Bitcoin is bad in its current avatar. That’s why it’s the villain of my latest novel

Right now the Bitcoin is about anonymity. It uses a protocol called TOR (The Onion Router) that allows the giver and receiver to remain anonymous, which makes it dangerous. In my book, it's used by the criminal underworld.

And I guess this is the portion which will be picked up when politicians / decision makers start gathering information about bitcoin.  :P

Yup, it is dangerous when Half cooked nuts make comments like this, and then the mainstream media picks it up and runs with it.

Villan or not? I don't know. Few months back, I've had brief passionate discussion with Mr. Subramanian about Bitcoin and bitcoin. He had amazing understanding of both like scholar. I've been contemplating on other side since that meeting.

He seems to have got his facts wrong in this interview. His understanding can be improved.  :)

If you're talking about my facts/understanding then frankly I'm struggling to improve when it comes to tech giant like bitcoin. And if you've questioning his understanding/facts then, you might be right Mr. Satoshi.

Sarcasm does not suit you, my friend. I will not join issue with you on this one. All you have to do is read the posts in this thread and you will have your answer.

How do they get the figure? Though I am not surprised its this slow. Barrier to entry is too high.
Would be easier to get them into alts and then BTC, but then these alts are screwed at the moment.

Picked up the book and almost done reading it. Very nice indeed!
Surprising that the same person did the interview mentioned in OP.

Yeah.. It was a decent read. Very twisted Indian family drama with Bitcoin all over the place.
Been a while since I have read a full book without keeping it down.
Couple of glaring mistakes, like dell laptops catching fire and then apple releases an update??

It is being made into a movie as well!!

economictimes.indiatimes.com/magazines/panache/this-is-for-real-a-thriller-flick-based-on-bitcoins/articleshow/42988058.cms

And something more interesting
Tumkur, Karnataka-based Bitcoin company Unicoin, which offers Bitcoin wallets and a mechanism for people to transact in Bitcoin currency, has offered to give out Rs 200 worth of Bitcoin vouchers to anyone buying Subramanian's book.

My guess will be that bitcoin will just be incidental to the movie and not the focus...
But I shouldn't be commenting until I read the book.

Seems to be an interesting read.

Some real life incidents seem to have been made part of the story - Nigerians protesting in Goa after one of their countrymen is killed....

Silk Road seems to have been changed to "Cotton Trail". Too much.  ;D

Indeed he has done a lot of research.

How long have you been researching Bitcoins?

Two years. Bitcoins first grabbed worldwide attention when Snowden announced he would take donations in Bitcoins, after the US had imposed a financial blockade on Wikileaks. The Bitcoin protocol was started by a mysterious person who goes by the name of Satoshi Nakamoto. It's believed to be a pseudonym, with the first name derived from brands Samsung and Toshiba. The Bitcoin algorithm produces 12 Bitcoins every few hours and it is designed so that the total number of Bitcoins will never exceed 21 million, which it should reach by 2020. People used to mine Bitcoins, now it's easier to steal them.

Yeah, this had me as well until I read the book. Might have been a bad interview is all I could derive.
Take the book when you come over. Its a decent read.

I have finished reading the book.
Overall, I would say that it is a good book.
The last 20% of the story disappointed me with too many sub-plots and unnecessary twists.  :)

Is it related to the movie "The rise and rise of bitcoins"? Have you seen that? I want to see it...

Not related to the movie. Its a nice watch for a lot of early BItcoiners.

The movie based on God is a Gamer? The rights have just been sold.. I don't think you can expect to see the movie any time soon.

I guess a book where bitcoin is the superhero won't sell as well as a book where it is the villain.  :P

Another interview, in which he seems to be getting it right.

"Today, we cannot imagine life without WiFi even for five minutes. Where was the internet 10-15 years back? Similarly, I feel Bitcoins shall be the ruling currency five to ten years from now," asserted the author, whose latest book is about how the lives of gamers, politicians and bankers are determined by the virtual currency.
