LOST (STOLEN) FUNDS.

All $16M worth of ETH related tokens identified by elementus.io can be read in this article: https://elementus.io/blog/cryptopia-hack-transparency/ and this breakdown: https://github.com/elementus-io/cryptopia-hack I'll be adjusting these running totals during today.  If a token is part of the list provided by elementus.io then it will be identified by the Token code being in grey and italics eg ETH

Their doesn't seem to be as much of a frenzy over this hackening as their was for Cryptsy.
It's almost like we are desensitized to exchange hacks by now having been around for so many of them..

I'm hoping for the best in this situation obviously but by now people should know not to store significant amounts in exchanges because their are so many ways things can go bad doing that.
Maybe one of the reasons their isn't that much of a commotion over this is that people know they should be in control of their own keys and know they partially have themselves to blame full well by now, and they are not surprised.

The coins prices are in the gutters at this time too, similar to the lows during the Crypty hack.
I haven't seen hide nor hair from Bruno over this one yet either..

I doubt we will see he-who-shall-not-be-named given Cryptopia is on the other side of the planet from him. (assuming he's come back down to Earth...)

It's not just about the loss of funds, it's also about the fact that many teams paid them to host their coins and then were delisted.  Coinexchange and many other exchanges do not delist coins like that.   If Cryptopia go down, a lot of coins will have some significant losses to their plans, because they won't have an exchange to trade on anymore.  It will be good to see decentralized exchanges and free listings of coins which has been happening in the newer small exchanges.

All these projects should head over to Blocknet's DX (Discord:  https://discord.gg/2e6s7H8).  Listings are completely free and their exchange is completely decentralized from its orderbook to order matching.  Pure wallet-to-wallet atomic swap trading so your funds are always in your own possession - no middle man or centralized entity/3rd party.

Luckily for Einsteinium (EMC2), we were forced to leave Cryptopia on Jan 4th on 'First Come First Serve' basis.

EMC2 51% attack on Cryptopia started on September 23rd and lasted for 10 days!
We offered reimbursement for initial wave, but it did not work out, as they were requesting full amount of 10 days of hacking which was close to 2 Millions of EMC2.
Here is our statement on that https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=494708.msg48633011#msg48633011 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=494708.msg48633011#msg48633011)

FYI EMC2 implemented Komodo's (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1605144.0) Delayed Proof of Work and is now 51% attack resistant.

We all know what Cryptopia is, and that big number of coins they carry represents vulnerability, but they've been playing important part in crypto ecosystem, motherly maintaining all those coins. They also have great native UI which was fun to use.

It is unfortunate what happened, but keep in mind many big exchanges went through the same experience.
If they manage to come back, they will come stronger and better. It is part of growing.

We wish them all the best.

I might as well start adding up the transactions that have been identified:

A user named Mark Patterson just offered 211.000 mgo for an over the counter trade in the mobilego telegram community channel. These 211.000 mgo where stolen from cryptopia. Warn your community members if your coin is stolen.

for now we know only about $5 millions of eth and cennz but i doubt its the only crypto stolen

looks like it started 2 days ago

Police have locked down the office of a Christchurch cryptocurrency trader after it lost what appears to be millions of dollars worth of currency in a security breach.

Cryptopia's Colombo St headquarters was under police lock down on Wednesday morning after a "significant amount" of cryptocurrency is thought to have been transferred at the trader without authorisation.

Some staff gathered in the upstairs car park as others were questioned by police.

An officer was visible in the second-storey window of the Colombo St office. Another stood in the foyer behind locked sliding doors.

Investigators were flying down from Wellington on Wednesday morning, police said.

A police statement said officers were advised late on Monday of "an issue involving potential unauthorised transaction activity".

Police were taking the matter "very seriously", the statement said.

"We are currently talking to the company to gain a further understanding of what has occurred.

    — Cryptopia Exchange (@Cryptopia_NZ) January 15, 2019

"A dedicated investigation team is being established in Christchurch including specialist police staff with expertise in this area."

And now the capital markets regulator the Financial Markets Authority has been called in.

An FMA spokesman said Cryptopia reported the breach to the FMA on Wednesday morning.

"We will be engaging with the firm and the police."

The FMA has received complaints about Cryptopia in the past and these were either forwarded onto a dispute resolution service or the FMA explained to Cryptopia customers the process for making a complaint to the dispute resolution service, the spokesman said.

The FMA did not regulate Cryptopia or the cryptocurrencies that it trades, but those providing a financial service related to cryptocurrencies needed to register on the Financial Services Providers Register – which enabled customers to access an independent dispute resolution service, he said.

Easy Crypto co-founder Janine Grainger said the Cryptopia incident did not do the cryptocurrency market any favours.

"Every time there's a hack like this it does instil a bit of uncertainty in the public's mind," Grainger said.

"Part of the problem is it's a very young industry so hacks like this are fairly common place."

She said there had been reports by blockchain transaction monitoring accounts on social media that the Cryptopia transfer involved two transactions worth a US$3.6 million (NZ$5.3m) combined.

One was for US$1.2m worth of a cryptocurrency called Centrality. That equates to 48 million tokens.

The second was for US$2.4m in Ethereum, or about 19 thousand tokens.

She said it was unlikely the tokens would ever be found, because there were so many exchanges they could be traded through, making tracing them a difficult task.

"I would imagine whoever has taken these funds is very good at hiding their tracks."

The best cryptocurrency experts in the world would have trouble finding out what happened to the funds, let alone the New Zealand police, she said.

She hoped police would learn from the experience and dedicate more resources to cryptocurrency crime prevention.

She warned cryptocurrency investors to be careful where they store their funds.

Rather than storing cryptocurrency in exchanges they should be kept in "cold storage", a secure storage system that's not connected to the internet such as a USB drive.

A number of Kiwis have been posting about losses on social media.

Adam Lyness, who worked as Cryptopia business development manager until November, said he did not have any information other than what was in the public domain.

He said people went into cryptocurrency trading knowing the risks involved.

"It's a new industry so I think most people going in would be aware and go in with their eyes open to the risks."

The industry had a history of security breaches, Lyness said.

"That's the nature of the industry."

He said when he left Cryptopia it had about 100 staff.

However, Companies Office records show Lyness still owns a third of a company called Intranel Consulting, which owns a quarter of Cryptopia.

Late on Sunday Cryptopia tweeted it was experiencing "unscheduled maintenance".

Then on Monday, it posted a statement to Twitter saying it had suffered a "security breach" that day which resulted in "significant losses".

#Cryptopia has announced that they have faced #security #breach, with rumours circulating that a large amount of #ERC20 assets have been lost. Which seem to be true when we look to their hot wallet; https://t.co/JiwfNz0Xhw pic.twitter.com/lni0yl0jxk
    — Samuel JJ Gosling (@xGozzy) January 15, 2019

The cryptocurrency exchange had been put into maintenance while staff assessed the damages, it said.

"Staff then notified and involved the appropriate Government agencies, including NZ Police and High Tech Crimes Unit who are jointly and actively investigating the matter as a major crime and they are assisting us with advice.

"Until this has been carried out, the Cryptopia Exchange will remain in maintenance mode, with trading suspended."

Cryptopia was founded by Rob (Hex) Dawson and Adam Clark as a hobby three years ago.

It now has more than 1.4 million users.

It offers trading in a number of different cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Litecoin and Doge.

Dawson's father, Pete Dawson, is now the sole director and a 5 per cent shareholder of Crypotpia. Pete Dawson, who is the Canterbury Returned Services Association (RSA) president said police had told him to say nothing.

The company has 90 shareholders, most of them with a less than 1 per cent shareholding. The main shareholders are Clark with 30 per cent, Dawson with 27 per cent and Intranel Consulting with 26 per cent.

Its registered office is in the Christchurch suburb Sydenham.

I am on the SexCoin CORE team (https://sexcoin.info/#team) which was one of the altcoins affected, so I have been aware of Cryptopia's failing security system and their position of shifting the blame for the hack onto the the Dev Team's of the coins affected instead of admitting that they had repeatedly failed to notice large sums of coins going missing from their hot wallets until it was far too late.

I agree that 10 days is too long. But 51% attacks are hard to detect on an exchange wallet. This is due to the large amounts of wallets. User deposit addresses, hot wallets, cold wallets etc.

Any information of a 51% attack deficit (the correct balance) has to be obtained from the blockchain - which was 51% attacked. (https://www.investopedia.com/terms/1/51-attack.asp) Such balance is only available a substantial time after the attack has occurred.

For instance bitcoin monitors orphans. https://www.blockchain.com/btc/orphaned-blocks

What  puzzles me is why a coin network hasn't detected the 51% attack for over 10 days. After all - they only have one network to monitor rather than close to 500.  The trust of the entire network relies on the ability to fairly process immutable transactions. A 51% attack by definition is a blockchain based attack (https://www.investopedia.com/terms/1/51-attack.asp) and it would be relatively obvious that there are a massive amount of orphans.

