Title: Favorite political figure?
Post by: sana8410 on May 28, 2014, 11:48:32 AM
Hello everyone! Just thought we could share political figures which inspire us with each other.
You can choose from either past or present! No matter from which country.

I'll start!

Mine would be Alexander the Great!

Born to King Philip II in 356 BC, he had everything. He was a prince to a mighty kingdom, yet unlike many spoiled rich brats who end up squandering their parent's empire like many we see today, he had an intense dislike of his father, and he transformed that dislike into an overwhelming desire and pit-less ambition to achieve more than him.

When his father launched a military campaign and conquered almost all of Greece, he famously complained "My father will go on conquering until there is nothing extraordinary left for me to do."

When he was 20, his father was murdered by a courtier. The cities which was under his father's rule rise up in rebellion, dreaming of freedom. However, even though he was advised by advisers to proceed cautiously, in a show of strength, he marched to the furthest reaches of his kingdom crushing every rebellion along the way.

This is a man who would end up conquering most of Asia and created one of the largest empires of the ancient world, a task he undertook when he was crowned as king when merely 20 years of age.

There is much we can learn from Alexander.

Who is your inspiration?

It is in fact the only story I remember about Alexandr the Great. Before he died, he ask people to let his hands out of the coffin. What he meant was: I left with my bared hands. (correct me if I am wrong)
Just wonder why he killed so many people while always being aware that some day he would leave with the bared hands.

He killed so many people, because he was a conqueror and that's what conquerors do! His contributions to what is considered the Hellenistic culture, notwithstanding, and his military strategies and successful imperialistic campaign...but, can you truly consider him an inspiration? Maybe, if he had lived longer a true evaluation could be reached regarding how he chose to rule his empire. He's an interesting historical figure.

Here is my favorite. I don't agree with him on policies such as international immigration, but definitely he is one of the best politicians right now.

Some of his achievements resulted in the deaths of more than 60 million people (almost all of them civilians). And don't forget the invasion of Tibet and the mass atrocities committed there, under his command.

There are umpteen number of leaders in the history who hold a special place for themselves...However, there is one figure who is on the favorite list of scores of individuals across the globe and he is Great Mahatma Gandhi.. Modestly always dressed in simple khadi attires, he had lead India to gain freedom from the British rule.. As far as I remember, he had studied law, but then left in between to devote himself to his mother country.. Salute to such a man!

Pope Francis Is Probably the Best Politician in the World - While celebrating an open-air Mass in Bethlehem, Francis unexpectedly invited Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to the Vatican for a June meeting of prayer and dialogue. Within an hour, both had accepted. Francis’s successful overture was especially remarkable considering the failed efforts by the United States earlier this spring to get both sides to the table to begin negotiated peace talks. However, this could be the boost that Secretary of State John Kerry needed to revive this peace process, which has been largely dormant for the past four years. As you can see Pope is better at politics than US government.

Mao Ze-Dong  is in the top of the list when it comes to make a “list” with the worst genocides of the 20th and 21st Centuries.”The Chinese cultural revolution caused the death of 30 million people (according to the current Chinese government), but many died of hunger. “

Pope Francis is more of a religious leader than a political figure. I agree that he is the head of state in Vatican / Holy Sea, but not many people will classify him as a political figure.

My favorite leader is Abraham Lincoln .. He was simply a genius.. Had he be ruling the country now, the world would have been an all together a different place surely..

Lol...hell yes it would be different. Martial law, imprisoning dissenters, no trial by jury...

With the technology of today he could kill a lot more than a few hundred thousand Americans in the name of "Unifying the country" aka, squashing individual and state rights.

Abraham Lincoln was a pure politician, and with today's media his ability to flip-flop on issues, depending on which region of the country he was in, would be non-existent. Abraham Lincoln told the audience exactly what they wanted to hear, and definitively stated that if he could end the war without freeing a single slave he would. His goal was to keep the Union together, not to end slavery. However, he was instrumental in the passage of the 13th Amendment, outlawing slavery; Sadly, his assassination prevented a successful "Reconstruction" of the United States. Although, I'm not sure had he lived, things would be any different. The Radical Republicans of that era were able to capitalize on the tragedy to ensure passage of significant legislation, the 14th and 15th Amendments!!

