Title: BTC Chess Tournament $100 Prize in Bitcoin!
Post by: ericpfdz on February 06, 2015, 11:25:06 PM
Hi. My name is Eric.

I have been interested in Bitcoin for about a year now, and still I'm fascinated.

I am starting a chess tournament with a Bitcoin prize! The prize is $100 in Bitcoin. There are only 8 spots available in this tournament. I will not be participating in the tournament, but will be organizing it.

IF YOU ARE WORRIED ABOUT CHEATERS... Let me just say that we are playing a variant of chess that is near impossible to cheat on. This variant is called chess960. See for your self. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess960

Spots are still open!

The next tournament will have twice as many people and a $200 dollar prize in Bitcoin!

I am not going to give much info here. You will have to e-mail me to get the smaller details and reserve a spot.

There is a .07 Bitcoin fee in order to participate in the tournament in order to help fund the prize. Just think... you could turn .07 Bitcoin into $100 worth of Bitcoin!! e-mail me to check for availability, and to get more information. My e-mail is ...

Yes, it will be online multiplayer. It will all be done on a website. Reddit wasn't as enthusiastic about my idea. Glad to know that this forum is accepting of new ideas! If you would like to participate, e-mail me. Having you on-board would be a pleasure :).

I am able to watch all games that took place. If moves were put in impeccably, and without a delay, I could possibly disqualify for cheating.

lichess.org
The site allows users to send requests to other users, and keeps a database of all games played. I am going to tell people which requests to send and to who. I will let everyone play their games then I will go to the database and find the games. The database shows the result of the games, the time in each move, what each move was, and the players in the game. I will tally the results. Know the disqualified losers, and organize the next games. It's all a rather tedious procedure.

I watched that video on Derren's trick. It was extremely interesting. Thank you for that!

and... Yes the host gives out 100 keeps 24. You catch on quick don't you!

it's quite easy to cheat on a multiplayer game. Just find a good AI program and make the opponent play with the AI.

there might be a solution to this: "lightning chess" but it's not a good way to decide who's better player...
some people needs long time to think...

I wont be participating. The site is lichess.org . I organize the whole thing, and make sure the funds safely get to the winner.

Yes I totally agree. Lightning chess is a possibility. But before we change the nature of the tournament... let me just say that I can review every game, and if I see something fishy, I will disqualify the cheater.

Good point! Anything is possible. Besides an inside cheater would easily be noticed by opposition due to fast, and perfect moves. Then my reputation on the forums would be ruined. I don't have an inside person. That I can assure you of.

Until then, if you are interested in taking part in the tournament. E-mail me. I should be able to reply when I get back home. So far no one has e-mailed me so all 8 slots are open! I am willing to offer escrow for this tournament in order to increase the odds of this happening. I am a chess fan myself, and this seems like fun, but seeing that you are of the "newbie" status, people will most likely not trust you. I am offering to hold the funds of this tournament, without releasing any payments until it is publicity determined who is the winner. I would then send the prize money, and then the 24$ to you (minus $1 escrow fee).

To discuss, please reply to this post directly (to remain public)

Can't bots be programmed to put in a random time delay in there ?

Only way I can see you avoiding chess computer cheating is by playing a chess variant. Such as swapping the knight and bishop around at the start of the game.
Though I expect people would still be able to adjust the chess engine to do these changes.

I am preventing chess computer cheating by observing behaviors during the game. It is harder than you think to cheat. En.lichess.org also does a lot to prevent cheating. This is where the games will be played. It is against website rules to cheat, and if you are caught, your account will be banned.

Seems like fun, but there are a lot of chess bots out there right now. If there were truly preventive measures to prevent a 'flawless strategy', what would be the response by OP if the 'cheater' is actually a chess prodigy? Sure, the human mind can only fathom so many combinations... Let's take my question as a 'what if'.  :)

Ok, So I join up... use one of these handheld chess games, and simulate the game being played against AI and duplicate the moves?

You will have to stream these games via video, to filter out the cheaters. People tend to up their cheat game, when money is involved.  ;)

we'll thing is you don't actually need a bot, just a 3rd party help program. whenever you're stuck o na move just type in the board layout and you'll get the best move handed to you.

Derren is also an amazing pickpocket so could have swapped the envelopes with one an assistant wrote down after the game. The footage of him manhandling the chessmaster was likely edited out.

Escrow address: 1PL328CQNaY2J1SpUZgeyVwwdQr2Cspuqy

Escrow Terms: Funds will be held in escrow for 10 days. If all slots are not filled within 10 days,
The funds will be sent back to the sending address. In other words, if
One person signs up, then everyone else must sign up within 10
Days or we will have to restart. Do not send funds to the stated address if you do not agree to the above terms.

We will follow the OPs suggestions, but the USD value will be adjusted based on the avg market price of BTC. Once a winner is chosen, he will be sent $100 (can vary depending on market), the OP will receive $20 (also varies) and I will keep $4 (variable).  If there is any suspicion of cheating or OP not following through, all funds will be sent back to original users and I will forfeit my escrow fee. (This must be publicly agreed upon by the majority).

If none of that makes sense, let me know and I will revise.

There are many chess engines that will work for Chess960. Those that don't work (because the starting position is illegal for a regular chess game) will begin to work as soon as a position that could be legally reached in a regular chess game is reached

Chess should be played for fun, not against strangers online for money. Cheating is an issue in chess even at high level tournaments. It is absolutely a serious issue online.

It could be nice if someone could setup a method where you have a web cam looking over the shoulder of every player, to prevent them from using chess devices or online guides.

You have 1 cam positioned on the player and one on his computer screen... That would make cheating very difficult. Audio must be enabled to eliminate verbal couching.

The player must also be willing to move the cam around at the request of the other player, to eliminate other angles of cheating.

This is a very difficult game to "Police" .... If there is money on the line, people will cheat... but it's still a good idea.  ;D

I admire op patience with all the cheater stories.

I agree that it may be a huge problem, especially if there are programs that let you replicate the random start order.

How would you detect a cheater playing opponents moves against a computer and then simulating this computers moves?

If it is for cheating or using aids to compete, all will be in similar conditions. Also, some might call their expert chess friend to aid them.

Just a question to whoever replied on this thread earlier than February, has this online chess tournament really took place? If so, who was the winner? I find it difficult to not have any cheaters on such a game knowing that no one could actually see what the players are doing on both sides. Also, money is on the line here, so it must be safe to say that cheaters will be present. :D

Perhaps, dedicated accredited chess rooms playing speed chess may work. The envisioned business model would work if incorporated within public gaming venues where diehard gamers go to play the more advanced online games not suited for home perhaps due to cost of owning the hardware, not to mention space requirements. Just a thought.

My e-mail is ...

ericpfdz@gmail.com

You are making $60 for a $100 prize and people are saying the tournament isn't even trustworthy?  Couldn't I just use a program to have a computer tell me what move to make and basically demolish the human players?  Why such a high profit margin?  Even a chess tournament like that is still considered gambling, I think, so you better check the laws where you are operating.