What you are saying - the blockchain send a fake statement (node confirmations) . But the blockchain has since deleted those (orphaned them) and after that is showing a different balance an the exchange didn't notice that for 10 days (but also wasn't allerted by the blockchain devs).
The blockchain allowed transactions occur and confirmed them initially as being true. But the attacker of the blockchain has replaced them with other fake transactions and we are holding them as true and correct. Sorry but the fake transaction are now considered the real transactions and the exchange has the problem

The reality is that after a 51% attack the blockchain balance has been altered by the 51% attacker.  So it is neither immutable or a fair representation of what occurred.
Effectively with a 51% attack and double spend fraudulent transactions get processed as real by the blockchain.

After a successfull 51% attack a blockchain no longer is , immutable, fair, reliable or representative of what should have occurred.

How does a double spend 51% attack work ? Explanation and examples. (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5035336.msg46025953#msg46025953)

EDIT:

This attack on Cryptopia is a sad event. Many coins are listed on there and many are reliant on Cryptopia as their only exchange.

I'm sure there is much more to this because only ETH and ERC tokens appear to be involved from the visible blockchain data.

A year ago, it seemed there was news about cryptocurrencies every other week.

Bitcoin surged in value from US$900 a coin to nearly US$20,000.

A new industry grew alongside it, allowing punters to buy, sell and speculate in the host of new digital currencies springing to life.

One of the big international players was Kiwi trading firm Cryptopia.

* Bitcoin prices dive as South Korea says cryptocurrency ban still an option

Now, the value of Bitcoin has fallen to US$3606 and the digital currency chatter has dropped away with it.

But many of Cryptopia's followers stuck around - and were shocked by news on Wednesday that it seems that millions of dollars had gone missing from the exchange.

What is Cryptopia, anyway?

Cryptopia is an online currency trading platform started by Rob (Hex) Dawson and Adam Clark, first as a hobby, in 2015.

As Bitcoin surged to new heights at the start of last year, so too did the Cryptopia business. In early 2017, Cryptopia had 30,000 users, rising to 1 million in December 2017. After the first week of January, 2018, the number of users hit 1.4 million.

Not bad for a Christchurch-based start-up.

But that huge growth created its own problems.

In early January last year, the platform froze trading in some of its markets as it struggled to deal with the volumes being processed.

Then-business development manager and shareholder Adam Lyness said it had had to suspend trading in two basemarkets, in the Doge and Litecoin currencies, to keep up with demand.

That upset some traders who were watching the value of those coins surge on other markets, but unable to sell the tokens they had locked in via Cryptopia.

Legal threats emerged

Problems continued over the next few months.

By March, there was talk of a class action against Cryptopia by people who were frustrated by delays and the inability to access money tied up in the platform.

Canterbury Legal director Clive Cousins told media that his firm had received enough complaints about the platform to become aware of the scale of problems. It sought expressions of interest in a class action.

Cryptopia chief executive Alan Booth said at the time that there was no basis for the action and it was doing its best in difficult circumstances.

"Cryptopia has experienced incredibly fast growth. Last quarter our user base grew by 940 per cent, and as with any company expanding at this pace, we have faced many challenges.

"I guarantee we will dramatically improve as we increase resource and attention in this area. Rest assured that customers who raise support tickets (help desk queries) with issues relating to deposit, withdrawals or compromised accounts are our highest priority.

"We've launched better education tools for users via our help centre, new ticketing systems and processes and set clear targets for our support team."

As the crypto craze abated, so too did the volume of reports of problems with Cryptopia. But die-hard trading fans were still complaining.

In November 2018, users said more than 100 markets had been disabled.

New currency launched

In May 2017, Cryptopia launched its own new digital currency, linked to the value of the New Zealand dollar.

This made it easier for New Zealanders to trade: The NZDT allowed New Zealanders to put their money into a local bank account and receive the equivalent in NZDT tokens.

They could then use those to buy Bitcoin - or other currencies - and could sell their digital currencies for NZDT, then transfer it to New Zealand dollars when they wanted to get out.

Then shelved

But it was not long before the currency had to be set aside due to bank concerns.

The exchange said that its bank, ASB, had told it that it would close the accounts for its New Zealand dollar-tethered currency (NZDT) on February 9.

Then-New Zealand Bankers' Association chief executive Karen Scott-Howman said anti-money laundering laws were one of the main reasons that banks struggled with cryptocurrencies.

Those laws require banks to be able to trace funds to their source - but anonymity is one of the reasons that many people use digital currencies.

ASB said it could not comment on Cryptopia's case.

"However, we are currently reviewing our relationships with crypto-exchanges, while ensuring we comply with our regulatory obligations," a spokeswoman said.

"Ultimately, our goal is to keep our customers safe as we turn our minds to a number of evolving business models, including crypto."

Is this the end?

Police have now stormed the office of a Christchurch cryptocurrency trader after millions of dollars worth of currency appears to have disappeared in a security breach.

Cryptopia's Colombo St headquarters was under police lockdown on Wednesday morning after a "significant amount" of cryptocurrency is thought to have been transferred without authorisation.

What this means for traders is yet to be seen, but whether money has been lost or not, the blow to confidence in Cryptopia will most likely prove fatal.

Today I read an article where some users claim that it could be initiated from within. Perhaps the exchange itself or someone from the employees appropriated the money for themselves. Article in Russian https://forklog.com/chast-propavshih-s-cryptopia-sredstv-obnaruzhena-na-birzhe-binance/
On January 13 there were two big transactions for $ 4 million (19,391 ETH/ 48,029,306 CENNZ). Very suspicious

Some of the funds missing from Cryptopia were found on the Binance exchange.

news 01/16/2019

CEO Binance Changphen Zhao confirmed that a part of the funds missing earlier this week from the New Zealand Cryptopia was found on the cryptocurrency exchange headed by him, after which he was successfully blocked.

In particular, Zhao responded to the tweet by @ShaftedTangu, who tried to attract the attention of Binance representatives to the fact that the funds missing from Cryptopia seem to have been found.

Just checked, we were able to make some money. I don’t understand why the hackers keep sending to Binance. And we will freeze it. It's a high risk maneuver for them. https://t.co/i0PeahLzic

    - CZ Binance (@cz_binance) January 16, 2019

“Just checked, we managed to freeze part of the funds. I do not understand why hackers constantly send [coins] to Binance. Social networks react very quickly, and it is easy for us to freeze funds. These are very risky maneuvers for them [hackers], ”Zhao wrote.

Recall, representatives of Cryptopia reported on Tuesday, January 15, about the suspension of work due to "substantial losses" due to a security breach. Somewhat later, when there were rumors that the exchange itself could be involved in the loss of funds, the New Zealand police joined the investigation into the incident. Official confirmation of exactly what amounts in question, however, has been reported.

Nevertheless, as Changpeng Zhao correctly noted, “social networks react very quickly,” and we can say in advance that the damage has been partially fixed. In particular, users drew attention to a rather interesting chronology of events, suggesting that the theft of approximately $ 14 million (this amount is previously discussed) in ETH and ERC-20 tokens could be initiated from the inside. At the same time, the so-called exit-scam is not excluded - an attempt by the management or someone from the staff to appropriate the funds of users.

So, on Tuesday, on the subreddit of r / cryptopia, user toldjahP posted an entry in which he referred to several Ethereum transactions that were made from Cryptopia’s purses about 17 hours before the exchange announced “unplanned technical work” and then recognized the loss of funds.

It is also noteworthy that the famous Twitter account Whale Alert drew attention to the fact that funds from Cryptopia are transferred to unknown wallets on January 13th. It was about at least two very impressive transactions: at 19,391 ETH (about $ 2.5 million) and 48,029,306 CENNZ ($ 1.17 million).

19,391 #ETH (2,438,152 USD) transferred from #Cryptopia to Unknown wallet

    Tx: https://t.co/xTxMKRJSD8

    - Whale Alert (@whale_alert) January 13, 2019

48,029,306 #CENNZ (1,176,596 USD) transferred from #Cryptopia to Unknown wallet

    Tx: https://t.co/u3RiHh7riT

    - Whale Alert (@whale_alert) January 13, 2019

In his record on Reddit, toldjahP also provides a link to a transaction in the amount of 3.8 billion DAPS tokens from the Decentralized project Anonymous Payments System. But even more interesting is the last link, which leads to an address that at some point turned out to be more than $ 11 million in various ERC-20 tokens. All of them were sent from Cryptopia almost simultaneously and belong to a variety of projects, including Dentacoin, Spank, Ethereum Dark, TenX Pay, Bytom and Golem.

Later, the already mentioned @shaftedTangu led a detailed course of events in the thread on Twitter:

Topia hack addresses. This is topia ETH / ERC20 address https://t.co/wZ7THdpYc6

    - 🐒🐵I Dream Of Alts🐵🐒 (@ShaftedTangu) January 15, 2019

It is also alleged that part of the funds was not only on Binance, but also on other exchanges.

