Avalon 2 units can be run at 100GH and consume ~350W or combined in a 2U rack mountable case that includes a PSU. A external controller is
required for both full systems and individual modules. You can use a modified WR703N router (http://goo.gl/YMHlxw) like in gen 1 Avalons or a Raspberry Pi (http://goo.gl/cKzGXq).

0b) What You Need (top) (#post_contents)
You will need a few accessories and a power supply to get started. I recommend buying the controller directly from Avalon as they will preflash it with the
correct firmware.

1) Powering (top) (#post_contents)
Full units come with two Delta Electronics DPS-500YB-F PSUs (http://goo.gl/ewNegr) that provide a combined 1KW of continuous power at extremely high efficiency. Only one
mains power cable is required as the PSUs are internally bridged. Replacement PSUs combined require 2x24pin ATX, 2x4pin ATX, 2x8 pin PCI-E connectors
and can be purchased here (http://goo.gl/nPDnYe). Individual modules require a typical computer PSU with 1x24 pin ATX, 1x8 pin ATX, 1x8 pin PCI-E connectors.

https://i.imgur.com/AXm1t8k.png
2a) Cooling (top) (#post_contents)
Both the full units and individual modules are cooled using the same fan layout. Each module has its own 80mm Delta GFB0812SHG fan (http://goo.gl/nToIDr) that sucks air
through the sealed heatsink and across the back of the module. These are premium high pressure, expensive fans that utilise two independent rotors.
Cooling is power efficient but noisy and designed with data centres in mind.

At stock, the fan runs at 90% and temperatures reach 53C. Documentation suggests that this sensor temperature should not be allowed to run for long
periods of time above 60C. Dropping the fan to 80% immediately puts us up to 59C. I've tested a mod below to allow individual modules to run silently,
while providing more cooling than the original system. The trades are that it prevents the module fitting in a 2U case, increases the space required and
removes the one directional airflow. At 90%, noise levels are similar to generation 1 Avalons while at around 40-45%, the fan becomes essentially inaudible.

2b) Cooling mod (optional) (top) (#post_contents)
Remove the heatsink shroud by removing two small screws. Place 3x 120mm fans, mid range rpm on a fan controller, blowing into the heatsink. Ambient
remained at 25C and test results are provided below. A fan speed of 45% is recommended as we get maximum cooling with the fan remaining silent. You
will need a fan controller and 3x120mm PWM controllable fans (http://goo.gl/q6fnYS) per module to perform the mod.

3) Case (top) (#post_contents)
Avalon2 cases are designed to be 2U rackmountable, or stackable. Individual modules are well protected although the interface PCBs are exposed.

5) Troubleshooting

ProblemSolution
What temperatures should I aim for?- Try to achieve <60C for long lifetimes. Temperatures should not be let to rise above 65C.
How can I tell what firmware version I have now?- Navigate to System -> Cgminer API Log and look at "Firmware Version".
Where.can.I.find.the.latest.firmware.for.the.WR703N?- Download the latest firmware from here (http://goo.gl/cZfrWX) (the WR703N.bin).
Where.can.I.find.the.latest.firmware.for.the.Pi?- Download the latest firmware from here (http://goo.gl/cZfrWX) (the sdcard-vfat-ext4.img).
How do I install the latest firmware?- Download firmware as above. Navigate to System -> Upgrade and click "browse". Select the
downloaded file and click "Flash image". Do NOT interrupt this process or you will brick the unit.

There will very likely be a price drop on these units, but yes, its mainly the chips that aren't competitive.

huh? I would gladly buy a few full units shipped to canada (even without PSU) if the chinese price was shared globally. Why is it 250% as expensive outside of china?

now these units is in final clearance sale now, about ~0.52 BTC for one 105G module.
this price is for China mainland only. for export will remain a 1.3B price.
 :)

That is a terrible business model.  Obviously you're gearing up for Avalon gen 3, why not share that price for the gen 2 globally?

Especially, since Bitmaintech is kicking your teeth in with their almost daily price drops.

so what's the benefit for me to profit the west? will it increase my trust level?  :)

at this price (0.5B for 105G), it can easily ROI in ~50 days. I'm too lazy to do so, but i can change my mine at any time.

The lid is at the bottom of the module on that pic. You only need to remove two screws (or was it one...) that screws from the lid into the heatsink. Remember the module is upside down in that picture compared to the mod picture.

Sorry gotta order the rest of the gear. I ordered this TP Link TL-MR3020.

