I'm not that much fan of continuous learning especially to secure funds and to make sure that I am transacting efficiently, but literally, we people mostly are contented from what we have especially the way how we transact using traditional methods such as transacting with fiats, and bank transfers. I have met allot of people and some of them are already old (60 above), and for them, there's no room for improvements in terms of transactions as even bank transfer is hard for them to execute that they need someone to support them while doing so.

Question arises if they are in situation like this, how can we teach them with new methods of transaction such as bitcoin or to somehow take them out of their comfort zone when in fact, their aren't really comfortable with it in a sense that they need assistance of younger generations. Perhaps, there's nothing wrong to still try and make them accept in bitcoin if we know how we can properly explain it to them. Or to use the concept of "Abstraction" which I learned from Object Oriented Programming.

The easiest way is to make sure you're not going right away into technical terms such as Encryptions, Hash Rates, Blockchain, etc. And to take it slowly by using smart analogy to correlate it while explaining because believe me, old people behaves unpredictably. Make it easy and start your conversation by offering a good meal, share some stories as you transition to tell him a new version of Gold (As I believe it can be a good example of physical bitcoin) which is virtual and anonymously created by someone up until now is not known.

Story goes explaining that they need an internet access in order to buy this virtual currency that they can use for e-commerce, or transacting with other people and it is like sending messages (https://news.bitcoin.com/these-analogies-will-help-you-explain-bitcoin-to-anyone/) but instead of strings of characters, they can only send numbers in which are called Bitcoins. Another is that bitcoin is like Fungus (https://news.bitcoin.com/these-analogies-will-help-you-explain-bitcoin-to-anyone/). what is there is a decentralized networks that shares the same information, the same with fungus having a characteristics of Fungi are also undying as after the five mass extinction, they still remain on earth. That's how powerful bitcoin network is.

I'm sure there comes a portion of the conversation when they will ask how to secure their money will be or how to access it. This is when we will try to simplify things out by explaining public keys and private keys in a way that they usually know how it works such as comparing it with username and password on their facebook, twitter or Instagram accounts. Moreover, try to use analogy as your conversation goes deeper and deeper in a sense that they will understand each terms without you giving them bunch of knowledge in which they don't understand.

Of course everyone will not be interested if we are just sharing things like these without giving them something more valuable than what they normally use. A dream of inviting our old citizens to bitcoin will not be possible if we ourselves lacks the fundamental knowledge about it, the best way to properly explain things is to first learn and use it. There's we can formulate various analogy to correlate terms and to lead them in the right path as they engage themselves with bitcoin. I believe that there's no boundary of ages for people to use it, that is why I like to learn and use bitcoin.

Cryptocurrency is all about learning new things most especially for the older people and can be a big challenge for many who could not even open and use a computer well. Crypto will have a great future ahead and my only aim is to make a future in crypto. Many people will soon learn about crypto as the time will go on because those days aren't far when bitcoin will be used as world currency.

Community quarantine is still happening in different parts of the world.
They cannot make their transactions outside and they will rely on the internet.
It would be best to first target the services.
Once they have the option to pay in bitcoin then maybe, even just for a little chance the people will use that option.

But think about it, if there is no option to pay thru bitcoin then what use can it be?
You say just an investment. But it was not made for that.
If they lose money they will just withdraw it which makes it look like a bank. Why not just pick bank instead? It will be easier.

Very well said, bitcoin gives us a big help, there are many things that this bitcoin gives to us and that is why many people are still using it. Bitcoin is very well known in the very country those counties that use bitcoin would be really benefited in the future, as of now bitcoin is really helpful what more in the future, maybe one-day bitcoin could be a standard currency all over the world but I think that would take so much time, it needs advanced technology and knowledge for every people. On my own experienced it really helps me with my finances, it helps me to buy my needs and wants so blessed that I tried this kind of cryptocurrency.

Using and investing in bitcoin can really give us the brighter future if we know how to manipulate it properly. After reading your writing, I can conclude that there are doubts about the function of bitcoin as a currency, which raises one question "whether bitcoin is a financial innovation suitable for all ages?".