We add that the representatives of Cryptopia have not yet commented on the information published on social networks.

I am strongly of the opinion that whenever an exchange hack happens, there are insiders and staff who might have compromised information. This is the case with Cryptopia. I really don't care how anyone argues otherwise. This is my 2cent.

When will cryptopia customers be able too log in and get there coins back

Short answer - given there is a police investigation, could be months if not years for the NZ Police to establish what was taken and by whom.  Firstly there is the theft in January 2019 of Crypto to investigate, then there is the issue of potentially trading while insolvent due to Cryptopia being unable to repay to depositors funds that had been stolen via 51% attacks in the second half of 2018. Then there are the class actions to recover funds by depositors to be considered. In all likely-hood an administrator would be likely be appointed to forensically examine which accounts owned what and seek a determination from a Judge how best to distribute to the masses funds from both hot and cold wallets which is why I am trying to gather together in this thread proof of what crypto was stolen and what hot and cold wallets have been left intact (not to mention any class actions & news articles on the Police's investigation and the NZ Crown's DPP potentially laying charges ( and the time frames those proceedings might take) ).

Get yourself a pen and paper and write down as many details as you can about your own account.

user name, password, email address - any 2FA and any recovery codes. Deposits. Withdrawls. What coins were up for sale (or buy). Even your Karma score.

Given that it could be years - put that sheet of paper in a safe place. Memories, Hard Drives and Mobile phones come and go, a sheet of paper in a safe place can be the key to recovering your funds in a few years time.

Mothership Public Statement regarding the Cryptopia’s security breach on 14th Jan, 2019

Linh Le Jan 22 (2019)

https://blog.mothership.cx/mothership-public-statement-54aac6ee03cf - Archive: http://archive.fo/MK9P1

Quote
The official public statement from Mothership regarding the recent event happened to Cryptopia.

Mothership would like to release an official statement in the wake of the Cryptopia event, which in their own words:

14th January 2019, the Cryptopia Exchange suffered a security breach which resulted in significant losses. Once identified, the exchange was put into maintenance while we assessed damages.
Cryptopia has notified and is cooperating with the appropriate government agencies, including the NZ Police and High Tech Crimes Unit.

As the event unfolds, Mothership stakeholders had a considerable amount of tokens on the site and have been affected by the breach with over 32 million MSP, which is about 15% of the total supply. Cryptopia has not confirmed if the tokens on their exchange have been stolen; but as a company with a large number of customers involved, Mothership ought to take proper measurements and consider the worst scenario of this event as a hacking incident.

For immediate course of actions, we have reached out to HitBTC and Lykke regarding blacklisting the stolen coins. We are also getting in touch with Cryptopia while setting up our own onchain tracking so we know where the funds move and can blacklist them ourselves.

In direct reaction to the 32 million MSP affected, Mothership has decided to carry out a token swap. Those who are in possession of their tokens will be able to simply exchange their MSP. And those who have suffered from the Cryptopia incident will be able to go through a claim process and reclaim their MSP.

We will not build a separate swap product, but implement this swap on our own exchange, so the timing of the swap will follow the schedule of our launch.

The swap and claim process, at the time of discussion, will be roughly as follow:

    People who have MSP will have to create an account on the Mothership exchange, deposit their MSP and get the same amount of new tokens on their balance;
People who had MSP on Cryptopia will also have to create an account on our exchange and make a claim. We will then manually check each claim with Cryptopia, if they agree to cooperate, and grant the new token accordingly if the claim is confirmed as legitimate.

For the time being, those who have been affected are welcome to begin the claim process by filling out this form. Please note that the investigation is still ongoing, and we yet have to discuss the terms of cooperation with Cryptopia — meaning the likely time frame we are looking at for the swap is a few months from now. However, we would like to get to know you right away, and represent your interests as a group.

Mothership is acknowledging the severity of the Cryptopia’s breach and its consequences, but we would like to take the chance to reaffirm that Mothership will not let the event interfere with our plan to launch our own exchange. Our Chief Technical Officer and the Product team will continue as normal and any technical activities for the swap will happen AFTER launch.

As for the time being, we will get to know all the affected persons, establish communication with Cryptopia, assemble data, and map out a more detailed plan. We will of course keep you updated on our efforts of tracking the stolen coins, and for other exchanges we might issue a blacklist ourselves so it is easier for them.

We thank everyone for their support and understanding of our decisions as well as handling in the wake of the event. Any questions or comments regarding the event can be asked directly on the Mothership main Telegram group, or in the chat box on our platform.

FOR THE MENTIONED CLAIM FORM, PLEASE CLICK HERE

* For holders who do not remember the exact amount of MSP they had on Cryptopia — it’s OK — just tell us the approximate amount in the form so we can understand the magnitude of your share. We will be checking every claim with Cryptopia to confirm the precise numbers.

I don't understand from ths thread if BTC have been stolen too or not.

A quick check of this website: https://www.walletexplorer.com/ shows there doesn't seem to have been a known Cryptopia wallet(s) for BitCoin.  Most attention has been on the ERC 20 / ETH tokens not the Crypto Coins such as BitCoin, LiteCoin or similar.

Any information will be gratefully appreciated.

I read on CoinTelegraph article about Cryptopia "New Analysis Suggests" 01.22.
They wrote that total stolen coins value is 16 million dollars and stolen coins are ETH and ERC20 tokens.
Two wallets is hacked, one for ETH and one for ERC20 token, on the morning of Jan. 13

"In Cryptopia’s case, the thieves’ gained access to as many as over 76,000 wallets, and moreover apparently displayed a lack of urgency in siphoning the funds over time. Elementus moreover suggests that Cryptopia’s inaction — for several days after the incident was detected — may imply the exchange had lost access to its own wallets."

"As previously reported, until now estimations of the lost funds ranged between $3-13 million. Up to 40 Cryptopia users are reported to have sought legal representation in the incident’s aftermath."

How I see this is not good at all......
You can see all details/article here:

Engineering is not watching the crystal ball. There are no 'hard things to do', but rather things that are either working or not.
51% is detected by software modules, monitors (and not by visually examining blocks in the chain), and they can trigger alerts.
Most coins are BTC forks so the way you set alert for one coin, you can set to all other coins.
If for whatever reason you can not set alert for specific coin, you do no list that coin, as security monitoring is essential and very basic responsibility for any exchange.
If there is no security there is no exchange.

I think you missed the point. I totally agree that coins that are unable to secure their blockchain have no place on an exchange and need to be delisted / not listed.

While it is important for exchanges to monitor blockchain operation and developments - ultimately the security of the blockchain is the responsibility of the developers of that blockchain.

Saying the exchange is responsible is like saying a reseller of software is responsible for the software itself. Ultimately the responsibility of the reliability of the operation of the software lies with the software developers.

If I sell something and the bank (blockchain) confirms the deposit and then I send the goods based on that advise - and later the bank reverses the transaction (after I sent the goods) then the problem has occurred at the bank (blockchain). Whether it is "open source", "decentralized" or whatever  - it is irrelevant. The initial failing is at blockchain level.

There are certain things that an exchange can monitor.  Ultimately if a blockchain gets attacked then the blockchain needs to fix the problem or get delisted.

Some blockchains have realized that and solved the issue while other conveniently shift the blame.

You will find that there are always those that disagree in opinion over this but by nature of a 51% attack - it cannot be detected until after it has occurred. Therefore if it can occur easily - the blockchain no longer has a valid commercial use.

Lets not forget, you do not have to list all those coins. It is a choice, not must!
As I said, if you do not have monitoring system for specific type of coins you do not list them.

Don't forget that coins pay to be listed and part of that they agree to the conditions of listing. It is a binding contract.
Some of the coins were listed well before 51% attacks became a valid security issue.

Blaming coin devs is not the way to go.

When a coin is exploited and fail to meet the conditions of listing (breach of contract)  then they are to blame.

Legit coins take their responsibilities seriously:

Coinbase went ahead to claim that all exchanges offering fiat based trading pairs and a wide range of assets could continue to fall victim to such attacks.

When they sent bills to developers that bill was min 10 times bigger.

But the coin developers also didn't detect the 51% attacks and act on them. They have only one network to monitor and are contractually obliged to monitor it. (https://support.cryptopia.co.nz/csm?id=kb_article&sys_id=5d7482d2db9e9bc032a664a14a96199f)

Before you list, be aware of your obligations to us to help maintain your listing.

You need to give us notice of the following:

At least 2 weeks' notice of any significant code or protocol changes for your coin, especially hard forks.
Major issues with your coin, including hacks or network problems, as soon as you become aware of them.
Any issues with deposits or withdrawals of your coin from Cryptopia.
At least 1 month's notice if you want our assistance with an air drop. Be aware that support for this is solely at our discretion.
As much notice as possible if you need to conduct a coin swap. By default we don't support coin swaps, but they may be considered on a case by case basis.
Cryptopia reserves the right to remove any coin listed in its exchange markets for violations of our listing terms. This is solely at our discretion. Reasons a coin may be eligible for delisting include, but are not limited to:

Any network issues or vulnerabilities that could be exploited. Examples include:
Low hash-rate.