But, with the way Citizens United has perverted the 14th amendment it would be interesting to see what old Abe thinks of Corporations being considered people and political contributions protected as free speech!!

With larger ships and with airplanes, his plan of shipping all of the black people back to Africa would be easier in this day and age too.

A great person in every way Martin Luther King .... America needs more people like him .
I would like to mention Che Guevara as well - big man and big political person - for those who don't know who he is , I can only say that Cuban Revolution would never happened without him ,

would like to add some quotes by Che :
"The revolution is not an apple that falls when it is ripe. You have to make it fall."

Or my favorite :
"I know you are here to kill me. Shoot, coward, you are only going to kill a man."

Viva la revolucion !

Mine would be Napoleon Bonaparte! He was a great French emperor who was loved by a lot of his subjects. When he was exiled by his political foes, he chose to escape captivity and marched a small army to Paris itself! :D And when he was confronted by the enemy (his former) army, he said "If there is one of you who would kill his Emperor, here I am." They instead surrendered to him and joined him to claim France back into his rule. Too bad he was not an economist. He barely ruled for 100 days after his return from exile.

Martin Luther King was indeed a very inspirational figure! It was amazing how he kept fighting for equality for his people while constantly facing death threats, heavy oppression, discrimination and even warnings from the FBI and CIA.
US will not be such a great nation today without him leading the charge for freedom and equality for all races. He definitely not only made US, but the world as a whole a better place as other countries slowly heed his words and follow his example.

I think there has been a lack of female political figures in this thread. What about Edith Wilson, President Woodrow Wilson's wife, who secretly ruled as the president of the United States when her husband suffered a stroke!

In 1919, Woodrow Wilson suffered a stroke which left him paralyzed on his left side and in a weakened state. So his wife, was forced to step up to the role of helping him govern.

She was told that Wilson was no longer capable of exercising many of his presidential duties, Edith was given two strict directives by his doctors: if Woodrow was to leave office, it would probably kill him, however, if he was burdened by government affairs, that would also probably kill him

Placed in the position of keeper of the presidency in a time before women were even allowed to vote, Edith kept his weakened state hidden from his staffers and the nation for six weeks. And was left largely in power over a country that will one day become the most powerful nation in the world for 2 years from 1919 to 1921!

Although in her memoirs, Edith claims that she only decided which matters to bring to Woodrow's attention and which could be resolved without him, this is actually a LOT of power. She also fought against having the vice president take office in Woodrow's stead. Many have thus referred to her as the first female president of the United States.

She was also vastly credited to be the driving force behind giving women the rights to vote!

This is because women was granted the rights to vote in 1920 and she secretly took over the role of the president of the US in 1919. Coincidence? I think not.

you know, as great as our heroes are.. it's kind of shocking when you find out more about their dark side. ghandi, MLK, and many other figures throughout history have had a seedy point in their life.

though einstein isn't my political figure/hero, he was very political in nature. the people here would hate him though, since he fought for a "world government."

Though if it weren't for him we wouldn't have Bitcoin. Considering he handed all of the US control of money to the Federal Reserve. Though, who knows, maybe we would have had Bitcoin a lot sooner.

True but the fix was in to get us into that 'war' again and Kerry getting elected after the putz's first term wouldn't have changed things. He was a fellow Skull and Bones member after all. Anyways, Senator Rand Paul is my favorite political figure as he's been leading the charge of mainstreaming libertarian ideals and growing the republican party base in a more libertarian-populist friendly direction.

Woodrow Wilson,he was the one that passed alcohol prohibition.
He segregated water fountains because he refused to drink after any black person. he jailed anyone who spoke out against the war (can you imagine bush or obama doing that?) and helped create the fed, something he regretted till the day he died. he wrote about the need to use eugenics on americans to prevent the lower class from breeding. he spoke about breaking up the american family so the government could influence children.