Tell me again, why can't my regular router work to connect the Avalon 2 to the modem? What is the purpose of having two routers for one modem? Thanks for your knowledge.

I also ordered the other TP-Link router that you recommended in the first post, and I'll send one back. If I have the corsair PSU and the wifi device, I can get this thing working? This is more complicated than my Jalapeno, ha. Having fun though.

This router is going to be loaded with custom firmware which allows it to act as the controller for the Avalon 2, not just as a source of internet. I'm not actually sure if the MR3020 can use the same custom firmware as the WR703N, but I'm guessing not.

i was messing around with my WR703N when i accidentally change the DNS settings into 202.73.37.3...

after the changes was applied.. i can no longer access the web interface...

i can still ping the router... but no web interface.. no SSH...

any idea how can i have my web access back?

or do i need to restore to factory settings? (how to do this?)

and install the latest avalon firmware?

thanks

Google "WR703N reset safe mode" will help you in more detail, but you need to hold down the reset button when you power on the router until it flashes really fast. Then it will default to loading some 'safe' firmware with a known IP.

thought of it and tried... but something is not right with the outcome...

after typing in firstboot... it asked me to confirm that all settings will be deleted... but after keying in "y" is says something is not loaded... (something like jffs2)

been looking for a hard reset... but couldn't find anything...

i have saw 1 post saying that there's a difference between failsafe mode on the factory settings.. and failsafe mode on openwrt...

the 2nd one ill be trying now... just took some sleep cause this thing already took me all day to figure out... lol

ok.. so my bad... the failsafe mode works...

only thing wrong it what i did was.. after restarting.. i did try to find the router again at 192.168.1.1...

but actually.. it was set back to 192.168.0.100...

so all is okay... able to see my miner mining...

then reading some more.. i saw a new firmware for avalon which i ended upgrading mine... and now end up with this problem...

[Firmware Version] => 20140201
cgminer: 698d677
cgminer-openwrt-packages: 7a823a7
luci: 4544a03
Socket connect failed: Connection refused

lol... i should have stayed in my old version... sad thing is i didn't note down what version it was...

any idea what could possibly be the error here?

Check the frequency you set it at, it will only boot at stock and a few different (bad) multiples.

i see.. thanks for taking time to answer me bro...

but got some more question...

my avalon is the knock off from china... and i read somewhere that this version doesn't fit my miner.. and i should be using the 20131123 instead?

is this true?

also... i noticed earlier when i had it running.. it gives to much HW errors...

http://i62.tinypic.com/2128xnq.jpg

sorry if this is too much.. but i got no other person here to ask... =D

also... in the diagnostics... i can only ping the IP.. not the URL... so my solution was to define the IP of the pools in the Hostname..

but seems slash pool has been changing IPs from time to time... i

just for other's reference... incase somebody else's encounter the same issue i have...

1. Upgraded firmware to 20140201
- Won't work on 55nm avalon i think... i reverted back to 20131123.. you can find the bin files here
Code:
http://downloads.qi-hardware.com/people/xiangfu/avalon/

2. Couldn't resolve URL, can only Ping IP
- use 8.8.8.8 as your DNS

3. a lot of rejected work
- i find setting frequency to 1200 keeps me at 0 rejects... will try to play a little more and see if i can find my sweet spot.

for the hardware errors... still couldn't understand why i am getting too much... and how to lower it down if not totally avoid having it...

Will this Corsair PSU work with my single Avalon 2?  It's the CX500 instead of the CX750 which I am sending back.

Just trying to gather all the components for my initial mining set up... just dipping my toes in :)

I have a, supposedly new, Avalon 2 single unit arriving shortly and am looking at obtaining the PSU and TP link WR703N. In your guide you specify that it is a 'modified' TP Link WR703N. Does that refer simply to the custom firmware or does something else have to be done to this unit?

Thanks,

The Avalon1 ran off hardware modded WRs (additional RAM), however I believe the firmware will run fine on stock WRs.

I'm getting really close now. I have CGminer installed and set up, the PSU and Avalon both power on for a brief moment when I plug in the TPLINK 703 router. However CGminer does not find the Avalon. Can't find any USB devices. What am I missing?

When I connect to the TL-wr703n, I do not have the user name and password to access the router controls to check the firmware or the other settings. I try the supposed default which is "root" for username and a variety of "password" or "admin" for password. No luck. Little help here.

