Scam ICO made away with millions in recent years.

I can think of a lot of things but the infamous Mt. Gox hack was, for me, the biggest crime made in the cryptoworld. Not only does it expose a lot of flaws and vulnerabilities of the then young cryptocurrency but it also projected the dangers of having to entrust one's funds into a centralized exchange/entity. The next in line would have to be Silk Road, which was operated supposedly by Ross Ulbricht, which, again, informed the world about the possible use of bitcoin in the criminal underworld due to its pseudo-anonymity, hard to trace transactions and its overall qualities which is pretty much helpful in remaining anonymous while transacting with other people.

The biggest crime in Crypto currencies are the fact that private centralized institutions hijacked the whole experiment and then caused all these problems. Satoshi did not want people to do P2P transactions via 3rd part centralized services, he wanted people to trade 1 on 1.

These centralized services used exploitable code and hackers and thieves quickly realized this and they targeted these vulnerabilities. So Bitcoin was not responsible for these hacks, but rather 3rd party <centralized> services with weak software.  >:(

But still the vulnerabilities have not been totally solve.

This is why I usually prefer completing my trades through P2P or OTC solutions when compared to transacting on exchanges. LocalBitcoins is my favorite solution in this aspect and it remains my preferred platform when compared to Binance, Bittrex etc.

But, there could be a civil case regarding on those hijacker stealing money from hijacking exchanges and wallets. Usually hijacking amounting to millions of hack crypto is already considered as biggest civil case because it is just like robbing a bank or more than that if the hijacker accumulate huge amount from it.

last year we had lots of coins that stole bitcoin's name and abused it to scam people out of millions of dollars. there were even some which were being sold to newbies as "bitcoin". you can see in technical support board how many victims bought what they thought was "bitcoin" and never received such thing in their wallets since it was actually a shitcoin stealing bitcoin's name.

otherwise the hacks and things like that happen. they are not big "crimes' in my opinion. they are not specific to this world either.

Actually in myetherwallet scam, I am one of the stupid bitcoiner that being scam. They sent an email as the same as the email of campaign manager at bounty asking for my info like KYC and asking my private keys.I thought it was legit because campaign manager was always sent an email update to me. So next day I found out that my coin  was stole. So I can say that scam is the biggest crime here in cryptocurrency.

I think as long as there are people who are evil and tries to scam and make easy money, they will be innovating all the way. It's just like a battle between Good and Evil, and there would never be a balance, at least for a long time. I have to agree that the centralized 3rd party service has broken the main purpose of the bitcoin/crypto creation but I cant deny that their existence as the third party helps bitcoin enthusiast to convert their bitcoin into fiat or into other coins easier than P2P transactions.

Hacks with exchanges takes place quite often, and those weren't that easy to overcome. When something gets value automatically people try to evade into it. This is how the increased attack over exchanges takes place. Those mentioned by Op were the hacks, when it comes to crime I came across a darkweb service where we can killa a person anonymously just paying in bitcoin and giving details regarding the person to be killed which is very bad.

The biggest crime? For me? Is that the more I find out about actual behaviours from users, the more I realise we really are far, far away from helpful adoption. Merchants accepting Bitcoin but not actually owning a Bitcoin wallet (because they're actually just using third-party processors like BitPay). Users thinking they own Bitcoin but all they have is an account at some online wallet where they paid the exchange money, and the exchange promises to send them Bitcoin if they ever withdraw it. Investors who call themselves adopters but have never spent a single satoshi outside an exchange.

Cryptocurrencies are widely used to sell drugs, guns and porn. There are even marketplaces around the  dark web. They are illegal and at the same time pretty popular. I'm sure that internet drug stores have a huge daily volume of BTC that is passing thru them. Those numbers could be even larger than we've seen on those crypto scam reports and at the same time there should be a lot of creepy stories from the dark web where Bitcoin was used as a source of payment.

For me, the biggest crime in cryptocurrency is "Altcoins". That was the step when other people changed the source code as they want and as a result bitcoin losses its participants. We can also see many scams and wrongdoings are mostly related to altcoins and not with bitcoin. As because bitcoin was less exposed to modification and altcoins are controlled by some individuals.

