Title: [April Fools] This better not be what I think it is...
Post by: Foxpup on April 01, 2020, 12:51:26 AM
Did the OP's name always look like this?

https://i.imgur.com/gwqg7CF.png

In his profile it appears as palle11.
It appears to be spreading (like some sort of contagion?) to other (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=463354) users (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=919511) they've had contact with. I thought we agreed such jokes would be in poor taste. :(

@theymos, please tell me I'm mistaken.

Jokes like that don't age well even if you happen to be a fan of making fun of hurricane, pandemic, or plane crash victims.

But hey, it's his site, we're free to not use it for 24 hours (or ever) if we disagree.

Is theymos describing the current situation? It seems like a virus spread, and it makes sense to have a correlation with COVID-19 infection.
If he decides to do that thing for April 1, I can understand the reason. He probably wants to show empathy towards the virus disaster happening now. Well, it is very reasonable on the basis of humanity and brotherhood.

>Respect for theymos!  :)

I see it more of a warning than a prank. A reminder of how contagious the virus is and how fast it spreads.

A lot of people are suffering because of the pandemic, probably the majority of the world is living in fear of coronavirus, and it is being used as an excuse to take away people's rights, in some cases more than enough that is necessary to temporarily protect citizens from the pandemic, including in the free world, and there is a good chance a lot of people will not be getting these freedoms back after the pandemic is over.

Apparently it's a selective virus.  Foxpup and khaled0111 are infected, so far everyone else in this thread is safe symptom free.

Queue the threads on moderation favoritism...   :-\

Maybe we are supposed to figure out how it spreads?  Do you need to post in a thread of an infected person?

Not that funny.. but I guess theymos wanted to relate to current events.. *shrug*. If this is supposed to be an april fools joke, I don't get it. Seems more like april fools mocking.

Is it being spread by quoting people, linking to their posts, linking to their profile?  Lol I'm scared, I want to avoid the contagion.

I think the OP of the thread about April Fools that was started on March 1 (I'm not touching it) was case zero.  I posted in that thread, but I didn't quote anyone.

Dunno. Let me know when you have a clear clue related to the way of its spread. I want to be the last one who is not infected by this new kind of virus.  :D

I posted in that thread, but I didn't quote anyone.
You are lucky not infected by the "BTT April virus".  :D
Once you are infected, you may need a self-quarantine. It will prevent the contagion or virus spread among BTT users.  :D

My guess is there is a delay between whatever causes it to “spread” and it actually showing.

On one hand, this will put the important of social distancing on display, however I still believe it is in poor taste.

I wasn't at first; I must have caught it from khaled0111. That confirms it; theymos apparently thinks it's funny to joke about a disease outbreak that (by my guesstimate) will probably directly kill at least a million people and sicken tens or hundreds of millions, and indirectly kill or sicken millions more who have unrelated illnesses that will be left untreated due to medical facilities being overloaded. Many if not most of the survivors will personally know someone who was affected, some will know the pain of losing a loved one and not be allowed to hold a proper funeral due to quarantines, and all will face a grim future filled with new social, economic, and political problems. I'm not entirely sure what's so funny about that, but I guess that's why I'm not a comedian. :-\

Maybe theymos had an educational message embedded in his practical joke, but it is a practical joke above anything else.  I agree it's unfortunate that some find humor in tragedy, and obviously being right in the midst of it this comes off as insensitive.

I get it, though.  Some will always turn to humor to cope with fear, uncertainty, concern, cabin-fever...

I believe, as in the case of COVID 19, it will spread after some time if we quote the infected or the infected quotes our post. Not sure though, but it seems the only reasonable way.

Anyways, looks like a nice awareness campaign.

I don't take it as some sort of educational warning, theymos has recently stated people are overreacting (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5220206.msg54017323#msg54017323), so I find this educational warning nonsense a bit far fetched. It comes off to me as.. mocking. Mocking a situation that is killing many people and making a lot of people extremely ill is not funny, IMO.

Eh, I don't think it's going to make anyone take the pandemic any more or less seriously and I'm guessing theymos came up with some clever way that it spreads, which sounds fun.

They're doing something similiar on r/memes:
https://www.reddit.com/r/memes/comments/fky5cz/rmemes_memonavirus_community_event/

If you comment under someone that's infected there's a 1% chance you'll get infected.  If you get infected there's a 3% chance you get banned.

I'm curious how this spreads
-quoting?
-sending or receiving merit?
-participating in a topic where one is infected?

Maybe a random chance of the above?

As for the joke itself...cough cough....

No you can't... It's only possible when you did both... Merit someone whose already been infected... Come on now you users,... Lets me share to you, Break Your Life With Merits! ✌️😂

Quoting an infected person.

So the best thing not getting infected quoted using "Insert Quote", a manual quote without directly quoting to the message just be the same as using a glove to avoid getting infected directly to the hand went you doing the social activity with the infected person xD.

Edit: Try testing sending merits xD.

I'd rather stay prevented with my nose mask on and my hand sanitizer in close proximity. I'm also practicing social distancing by leaving a reasonable distance between your quote and my reply.

Seems I'm immune, done all three but I'm still healthy 😁.
From what I notice, it also has a time delay before you get infected. Maybe atleast 15minutes after you feel the symptoms of forum coughing and sneezing then comes after that the viral forum flu. 🤣

I'd rather stay prevented with my nose mask on and my hand sanitizer in close proximity. I'm also practicing social distancing by leaving a reasonable distance between your quote and my reply.
Simply you cannot,... The Virus will get to you because like Covid you really can't protect yourself with just that 😂 it will spread as fast as it can!

I don't think it's just sending merits as suchmoon would have already been infected from foxpup, ...f* it sounds so... >:( , that's why I think even if you do some of the actions it's only a probability of getting it, not certain.

Would be good, if the infected person got some warning message to their account? The warning can be like "Banned Warning" but with some statement like this:

"Your account has been infected with the virus, because of that your account now will be quarantine/lockdown from any activity to the forum for the next 24 hours"

That's would bring a lot of attention xD.

I guess all of those behaviours above are chances of infection but if it is truly right, not all contacted people will be infected and not all of infected will have symptoms. The symptoms also need a minimum window time to show. All of these are my assumptions, not theymos'.

I am in a chain of virus transmission already, so let's see what will happen with my account next hours.

Lastly, maybe the virus will dissappear tomorrow, I hope that as nearly same as I hope the pandemic will not reappear next year.

But hey, urgently! Please stop the spread of the virus, if you don't do this (by practicing social distancing on the forum), the whole forum will be locked down by the US. government, next 24 hours.

Please keep me away from it, I have asthma, diabetes, heart disease which appear to be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill with the virus.

Also, more veteran or higher level members should consider posting less today as old users are more vulnerable and could carry high risk.

#StayInYourOwnThread !

Guys, did you notice that the forum virus is not affecting nicknames only. Now it's affecting some post too!
Maybe by the end of the day, the whole forum will become totally unreadable.

Hope there will be enough ToiletPaper Tokens to wipe all this zalgo text  :-\

By the way, everything seems normal when browsing the forum as a guest.

I don't feel good.

Testing if l can infected by qouting..
No you can't... It's only possible when you did both... Merit someone whose already been infected... Come on now you users,... Lets me share to you, Break Your Life With Merits! ✌️😂
I have looked into it, and I am fairly confident your name will be displayed in a distorted manner if you are quoted by someone whose name is displayed in a distorted manner.

I don't think so, it's probably different for some users, I was quoted here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5236947.msg54133812#msg54133812) by JSRAW before Brainboss, Stompix and so on were quoted. In addition, DirewofM was quoted here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5236947.msg54133755#msg54133755) and still doesn't have his username in the distorted manner.

