Title: George's Famous Baklava
Post by: lolwut on April 22, 2012, 03:02:42 AM
http://mandrik.com/ (http://mandrik.com/)

This guy accepts bitcoins and this is THE BEST baklava I have ever tasted. Embarrassingly enough, i killed a 3lb order in 2 days.

I sent him an email in hopes he can start posting here, but this stuff is damn good. His shipping and packaging were professional as well.

Sweet! I'd heard his product being raved about on Free Talk Live; knowing he accepts bitcoins means I may actually try it.

Yeah, the chocolate baklava is damn good. But you should come to PorcFest and try the deep fried baklava he makes.

Thanks for the kind words! I've been selling baklava online for 2.5 years. I had a lot of people asking if I'd accept BTCs, and I finally got that all setup early this year. I'm glad I did!

Yes, I invented deep fried baklava after my friend & business partner suggested it. It's some pretty crazy stuff to eat, lol, so come to PorcFest and try some! We make a ton of other foods, like the trainwreck. That's a gyro where you get rid of the pita bread and replace it with a 10-piece bacon weave. We went through over 200 bacon weaves last year and ran out by Thursday! We'll need to do more prep work this year to handle the load. :P

Holy crap. Gyros are my favorite food, followed by bacon. This must taste like heaven!

Wow, you need to put more of your products online!

Also, I couldn't find shipping costs on your website, or where you ship from. If I wanted some baklava (say 3lbs) shipped to MA, how much would that be and how long would it take?

Edit: nevermind, I see there's shipping info on the eBay page. It looks like it's $8.95 for 1.5lbs, so does that scale linearly for 3 lbs?
Edit 2: I'm dumb. There's full information on the checkout page :)

Glad i made this post. Mandrik is about to have tons of new business. Baklava for bitcoin, nom nom.

Edit: I think I'm going to order an original and a dark chocolate. Mandrik, please let me know if you need more time to cook before I order, I don't want you to get flooded with orders all at once. I'm pretty sure this stuff is going to be a hit and this will be a great source of business :)

I can handle it, haha! ;)

There is a problem with ordering one of each & using BTCs. I just noticed this and need to figure out a solution. I use BitPay for my shopping cart buttons and if you add one of each the shipping is too much.

In the meantime you can use this Bitmit auction:

I haven't killed anyone yet from my cooking and I'm pretty sure I haven't made anyone sick, either. ;)

PF will be a blast this year! We'll be in the main pavilion and we've upgraded our cooking equipment. The menu will also be expanded including paleo/low carb friendly foods! It should be a great time, as always. :D Oh, and thanks for the tip, Jeremy! I took your advice and posted there.

I do personal chef work & housecleaning for a living and I always take the proper measures to make sure my cooking area is as sanitary as possible. I also make sure to keep my hands clean. I've established a solid reputation for my work and I think that's because I'm very serious about what I do. I want people to love what I cook. I don't get repeat business if my customers are getting sick or think my food is awful. To me any time I'm cooking it's "serious business," but I still have a lot of fun. ;)

Nyaaan, I agree that one should be cautious when buying food online or offline. While I certainly don't want to get sick from eating food that contains e. coli or some other bacteria/virus, I also don't want to eat foods that contain harmful ingredients. I rarely go out to restaurants because I want to make sure the ingredients are fresh and of the highest quality. My diet is extremely important to me (I actually eat a paleo diet) as is my physical & mental health. I encourage anyone thinking about buying my baklava to do some research. Check out my eBay feedback, ask questions here, or talk to me directly. I would say the same about any restaurant or online food vendor. Know what you are putting in your body before you consume it. :)

I also value authenticity and I felt very confused when I read your post. If what you said was true I'd want to do everything I possibly could to make sure that never happened again. I've sold hundreds of pans of baklava over the past three years and I never once had someone say it made them sick or they had it tested and it came back with e. coli. Because I'm an agorist my business is built on my reputation. Would you be willing to clarify your original statement to clear up any confusion?

Finally, after just hearing everyone else rave about it, I just placed an order. With bitcoin it was a cakewalk.

Hopefully this thread resulted in a surge of orders, although I am wondering how much bitcoin business the site was doing up to this point. (Enough to bring the owner here, I suppose.)

One day I had an epiphany. I was like....I bet this guy could make a killing here. I knew the baklava was very good and his process looked perfect.

So I emailed him and told him he should join the forum. And now here we are :)

Just have to throw in my review: I recently had some of George's baklava, and it was absolutely delicious. I shared with friends, and everyone who tried it loved it (well, a couple of folks only admitted to merely liking it, but funny enough they've been asking when I'm ordering more. ;D)

I can't resist, I'm going to have to place another order....

Also: I tried it warm, and I tried it chilled. I should have trusted the baker on this, warm is good, but chilled is so much better.

I've never shipped internationally and I'm concerned that the baklava wouldn't arrive in the best condition. I imagine it would be quite expensive, too. This is why I've avoided shipping internationally all together, sadly. :(

Maybe when bitcoins are $1000 per btc I can lol

You should film a libertarian/bitcoin cooking show called "Food Talk Live" and invite some guests around to chat while you cook different things then upload it to https://www.coindl.com/ (https://www.coindl.com/) and include the recipe so we can follow along at home. I would definitely support that  :D

Maybe Dave Ridley can film it  :)

There anyway to fix the shipping costs?

2 dozen cookies and 1.5lbs of chocolate is $16.90 via bitcoin for shipping ($56.35) and $10.95 ($50.40 total) via Paypal. If anything you should give a discount for paying via Bitcoin since Paypal sucks (http://www.paypalsucks.com).