The answer to that question might lead to one thing that is lacking from bitcoin itself because in my opinion age is an important factor as a bridge to connect old innovations to new innovations. While I am just convinced that we do not need to offer an understanding of bitcoin transactions to people aged 60 years and over, especially to the lay community. Its the same as you trying to knock down a wall with your bare hands. Really bitcoin is a financial innovation suitable for a productive age in my logic.

You don't have to be a tech savvy person to be able to use bitcoin.
I believe anyone who can use a credit card to pay online would be able to pay with bitcoins too. You don't need to know how things work under the hood.
The problem with cryptos is that you are the only one responsible for securing your funds. There is no third party to take care of it.
Also, many tutos and guides overcomplicate things which makes eldies more reluctant to use bitcoin.

Learning Bitcoin after joining the race should be encourage, this is the means whereby newborns can actually understand the chemistry that surround the bitcoin protocols. I agree! We need to educate ourselves and teach people what is Bitcoin? and how to use it? Today there are App that are simplifying the way we handle Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, our Crypto Mobile wallet, and everyone has their favorite. There are also debit cards filled with crypro, I think that soon there will be credit cards.

We don't have to have deep understanding of how something works to be able to use it.

Well, it is an interesting discussion about the use of Bitcoin and other cryptos for payment transactions. We all have known that currently, the online payment have been rising, moreover because of the pandemic. It is done in order to decrease the ways of spreading the virus. by online payment, we can limit our movement and activities for touching something. In this case, the OP concerns is about the Bitcoin. Well, such interesting and personally I also feel the same, will be great enough to use Bitcoin and other cryptos for some kinds of payment method and transactions. However, before going to have it, there are some notes as the followings

If you are talking about 60 YO people and more, I think it is better to let their children or families to do the online payment. Well, in some countries, online payment may have been usual and common enough. For 60/moreYO people, they are probably usual to use online banking and other online payment methods for transactions. But, for some other countries, they cannot, they are really not usual using this, they will prefer to use the fiats for payment. Moreover about Bitcoin, I don't think that it will be effective for them.
However, if it is about for the people under 50YO, I am sure that it is still effective and may work well for them to learn about online payment, especially about Bitcoin or other cryptos. (note: it doesn't mean that I underestimate 60/more YO, but I see the reality, it may be the most.)

Second, if we are going to introduce the people about using Bitcoin, we should ensure that it is available to use that digital currency for payment methods in your country. How can we teach someone with something not exist in the area around us? For example, I live in a country where the Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are only legalized as digital assets, but not for the payment. It must be noted. It means that this expectation cannot be implemented in all countries, especially like what happens in my countries, it will never be effective to introduce the BTC for payment because it will not be used there. However, if it is for the countries that already use BTC for payment, I think we only need to spread the positive news and issues to them, teaching them by acting, they will see what you do and what you get. And when they think it is effective and easy enough, they will be interested in learning about it.

If it is about introducing them to use BTC as another way of investment or earning money, it may happen in almost all countries that support or legalize crypto. In this case, you may not tell them only about the profits, high expectations to be rich, and others. It is better to tell them the exact facts, about the profits and also risks.

What do you mean by [fundamental knowledge] required to invite others? I think it's necessary to know that bitcoin function like any other app and we don't have to understand the code behind it. I want to say that you don't have to be a coder or programmer to be able to use bitcoin or to understand its usefulness.

The most important part IMO is to simply explain that bitcoin can be considered as a currency (cryptographic one) and as a paiement system as well; a conbination of two systems. This may help old people who belong to old era to start adopting the concept as something simple and ordinary to use by everybody, reminding them on how they adopted new paiement methods like ATMs and PayPal which are both a paiement system using FIAT as their currencies .