CGminer says I'm connected to us1.eclipsemc.com with stratum. Just doesn't find my Avalon.

The Raspberry Pi boots fine when I install the NOOBS distribution as well as when I flash the MinePeon .img map to the SD card. However, the Raspberry Pi fails to fully boot with Dogie's recommended Avalon OS, which seems to be an old release of OPEN-WRT.

I'm a Linux noob but I'm sure that if I can just get Dogie's OS to work in my Raspberry Pi I can get this Avalon 2 to hashing.

Everything is fine, leave it alone to mine now.

Hey Dogie,

this is seminer. I have been trying to set up my btc mining rig for 3 days now. Here is what I am working with:

msi z77A-G45 motherboard (1 ethernet plugin)

4-Avalon 2 single modules (~105 Gh/s)
4-Corsair cx 430 power supply units (psu)
1 TPLINK WR703N router with power, usb, ethernet inputs... ip address sticker reads: 192.168.1.201
1 4-slot usb hub (to connect each usb cable off of the avalon 2

Linux Xubuntu 12.10
BFGMiner 3.2.0. 64bit
cgminer 4.0.0.   64 bit
openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr703n-v1-squashfs-factory.bin

I can not figure out how to set up the wr703N router. I can not connect to it. I type in http://192.168.0.100/ to google chrome browser and firefox browser and I get, "Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to 192.168.0.100"

I can not get to the Openwrt admin login settings. I can not configure the router for mining. I also need to figure out my new terminal command to start the avalon 2 mining. Or, if I set them up to mine, what happens if my pc powers down? I need more details and troubleshooting than this information,  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=493358

I will compensate with useful help. Thank you.

I have no idea why you have a motherboard, its nothing to do with that.

It should be miners -> usb hub -> WR703N with WRT firmware. -> network cable to main router

The address assumes you already have a modified WR, if you don't then go to the default IP of the WR (likely the sticker, 192.168.1.201). Then flash the WRT firmware on. THEN go to 192.168.0.100.

Also remember that when you're trying to talk to different subnets, you'll need to change the subnet of your main router to match. Or, use 3)b) here http://www.dogiecoin.com/bitmain-antminer-s1.html with the last line changing to IP Address: 192.168.x.2, Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway: 192.168.y.y (x being the subnet you want and y.y being the subnet and ip you want to target to reach the WR).

Hey Dogie,

I do not know how to change my subnet on my router. I tried plugging in my ethernet cable from the WR to my desktop. In Ubuntu, I opened Network Connections. I double-clicked auto ethernet. I clicked the Ipv4 settings tab. For the method, I chose manual. I added an "ip address of 192.168.1.2, a netmask of 255.255.255.0, and gateway of 192.168.1.2. I clicked on Require IPV4 addressing for this connection to complete, and then hit save. I tried to go to 192.168.1.201 WR address in google chrome and firefox and could not connect. I tried it by not requiring IPV4 addressing for this connection to complete. I tried it after rebooting my computer. I tried it by reconnecting the ethernet cable to my router. I do not understand how the ip address, subnet, and gatway addresses work. Thanks for trying to help tho.

It was '123'. Now I can log in. I see more than 8 tabs to adjust settings. I also see a tab for cgminer configurations. I do not know how to adjust these settings. I have bfgminer, and I prefer to continue using bfgminer for mining bitcoin with the Avalon 2 units. Do you know how to configure these settings on OpenWrt Overivew LuCI or run bfgminer from the linux terminal with a command after I log in? Thank you.

I tried root for the password too and it did not work. Where can I find the password for my tplink tl-wr703n router? Do I have to do a reset? Thank you.

Try password, admin, root and nothing. Or google, this information is out there.

Thank you.

I thought you meant the emergency WRT page. Nevermind.

Just enter your pool information into the cgminer page, that's all you have to do. No, you can't use BFGminer within WRT.

Hi Dogie... is it normal to have 50% Discarded shares? (avalon2 with wrt703n latest firm. mining on ghash.io)
actualy should I care about these shares ? do they reflect on earnings ?
No its not normal, you may have set a clock speed that doesn't run properly. I found anything but default just created an exact amount of discarded shares.

No problem. If its the same as what I was seeing when OCing, its a software problem rather than hardware and doesn't actually impact hash rate. Still not great though.

