That'd be an interesting system. I don't know whether such a system exists, but you can send BTC via SMS. You can even send BTC via effectively every means of communication!
Quick google-search yields a site that may be a scam, beware! https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=252145.0 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=252145.0)

I know, that's why I posted a link for a service that claims to do exactly what you're looking for. But like I said, be careful, people say that it's a scam. Always be careful and google if a service you're about to use may be a scam.

So I guess you better stay clear of those then  :-\ Maybe charging you via a telephone bill just isn't safe for the service provider since they may not receive their money but you have the bitcoins, which can't be charged back by definition!

Yes sir. I think most bitcoiners want to bury their heads in the sand on this one though..

service providors that do SMS charges only get at most 50% of the SMS fee.. so if you want $600 of bitcoin, expect to send 200 texts valued at $6 each, costing you $1200 just so the other guy receives his $600

There used to be services like this back when bitcoin was a bit cheaper and I'm sure there will be a service that comes out somewhere that would do it again, but expect to pay a hefty premium for your coins.

In the US you are generally not able to buy bitcoin with your phone. There are some places in the world where this is supported, however you would only be able to purchase small amounts. You should expect to pay prices that are way above the market rate as well because charges to your phone bill can be disputed (read: reversed)

I don't know if it is working, but Coinbase provides a service which allows you to view balance, buy, sell, send or receive bitcoin.

I think this would actually be a great service for those who find it hard to get a hold of btc or just don't trust exchnages, though the fees probably would be ridic.

It would not be good as the fees would be too much for anyone to purchase therefore a poor business plan its been tried before and has failed every single time within the first few weeks.

Why would the fees be too much? People seem to purchase other things via text at extortionate rates so this could work.

I agree, this could actually work. I have known people to purchase credits on sites such as Facebook using text messages so this really is just the same thing only it would be bitcoin. I don't see there being any high rates if they just take off you the money it costs to send the text message plus what they owe in bitcoins.

I disagree. I think paying for bitcoin via SMS (aka your phone bill) would carry the same risks as accepting credit cards. The owner of the phone account could claim that their phone was stolen and they did not authorize the payment, the merchant would then be left on the hook for the disputed transaction.

Does someone even read the question? He wanted to know if it was possible to buy Bitcoin via SMS, i.e. via paying for them over you Prepaid account or your phone bill! But as far as I know all the services seem to be scams. I guess back-charging phone bill transactions is too easy for the user.

The OP was wanting to buy BTC via SMS, not trade it via SMS.

I really do not think it would be very feasible.

37Coins (https://www.37coins.com/en/) is doing the Bitcoins via SMS.

Could be used for Western nations, I suppose, but intended for populations not accustomed to smartphones & Internet connectivity.

I agree with this. There are too many risks with accepting SMS for payment for BTC. Unlike with a credit card payment it would be very difficult to verify that a SMS payment was authorized by the account owner as the person who setup the SMS payment would likely be in possession of the phone.

Yeah, but can you buy BTC there by just sending them a text message, pay for the BTC via that message and then get your BTC. OP wants to buy BTC and pay for them using his regular phone bill, yet everyone suggests services that allow him to send BTC which he didn't ask for :)

Not yet, but I could see coinkite implementing somehting like this in cooperation with coinbase ect

Woah, better stay away from those companies. I guess they're not legit. People can claim the money back they pay via their phone bills. You could also buy BTC via someone else's phone! That'd be theft, man!

I think what you are saying is one and the same. If you pay for something via SMS then you are paying for it via your phone bill (unless you are prepaid then you are paying out of the amount you have on credit at the phone company.

Would be cool if you could just text "1 btc" or something like that to a specific number and have it auto debited from your account or added to phone bill. Phone bill could be a bad idea though since so many people would end up not paying

This is exactly true. The phone company would likely not want to take on this kind of credit risk. Especially when the average phone bill is in the double digits, and they would be potentially lending out hundreds if not thousands of dollars for 1 bitcoin.

The phone's bill is paid with fiat other than btc yet. How can you send SMS like sending btc charged from your mobile bill?

Umm, yeah it is, but it doesn't matter. OP was asking about a service that allows you to buy BTC with your phone bill or already paid for prepaid money. And all he gets is people telling him how he can send BTC via SMS... I think it is sad that people are just writing something without actually reading the initial post!