Out of date code base or wallet stability issues.
Frequent issues with deposits or withdrawals (outside of Cryptopia's control).
Insufficient nodes to keep the wallet synced and network propagating transactions.
Coins which violate our terms and conditions, policies, or an applicable NZ law or regulation
Coin swaps (where we are unable to support these)
Coins without a working, reliable block explorer
Coins that fail to provide notification of mandatory updates
Abuse directed by a coin team's core community at Cryptopia or its staff.
At our discretion, Cryptopia may issue a warning for breaches of our listing terms and conditions and provide the coin team an opportunity to rectify any issue(s).

Coins issued with a delist notice will have their markets closed and there will be a 30-day notice and withdrawal period before the listing is removed. This information will be published on our coin info, delisting, and market pages and we will endeavour to email all affected users holding positive balances of the coin.

You like to keep confusing people, dont you?

Policies are not contracts !

Policies you can change any time anyhow.

Contracts consider two sides bindings.

I think the words Before you list, be aware of your obligations - makes it quite clear.

A "Terms Of Service" is a contract. A reference to their policies is specifically mentioned in their TOS.

I don't work for Cryptopia so I'm not privy to the discussions that coin devs have with their staff.

However - I know that they have had a similar listing & delisting policy published on their site since early 2016.

Is 'First come first serve' legal or not?

The only thing that would be stopping payments in such a scenario is the blockchain ledger balance which was fraudulently altered by the 51% attack.

yes or NO?

I don't think it is legal that the blockchain is dishonoring the blockchain balance it initially confirmed prior to being exploited and fraudulently altered by a 51% attack.  Do you ?

There are numerous things a coin can do if it does not have sufficient hashrate to protect the network:

Checkpointing.
Changing to a less vulnerable algorythm
Introducing a hybrid system.
Utilising masternodes.

Your refusal to answer the question and use of an alt account to post speaks volumes. Which 51% attacked coin are you representing ?

No, it's not.

Police baffled as crypto-currency funds disappear

https://www.radionz.co.nz/national/programmes/morningreport/audio/2018680963/police-baffled-as-crypto-currency-funds-disappear

From Morning Report, 8:44 am today (Monday, 4th February 2019)

Quote
Funds are continue to be drained from the New Zealand digital currency exchange Cryptopia more than two weeks after police started investigating. Various cryptocurrencies believed to be worth more than $23 million have been siphoned from the trading exchange since it was first hacked on January 14. But even with scores of police investigators on the case, money is still disappearing, the latest being 260 thousand dollars worth last week. on Tuesday. Max Galker, who runs the cryptocurrency watchdog Elementus, has been monitoring the flow of virtual money from Cryptopia. He told RNZ reporter Matthew Theunissen most hackers aren't caught.

Just wanted to add another Cryptopia wallet so we have them all listed in one place:

- Cryptopia wallet https://etherscan.io/address/0x2984581eCE53A4390d1F568673cf693139C97049 (https://etherscan.io/address/0x2984581eCE53A4390d1F568673cf693139C97049)

One more note I was intrigued by this transaction:

Robbers scraped 0,47 ETH that came 2 days after first hack (probably by accident).

This last robbery of 0,47 ETH took place 14 days after the main hack  ??? ???

This shows that Cryptopia lost control completely of their wallets.

Hi,

Well spotted - I know from living across the ditch in SEQ that when the rest of the country goes onto nutty time that times on the east coast are still AEST (ie GMT +10) as opposed to AEDST.

And so it is for New Zealand that New Zealand is and always will be (unless the international date line gets moved yet again (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Date_Line#Samoan_Islands_and_Tokelau_(1892_and_2011))) sitting at GMT +10.   When NZ goes onto nutty time most of the rest of the planet stops being on nutty time, then when they go onto nutty time New Zealand has recovered its senses (thus nature balances itself out)...

I've cast very long shadows down Princess Street towards St Kilda Beach and along Linwood Avenue towards Ferrymead... (... and New Brighton Beach  :o )

I'll be over for WOW (https://www.worldofwearableart.com/) again this year.

Our organization as an incorporated company is gathering informations in order to make a legal class-action against Cryptopia on behalf of Gunbot users that have lost their funds at Cryptopia. I will post on our forum detailed instructions. The service is totally free for Gunbot users , if any not Gunbot users wanna join (assuming we are talking about serious cases with proofs of lost funds) you are welcome to message me or one of our staff.

Doesnt worth as much imo since funds are already gone but still Cryptopia owners are a legal entity and if any kind of responsibility is proven by a court, they are liable.

If you were talking about our initiative, the legal fees are free for all Gunbot users. It depends if the number of people that are not gunbot users and would apply are treasurable or not, our lawyers might or might not ask for a fee, it isn't decided yet and eventually I will notice everyone about their requests before to accept non gunbot users applications.

Fresh information from reddit - Cryptopia has permission to reopen

Hi guys,

I'm a journalist in NZ.

I just had some communication with police, who confirm they have wrapped up the on-site investigation.

From detective inspector Greg Murton: "Cryptopia management have full access to their facility and business premises and the Police investigation is not preventing their business from getting up and running again. However only Cryptopia management can speak to when it may be open again."

Well, if not taking into account the previous format, I would point out the following benefits in new one:

- viewing all titles of articles in one post allows to choose the one of your interest while not going through entire thread;
- for the contributors it is helpful to have a quick view and not to duplicate already submitted articles;
- a post about lost (stolen) and frozen funds will be even more interesting after reopening of Cryptopia or statement from Cryptopia on those figures.

Hacked Exchange Cryptopia Discloses Estimate of Stolen Crypto

Yogita Khatri
Feb 27, 2019 at 10:30 UTC  Updated Feb 27, 2019 at 10:38 UTC

New Zealand-based cryptocurrency exchange Cryptopia has given an idea of the losses arising from a hack on its platform last month.

After being almost silent since the breach, the firm published a series of updates via Twitter on Wednesday. Most notably, Cryptopia provided an update on how much of the total assets held by the platform was lost in the cyber-attack, saying:

“We are continuing to work on assessing the impact incurred as a result of the hack in January. Currently, we have calculated that worst case 9.4% of our total holdings was stolen.”

It did not provide an idea of that amount in monetary terms.

Cryptopia went offline on Jan. 15 saying it had suffered a “security breach which resulted in significant losses.” The exchange did not provide any specific information at the time and has since said it cannot comment while an investigation by the New Zealand Police is underway.

A blockchain data analytics firm estimated after the attack that as much as $16 million in ether and ERC-20 tokens could have lost. Notably, hackers still had control over Cryptopia even after the police had been brought in and reportedly stole an additional 1,675 ether from 17,000 wallets – an amount worth about $181,000 at the time.

In Wednesday’s tweets, the exchange said it is “securing each wallet individually” to ensure it is “fully secure” when resuming trading.

Cryptopia also warned:

“As a result of the new wallets please immediately refrain from depositing funds into old Cryptopia addresses. We have more updates to come tomorrow, keep an eye on our page.”

New Zealand Police said on Feb. 7 that it expected to complete the inspection of Cryptopia’s premises by mid-month. Cryptopia confirmed in a tweet on Feb. 14 that the police had given them access back to its building, while the investigation was continuing.

Detective inspector Greg Murton of the New Zealand Police said at the time that the case is “progressing well and advancing on several fronts,” adding:

“The focus is on identifying those behind this offending and retrieving the stolen cryptocurrency. This investigation is expected to take a considerable amount of time to resolve due to the complexity of the cyber environment.”

Will Cryptopia Finally Reopen After $16M Hack?
Cryptopia, the New Zealand-based cryptocurrency exchange that suffered a $16 million hack in January was supposed to be relaunching the exchange on March 3. However, due to unforeseen delays, the relaunch was postponed and is now set to launch today, March 5.

Update: We were aiming to get the site live today however, we have had a slight delay and are aiming to have the site live tomorrow. We will keep you updated as this progresses.

— Cryptopia Exchange (@Cryptopia_NZ) March 4, 2019

Will Cryptopia Users Be Reimbursed for Stolen Funds?
The relaunch of the exchange is highly anticipated among existing Cryptopia users, as it will give them more information pertaining to their tokens held on the exchange during the hack.

As previously reported by IIB, over 76,000 Cryptopia wallets were compromised by the hack, in which attackers obtained the private keys and withdrew millions of dollars worth of tokens.

A recent update by Cryptopia states that a read-only site for existing Cryptopia users will be live today, March 5. Per the update, existing users are urged to use the site to reset passwords and 2FA credentials to prepare for the live relaunch of the exchange.

The update also revealed that the read-only site will be showing user balances as of January 14, 2019, the date of the initial Cryptopia hack. In the same update, Cryptopia noted that their team is finalizing a rebate process for affected users and will provide updates when possible.