I can’t be infected. My wife and I had it in early Jan.

this is confirmed via tests.
As for funny  my wife’s has four cousins that are infected.

One is in a coma on a ventilator he has about a 60-40 shot at surviving it.

Since I have suffered through it along with my wife  I can tell you it is not fun to have.

oh my claim about my wife and I is in doubt. April fool.

my wife had pneumonia for three days in hospital. jan 13-16. No testing was done for,corona-v so who knows.

hah ha ha.

I ignore that image. I don't pay attention to that. But before that, I think my VGA got a crash. But then I realize that everything is okay, so I don't think too much about that.

Decentralized Corona virus is harder to treat since it's peer to peer and government can't trace or isolate it. Cheers!

Don't accept merits from op and the forum users that have unusual forum name or you will get infected too. So always think and keep a social distancing. It is very  contiagious and the most prone to the virus is from brand new rank to jr. member rank and from senior member  rank to legendary rank which doesn't have strong immune system and would likely to get infected.

I noticed that not all members on the forum effected by the virus on profile. Anyone can explain how to be infected?

Speaking of covid-19, always use disinfectant at home in any possibility of physical contact to kill the virus.

Lack of alcohol? Best alternative. It's 40% alcohol proof.

The American Government never picks a battle it can't easily beat... fighting the tail end of flu/cold season is the perfect invisible monster right before the summer months.  There is no way we can prove that the government had zero roll in stopping anything with their Unconstitutional actions or their silly "social distancing" nonsense.

I think this is perfect for April fools. *sneezes all over*  Terrorism or bad manners?  :-* ;D :D

And your grandparents... Don't forget them.

Children don't actually die from this virus or COVID-19, but people should still be SCARED and give up all their freedoms for the sake of their children anyways.

The source that kids don't actually die from COVID-19 (these are GLOBAL stats):  https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-age-sex-demographics/ (https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-age-sex-demographics/)

https://i.imgur.com/dIFzpOT.png

Basically, if you don't have multiple types of cancer or aren't already dying... you should stay home and eat soup.

Keep in mind these death %'s are way higher than the actual numbers because people who are under 65 or don't have major health problems aren't even supposed to get tested.

Who said that April fool can only be funny? We have a little idea about Theymos don't we? obviously, he's not joking.
what's wrong with using this event in an unconventional way since a lot of members are anticipating it. I would say probably he wanted to raise more awareness about this virus since, even at this stage of contagion, some people are still not taking the matter seriously. Personally, I like the initiative and support it, will try not to get infected.

While some could say bad taste, I'd say that it shows people what social distancing in real life can do for you. Ya never know what the other people at work did before, or who interacted with the other people at the dinner, etc. Just an interesting way to show how infectious and how destructive (imagine this part, site cant really show you) this disease really is

I like it. Thought I was freaking out or my computer was losing it when I saw it before though.

Jokes like that don't age well even if you happen to be a fan of making fun of hurricane, pandemic, or plane crash victims.
I don't look at this as making fun of the victims (and obviously I wouldn't like that). But making fun of the situation can lighten the mood a bit. And it actually contains a serious warning: social distancing is really needed.

Maybe we are supposed to figure out how it spreads?  Do you need to post in a thread of an infected person?
Quoting an infected user didn't get me infected. Maybe you need to be quoted by someone who's infected? That kinda makes sense: the ones who are contagious spread it.

Or, knowing theymos, it's probably based on a large mathematical formula with many different ways to get it. And I expect full statistics from theymos afterwards.

I get it, though.  Some will always turn to humor to cope with fear, uncertainty, concern, cabin-fever...
I prefer humor over fear, and I think we should be able to have a (bitter) laugh about almost anything. However:
Mocking a situation that is killing many people and making a lot of people extremely ill is not funny, IMO.
Mocking makes it less funny indeed.

How are you going to be infected by this forum's virus? Just wondering how he set this up?  :P
I believe, as in the case of COVID 19, it will spread after some time if we quote the infected or the infected quotes our post. Not sure though, but it seems the only reasonable way.

Anyways, looks like a nice awareness campaign.

It's not an awareness campaign if every single news station in the world is already talking about it, as well as google and social media sites displaying banners about it on their front pages, and most companies you know are sending you email related to this too. And if everyone is ordered to be in self-isolation anyway I don't think a practical joke by the forum will do anything to spread awareness.

News outlets even have to put an "Uplifting News" link because apparently this event is making thousands of people depresses.

By the way this "online virus" here is actually called ASCII art, some people find it trendy to put it on their usernames.

We should have a treatment about this virus

At this stage of the 'contagion' people who used to 'take it seriously', or at least try to make sense of the information/mis-information available, are seeing some seriously shady things and are starting to catch on.

Remember, the Smith-Mundt act was 'modernized' (to deal with the dastardly terrorists of course) a number of years ago now.  Lots and lots of shady stuff since then.

I'm trying to figure out what does "practice social distancing" mean in the context of this forum.

Based on my observations, it has nothing to do with putting s p a c e s  b e t w e e n  l e t t e r s, which makes sense because irl you don't protect yourself from being infected by talking like a retard. Rather you should avoid contacts with infected people.

I think the virus spreads through quoting posts of those infected, but I may be wrong, and it's possible that even posting in a thread like this one is enough to get you letters messed up.

We'll see. This is my first post today, and I will edit it several minutes later to report how I feel.

EDIT: It looks like I'm fine, but don't trust me, do your own research. Let's stop this virus spreading.

EDIT2(45 minutes later): Now, I'm infected, guys. I must say, I have no idea how this virus is spreading. Stay safe. Keep researching.

Apparently it's a selective virus.  Foxpup and khaled0111 are infected, so far everyone else in this thread is safe symptom free.

to be honest I feel like this April fools is not meant to be a joke but a reminder from theymos that the virus can spread quickly without practising social distancing and he only launch it today since a lot of people are expecting something to happen on April 1st in this forum.

No, I believe palle11 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1144359) is patient zero (no doubt selected by theymos for starting this thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5229603.msg53942102#msg53942102)). Those other two I found by looking through palle11's post history, thus raising my suspicions (before the official announcement) of a distasteful contagion joke.

I only now notice the "virus" changes posts too, and not just the title. I thought people made that on their own, but it's also in unedited posts.

Yes, the virus is way more serious than it looked like in the beginning. It doesn't affect only the "head", but the "body" too!

Im kinda disappointed. I was hoping the virus would hop to any person posting before/after an infected one.
Looks like we need to post here to get infected?

I thought my Local board was distant enough, and having only posted there so far this morning, I felt more at ease. Alas, being enclosed in very closed quarters (my local board) has proven to be futile.

Some countries do not seem to have a sweet spot for Coronavirus related jokes this year:

As more and more forum members are being infected, bitcointalk.org should be added to a "country infected list".
Has anyone made statistics already ? How many cases do we have right now? Is there at least 1 recovered? :)

I think there are not that much-infected members yet. Once we have enough members infected, we will get the attention by mods - They will then work on finding a cure (that will take months) We have to keep ourselves safe, Use some distance and try not to quote. Let's see how much time this virus takes to cure until then we can just sit and watch members get infected.

This 'joke' with online infection is gone too far, isn't it? When everyone is in panic despite they tryna not to show it, this one can make their day even worse.

It made my day even better. Gave me a smile. Personally, I think humour is a great tool to get through tragedy. People are free to have a cry about it though if they want, especially if it makes them feel better.

Nothing should be off the table to be joked about. Just because you make a joke about cancer or death or rape or paedophilia it doesn't mean you find those things funny, but jokes about them can be.