Glad to see so many excellent and inspiring political leaders being recognized and recommended in this thread!
I would also like to honor Francis Bacon, an England politician in the late 1500s who served under both Queen Elizabeth I and King James I!
Although his father was a Lord Keeper, he climbed up the political ladder the hard way starting from an MP, to attorney general and eventually Lord Chancellor of England. He was a close adviser to the King and even supported some of the King's very controversial decisions so that he could convince the King to encourage Scientific Development in Britain!
In an era which was still burning witches at the stake, he managed to use his influence in court to encourage scientific endeavors and was widely regarded after his death as the father of the great scientific revolution of the western world.
He remained extremely influential through his works, especially as philosophical advocate and practitioner of the scientific method during the scientific revolution.

The Roman Emperor Cincinnatus deserves a mention. He was asked to be emperor twice during a times of crisis for Rome and when he had managed the crisis he gave up absolute power, restored the republic and returned to his farm.
The cities of Cincinnati Ohio and Italy are named after him.

Julius Caesar was a great military leader, no doubt. But he was also one of the world's first absolute dictators. He violently and forcibly overthrew the democratically elected senate three times in total.

Muhammad Ali  was a professional boxer ,he showed world-class genius in every stage of his career: intrapersonal genius -his ability to motivate himself; interpersonal genius -his ability to communicate and socialize; physical genius -do I need to explain; and of course, mathematical genius. Ali’s genius in strategy and tactics – to me, is mathematical....so if he wouldn't have been an professional boxer probably he would've been and great political figure.

"A man who could have ruled the Roman Empire but instead returned to his small farm to be with his family."
This man, Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus lived 2500 years ago, at the rise of the Roman Empire, and over the ages, he’s been considered an outstanding example of a person who would humbly surrender power for the good of his fellow citizens.
Cincinnatus’ story especially touches us now when we see presidents and dictators grab more power but it has been true throughout history as leaders have always lusted to rule.
http://www.kazantoday.com/WeeklyArticles/wk151.html

People like him(the real leaders) choose to live a simple life and let the world be ruled by dictators and corrupt presidents......

With Muhammad Ali, I think he earned a lot of the aura around him through his rebellious attitude. His courage in shunning his accolades for the civil rights movement was what was commendable. Not sure how successful he would have been as a political figure though, assuming we're talking about leaders here

My favorite character in history is Alexander also! Truly an amazing man...

Some of the figures mentioned above were truly remarkable, both as military leaders and/or political thinkers... but I've noriced a lack of figures from the Middle Ages in this thread - and I think there were also medieval politicians worth mentioning.
So I would go for Charlemagne - he re-introduced the idea of imperial power in the West. He was also a great military leader who united vast ethnically and culturally different areas of Western Europe under one rule (although some of his decisions might well be disputed) and managed to rule them as peacefully as it was possible at his time (with Saxons being major exception). And he had sort of intelectual interests as well - he sponsored an important cultural revival after dark centuries whereby helping to preserve and enrich ancient legacy for the whole Western civilization.

Another interesting medieval figure was emperor Frederick II in the 13th century, I think - he managed to oppose the pope, instead of leading a crusade he made peace with his Saracen adversaries that provided Christian pilgrims with free access to the Holy land, and as a Sicilian king he maintained religious tolerance (Christians, Muslims and Jews living in hramony in Sicily ;) ) for the benefit of his kingdom. And at time when literacy was still not perfectly common among Western ruling elites, he not even could read and spoke six languages - he also wrote book (on falconry) :)

Ol Dubya

One of the basic skills of filling the shoes of a sock puppet president is that you need to be able to read the Teleprompter, and so his reading skills were just above that of a small child, meant he just qualified to be able to carry out the most important part of the acting role as the commander and chief, to be able to read a speech someone else had written for him.

He did more in his two terms to undermine the credibility of the oval office than all of the previous sock puppets combined. So he gets my vote as fav political figure...

Seriously though, my favourite political leader would be Chief Gall of the Lakota. True visionary and a decisive and self-less leader of the people.