I knew a lot of people who become successful in manipulating bitcoin as their assets. For me, I'm okay with my investment and I'm inspired by them so everytime I think of their success, I really work hard with full effort and think of positive things. Learning is free and you should keep on learning things that you want to experience, you just need to have a positive mindset towards your objectives so that you will not have a hard time reaching your goal. Bitcoin is really good if you invest to it, as it really requires proper manipulation and good control depending on the market. Learning bitcoin is extraordinary and you're lucky enough if you engage with bitcoin because not all of us are given a chance to experience earning profit from a cryptocurrency.

Your thread title does not really speak to the content of your thread. You should have called it something like, "How to teach older people to use Bitcoin"  ;D

In my experience, most older people think that they are too old to learn new things... when it comes to everything to do with computers, they just put a "block" on their own abilities, by saying things like " I am too old for these new technologies" or "Computers are for the younger generation."

There are a few exceptions and I take my hat off for those people.  ;) Older people filter new things, based on their absolute needs... if they do not need it, they just chuck it. My mother wanted to talk to her grand children on a regular basis, but the calls was too expensive for her (we pay for it, but she says it is too expensive) ...so we showed her how to WhatsApp and we told her that the voice notes are virtually free... now she is bombarding the kids with voice notes.

                                                   Moral of the story... if they need it, they will do it.

I really love learning new things, and im so glad that one of my friends taught me how to use Bitcoin, she shared me her knowledge in this crypto currency.  And it's all up to you how you'll grow and learn strategic ways on how to earn your profit. Just keep on searching and learn in every way.

To be honest I wouldn't recommend an old man to use bitcoin. First of all, a great majority of them can barely use applications on a smartphone. I certainly don't want an elder to misspell a bitcoin address and send his pension to a void address.  I think this is a great use case though. If someone could build an app specifically designed for old people with simplicity in mind and guidance - I'm sure it would be a hit.

No offense but your statement made me confused.  If I understand it right, you mean we to learn bitcoin first before using it?  Isn't that the basic thing on all kinds of stuff?  the thing here is, what will trigger my interest to learn Bitcoin?  

People, as we know always have this in their mind, "What is my gain on using this stuff".  So Bitcoin must answer this kind of question.  Bitcoin must also show that it is better than the currently existing system, aside from the propaganda of "controlling our own bank". People have needs, desires, and dreams and if Bitcoin will give way to the fulfillment of these things (not a fake hope)  the people will desire to learn Bitcoin and transact with it.

Teaching older people to use bitcoin is not easy because they will not just think that they are too old to learn new things, but they will also hard to accept new things. I already tell my uncle about bitcoin, and I tried to teach them, but they don't want to know more about bitcoin, and they prefer to stay with the transaction that they make in the banks. But I don't know about the other older people because I don't try to search for the other, and I prefer to let them search what they want.

We cannot force them to learn something, especially new things, but if they need to find out, they will come to us, and in that time, we can tell and teach them slowly, until they can understand the point. Let them feel that they really need that new thing, and they will come to us. I agree with you about "if they need it, they will do it".

When I enter this crypto world I dont have any idea what I am going to do and what benefits that I can get in joining here but I got interested even more when I got my first pay out. I dont have any idea about bitcoin or even the block chain but I studied and make some research in order for me to gain knowledge about these things. Look at me now I learned a lot because of my research and now I am sharing my learnings to the newbies to help them learn more about crypto world.

Of course we need to learn about bitcoin or cryptocurrency in general to understands it's importance in our life and economy and to know it's features and how to use it. More people did not understand bitcoin in just one story or news,they need something to learn more. We need to learn how to use bitcoin wisely because we all know that bitcoin is risky and volatile. Bitcoin existed for only 10 years, and it didn't face too much adversity so far, so any claims that Bitcoin is indestructible are purely theoretical. Bitcoin didn't witness a nuclear war, a mass extinction, an alien attack, a global ban by governments, a 51% attack, a critical bug in its protocol and lots of other threats. And however small it might be right now, there's always a chance Bitcoin will get replaced by a different coin or a whole new tech.