Hey Dogie,

I am still struggling. I am still having problems setting up my avalon 2 units. Do you know any references, forums, or other sources that can help me finish this configuration? I am using a Minepeon software with my raspberry pi. I log in, restart, and reboot the "miners." Under devices, it still says no devices running. I switched my 4 port usb hub with a 7 port usb hub. I don't know what is preventing me. Please help.

Sincerely,

Michael Scholz

Exactly what time of Avalon2 hardware do you have?

Just taken ownership of 2 * Avalon2 singular modulars (105ghz ea).  Having read all the documentation and forum posts that I can, it looks like these devices *can not* be recognised natively on a laptop using unbuntu 12.04 and compiling cgminer or bfgminer with support to see them.

Is that correct?

I've seen one post which mentions how to compile cgminer with the avalon2 driver, and I can see that my avalon2 is registering at /dev/ttyUSB1 but when I run cgminer with "sudo ./cgminer -S /dev/ttyUSB1 -o stratum+tcp://globe.suprnova.cc:3333 -u [my miner] -p [my password] --avalon2-voltage 10000 --avalon2-freq 1500 --avalon2-fan 100" then I get a detection that an avalon 2 device is present, but no communication with it.

Just want to confirm that you can or cannot connect avalon2 single modulars directly to a laptop via USB and run a miner that way, or do I need to fork out more $ for something else in order to use these devices?

You may be able to, but I'm not aware of the exact string to do so in cgminer directly, there are just way too many options. Pick yourself up a TP Link WR703N (http://goo.gl/YMHlxw) and run WRT, it will pay itself back within a few weeks off the power savings for a laptop.

ok, with the TPlink, I can hook up a hub and run two modules I assume, shouldn't be a problem.

Problem is, I'm using a laptop anyway with other miners and have a wireless 4g hotspot serving ip addresses to devices that I connect.  I'll likely be plugging in the TPlink to my laptop anyway and assigning the tplink a manual ip adress.  Sounds like it's not going to work already.

How does everyone else get their TPlink to connect to another wireless network?

The TP links aren't wireless, they need an ethernet in unless you get one of the big ones. They output a single USB, but you can put a powered USB hub in between miner(s) and the TP link.

No worries, so I'd plug the ethernet into my ethernet port on the laptop.  The laptop is connected to my hotspot.  I'd need to set up some how so that the tplink can 'talk' through my laptop to get traffic from the hotspot.  Cannot plug the tp directly into a router.  Am I stuffed?

by the way, the --enable-avalon2 you mentioned before, I think you mean enable that when compiling the miner.  Did that and I get an error on compiling. might be worth getting an earlier version and compiling that perhaps?

Its just a cgminer option when running, but its required.

Have a go giving internet to things via your laptop's ethernet port. If you can with other devices, you'll be able to with the TP link.

Guess what?? I GOT IT WORKING! I cannot believe that I did this, it's like a high that seriously I'm waiting to end.

Geez these things are loud though, going to have to find a way to make it quieter.

What I had to do to get it working under ubuntu 12.04 without needing a tplink was use cgminer 4.0.0 - the latest cgminer (currently 4.2.3) when compiled with --enable-avalon2 comes up with an error on compiling which relates to the Avalon2 driver.  Apparently this is enough for it not to be able to use the ttyUSB port.  So, I compiled v.4.0.0 and lo, all of a sudden it started up.

Now to figure out how to get the noise down a notch 'cause this is in my room and wow! It moves some serious air.

Does anyone have a pre-compiled version of cgminer that is avalon2 enabled for windows?  I need to get this thing started somehow while I figure the rest out, or no ROI.

Why don't you attach a monitor and keyboard onto the pi and see whats going on? I don't have a free Pi to put an Avalon image on unfortunately.

Hrm.  I used the RPI image from here http://downloads.canaan-creative.com/software/avalon2/2014-04-11/ and using openwrt-brcm2708-sdcard-vfat-ext4.img.  If I could just know the root passwd, I would be good to go, or I assume.  Browsing to 192.168.0.100 gives:

On first login pw will be root / blank (blank = no password). It will be set with a pw afterwards.

FW development seems to be handled exclusively by Canaan Creative, and he linked to their software repository in the OP. There is a wiki entry which you may want to read that outlines some of the basics: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Avalon2

I mean PC, Pi etc. You'll likely get that error if there are no devices connected (or powered) properly, else need to restart a few times. You running custom Avalon package?

is it posible ?   connect to avalon2 to usb and mining ?
remove wrt modül
how to  fix avalon2  :) 4 days I could not find a solution: (

You've answered it yourself, the answer is to go back to the old firmware.