This 'joke' with online infection is gone too far, isn't it? When everyone is in panic despite they tryna not to show it, this one can make their day even worse.

Snap out of your psychosis.
I'm being realistic pal. Everyone rofled when it born in Wuhan. Everyone rofled when they locked the city down. Everyone rofled when there were news it is spreading over other cities, then countries. Now the whole world can't get out of their home and you are still rofling

What do you suggest we do? Stay at home in bed and cry whilst we plan our suicide notes? In times like these a sense of humour is the only thing keeping the light at the end of the tunnel from turning into a freight train coming straight at you. Personally I'll be at home having a laugh with people whilst the world crumbles instead of pointlessly crying about it and dwelling on what state the world is going to be when this thing is all over... if it even ever becomes 'over'.

If you are panicking about this then you are indeed psychotic.
Nobody's suggesting that panic is a reasonable response. We're just suggesting that millions of people are likely to die, which makes the topic Not Funny. That's all.

Millions die every year. Life is a cruel joke but a joke nevertheless, but are you saying we shouldn't joke about death? Tell that to this guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEXIEneoA20

You must self-quarrantine next 24 hours. If your account can self-recover, it will be fine. Tomorrow, if you still see your contaminated-username, it means you need to have intensive technical care. In the meantime, please practice social distancing.

That's not it. I didn't post here and got infected.

My only post after the virus was originated was this (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5236946.msg54134517#msg54134517) one, which got quoted by mk4 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5236946.msg54134713#msg54134713) (who was infected). So maybe that's how it spreads: someone needs to pass it to you by quoting you or maybe doing some other interactions with you (visiting profile, etc...?).

Then about the effect of the virus on each person who has been infected.

What's the criteria virus gives a greater effect for each user who has been infected. I see different users have different effects, example @Foxpup got infected early than @cabalism13 but went we see both of them @cabalism13 post more getting effect almost can't readable than @Foxpup.

I mean we talking the immune, did the amount merits and activity also one of the factors how fast the virus spread into the post xD.

I don't think that this joke is bad taste. Offcourse, this virus is serious and concerning thing. But I think that some positive is always good. I don't think that we should panic and some people overreact about it.
BTW, this thread is dangerous for me, because I don't have face mask or respirator :D.

to be honest I feel like this April fools is not meant to be a joke but a reminder from theymos that the virus can spread quickly without practising social distancing and he only launch it today since a lot of people are expecting something to happen on April 1st in this forum.

I agree with you. This is a joke that does not apply to the COVID-19 coronavirus, and is just a reminder. As far as I understand, the digital virus is spreading on the forum through quoting posts of "infected" members.

I intentionally decided not to practice social distancing and quoted your message, so maybe my account will be "infected" too. In any case, I wish good health to each member of the forum in real life.

YES that's right!
1) tomorrow morning all infected will be banned for 14 days.
the remaining users can use the board without any changes and there are also subforums which will be divided into small groups (50 people each) to limit a possible second wave of the pandemic.

2) those who are still not infected in a week will receive 50 Bitcoin Cash in their wallet.

3) and those who survive until the beginning of may will receive 500 merits + 666 (s)merits from theymos.

Is it being spread by quoting people, linking to their posts, linking to their profile?
That would be cool if true.  I noticed Vod is virus-free, as are you.  I was infected as soon as I looked at my profile this morning, so I never had a chance.  :)

1) tomorrow morning all infected will be banned for 14 days.
Mmm hmm.  I'll believe that when I see it.  Today is a day for not taking anything seriously, not even COVID-19.  Some folks think this is all in bad taste, but I disagree.  Laughing in the face of catastrophe is a sign of something resilient in your constitution (IMO).

This reply of mine is meant for hussein i mr 39 (username was intentionally changed).

You were infected too.
You lost those BCHs.
Sorry buddy. My virus is so contagious and so smart. You are infected even if you change the username.

Don't worry, you and along with all bitcointalk users will be cured tomorrow (2nd April) and this virus will only last for 24 hours.

I wished the covid-19 virus can also disappear quickly and easily and save the mankind.

The funniest part would be ...

If we wake up tomorrow and all those posts and threads will be deleted as of a part of APRIL FOOL. lol, I would like to see the face of everyone here.

In order to disinfect this I will be deleting all threads that I started with the self mod option.

I would think I can delete a few thousand posts of other people this way.

along with a few thousand of mine.

I will be starting here.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5091665.msg48988960#msg48988960

But you have some great content there. I do not think deleting those is necessary apart form that today we have a lot of useless posts just because of Theymo-Virus20 and I am pretty sure they will get deleted.

Yeah it was old  time to get rid of the old and in with the new.  It was helpful to do it as I listen to my wife still coughing 90 days after being released from the hospital with double pneumonia which may have or may not have been caused by corona-v.

While I don't like the joke I get it and it will help some.  I picked a thread that was locked and a bit out of date. I did not want to punish people if they are earning with their signature's in a current thread.  I personally feel better for having done it.

I think I will move on to my 9 alt coin threads.  They had over a million views and I truly love them. But I am in lock down here in New Jersey facing 30 more days of Fud. I believe deleting my favorite pride and joy threads may help me cope with what will happen over the next thirty days.  These 9 threads date back to 2016 they should be out of date and old so time to clear out the old and make space for the new.

I feel for you and I can totally understand your situation and the same happened to me in some way.

We are in lockdown as well but you must try to enjoy/take advantage of things that can cheer you up - I really hope that this lockdown ends sooner and we all get back to normal lives. This joke just gave smile to everyone, being lockdown for days then suddenly woke up and they all saw the virus and laugh or at least smiled.

Did you archive the threads before closed them?

Well, those threads could have helped you a lot seeing people getting help and really appreciating you.

I will pray for your wife.

Good luck.

No I am going the route of Zen and simply erasing them.  Most likely I won't be able to do it.

I am on thread 1 of the alt coin mining back in 2016 and it is sad to read and erase the posts. It is also sad to see inactive members posts that I used to blog back and forth with about gpu mining and builds. I am resolved to do the first thread. but I am pretty sure doing all nine will be too hard for me to do.

I am glad most of you enjoyed the online April Fool's pandemic. The only issue is that the database may have been corrupted and we might need to get used to this virus for a while longer. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0)

Seems a bit hard to get used to, but we'll get over it... I guess.

That confirms it; theymos apparently thinks it's funny to joke about a disease outbreak that (by my guesstimate) will probably directly kill at least a million people

::) If you choose to see-as-evil acts which were clearly done in the spirit of fun & good faith, then you're creating demons for your personal living hell...

There is a rare worldwide shared cultural experience going on in the form of the pandemic and the resulting unprecedented social distancing policies. It's similar to a world war in terms of its widespread cultural significance. So this little game came to my mind to connect with it. As with several past bitcointalk.org April Fools things, it's more of a new/weird/fun way for people to interact with the forum and generate discussion, not a joke as such. Certainly it wasn't meant to somehow poke fun at the many real tragedies created by the coronavirus situation; it was meant to connect with the huge thing dominating the minds/lives of basically everyone on Earth.

Coronavirus infected the Internet too. BitcoinTalk has the most casualties until now, stay home and wash your hands, if you use your computer, then download a hydro alcoholic solution picture and move the mouse cursor in it for 20 sec to make sure everything is OK  ::)

No need to logout, just start private mode in your browser and read whatever you want  :)

Edit: to continue with theymos' post above, personally I am only joking (today) about washing hands, keeping distance with others. In no way I, or people like me, is/are underestimate the disease which caused until now 40k deaths. We are just pissed off with confinement and try to have fun, better than getting a depression!