Ahhhhh, Francis Bacon! I remember reading about him once in a history book.I liked one of the quotes he wrote in his greatest book, The Advancement of Learning where he wrote:

"And being now at some pause, looking back into that I have passed through, this writing seemeth to me (si nunquam fallit imago), as far as a man can judge of his own work, not much better than that noise or sound which musicians make while they are in tuning their instruments, which is nothing pleasant to hear, but yet is a cause why the music is sweeter afterwards. So have I been content to tune the instruments of the Muses, that they may play that have better hands. "

The humility of that man! Not many politicians nowadays can be humble like that if they are in his position.

He's a revolutionary pope that has rejected all the fancy customs and extravagant costumes of the papal office and has exhibited very humble attitude unlike other popes before him, even actively addressing problems faced by the church and apologizing for past church actions such as sexual abuse cases and accepting gay marriage.
This is surely a great man who is deserving of our respect, regardless of religious beliefs! (or the lack thereof)

Viva la revolucion !

http://studentlibertyfront.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/che3.jpg?w=595
I remember reading about his literacy campaign once.He was a major force in improving literacy in Cuba. At the start of his literacy campaign, the literacy rate in Cuba was between 60 and 75%.He determined that the lack of educational facilities was the main reason for the depressed literacy rate.
In order to increase literacy, Guevara enlisted the help of volunteers including popular educators, workers from factories and 100,000 students between the ages of 10 and 19 and sent them to go out and teach the illiterate people of Cuba how to read. During this time, the volunteers stayed with the poor people eliminating class boundaries and eight months later, all their combined efforts resulted in a jump in Cuba’s literacy rate to 96%!
It was hailed as one of the world’s greatest educational accomplishments of the 20th century.

He wanted to start a revolution in the whole world but got killed by the Cia.
I think he is still the face of revolution, you still see alot of people with tshirts and other stuff from Che Guevara.
When there is a protest everyone should wear Che Guevara masks!

Agreed. He is very rare political figure in the history.
Is the story about his fight against vampire (during the civil war) legend or just rumor? Maybe I watch Hollywood too much. But frankly I heard many legends what all the first men of the States do, great things (or they all are Hollywood's work again?).

No joke. The CIA was directly involved in his capture and the eventual execution. The CIA was well supported by Klaus Barbie, the German neo-Nazi. Wikipedia claims that he was executed by Mario Terán, a Bolivian. But nowadays, the truth has been uncovered. It was CIA operatives, who executed him.

Napoleon Bonaparte was indeed a great man... Besides being a great military leader he has contributed in various different ways.. The way he had reorganized the legal structure of France was revolutionary..
Mine is Napoleon Bonaparte too! Although for reasons different than Noviapriani. My reason is because of Napoleon's enforcement of the 'Napoleonic Code' to areas where he conquered.
The Napoleonic code is a revolutionary set of laws in its time which allowed freedom of religion, not allowing privileges based on birth and selection of civil servants based on merit!
The Napoleonic code was subsequently adopted by many countries in the world! It is not unfair to say that we might not have the many liberties we have today without him!

Obama  tough for  Medicare or 'Obamacare' as many people like to call it. He realized the need for cheap & affordable healthcare for US citizens and pushed for the bill to pass through despite heavy opposition from his political opponents.

In the past, if you get sick as a US citizen, you had to pay an arm and a leg for healthcare expenses and that financially devastated many families whereas countries like Canada already had free healthcare for a long time.

It was just unthinkable that a developed first world country like US did not have a plan to afford to provide medical care for its citizens whereas their neighboring countries can. I'm glad that Obama has now fixed the issue.

Holy shit where to start.......

Obama did not provide healthcare to anyone. He gave a handout to insurance companies by using the threat of government force to compel people to buy a commercial product. Do you know who is paying the IRS penalties? The same poor people that this abomination of a bill was supposed to help.

Also, a lot of mid-sized and small-sized companies were forced to close their operations, after Obama made it mandatory for the employer to provide healthcare for the employees.

"The US economy added 217,000 jobs in May. The unemployment rate held steady at 6.3%, a five-and-a-half year low.

With last month’s job growth, the US has finally recovered all of the jobs it lost during the Great Recession. (That’s without adjusting for population growth; economists estimate there are about 7 million more working-age Americans today than there were at the previous employment peak in January 2008.) "

Reading comprehension is not your strong point obviously.