Then its likely something hardware based. You're not running the hardware as in the OP so its hard to know what that CN clone is doing.

but i don't think hardware problem; some think software problem... but i can't found  how to fixes software

how to firmware upgrade procedure,

only wr703n  upgrade
or reflash raspberry pi bord sd memory ?

I think with the new software update is now not see the cards of avalon

You sure your pool details are correct? That can cause issues. Must be in the right format.

Hi Dogie, do you have an idea where to find the avalon2 single modular's tech support. I have  the following issue:

Mining stopped, I have restarted the module and the wrt703 together, the lights went up, all on the module and the 2 ones on the controller which the power supply is connected to. When started cgminer
it recognized the module, connects to the pool and when the hashing have to start the lights on the module +  one light on the controller get off, hashing doesn't start just one light on the controller remains on ... that's all. Any suggestions ? huh ...

Absolutely.. for 3 months ... the problem is not on the USb controller, I have 3 more modules .. I swapped the module, the PSU, the cables, tried with and w/o WRT703 with no results, have tested the fan assuming some internal overheat protection can cause such a behavior .. no results ...

Hi Guys
Thanks for this guide.. but I feel I am so completely out of my depth.
I have a Avalon3 single module, a Raspberry pi bought straight from Avalon.. theoretically it should work out of the box(ish) but alas no..
I have took a second SD card and installed Raspbian then compiled latest cgminer with icarus and avalon2 enabled.. however the pi still can't see the miner
(just to offset hardware issues I have 3 single module miners and can't see any of them, assuming that they all aren't borked) I am pretty sure I'm simply not doing something correctly.
I don't really know what to do with the openwrt-brcm2708-sdcard-vfat-ext4.img image... I've installed it onto a SD card and booted pi with it but it spews out a load of stuff then freezes (I thought the pi was borked until I installed Raspbian).
so I'm a bit stuck

possibly how I start the cgminer is the problem?

edit:
using ls /dev/*USB* to identify the usb being used result /dev/ttyUSB0 although not convinced this is completely right as I have a hub

sudo ./cgminer -S /dev/ttyUSB0 is the best I've got so far... but this time I received the error Avalon2: failed to open on /dev/ttyUSB0

What fixed the problem for me:
dont connect a screen to the miner, log in remotely from another PC or browser connected to the Pi via network cable - 192.168.0.100, change IP, connect to internet.
The cgminer didnt see my avalons until I was connected to the internet (pi connected to router)
Set up pool username & Password
Start mining.

I'll give it a go.. but I have noticed my controller board is different from the original controller board
the video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVwDkBKsdgE&feature=youtu.be)
but right now I'll give anything a go

edit:
ok a few hours later and I've given up with this solution, but thanks Leetpro.. but I just can't get a whisper out of the r'pi, my computer just see's the connection as an unidentified connection and that's as far as I get..

(just to expand: I removed everything from the pi just leaving the power and ethernet to the computer, once booted I tried to remote access via a number of methods including browser but nothing could be found).

How did you make that first connection?

Yes thats how long the software has been going, in theory. They might have ruined that line in the software, but its really unlikely.

Yes, please!
Get Win32DiskImager here (http://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/) (assuming you are working on Windows)
get SDFormatter here (https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/)
put your SD card for RaspberryPi into you SDcard reader
Format it using SDFormatter
download the latests firmware from here  (http://downloads.canaan-creative.com/software/avalon2/latest/pi-modelb-v2/20140526/)(select: openwrt-brcm2708-sdcard-vfat-ext4.img (http://downloads.canaan-creative.com/software/avalon2/latest/pi-modelb-v2/20140526/openwrt-brcm2708-sdcard-vfat-ext4.img))
install that image onto your newly formatted SD card  using win32Diskimager

connect your pi to your router, not your computer (windows - I am hopeless with linux, and have not managed to access the control panel directly via Ethernet connected to the computer)
Boot up your pi,
wait
if you have your pi plugged into hdmi onto your TV, when it completes boot and states .. something.. something entering forwarding state.. or something (can't remember the exact line),
(if the display keeps repeating the same message over and over, then that is where it is stuck, google the message.. but be patient, raspberry Pis are slow)
point your browser to 192.168.0.100
If you see it, log in using no password, and change the Network > edit > Protocol > change to DHCP Client
Now your router will give the pi a IP address.. view your routers configuration to identify it or get IP Scanner