The read only site will be live today, it will show balances as at 14th Jan 2019. Please use this site to reset passwords and 2FA credentials. We are finalising a rebate process for affected users, more details to follow. Thank you for your support during the last few weeks.

— Cryptopia Exchange (@Cryptopia_NZ) March 4, 2019

Following the update seen in the tweet above, Cryptopia addressed concerned Cryptopia users, stating that the balances shown on the live read-only site are pre-hack, and will be used as a baseline for calculating customer rebates moving forward.

It appears that Cryptopia users are in luck, as their stolen funds will purportedly be fully reimbursed.

Update: The read-only site is now live. The holding balance from the 14th Jan is pre hack and we will be using these holdings as a baseline for calculating rebates moving forwards.

Do you think the Cryptopia exchange will relaunch on March 5, or will there be more unforeseen delays? Let us know what you think in the comment section below.

Cryptopia reopens, but investors in dark re hack

Christchurch-based cryptocurrency exchange Cryptopia has reopened, at least in a limited way.

But investors remain in the dark about whether they will get any of their stolen coins back.

Cryptocurrency experts have estimated that $23 million-worth of investors’ crypto coins could have been affected by the Jan. 14 hack, though the company has said only that in a “worst case” scenario, 9.4 percent of total holdings have been stolen.

Late last week, Cryptopia tweeted that a “read only” site would be live on Monday. Yesterday afternoon, for the first time in almost two months, long-suffering investors could log into their accounts.

However, the company warned they will only show balances as at Jan. 14, before the hack.

Cryptocurrency and tax specialist Campbell Pentney from law firm Bell Gully says users will be able to access their accounts, but no one will be able to transact or withdraw.

“But it’s positive that those using the exchange will be able to see their accounts and trading history. Many users will have upcoming tax obligations - for example, the New Zealand tax year is nearly at an end and many overseas investors may have tax returns due - and investors will want adequate records to establish their tax position.”

However, as the site reopened several investors reported problems logging in, and others were frustrated at the continuing uncertainty.

“How do we know if we have lost our coins if it's pre-hack?” an investor called TronDogs tweeted.

“When will trading and withdrawal come back?" Wang Qi asked. "I hope it's not another two months waiting.”

No one from Cryptopia has been available for comment since the hack, despite police telling investors and media they should address questions to company executives.

Founders Rob Dawson and Adam Clark have not fronted up to investors who are worried about what’s lost and what might be recoverable.

“We are finalising a rebate process for affected users, more details to follow, Thank you for your support during the last few weeks,” was all the company said in yesterday's tweet.

“What is this ‘rebate’? Do we get our whole balance back?” investor Mohamad El Hout asked.

Tim Doyle, director of AgBiz Accountants, says some of his clients have been frustrated by being unable to log in to Cryptopia and access their trading history or know what coins remain on Cryptopia.

He welcomed the reopening of the exchange.

“To write off any Cryptopia coins, it would be prudent to ensure that they will not be recovered. Having the exchange reopen before 31 March should provide certainty for their 2019 tax returns and allow traders to write off any hacked coins for tax purposes.”

However, the basic concerns remain, Doyle says.

“There is still uncertainty to what the final outcome is for the hacked coins - for example what does 9.4 percent loss mean for each specific individual?”

HACKED CRYPTOPIA RESUMES WITH READ-ONLY WEBSITE

Cryptopia has announced that its read-only website is now live. The New Zealand-based cryptocurrency exchange platform suffered a hack back in mid-January, leading to the theft of about nine percent of the company’s funds.

CRYPTOPIA WEBSITE SHOWING PRE-HACK BALANCES
In a tweet published on Tuesday (March 5, 2019), Cryptopia announced that its read-only site is now online. According to the tweet, customers can view their pre-hack balances, which the company says it will use as “a baseline” for reimbursing those affected by the hack.

Update: The read-only site is now live. The holding balance from the 14th Jan is pre hack and we will be using these holdings as a baseline for calculating rebates moving forwards.

— Cryptopia Exchange (@Cryptopia_NZ) March 5, 2019

On Monday (March 4, 2019), the New Zealand-based Cryptopia had announced that customers might also use the read-only website to reset their two-factor authentication (2-FA) credentials and account passwords. The read-only site was initially supposed to go live on Sunday (March 3, 2019) but was pushed back due to some technical issues.

Based on previous statements released by the company, the launch of the read-only website also gives users the opportunity to monitor the company’s progress on securing its wallets. At the back-end of February 2019, Cryptopia revealed that it was in the process of transitioning its wallets to new secure servers.

After the first hack, Bitcoinist reported that the hackers resumed their attack. Some users, unbeknownst to them, continued to have funds deposited in wallets already under the control of the hackers. Cryptopia even alerted its customers back in February 2019 not to deposit funds into any old platform address.

REBATE PROCESS IMMINENT
The cryptocurrency exchange also announced there it would refund customers affected in the hack. The first attack saw the loss of more than $16 million worth of ETH tokens stolen. In the second attack, the hackers siphoned a further $180,000 in the second attack that occurred 15 days later.

Back in February 2019, Bitcoinist revealed that the hackers had been able to liquidate $3.2 million of the stolen cryptocurrency. In total, the company also said the attacks resulted in the loss of about 9.4 percent of all total funds.

The Cryptopia hack was the first in 2019 and once again stoked the flames of the debate concerning the most secure means of storing cryptocurrencies. In 2018, hackers stole almost $1 billion from cryptocurrency exchange platforms across the globe.

Cryptopia Website Goes Live After Slight Delay, User Balances Held from Pre-Hack State

Recently hacked crypto exchange Cryptopia has relaunched its website in a read only format, along with resuming user balances to its pre-hacked state, the exchange tweeted on March 5.

Following last week’s announcement of a March 4 launch date, Cryptopia has slightly delayed the relaunch by providing the live website on Tuesday, March 5, one day later.

In the latest series of tweets, Cryptopia confirmed it will be using customers’ balances held from Jan. 14 as a basis for further calculating rebates.

The exchange reported that they are finalizing a rebate process for affected users, planning to release more details soon. For now, Cryptopia recommended that customers reset their passwords and two-factor authentication credentials.

Following a $16 million hack in mid-January, Cryptopia had still remained in maintenance mode after the New Zealand Police reported that the exchange was ready to resume operations on Feb. 13. Responding to the news, Cryptoptia explained that it was not able to resume trading until the exchange can fully identify their losses and ensure that the balance is completely secure.

After the initial reports of the hack in the middle of January, further evidence surfaced that hackers were siphoning crypto out of the exchange as late as two weeks later.

In other exchange vulnerability news, on March 3, Ryo (RYO), a crypto project derived from Monero (XMR), published a post alleging that a bug in Monero wallet software could enable fake deposits to crypto exchanges. The described vulnerability, which is set to be patched in an upcoming release, could potentially allow hackers to fake a deposit of arbitrary amount of XMR to an exchange.

Cryptopia about to reopen web site as 'read only'

Cryptopia, the Christchurch-based cryptocurrency exchange closed down for a police investigation into a $23 million theft, will reopen as a "read only" web site.

Director Peter Dawson said the company would announce on Twitter that the Cryptopia web site was resuming so people could check their accounts.

"People will be able to see their balance. It's our objective to secure every client's assets as quickly as we can. I can't make any comment on what the police are doing."

Recent Cryptopia tweets said the exchange would reopen on March 4, but it never happened.

Dawson, whose son Rob Dawson was a founder of Cryptopia, had some personal fallout when another member of his local RSA requested that he stand down from his role as president until the police probe was completed.

Dawson said he didn't appreciate that his personal integrity had been questioned.
A company source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said 40 staff had been retained on full pay while the six-week police probe was under way, and management roles had been restructured.

But he questioned whether the reputational damage had been too much for trading to resume.

The most well known cryptocurrency is Bitcoin, which crashed last year from highs of US$20,000 to US$3700 with various analysts predicting a rebound. Cryptopia offered the largest trading volumes of alternative digital coins.

Several investors have expressed frustration about the lack of communication from Cryptopia.

US punter Leonard Dodd said he had about $2400 invested in alternative digital coin Electroneum.

He had been unable to access his account to find out if his investment had been stolen.

"They really messed me up to be honest. The distrust is huge now," Dodd said.

Meanwhile, a Financial Markets Authority spokesman said the police had contacted it and the FMA had offered any assistance it could.

"The FMA does not regulate Cryptopia or the cryptocurrencies that it trades, but those providing a financial service related to cryptocurrencies need to register on the Financial Services Providers Register – which enables customers to access an independent dispute resolution service."

The FMA published guidance on cryptocurrencies in 2017 and highlighted the problem of cyber-crime.

"The FMA has received complaints about Cryptopia in the past and these were either forwarded onto the dispute resolution service or the FMA explained to Cryptopia customers the process for making a complaint to the dispute resolution service.

