How is forum activity calculated?
Activity is calculated with the following formula:
Code:
activity = min(time * 14, posts)

Activity is increased by staying logged in or by posting and is updated every 30 minutes. There is a maximum of 14 activity points every 2 weeks.

Read this thread you will not say that you need to increase your activity. There is actually no point increase activity of the activity made are not worth your and readers time.

The link from cissrawk should give you everything you need. However I don't think you should be focusing on activity. Presumably you want to increase your activity in order to rank up. You will discover that there are both activity and merit requirements for each rank, the pertinent part of cissrawk's link being the table below.

Increasing your activity is easy; just make some posts. Increasing your merit is somewhat more of a challenge, and in practice, for the vast majority of people (myself included), it is merit that is the gate to the next rank. In theory, if you make good, constructive posts that are valuable contributions to the thread, people will award you merit. There are numerous threads that advise on how to get merit, but they basically all paraphrase the above.

In addition to activity, everyone now has a merit score, and you need both a certain activity level and a certain merit score in order to reach higher member ranks. The required scores are:

RankRequired activityRequired merit
Brand new00
Newbie10
Jr Member301
Member6010
Full Member120100
Sr. Member240250
Hero Member480500
LegendaryRandom in the range 775-10301000

You get merit points when someone sends you some for one of your posts. Additionally, when someone sends you merit points, half of those points can be sent by you to other people.

Just log in every day or even make a post once that's enough for you to gain activity until the next update every two weeks. Way back just getting enough activity makes your account ranked up but introducing merit it changes the pace.

Uhm, I think I just saw a small inadvertence here. Activity is not increased by staying logged in. Only by posting.

It is updated every ~30 minutes, but you can see (benefit) of that kind of update only if you have latent activity points (meaning, for example: if you posted only once in an activity period (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/0/d/12saLhlUoqIdairxzuSPu6EYGrt7FN2lOstO1yDjCEbA/htmlview), you have 13 latent activity points; if you post again in another activity period, you'll see your activity updating almost instantly). Otherwise, if you don't have any latent activity point, your activity will update only at the end of the current activity period - which is after 14 days (the activity periods cand be found in the link above).

You can read more details about the activity (but also merit) system here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2766177.0.

If the above statement is incorrect, I kindly ask other members to correct me.

That's right. The proof is that if you post only once in an activity period, if 1 year in the future you come back and delete that post, your activity potential (maximum activity) will drop by 14 points. You have to post at least once to make use of the 14 extra points from that period.

It is updated every ~30 minutes, -snip-

There is also another mistake in that statement.
Activity is updated every hour, not every 30 minutes.

Below is the post made by theymos a long time ago about activity.

Activity is updated every hour.
