Title: Would you rather:...

Would you rather: Make a lot of money doing a job that makes you miserable or barely make ends meet doing something you love? Thoughts?

Make a lot of money doing a job that makes me miserable, till I saved up enough, then do something I love.

Anyway, it depend on the person, is s/he is need to have a lot of money? Or is s/he capable of enduring that 'barely'. I think when we love something, we can go through that 'barely'...

I have friends who loved taking photographs and cooking. Their parents told them 'you can't make a living doing those things. stop playing around!' but they persevered and now they are professionals in their own field! (One friend has his own restaurant)
My photographer friend even gets sponsored to travel around and take pictures of beautiful places like the Himalayas because his skills are just that good!

Do a job with plenty of money and be miserable for a while but if the job is similar to a broker your health could be at risk. In the end you take the fast car or the slow one both will arrive at there destination but one is more dangerous  ;)

I'm actually planning on doing the former pretty soon here, depending on salary. It'll give me a lot of experience, and I'll have quite a lot in the bank, but life will be hell.

After I build up quite a savings, and experience, I'll go on from there. I might have my first child at that point, maybe not. Not sure.

What if you get sick from that "life of hell"?You will have to invest all your savings in you health .......so is it worth that job ?

Everyone wants to do what they love to do Of course, not hard to choose, IF YOU NEED TO CHOOSE BETWEEN MONEY AND HAPPINESS? Of course you choose happiness without any doubt.   :) If we are happy what we need more? Nothing.

I'm currently in the barely make ends meet phase, in fact, I'm technically in debt, my parents are being nice enough to support me so I have no choice but to make sure I work my ass off so I can make some money, I have absolutely no idea how well it will go, this being the internet and all :P I think doing what you enjoy is always the best drive for actually making a lot of money because otherwise if it was something you'd hated then you'd never put in any effort.

That said, I've tried my best to keep costs down, I'm technically getting two subjects for the price of one ( University is stupidly expensive and inflexible for someone like me ) and I'm staying at home to cut the costs even more, so while that leaves me with pretty much no social life I'd say it's worth it considering how much I've learned in the past couple of years and yes, I find this infinitely more enjoyable than the idea of an office job or going to university.

All I want now is to be self-sufficient and have my own house! >_<

^Get a real job, problem solved. 8)

I can tell you I once applied for absolutely standard cleaner job ( I promise I wasn't being picky in the slightest, not like some of the people out there with masters degrees ) so I could work part time or something and it was taken the very same day, not just the next day, the exact same day it was posted up, I had called them up to see if that would increase my chances and get their attention.

People who tell unemployed people to get a job don't know that there really aren't any fucking jobs out there, not even basic ones, might be worth having a search around again but I'm very doubtful and I'm almost ready to release my products now anyway and I want to see how well that will go first, plus, building a business is way more fun despite the stress lol.

I was planning on living in the environment for about 4 years total (on and off over an 8 year period). The stress from 4 years of working this type of environment vs the chance of being a nervous wreck due to financials not being 100% there, I'll take the former.

As for my health:physically, my health would be improved. Mentally, it'll be a burden.

I would be miserable and make a lot of money from my job. Only because living standards are going increase forever, and the money will make a difference.

Esp, when taxes are forever increasing as well.

The pay will also make up for me to take vacations too.

If I had my choice, I'd probably work the shitty job just long enough to build up a decent reputation as a freelancer (or until I get fired, whichever comes first), and then just focus on my energies on being a freelancer. A freelancer's income is pretty variable -- sometimes I can pick up a lot of work and sometimes no one seems to know I exist -- but it can work if you just remember to put your extra money into Bitcoin or something during the good months.

I can say what I will do for sure as I am doing it from quite a time :-)

I do what I love to do and even if sometimes I have bills to pay from over two months and I haven't got money to buy new things I do what I do and I believe one day fruit of my labour will come.

I was working for eight years in a job that wasn't my dream but was giving much much better money than I have now but I asked myself what is more important?

As Bob Dylan said "What’s money? A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and goes to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do".

So, nothing like doing what we like.

I would rather make a lot of money making other people miserable :D No really, I would rather do something for the "greater good" something that benefits society and improves the quality of life, than something of little social value like selling stocks. Sorry Gordon Gekko, greed is not good!! I think that was a mistake...when avarice was no longer considered a sin!!