That did not address pay or benefits.

Nice try though- clearly a lawyer in the making

What Obama and company will not do is have this question asked:

"Of those that have lost their jobs and got ones back- how many have a job situation equal or better then what they originally lost."

That chart is hardly a good representation of people who are underemployed. It only points out people who are working part time because they cannot obtain a full time job when the definition of underemployment not only encompasses that, but anyone in any job that is not being paid a wage/working a job that utilizes their full scope of skills and talents.

A computer engineer of 15 years working full time as a grunt for the TSA still has a full time job with benefits but is horribly underemployed. Underemployment isnt strictly about hours.

Genghis Khan

He created a peace called pax mongolica that help the social, cultural, and economic life of the inhabitants of the vast Eurasian territory that the Mongols conquered. It help ease the communication and commerce. He and his predecessors create trade routes that link West to East. He created a much faster pony express. He promote/choose based on your merits and loyalty not by lineage. He does not discriminate religions.

That will be an overestimation.

1. His army was huge. Many times bigger than most of the European armies.
2. His military technology was much better than the Europeans.
3. If the Europeans were united, then he could have been defeated easily.

Russia tried so hard to erase Genghis Khan from history and discredits his genius and achievements. Usually the victor writes the history but in mongol's case it was written by the loser. That why they demonize the mongols.

Most of the time his army is outnumbered. He uses deception, superior tactics, superior weapons, great mobility, experienced and discipline soldiers to win almost every war. He uses extensive intelligence network before they conquer a kingdom.

The mongols can survive from the horse milk and blood. They don't need to cook they just put the meat under than saddle to soften the meat and eaten raw. They can travel 300 kilometers in 3 days. Each soldier brings a thick fermented milk that can fed them for 10 days. They can live off the land and needs very little supply. Each mongol army brings 5 horses each. Each mongol army wears silk under the armor to make the arrow that pierced the armor can be easily remove without further wound. They also uses gunpowder and smoke.

The mongol commander usually on top of the hill where he can see the whole view of the battle field and give commands using flags and drums while those Europeans commanders fights besides his soldiers.

The knights with their flashy armors has no chance against the mongol superior tactics. The mongols divided their forces and attack Poland to make a diversion. Most of the European armies are just a sitting ducks. If the mongol is serious in conquering Europe the can conquer it with no problems. While half of the mongol army conquer Europe the other half was also conquering china.

I would like to ad another great name Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Oct. 2, 1869-Jan. 30, 1948) used non-violent civil disobedience to lead the second most populous nation in the world, India, to independence from the occupying British.

His non-violent campaign was an utter failure. It was the more aggressive campaigns by Indians such as Subhash Chandra Bose which gave India freedom from the British. The policies of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on the other hand caused millions of civilian deaths in the post-independence religious riots.

No one mention Genghis Khan?

why would anyone see that barbaric warlord as his favorite political figure?

Mine is Spartacus as he created an army of gladiators and slaves which rose from 70 to over 40 000 men

It's interesting how Romans forced them to kill for their own fun, and when the tables turned it wasn't that fun as they had to fight each other :)
His acts teach a good lesson :)
Yes,Spartacus,he had a lot of courage to do what he did and it that time when Romans were ruling the world..... i am curious, did they found out his real name?

nope, it's lost in history
but some of his friends called him "The Bob" I think, don't think it was his name though :D

The Indian history is written by the British.

They will do all they could to discredit anti-British Indian leaders such as Subhas Chandra Bose and Prem Sahgal, while praising the pro-British activists such as Nehru and Gandhi.

Oh, what do you like most about Gandhi? :)

He seems alright but I don't think non-violent methods can achieve much when you are faced with a violent and unethical enemy who would use force and violence against you... He was lucky the brits were more empathetic and are focusing on a policy of decolonization during that era. Imagine if he used that tactic to try to gain independence from China or Russia.. Lol I don't think it would have ended well.