If, like me, your router won't allow you to address 192.168.0.100 (or any of the 192.168.0.xxx range) then you need to log into your router settings and change the IP range from whatever to something like 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.150 you should then be able to find it, you can then change it the openwrt settings to DHCP and remove any changes you have made to your router.
Hope that helps
after finally talking to the Avalon devs they suggest, ignore the default settings on the cgminer configuration page and use voltage to 7250, change the frequency to 500

I did everything above, and my Pi is now updated, there is slighly better interface and auto-fan feature, which is nice. But as I understand, "MM"-software also need to be updated. My MM is 331404-b191ace0, and it's the same as before. I read that current MM is 331406-35fef704. Do I need to update it as well and if so, then how?

And one more question - how can I set frequency, voltage and fan speed for every unit individually? Pi interface only allows to change settings for all units at the same time. If I try to write "--avalon-auto" and/or "--avalon-freq 500,550" (I also tried "--avalon-freq 450-550" and ""--avalon-freq 450-500,450-550") at the "More Options" line in Status->CGminer configuration tab - miners simply don't start mining. Is it impossible with Pi?

You'll need to test with another PSU, as its unusual to get some but degraded performance when something isnt working.

O.K. in the miner status it is reporting 110,861 MHSAV. On eclipse it is reporting 15.8 GH/s. My other miners are reporting close to the same numbers in eclipse as what is reported by the miner. I'm also using MultiMiner to watch the miners. The avalon2 is the only one that doesn't show up in MultiMiner.
Changing the power supply doesn't seem to make any difference.

I received an Avalon2 105 about a week and a half ago. Just found time to set it up. I'm only getting 25 to 30 GH/s. I have more rejected than accepted. Running a 600 watt supply Raspberry Pi.
Anyone have any idea?
Exactly what PSU is it?

I am running CoolMax 80 Plus ZX series 600 watt.

You'll need to test with another PSU, as its unusual to get some but degraded performance when something isnt working.

Thank you, after lunch I will put another one on it and try it. Will post what I find.

O.K. in the miner status it is reporting 110,861 MHSAV.

Try a more standard pool like btcguild.

I really don't understand, but it is now working. Last night I added a small miner I picked up. Want to use it to explore other coins. While the larger miners worked away. It is a Klondike K16. As soon as I added it to the works. The Avalon ramped up to 110 GH/s for the1st time . Been running great since. Thought I would share this. So if knows why this changed everything, it could help them if they are having trouble. I would like to thank Dogie for all of his help.. Thank you..

New question.
Before I thought about it I had bought two Avalon2 miners. The other arrived today. I know the address of the 1 is 192.168.0.100 When you are setting up the miner. The one is running on that address. How would I access the new one? Do I change the address on the 1st one? If so how? Then use the common address for the 2nd one?

Thanks,

Jeff

Change the address of the first one, yes. Easiest way is to set its address type to DCHP, then your router will give it an address.

O.K. When I change the address. Does it give me a new address to use to log in with? How do I log into the old Avalon2 via the web browser?

When you go DCHP, login to your router and find the list of devices to find the IP your router gave the first device. DCHP just means instead of the Avalon going: "IM AT THIS IP FUCK YOU ALL" it gets what its given.

Probably a few modules, but after that the Pi might start maxing out.

Its identical to other tplinks. But seeing as bfgminer just updated, you can use USB to a windows based PC if that's easier for you?

You need a B. The A doesn't have an Ethernet port, so you'd need a USB-Ethernet adapter. The image should work fine for the B+ (I think)

Do you have decent fan logic/thermal control? The stock avalon2 cgminer driver has a limitation where fans don't ramp until >59degC which is just way too hot for my application.

There's definitely some software limitation preventing full control of the fan, ie the fan refuses to go lower than x rpm even though the fan itself can go significantly lower. It simply stops responding to the PWM % if you set it any lower in the configuration.

In the case of these Avalon modules it is under host control, at least during runtime. Temps can be read and fan speeds set, which is already done in the cgminer driver (driver-avalon2.c) - but currently the upper and lower limits are static. I'd post some of the code but this messageboard nukes the formatting, the function at line 237 is where the magic happens.

I need to keep temperatures low, so I don't even bump into the upper limit.

Those frequencies and voltages are for an avalon3 - if you have an avalon2 there are different values for both. If you do have an avalon3 just ignore this, it wasn't clear from the post.

