Your just sitting there and you get a notification that you have received 20 bitcoins out of nowhere. What would you do?

Invest it in a Bitcoin related business or start my own Bitcoin business with the money.

Someone may send to the wrong address and could be sad to lose 20 BTC. Absolutely return back to the sending address. Same as pick up a wallet containing cash, card, ID etc, what will you do?

id look at where the funds came from and google search the address to see if i can find the sender. then if lucky to find him(yes ud be surprised how many people publicly publish their addresses), see if it was sent by mistake and return it.*

if i couldnt find him id leave it aside for a month to see if anyone shouts on reddit or here about accidentally sending funds elsewhere and if the addresses match. send it back*

*asking the person to sign a message using the send address to prove original ownership.

if both of those fail and its been over a month. then id use the funds to invest in businesses that have legitimate business plans and a feasible idea that shows some actual benefit to the community.

I made a lot of bad loans in 2012. I'd assume some borrower was repaying me. Starfish BCB maybe?

Since I usually give out unique addresses to different people, I'd probably have a good idea who paid me. If the person who was given that address wasn't the person who paid me, then I'd probably keep the coins. Nobody else has any business messing with that address and if they accidentally sent BTC there it would be their loss.

I would send the coins back if I found out someone sent them there per accident.

If they were meant for me I'd buy undervalued altcoins. Some have become way too cheap and it's value is not being recognized.

This is a difficult one because so many people can accidentally send coins to others which were not meant for them in which case you using them could cause a problem. If I was not sure they were meant for me I would hold them safely until I could either trace the person that sent them or someone came to me saying they had accidentally sent them. If I knew they were for me I would more than likely invest in some kind of bitcoin business.

If it will not be a mistake i will keep it for my self and promote BTC with half of it :)

I would send it back to the sending address, simple as that, no holding onto it to "find" the guy who owns them. If I don't own them then I cannot keep them.

What a honest man would do: Send it back to the address even if you can't contact the person who sent it and get confirmation it was a mistake.

I would sell half for AUD.. put the remaining 80% in cold storage and other 20% in my every day wallet in case I wanted to buy myself a little present with BTC.

I guess I'd be really really happy and put them in a safe paper wallet first. Getting hold of so much money makes you kind of prone to do stupid decisions like gamble them away, buy stuff you really don't need or be careless. I think I'd sleep it over a couple of days first, at least!!!

In fact this did happen to me once. An upstart business called BitSpend (remember them?) erroneously refunded me twice to the sum of 12 BTC. I sent it back to them, but in retrospect maybe I should have just kept it because they were out of business no more than a few weeks later.

Hindsight is a bitch, but good for you for sending it back. Most people are very scruple when it comes to money.

If I received 20 bitcoins I would try to find who made the error, if I can find him then I'll send back all the coins to the original owner.
If not I would add them to my cold storage and thank the unknown donator.

This is the correct answer. It is not right to take something that does not belong to you. If you are unable to get in contact with the person who sent the coins you should post here and wait for proof from someone that they sent you the coins in error. If after a certain amount of time (maybe a few months) and am unable to get in contact with the sender then I would pick a charity with a noble cause to donate the coins to.

No, I stayed far away from that. That was a train wreck that anyone that spent time at Just Dice could see coming. It was entertaining to watch for sure.

Wow, so did he really went homeless after this? The last thing I know was that he indeed tried to pay back investors (which is futile) but still hangs around in his favourite bar, where he tried to get the waitress to strip for his company. Did he really lose his apartment?

He was homeless before all this happend. He begged for days on just-dice so that he can get food and shelter. Then he somehow got a job but still gambled away his loans.

It is a very tragic story, but I have no feelings for the investors, because it was a disaster in the making.

I would buy some sha256 or scrypt equipment. Or buy different cryptos at low price. Donate some to different developers. So many ways to spend them.

If I find a wallet with no ID in the street loaded with money I'd like to believe I'd make an effort to return the money but apart of me is really going to want to keep it I have no doubt.  Even then it is not the same situation I guess because with Bitcoin I could always just send the coins back where they came from.

It concerns me that there are thee posts advocating returning the funds to the "sending address," no questions asked.

Bitcoin has no such concept. When you spend Bitcoin, you spend coin outputs. Often, but not always, you must sign the transaction with a specific "address" to spend those outputs. If any type of coin mixing is involved, it may not be clear who the "sender" is. Which of the (for example) 5 "senders" would you return the coins to?

If it was clear who the sender was I'd absolutely return it. Otherwise, I'd make an effort to contact the sender. The reality is that sending it back is probably better than keeping it unless the transaction is so complicated that it could be from anyone. How would you feel if you mistakenly sent 20BTC (don't ask me how).

I would not advocate blindly sending the coins back to the address that the coins came from, but rather try to find someone who clearly controls the address that the coins came from to see where the coins were intended to go. You are correct that you would never be able to contact the sender if a mixer (or shared send) was used, but other then that you could probably figure out who had sent the coins as they would likely attempt to locate the person they sent the coins to.  

In that case, I'd probably blow a few, donate a few, and sock away or invest the rest.

I agree with this. If I am able to somehow figure out who the sender was then I would return the coins to them, otherwise the coins would be mine for the keeping.

I would wait some days to see if the sender tries to contact me. Since everything is registered on blockchain, he would know how to contact me, unlike someone that lost his wallet. Otherwise I risk send back to an exchange/mixer/betting site/wharever, or refusing a legitimate donation

Activate a "google alert" for TX details, just in case some poor SOB was desperately trying to get it back, then I would get alert in my email that somebody somewhere was chattering about the TX and investigate the matter.

If by chance an address mistype were a valid address then the sender loses the coins. The coins are sent to that address.

If that mistyped valid address is already in use then the user will receive the coin, but that again is a very small chance. Most addresses are not in use.

If it is not in use then the coins will still go to it.

I am not sure about the mechanism from here though? Say an unused address has coins deposited to it what happens to them, will some future user get lucky and generate a new wallet with that address only to find it with coin already in? I suspect wallet clients will check any newly minted addresses for transactions, if any found then forget it and generate a new one. In which case the coin is gone "forever".

I would wait for people to send some message via the blockchain or post something that they just send BTC to my address. I'll then go and contact them. If they do want the BTC back, I'd ask them to confirm their legitimacy (sign from the sending address) and return the BTC. If I may keep the BTC, I'd thank them a lot!

For now when bitcoin price is so low I do not think so. Maybe you can buy something and what next? I would use my bitcoin to exchange it for food... I am little hungry and I have not much cash to spend  on basic needs unfortunately.

Yes, I was exaggerating. As the user above said, then you have renovation costs, which are in the tens of thousands of euros, plus legal fees. It's probably cheaper than buying a new house somewhere else, but you'd certainly need more than 20 bitcoins.

i would trade until made over 100%. then i would cut half to buy the gpus. and with the 50% i would use 25% to trade more and withdraw the 25%.

I would invest 5 BTC in mining. Buy a hero account here for  4 BTC. Id loan 6 BTC to a highly trusted use and remaining 5 BTC, I would just trade some altcoins which I've found highly profitable in the recent days

10 BTC > BitShares, Notes, and PLAY tokens.

2 BTC > Other alts (Peercoin, NXT etc)

5 BTC > Cold Storage with the rest of my savings

3 BTC > Give to other people/convert to fiat and pay bills

I would search the forum to see who has sent it mistakenly to me (because there is no other reason why someone would send me 20 bitcoins  :D). I will ask them to sign a message with the sending address to confirm that it was theirs. And I would send them back their bitcoins.