"We also engaged with the dispute resolution service and with Cryptopia directly to understand how those complaints were being handled," the FMA said.

Title: Hacked Cryptopia investors in the dark over 'rebate'

Hacked Cryptopia investors in the dark over 'rebate'

Hacked Christchurch-based cryptocurrency exchange Cryptopia will give a "rebate" to investors who lost funds. But details are sketchy.

And a decision to refund people who lost currency using the NZ dollar price on the day of the hack, January 14, will be controversial, given the big hikes in cryptocurrency values over the last month.

Cryptocurrency experts have estimated that $23 million-worth of investors' crypto coins were stolen when a hacker or hackers broke into the Christchurch exchange.

Cryptopia has been working with New Zealand Police to try to work out who the hacker is and where the cryptocurrency has gone, but investors have been frustrated by the lack of information.

On March 18, two months after the heist, Cryptopia emailed investors with details of "a rebate for customers who unfortunately lost funds".

"We are working through the logistics of this to ensure it is equitable and in compliance with local laws," Cryptopia's co-founder Rob (Hex) Dawson said.

Cryptocurrency and tax specialist Campbell Pentney from law firm Bell Gully says while the proposed rebate is likely to be welcomed by the market as a positive step towards the planned restoration of the exchange, investors are still waiting for details.

"In particular whether they can expect a full refund, how losses will be calculated and whether refunds will be made instantly or over time by way of a fee-sharing arrangement.

In his email last month, Cryptopia's Dawson said the company would be providing more details "shortly" about the rebates and the projected dates for trading to be active again.

"Please be aware we are hoping to achieve this by the end of the month," Dawson said.

However that date, March 31, has come and gone, and with it the end of the tax year.

Pentney says one key concern will be whether investors can obtain tax refunds for their "lost" tokens.

"The challenge here is that this requires a degree of certainty that the funds are absolutely lost and the portion that is missing. One positive step is that traders can now reclaim their trading records which are vital for tax purposes."

To add insult to injury for Cryptopia investors, Cryptopia will set the value of the rebate using what each currency was worth on January 14, the date of the hack. But the last month has been a boom time for cryptocurrencies, particularly the less well-known ones.

"The first quarter of 2019 was a breath of fresh air for the cryptocurrency market, having recorded its first quarterly increase in overall network valuations since the fourth quarter of 2017," journalist Sam Ouimet wrote on the Coindesk blockchain news site this week.

"Interestingly, however, bitcoin is among the least significant price gainers so far this year... This means a sizable portion of the market's recent growth came from the many other cryptocurrencies trading on exchanges today."

Some small or medium cap cryptocurrencies doubled or tripled in value in March, Ouimet said.

Cryptopia traded a wide range of currencies, and was a significant trading platform for some smaller cryptocurrencies.

A list of tokens stolen from Cryptopia in the January hack names 98 currencies. Most are relatively obscure and trade at just a few cents, or fractions of a cent. However they add up to a total Cryptopia loss of US$15.9m.

Some Cryptopia investors will also be unhappy about an announcement that they won't get back any money they might have accidentally put into the exchange after the hack. Some investors, unaware of the site had been closed down, continued to put money into Cryptopia.

"Any users who sent deposits more than 24 hours after we announced the security breach will not have their deposits recovered," Cryptopia says.

"We do not have a deadline for when we will be recovering transactions sent before this cutoff, and any deposits that we recover will be subject to the same haircut that has already been applied to our users."

Meanwhile, in a bizarre twist to the story, an Estonian-based company whose cryptocurrency Mothership was one of the less-well-known ones traded on the Cryptopia exchange, has received half of its stolen tokens back.

Mothership said in a blog that it had been contacted anonymously by someone who claimed to have stolen the private keys to the Mothership currency from the original Cryptopia hacker.

That possible hacker of the hacker then shared the private keys with Mothership, which was able to get back 16.8 million Mothership tokens.

An estimated 32 million were stolen, worth around US$880,000 as of January 19, meaning just over 50 per cent has been returned.

Pentney suggests the return of the tokens might have been a way to re-introduce some liquidity into the market so the hacker, or others, could trade the remaining 50 per cent.

"Mothership relied on Cryptopia for trading volume and, since the attack, it is no longer tradeable - it now has a miniscule volume on a single obscure exchange. Mothership responded by proposing a token "swap" for existing holders, which would render the previous mothership tokens useless.

"It may be that half the tokens were returned in order to revive the project, which would allow anyone holding those previous tokens to sell in the future. This may have partially worked as already the token swap is on hold."

Mothership spokeswoman Linh Le says her company is working with Cryptopia and the police to sort how to get the retrieved 16.8m Mothership tokens back to their legitimate owners.

"At the same time we have received new information about the Cryptopia hacker(s) and are actively continuing to investigate our leads on them. We are cooperating with the New Zealand Police and Cryptopia to aid bringing the culprits to justice."

Trading while insolvent.

(Which is what I said months ago)

PANIC !!!

Quote
David Ruscoe and Russell Moore from Grant Thornton New Zealand were yesterday appointed liquidators of Cryptopia Limited, a New Zealand cryptocurrency exchange based in Christchurch.

The highly publicised hack of Cryptopia’s exchange in January 2019 had a severe impact on the company’s trade. Despite the efforts of management to reduce cost and return the business to profitability, it was decided the appointment of liquidators was in the best interests of customers, staff and other stakeholders.

The liquidators are focused on securing the assets for the benefit of all stakeholders. While this process and investigations take place, trading on the exchange is suspended.

“We realise Cryptopia’s customers will want to have this matter resolved as soon as possible. We will conduct a thorough investigation, working with several different stakeholders including management and shareholders, to find the solution that is in the best interests of customers and stakeholders,” says David Ruscoe.

“Given the complexities involved we expect the investigation to take months rather than weeks.”

The liquidators are also working with independent experts and the relevant authorities with regards to the company’s obligations.

Grant Thornton will be contacting all customers and suppliers about its appointment in the next few days.

An initial report will be available on the New Zealand Companies Office website next week. No further comment will be made until more information is available.

here is in a version of the story of cryptopia from deve him self hex. I do belive him very much ty to his exchange i know all abuot crypto, i lost alot that crytopia die, that ok. but is not ok that bad guys win they take every thing from us now all we can do is let the world know this story, and hope for better. so guys plz read this story. ** is long but is real

Around January 2014 Adam and I started working on a project as a hobby called Cryptopia which was a website for Crypto enthusiasts including an exchange, mining pools, forums and other features. After the project started to materialize into something starting to resemble a finished product we incorporated the company Cryptopia in July 2014. In December 2014 when we thought we were ready we launched the website live into production. For the next few years we spent all of our free time working on Cryptopia and in 2015 I resigned from my full time job to keep working on Cryptopia while Adam continued at his job and working on Cryptopia in his spare time.

After I had burned through all my savings I needed to look at finding another job, Adam was currently working as a Developer for Intranel. Adam got me an interview at his work, but the day of the interview I instead went to see my parents and told them that I didn't know what I was asking them for but I felt like if I had to go back to working a regular job it was going to kill me. My parents took out $45,000 from their retirement fund to buy shares in the company so that Adam and I could use it to continue to work on Cryptopia.

Adam resigned from Intranel, but they said they didn't want to lose him and wanted to keep an eye on us so they offered a room in their office for rent, which we would pay for by Adam doing sprint code work for Intranel, and when they didn't have work for them they charged us cash. Intranel showed an interest very early on but Adam and I felt that we were handling things just fine on our own for the size we were and the work we were doing and didn't see any need to get them involved.

Intranel continued to show an interest in us, and after the beginning of 2017 when things really started to kick off and we started experiencing exponential growth at a scary pace we started to take Intranel's offers more seriously as neither of us identified ourselves as business men and only wanted to continue doing the development and innovation work we were already doing.

Intranel made us an offer that for 20% the company they would handle all of the business management and development, things like helping hiring and managing staff, paying tax, lobbying for regulator guidance, all the "boring business stuff" and that they would contract us out 4 of their FTEs at a discounted rate while they helped us find and hire staff of our own.

Instead of hiring staff for us they hired staff for themselves and continued to contract them out to us at exorbitant rates even including the agreed upon 30% discount, and put their staff in key managerial positions to allow themselves degrees of autonomy without seeking shareholder or director consent. If and when shareholder and or director consent was ever sought for anything, if the response they got was "No" they would just ignore it anyway.

They immediately set to playing games of divide and conquer and playing he said she said trying to pit us against each other and split us up. They would come to one for a request, get a no, go to the other for a yes, and then play us off against each other. Once we were reliant on the work they were doing for us and the staff they were providing for us they turned around and said they wanted an extra 5% of the shares or they would leave us high and dry with our engagements. To further divide us they insisted that I make up the extra 5% because they thought Adam was worth more to the company than I was.