Indeed, that is what I am saying, there must be a driving factor for people to learn Bitcoin.  If you have not received a payout, do you think you will continue your journey on cryptocurrency?  In order for us to get motivated, there should be something that will give us satisfaction.  That is either knowledge, interest, or financial profit.  

For older people, the easiest way I think is through financial gain.  But I, think that is one of the hardest because of the high volatility of BTC and the huge possibility of failure due to the lack of market knowledge in the early days of joining the industry.

Forget about trying to promote Bitcoin to older people.Focus on the younger generation.After all,Bitcoin is going to be the currency of the future.We keep repeating this mantra in the forum,why don't we just make it happen.Old people are very conservative about anything,they stick to what they are familiar with.
Young people are more liberal,open minded and tech savvy.The young generation of new "bitcoiners" is going to start making more money and invest their savings into digital assets and currencies like Bitcoin.

I agree at some point, but majority who have the power to establish a business, campaign, and institution is from older people.  They have the means to spend something big, unlike majority of the younger generation who is just starting to build up their career.  That is why, to have a strong foundation, we need all generations to unite and start believing and using Bitcoin. And as far as I know, only stubborn old people stick to what they are familiar with, but there are those who are open-minded and ready to embrace changes and evolution of technology.

Never too late to learn new things. Before I have experienced using computer not having any internet. No cellphones. People adapts to whar will be more convenient to them. Nowadays, I see old people enjoying social media and it is great.

You touched on one very interesting question, but we should still put some things in place before we move on. When you talk about older people (over 60), several factors that significantly affect how they perceive new technologies should be considered. I think it's the first and basic level of education, because if you start explaining to people who have never used a computer what Bitcoin is, you won't get very far. The second factor is something we can call the age factor, and it would refer to the fact that in some countries people at that age are still actively involved in society, while in some other countries people are already dying at that age (due to poor living standards, very difficult working conditions ...). When we look at Bitcoin as a unique idea that is in stark contrast to what these people have believed in all their lives, then it is not just a question of technology, but of habits and beliefs.


I agree that some older people understand new technologies like Bitcoin much better than some younger ones, but even if they manage to understand everything, how do you explain the problem of volatility to them? Personally, I would not want someone to suffer a heart attack because they lost 60% of their investment overnight, for which there is a great possibility when it comes to the elderly. Bitcoin is available to everyone regardless of age, but the question is how much older people are interested in changing their life habits.

There might be no boundaries to learn it but there is difficulty to make them listen.

For our elders who are still with us, it will always be the traditional fiat which comes first.
That is why it is difficult to have a discussion with them. But some of them listen.

For middle age, the combined fiat and digital money. Some of them do use cryptocurrencies.

Maybe it is our young one's which we could pursue more since they might be also the ones who will use this in the future.
It could be a difficult task but with perseverance can be achieved.
Social media will be a lot of help since they were attached to it.

I agree because it will help the cryptocurrency in general. As you are spreading, more and more people will be curious on it and will make a research to it and now that online transactions are being used globally because of the pandemic I think that many people will try to use crypto as an alternative way of paying online.

On the other hand as more and more people are losing jobs worldwide, people are holding on to their cash and that would be better for them if I will be asked. This is because not all establishments are accepting it. Spreading the gospel like you said but the people doesn't have any money to invest into it. Either way, it is still good that you opened it to them.

Bitcoin is the best cryptocurrency in the market .You an easily learn from it by the trading practise of buying and selling the coin and deep analysis of the price of bitcoin from the year of the his existence. My favourite crypto is bitcoin, Eth,Neo ,litecoin and I am holding this coin from long and waiting for my profit from it. In some countries, crypto debit cards are in practise.

BTC has set the price for the entire cryptocurrency market and this has been since the day it emerged back in 2009. BTC has transformed the way we think about technology and finance today and has paved the way to blockchain technology now the biggest disrupter ever - thought to be even more so than the internet of things. These are a few of my thoughts how BTC and the crypto industry has come together and transformed our everyday lives. And as mentioned above it provides a chance for people to better themselves financially as well as culturally.