I am not an expert in this subject, but one of my Indian friends had a lot of legal trouble, after he shared a link to a similar article (not sure whether it was the same article posted by you or not) in his Facebook profile. He was fired from his job, an FIR was filed against him, and the cops took him to custody accusing him of inciting hatred.

Good Riddance!!!

FACT: The national debt more than quadrupled on Reagan's watch, from $700 billion to nearly $3 trillion. The trade deficit also more than quadrupled, to $137.3 billion. The budget imbalances--the exact opposite of Reagan's goal--were partly the result of the military buildup and partly because neither the administration nor Congress made any significant reductions in domestic spending. But the largest single reason for the mounting deficits was that the vaunted "supply-side" tax cuts failed to deliver their promised economic growth. In the six years of the Reagan presidency after the recession ended, the nation's private wealth grew by 8 percent. In contrast, in the five years between 1975 and 1980, a period often described by Reagan as unproductive, private wealth increased 31 percent.

Deal with it.

Reagan took America from being the world's largest creditor to being the world's largest debtor.
We don't even have to get into his scandals or his love for the Taliban to discern that he was a mediocre president at best.
Also he admitted he's the best president of my lifetime.
But that's not setting the bar very high ;D

I have a couple of people who have inspired the way I see the world.

Peter Kropotkin

George Orwell

And in newer times what Enric Durant did in Spain I find truly inspiring:

Took up upwards of 60 loans from 30 different banks in spain totalling 492 000 euros, gave it all away to anticapitalist organizations so that they could grow and is now on the run from the law, some of the projects can be seen here:

https://calafou.org/en <-- Occupied permaculture/hacklab outside of Barcelona, this is where Amir Taaki has been working from lately(darkwallet, etc).
http://cooperativa.cat/en/ <-- a cooperative of cooperatives building a seperate economy/society based on anarchist principles of mutual aid and voluntary participation.

President Reagan's philosophy when it came to dealing with America's enemies was "Peace through strength."

That's a good philosophy to have, I think.

President Reagan's philosophy when it came to dealing with America's enemies was "Peace through strength."

That's a good philosophy to have, I think.

Except it led to the support of genocide in Guatemala.

Reagan was really pretty bad at foreign affairs, very inhumane, often downright illegal, and started off fairly poorly at being able to manage the Soviet Union.

Aside from direct support for death squads in Latin America, and the support of the genocide against the Mayans in Guatemala, we also directly funded a devastating civil war in Angola, fomented instability in the DR Congo, pretty much stood alone in recognizing and supporting apartheid in South Africa, acted rashly and with little understanding in Lebanon, lost the momentum of Camp David by ignoring the entire thing, botched the handling of Gaddafi, brought the US recklessly close to conflict with the Soviet Union (until he reversed course), and was generally fairly sloppy in his foreign affairs dealings. I might not rank him as bad as Nixon and Kissinger, but he engaged in a lot of immoral diplomacy that Clinton, George W. Bush, Obama and perhaps even HW Bush couldn't have even dreamed of getting away with (though Bush W. tried).

He had zero foreign policy experience going into the presidency but simultaneously had very strong feelings concerning it and the result was fairly disastrous for global stability at first. It was only really after he got caught with the Iran-Contra scandal that he got his ducks in a row foreign policy wise (so for most of his presidency he was largely inept).

One of his largest foreign policy successes was in Afghanistan and that move left the Taliban in power via his "whatever we need to do to win" strategy.

i admire john f. Kennedy. it seems he was a politician who actually cared about the rights of the people. he tried warning us of the system which rules the world today. i also like that he was once a soldier (a sailor in the navy) i hate the way politicians these days send men to war these days. It's better to have a president who know the affects of war.

Agreed. He is very rare political figure in the history.
Is the story about his fight against vampire (during the civil war) legend or just rumor? Maybe I watch Hollywood too much. But frankly I heard many legends what all the first men of the States do, great things (or they all are Hollywood's work again?).
yes Abraham Lincoln is very rare political figure in the history. Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809 – April 15, 1865) was the 16th president of the United States, serving from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. Lincoln led the United States through its Civil War—its bloodiest war and its greatest moral, constitutional and political crisis. In so doing he preserved the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the federal government, and modernized the economy.