Adam reached a point of frustration where they were trying to manage him and the work he was doing and how he should do it that he got fed up and resigned. They told me I should take a holiday so I don't get burned out like Adam, while I was away they simply stopped paying me. Not formally dismissed, no change of contract, no nothing. Just stopped paying me, and when I came back they told me they had given away my desk and there physically wasn't room for me in the building anymore, and wouldn't let me back.

After being a shareholder for 1 month, without shareholder or director approval or consent they issued a dividend. Adam and I never received this dividend. They also gave to themselves the same amount proportionately they claimed to have given Adam and I even though we'd been there for years and they had been a shareholder for a month. Again, Adam and I never actually received the dividend they say they issued.

The reason they forced the extra 5% was because they needed the extra shares to be able to block any major transaction the company tried to undertake so that we could not achieve a 75% threshold. They also used their position to veto listing policies in place to maintain the companies integrity in order to list and trade on coins their friends had made.

They sought director consent to create a company in the UK to act as our support desk, which we told them we didn't want them to do. They did it anyway, created it under their own names personally, and then again without director or shareholder consent issued themselves a loan for approximately $300,000 from the company to them personally for "startup costs".

They took on clients using our name for projects we said we weren't interested in or capable of, they assured us they were handling that work for themselves and they were just using our name as partners, they then billed us for that work. They issued invoices from Cryptopia for themselves, approved and paid them. They bled money everywhere they could, we paid for tax on their staff's flu shots? We paid for taxes on christmas gifts to their staff and our company bought the gifts. Everything they were unable to take for themselves they pissed into the wind on needless expenses and luxuries the company could not afford and engagements that ultimately buried us.

They made deals to list coins for a fee in Bitcoin instead of in the exchanges native coin DOT, this had negative impacts on the DOT markets and the ecosystem built around DOT as well as deprived CEFS holders of the DOT they would have received from those listings had they gone through the normal listing process.

They also stripped out all of the functionality from the site that wasn't purely an "exchange", dismantling the eco system that had been built and cultivated around our original slogan of "Your one stop Crypto shop" and aims to be a blockchain services platform and turned it into something completely foreign to the site that had been the initial draw for users.

They tried to sell the company out from under us 3 separate times.

If they had not been removed in November the company would have been bankrupt in December, but we didn't find this out until after we removed them forcibly, no one had any idea the dire situation they had gotten the company into, or that it would not have been able to afford their own next invoice.

I believe the Hack was orchestrated to bury everything they have done, and was planned to happen before we removed them so that it could tidily explain the state they had gotten the company into. And then rushed after their plan was interrupted when they were forcibly removed from the company.

They are now partnered with ANZ a bank that refused Cryptopia banking services, and PWC a firm that was supposed to be providing Cryptopia counsel on various legal matters, working on projects Cryptopia was gearing up to work on.

Excuse me if i'm not posting a link, if it's the case delete my post and sorry, but with all these posts and adresses, not being english native speaker, i didn't get if there is an official email to write about a refund request as a simple user.
Thanks if you want to point this email adress out.

You have to mail to liquidation@cryptopia.co.nz if you want to write to them !
Thats the offical email now to contact cryptopia and the liquidators !

But this is not necessary, right? I haven't reached out to them. I mean, cryptopia is not asking all their clients to write them an email to recognize their claims, right? So far, after more than half a year since the hack happened, all I did was wait for them to issue an official statement with instructions to their users on how to receive the refund. So far, it has not arrived yet. Twitter is my only way to access to new updates regarding the liquidation.

Not an online article as such... but I received this email:

Quote
Dear Cryptopia Stakeholder,

You are being emailed as part of the Liquidation of Cryptopia Limited.

The liquidators have applied to the High Court of New Zealand for directions regarding the legal status of customer holdings and the ability to hold Cryptocurrency on trust. The Liquidators have asked the Court to appoint two Queen’s Counsel for these proceedings.

The Court has approved the Queen’s Counsel appointment and service of this order must be effected by the liquidators sending an email with a link to these proceedings for all potential trust beneficiaries and creditors that Cryptopia held email addresses for.

The Court orders and an update from the liquidators can be found at the link below:

Hey Timelord,

A message I posted here : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1669443.msg53600153#msg53600153

This is what one of my friend in Christchurch has written on the FB group we co-admin.
We are both in NZ, in Christchurch (headquarter of Cryptopia).

He does have connections with many crypto enthusiasts in NZ and I totally believe him when he told me that this was an accurate statement from a former employee of cryptopia.

He identity of the whistleblower will not be revealed, no need to ask.

Quote
Today marks the 1 Year Anniversary of the Cryptopia Hack that is one of the biggest Heists in New Zealand History.

There is alot more to this story that is yet to be investigated. An ex employee has approached me anonymously and asked me to post this summary of what is happening or more to the point NOT happening with the investigation.

Makes for some very interesting reading. NZ Police seem to be out of their depth on this one.
____________________________________________________________________
Today marks the one year anniversary of Cryptopia Exchange being hacked. Not a cool anniversary to celebrate, but definitely a reason to take a moment to reflect on the progress the NZ Police have made over this time....

Approximately $25 million dollars was stolen in an "alleged" hack from the exchange.
The Managers of Cryptopia at the time alerted NZ police who immediately took control of the Cryptopia offices with the permission of those Managers, and then refused to allow Cryptopia staff in (aside from those Managers). This allowed the hackers to continue to drain hot wallets with nobody qualified on the inside to stop this.
https://www.stuff.co.nz/…/cryptopia-breach-highlights-gaps-…
Once allowed back into the offices, Cryptopia begun their own investigation and found a wealth of information to aid the NZ Police in finding the hackers. This included;

- proof the hack originated in Christchurch
- Employees who were logged by security cameras and door access to have been in the office shortly before the hack begun, who had no business being in the office at that time and have never been questioned about why. (nb - said employees quickly left the company and are openly anti-cryptopia)
- the employee whose computer was used to access the hack.
(nb - not necessarily saying this employee was responsible, just that it was their log in and user details used in the hack, they have some serious questions to answer about who had access to their laptop considering they were close friends with ex-staff who are openly anti-cryptopia)

After providing the NZ Police this information, Cryptopia expected some possible arrests or at the very least, extensive questioning to happen imminently. Then the Mosque shootings happened. The NZ Police announced they were putting the Cryptopia investigation on hold. Totally fair enough! That was some serious shit in our little city. Except once that investigation seemed somewhat over, the NZ Police admitted that they still hadn't even looked at the evidence they had been given.
Returning after the hack, one of the founders uncovered evidence of embezzlement from a shareholder who had been running the company with the very same managers mentioned above who "discovered" the "alleged" hack, since at least January 2018. He has been very open about this, going to the NZ Police, the Serious Fraud Office, Grant Thorton and then the Media. Still nobody seems to care.
https://www.stuff.co.nz/…/cryptopia-boss-blames-former-shar…
So when are the NZ Police going to look at their evidence? THIS IS THE BIGGEST HEIST IN NEW ZEALAND HISTORY. It would seem if you want to get rich illegally, all you have to do is commit a White-collar crime, because nobody seems to care if you do that! Please note, I say "alleged" because I am a believer that based on the evidence this was an inside job. As an ex-employee of Cryptopia, some would say I am bias to this story or that story, so please note, I am not posting to promote conspiracy theories etc, just that I totally advocate for the police, the SFO, the IRD, the Liquidators, and ANYONE who has the power, to look at the evidence. That is the only way the truth is going to come out, conspiracy or not.

Fucking pathetic,  release the fucking coins, clients / users  are not creditors !

it seems to be. i'm pleasantly surprised! i would have thought they'd have gone the way of standard bankruptcy proceedings (like mt gox) where account holders are ranked behind other creditors.

under that scheme, account holders would only recover ~1/2 of their funds. they will probably recover closer to 80% or more this way.

Most likely because they "understand" that most of the cryptopia creditors are its holders...

Looks like the creditors are only going to get around half of their money back. Grant Thornton has just received confirmation from the NZ courts that the individual account holders are owed whatever is in their account balance, this wont be weighed up proportionally, customers will simply get back whatever they put in and the creditors will be the only ones to lose out.

It also appears that it was an inside job, since someone seemingly walked in with these keys and then walked out with all the money. The investigation into the source of the breach is still ongoing.

The funds stolen from Cryptopia transferred again

By Alfredo de Candia - 6 May 2020

As reported by Whale Alert, the funds stolen from Cryptopia have been moved. According to reports, over 5700 Ethereum (ETH) funds worth over $1 million have been moved.

About a dozen or so transactions of different amounts, between 450 and 2100 ETH, took place this morning, transferring the various funds to several additional addresses precisely in an attempt to lose the trail or prevent them from being tracked again.

In fact, the main purpose of moving the funds is to try to transfer them to new addresses, unmarked, in a quick way by exploiting some flaws of some exchanges in order to liquidate them.

It should be remembered that about 30 thousand ETH were stolen from Cryptopia and some of the funds were found in different accounts and platforms, while some were frozen and then returned to the exchange users.