Thanks for the information. When I logged out I started to feel stuffy and my temperature jumped. After logging in, my symptoms stopped.
Mouse cursor and keyboard are disinfected every time I see COVID19 on the internet. im using 5-40% Alcohol and now i feel good 8)

Oh no, theymos just posted in this thread where there are infected people. Theymos have a higher chance to get infected by other forum members. Is there something that I don't know, maybe you have a vaccine already and corona virus won't infect anymore. Use ANTI-VIRUS LIKE AVAST, AVG, KASPERSKY TO SCAN AND REMOVE CORONA VIRUS.

LOL at the forum trolls (foxpup, suchmoon, ibminer, etc) being so sensitive to an April fools joke which also has some educational value. Some people can only see things as negative no matter the intent or value. It is them that are the true virus to this community.

Nice "inspect element" trolling. Kudos!

I found a medicine :) just log out to make the text clear.

This text virus is most likely linked with user session/login time so guests and private windows are not affected.

I understand the nervous reaction of some users (phillipma... hope all is good) but others are way too thin skinned for a public forum.
Overall I got to say... pretty inventive text glitching algo!

Need little quote  ;) I believe I have some common system and feels its spreading now  ;D

I missed the 2018 prank, registered only four days too late for that one.  I recall folks were still talking about it, though.  Last year's KYC thread and bitcointalk pencils for merit exchange was a real fun one.

I'm over this one, and can't wait for it to end.  In all honesty, I was over it last night (when it was still March for me.)  The infection is making hard to read posts, and although it was mildly humorous at first it's not stacking up to the previous pranks.

One of the best things about practical jokes is that they distract us from the stresses of life, and add a little spice to the mundane.  This joke seems to be provoking the concerns of those of us who have family or friends that have been affected by Covid-19.  And even those of us who haven't been directly affected, many have employment and financial concerns as a result.  Our lives have been turned upside down, and one of my favorite escapes is now infected.

Can we usher in April 2nd a little early this year?

Social distancing, avoid crowded places, stay away from places where you can get the virus easily, if you are infected and asked to stay at home don't listen to the silent voice in your head telling you to explore every inch in your town and wash your hands ;D

I mean, I think one of your favorite escapes from reality was already infected. I'm mostly a user of P&S, which could skew this, but I THINK 95 percent of all posts in that section have been about the Coronavirus, responses to the coronavirus from the Fed, Congress, Trump, etc. While this may have been a bit of an escape from reality, I don't think it was doing that much.

All that was being done here from Theymos was to try to teach people about social distancing. Don't think there's anything wrong with that. Trying to flatten the curve here through education.

@theymos, please open-source the forum virus tomorrow. :-)

Also, if it does not place too high a load on the forum’s servers, I suggest making it a feature which can be activated with a URL parameter so that those who find this amusing can track the spread of the virus in coming days.  We must track the spread of the virus!

/me has a refined sense d’humour noir.

As someone whose personal life has become a smoking wreck the past few weeks and is at high personal health risk from COVID-19, I must thank you for the laughs.  Much needed right now.

This will not be the end of the world, unless ovine talking apes collectively choose to make it so.

As I remarked in WO before I found this thread—though of course, obviously, I am reading into this my own opinions (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5233043.0) as I have stated repeatedly (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5220206.msg54049024#msg54049024):

I believe that I understand theymos’ point.

Lockdowns, unlimited government emergency powers, wrecking the economy, isolating ourselves from any human connection with each other:  We are doing all this, over coronavirus?

COVID-19 is bad.  But it is not Ebola, Black Death, or even smallpox.  So...  Seriously?

So this little game came to my mind to connect with it. As with several past bitcointalk.org April Fools things, it's more of a new/weird/fun way for people to interact with the forum and generate discussion, not a joke as such. Certainly it wasn't meant to somehow poke fun at the many real tragedies created by the coronavirus situation; it was meant to connect with the huge thing dominating the minds/lives of basically everyone on Earth.

As aforesaid, I read into it a serious message.  It did generate from me about as much serious discussion as I could bat out in a few lines.  What I did not read into it was any attempt to trivialize real-life tragedies; and I am not sure why anybody would take it that way, other than being overly sensitive.  Anyway...

I am dying to know the algorithm!

—Um, oops, “dying” was an inappropriate word here.  Hahah.

How did you avoid getting infected?

I had not posted in days.  And that was my first post in an active thread involving other people.  Before that, my only activity today was to create a new topic (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5237225.0).

Hint:

Quote
News: The virus is now s̴͜͠p̶̰͝r̷̰̅e̶̦̽a̵̼͂d̴͉̑ỉ̷̖n̸̙̏g̷̬͝ even online; practice social distancing!

I seem to have caught it now.  I just checked Satoshi’s last post (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2228.msg29479#msg29479), and noticed that he has not caught it.

I infer that the more you interact with others on the forum today, the worse your posts will be infected.

P.S., I still intend to reply to theymos (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5233043.msg54084821#msg54084821) and others when I have time and energy to spare for a suitable essay.  Meanwhile, mmmphf mmm mmmm MMMMPH.

He is already infected, please check again. Logically, he is unlikely to make an exception (immune). It will ruin the fairness & excitement of this special day.

I don't want to quote it because it will infected.
But finally, you are already infected, buddy. No problem, just enjoy what's happening today. I, myself, won't avoid the virus infection because it is the sensation for today. It will be over soon after the end of this day. Then, we probably miss it.

Just like old days.
Hashtag SocialGathering

From fear of loss of life, how much do we give up in loss of living?

In the old days, B.V., self-isolation, avoidance of socialization, and anything that could be called “social distancing” from fear of germs was considered an indicator of need for psychotherapy.

Don’t forget that in the old days, there was always a nonzero, actually not-insignificant risk of contracting nasty pathogens from ordinary social contact.  That risk still exists; it is drastically increased by COVID-19, but still exists quite apart from COVID-19.  If SARS-CoV-2 were to totally disappear tomorrow, then the risk would still exist.

There is a rare worldwide shared cultural experience going on in the form of the pandemic and the resulting unprecedented social distancing policies.

By the way...

I snapped off and YELLED at an elderly relative.  A month ago, he was terrified that he would die Any Day Now from the frailty and ill health of old age.  Now, he has declared that coronavirus is “The End of the World”—quote-unquote; his words.

There is indeed a high probability that he will now die of coronavirus, given his age and general state of health—that he will now die of coronavirus, instead of dying of whatever scared him a month ago, and two months ago, and six months ago...  [...]

Given the high risk to him, I do want for him to treasure whatever remaining days he may have—without being consumed by obsessive fear.  But that is not under my control.

I have elderly family members whom I now have not seen in several weeks.  They are now in strict isolation.  They may somehow catch COVID-19 anyway—or, because they are old and in poor health, they may drop dead any day from something else.  They and I may now be losing our last-ever opportunity to spend some cheerful quality time together.  Or any time together.  We may literally never see each other in person again, because of attempts to protect them from COVID-19.

It may be a reasonable trade-off.  Or maybe not.  Nobody is talking about this.  Nobody even dares to think about it.

In my own life, to protect myself, I am making some severe trade-offs.  But I am doing that consciously, coldly, without fear; and there are individuals whom I care about sufficiently that for my part, I would risk COVID-19 to spend some time with them if I could.  There are also faraway individuals whose actual illness with COVID-19 I would personally attend if I could, even if they were to cough all over me—even though that would be almost tantamount to a suicide mission for me.  Each trade-off must be weighed differently—consciously, coldly, without fear...

Thank you, theymos.