Yeah this is an ongoing issue with BitPay. I've done this for a few others and I'll be happy to send you the right cost for this order. It should be $50.40 + you'll get 6 extra cookies for paying with Bitcoin (that's your "Paypal sucks" bonus! :) ). I'll PM you the info!

George, If I was to vac seal a tray and freeze it, would it be edible after I thawed it out? how long does it last in the fridge if i vac seal it?

Since it has a low moisture content, it freezes very well. I would say it even gets more tender and delicious after it's been frozen. It's very edible. If you vac seal it, it would probably last 5 years in the freezer. In the fridge and vac sealed, probably something like two months before I would start to suspect that it's going bad.

Though I don't know how it's gonna last that long in your household. I once ate a whole pan by myself in about a week. It's addicting.

Absolutely. I'm actually heading out of town tomorrow and won't be home until next Thursday. Would you be ok with waiting until the 13th for your order to ship? I'll throw in a few free cookies. :)

Thanks!

Payment sent today. I can't wait for my 2 full pans of baklava!

how much is that gonna weigh? seems like one of those pans is pretty large.

Great customer service and shipped out very quickly with tracking.

Yummy chocolate baklava!

Still trying to figure out whether I love the cookies or not. A little dry with something just a little bit off with the taste but I cannot put my tongue on it. But they do seem to grow on you. Might be the low carb/gluten free thing. Perhaps I want some chocolate on them. A big fan of the coconut flour.

Overall, definitely high quality products and worth a try.

The cookies do have erythritol in them, and that has a "cooling" taste to it. There isn't a lot, but it does add to the cookie. I think they taste best frozen. Give that a try. :)

Oh and the dough is basically low carb marzipan. Seriously. A friend & I used it to make little characters on a low carb cake and it worked well! Very tasty, too. I should sell that. :P

lolwut - your order went out today. Hope you're hungry! :D

I've been baking like a mad man lately and I was curious if anyone would be interested in different products. I'm open to making new things to sell. Just let me know here or in a PM!

If I ever get a nice Hobart slicer I think jerky would be a great thing to make. ;)

Huh, I saw one at our state auction a few months ago, but it didn't look particularly sanitary. Whack it up with a heavy cleaver, and you should be able to chop lots of slices in an hour.

That would get tiring after a while. I guess I was spoiled by growing up with restaurant equipment (my dad owned a diner). I have a Moffat convection oven in the home right now and I could bake 8 dozen cookies in under 15 minutes with it.

But yes, I've seen equipment go at restaurant auctions. Maybe I'll eventually find a decent one at a fair price.

If you've been waiting to try the almond cookies, I'd order some now because the latest batch turned out absolutely amazing. They're almost perfectly like the texture of a real buttery, chewy (but crispy on the outside at the same time) cookie.

Thanks for the compliment! I really appreciate that. Yeah, I'm very happy with the recipe I use for the cookies. I spent a lot of time experimenting with the recipe until it was just right. A lot of my friends & family who don't eat low carb really enjoy them! I recommend eating them straight from the freezer. Or crumble some up in a bowl with heavy cream. :)

I would actually be interested in a smorgasbord of products.

Want to give me a quote for a smorgasbord of stuff, like a sampler, along with 4 dozen cookies (the special of 3 extra still going on?) for a total around 10 BTC shipping included? Then I know what to order next time!

Thanks.

I PM'ed you guys. :) I'm working on some new low carb, gluten free cookie ideas. One is a spiced cookie (pumpkin pie-type spices), and I'd like to make a lemony/limey cookie, too. I'd also like to make a chocolate cookie. If any of this sounds good to anyone just let me know. :)

This guy accepts bitcoins and this is THE BEST baklava I have ever tasted. Embarrassingly enough, i killed a 3lb order in 2 days.

I sent him an email in hopes he can start posting here, but this stuff is damn good. His shipping and packaging were professional as well.

Sweet zombie Jesus! Houston, we have a severe drool problem up here...

Interesting.

I'm accessing George's site from a U.S. govt computer, and the paypal button displays normally, but the Bitpay button shows the little 'X' like the image failed to load.

If you are ever planning on selling baklava again I would happily be a regular customer. Any particular reason you bumped a 5-year old thread though? Other than nostalgia and late-night munchies, of course. It got my hopes it and killed them all within an instant. I thought I was missing out on something that had been going on for years, turns out I just missed out entirely. Not a single complaint, what made you close down shop?

A few weeks ago I combed the for sale thread for foods for sale and bumped all the threads I found...I think George stopped selling before I could get a chance to pickup some so I'm also in your same boat (and LOVE BAKLAVA!!!!!)

I too will pledge some btc if he brings it back... how much of a pool would need to be built for him to be pursuaded?  (400?  600?  1000?)

Everywhere I read around here claims it is the best baklava they've ever had. If George was really smart, they would've scaled that business up, increasing profit and could've still kept it going without needing to "work". All things considered, George is smarter than I am if they held onto those coins. Either way, you can't let a nest-egg stop you from chasing your next dollar!

I appreciate the praise! I stopped baking in late 2013 when I took over User Ops for Blockchain.info. That job took over my life and I no longer had time to bake. I sold baklava out of my kitchen for over four years and decided to close up shop.

Earlier this year I left Blockchain.info. I have more free time now and have thought about bringing the baklava business back. I don't want to make any promises, but it's not off the table. If I start up again it would be a bitcoin-only thing, and I'd likely do something where I only ship specific days of the month so I don't have to work at it all the time.

Again, no promises, but I'll let you guys know if I get bored and decide to bake again. I do miss the smell in my house!

I made this account just to come and tell you I ordered from you before the mtgox crash but I fucked up and had it mailed to the wrong address LOL. Never had a chance to try it. I know I'd definately be a buyer if you ever came back into business just out of the raging curiousity I have for how good that baklava that evaded me was.
