I'd probably sell half of whatever I have by then for USD, and invest that somewhere (stocks? bonds? land?) The rest I'd keep, just in case the value goes up any more, and to spend in what I hope will be a vast Bitcoin economy :)

I don't have enough coins yet to become a millionaire, but I'd do the same as dlingus, I'd quit working and live my dream of drawing a webcomic full time and also make a video game at some point.

If you loans are at a fixed interest rate, pay them off as slow as possible. Inflation will eat it up and, assuming you're in the USA, you're gonna get some serious inflation!

I can't think of many luxury things I want, though I have always wanted an ISP-level Internet connection with a large block of IP addresses. Once I become even more rich, I might buy an island.

Yeah, I think a lot of us will be 'manipulating prices' in the island market in a few years.

1) Build up a private lab for developing interplanetary spacecraft propulsion, compact energy sources and esoteric aerospace technologies.

2) Build up a stable of racehorses and an associated breeding stud.

3) Dabble in yacht racing.

4) Corner what's left of the gold market.

5) Hookers and blow ... on the weekends only (or on trips to Langley).

One problem with even the most wonderful islands is that they can be lonely places to live, and they usually have no internet connectivity except slow and expensive satellite.

It Bitcoin hits $1000, I will try to attract a small group of freedom-loving Bitcoiners to buy an island that's big enough for us all, and on which we can install high-speed internet.

 ... like the Free State project. I've wondered about the feasability of doing this ... Some of these smaller Islands only have a few thousand residents, the outer ones sometimes less. If a group of "free staters" showed up in numbers they could just make the the place its own nation, zero taxes, gold/bitcoin, internet private banking, poker servers, etc .... then what they get blacklisted as a 'non-compliant country' ... so what?

Pick one that is a relay station for some fiber cable for good internet ... close to flight/shipping routes may make it more desirable also.

Cool, I'd join. :) The problem is that existent islands are all controlled by governments. I think it's easier to create a seastead, if you want freedom. Technology for that already exists, the only thing missing is either rich people wanting to "retire" like that, or a business model good enough to maintain such seastead - and brave entrepreneurs wanting to take the risks.

There are fully inhabited islands around the world, if you want. But all controlled by governments.

I'm a bit skeptical about this idea of "taking over" a country with immigration. I think people would react badly to that. Nationals may easily turn against you. They'd see this as a foreign invasion.

For people really interested in not dealing with existing governaments at all, if you get like the-IMF-borrows-money-from-you rich or somthing, perhaps you could invest in research for developing means to guide underground magma flows so you can grow your own island (after Sealand they changed the rules so you can just build soil for your new country, but i guess if you had your own volcano lair in the middle of the ocean that was created the same way many accepted sovereign lands have, they might have a hard time coming up with an argument against your own sovereingnity(sp?), and if all else fails, you can hold the world hostage anyway since you now can make volcanos grow into their comercial centers and shit *raises one eyebrow and sticks a pinky in the corner of his smirk*

Easy, people who want to get some coin while it's still cheap.

First I'd slap myself for the hundreds (nearly thousands) of coins I sold for less than $5.  Then I'd shrug it off and hope my mining pool can generate $1000/day in donations, transaction fees, and rounding ;).

Anybody in their right mind would buy at that price as bitcoins are actually worth infinity dollars. You can thank me later for saving you a fortune.

I have a background in trading speculative stocks, and I can tell you that this kind of speculative price explosion usually collapses back to nearly nothing eventually (thanks Timothy Sykes).

However, I have my own reasons for believing that bitcoins won't collapse, and may in fact reach the astronomical values people are dreaming about. I'm keeping those reasons to myself for now until I get a chance to gather more bitcoins.

$1000/bitcoin won't make me filthy rich, but I might be rich enough to quit my day job and devote the rest of my life to ministry, raising my kids (and maybe foster kids?), and developing bitcoin-powered websites.

I'm going to step out on a limb and make some predictions about bitcoin price increases:

1) A lot of kids with graphics cards are going to get a LOT of spending money just because they saved the few bitcoins they mined after reading about it in a forum somewhere
2) The term "bitcoin billionaire" is going to become somewhat commonplace, and will refer to someone who became a billionaire through bitcoin investment.
3) The world's first trillionaire (by USD valuation) will be one of the first big investors in bitcoins.
4) This will all happen WITHOUT the collapse of the US dollar, and without bitcoins becoming a commonplace way to pay at the grocery store.

I guess we'll see if I'm right.

Note for posterity: current bitcoin price is in the $5-$6 range after a big run-up.

I'm guessing you think that Bitcoins could become the next defacto international reserve or common trade currency.  I think that the quantum leap in transaction costs versus current systems is so dramatic that most fiat currencies might not even have a reason to exist. In which case, the US FRN, the Euro, the Pound, etc don't collapse so much as fade away.

How many bitcoins would a single person want/would be able to obtain?

After few simply calculations, you'll figure out the value

I did nothing when bitcoin hit $1000 (well, I bought more). I'm not really planning to "cash out" as I think more and more merchants will just start accepting bitcoin over time as the price continues to rise anyway.

I would probably sell a few if it hit $10,000 just to have some USD as a safety net.