Dear readers of the forum:

Some of you will die from the coronavirus.  (—Some few of you:  The virus has low lethality except to the aged or otherwise frail.)  The virus may kill me, too; maybe, maybe not.  That is acceptable:  Life is risk, and death is a part of life.  My only sadness is that sometimes, the worst befalls the best of people.

What is unacceptable is panic, bureaucratic “do something!” tyranny, and worst of all, hybris.

Also and overall, cowardice.  Difficulty coping with the reality that life was never safe:  It is just more unsafe than it was B.V., and is actually being made much more unsafe by panic reactions.

One of the many things that's changing about our world.  It really is the end of the world as we know it.  We'll have to find viral-repellent coatings for all those metal rails and door knobs EVERYWHERE.  One bright spot to come out of all this, I'll never have to hug my sister-in-law again, woot woot!

But the hand shake is a big one.  The fist bump isn't much better, elbow bumps aren't my thing (aren't we supposed to cough in them now?)  I kind of like Iranian foot tap, but that requires being closer than 6 feet apart.  Will we ever be able to come into contact with other humans again?

Quotations intentionally re-arranged a bit:

Will we ever be able to come into contact with other humans again?

To some, that would be a feature and not a bug.  People who are perpetually fearful and socially isolated are psychologically pliable in the extreme.  It is a formula for mass demoralization—as if modern peoples were had not already been demoralized to the point that they would meekly accept almost anything!

It really is the end of the world as we know it.

Observe the effect on domestic livestock or zoo animals who are caged individually, and disallowed all social contact with their own kind.  Even those species which are ordinarily less social than humans tend to sicken and weaken in such conditions.

And I have not even begun to discuss the deeper effects of severe restrictions on personal movement...

But the hand shake is a big one.  The fist bump isn't much better, elbow bumps aren't my thing (aren't we supposed to cough in them now?)  I kind of like Iranian foot tap, but that requires being closer than 6 feet apart.

For ordinary social courtesies, East Asians have a good idea with bowing.

However, that does not solve the problem of people being locked down en masse, socially isolated, and psychologically deteriorating under a level of ironclad government control that is completely unprecedented in the West outside the formerly Communist-ruled countries of Europe.

This thread  has been deleted to show corona-v is not a joke to me.

April Fools.

not.

~

I felt what you were trying to do.

But With my wife and my wifes 4 cousins already sick And with one of them on a ventilator it felt saddening to me.

I do feel better having deleted the two threads 🧵 with 1000 plus posts on them.

I won’t be doing any others as multiple people have asked me to keep the alt coin mining threads 🧵 and the other difficulty threads.

I also realized that my actions of deleting my self modded threads 🧵 may be like a bunch of morons not cooperating with the lockdowns. so I will leave the other threads up.

wishing all of you luck in your lives with corona-v.

You just destroyed the personal work of many people who contributed to your threads in good faith, and who themselves did nothing whatsoever to cause you to take even unreasonable offence.

Depending on whether you had any real fans who posted frequently in your threads, you may even have knocked some people down a rank.

Furthermore, as you evidently did not pause to consider, if you really just mass-deleted so many posts, there is a statistical likelihood that you just trashed posts by somebody out there who is currently ill with COVID-19—and there is also a not insignificant probability that one or more authors of those posts will die of COVID-19, whereupon their bereaved families may come in search of online relics for their memories.  Thus, you are a hypocrite for pretending to even care about such things in any case but your own.

Your legitimate worry about ill family members, to whom I think that anybody here will wish a speedy recovery, does not entitle you to lash out and hit innocent bystanders over your reaction to a joke by the forum’s administrator.  You just shredded the collective hours of many people’s lives in a fit of grandstanding and virtue-signalling.

If I had ever contributed to any of your self-mod threads, I would be personally quite angry at you now.  As it is, I am relieved that you have no power to delete any of my posts.

And before you fire off some indignant reply at me, I warn you that you should NOT make any assumptions about the effects of COVID-19 on my own life.  Neither should you inquire about that:  It is none of your business, and will remain so.

I point that out only because I am effectually drawing fire here, whereas you thoughtlessly threw a tantrum without even reflecting on the fact that neither you nor I has, or should have any idea of what the real effect of COVID-19 is on theymos’ private life—let alone the lives of all the authors of those posts you just trashed.

For the record:  As one who does not generally contribute content to sites run by others, I myself have carefully considered very unlikely hypothetical scenarios in which I may mass-delete all my own posts here.  E.g., if I were to be administratively forbidden from red-tagging fork shills, I may decide to burn my own work and walk away.  (I did say, very unlikely hypothetical scenarios.)

Whereas if I were to leave the forum in anger at its administration, withdrawing thereby my own contributions, I would not take it into my own hands to destroy the work of people who had contributed to my self-moderated threads in good faith, in accord with my local rules, and sometimes even from sincere friendship toward me.  In this hypothetical, I may post a note encouraging people to follow my example.  But to trash others’ work myself in that circumstance would be self-centred, narcissistic, and downright treacherous of me.  I would not do that.

Wow.  Lots and lots of butt-hurt losers on this thread.

I cannot help but notice the correlation between the no-sense-of-humor having whiners and those who are enthusiasts of censorship and 'self-moderated' threads.

Also, interestingly, the ones who are pumping the covid-19 scam 24/7.  It's almost like they thought they could monopolize this forum to help with a project which was important to them or something.  Man-o-man are there some tears of rage shed when they don't get their way and information diverges from that provided by the mainstream media.

Please refrain on using me in your weak attempts to garner narcissistic supply.
My advice to you is: seek psychotherapy.

My advice to you is: quit acting like a bitch.

I fully realize narcissistic bullies, such as yourself, see compassion and empathy as being a "bitch" behavior... but hopefully one day you will be able to grow up... although, I also realize it's part of your mental disorder, so I'll try to be sympathetic to your condition.

There are real people with real suffering happening, and I don't think there was much educational value or humor involved here. The less serious it is made out to be.. by making a game or a joke out of it after recently posting people were overreacting, and downplaying it.. sends a bad message IMO. The more people that don't take it seriously, the more it will spread and increase the death rate and suffering of all those involved.

Don't get me wrong, I have a sense of humor, I've listened to several songs & parodies about the virus, and had a good laugh.. as a lot of them are actually funny.. and usually make some sort of point on stopping the spread or keeping yourself safe/sane... like the "stay the fuck at home (https://youtu.be/OogGCSovU3k)" song.  ;D

I just didn't see anything funny with this particular joke/game, so it came off as mocking, which doesn't feel right to me given the circumstances.

Look at the emphasis. You do not see is as such, but you need to know that other people may see it as such and also not think they are mocking because of different tastes in humour. A lot of people joke about the clown-state of the planet (much more than you think - and Covid is just a small example out of plenty). I think this is only fair!  :)

Apparently it's a selective virus.  Foxpup and khaled0111 are infected, so far everyone else in this thread is safe symptom free.

As I was bleeding to death I looked up at the paramedic and said "Oh god don't let your ugly ass face be the last thing I see", he had a good laugh and that is how I face adversity. If you can't look death in the eye and laugh thats your own weakness.

Don't let fear rule your life, if you do then your not living, your just existing.

If you have a wife  that was in the hospital with double pneumonia  and you have four cousins with it. It is and was a shitty joke.
My wife's cousin on the ventilator  has a 20% chance of surviving.
The other 3 cousins are getting back to normal.

Every night my wife has a 20 to 30 minute coughing fit. When she first lies down to sleep.
If lucky she wakes up in 2 or 3 hours has another 20-30 minute coughing fit.
Then in the morning one more 20-30 minute coughing fit. This is due to inflammation caused by the pneumonia.