"People who have the opinion that money cannot buy happiness actually don't know where to shop..."

This is a very famous quote and I agree to it completely... Money can happiness indirectly.. If you have money.. you can indulge in various things and fulfill your desires, otherwise you just learn to be content..

Why not make lots of money, then after you have the money saved up, use that money to do what you love?
LOL it is a good idea. And if you know how to invest, you can always retire early!

I can't imagine doing something I don't love. I like to feel like I'm working towards my passion and actually building something meaningful in society.

Even if I have to risk starving, it'll be okay because you only get one life. Don't waste it living someone else's.

There are people doing that already. lol they start online blogs and write reviews for TV shows. You can also write articles about TV shows on review sites and get paid per article or sometimes they pay you for each thousand view!

There is also an app where you can make $$ watching Tv. I don't think it's enough to 'make a living off' but it's still something. :D

Barely make ends meat and it's not even close.

The hardest part is finding something you love though. I don't think that's easy at all. Finding something that interests me for a short while is not hard. But something that I truly love and want to spend my life doing? Not so easy to find.

I left a job that was highly paid, to run a bitcoin farm, and so far i dont regret my choice.
Profits are alot smaller than i thought, but i make it up by doing more btc-related stuff.

Depends at what stage of life you asked me.  If I was single and not dating I would choose to be happy and be broke.

Now I have a family and whenever I plan my income and spending I'm not thinking about my needs usually.  My family gives me happiness - job is just a means to keep them.

If you have the option of getting your own paying job then I'd definitely agree with that, build your skills in your free time like over the weekend or something, that said, if you really enjoy what you do you can be far more productive. I could actually do a standard job fairly well and the employer would probably have few complaints but when I'm doing something like Jewellery or Artwork I'm on fire in comparison :D and it's just because of the fact that I enjoy it.

Yes, you are right... Material things are of no value if one isn't happy with this life.. But don't you think nowadays these are the actual things which get happiness from.. Whether you agree to the fact or not but it is material things which are actually more important to us..
If we go on a vacation.. we are happy
if we buy a new smartphone - we rejoice..
If we buy toys for kids - they become and so do we..

So money is very important in today's world to taste happiness..

I feel there has to be a balance between money and happiness.. Both of them are equally essential.. If you are unable to meet your basic needs, you cannot stay happy at any cost.. On the other hand, if you are running after money 24 hrs, you will be too stressed to experience happiness...

Balance is the key you see!

For sure. It can be hard to get pieces to market, though, in the sense of making a living. My girlfriend makes/sells stuff on Etsy, and some purchases come in here and there, but there is a million and ten people to compete with. So it's definitely just a "on-the-side" kind of thing.

Kinda depends on what you mean by making alot of money.  If we are talking insanely huge amounts why not work super hard for a year or two and then simply retire?  If your talking about pays really well but not retirement-in-a year or two well, I would absolutely opt for the happy ends meat scenario.

I think this question completely depends on how much money is it?  How long do I have to do this job I don't like?

If I did it for 10 years would I have enough to retire and do something I love?

If I had to work a normal shift for 40 years no matter what, I guess I would rather do what I love than make more money...

However, if I just had to do 10 years and I would be set, I would probably take the money and then spend the next 30 years doing what I love...trade offs I guess

Hopefully in the next 3-4 years Bitcoin will skyrocket to a few hundred thousand...
If I get a couple of Bitcoin by then I could do the latter :D

I'd most likely , as answered before , stick with the former until I could afford to live pretty well without working on it.

The question I would ask is : If you had a choice right now to do what you love or take a high paying job and cannot change your path ever later , which would you choose ?

A real case is Robert Frost. His parents wanted him to study Physics and Chemistry , in order to go the mundane path , but in the end he dropped them for Literature , as was his dream. His poem "The road not taken" is about this.

So, if you had a choice between a venture that may or may not pay out or a mundane , miserable job that would give you a comfortable , yet average life which would you take ? As Robert Frost said in the aforementioned poem , "Yet knowing how way leads on to way,I doubted if I should ever come back." Once you choose your path , it would be extremely unlikely that you would receive another opportunity to switch paths again.