Yes, i agree that scam is the biggest crime in this market, millions of money are being scammed every year and if we continue to be like this them its hard for us to grow consistently. Your situation is normal for the scammers but its your fault to give your private keys, legit campaign will never ask for this one so keep this in your mind.

Remember that bitcoin savings and loan scam that happened a few years ago by that guy in Texas?  That has got to rank high up on the list of crimes, and the guy actually went to prison for it.

Gox is #1 in my mind and always will be.  Anywho, cryptocurrency naturally attracts scammers of every stripe given that the criminals are very hard to trace and for some reason the victims rarely go to the police when they get scammed.  Seasoned bitcointalk veterans know the steps that need to be taken to protect themselves (like escrow and not dealing with newbs), but it is the newcomers to crypto that are the most vulnerable.  Unfortunately many of them will have to learn the hard way.

The biggest crime in cryptocurrency are the forks. Doubling the original coin is a crime. It's like plagiarism but with the use of paraphrasing. I don't like the idea of having a forked coin. I treated all of them as shitcoins. Especially BSV. They literally fork a forked coin.

Right now it is not that big of a deal since Bitcoin's technology is close to being impregnable. I've read an article that Bitcoin is hacked at an early age or early development. If I can remember at that time someone found a backdoor the reason it is hacked. I don't remember what they have done but I think they doubled the number of supplies of Bitcoin in circulation. It was fixed and everything gets back to normal, for me that is the biggest crime of cryptocurrency. I guess the second was when Mt. Gox was hacked.

Interms of money that was lost I think its also MTGox but the biggest heist and a suspect pinned down I think it must be the crime of the people behind the Bitconnect project (BCC). BCC was one of the top project on CMC that made people think its really legit so they jump onto it.

Who works behind are very intelligent making things such clean and discreetly sucking people's money without any notice, there's no real concept a pure manipulative act where investors minds got diverted to the process of forking and make them fomo's to buy in only to realize that it's just a pumped and dumped projects.

We are always looking for cheap, bonus, free coin and so on. ICO's are making us fool. Scammers asking for private key for free token or airdrop coins, many stupid provide the private key. So we can say most of scam happening due to our stupidity and lazy behaviour

I would have said scam, but I realized it's still same with havking of ones account because it revolves around loss of funds and getting the victims frustrated and depressed.

I do agree that scammers with online investment scheme are one of the biggest crimes in terms of cryptocurrency. For example, bitconnect and onecoin they have bagged billions of dollars of money from thousands of people all over the world. If we compare it to hacking of big websites such as the hacking incident at Bitfinex, Mtgox and other exchanges these online investment schemes using cryptocurrency as a facade have already made tons of money compared to what has lost with the hacking of big exchanges.

if the exchange is hack they have been hacked , they are not scammed because they dont mean it to happen  .  hackers are just smart because any site that has a good security can still be bypass by them in the money of money  but hacking incident on exchanges is not the biggest crime in the world of cryptos . i heard alot of frauds and money laundering crimes before the that involves millions and billions of cryptos  .

Some of the things that you have written have happened due to the awareness and the naiveness of the users. For example, if someone invests in a Scam ICO it is only his fault and he is to be blamed for that. It is like they are feeding the scammers.
All the scamming and stealing attempts in the crypto community can be stopped if people start reading about how the ecosystem works, what to avoid etc and many of these risks will be eliminated.

I have never heard anything happen to myetherwallet and it was Etherdelta that was hacked. Also, phishing emails were sent to almost all bitcointalk users as the email database was leaked during a hack earlier. Hence, most users were affected but those that did not click on suspicious links had their wallets safe.

I can see your point but there is not any trust between two people that exchange value in 1 on 1.
We still need a protocol to be created and protect both of the actors in a transaction like this one. Otherwise, we will still be in this vicious cycle and will be in need for a 3rd party that would act as an escrow.

I think the biggest crimes in cryptocurrencies are centralized cryptocurrencies exchanges. They tend to pose potential risks for traders and those that entrust their funds with them.