My local hospital has 280 beds. In jan when my wife was treated for her pneumonia 215 of those beds were  filled with lung and upper respiratory illness. This hospital now is filled to the top and more then 10 have died from the disease.
My wife stays home  I go out 2 times a week once for food once for fedex drop offs and gasoline.

My wife is on steroids for her lungs  which make her subject to new infections. So I try to keep her safe.
Since we both got sick around Dec 26-28  which ended up with her in the hospital Jan 13-16  we simply don't know if we had the corona-v.
So the FUD is a bitch.  Since  the disease seems to be really hard on Italians and Spaniards and no one knows if there are genetic weaknesses to the disease both my wife and I worry more. As she is all Italian descent. Both here parents came here in the late 1940's.

I am a fan of humor and yeah  it is funny  until you get fucked hard by the subject.  So corona-v humor  does not play well for us.

Edit I do have a sense of humor even with my sick wife and my wife's cousins being ill. But it is more like

this: I just read this in serious discussion section of the forum.

I have watched a video from an anonymous page, and I wasn't able to remember the exact name of the page.
The Video explains that Because of  the recent installation of 5G Towers in Wuhan China was the reason why The Virus was Discovered
The Video Explains also, that 5g Towers with 60 ghz causes Respiratory Failure in other words NCOV or Covid-19.

Now, I would like to know if somebody here could Explain what Really Happens if, the News was Fake that the virus came from bat or was it because of the 5G networks.

and if ever could somebody explain what can 5G networks cause to our health, it would be a great Help.

Illuminate me.

P.S. The video I've watched recently was deleted by facebook, and Can't be search through any of Search Engine Applications.

God is tired of reading posts like this on bitcointalk.

So he or she is going to keep tossing viruses at us  until humans stop with the questions already.

Corona-V

or

Covid-19 is just the beginning.

Next one will be just as contagious but 2x as deadly.

Unless of course people stop posting these questions on bitcointalk's serious subject sub-forum.

God has personally told me this and I am asking Theymos to start a new subsection which would be How crazy can you be sub forum.

All mods would be instructed to move any and all topics to this section that are simply to crazy for god's tastes in subject matter.

Agreed, and in fact I've joked about my own seemingly imminent demise on far more occasions than I'd like. But there's a huge difference between making light of your own suffering vs the suffering of other people. The former is a healthy coping mechanism; the latter is just plain insensitive.

And before anyone tries to claim that we're all suffering as a result of the pandemic, and therefore we can all joke about it: if the worst you've had to face is running out of toilet paper, you're not really suffering, and if you think you are, you don't (yet) know the true meaning of the word.

Oh ya, to prove I'm even more credible doctor than Dr. Oileo I'll make the disclaimer that my comment should not be taken as medical advice.  Always consult your quack doctor and take all the meds he prescribes.

PSA:  Reject demoralization porn!
I will laugh at the virus, even if it kills me—
no, especially if it kills me.

As I was bleeding to death I looked up at the paramedic and said "Oh god don't let your ugly ass face be the last thing I see", he had a good laugh and that is how I face adversity. If you can't look death in the eye and laugh thats your own weakness.

LOL.

Quote from: Nietzsche (Also sprach Zarathustra)
I should only believe in a god that would know how to dance.

And when I saw my devil, I found him serious, thorough, profound, solemn: he was the spirit of gravity—through him all things fall.

Not by wrath, but by laughter, do we slay.  Come, let us slay the spirit of gravity!

Please refrain on using me in your weak attempts to garner narcissistic supply.
My advice to you is: seek psychotherapy.

I fully realize narcissistic bullies, such as yourself, see compassion and empathy as being a "bitch" behavior... but hopefully one day you will be able to grow up... although, I also realize it's part of your mental disorder, so I'll try to be sympathetic to your condition.

I have no truck with Mr Nasty.  Whereas you are yapping up the wrong tree with this insufferable preaching:  Your lecture on “compassion and empathy” is basically just a Jesus sermon, regardless of its being dressed up in modern liberal terminology.

As is well-known to the very few people who have taken the trouble to educate themselves in such matters, liberals are essentially second-century Christians in disguise.  Case in point:  Your determination to save his soul (L. psyche < Gk. ψυχή), and your simpering faux-sympathetic moralizing about the devil in him.  The Christian version of that lecture is that you will pray for him and his condition.  Surely, this will impress him with your virtue make him laugh and blow you off with another crude comment—but at least it makes you feel good, which is the important part.

For my part:

I have a profound admiration for the courage and stamina of people I know who actually contracted COVID-19, and have struggled to shrug it off with a smile despite feeling horribly sick, with immediate rational concerns about worse.  I am determined that if, despite my severe individual precautions, I myself were to contract COVID-19, I must follow their heroic example despite my pre-existing health condition, which makes the virus almost tantamount to a death sentence for me.  If I were to die of it, I would want for people to remember me not for the disease that killed me, but for whatever I may have achieved within the necessarily short span of my human lifetime.

I salute the front-line medical professionals who are calmly bathing themselves in a sea of the virus—without flinching, without complaint—with the calm, cold, rational scientific knowledge that due to the disease course often caused by high viral load, they may be tomorrow hooked up to the ventilators that they are hooking other people up to today.  I do hope that they have first dibs on those precious ventilators, for they are deliberately inflicting the virus on themselves to save the lives of total strangers who probably do not properly appreciate what they are doing.  Danger is their calling.

Whereas I have no patience for cowardice, a quality which by its nature is revealed by adversity, risk, and death.  Safety and prosperity do not reveal character.  This does.  Character is also not revealed by idle big talk from a position of comfortable theories.  Cold reality now says:  “Put up or shut up.”

The extreme negative reactions to theymos’ joke are symptomatic of a disease worse than the virus (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5233043.0):  The moral weakness of modern society, and of people who never would have survived the untold aeons of plagues, famines, wars, and other perpetual adversity that preceded the soft comfort and illusory safety of technocratic modern times.  You only exist because your ancestors long ago struggled for survival against risks and crises that really make COVID-19 look like a joke.

The Black Death is only one example:  A disease with high infectiousness like coronavirus, but which really did cut down even young, healthy people as a scythe fells stalks of wheat.  If the Black Death were to hit today, I think that modern moral weaklings would commit mass-suicide to try to avoid being killed by disease.  They are anyway doing something almost tantamount to that, over COVID-19.

There are real people with real suffering happening,

Yes, and this is reality:  Life is risk.  People die.

It is very sad.  But if you cannot cope with reality, then you are probably not a person who should be making Internet armchair diagnoses of the psychological condition of others.  You are lecturing others about “real people” from a world of fantasy.

And you are sitting on an Internet forum and making unwarranted assumptions about the need for moralistic lectures by the real people behind the screen names who are joking about the virus.  Do NOT make such assumptions.  You have no idea what real people are behind the screen names, and what real suffering may be kept private.

Boldface on the key phrases where the virtue-signalling metre pegged:
and I don't think there was much educational value or humor involved here. The less serious it is made out to be.. by making a game or a joke out of it after recently posting people were overreacting, and downplaying it.. sends a bad message IMO. The more people that don't take it seriously, the more it will spread and increase the death rate and suffering of all those involved.

Pure moralistic acid—virtue-signalling, in modern parlance.

You are deliberately trying to demoralize anybody who is not sufficiently panicked for your tastes.  It is you who are sending “a bad message”.

Whereas morale is critical to long-term survival, and also to having a world that is actually worth living in.

Don't get me wrong, I have a sense of humor, I've listened to several songs & parodies about the virus, and had a good laugh.. as a lot of them are actually funny.. and usually make some sort of point on stopping the spread or keeping yourself safe/sane... like the "stay the fuck at home (https://youtu.be/OogGCSovU3k)" song.  ;D

Oh, a “cower in your cages, bitches” song.  It is demoralization porn.  “safe/sane”?  No, not sane...