Unfortunately the governmental bodies fail to recognize the fact that , they should give their citizens privacy when it comes to their hard earned money . They are literally tracking everyone through KYC .

Now they are trying to control the cryptocurrencies too .

What Bitcoins gives it's user is unmatched. It is a sense of security that they really own what they earn which I do think any person owning Fiat won't be able to experience.

Good use of analogy there OP, but we can take note that we don't need to learn anything everything in order to spread the word about bitcoin. It is just like using a computer, many people use it without even understanding the underlying hardware on how things work inside of it. It is the same as what you called "Abstraction".

On the other hand, you have an edge if you know more about a computer, just like in bitcoin, you can explain it very well even to old people and I think it should be the main thing we, cryptocurrency enthusiast should do if we really want bitcoin to take over the world.

If we want to provide education, we should have a strong knowledge base and experience. If we don't have that then we cannot provide information and education appropriately. Especially if we can not prove the results or real profits, it could be only considered nonsense and gibberish.

Indeed there is no age limit for learning. As long as there is a willingness, supporting facilities and infrastructure, anyone can learn and try to benefit from cryptocurrency.

Yes, I do believe that bitcoin gives is freedom in finance since there is no central body that controls it. But let us be wary also that this independence that bitcoin provides might be a reason why the government would look more down into it.
Bitcoin is a very volatile asset, it can give you a huge profit same as huge loss. But now? I don't see a disaster coming to bitcoin for good.
Cryptography is secured, no one can steal your bitcoin unless you are careless enough to broadcast your private keys. Also the exchanges, we've been encountered a lot of security breaching before, the crypto is secured, what's not totally secured are the services around.
With being pseudonymous, privacy is better through the blockchain.

For security reasons, government should be looking to everyone of us, just consider the fact that we should be moving according to law.

I don’t think there is any need for long stories, you can just go straight to the point and tell them how to make use of it, you simply copy the address of the recipient, and then you open your Bitcoin and go to the sending page and enter their address and enter the amount you want to send, hit send and that’s it. I don’t think there is anything when it comes to making use of bitcoin, though I still know that there are those who will find it difficult. Same as it’s easy to make use of online banking, but some people still find it difficult.

The internet money is not really meant for everyone, if they can’t get it, then let them stick to the level that works for them. I am not saying this to discourage anyone but this is what I had concluded after tried to convince few of my friends to adopt bitcoins; most of them had refused as it is seeming too technical for their level of exposure to internet/online.

This is really an amazing thread and to be honest, the fact you pointed out here are what the industry really needs to push bitcoin and cryptocurrency adoption to the outside world, since i joined cryptocurrency market, i have to admit that I've been more tech savvy because I'm always on the look out to learn about the technology behind cryptocurrency and other innovative advancements. I believe proper knowledge about cryptocurrency will help people a lot as they will know more of the vision and concept of decentralization behind cryptocurrency and above all, the security measures to have the best of this space. Cryptocurrency becomes popular where it comes to bitcoin. It is additional knowledge to learn about it and how it works along the market where you trade and invest with it. Others are having financial freedom on working on it and even used this currency to purchase on online stores. There are lot of reason why keep liking bitcoin but only few can understand.

Nice post about how will you slowly informed old people about btc, which I think also works to other people as well. However, if those old people didn't even use techy stuff today, I think it will be difficult for you to make them stay interested in the first place. I agree with you about slowly getting them to know about bitcoin using simple terms, we used it to everybody. The real problem is how will you able to make them stay interested in what you are talking about. You even forgot to say the volatility of bitcoin, the risk etc. I think it should be a part of informing others about btc. It comes with it. We have to be honest in telling others about btc as a whole. We should not make them float in the greatness of btc only.

