Title: Which Block Explorer do you use ?
Post by: 100bitcoin on June 02, 2014, 07:59:08 PM
When you check an address balance or a transaction status online, which block explorer do you use ? If you run a service depending on a third party API, which block explorer's API you rely upon ?

I enjoy using blockr.io or blockchain.info
They are both elegantly designed and function well!

Blockchain.info all the way! Sometimes blockexplorer.

1. BlockChain.info

2. Blockr.io

3. HelloBlock.io

4. BitEasy.com

5. BlockExplorer.com

p.s. BlockChain.info BitcoinD is sometimes not in sync with the n/w and thereby giving wrong result. So I am trying to get over with my old habit of sticking to BlockChain.info. I would also like to know, who else is providing reliable API service other than BlockChain.info for free ?

id recommend businesses to NEVER use one service.

there may be reasons why one service is delayed, or has iffy results (yes it has happened)
especially with users funds have your API triple check payments using 3 balance checkers.

I will use blockchain.info most of the time because my wallet is there. If I see something strange or need to verify something like no confirmations for a long time, I use blockr.io and blockexplorer.com to double check.

I've only used blockchain.info.

Thanx... do u provide something like https://blockchain.info/q ?

e.g. I'll provide an address as input parameter to get its balance in the output. In blockchain.info, I can do it as...

https://blockchain.info/q/addressbalance/1EzwoHtiXB4iFwedPr49iywjZn2nnekhoj

What to do on BitEasy ?

Moreover, is your explorer code open source or is it built on Abe ?

Our code is not open source I am afraid, and no it's not build on Abe, it's a complete custom solution from the ground up.

When on a computer or my tablet, blockchain.info

I also use the phone app Coin Ticker as it shows alt coins and lets you set up a portfolio based on addresses you input.

Generally I just default to blockchain.info. But recently it was acting funny and not showing recent blocks, and the search was broken. I stumbled onto blockr.io, and have come to like it.

Blockexplorer.com was experiencing strange database/search issues at the same time as Blockchain.info a couple days ago. Not sure what that was about. Ditto on blockr.io, though I'm not talking API.

If everyone was glitching, then it probably has to do something with the actual blockchain.

I am CEO and founder of https://apicoin.io, the first bitcoin PaaS and we currently have the market share. We currently have a couple huge (Making more than 250,000 api calls daily between just those companies) bitcoin businesses using us in production. I would be glad to work with anyone on this forum to make their experience with my company, the best they ever have using an api. This means if you need a custom plan, api call, or anything else to connect to our site, just email me and let me know. I will make it happen.

I have been in your position, and I hate when an api fails on me or doesn't give me the data I need, trust me that will not happen on my platform.

You have to register which is free to get prices of the plans, we are also in a redesign so it will be easier to find this information in the future.

We are extremely different from blockchain.info and biteasy.com we are a highly scalable, robust, secure api to the bitcoin network, we are more for developers than the general public. We do have a free plan so you can try the service, I recommend you actually wait a bit we are moving to a huge server today and the api part is down currently to make the move easier. Which to be honest is the first time the api has been brought down since I started the service.

There's the free plan that's limited to 200 Api Calls/day then there's also the individual plan that allows 5000/day for .06BTC/month. And finally, the Business plan, which includes 10000 Api Calls/day and costs .11BTC/Month. The Individual Plan is best for most users. Example uses for this plan can include watching an address' balance, watching for new blocks, watching for new transactions, etc.

AFAIK multiple high traffic services, including some busy online cassino, are running on blockchain.info API indeed.

We are really two different beast, blockchain you can setup a wallet easily, use their api and it is great to prove your idea or concept in the market. APICoin is really the next step in that. We can easily allow you to set up an offline cold storage and use our service to check the blockchain for deposits in a safe manner or use our web hooks to contact your servers again in safe and secure manner above any other current api. It also allows you to broadcast many signed transactions in one api call. Sign transactions can't be tempered by us, we can't change the outputs or inputs once they are signed, that means we can safely broadcast them with little trust to our server. We also respect the privacy of a user, and never announced any of partnerships unless the company does first publicly which is kinda a double edge sword because some people won't use us unless they know some big people use us and it makes it harder to actually gain clients. I think privacy is more important than people using us because company XYZ uses us. I also want people to use us by the features we offer not because we are highly trust by a certain section of bitcoin.

We also put a lot of weight on security and trustless of our service. If you notice you don't trust us with any funds, or any private keys for any api calls, and that is a motto of our service.

If you also notice I have been in bitcoin longer than anyone that is running a similar service, I been using bitcoin for over 3 yrs now and I been on this forum for 2 of those years. I am subscribed to every pull request, commit, and comment on the bitcoin core github page as well as the BIP github page. I know the protocol extremely well, and you are getting that expertise when using my service.

https://api.biteasy.com/blockchain/v1/addresses/1EzwoHtiXB4iFwedPr49iywjZn2nnekhoj

After you make the call, you will get a JSON structure and all you have to do is to check the data->balance field.

Thanx... looks neat. will be checking it :)

Cool :)
Let us know if you have any questions. You can also post in the official Biteasy.com thread here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=336876.0).

What are your send & receive API ? Can u please point to the links ?

At the moment we only provide block explorer related functionality but this will change in the near future.

I just found out about blockr.io from this thread, I will check it out.

This thread is very informative.  I've always used blockchain.info and frankly I always thought that was the only one and the "official" one, which really doesn't make sense as there is no Bitcoin "authority" or official company or owner.

Pretty much everyone uses Blockchain.info. In fact, most of the time I just check my balances there instead of actually firing up my wallet.

Blockr.io looks nice too. And it seems they support Peercoin and Litecoin and a couple others as well as Bitcoin.

I know a few people from this thread wanted to know when our move to new servers were complete. I can say that it is completed and we passed all our internal test to make sure the data is correct. The blockchain we hold I call it A1 because we examined all the data after the move.

Also we will not be moving any more! We will start growing horizontally now. It only took us a couple months of production to go from a little couple of servers, to now a big boy server, to handle our loads.

We are not on any VPS system, we are on a dedicated server provided by http://www.bitronictech.net/aff.php?aff=061. Why we choose them over AWS or APP engine, well a couple reason. One is that I actually worked for a datacenter at my college, before I got into bitcoins so I actually do tweak some very low level settings. Every ounce of power you can squeeze of a system, makes my project that much better than the next one. This rules out google app engine. Two I want to support the bitcoin eco-system. If you read some of my early post I actually called for someone to start a hosting PaaS for bitcoin. It would sky rocket, and you wouldn't have any of the issues you have now with hacked AWS accounts.

My startup has paid everything so far in bitcoin. Making it so I never have to get a bank account for my business!

Trust me this some powerful hardware, I know what I am doing and the site has yet to be down excluding today when I had to move the huge blockchain database. Which as you can see went as planned.

There are a fair number of ways you can pay for things in bitcoin in non-traditional ways. You can use gyft (for consumers), get vendors to use coinbase or bitpay for your specific transaction.

That is our sending api https://apicoin.io/api/v1/doc/#pushtx we don't want have access to your funds as that is dangerous and even if you trust us we could get hacked and then your funds would be gone. So by doing this you can signed your own transactions which is pretty easy now of days, and we will send it to the bitcoin network.

But, is not there any receive API that does the following ?

i. Generate a new address

ii. Make a callback when there is an amount received at this address

iii. Forward that amount to another fixed address

I could be wrong but I always thought that while the blockchain is always the same, technically there is no "official" block explorer right? Is Blockchain.info any more official than the other ones out there? Did Satoshi or the Bitcoin Foundation endorse any particular block explorer?

EDIT: So it seems that Blockchain.info is a platinum member of the Bitcoin Foundation and its founder Roger Ver was also one of the founding members of the Bitcoin Foundation. So maybe it is the official one?

There no "official" in bitcoin, since bitcoin is decentralized.
So, even for the bitcoin core wallet, you won't see the word "official" https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet :)

Same here. I use Blockchain.info but I switch to Blockr.io when it's down. For example, it's running a bit slowly at the moment and I keep getting CloudFlare errors. A quick check on Downforeveryoneorjustme.com seems to suggest that the problem isn't limited to me and the site seems to be down for everyone. Not quite sure why.

And thanks for the links! I didn't know there were so many of them. Interestingly, one of them (Blockexplorer.com) was made by theymos who is also the owner of this forum.

And when it is not working, I switch to blockr.io simply because of the slightly shorter name. :)

I was checking the SR auction winner's address on all of them. Looks like bitcoinchain.com is defunct. It is throwing Error 500 for this address => http://bitcoinchain.com/block_explorer/a/1a8LDh3qtCdMFAgRXzMrdvB8w1EG4h1Xi

Moreover, it showing wrong balance on my address !!!

When you check an address balance or a transaction status online, which block explorer do you use ?

I use blockchain.info, blockr.io, biteasy.com (in that order).
The search function on blockexplorer.com is really very slow IMO.

Most of the time blockchain.info. I know the interface and I know where to find everything I'm looking for. While using other explorers I tend to have to understand the interface first. Sometimes I use blockr as well, it's a nice and clean site!

For Bitcoin?

Think most people use blockchain.info . Or they run bitcoin-qt, but I don't know if it is possible to see other's adresses with the qt.

Other altcoins ahve their own block explorers too, but I'm not used to use them.

Blockchiain.info is likely the most reliable "supernode" out there and the most reliable block explorers. It is very user friendly, however you can change settings to give you more "advanced" information if you need it. It also has a lot of useful information that can be useful to both the casual user and the "dev"

I primarily use Blockchain.info most of the time, for transaction checking, mining pool distribution, charts, and other assorted info.  This site seems to get the most support from the Bitcoin community, and well spoken Bitcoin figurehead Andreas Antonopolous actually works for them as Chief Security Officer.

I think Blockchain.info suffered some severe slowness a little while ago with unconfirmed transactions, so I use blockr.IO as a backup if Blockchain.info is down.

Blockchain.info is still the one having the best functionality.
For example, I can put any addresses as watch-only, and with the payment notification feature, I will be notified with email, SMS or Skype messages for any transaction to and from the address within seconds. This is something none of the other block explorers can do as of today AFAIK.

That's great! Blocktrail is becoming better day by day. Just a simple question, using PHP, can this be used for faucets?

When you check an address balance or a transaction status online, which block explorer do you use ? If you run a service depending on a third party API, which block explorer's API you rely upon ?

I've always used blockchain. Have tried blockexplorer once or twice when in was down, not so good.

http://explorer.chain.com/

Seems it is not so good from navigation point of view, but offers an extensive and documented API. If u r a developer and have used it, please provide your point of view regarding the API.

Thanx... added in OP.

I found https://insight.bitpay.com. It is a great one because it is offering the source code on Github. It is also stable, because LocalBitcoins is using it. Should be included.

It also gives some incorrect double spend flag sometime. In those cases I do a recheck with blockr.io.

To say it is the most popular explorer it does have a lot of things it needs to improve. I used to use it as my go to one but it doesn't work properly on my mobile now and never lets me search for addresses and just takes me back to the home screen. I now mainly use https://www.blocktrail.com/BTC

I have 2 clear favorites, one for browsing form the PC and for the mobile:

https://blockchain.info/ for the PC, which gives all the details, especially when scripts & coinbase is enabled.
However it sucks on mobile. Not even the basic information can be understood.

For mobile I prefer https://insight.bitpay.com/ which renders great.

-Coinprism: https://www.coinprism.info/

Some comments on the ones that are currently listed (did some testing):

3. Blockexplorer: Clunky, slow, unreliable. It often fails to display updated transactions, sometimes it won't even be able to load an address at all. I respect that they were pretty much the first block explorer (or the first?), but there are much better alternatives out there.

Same here. I just wish BlockTrail makes their PHP based send/receive API easier to integrate.

i find myself using blockr.io more than blockchain.info. it has way less errors and the ui looks very clean. blockchain.info needs to work on their bugs that they have had for a very long time.

I used to like blockchain.info, but considering they have been down so frequently, I installed a local instance of Abe.   Its quite convenient and quick to be able to look up transactions without having to visit an external site.

Check it out: https://github.com/bitcoin-abe/bitcoin-abe

despite all the problems and down times associated with blockchain.info , i still prefer using it for checking stuff out . because i am more comfortable with the layout.

but i also use btc.blockr.io and blocktrail if i need to double check something or if blockchain.info  is down.

When you check an address balance or a transaction status online, which block explorer do you use ? If you run a service depending on a third party API, which block explorer's API you rely upon ?

Update: I'm listing out the outcome of this thread here...

1. https://blockchain.info/

2. https://blockr.io/

3. https://blockexplorer.com/

4. https://www.biteasy.com/

5. https://chain.so/btc

6. https://helloblock.io/

7. http://bitcoinchain.com/block_explorer

8. https://bkchain.org/btc

9. http://bitinfocharts.com/bitcoin/

10. http://www.blocktrail.com

11. http://explorer.chain.com/

A few more (they all seem to work well):

-BlockCypher: https://live.blockcypher.com/

-BitPay: https://insight.bitpay.com/

-blockinfo: http://blockinfo.org/

-Coinprism: https://www.coinprism.info/

Some comments on the ones that are currently listed (did some testing):

3. Blockexplorer: Clunky, slow, unreliable. It often fails to display updated transactions, sometimes it won't even be able to load an address at all. I respect that they were pretty much the first block explorer (or the first?), but there are much better alternatives out there.

That's it, enjoy! I'd love to hear some feedback about my list as well if anyone has any.

Now, as blockchain.info is down, I'd like to add http://blockmeta.com to the list. :)

I'd recommend this to be added as well...

At the beginning I'm using blockchain.info from the searching results of Google, now I'm still using it, but I'm using blocktrail as an alternative option when blockchain.info say that 'Maximum concurrent requests reached' for me.

BTW I still have my main wallet at blockchain.info, which have handled my over 1BTC in total.

i think there was another one a few weeks back, i dont really remember the exact time too well, but my logic is that downtimes are a huge no no for blockchain.info, considering the services they provide; they provide a wallet service, which I personally, would like to have access to my money 100% of the time, and although the incidents were few, blockchain.info has shown vulnerabilities, and it was more or less pushed me away from their website.

It was, but unfortunately they have made too many fuckups. Especially now with the recent issue with accepting invalid txs (http://www.coindesk.com/no-satoshi-nakamoto-hasnt-moved-a-thing/), I'd say they lost their credibility.

But no worries, there are plenty alternatives which are at least as good. Some even better, imho.

you should really reconsider using blockchain.info, theyve been accepting transactions without verifying that they are legitimate, valid transactions, leading to a whole myriad of spoofed transactions. https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/3frn1d/satoshis_coins_have_not_moved_blockchaininfo_is/

I think Blockchain.info suffered some severe slowness a little while ago with unconfirmed transactions, so I use blockr.IO as a backup if Blockchain.info is down.
unconfirmed transactions have nothing to do with blockchain.info itself, as inept as that company is. if transactions are not confirming, then it would be that the miners are unable to guess the hashes to solve the blocks.

Blockchain.info has had a lot of issues lately as well as in the past in regard to its role in block exploring. When it comes to their wallet, I would highly recommend using something else. There have been multiple instances where individuals have lost their coins due to security flaws so use at your own risk.  :(

funny how you say that, as blockchain.info is actually the one that shows fake transactions because their ledger doesnt even check to see if a transaction is valid. there's actually an unconfirmed transaction (for 2 years and running) from satoshi's address on BC.i that isnt shown on any other block explorer.

It was weeks ago, i checked faucetbox first for withdrawals (not their internal transaction), and as you can see there they send from 1 address to 50 addresses payments, so i checked it first on blocktrail, and it showed it.

Then i checked it on blockchain, and blockr, and it didnt showed it. Now to my knowledge even an unconfirmed tx doesnt get withdrawed from the memory pool for 1-2 days, so i guess it was some bug.

I dont remember the transaction id anymore, but i thought i just tell you it.

BlockTrail CTO here,

I'm 100% sure BlockTrail can't show invalid transactions, our infrastructure is build around Bitcoin Core which validates transactions and blocks.

However, what you describe sounds more like a badly propagating transaction or a double spend,

so either it did not propagate to many nodes (so it never reached blockr or bc.info) because of low fee or something other funky (which I guess if they pay to 50 addresses sounds plausible that they didn't pay enough fee)

or it could have been double spend, blockr and blockchain.info only keep track of one of the 2 if someone tries to double spend something, they discard the other.
also keep in mind double spends aren't always intentional, could be excidental software failure etc.

This is another feature from blocktrail that keeps me on using their service. As an observer of Core vs XT, it is handy to show how many blocks were mined with what version of bitcoin.

Blocktrail works for me https://www.blocktrail.com/BTC

BlockTrail is best in OP's list. The only drawback they have is that their page load time is too slow.

I only use blockchain.info unless it's down. Then I use blockexplorer.com, but it's not as detailed as blockchain.info
I can check out Most Popular Addresses, Orphaned Blocks, Unconfirmed Transactions, Largest Transactions etc.

most of the actual to track a transaction I just use blocktrail.

it seems to already find and label where the coin from, so its easier to decide.

BlockTrail is best in OP's list. The only drawback they have is that their page load time is too slow.

(Blocktrail CTO here), Thanks for the feedback!

The Blocktrail Blockexplorer is a so called single-page-app, meaning it loads a whole bunch of javascript into your browser on the first page load and then doesn't really load any full pages anymore when you navigate around but instead only loads the data required to render the page in your browser.
The advantage is that once the page is loaded it's much faster to navigate around, but you're right that the first load is slower than most others!

We've added so many features that there's a lot of javascript loaded by now (for example when you visit a blockexplorer page it also already loads the code required for the wallets dashboard).

We're working on some big things at Blocktrail right now, but soon enough we'll be able to spread out attention again more across all our products and we'll take a stab at reducing the page load time.
It looks like we can easily get it down by half or more if we seperate some of the javascript and don't load it until we need it!

So for me I'am using https://www.blocktrail.com/ (switched to wallet couple of days ago when it came out) and for the blockexplorer since long time using it , best GUI ever ;D

Maybe the address that received it spent the bitcoin immediately without waiting to be confirmed at least 1 confirmation.

Blockchain.info is considered one of the worst website for me. They have a bad record of accepting invalid transaction (https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/3frn1d/satoshis_coins_have_not_moved_blockchaininfo_is) and this could potentially lead to attacks like double spending when accepting payments via their API. I prefer blocktrail.com as they have a better uptime and UI. The most important thing is probably the priority calculation, this would be beneficial for people making transactions with 0 fees and aids in the estimation.

Yes, The one I uses most is still blockchain.info. But what bother me is that sometimes it is down. I have to use alternative, like blocktrail.com, which is quite good as well.

Yeah, you have to use an alternative site when blockchain is down, but it happens rarely because of some repairing stuff

Recently as a bitcoin block explorer i am using btc.blockr.io
This because coinbase has moved from their own explorer to this website(and not to blockchain.info)
But i think it's personal preferences and i like the old one blockchain.info, clean design and simple.

Do you still remember bter hack, cryptsy collapes etc. Users hav no way to get their money back coz they give money to others. Just be cautious to use exchange. They could turn out to be scams any time soon. You shoud have full control of the private key. Ther is nothing to do with how much you have. When you withdraw the money, you need to check it whether it gets confirmed in the network! or when you send money, you need to prove you have sent it. The best way is to quote the tx for the receiver.

I think we are just the same block i am also using block chain which is the main website that where we can see lots of transaction live.. unlike other site there's no live transaction..

im using blocktrail.com it's more complete, we can calculate the fee and the time of transaction will get 1 confirmation.

Many block explorer that you can see in google.. but some explorer are low in details slow website but i can suggest to you some explorer which is you can check everything this two are good site as of now many people are using it.. blocktrail and blockchain this 2 are good.. they are different and have different feature that you can not get to other block explorer.
In blockchain you can see live transaction and for blocktrail you can see how much time consume before you receive the bitcoin or its more details than blockchain..
Never tried the other explorer.  and i think the other block explorer are very slow..

When you check an address balance or a transaction status online, which block explorer do you use ? If you run a service depending on a third party API, which block explorer's API you rely upon ?

You are missing https://explorer.bitcoin.com from your list.

It has just been re-designed and is great to use  :)