In the meantime, a court ruling has established that those funds belong to the users who had an open wallet on Cryptopia, with the result that they cannot be used by the liquidator to pay any pending fees, but must be returned to their rightful owners.

Even if there are thefts and attacks in this sector, thanks to the blockchain it is possible to trace every movement, and depending on the speed, it is possible to communicate the addresses to the various platforms so the latter, as soon as they trace funds from those reported addresses, will freeze them and block them immediately. However, the criminals who are responsible for the theft usually send a few funds at a time to test if the address is already on the blacklist, and if it is not then they continue to launder these funds.

Only in a few cases, all the funds have been recovered thanks to agreements made with the criminals who perpetrated the attack, this was the case of the incident involving dForce that managed to recover as much as 25 million dollars.

In conclusion, always remember to never leave funds on exchanges or centralized platforms and check whether any protocols have passed the certifications and audits of their smart contracts, such as the services offered by Quantstamp.

Quote

Since the release of our Third report in June 2020, we have made further progress in the Liquidation and provide an update with an additional set of frequently asked questions.

Our main focus has been working to continue the development of a claims process that achieves the following objectives:
Process     Details
Claims registration    1. Allows the registration of account holders details and to make claims for their account balances
AML/CFT verification    2. Verifies account holders' identities to the necessary AML/CFT standard
Asset transfer    3. Instigates asset transfers to account holders

We expect the claims registration process to be open by the end of the year.

Our next statutory report is due for release December 2020 but we will update stakeholders further in the lead up to the launch of the claims process prior to this.
Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I get my coins back?

As outlined above once we have finalised the claims process the Liquidators will be in touch with coin holders via official channels around registering their claim. Coin holders will need to verify their account and identity through an online claims portal. Until the claims process has been completed the Liquidators cannot begin the repatriation process. Coins will only be returned to those who complete all of the above processes.

When can I get my coins back?

The expectation is the claims process will open by the end of the year with the AML to follow this. Once these two phases are complete, we expect the repatriation process to follow. It is important to note that:

We have to establish a claims process and cannot just open up the Cryptopia exchange: the exchange was hacked prior to the liquidation. With the source of the hack still not identified we cannot open up an exchange that has been compromised
We have to complete the reconciliation process: this includes re-establishing coins in a non-hacked environment and then reconciling coin balances to the customer database. With over 900,000 active customers and up to 900 different coins, this is not a quick process
We will likely need to go back to court to seek further directions in respect of the distribution process including AML requirements. As liquidators, we need to follow the laws in New Zealand and cannot just return coins to account holders without completing appropriate KYC procedures

Do I need to register my claim?

You will need to register your claim, however, at this point, we are not ready to receive account holder claims. We have recently agreed on a claims portal which we hope to launch by the end of 2020. We will advise account holders via registered Cryptopia email and our official channels when we are ready to receive account holder claims.

What does the Court decision mean?

The Court decision means that Cryptocurrency is ‘property’ and coins were held on express trust by Cryptopia. A separate trust exists for each type of cryptocurrency and they are beneficially owned by the account holders so will not form part of the pool of assets available to unsecured creditors.

The next steps now will be completing the reconciliation process to determine total customer holdings and finalising a distribution model for returning coins to beneficial owners. This process is being completed alongside the claims and KYC process mentioned above.

The Court has ruled that you are holding my coins, I demand that you return these to me immediately.

Whilst the Court ruling confirms that Cryptocurrencies were held on express trust, the process of returning these coins cannot begin immediately due to the incomplete reconciliation process, AML concerns, and various other legal guidance needed on numerous matters. The Liquidator has a duty to all beneficiaries of these trusts and so repatriation cannot begin until the reconciliation process is complete and the Liquidators are ready for claims from all beneficiaries.

Are you selling my coins to fund the Liquidation?

The Liquidation is currently being funded with company assets. Allocation of costs of returning account holders assets will be subject to further direction from the Court.

To clarify the account holders’ assets are not recorded in the Receipts and Payments statement, found in the Liquidator’s reports.

Will the return of my coins be in crypto or fiat?

The Court’s directions indicate repatriation of customer holdings is to be in crypto where possible. We will work through this and seek further directions as required.

    Will KYC be needed?

The KYC process cannot be avoided, as it is a legal requirement in New Zealand. Before returning crypto-assets we will correspond with customers within this claims process. Please note, customers who have previously completed the KYC process with Cryptopia will still need to go through the process set by us.

Why have you not replied to my email?

There were over 960,000 active account holders of Cryptopia. We cannot reply to individual email queries due to the sheer number of emails we receive and the time it would take to reply to all account holders’ queries. Please refer to the Grant Thornton New Zealand and Cryptopia websites and their respective social media channels for updates.

Can you tell me my account balance or provide a transaction report for taxation purposes?

At this stage, we are not able to confirm the underlying transactions or trade history that make up customer balances and therefore cannot communicate account balances to account holders at this time.

Can anyone else tell me my account balance?

We are the only ones with access to the customer database at the date of Liquidation. No one outside of the Liquidators has access to the customer database, nor should they be communicating any information about balances to account holders.

Anyone outside of the official communication channels pertaining to have access to this information or offering to tell account holders what balances are in their accounts is doing so without the Liquidators authority. Please be wary of any such approaches and note that any communications relating to the Liquidation will come from the official channels such as the Grant Thornton website, or the Grant Thornton and Cryptopia twitter accounts.

Will Cryptopia ask me for further funds?

No, we will not ask you to deposit any further crypto-assets or confirm account holders' details at this stage. The only direct point of contact will be made via the email address you used when you registered on the Cryptopia exchange.

Please take care to ensure that any communications asking you to deposit further funds are not scams.

Why can’t you simply re-open the exchange and allow account holders to withdraw their coins?

We cannot re-open the exchange to return account holders’ coins. The exchange was hacked and the source of the hack is still unknown and is still being investigated by the New Zealand Police. Because of the hack, we have had to re-secure all of the coins in a non-hacked environment prior to undertaking the reconciliation process (which had never been completed before). This is not a quick process but is necessary to ensure that coins are secure and that a further hack does not occur.

Because no detailed reconciliation process between the customer database and the crypto assets held in the exchange’s wallets was ever undertaken, we cannot confirm that account holders' coin balances will match the actual holdings for each coin.

    Will trading on Cryptopia resume?

No. The Company is in Liquidation so will not be re-opening for trading. Please do not deposit any funds into historic deposit addresses.

My crypto was not affected by the January hack, why can’t I withdraw them?

Because no detailed reconciliation process between the customer database and the crypto assets held in the exchange’s wallets was ever undertaken, we cannot confirm that account holders' coin balances will match the actual holdings for each coin.

A lot of people who have funds there were sure that they wouldn't get them back but it seems that hope, still dies last.
IMO that's very good news, even if we need to wait +1.5 years... ::)

This is not a discussion thread - it is a reference thread to cover the various online articles concerning Cryptopia - please follow the links in the OP for the main discussion thread. (Or, you could try reading some of these posts and your question *might* be answered)

Interesting development, but seems that it is unrelated to the "big" hack.

Thank you for providing this information - it would seem the "Cryptopia Rescue" is not a genuine thing and great care should be exercised by anyone being contacted by that organisation.

@condoras - please keep your post so that we can have as full a picture of what has transpired as possible.

Thanks.

@Timelord2067, maybe i'm adding 2 + 2 to get 5, but to me it sounded like 'Cryptopia Rescue' was a bunch of immature and impatient individuals who were more upset with Grant Thorton's fees charged for their efforts.

Received this via email a couple of hours ago:
https://talkimg.com/images/2023/11/15/zkWx8.png

Not sure if it is "legit" or not... ??? There does not appear to be any update on the Grant Thornton website (https://www.grantthornton.co.nz/cryptopia-limited/) regarding this "portal".

I contacted Grant Thornton directly to enquire as to whether they have indeed setup the "Claims Portal" (it links to a .cryptopia.co.nz domain) or if it is some third-party that is attempting to harvest user info/login details etc.

Will update when I receive a reply.

Same e-mail received as well. I make a step further with this and "sign-up" to see what is all about. I didn't take any pics (foolish of me) from the process but it's not worth mentioning this because is a "simple" signup. The only difference is that you have to accept a T&C informing that your credentials will be used for verifying you with your Cryptopia account. Since though this is not a discussion thread, I post my experience to Cryptopia's main thread. (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1669443.msg55779885#msg55779885)

@Timelord2067: Ofc I will. I also did the step further with them as well ("Cryptopia Rescue") and I can post pic(s) of what will anyone see, as well as what they "need" in order to...rescue our funds. Yes, they want a fee. I will edit my post later on with pic(s), if that's ok with you.

Thanks for that much data and help providing on this thread. I also lost my account on that exchange and yesterday one of the member gave me the link of this thread.

It is really bad to hear that the employee were involved in that hack from the exchange. They hurt us a lot.