In my experience, I tell them slowly how one can earn and invest in btc. Lets be honest, there's people who will be interested right away if its about earning money. Even old people will push themselves to understand it if they can earn from it. Then I go from there to explaining what btc is in simple terms, history, risk and so on. I get the point but I think it's hard for older people to understand such things because they grew up with lesser technological innovation. This is still quite early, only a decade of BTC exists. The evolution of this system continues, marked by the adoption of many BTCs, whether as an alternative payment, investment products, trade commodities, etc. I try to provide education in the smallest scope around me, namely the family. I have taught my wife about Crypto World, she is very interested and now likes writing articles about crypto. I have a partner to work together to raise capital. There is also a niece that I have taught, but it seems he is not interested enough so he does not continue this. Blockchain and all about this technology is really hard to grasp, even me, I am barely holding on whenever reading threads about the technicality. I was like that, too. Heard bitcoin from a friend, had some speculations, thought it was scam, but after seeing the benefits it gave to my friend, I took the risk and got myself involved. I was able to earn enough and even lent my earned btc to my partner for financial purposes.

However, no matter how hard we try to show them the benefits, no matter how hard we try to educate them and make them adapt, there are still people who would refuse. But there is a big challenge for people who want to try to earn from bitcoin. The chance will not be too big if he doesn't learn more about the ways, so he will not be able to earn many bitcoin. Maybe he needs to spend more time to learn from many sources so he can improve his skills and knowledge about how to earn more bitcoin. It is hard, but it is worth to try because so far, not all people know bitcoin, and not all people use bitcoin as the investment, and they are still preferred with the traditional way.

That was really the big difference between young and old generations. But, for me, there is no age range in learning as long as we are always willing. Because I always believe that everyday in life is a learning process for us. We only need to have the eagerness to adopt.

Here you can write a lot, both good and bad, but the main way I want to answer the question "Why do I like learning and using bitcoins" - I'm just a fan of Bitcoin. I like everything related to Bitcoin, I even adore collecting from taps, although it is not economically profitable, in short, - Bitcoin takes up a large part of my life. Sometimes you have to lose - not all investment projects are honest - but after a minute of disappointment, the mood reappears and I go ahead.

I want to highlight international payments since the fees from the traditional transactions is way to high, but comparing with cryptocurrency and bitcoin, everyone is the same no matter how far we are apart from each other, transactions are fast. I suppose, whether they accept it or not. A day will come where they'll be force to use it, because fiat losses value whenever banks starts mass printing of new paper money. Countries may regulated Bitcoin and maybe other cryptocurrencies but only a few stores, merchants, and people are actually accepting or using it. We can use to buy anything with Bitcoin, the problem is that they don't accepted it, still.

And that reason still is hard to validate at this moment. Maybe, if further developments will happen, things could go well and many people will see the importance of cryptos and how it brings convenience to every transaction. If the world goes to fully digital payment methods then it will be very easy for the governments to print more money, all they will have to do is a single click from the mouse and they can create money supply out of thin air and we would also have to trust them as they are the ones deciding policies n all. What we can do is just to estimate.
And as Bitcoin is a stable coin so if it also falls down, then we won't face any losses.

You can predict the short term price through technical analysis, a lot of people thinks trading is like gambling but it is a myth because trading is a set of rules and you need to know what kind of analysis that you should use in order to make gains. I think people should not view bitcoin as just source of income, because  a lot thinks that it is a form of investment and not a form of currency that can develop the payment system in the near future.

Agree, I've watch one of the videos of Yes Theory, they try to live for 24 hours using only bitcoin, they can't even understand what it is at first, and its really hard for them to explain it too. They managed to ride a plane using btc, and it took them a lot of time finding a restaurant that would accept btc, glad they have found one, but the struggle is real. The whole video makes me realize that it would really be hard for now to live a day using btc only.  No one as of now would go through such effort just to use btc, they can just use their currency.

My journey started when my smart friend told me to take a look into bitcoin and after that I started by looking for websites to earn bitcoin / other cryptos online without investing anything. After earning a little I messed up trading / fees and what not. After that learning experience I invested 100$ every month and I bought BTC from $14K until $5K and then I stoped buying.