In the old days, B.V., self-isolation, avoidance of socialization, and anything that could be called “social distancing” from fear of germs was considered an indicator of need for psychotherapy.

...and ultimately not safe, either.

The nature of life is that you will be safe when you are dead.

Just in case Lauda’s post (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5236947.msg54143379#msg54143379) was TL;DR:

I just didn't see anything funny with this particular joke/game, so it came off as mocking, which doesn't feel right to me given the circumstances.

narcissistic bullies

Want to make Internet armchair diagnoses of others?  First, cure thyself.

And before anyone tries to claim that we're all suffering as a result of the pandemic, and therefore we can all joke about it: if the worst you've had to face is running out of toilet paper, you're not really suffering, and if you think you are, you don't (yet) know the true meaning of the word.

So, virtue is measured by suffering; and thus with suffering is accorded the moral right to speak freely and behave normally.  Where do I get a Foxpup official imprimatur of sufficient suffering to know “the true meaning of the word”?

What you just said is despicable.  Go stuff where it belongs (http://file:///dev/null) your unwarranted assumptions about Internet screen names whom you know nothing about.

For my part, I could give professional lessons on real-world suffering, physical hardship, and tragedy that NONE of the whiners on this thread can even imagine.  That is not an unwarranted assumption:  The public display of weakness is ipso facto evidence of having suffered insufficiently to be either killed by it, or hardened to it.  As would be known by one who has.

Protip:  “That which does not kill me, makes me stronger” is another Nietzsche aphorism, oft misapplied with a dose of saccharine glurge by witlings who are ignorant of its origin and meaning:

Quote from: Nietzsche (Twilight of the Idols, “Maxims and Missiles”, Aphorism 8 )
From life’s school of war.  —That which does not kill me, makes me stronger.

[Aus der Kriegsschule des Lebens. — Was mich nicht umbringt, macht mich stärker.]

It is the diametric opposite of this fetishization of suffering.

It is the forge-fire of a double-edged sword that cuts first against one’s own weaknesses of character, before swinging out against others.

(Nietzsche would know:  He lived for years with debilitating, torture-level chronic pain.)

If you're gonna go via corona, you'll most likely be heavily sedated hooked up to a machine for days or weeks before it happens.  No pain or stress.

But imagine having the person you're closest to put on a ventilator and quarantined.  Almost no updates.  You can't see them.  Could you still function while waiting for the phone to ring?

One of my neighbors is going through that right now while self quarantined by herself.  Sometimes demoralization just can't be rejected - at least temporarily.

More people need to learn and understand more about projecting (intentional or unintentional).

True.  Whereas here, the people who are arguing have such fundamental differences in their (mostly unexamined) premises that most of them cannot even understand that they are viewing others’ opinions through the lens of their own subjective mental models of the world.

There is a total difference of worldview between “safety first” people and “life is risk—live and die with courage” people.  To see across the impassable chasm between worldviews requires an objectivity that only rare philosophical minds even have the innate ability to acquire through the considerable study which, of course, also requires a will for such an undertaking.

There is absolutely no way to tell the state of the person based off of their reaction. For all they know, the mastermind behind this humorous joke, theymos, had COVID and barely survived it.

FYI (and I have no idea about the status of theymos’ family, which is none of my business):

People are panicking about this to an unbelievable extent. It's a bad disease, to be sure, and some precautions should be taken, but it's not worth putting the entire economy on hold. [...]

(I recently had all of the symptoms of the virus. I wonder if I had it, or if it was just the ordinary flu. It was very unpleasant, though I got over it in a few days.)

Point of the plot: If you do not like it, then ignore it. Do not in any way attack or demoralize those that do.

Kitty, you are mistaken about your “mistake”:

  • I have never seen you try to coerce anybody into enjoying your sense of humour, as if it were “universal”.
  • If ibminer, et al. disliked theymos’ sense of humour here, then they were perfectly free to ignore a day-long Internet forum joke without throwing self-righteous, pulpit-pounding public temper tantrums about it.

There is nothing comparable between your defence of theymos’ right to laugh...

Point of the plot: If you do not like it, then ignore it. Do not in any way attack or demoralize those that do.

...and others’ demands that everybody should just be huddling down in their homes cages wearing sackcloth and ashes right now.

I myself do go a big step further than I have seen you go:  I express my unlimited contempt for superannuated children, who are wont to kick and bite when the illusion of their safe nursery-world is invaded by cruel reality.  They are spreading panic which is actively harmful to the rest of us.

I condemn anybody and everybody who PANICS.

Out of respect for those few Americans who are not contemptible domestic animals begging to be wrapped in unlimited chains forever, I will quote a great American—a famous quote, which obviously applies here:

“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” — Benjamin Franklin

If you're gonna go via corona, you'll most likely be heavily sedated hooked up to a machine for days or weeks before it happens.  No pain or stress.

No, I myself most likely will not be.  I am determined to never die in a hospital; and hospitals are anyway short on ventilators for people who actually want them.  Consider it self-triage.

You may or may not agree with my priorities as to myself.  But it is my personal decision, and one made with a far deeper personal understanding of the issues at hand than that of the usual level of “informed consent”.  If I present symptoms of COVID-19, then I will lock myself in alone at home, and stay that way until I am either recovered or dead.  I have prepared myself accordingly, just in case.  Meanwhile, I don’t dwell on it.  I have briefly alluded that someone I care about contracted COVID-19 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5233043.msg54065345#msg54065345); if I am thinking about COVID-19 in my personal life, I am mostly not thinking of myself!

(She is thus far alive and kicking.  It is a private matter that I do not wish further to discuss publicly, other than to express her and my deep gratitude to the few people who sent along their well-wishes, which I duly conveyed.)

I have had past experiences which assure me that my words are not idle big-talk.  The Latin quotation from Seneca now writ large in my signature is not idle talk, either.  Such philosophizing is useless and worthless, if one is not ready at any moment to put it to practice—as perforce can only happen in times of hardship and tragedy!  Anything else is the vapouring of a cheap hypocrite.

Please express to your neighbour my condolences and well-wishes.  For any decent person, fear for a loved one is indeed incomparably worse than any fear for oneself.

Nobody can pretend to understand the individual pain that your neighbour now bears for a person who is irreplaceable to her.  As a practical matter, the most courageous service that she does for her loved one is to endure this, and keep putting one foot before the other—no matter what.

I once saw up-close the same excruciating process drag on (for over a year, not a few weeks) with a woman whose teenage daughter had advanced-stage cancer.  In such scenarios, women usually have greater emotional endurance than men (and that is very old-fashioned wisdom, not modern “feminism”).  Your neighbour will need every ounce of that strength—whether to nurture her loved one after the “hooked to a ventilator” part is over, or to assure that the memory of that person is not lost amidst tragedy.  She may not be able to rouse that strength for herself—but she must, for her ill family member; and it would be a crime to sap her strength by immersing her in demoralizing “end of the world” mass-panic.  —Her, and all the people worldwide who are now likewise situated.

(How does it go nowadays?  “Denial, anger, depression, bargaining, acceptance.”  I optimize out the first four steps—as is not only realistic but necessary, when the object of these emotions is still alive and will need significant support if he or she remains that way.)

I am determined that if, despite my severe individual precautions, I myself were to contract COVID-19
::)  For you, they are of course just "severe individual precautions"... everyone else is apparently just lacking courage and fearful. Not you, though.. Mr. courageous, laughing in the face of death with your "severe individual precautions" -- right back at ya', COWARD! ::)

There do exist options other than “bullheaded foolhardy recklessness”, and “hysterically shrieking demands to lock down the whole world and forbid all laughter”.  I am thinking:  “Rational individual precautions based on a dispassionate risk-reduction analysis, which have only a small impact on persons close to me, and zero impact on society.”  I will take that one.