How do you reset to factory an Avalon2? Was logged in adjusting the network settings. Lost power and now I cannot log in at all. I ran IP scanner and it doesn't show up.

Help??

You didn't say, most people use TP-Links. If its a Pi just image the SD and start again, won't take more than 10 minuites.

TP Link is cheaper and is simpler.

To "factory reset" a pi, usually you just take the SD card out and reprogram it...

That's what I suggested, so I'm confused why he says that wouldn't work :/

I have tried it again and still the same. I guess I have other problems with the system. Any ideas?

Google how to flash an image to your TP link and download the Avalon image onto it.

Help needed, please.
I've got Avalon2 220GH miner. It worked very well but I decided to upgrade the FW and SW. Firstly, I downloaded and flashed the last Avalon2 .bin - no success. Then I found somewhere that this version of ASIC should be updated with FW for Avalon1. Done, but again no success. I don't remember if I messed with cgminer (I was going to), it was months ago.
Eventually I can't access the miner's interface to fix this problem. I get into failsafe mode (rapid LED blinking) but this doesn't help. Advanced IP Scanner sees the router as a 'dead' host. No ping, no telnet, no ssh.
Any chance to help me? Thanks.

If you plug the modules into a PC, you can just run BFGMiner and it should work fine.

Thank you for the idea. However, I want to get rid of my problem in principle.

Google for WRT failsafe instructions, then you can reflash the Avalon WRT OS.

I found lots of instructions how to flash WR703N in different modes, in Linux and Windows. The real problem is that I can't reach it by LAN through ping, telnet, nor ssh. IP scanner sees the router as 'dead' host in failsafe 192.168.0.100, and 'live' when normally started but again, no ping, no telnet, no ssh.

BTW what is the microUSB port left open for in Avalon? Never met any use of it in instructions.

Google specifically for failsafe, you have to hit the reset button in a particular pattern to boot it into a different mode... which then allows you to reflash the WRT image.

Thank you but I'm doing that exactly. When booting normally, the blue LED flashes numerous times slowly (~2 Hz) then it lights. For failsafe I press reset button, and LED begins to flash very fast and keeps flashing.
Then, see above...  ???

UPD: Plus, I tried connecting Avalon to two different PCs, to router it used to work through, used different LAN cables, network settings. Each time everything works perfect but no ping, no telnet, no ssh.

UPD2: Is it possible to use an original WR703N (the blue box) as replacement with Avalon?

The fact the LEDs are flashing correctly suggests its waiting at that IP now. You can follow my alternative subnet setup instructions from the Bitmain S3 thread to get there. If its still not working then I'm not sure what is going wrong. Yes you can use an original WR703N, and flash the Avalon image.

Progress Report (no progress actually)

1. I disconnected the network module from Avalon and connected it through LAN and microUSB charger. The behavior is the same, visible as 192.168.0.100, 'dead' in failsafe, live in 'normal' boot (with IP scanner). No ping, no telnet, no ssh.
2. I've got another WR703N native device. It works perfect but connected to Avalon it gets no power. It's not the same as the Avalon network module.
3. Got an idea about some LightningAsic firmware reportedly best for routers and mining. Still trying to figure out.

ok so I got a bat file to start up the BFGminer.. i used this one:
bfgminer -S avalonmm:\\.\COM22 --set avalonmm:clock=1500 --set avalonmm:voltage=1 --set avalonmm:fan=80

i changed the com port to mine wich says 5 and saved the file.
i double click the bat file and BFG miner opens up and asks for url , username, and PW.

i enter that info and it say no new devices found
and pool 0 is hiding info

can anyone help me understand what i am doing wrong?

Yes, it has info about configuring BFGminer generally so you don't have to type pool and login each time. I'm not sure why you're not getting it shown though.

They're worth something, head over to marketplace -> goods -> computer hardware

Ok, so i a got a hand me down Avalon 2 (one of the Chinese knock off, as it has a Bitmine.com sticker on it and it's in a stainless steel case). I was able to reset the password, and can now log in but i can get this thing to mine to save my life. I've played with all the different setting i could think of but i keep get tons of discards. to be honest i haven't actually mined an accepted share yet, but tons and tons of discards. I'm hoping somebody has some idea as to what i can try cause i'm all out of ideas... i have no clue what else to do and i've been working on this for at least a week. I'm super lost guys and any help anybody can provide is greatly appreciated.

heres some pics of what i'm getting:
