Title: Hi, I'm new to the BTC scene
Post by: JennaK on July 19, 2014, 09:57:05 PM
Hi, I'm Jenna from Toronto, ON and I'm new to the bitcoins scene and just wanted to say hi to all of you.
Yes I'm female and yes I feel out of place, but I overheard some guy at the gym mention that he "mined" $1,000 worth of bitcoins and it kind of intrigued me.
As a student and with a bit of free time I'm going to try to obtain some bitcoins, it may help pay food.

Anyways, I just wanted to present myself and say hi.

Hello, welcome to bitcointalk!  I'm from Calgary but staying at Toronto for a while as well :)
If you have any questions about bitcoin, feel free to ask!  This community is a pretty nice one, just ignore the trolls and losers ;)

Torontoians for life (well actually, for 2 months, but oh well)!

Hi Jenna, welcome!

I bet you feel out of place because about 99.9% of this forum are guys ;D

I don't know if you want to obtain bitcoins by buying them or not but if you have an amount in bitcoins that is significant to you you should definately read about storing them safely (offline/cold storage and offline generated paper wallets).

Also don't do faucets because they are a waste of time.

And don't trust anyone with your bitcoins, there are a lot of scams/scam attempts in this forum and in Bitcoin land in general, if something looks too good to be true it probably is a scam.

Hi Jenny! I'm glad you have chosen to come here and learn more. Right off the bat though, as tempting as it sounds, I wouldn't suggest heading down the mining path. Yes, he mined $1,000 of bitcoin. But either he did it over a year ago when it was easily profitable OR he has an expensive ASIC that costs thousands of dollars. I would focus on learning more about bitcoin and maybe purchasing some through an exchange. Again, mining = not worth it (in my opinion). If you insist, though, you could buy a SCRYPT asic (still, expensive), mine an "alt coin" that is profitable, and sell for BTC. Otherwise, not really worth the effort.

Welcome to bitcointalk. :)

Bitcoin mining was easy (can be done with your gaming computer) and profitable, but I am afraid the good times are gone already.
With the development of more and more efficient ASICs, the mining difficulty has been going up rapidly and it is very hard to get profit in mining now.

That is true, I have already turned off my rig, because it is not profitable anymore and rather play games with it  :D

Welcome, Jenna.
While I agree with others that mining is not a good idea, you can earn bitcoin by selling products and services, and you can earn bitcoin by joining a signature ad campaign here on bitcointalk. :)

I agree with him. Making money at cex.io is not impossible at all. But ehhh it's definitely not the way to go nowadays. It's tempting, yes. But if you really want to be a part of bitcoin, just buy bitcoin. It's that simple.

Yes, buy and hold is the easiest and safest solution if you want to earn something without the risk of losing the initial capital.
If you want to have fun with trading, use a small percent of your holdings and play with it without touching the rest.

Do you think that buy and hold is the best option only in this particular period or will be the same also in the future?

If you believe in bitcoin, it should be the general rule for a while. Bitcoin is limited in supply and generally, if it "succeeds", will be worth way more in the future than it is now.

Hi Jenna and wellcome to the BTC world, it will be a bit hard to get any ''free'' BTC, but you may earn some (i don't recommend you to mine them since it can be really hard to get any without a decent investment in mining gear). Enjoy staying here ;)

what are you talking about specifically.... miners? to be honest, the big farms will always be 10 steps ahead of you, and they will kill your ROI. but, i could be wrong, too. :)

Generally, bitcoin mining is dead for individuals, however, there are some altcoins which may be mined with profit.

Who told you 'bitcoin mining is dead for individuals' ? ??? :) Many people are still mining. The problem is you will have to buy best miners on the market, which will cost you some $$$ . You can't tell it is dead but you can tell it is dead for individuals with small hash rate. :)

The problem is that you can hardly get any profit from buying those ASICs, after considering the increasing difficulty and your electricity bills.

Today bitcoin mining is a zero sum game. The real only way yo profit from mining is if you have cheaper then average electricity or free electricity available.

The real only way yo profit from mining is if you have cheaper then average electricity or free electricity available.

But then, it will make bitcoin mining more and more centralized as only those with significant money to buy newest ASICs and cheap electricity will join the game.

you should consider the new antminers that are about to come out, which does a minm 500gh/s. per unit.

outside from posting on the forum to get btc.

You mean the S3, right? Isn't it mining at 478 GH/s ±5% instead of minimum 500?

Welcome to the forums.

If you are looking for investment or a profit, then I would suggest buying bitcoins, and storing them in an offline wallet.

Yes, its not fun at all just looking at your coinage just sitting there, but when there is an upward shift in value you'd be in profit if you sold.

If you are in it for a hobby, then get some (relatively) cheap mining equipment. Be aware though, that this route would crush all of your hopes to get a nice profit unless bitcoin leapt in value.

I have a relative in Brockville!

Anyways, hope this helps.

Thanks

That could be risky? Couldn't bitcoins just tank? Why does everyone think its going to go up?

I see ghash.io mining like crazy.. 25bitcoins every 30~ minutes $15,000..

I like brockville btw :p

You should look at recent charts to get a better understanding of the stocks but yes you are right its a risky business but if it pays off if pays off big time.

Yes very risky, but the bitcoin community and structure (huge mining farms ala Ghash.io are popping up all the time) is such that for the past few months the price has been reasonably stable.  Back when I started doing bitcoining(new phrase?) the price was 80 USD now 620 ish.

I should have just bought!!!

Yes, bitcoin price is very unstable. It could go up or down 10% daily, and it has dropped from $1100 to $600 in just 2 weeks.
Therefore, you should just put part of your money in bitcoin rather than putting all your life saving in bitcoin.

Why does everyone think its going to go up?

Because we are on bitcointalk lol. :P

We've been conditioned that way because of the vast amount of scams that are constantly going.