See also:

In my own life, to protect myself, I am making some severe trade-offs.  But I am doing that consciously, coldly, without fear; and there are individuals whom I care about sufficiently that for my part, I would risk COVID-19 to spend some time with them if I could.  There are also faraway individuals whose actual illness with COVID-19 I would personally attend if I could, even if they were to cough all over me—even though that would be almost tantamount to a suicide mission for me.  Each trade-off must be weighed differently—consciously, coldly, without fear...

Reductio ad absurdum, would you also call it cowardly or hypocritical for a soldier who preaches courage to don a helmet and body armour before walking into a hailstorm of bullets.

(That sentence is concluded with a full stop, because it is not actually a question.  And b.b. that it is a reductio ad absurdum:  I am explicitly not comparing myself here to soldiers!  In this context, I will accord the honour of that comparison to frontline ER doctors and staff who are currently bathing themselves in high viral loads of SARS-CoV-2.)

You constantly talk yourself in circles, which is why I don't read 90% of what you post anymore.

At this time, I have only one further item to communicate to you:  A grievance over a dishonest, factually false, and defamatory (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5237500.0) (plus peculiarly petty) remark that you made to me a few months ago.  With disquiet and indecision, I held my reserve on that out of respect for your considerable work against forum scams; I now see that that is always a mistake, for I need to address it before I plonk you.  Other than that, please feel free to place me on your ignore list.  I am not writing for you.

I fully support every conspiratard's right to make stupid jokes and to laugh at them... you can't make me laugh at it too though, and/or make me say that it's funny. It just isn't.
I do not think any reasonable person was trying to do that, the quote below. Theymos is a "conspiratard"?

If you have a wife  that was in the hospital with double pneumonia  and you have four cousins with it. It is and was a shitty joke.
Nobody was making a joke about you, nor your situation. That's the point.
Be nice to each other.  :)

That's assuming you get a hospital bed.  :/

I've said since day one - if you are going to get this virus - try to get it first, or last.  You don't want to get sick now when all the supplies are gone.

Please understand and have some empathy for the poor souls who are under a lot of strain because their 'covid-19' hoax is falling apart at the seams.

These people are getting a little twitchy so-to-speak.  It's understandable how they could lash out at a harmless and instructive April fools day prank and get ultra-paranoid and weird about it.

Not theymos... real conspiratards like BayAreaCoins and tvbcof, who got all triggered here because someone (gasp) didn't find the prank funny. It's their God-given right to be idiots.

Now I get it. My initial impression was that you would not state that because it would not make sense. I do agree with those two cases unfortunately they are so.

A guys' gotta wonder how Thermos 'the conspiritard' feels about some gang of propagandists organizing a merit point circle-jerk to leverage his work and ideas.

My guess would be that he finds it an interesting technical challenge as he develops some workable means of developing a useful platform in a world of dedicated, and often enough state funded, 'social media hackers'.

I imagine Theymos is reading through this thread not realizing what a complete clusterfuck an April fools prank would have become. I guess there's always next year.

Well - we are talking about Fauxpup after all...

This years' April Fool's Day prank may have been in bad taste, but as theymos pointed out in his thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5237250.msg54139985#msg54139985) on the subject:

Quote
Note that I designed this "forum virus" to be easy-to-implement and interesting; my goal was not to create any sort of realistic coronavirus model. I suppose it could perhaps serve as an illustrative example of some general concepts, though, such as exponential spread.

I do recall a couple of years ago the prank was the word Bitcoin which was inverted, but otherwise was an unremarkable year.

Another year (??last year??) was a KYC prank with very dubious questions.

I didn't find this joke funny either as I have friends whose family members contacted/died from this disease.

Apparently most people on this thread find humor in replicating a disease infection online, with decorated text. While that text was also annoying I don't think that's what pissed off some people, it was that they were joking about virus. And when you're a part of the situation then things like this really punch you hard in the stomach.

These people are getting a little twitchy so-to-speak.  It's understandable how they could lash out at a harmless and instructive April fools day prank and get ultra-paranoid and weird about it.

This was not an instructive april fools prank. If you read theymos' thread about this it was just a few probabilities that's all. Please step in the victims' shoes first before accusing them of being "ultra-paranoid and weird about it".

And when you're a part of the situation then it really punches you hard in the stomach.
Welcome to the internet. My advice but not in the wording I would use is:
quit acting like a bitch.

Additionally:
As I was bleeding to death I looked up at the paramedic and said "Oh god don't let your ugly ass face be the last thing I see", he had a good laugh and that is how I face adversity. If you can't look death in the eye and laugh thats your own weakness.

Don't let fear rule your life, if you do then your not living, your just existing.

And not to forget this as well:
::) If you choose to see-as-evil acts which were clearly done in the spirit of fun & good faith, then you're creating demons for your personal living hell...
The perception and reaction is your own choice, regardless of the circumstances that you are in.

Origin post of first advice seems to be missing, but somebody else quoted it first.

Read a bit through this , and I'd like to ask the people that got offended by this whole 1st of april forum virus situation.

How did it exactly offend you ? I understood the part about people close to you being infected with Covid , but I want to know how was this forum virus offensive to you ? Your family etc .

This forum infectation theymos created had more of an constructive impact intro providing a simulation of how fast the virus is actually spreading ,
I remember the text in the news part had something like "  Practice social distancing " , which was a very good advice , and for people who think ,  " nah I can't get infected , corona ain't real etc " maybe this simulation provided some insight as to how easily this can spread .

So I ask again ? Where was the distasteful joke in all of this ??  How did it make fun of the global covid crisis we're going through ?  How did it hurt , make fun , disrespect your ill  wife , cousins etc.

Where was the distasteful joke in all of this ??

While it's true I found the prank slightly distasteful, I was then interested to read the methodology employed in "spreading" the fake disease.  As theymos said it could be used as a study of interactions of totally random people in a completely safe environment.

Firstly, you are probably a fuckin liar with all your friends family who died, or your friends are jackin you.  55,000/7,500,000,000 = 0.000007 as a ratio of humans who've died to date.

Secondly, three of my four grandparents died of cancer and the fourth lost a leg to it.  My mom is fighting it right now.  I'm not whining and crying because someone makes a joke about cancer, and certainly not because I perceive it.  As a matter of fact I am very thankful to anyone who puts effort into trying to figure out what is going on with it and bring attention to the problem because I don't trust the medical/industrial complex to do anything but make it worse cancer being an incredible cash-cow for them.

You are being a drama queen bitch and everyone can see it.  You should crawl back into your safe-hole and only venture out only into the cushy safe world that the tech giants are creating for all you millennial snowflakes.

If I'd have merits left to share they'd all go to you.

But just about the first part of your text , I think he's stated about some members of his family/relatives/friends being infected  ???  That would make sense .

I am at home, I can't really go out because it was suggested to stay at home, I can't visit my parents because they are old, I am also not happy with thought "what happens to my kids if me and my wife catch it and it complicates, who the fuck will take care of them" and honestly I don't see this April fools prank as something bad.

I am not going to argue with anyone here and what someone finds funny or not.

I do not see bringing a reminder and extra awareness to the contagious nature of this virus to members as a negative.
Very clever, thoughtful and interesting.
As a brand new member of this community it is though encouraging to note that even the chief can be criticized ( although on this occasion i don't feel the criticism is that useful).

Wash those hands, and consider carefully those you choose to engage with.
